From

(CNN) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is sending a letter to President Bush pressuring him to offer a "comprehensive and effective systemic response to ongoing market turmoil."

"We need to hear from you about a comprehensive and effective systemic response to ongoing market turmoil — one that will restore stability, grow our economy, create jobs, and insulate hardworking, middle-class Americans on Main Street from Wall Street’s crisis," Pelosi writes in the letter.

She also says Congress will be willing to stay on Capitol Hill beyond the target adjournment date of September 26 to deal with the problem.

Full letter after the jump

Dear Mr. President:

The worsening crisis in our financial markets demands strong solutions and decisive leadership.

Already, House and Senate committees are investigating both the regulatory lapses and market oversight failures that resulted in this crisis, as well as possible solutions. This work will continue.

Accordingly, we stand ready beyond the targeted adjournment date of September 26 to permit Congress to consider legislative proposals and conduct necessary investigations.

Going forward, we need to understand how government failed to prevent this financial crisis, and how we can avoid future mismanagement and denial.

Thus far, we have seen a reactive, case-by-case approach to a severe crisis - a crisis attributable in part to a history of indifference to responsible regulation of the financial markets. We need to hear from you about a comprehensive and effective systemic response to ongoing market turmoil — one that will restore stability, grow our economy, create jobs, and insulate hardworking, middle-class Americans on Main Street from Wall Street’s crisis.

The worsening economy demands another bipartisan economic recovery effort. This effort must address:
• investment in infrastructure for economic growth and job creation here at home,
• home heating assistance at a time of record energy costs,
• extended Unemployment Insurance for the growing number of Americans looking for work,
• Food Stamps that will help ensure we feed hungry families in a time of crisis, and
• assistance to maintain critical health care coverage jeopardized by state budget cuts.

We stand ready to work with you and your Administration to consider constructive solutions that stabilize our financial markets and balance accountability to the U.S. taxpayer with protecting American families from the crisis’s fallout.

Thank you for your willingness to work with us to address these issues which affect every American family.

Sincerely,

Nancy Pelosi

Florida is voting McCain/Palin. Pelosi and Reid will crap their pants when they get to Washinton. Ha Ha I can't wait.

Sylvia   September 18th, 2008 11:13 pm ET

CNN, why do you not allow comments on your stories especially the Palin stories? Where is the story where people walked out of the event while McCain was still talking? This news organization does not publish much of the news, mainly when it pertains to McLiar/Palin or is it Palin/McLair campaign and their gaffees. What is going on Candy, Wolf and Campbell, is your guy screwing up — McLiar.

McCain is showing signs of Alzheimers, why is no one picking up on this! These are not gaffs the man is ill, he is not mentally fit to be President. Someone close to him has to know it. This is a cover up.

Well, the middleman takes another big hit in the 40lK department. I think Bush and the boys have about drained all they can out of us.

Hey Joe Cool, by the time Democrats took over a very corrupt Republican house the damage to the economy was done. To say that the eight years that George Bush has spent in office is irrelavant to the economic crises ridiculous! This is his fault because for eight years he has been a president who has engaged in extreme fiscal irresponsibility and he allowed this to happen.

I find it be be just absolutely disgraceful and unbelievable that Sarah Palin and her husband will refuse to comply with a subpoena and that John McCain would endorse this behavior. Already, before they are even elected McCain and the Palins are engaging in illegal, unethical, sneaky behavior. For this VP candidate to hide behind the shirt tales of John McCain and to use this candidacy as a reason to engage in unethical and illegal behavior is outrageous. Since when is a political candidate above the law, much less the spouse of such? If this is how they behave now, imagine the shenanigans and illegal political maneuvering which would go on if they were elected. Disgraceful! And then there is the issue of unethical behavior in regards to her usage of email. Unbelievable!!

Winners, not Whiners   September 18th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

If the American people were like Oklahomans, you wouldn't be complaining. We save our money for hard times, we live below our means, we have a six month emergency fund, we buy a house with less than 25% of our income (instead of 40-45%), our housing market will always be strong, we have abundant natural gas and oil, we have strong christian values, we volunteer and tithe, a part of our health care is paid by tobacco and oil taxes, and we love our country. No excusses, just winners. Happy elections, we don't need the government to bail us out. Some people have to grow up and take the dipers off. That's why you have to perfectly good hands, that's why America gave you freedom, make it happen. Thanks.

If you want to fix government;
-tax life insurance with savings in it, loophole #1
-tax alcohol and cigarettes out the ying yang, kill an addiction
-eliminate retirement for congress paid by our Social Security budget
-invest in natural gas, wind and solar power
-don't bail any company out, american competition will take the business, "if your business sucks, it shouldn't be in business"

More government control of the market and buyouts of large companies is a VERY slippery slope. If you think times are hard now, imagine a United States with State Monopoly on goods, banks, firms, etc. In case you have a hard time imagining such a thing, check out China. We need to solve this problem, but we can not slip on the slope.

Typical from a woman who's platform for getting Speaker of the House was "I'll lame duck the president". Not what she will do, how she will stop a whole branch of government from working.

Useless pandering and blaming from a woman who leads the Do Nothing Congress with the lowest approval rating…EVER.

Good job Nancy, keep strengthening Republican resolve.

J.C.   September 18th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

An economy without manufacturing will be a dead economy with time.
We didn't call manufacturing the engine of any economy for nothing.
No matter how politicians spin this. Any resuscitation plan without reviving manufacturing won't last. Throwing another stimulus check at us is proven useless in reviving our economy.

James   September 18th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

This is simply political posturing by Nancy Pelosi. She knows the White House will respond to this and she is setting herself up to take credit for the response. She should instead investigate the Democrats who have driven Fannie and Freddie into the ground!

lori   September 18th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Either CNN allows mostly democratic comments to come thru OR the Obama campaign pays people to post.
There is NO way a few republicans post.

Jane   September 18th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

How are the Republicans going to reform one another and get change. They need to go into their stash of cash or talk to their trillionaire oil friends to bail the economy out. They definitely are not hurting, they are too busy making the poor poorer. Palin, Bush and McCain all are benefiting from the raising price of gas. We are helping them everytime we go to the gas pump. They are playing the game well. It was time for change 8 years ago.

Dear Mrs, Pelosi.
I have received your letter requesting my decision about the crashed economy. As much as I would love to reply to you, but, you see, right now I am so busy packing up my things. But, don't worry, you shall hear from me hopefully by the end of February 2009. Any way, how do you expect me to repair in 3 months time something that took me 8 years to demolish? I'm no magician.

Respectfully

So Bush should propose a solution to the problem that the Democratic Congress has failed to address in the last two years. He did propose one years ago but the Democrats wouldn't hear of it. Maybe Nancy should talk to her fellow Democrat Barney Frank who as the House Financial Services Chairman has fought against reform of Fannie MAE and Freddie MAC for years

FOCUS ON THE ECONOMY   September 18th, 2008 9:53 pm ET

What kind of letter is that?
How can anyone think that Bush and the Republicans can do anything positive about the economy? The economy wouldn't be where it is right now if the Republicans can do anything positive. Pelosi, do you want Bush to mess it more than he already did? Please withdraw your letter with all due respect.

McCain is even worse about the economy.

No Hillary = No Obama   September 18th, 2008 9:48 pm ET

Pelosi had her chance to get rid of Bush through impeachment proceedings and she "took it off the table". Instead she writes him letters, demanding something he doesn't have - competence. Then she turns her back on Hillary Clinton and promotes somebody who needs a teleprompter to sound competent. What a joke.

jimmy   September 18th, 2008 9:46 pm ET

it was Mccain who suggested a commission to study the economic
mess that our country is facing and which Obama criticized in front
of a rally crowd .. Well , now we are know John Mccain was right after all. IT NOW HAS HAPPENNED THAT NOT ONLY WAS "COMMISSION" FORMED ,BUT A LARGER GROUP OF FINANCIAL AND CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS GOT TOGETHER TO DISCUSS THE ECONOMIC PROBLEMS AND THEY ARE COMING UP WITH A PROPOSAL TO FIX THE ECONOMY.. MCCAIN GOT IT RIGHT ON THE BUTTON. OBAMA WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT HE AND HIS AIDES COULD COME UP WITH A SOLUTION TO OUR ECONOMY PROBLEMS

The best joke, though, is that Sarah Palin is a small time crook who reminds me so much of Spiro Agnew it's almost frightening. If even half of the case allegations against her are proven, she will go he way of Mr. Agnew. In addition to serial adultery, we have obstruction of justice, bribery, abuse of power, illegal wiretapping, and on and on and on. I am quite certain that, if the voters are so dumb as to elect McCain, that she will be forced to resign or will be impeached. Then, "Palin Power", then we get PRESIDENT PELOSI!!! ???

The Democrats are in charge of the financial commitees.

5 years ago, Bush tried to do something about Fannie/Freddie, which would've stabilized the mortgage industry, which would've lessened/prevented the pain from the financial storm we're in now.
Barney Frank and Chris Dodd were complacent and prevented action.

In 2006, McCain also called for reform, to a complacent do nothing congress.

Pelosi keeps dragging herself further down.

Scott Tucson   September 18th, 2008 8:49 pm ET

I believe she's the speaker of the house so why doesn't she take action like they did on the oil crisis??? Oh yeah! they went on vacation during that crisis.

So do we really want democrats running the House, Senate and one in the White House to boot? They can't run a city or State without driving it into the ground.

For a CHANGE, I like to see more of my money staying in my wallet than having the likes of Obama and the democrats taxing the hell out of us and giving it to some welfare mother whose too lazy to work but can pump out a baby every year. Change…thanks but we can't afford more socialism in this country.

Chris   September 18th, 2008 8:48 pm ET

NO! Don't let that man near our finances. The government needs to STAY OUT! Let the chips fall. We are in this mess BECAUSE of government.

Michael   September 18th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

This should be simple. Even for McBush. The Republicans ran us Trillions of Dollars in debt. For America to have any chance to survive. which appeared approximately 30 minutes AFTER this story is now closed for comments. It couldn't be message volume, as both of these stories have a similar number of messages.

Had I had the opportunity to post a message on that story I would have made the following comment;

I am no longer astounded by the moronic comments being posted by presumably intelligent people, and most particularly when it comes to make cruel fun of anyone who isn't Barak Obama. If it were not so pitiful it would be funny. But it's not funny.

I think you really have to take a long and reflective look at your candidate. It seems he wishes to inflict European Socialism on us, and you are buying into it.

So little tolerance. So much ignorance.

LIFE BEFORE THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER IN CONGRESS:

1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 yr. high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3) the unemployment rate was 4.5%;
4) the DOW JONES hit a record high–14,000 +
5) Americans were buying new cars, taking cruises, vacationing overseas, living large!…

LIFE AFTER THE DEMS TOOK OVER IN 2006:

1) Consumer confidence has plummeted;
2) Gasoline is now nearly $4 gallon and climbing;
3) Unemployment is up over 5%.
4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION & prices are still dropping;
5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure;
and
6) THE DOW is probing another low~~11,300–$2.5 TRILLION HAS EVAPORATED FROM THEIR STOCKS, BONDS & MUTUAL FUNDS INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS!

OBAMA/BIDEN = Please no more change, we can't afford it!

Nancy, why have you not taken any action? You have a lot in common with Obama, you both wrote books. Neither of you have done anything productive as represenatives. I hope every incumbent running, loses.

Pelosi and the entire do-nothing Democratic Congress can go pack sand where the sun doesn't shine.

You're like the female version of Obama…or more like he's the male version of you.

All talk and hot air and no action…won't don't both of you vote 'present' in harmony.

Nothing but finger pointers and blamers.

About time both the democrats and republicans actually did something after the Enron debacle, the dot.com bust, the housing/mortgage mess, and the speculators in the oil markets. Washington needs some reforms and it wouldn't hurt to have some regulations which set boundaries and limits to the greedy children in those areas!

Wow what a great, sincere thoughtful letter! I would hope that the speaker of the house could do better than write a letter that is obviously intended to be a press release masquerading as a letter to George Bush. Maybe she could involve herself in efforts to address the problems at hand instead of engaging in politics as usual. Of course that type of action would require real thought instead of blame George Bush sound bites. I can't believe CNN would post this as a news article.

If anyone I know loses their job during an Obama administration if he gets in, I will explore options towards getting him impeached and sued for fraud and misleading the public. How about that Obamabots? It's been proven over and over again that higher expenses and taxes results in downsizing. God help this country as we're more stupid than I know we are for putting him in office. I lost a few jobs when Clinton was in office, but not one during a Republican administration. Too late Nancy, I couldn't stand you when I lived in CA, and cannot stand you even more as you stand for everything that is wrong in this country.

I really don't have a clue what Nancy has been doing because I've been so focussed on the general election. But I'll tell you one thing, Congress needs to get their act together before Barack gets there or the people will revolt with their votes.

We're not going through this long drawn out process so our hopes and aspirations can be stopped by a do nothing Congress. We're just not. I live in Nancy Pelosi's district and have voted for her for years. I admit that in the past two years I have fired off several angry letters over the impeachment issue, and continued war funding. Recently I got a chance to hear her speak and I now understand her better. If the democrats had used their shaky one vote majority to try to impeach Bush, that's all this election would have been about. I can now appreciate the circumspection of her position given that we have a real chance to take our country back from the criminal mismanagement of the conservative right, but we could have lost that chance by giving them a reason to rally around George Bush in a time of war. Just look at what happened when McCain claimed sexism over the lipstick remark. We can no longer underestimate the power of the right wing to use any excuse to distract us from the truth. I think we all owe Nancy Pelosi an apology — she managed to keep her cool while we were losing ours. And trust me, she'd like nothing better than to see George Bush and his administration in jail where they belong.

Bush said he feels our pain. He also said he felt our pain in '04 when he supported US job loss due to free trade. He said that he would create programs to help folks who lost jobs over seas retool to new skills. IT NEVER HAPPENED!! Feel our pain - yeah right!

3 million+ jobs lost due to free trade so the rich can get richer, and the rest of us are stuck with tainted products from overseas, with no money to buy any of it. This helps America?? Look at us now.

There was no help from Bush, I know. Now he feels our pain again. Funny, McCain also feels our pain.

I'm sick of the pain these people have inflicted on the USA.

Obama. What do we have to lose?? We're already losing.

Obama is a thug from Chicago who learned from Mayor. He is a socialist that middle America will not vote for. I know two individuals that have been called and polled by the various groups. Each said, and they were Democrats that they told them one thing but had no intention of walking into that voting booth and vote for a junior senator with no experience, a background that is scary….( just look at his former pastor ) his wife is not proud of American. Please. 48% of American now pay no taxes….under Obama 54% will not pay. You do the math. Americans are not stupid…..he has not chance in Hell. McCain will win by at least 6%. Time to get things straight.

The democratic lead in Congress (58%) is not high enough to override a veto unless there is bi-partition cooperation.

The financial mess we're in belongs to both parties, but inaction is highly due to vetoes (9) or the threat of vetoes (>100) by the president.

Reaching out to find out what policies the president would not veto (or threaten to) is actually a smart move to get some action items through Congress. And here this is what I thought people wanted all along, but now you complain.

Oh, and let us not forget the 6 years that Republicans had majority in the House and Senate with a Republican president. It takes more then 2 years to fix every problem, especially with threats around every corner.

Walt, Belton,TX   September 18th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

All the hype for Obama and media prejudice of McCain sickens me, but it may not matter. Has anyone out there considered that Bush may try to stay in office past his term because we are at war? There is a presidential clause for that. People were worried Harry Truman might do that if WW 2 had not ended. GOD HELP US! I agree with impeaching Bush. Just to make sure he's gone!!!!

The Republicans posting here that the Democratic Congress is at fault are proof that our education system is failing to each people how our government works, which allows partisan rhetoric to manipulate and confuse the people and threatens the very foundation of our democracy: an educated and informed populace exercising the right to vote in an intelligent and practical manner.

We have a problem here. President George W. Bush and Senator John McCain and their adviser's know nothing about the 'economy'. How can someone fix a problem if they don't understand the problem ? Talk about.., "not" in touch with America. Remember when Senator John McCain said.., ("I don't understand "economics") ? That's probably why he and his wife Cindy can't remember how many homes they have. Folks.., it's 'pure greed' and we the american public are going to pay for it. The CEO's, President's, Senior Vice President's, CFO's, Top Management and Board of Directors are making all this 'money' and we are losing our shirt's. I belive that is called 'greed' and "down-right-fraud". There are many factors in the collapse of Wall Street and major companies. But, someone should be going to prison for this mess. Nancy and the Senate.., do something about this national and global mess. President Bush isn't going to do something about it.., he's to busy packing with Laura for their moving trip to Crawford, Texas. Mike in Montana

I think its hilarious that Republicans have been in control of the congress for 10 of the last 13 years and yet they and their blind sheep followers blame the LESS THAN TWO YEARS that the democrats have had a 51-49 majority in the Senate on all of the problems that have been mounting up for almost 10 years.

but that makes perfect sense to a party that made up a war in Iraq and that calls for tax cuts for the people and corporations that caused this mess:

"They're angry when they see that the CEO of Bear Sterns decides to jump in the market and make a little extra money off the shares that he has accumulated over the years, instead of just taking the how-many-millions that he was going to get anyway," - McCain

Kristen   September 18th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

I love how the GOP conveniently forgets that for 6 of the last 8 years, they have been in charge of both houses of congress, the executive branch, and the Supreme Court. THe Dems get a 1-person advantage in the Senate for two years (and that's only if you consider Lieberman a Dem, which he clearly isn't anymore) and now suddenly everything is their fault. Bush used no vetoes for the first 6 years and 39 the last 2–including progressive housing reform legislation and energy legislation. Why wouldn't she ask Bush what his stance is? There's no point for Congress to legislate unless they know whether Bush will just veto it and waste everyone's time. When the Hell is our President going to come out and address this crisis? Did he leave the job early or something? He is literally retarded–I'd be interested to know how he fares on an IQ test. Talk about sexim–harcore conservatives love to bash Pelosi, but everytime I confront one about their complaints and ask for specific reasons why they dislike her, they can't think of any. They hate her because she's a woman in a powerful position and that's that

Pelosi helped cause the current economic crisis and she's asking someone else to help her out?

Pelosi is asking President Bush for help fixing her mess.

When people star to realize it's not the government who should be involved in matters like this we'll make some progress. Some regulation is necessary too much will hurt our economy. Let's not make the situation worse. Most of Pelosi's recommendations will make the government bigger. That is the wrong way to go. I've never seen her put her country before her party before, so I'm skeptical that she is willing to do it now. I still hold a slimer of hope that the democrats will actually act in the best interest of our country, I hope they come through.

HEY PELOSI. YOU ARE THE PROBLEM!!! The economy was fine 2 years ago until the Dems took over Congress. It's Congress' job to have oversight. So where was the oversight? This Congress is a DO-Nothing disgrace. They should all be fired!

Former head of Freddie Mac on your VP search committee…… received second most $$$$ from Fannie and Freddie over a 20 year period . He as been in the Senate only four. Impressive for a junior senator. He could not decided yesterday about the AIG issue and Nancy and Harry want to go on vacation. Leadership………please. A monkey could do more than the three of Nobama, Nancy and Harry combined. McCain-Palin…….get use to it.

Nancy Pelosi is an absolute joke and needs to be gone. She is one of the main reasons we have had an absolute do nothing Congress over the last two years. Barney Franks is the Chairman of the Banking oversight committee why isn't he taking heat over this? Thank you liberal media. The Democrats have had the congressional majority for the last two years, and during the last two years or economy has tanked, unemployment has risen and I am worse off than I was before they came into congressional power. Congress has gone from a 40% approval rating to a 9% approval rating. No meaningful legislation has been enacted. When do we wake up and hold these people accountable. This tired old retoric about Bush vetoing is baloney. If the Democratic Congress were doing anything at all and Bush was Vetoing their efforts the News Media as well as Democrats in general would be all over it. It is all we would hear about from the media, this did not happen. This is the typical finger pointing attempts to take the heat of the Democrats and place it on the Republicans, not that they have done any better during the last eight years. How can Barack keep a straight face telling people he is only going to tax a specific group and not effect anyone else. This is income redistribution. How does he really think you grow jobs if we increase the taxes placed on business causing them to eliminate jobs to cut their cost. I do not know what world Obama, much less the rest of Congress is living in, but it must be sunny there. We have serious problems, illegal immigration, economy, taxes, sending our jobs overseas, and we need serious people dealing with them. We as Americans need to get rid of the current so called leaders. Pelosi and Barney Franks should be the very first to go, she is a total waste of skin and is a poor excuse of a leader. Finally, I would like to see potential candidates talk stricktly about the issues of which neither one has done even if you stretch the issue. I want to hear about possible solutions that are not going to put me at a greater disadvantage than I am now. Neither Obama or McCain seem to be able to do this. I am not interested in just hearing what is wrong and who is to blame for it, give me solutions. In my opinion both parties are eq
