McCain camp seeks investigation over reported e-mail hack

Palin's personal e-mail was reportedly hacked Wednesday.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."

The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site gawker.com.

FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.

"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

The e-mails shown include one from July between Palin and Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and another dated earlier this week from Amy McCorkell, the woman Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business - prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

  1. FINALLY!

Finally this happened! It was only a matter of time when a government official uses Yahoo! email for state business. It is ridiculous. She used it to avoid Alaskan law and freedom of information laws. Is this the person you want to be the Vice President of the United States? I was a McCain supporter until he selected this unqualified partner.

I will now be voting for Barack Obama and I wait to see the rest of the hacked emails and how they play into the troopergate ethics case.

  2. Two wrongs make no one right.

No matter which side of the fence you're on, the law must be respected. No one has any business hacking anyone else's email and subsequently distributing it.

On the other hand, it's pretty dumb to have trusted any important email to a web based account – they get hacked all the time.

Palin and her staff should not have been trying to skirt the law themselves by using personal email to avoid potential subpoenas.

Lies and tricks are More of the Same.

  4. Questioner

Palin's not the first to have e-mail hacked. Doesn't make it right, but she should know better than to use it for "sensitive" items.

Speaking of "hacking", what happened to the piece with McCain and Palin. Thousands of us submited questions and it didn't air last night. Wrong night? Palin-McCain backed out? CNN pulled the plug? Expanation please.

    HAPPENING NOW: "McCain-Palin in Michigan"

    A headline from yesterday's nes.

Shut the hell up Sarah and stop whining. You sound more like McCain everyday. Looking forward to your guilty verdict in October. Sweet!

I continued to be amazed by this campaign, and how off the point the always seem to be. And the press and people continue to let them do it.

How come this story isn't, yes this is a violation of the law. Yes hackers are bad. But what about Sarah Palin's judgment. Guess what? Anonymous internet email accounts aren't secure!! Big News!! They get hacked!

Can can a governor of Alaska be this naive about the internet? What about her judgment to use a Yahoo! account instead of using the secure, encrypted email system I'm sure she has installed for the state government. If she even knows they have one.

She's like a junior high school child. "let's use yahoo and talk about our enemies so nobody can see us..."

Yikes. And the Republicans want her to lead our government.

  7. If you like McCain-Palin, you must love being lied to

Oh my goodness, you mean Gov. Palin's rights have been trampled on? Kinda like those of the people of the State of Alaska to have a fair investigation into her handling of the firing of a Public Safety Official? Hmmm, typical Republican HYPOCRISY!!!

Welcome to the big leagues Palin! You’re not in small town Alaska anymore. I can’t wait to see her and Mc Bush look ridiculous in the debates. Just hope Mc Bush doesn’t have too many senior moments. Like he did when he said the fundamentals of the economy are strong, and when Lieberman and to explain the difference between the Shiites and the Sunnies. Probably should have picked Liberman at least he has some foreign policy experience and knows who we are fighting against in the Iraq.

This is how average Americans also feel about the administration's policy of easedropping on personal phone conversaitons etc. Perhaps if McCain/Palin win in November they will do something about OUR invasion of privacy.

However, I do take issue with a public official using a private email account to conduct state business. That is so wrong. Sarah needs to know, because she does not seem to understand, that she is doing the work for the public and should not be hiding her work for any reason from her employer, in that case the people of Alaska. She works for them.

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy ..."

Not so much fun to getting your email violated and read by an outside source, huh, Ms. Palin?

Although I have a sneaking suspicion that if your side wins the White House, you wont have too much trouble doing it to us, like the previous administration, and wont be considered such a "shocking invasion of privacy"

Yes, this would be an unlawful act. Maybe if the hackers are found they can refuse to work with the investigation. Maybe can refuse to answer any questions of the lead investigator and make sure they tell all of their cohorts to ignore any legal documents that say they should cooperate with the investigation. Do you really think they could get away with it?

No point in hacking her e-mail. What she is you can know from what she talks, like a second grade street magicians crowded by grown up kids.
You watched her answer the first question in townhall meeting about her foreign policy experience? the way she spinned ist to irrelevant something should make all repubs hang their heads in shame that they wasted thir time.

repubs really want to find some material in tgese two hopeless candidates and sadly are coming to conclusion that GOP made teir worst mistake.

all over world all know obama will win in a land slide, just a matter of few weeks. Palin will go to oblivion immidiately , john will take some time before retiring to bed.

all above needs no expert analysis but just pure common sense.

Why don't other people & companies get this kind of attention and investigation when their e-mails and websites get hacked?

  18. Republican Women for Obama

It's outrageous to think that Gov. Palin was using yahoo e-mail to circumvent the spirit of the law by avoiding freedom of information requests for public documents. Could sensitive information about pipelines have been put into the public domain where terrorists could get at it? This is all very troubling. In the interests of voters, the troopergate investigation needs to continue unimpeded by the McCain campaign.

I do wish the media would stop reporting this as a 'hack'. There's NOTHING hacker-like about taking a Yahoo ID. Most of the people who engage in this type of behavior have IQs well below average – it's simple smoke, mirrors and trickery, and has been going on since Yahoo's inception. It has NOTHING to do with hacking, at all.

Yes, its not fair that Palins emails were hacked and yes, it's an invasion of her privacy.
But just what was Sarah Palin doing conducting official business with Yahoo! email account?
How ignorant and stupid can you be?
Day after day, Palin continues to scare the heck out of me.
