Rothschild: I'm a middle-class girl from Jersey

Rothschild said she hasn't spoken to Hillary Clinton about her endorsement of John McCain.

Rothschild said she hasn't spoken to Hillary Clinton about her endorsement of John McCain.

(CNN) – Lynn Forester de Rothschild, once a prominent supporter of Sen. Hillary Clinton’s bid for president who has switched her allegiance to Sen. John McCain, is pushing back on attempts by some Democrats to “play the class card” against her.

Watch: Rothschild makes McCain's case

De Rothschild, the wife of a scion of the British Rothschild family that made its fortune in private banking, is standing by her charge that it is Sen. Barack Obama who is the elitist. “An elitist is someone whose state of mind is that they’re better than the rest of us,” Rothschild told CNN’s John Roberts on American Morning Thursday. “As president, he will be very full of himself. That is elitist, ok. To be privileged is not elitist.”

Rothschild pointed to her middle-class origins in response to Democratic charges that she is an elitist. “I am a girl from New Jersey. A middle-class family. My father worked two jobs. Four kids went to college, law school. I earned a good part of the fortune that we have,” she said.

De Rothschild, a lawyer and entrepreneur who made a reported $100 million in telecommunications before she met Sir Evelyn Rothschild, was a prolific fundraiser for Sen. Clinton. On American Morning, she defended McCain’s record on equal pay for women, an issue the Obama campaign highlighted on the same day de Rothschild announced her endorsement of McCain.

“Trying to tag John McCain as ‘not good for women’ is just insane,” de Rothschild said Wednesday. She also told Roberts that McCain has “a record” of taking on special interests, bipartisanship, leadership, and making tough decisions while Obama only has “rhetoric” on all of those points.

    Whatever cow!
Obama could be the most self-centered arogant bastard in the history of the world, for all I care. As long as he can stop this country's downward spiral then he can have my vote and you can shut the hell up

  4. No Hillary = No Obama

Obama is an elitist – he went to private schools – he didn't have the street experience, the waiting on food line experiences, the factory experience, the foreclosure experience, the standing on the unemployment line experience, the military experience – really what did he have but a smooth sail because of his yapping ability.

Why doesn't CNN, or any other major news network, talk about Obama's meddling in American and Iraqi military and foreign affairs? Oh that's right, it isn't okay to "blasphemy" the messiah.

You can put lipstick on a "privileged elitist," but it's still an elitist.

Why do we care so much about what millionaires think? Why do we hear about her thoughts, why does she hold press conferences? Most people in the U.S. have thoughts and opinions, but I guess those opinions don't matter cause we don't make enough money to hold a press conference. Just sounds like rich people supporting other rich people - COUNTRY FIRST.

She doesn't vote for the issues, just out of spite, all she is doing is strengthening the democratic party by making us more motivated than ever to come out November.

I am from a blue state but I will still come out in support of Obama, even though I am positive he will win anyway, I want the popular vote to blow the doors off the republicans!

Even if you are in a solidly red or blue state, come out and vote november, lets get the popularity vote to really send a message loud and clear!!

I saw her interview on CNN last night and couldn't stop laughing! I could just imagine the McCain campaign on the edge of their seats wanting the show to cut to commercial! LOL!

Hmmm... De Rothschild points out her roots and her upbringing as defense of her not being "elitist" and she completely ignores Obama's roots and upbringing when charging he is an elitist...

And I seriously don't understand the line about, "An elitist is someone whose state of mind is that they’re better than the rest of us" comes from... guess she must be a mind-reader in addition to being the wife of "Sir" Evelyn Rothschild. I'm sure De Rothschild and her $100+ million fortune she made doesn't go around thinking she's better than the rest of us... right...

It surprises me to read that these comments are "moderated." One wonders if individual commentators could exercise a bit of self-moderation and try contributing something intelligent and relevant.

She is a racist, that is the only one way to explain her more, because there is no real difference between Obama and Hillary's plans for America. She may also be running from paying her taxes like Trump who is supporting McWBush because he wants to gain more from these tax cuts which were immoral in 2007 for McSame but became very moral in 2008.

Does anyone care what this woman has to say? We get it, richers love McCain. The rest of us everyday people will be casting our votes for Obama in November, and there are a lot more of us then there are of them.

So what she is saying is not that Obama is elitist, but that she thinks he is "uppity" – she's just afraid to speak her mind...

Why does CNN keep highlighting her endorsement of McCain. She should be ignored. Frankly, endorsements don't mean much and no one cares. No one is buying the argument that Obama is an elitist, so Lynn please give it up
