McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday.
Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site gawker.com.

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

This makes me sick. The creep that did this should feel very comfortable in the socialist government that we are heading toward if the libs have their way. OH, and thanks, CNN, for remembering to put the quip about Palin facing questions regarding her personal email. For a second, I thought that you may be simply reporting the news in respectable way but you had to remind me that everything you print has to cast anyone who is not Obama in a negative light. Shame on me for getting my hopes up.

Something maybe in there that she doesn't want the public to see? Something maybe about Troopergate? Probably just a bunch of porn spam. But still...

S, this has nothing to do with the Obama campaign!
While the FBI tries to track down those responsible for the hacking, I hope they also take a close look at the government business Palin conducted on her personal account. She claims to want transparency in government, yet by most accounts is a very secretive Governor.
We've had 8 years of an administration that is secretive, lies to the American people, and think they are above the laws the rest of us have to live by.
No More! No Way! No McCain! No Palin!

Sounds like most of her emails were to her 6 state paid nannies who take care of her children/maid service. As it turns out, she's not the super mom she proclaimed to be...she get alot of state paid help!

    OBAMA FOR A NEW DIRECTION!

Here it comes-the McCain campaign trying to shift the attention away from issues. No one cares. The stock market is poised to drop 1,000 points this week and we are about to inherit $1 trillion in debt from bailouts. This is of no moment to the voters. We want substance! It's too late in the day to fight lipstick rumors.

S, why do you think Obama had something to do with this? The McCain campaign will do any thing to get some media coverage. They're not talking about the fact that this woman has no clue of what to do if something happen to Mr. McCain. Please save it, and talk about the issue please.....

    LETS SEE TWO POSSIBLE SCENARIOS:

    1) MOST LIKELY THE REPUBLICANS DID THIS SO THAT THE EMAILS WERE DESTROYED BECAUSE PALIN IS GUILTY OF SOMETHING.

    2) IF PALIN IS INNOCENT WHY IS HER ATTORNEY GENERAL GOING TO BREAK THE LAW AND IGNORE THE SUPEONAS, SOUNDS JUST LIKE BUSH. REPUBLICANS WILL DO ANYTHING TO WIN.

FINALLY IT IS CLEAR THAT IF THIS ELECTION IS CLOSE THE NEW COMPANY FORMALLY DIEBOLD WILL PLAY A ROLL IN STEALING IT FOR THE GOP, SADLY IF OBAMA WAS 100% WHITE (NOT JUST 50%) THIS ELECTION WOULD NOT EVEN BE CLOSE. AMERICA IS A RACIST UNEDUCATED MESS.

We know why the hackers didnt go after McCain's email, there's not much in there except the initial yahoo welcome letter and may be a test email from his grandson who helped him set up his account.
    Hackers need to crack his personal morse code device - -. .- ... .. -. -.- .. -. –. ... .... .. .–. (translation) On a sinking ship

    Another point of correction:
Just give me a break! This is simply another source of distraction. I feel so sad when Americans treat the political issues of their system with intellectual deficiency!! The thought that someone as old as McCain with limited cognitive abilties, and Palin so full of herself could dominate the political scene amazes the world but the U.S. Send these folks to the UK, Germany, or even French voters and they will literally "throw up."

If the American people are so dumb that a Constitutional Scholar has to convince them about what they have and continue to experience in the recent 8 years, then Americans truly need help!

How do you know if they good and decent people? Have you met them, other than what you have read. Blame everything that happens to Palin on Obama now that shows your bias. Stick to the issues, high gas prices, groceries have gone up no millions without healthcare. That is what America will be concern with come Nov 4. Not e-mails or lipstick! Your right America is waking up! And they don't won't to re-live the 8 year nightmare with McCain/Palin. Vote on the issue America and take back your dignity! ENOUGH!

Why does she blame Obama for all her "problems"? This lady needs a major dose of reality. But then, I'm sure she's doing her best considering her political experience - or lack of it.

This is not a "smear" tactic, whomever is responsible faces criminal charges and the Obama campaign is not foolish enough to be involved. I think making her emails public would certainly show what she is made of – good, bad, or otherwise. Nothing is more revealing than those things you considered private.

Taking one out of the Bush playbook, eh Sarah? Yes, by all means, that proves that Sarah's a "maverick game-changer."

If you think she'd make a great VP, you'd probably want to appoint my pet bird to a cabinet post.

Excuse me 's' but you are an idiot. There is no smear except from the McOld campaign. No one said she was a demon but come on, I think she needs a little vetting considering McOld's health, mental condition, and age. Stop whining so much.

THIS ALL OUT SMEAR CAMPAIGN THAT OBAMA HAS UNLEASHED ON SARAH PALIN WILL BACKFIRE. THE PALIN FAMILY ARE NOT .........blah blah ......blah.... blah

This has nothing to do with Obama. Get a grip on yourself. You don't see Obama blaming McCain about some racist who vandalized his posters with swastikas and racial slurs do you? Get over yourself "S".

    S September 18th 2008 8:20 am ET.

Please stop whinning and allow Americans to vet Gov. Palin since evidentally the McCain campaign didn't have time to vet this candidate.

At this time of war, and an unstable economy the American people don't have another 8yrs to play with Republicans simply because someone's ego wants to be in the BIG SEAT.

Personally, I am watching Gov. Palin and what I find is a rehearse candidate who avoids direct questions and blurts out answers no one even asked her.

ABC interview...Charlie Gibson never asked about 6.1 unemployment rate

Foxnews H&C...she controlled the questions and never answered Hannity. (although he was all giggly and never insisited)

BUT WAIT UNTIL CNN GETS A HOLD OF HER....SHE WILL WISH SHE HAD STAYED IN ALASKA.

I hope the news media will really start looking into this women. Why did the emails disappear. What exactly is this women doing. We deserve the truth. Whose is the mother of Trig! I hope the media gets over there fear and broaches these issues. This is really scary. A VP candidate who does not want to talk, but seems to be covering up a heck of alot!

  25. White evangelical now for obama--Repugs are liars

These liars. We don't even know what to believe now.

They probably did it themselves to take our minds of the issues as they always do.
    It won't work this time.
