McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday.
Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site gawker.com.

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

I know some of you are going to attack Palin because she may have used her personal email to contact a person or two for work.

But, seriously folks, those that work in a field where you speak with clients all the time on both a private and public level know full well you do whatever it takes.

I work at home sometimes, and I have to use my personal email account to do business. The email system at work cannot be setup at my home.

So, if I ever run for office one day, I cannot wait for thousands of rude bloggers to tear me a new one when they do not know what they are even talking about...

This was NOT endorsed my Obama. This is Anonymous at work. Just as nobody paid them to take on Scientology, they saw injustice, and found a way to fight it. Whether the contents of the E-mails are every fully released or not, they have proven that she lied, and possibly broke the law, by using her personal E-mail to conduct government business, probably to try and keep it from being released to investigators... a tactic already well played by the Bush administration.

    LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES AMERICA!

We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget.

S, Obama is responsible for this? How is that again? I'd like to know how everythign is Obama's fault. Palin is a train wreck who is constantly lying despite everyone knowing what she says is not true. But I guess it's Obama's fault that Palin is lying. Maybe Obama wrote her speeches for her.

    Please. Get a life.

S, are you implying that Obama hacked (if it's indeed true that her email was hacked) Palin's email? The suggestion is laughable, no matter which candidate one supports.

This is an invasion of privacy, BUT why would a government employee conduct official business on yahoo and not the government email system UNLESS she is trying to hide something from the public? Very poor judgement , Sarah Palin. If a democratic candidate had the same resume as Palin the reactionary right would be all over that candidate for poor judgement and experience.

Heck for all we know it was John McCain who hacked into her email to try and learn more about her. Since he doesn't have a clue!

  11. Palin = Fail

I'm glad it was hacked. What the hell is she doing conducting official government buiness through private email anyway? Good, I hope it all gets exposed and she is held accountable for her stupidity. She only did this because she thought she could circumvent laws regarding government email accounts and now it has been exposed.

No smears here, just good old-fashioned whistle-blowing.

It was reported that she used this account for business purposes in Alaska.

Who uses a Yahoo Email account to do state business?

Don't these responses sound like they are trying to pin this on the "evil Democrats."

Maybe when and IF they find out who did it, the person(s) can ignore the arrest or subpoena....because according to HER, its OK to be ABOVE the LAW.

This is the kind of thing America needs to watch out for!

These "hackers on steroids" have been tormenting the public for too long! What will we do when such evil scummy sites like Anontalk and Ebaumsworld start to hack into the Pentagon? These scrupleless people will have no qualms with selling this information to the Chinese!

These groups, this "internet hate machine" will be the end of this country. Even worse now that you consider this recent event linking them to the Obama campaign. It's a shame, I almost respected him. He was so well spoken, but now he's simply uppity.

Two words about this story. "WHO CARES."

You would think CNN would have the judgement to make better use of it time and space.

Focus more of their energy on why Palin refuses to answer questions from the press and on the Keating 5 and McCain's involvement with that.

The Republican ticket wants to keep Palin in the spotlight ONLY TO DISTRCT the real tough issues away from McCain. He, himself, said he knows very little about economics and healthcare. Of course, Miss Alaska can only deal with the simple questions too...tha't why she has to use a teleprompter 100% of the time.

The Republican ticket is a disaster.

S, Wake up and smell the roses. Sarah Palin broke the law when she used a personal e-mail account for government business to avoid oversight. Whoever hacked into her personal e-mail also broke the law, but they did it to prove she was a lawbreaker. At this time there is zero proof that anybody connected to Obama had anything to do with this.

Shouldn't we let the FBI/Secret Service complete their investigation and learn who actually hacked into her account, and then determine who they may or may not be connected with?

While we are talking about letting appointed government agencies complete their investigations, shouldn't Sarah cooperate with the Troopergate investigation being conducted by a non-partisan elected Alaskan government body?

I didn't list my e-mail account as a contact along with this comment, because I have had my account hacked into twice in the last 90-days. Get used to it folks, there are a lot of predators out there, and they will hack into ANYONE, even more so if you are in the public eye.

I would not count Palin's e-mail account being hacked into as "political espionage" of any variety. It's probably a 16 year old with some skill and far too much time on their hands.

Given how much personal and financial information flies over everyone's e-mail, I hope this shows Republicans and Democrats that we need better privacy controls or ANY of us is in danger of having our information compromised.

Sorry Governor, you're no better than the rest of us in this case, and if the FBI is willing to investigate this e-mail intrusion, we can keep them hellaciously busy investigating the rest of all e-mail intrusions.

The "hacker" has already "confessed". He didn't give his real name but he posted the whole story on the site where "anonymous" hangs out.

The FBI needs to read Michelle Malkin's blog... she's got the whole story and some people in the comments have a pretty good idea who the "hacker" is.

  25. MAKE SARAH GO AWAY! WE WANT DOLLY!

McCain picked someone that only brings her gender to the ticket. So, we Americans deserve a more qualified VP that fits these standards.

    DOLLY! DOLLY! DOLLY PARTON!

Now that is what I call a qualified woman, because her “BIG HAIR“ puts her closer to God than Palin!

And what did YOU think I was talking about?
