Sen. Chuch Hagel said Palin 'doesnt have any foreign policy credentials.'.'

(CNN) – Sen. Chuck Hagel has become one of the most prominent Republicans to openly question VP nominee Sarah Palin’s qualifications on Thursday.

"She doesn't have any foreign policy credentials," Hagel said in an interview with the Omaha World Herald. "You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don't know what you can say. You can't say anything."

On her first overseas trip last year, Palin traveled to Kuwait and Germany to visit Alaskan National Guard troops.

In defending her own foreign policy experience, Palin has said that Alaska’s proximity to Russia gives her international expertise. Hagel, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called that notion “insulting to the American people.”

"I do think in a world that is so complicated, so interconnected and so combustible, you really got to have some people in charge that have some sense of the bigger scope of the world," he added. "I think that's just a requirement."

Hagel, who broke with fellow Republicans over the Iraq war, has said he will not endorse either major party candidate. The Nebraska senator has said he would have considered being Obama’s running mate and was rumored to be on his VP short list.

Although Hagel is a longtime friend of GOP presidential nominee John McCain, he traveled to the Middle East with Obama in July. Hagel also came to Obama’s defense in May after the Democratic nominee and McCain had a dispute over the best way to deal with Iran.

Hagel, whose Senate term is drawing to a close, is not running for re-election to the Senate.

Finally, a Republican with enough sense to stand up and try and take make his party for the religious fascists.

I am for Obama, but I do believe in a two party system. I find it sad that the Republican party has literally been reduced to the current traveling circus. If more of The Hagel's do not step up, the party will have lost all crediblity completely.

For example, do ALL Republicans believe that the fact that Alaska is close to Russia gives her foreign experience??

Say it to yourself slowly, do you not see how at least half of America finds that comment not just stupid but absurd!

Of couse, do not take my advice just keep on keeping on!

USA '08   September 18th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

But she built a hockey rink on land she didn't have rights to and people play hockey in Russia.

McCain's judgement has clearly left him. Does he really think she could function as the president if he couldn't? She scares me. A lot.

Patrick, Fairfield, CA   September 18th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Coming from within the Republican Party, Hagel speaks with great experience and is telling the truth about the one-hit wonder, Sarah Palin. Hagel's pictures of her credentials are factual and enlightening. I am glad he has decided to stand up and point this out to the American people.

Chipster   September 18th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

How much does Palin know about the Constitution. Sen. Obama taught constitutional law for 12 years. Palin is a religious wacko with a record of abusing the little power she actually had. What will she do with more power? Let's not find out.

Sen.Hagel, thank you Sir! Now you are putting your country ahead of your party. I am a retired first sergeant of the U.S. Army. It makes me proud when anyone can stand up and tell the truth. Mc Cain you were wrong to chose Palin for VP. There are too many servicemembers and their families lives at state. Hagel is one of the Republicans who never abandoned his genuine love for this country. This country is at its best when the liberal and the conservative arguments are both being presented by sides that genuinely have the country's welfare as the priority. The last decade or two has seen the conservative voice hijacked by a group that put their own selfish interests ahead of the country's. The result is that they've killed the GOP – exept for men like Chuck Hagel who never surrendered to the infiltration.

Obama's Secretary of Defense? This LIB has no problem with that.

Steve in CA   September 18th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

For a few seconds, I was worried about the GOP VP Pick. But then they let her open her mouth. BIG MISTAKE! This is the woman who's ready to get tough with Russia. That way, we can cut taxes, remove all government regulations, and spend the balance on the military! Cold War, Part II.

M. Winners   September 18th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Thank you for your insightful analysis of Gov. Palin's "qualifications" Sen. Hagel. It's obvious from McCain's vetting of Palin he didn't do such a good job.
Happy to see some one add some sanity to the deliberations...

Are you sure about that experience.....check your facts; please. Are you one of those mindless people that also speak of "executive experience?" Don't be a puppet; so easy to control your thoughts. Not only does Obama's experience CRUSH Palin's. but his EDUCATIONAL background far supports his qualifications. What's her educational background???? She only has a BA, in JOURNALISM, which took, um.....5 years and several institutions to achieve.

Further, Bush had experience, so did his dad......and what exactly did they do to help our country? You speak of experience like there is validity in your statement. Go do your homework, don't waste your vote on stupidity.

Obama's crowd is dillusional in every direction.

I have almost always voted Democrat, but I might have voted for Bob Dole had he not changed once he won the nomination. Senator Chuck Hagel is another Republican I might have voted for if given the chance. I respect him, and his opinions are usually based on thoughtful consideration and not knee-jerk party politics.

Well when Bill Clinton ran for President he didn't have any foreign experience and was a Governor just like Palin. He became one of the greats out there with both foreign policy and the economy. If anyone has been to Alaska you can see Russia from one part of the state so I don't know why Hagel thinks that is insulting to America. I find this whole attack on Palin disgusting. Her qualifications well puts her to make decisions for the country just like Clintons did when he was running. Hillary was mocked for the same thing by her own party and I see they are doing the same to Palin by paid Obama supporters on these blogs.

It's funny that whenever Palin is mentioned that the republicans are so quick to thow Obama out there....

Has anyone noticed that she is running against Biden? Let's compare apples to apples here.

They republicans are just trying to spin a really bad decision made by McCain into an "I meant to do that" moment when they trump up her experience.

Obama is irrelevant when discussing Palin. It seems by recent news that he has already done many of the things she is proposing to do, anyways.

If she is so ready than why is she being protected from people who want to ask real questions? I don't recall anyone else being protect like that other than Chelsea Clinton, but she is a kid and not running for anything.

You think she knows as much about the world as Obama? Really? Want to bet your life savings on who would win a test of knowledge?

Obama has a better understanding of the world and the concept of diplomacy than McCain.

There should laws wriiten that have term limits on Senators and Representatives.

Democrats and Republicans alike once they reach Congress do not worry about anything else but how to stay there..

Do you think eiher canidate will change anything with the same people voted in.. and than start worrying about how to stay in Washington..?

Frank Dicken   September 18th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

The truth is there are many republicans that are thinking the same thing but the big red curtain wall is holding them back from saying anything. I think Hagel wants to jump ship. John McCain and Sarah Palin want to blame Wall Street for our economic mess we are in today like they did today in Iowa. The problem is that Wall Street would NOT have been able to do what they've done if John McCain and his great friend and economic adviser Phil Gramm didn't push a deregulation bill in 1999 that took away restrictions on bank and financial firms that were put in place after the Great Depression.

John McCain has a DIRECT responsibility for the economic mess we are in but he wants to try to blame everyone else. What happened to "the buck stops here"? John McCain is a fraud.

Palin claiming foreign policy experience simply because she is from Alaska is a joke. Seriously, people. Let's be reasonable, particularly when it comes to her claim to be knowledgeable about Russia. For example, does the mayor of Plano, Texas (a suburb of Dallas) automatically qualify as an expert on Mexican political science? Even if he became governor of Texas. You need more. At least G.W. spoke Spanish. Give her credit for what she does know (energy issues) and do not give her credit for what she does not know.

Pete   September 18th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Jeez! Chuck Hagel too? If I were a woman, there is no way I would vote for this ticket. She is nothing but eye-candy and IF McCain gets elected she will get stuffed so far into the background the only place you'll ever see here is on CSPAN when she presides over the Senate. She'll be a joke. Is that what you ladies really want? You want to blow your shot at resolving the gender question on this piece of fluff? If she gets in and blows it, it will be another whole generation before a woman gets a serious shot.

With a number of decent and competent Republicans to choose from (I'm a Democrat) McCain went out of his way to pick the very, very least qualified one. There's no way around it: you just have to blame Palin on McCain.

I live in Omaha and truly respect Sen. Hagel. My question to him would be...In his own words, he says Palin's experience is a "stretch." Would he rather have the experience questioned of a VP candidate, or the Presidential candidate?? Of course he won't say it, but everyone knows that Obama has the same lack of experience as Palin.

And I just have a hunch about this....but I bet Palin could take Obama in a game of one on one. He strikes me as a guy who is afraid of contact, and she's a girl who goes looking for it.

I was on a plane once that stopped to refuel in Anchorage. I got off and wandered around the terminal. However, if you go to the right spot in Alaska, on a clear day, you can see some chunk of rock that is part of Russia. Now, since Palin's claiming all this expertise about Russia based on that fact, my question is whether she personally has ever been to that part of Alaska where you can see Russia. If so, there's no doubt about it. She's ready to have her finger on the nuclear button.

Palin is the most qualified Republican, male or female, to be first in line for the highest office in the land. She is more qualified than any Republican woman incuding the Secretary of State, Rice. She is more qualified than any male Senator, Congressman, Governor or cabinet member. Otherwise, why would John McCain choose her to be his running mate?
Let's face it. Being the sportscaster on a very small television station, Miss Wasilla, Mayor of a town that would hardly register in any other state and a two year governor with a record of flip-flopping, ethical misconduct and proven lies on the campaign trail is an outstanding record for a Republican. They will build monuments to this woman, mark my words.

Sen. Hagel is a smart man. We should not be fooled by people attemping to claim they have experience. The facts are what they are. Point being, does the experience one has equal to the job at hand?

Wow, an honest Republican! Amazing! I didn't think there were ANY out there. Palin, besides being horribly unqualified and clueless she is a liar.
And to You sure about that? – Obama is a Constitutional Law Scholar, taught Law Scool for 12 yrs, 8 yrs in the State Senate and 4 yrs in US Senate, co wrote and co sponsored 131 bills and has run the most successful, progressive minded campaign in history. Palin is no where near his level and there is no comparison between the two. Palin is hamburger, Obama is filet mignon.

I have to laugh at all the "prominent republicans" like Romney, Guliani, etc. who have absolutely raped their own political credibility by trumpeting this woman's qualifications.

I mean, could McCain have picked a bigger train wreck? This woman epitomizes EVERYTHING that is wrong in politics today.

Good for Hagel to call a spade a spade.....I imagine you'll see a few others do the same to save their own credibility as McCain and Palin head off into the sunset on the bridge to nowhere.....

What McCain didnot equate in this decision is that not just any woman will do, Palin and Clinton are total opposites on the issues and finally, I can't think of many woman (and some men as well to be fair) in the political arena that are Clinton's equal.

The outrage throughout the country over palin is not about her sordid family mess or her mooseburgers or her hairdo.

It is over her inability to tell the truth, her sad overestimation of her own abilities, and her dogged determination to tell lies and fabrications even when faced with the glaring truth.

It is her total lack of integrity or honor that causes the outrage.

BJGT   September 18th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Hagle is an honorable man for daring to go outside of party lines and say which I suspect many other republicans, are actually thinking.

Palin is totally unqualified and unprepared to be VP let alone .

Obama has wisely chosen Biden who is well prepared for the responsibility of the job.

Sen McCain has been very reckless and lacking in judgement. His decision to choose Gov Palin as VP is not putting country first. It is more a case of putting his own ambition first.

The next thing we know, Palin will tell the Russians that it is one thing to invade Georgia, but they better leave Alabama alone! Then again, she probably thinks that the Gulf war was fought on the beaches of Galveston and Pensacola. Anyway, we need to give her a break. She makes quite a good cheerleader, now, doesn't she? The GOP has always loved its celebrities, now they have one. What get's me is they always push "values," and values are very important, seriously. One of the best values is honesty. Wait a minute, Senator Hagel!
Sarah Palin can see RUSSIA.... if she travels about 1,000 miles from her home to a remote, uninhabited island in the middle of the Bering Strait, and, of course, if the weather is good.
Now, what can YOU see from Nebraska? South Dakota, Iowa, Colorado, MIssouri, Kansas and Wyoming..... now, how many of THOSE are foreign countries, anyway?
Geez, at least if you lived in Alabama, you could claim to be able to see Georgia, which we all know is being occupied by Russia.

Some foreign policy expert YOU are, Senator Hagel......

Why, in her first interview, she stated that we shouldn't allow Russia to control its own oil and gas...... she's obviously the expert, eh?

I know he is not black, or a women, but there has got to be something positive and interesting about him that is worth reporting.
