McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday.
Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site gawker.com.

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

Just give me a break! This is simply another source of distraction. I feel so sad when Americans treat the political issues of their system with intellectual deficiency!! The thought that someone as old as McCain with limited cognitive abilties, and Palin so full of herself could dominate the political scene. Second these folks to the UK, Germany, or even French voters and they will literally "throw up."

    To comment from s:
How can you say that it's a smear by Obama when we don't even know the facts yet? Your comment is ridiculous and hateful. What makes you think that Palin will make a great president? She certainly has not been a great governor!
    Vote Obama!

Funny that the liberal people who support Obama and always cry about their privacy rights being violated by the Bush administration are the same people behind hacking her private email account.

    Another point of correction:

in response to 9/18/8:20amET. Only God can decide who is good and decent. We must decide by "facts". Looks like McClaine brought Palin in as a "token". But, she is no Hilary, not that I would have voted for Hilary. What powers would she really have in the McCain relm? She is a Trojen Horse that if brought into Washington, may possibly have the same results.

I am sure Democrats have no problem with her email being stolen. They believe that government should control every aspect of your life and that everyone should be able to spy on their neighbors. Reminds me of the Third Reich.

I love it. Evertime something comes out with regards to Sarah Palin it's immediately the Democrats fault. Possibly, if the McCain campaign had thoroughly vetted and/or given the media access to Sarah Palin all of these smears (as you call them) would not have occurred.
Also, my wife and I make a great family , but trust me, neither of us would make a great vice president.
Thank you media for doing your job.

Sarah Palin is a right-wing bible thumping radical. She will take away all your rights in the name of god. Any one who thinks that the war in Iraq is god's will needs to re-examine thier religion. Those are the same beliefs that radical muslims have...so Sarah must be a radical muslim and not a christian. She needs to stay up in Alaska where her frozen brain won't endanger the lives of intelligent people. As a veteran I am shocked at her statements...she has no clue about the real world. I would bet money that her son will never go 'in harm's way' and will probably end up in some safe area with lots of protection. God forbid her little boy might have to fight.

Since we don't know yet IF Palin's email was hacked, or WHO did it, it seems a little hasty to accuse the Obama campaign of anything yet.
Demonizing the opposition makes for an uncivil society.

So let's get the facts first, before we start 'spinning' the story.

Not sure what in the world the above comment by "S" has to do with anything about this subject. This is not a smear the Obama camp has anything to do with.

What this is concerning is using a a very unsecured option (personal yahoo account) to conduct government business.

Why in the world would someone use this type of account to conduct very sensitive business you ask?

Because this account can not be subpoenaed.

So on one hand, she protects herself from the law, a little trick picked up from the Bush administration.

On the other hand, someone who uses an unsecured account makes valuable information easily accessible for cyber-criminals/terrorists.

This is horrible judgment at very best.

WHO THE HELL WOULD USE YAHOO TO CONDUCT GOVERNMENT BUSINESS?

  22. Blue Collar Workers for Obama

Palin would not testify in trooopergate and now wants an investigation into her e-mail. The fact is that she used this e-mail account to direct attacks at people while she was in office.

Oh my god, do we really want this woman to be in the white house for the next 4 years. I am so sick of this elections. The polls should have Obama by a landslide.

People wake up and see what is happening to our country. Republicans are trying to trick you again with their lies. Don't fall for it.

After the White House denounces McCain's fundamental argument, and admits that George Bush is too overwhelmed to discus economical failure with the American people

Anybody who votes McCain is an ignorant, fascist traitor that should be exiled for their gross denial of doing what's best for the United States. Country First, yeah right, what they mean to say is Me First.
