McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday.
Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site gawker.com.

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

Wow S, your comment blaming Obama, is it credible? Has the FBI contacted you and told you it was done by Obama.

let me know, because none of the news media is reporting this.
O'reilly said last night that this is a sleeze website and they do it all the time.

Considering the constant, personalized disrespect toward McCain and Palin shown by the liberal media, no wonder that overzealous individuals get the idea that it is permitted – even funny – to attack Republican candidates in any personal way. When we hear draft dodgers like Chris Matthews mocking and belittling war hero McCain, or Barbara Walters speak to McCain as if he were her gardener, some of their viewers get the idea that it is "open season" on the personal attacks.

    Wow typical response.
I get it. Anything bad that happens to the Republican tickt just blame Obama. If the McCain camp would have been upfront with the American people, the hackers & other individuals would not be trying so hard to find out about the troopergate scandal.

I cannot believe that she is allowed to have Goverment property on her personal e-mail this is absolutley shocking. Now it is going to cost big bucks for investigating this. Why is she not being charged for this.?

This is very interesting. She calls on the law when someone else has allegedly done her harm, with a presumption of guilt attached to the accusation: Obama. And she refuses to obey the law when it makes her vulnerable by refusing to take part in a bi-partisan probe of her activities in Alaska. What other kind of probe should it be?

Obama's smear campaign??? Oh, that's a good one! The Republicans have created entire political careers out of smearing their opposition and they are doing it again this year. But, in addition to smear, they add fear. It's good ole smear and fear. Jesse Helms may be dead but his legacy lives on.
You know, when I first heard about this email story, the first thing I thought of was that the Republicans could be staging the whole thing in order for people to feel sorry for her and so that the Party can play victim again. After all, that seems to be a typical mode of operating for rigth wing: Attack and play victim. I wouldn't be surprised if this was an attention diverter that was planned just as Palin is being investigated and her supporters are refusing to cooperate on "Troopergate".

s..first of all there is no proof that obama is behind this...
Now to the issue, and the question you ahve to ask yourself is why were these accounts used in the first place? to keep things that she was doing from the public eye while she was gov? I don't know but makes one wonder.
Also why of these were out ther were the accounts not closed, when she became the VP candidate? Was it even thought of or might it have been that they wanted to leave them openso that they could be hacked, and then be able to scream about it.
You would think that since mcCain invented the blackberry he would have known how to protect her private email. Some thing smells fishy here....almost Watergate like.

Good. May the perpetrators be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

But, tdo not let this detract from the numerous allegations that Palin, and members of her governor's administration, conducted some of their state business on personal e-mail accounts.

Oh baloney, grow up. Obama didn't hack into Palin's account, the hacker probably isn't even political. And smear tactics are just what the Repubs use every four years. The Obamas are a good and decent family and Obama will make a great president. I'm so sick of repubs trying to claim "family values", as if you've got a lock on loving your family and Democrats don't love theirs. At least Obama showed the good judgement to be against this stupid war in Iraq that has caused our country to be on the verge of bankruptcy. And I seriously wonder about the "good and decent" values of someone who can go up in a plane and shoot defenseless animals for the "fun" of it. Hardly Christian of her. She should have been paying more attention to where her teenaged daughter was. That's what "good and decent" mothers do. And no, I'm not picking on Bristol, I'm just saying that most mothers would have given a rat's behind what their daughter was up to but Ms. Palin was too busy trying to scam millions on the Bridge to Nowhere project, get her ex-bro-in-law fired, and killing animals to care.

For you to blame this on the Obama campaign is totally ridiculous. It seems that the McCain Campaign does nothing better than play the blame game instead of admitting their actions own that caused this uproar in the first place.

I don't want people reading my personal email, either - Dick Cheney, NSA employees, the FBI - without a warrant, they should stay out. Don't you agree, McCain/Palin supporters?

Of course, I haven't used my personal email to commit any crimes, like conducting state business on my personal account. It doesn't appear that Mrs. Palin can say the same.
