GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (CNN) - John McCain and Sarah Palin hold opposite opinions on the prospect of drilling for oil in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Reserve - Palin supports drilling in ANWR. McCain opposes it. But in their first unscripted appearance together on Wednesday evening, the running mates telegraphed that they’ll just agree to disagree.
At one moment during the pair’s first joint town hall meeting, a voter inquired about their position on offshore drilling. Palin obliged, arguing for drilling off America’s coastline, but she also argued for more forcefully than McCain has in the past for drilling onshore, on lands already leased for oil exploration.
“When people are hurting, they need to tap those resources and get those sources flowing,” she said, referring to high gas prices.
Talking about onshore drilling comes easy to Palin - since becoming governor in 2006, she has pressed for more energy exploration in ANWR and elsewhere in Alaska, often taking her argument to national media outlets.
And if her remarks in Grand Rapids sounded familiar, it’s because she’s offered very similar reasoning in the past when making the case for opening up ANWR for drilling.
“There are still a lot of places in America of course that need to be tapped,” she said at the town hall. “There are proven resources in these areas in Alaska, in the Dakotas, some new finds there. We have billions and billions and billions of barrels of oil underground in the United States of America. We have hundreds of trillions of cubic feet of clean, green natural gas onshore and offshore.”
McCain and Palin’s disagreement on ANWR was brought to the fore on Wednesday when a voter asked the Alaska governor if she had been able to change’s McCain’s mind on the issue.
“Still working on it!,” Palin said, to laughter and applause.
“This meeting is adjourned,” McCain cracked.
Indeed, early on in the event, McCain seemed to pre-emptively knock down the significance of any policy disputes between the two candidates. Along with drilling in ANWR, McCain and Palin don’t see eye to eye on other issues, such as stem cell research and whether or not global warming is man-made.
“By the way, you may figure out from time to time, Sarah and I don’t agree on every issue,” he said. “What do you expect of two mavericks, to agree on everything? Eh?”

Maybe if McCain chose his VP candidate based on a real ability to carry on a McCain administration if he became incapacitated instead of appeasing Rush Limbaugh, he wouldn't be sharing his ticket with someone with whom he so fundamentally disagrees.

It's surprising to me that a Presidential ticket has several key differences like they do. IMO, that's not a good thing because we would never know what they were going to do if they do happen to win this election (perish the thought). Even if they choose a position I disagree with them on (in this case its Sarah's position – drilling is a good idea in offshore areas, but they need to keep ANWR off the table) I would rather them do that than to continue to agree to disagree. Atleast that way I would have some idea as to what to expect from them if we do happen to get stuck with them the next 4 years (scary thought).

Palin said yesterday in the town hall "We'll be ready by January.....I'll be ready." Why hasn't anybody picked on that? She is admitting she is not ready right now with that statement. And she does not give any specifics. All of her answers are very generic, we want specifics.

No American should have an issue with drilling on land already leased for the purpose of drilling. Why don't you start there and then see where things go. It makes no sense to me to suddenly make a mssive amount of new locations available for drilling because it will lead to a cadre of new facilities built only to maintain the status quo on our oil dependence. We need to move forward into new technologies if we are to excell in the future. New technology is what will bring countless new jobs to American shores.

The problem with opening up more land (or coastal shelf) for oil exploration it that it won't provide any immediate increase in supply, and once oil is found and exploited, it will not account for more than a few percent of total production. That is, it will not affect the price of oil.
ANWR drilling, offshore drilling, &c., are just another "economic" gimmick, just like The Summer Gas Tax Holiday. They sound good to people who don't pay attention or lack understanding of economics, but the result is no improvement to the economy and delaying the implementation of real policies.
WHY DISCUSS DETAILS its not important to have details on any issues or polices right now. Who cares.
I saw part of that Town Hall and it was a joke. It was like she was an intern getting to make a presentation for an important meeting wiht her boss standing right over her ready to clean up any mistakes.

The truth is that the more oil that is extracted from the earh's remaining reserves, the less will exist. It will just run out sooner if we step up the drilling.
It will not run out while any of us living today inhabits this earth.

The petrochemicals derived from oil produce thousands of products we take for granted every day. The list is huge. Look it up on Google.
But the reason we are running out is that we are burning it up as fuel.
That is really the most stupid use for it that can be imagined.
The problem we have is not energy–we have multiple sources of energy that we cannot exhaust.
The problem is using oil for fuel and burning it up.
Drilling now for all the earth's remaining reserves just to burn it up will break our addiction to oil alright, but deny future generations of the many useful products that they could have used if we had not burned up the source.

She pulled in $27 million in earmarks as mayor, requested $450 million in earmarks as governor and even supported the state's notorious Bridge to Nowhere before she opposed it. We have trillions of cubic feet of methane hydrates too in the ocean-but digging them out could destabilize our entire marine ecosystem-including our food source, quintuple global warming rates, and cost more to remove than the energy they contain. The same could be said of all the natural gas and oil in the US. Ironically, it will only be economically feasible to tap when oil and gas prices are sky-high. Needless to say the environmental damage from drilling is of little concern to Palin. Her policy reminds of an 19th century whaler espousing the virtues of using whale oil relative to protecting whales. Time to move on to other energy sources Sarah. I know it stuffs the coffers of the Alaskan state government, but it is yet another case of trading our children's and grandchildren's future for the wants of old people (Republicans have made the same trade with our deficit too). Why do you care so much for saving unborn babies and then are okay with saddling them with debt and a destroyed environment when they grow up?

Gas was forced to upwards of $4 a gallon when the price of oil reached almost $150 a barrel. It doesn;t get much press, but oil has dropped 1/3 down to around $100 a barrel. Gas prices still hover around $4 a gallon. Drilling for more is not the problem, people.

Um, how many times does it need to be explained that it will take, at the least, one year plus to get any oil from offshore drilling. Then the oil companies can sell that oil to anyone, and guess who that is? China and India. At best, we'd see about 2 days worth of oil supply in about 4 years. I cram to understand how these two can be taken seriously. We are taking a huge gamble by even considering them for the Presidency and Vice Presidency. Mccain is just to old to be working anywhere at this point. I know a lot of elderly people that do have have their senses with them, and he is not one of them. This woman scares me to death and has caused me to start the blue-print for my underground bunker. OMG-she lies without blinking. Why is she ALLOWED to not testify for an investigation? How could anybody not be concerned with the fact that she thinks she is above the law. She should be doing plays on broadway with all the drama she brings to the table. Her life is like a soap opera in it's last interesting season. Ms. Palin clearly needs to be home with her infant and mom to be teenage daughter.
Barak may be new to the scene and my not have years and years in Washington. I can tell you that I would trust him waaaaay before I EVER trust Mccain-Palin to have at least a clue as to what is REALLY going on in AMERICA. Final note: Do you we really want anoher Pathological Liar in the White House....?

OBAMA/BIDEN 2008/2012
The questions at the Town Hall had to be planted, neither of them were challenged in any way. Did you notice she said "try to stump me on foreign policy", then the subject was dropped. There was nothing informative about the Town Hall meeting last night. These two are a Circus Act at best. I have noticed all of the extremely wealthy are now endorsing McSame because of the tax breaks he is giving the wealthy. Last night he was endorsed by Donald Trump on Larry King and Rothschild is backing him as well.
Haven't we just spent eight long years dealing with the negatives that have come from having a "Maverick" running around using his "Cowboy Diplomacy" to alienate all of our allies and harsh partisan politics to divide and concur at home? Do we really want to continue that?
To some of us the term "Maverick" means uncooperative, self-serving, and irresponsible when used to describe a person. At this point we need someone that will foster cooperation and unity. We need a "Leader" that will unite and lead the U.S. and the world, not a "Maverick" that will charge off in his own direction making statements like “if you aren't with us, you're against us."
If these "Patriots" truly believe that America is the greatest country in the world, then they should be prepared to work within the greatest political system in the world to resolve its problems. Circumventing the Constitution and Bill of Rights and ignoring the will of the people at every turn (as you might expect a "Maverick" to do) does not demonstrate a proper understanding of or respect for the balanced structure of our government.
We've had eight years of a "Maverick" running around making a mess of America. We need a "Leader."

I don't think it's a joking matter when Sen McCain may very well not make it through his first term, and then we'd have Gov Palin drilling in a wildlife refuge sensible citizens agree should be safe from exploitation.
An unintended consequence of them campaigning together:
Doesn't he look older, paler, and generally unwell next to her? Rather feable.

ANWR is not a joke. I don't think the hundreds of threatened wildlife species would find any humor in the destruction of their habitats.
"Get those sources flowing"?? As if any ANWR oil would be available in the next decade?! John McCain will be LONG GONE from this earth before we see a drop of that pipeline oil, which, by the way, will get us through a couple years, at best, before we're screwed again.
If I had one wish, it would be that Americans had some common sense.
