McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday.
Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site gawker.com.

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

    Demons? Don't be silly.

This whole email issue should have never happened, though. The messages we're reading about should never have been on yahoo. It's improper to commingle public business with personal communications.

The management of the Wasilla Sports complex was also improper. Palin built a municipal facility on land that didn't belong to the city, which is both improper and inept.

Nonetheless, S, your paranoia is just that. Palin may just be a garden variety radical, but some of her supporters are puerile name-callers and wackos.

Question: Who has the most to gain (they think) from hacking into the Governor's email and posting them for public consumption? Case solved!

I am appalled by the EXTREME steps that you angry liberals would go to in order to tear down this woman. Hacking into her personal email?1? That is disgraceful. I am frightened by the kind of irresponsible "I worship you and would do anything for you" behavior that Obama seems to inspire in some of you obviously insecure and weak-minded people.

Didn't Sarah Palin herself blow the whistle on a fellow co-worker for improperly using his email working on campaign issues which he was forced to resign? Now we are finding out even after blowing the whistle on her co-workers she is doing the exact same type of thing. Once again a liar and hypocrite. I'm starting to lose track of all the lies there are so many.

yep, our tax dollars at work, it's more important to find who hacked into Sarah's email account then pedophiles lurking around the net.

Smear campaign? And you know this how? The McCant./Payless ticket is not one for our country. It's freightening what would happen if they're voted in.

Whats the big deal about her email being "Hacked" The Government snoops into our emails and personal lifes daily, only under the cloak of "Security". People get hacked every day, but does the government really care? NO. If Palin is supposed to be "one of us" then do what everybody else does, suck it up, butch up and get a new email account.

This isn't Obama. It's that group called "Anonymous"–made up of troublemakers, jobless kids and protestors. This illegal act should be prosecuted. It's a modern day Watergate–break-in.

Outside the topic of illegal entry into someone's email box...my concern would be with how Palin has used the Yahoo account.
Obviously she had a government supplied and administered account that should be used for all work related issues.
A personal account should not. Email is archived for legal reasons as well as for standard backup/recovery.
If she was using the Yahoo account for chit chat, no problem. But if she was conducting government business thru it, then an ethical issue can be raised.

Yes she is a liar, and the people deserve to know. Who ever hacked her acct. was wrong to do it but if she was honest and truthful what does she have to hide. It isn't the Obama camp either. The GOPers always blame him to try and get some lie to stick but we the people know the truth. Sarah palin what do you have to hide. And another piece of news from Iowa where McShame and Palen will be speaking, apparently our 10 billion flood here in Iowa doesn't matter to McShame cause we asked him to see the damage here and he said he doen't have the time, yes McShame I guess we know what matters to you and it isn't the people. You come here when its flooding and get in the way, and then when we want you to come and see the aftermath you can't even care enough to make time for us. McSame don't bother coming then cause we are not going to vote for someone who doesn't care about us and that is you. Obama 08,12 I'm voting for someone who cares about IOWA thats Barack Obama!!!

It's the Obama campaign and his hoards of online hackers.
Change indeed. Obama is just another sleeze like the
friends he selects. CNN, you should stop patronizing Obama.
Let the people of America select the next president of the
United States instead of you ramming Obama down their throats.
He is no saint and he can't walk on water!

"THAT OBAMA HAS UNLEASHED ON SARAH "

It is the McCain camp that has unleashed the war... and this is just another part of it. The Obama campaign is not responsible for this hack.

Decent family? Well maybe... except she's completely unqualified to be VP much less President.

Maybe if repubs ever practiced what they preached... it wouldn't have gone this far.

Wow, nice glossing over how Palin used the PERSONAL email address for GOVERNMENTAL business, in an effort to avoid having to disclose!

    Way to go, CNN!

Why does it have to be someone from Obama's campaign who has done this?
Obama's campaign has done nothing wrong or illegal. Tell me one thing that Obama's campaign has said about Palin that is a lie?
I guess we will find out at the debate between the vice presidential candidates who is the better person to represent this country.
Also your precious McCain says he is going to change things? He is one of the good ole boys that Palin loves saying she is going to take on.
BTW I am a female voter that is voting for Obama/Biden!

where did the several hundred comments from yesterday go?

"S," stop yelling. Obama's got nothing to do with "Anonymous," and claiming so makes you look like you're short a few marbles.

What ever and get a life. Just because somone hacked in doesnt mean the Obama camp is behind it. However, lets just see what all gets posted and what this un-qualified Palin is trying to hide. O-and bye the way, funny how everyone is catching onto her and that she has no business being nominated for VP. The Honeymoon is over and the polls are showing it. After all of this hoopla about her and the conservative side, Obama has weathered the storm and is back on top of the polls.

OBAMA/ BIDEN 08, Yes we can.
    Fired up....Ready 2 Go!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was waiting for a negative comment about Obama's campaign doing something against Palin..To "S" you need to read the facts before you blog...

PALIN WAS ALREADY UNDER INVESTIGATION SINCE JULY AND THAT WAS WAY BEFORE SHE WAS THE VP PICK....SO THE ONLY SMEAR TACTICS IS THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN WHICH EVERYBODY KNOWS IT...THERE WAS EVEN AN ARTICLE IN TIME STATING THAT THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN IS PLAYING REAL DIRTY POLITICS AND THE SMEAR ATTACK ON OBAMA THEY HAVE BEEN PULLING IS LIES...THEY EVEN WENT AS FAR AS CALLING MCCAIN & PALIN LIARS........

OBAMA WILL PREVAIL CAUSE "GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY!!!!! MCCAIN HAS NO HONOR......

McCain's campaign is pathetic. It is obvious they are trying to create a distraction from Palin's investigation in Alaska and avoid discussing issue #, the ECONOMY. These guys are done! McCain should hire a new set of campaign managers. These are a bunch of nitwits.

Why don't you all get real!! John McCain and Palin are extreme right wingers and they have used SMEAR tactics. The question is: would you really want Palin to be the President if something should happen to McCain? It scares me!

Hehe, yeah ok Obama does the smearing. The McShame campaign and and ONLY the McShame has done the smearing. The facts that have come out about SP are facts...just because you don't like those facts doesn't make them smears. But nice try.
