AFL-CIO plans economy mailer on McCain's 'strong' remark

The AFL-CIO will send a two page mailer out Monday.
The AFL-CIO will send a two page mailer out Monday.

(CNN)—In the face of growing economic concerns, the AFL-CIO will being sending out a new mailer Monday taking direct aim at Sen. John McCain’s recent comment that the fundamentals of the U.S. economy are “strong.”

“John McCain says the economy is fundamentally strong,” the mailer reads. “John McCain is fundamentally wrong.”

McCain made the comments at a campaign event in Florida hours after Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy last Monday.

"You know, there's been tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall Street," McCain said in Jacksonville. “Our economy, I think, still, the fundamentals of our economy are strong, but these are very, very difficult times."

The Obama campaign has used the comment to attack the Republican nominee, calling him “disturbingly out of touch.”

The mailer, which the AFL-CIO calls their “broadest yet,” is set to reach more than one million union households in the swing states of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

The mailer will coincide with an e-mail reaching 500,000 people, phone calls and door to door visits from volunteers.

  4. No impressed in

I am not impressed with the Palin/McCain ticket, excuse me McCain Palin ticket. I get a little confused. I'm tired of hearing of Palin having "executive experience". Those who keep harping on this need to think of the last 8 years of having a president who was a governor with so called "executive experience". That's real scary!

McCain hasn't a clue on how to tackle this failing economy.

  5. Support the fight to free America

TELL PEOPLE TO WORK HARD AND RUN FAST SO THAT THE CONFUSED TWINS WONT GET TO THE WHITE HOUSE

McCain yesterday called spain and country rulled by dictator when he meant Mexico. Last march he said Somalia when he meant Sudan. Palin refuse to abide by the same law she swore to protect and obey. Palin gave her best idea so far yesterday saying she will bring transparency to washington ..guess what Obama did that two yrs ago( even though GOP claimed he has no acheivements)
Everyone is beggining to see that this people dont have brains of their own to think.

McCain is getting hit from all sides. His advisors are not doing their job of helping a man who is not up to the task. Feeding him lies does not cut it.

Can we get physicians or psychiatrists to evaluate McCain and tell us if this man is aging in a normal way or if the is in the first stages of dementia?

I don't trust McCain. AT ALL.

“John McCain says the economy is fundamentally strong,” the mailer reads.

Whoever wrote the mailer must have forgot that syntax is everything. What McCain actually said was that the "fundamentals of our economy are still strong." There is a huge difference. He did not say the ECONOMY IS FUNDAMENTALLY STRONG. If you want to attack his choice of words that's fine but at least get your quotes straight! Unions are obsolete anyways...

The McCain campaign continues to spread lie after lie. Instead of seriously weighing in about the financial crisis he spreads lies about Obama being linked to Freddie's Lobbists. Fact check it for yourself. Don't be fooled again by these same old, crooked, lier Republicans!

I would like to see more tv spots that call McCain and Oalin out on the flat out lies that they have been spewing across the nation. I need to see this because I don't see the media doing it. So, go get'em AFL-CIO!!!

The old tag line: OBAMA'08 DEMOCRATS'08 AND FOREVER.
The new tag line: VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS or VOTE FOR OBAMA...

  13. now is the time for PEOPLE to ACT!

    the workers create wealth,

and the paper-shuffling "high financiers" on wall street are parasites on the workers.

washington is owned and run by these loan-sharking, public-defrauding, war-profiteering neo-cons.

NO ONE in power WORKS FOR THE WORKERS!

    WANT TO SOCIALIZE CORPORATE DEBTS?

    SOCIALIZE CORPORATES THEMSELVES FIRST!

OTHERWISE, throw all the thieves out of washington into prison of hard labor!

WE THE PEOPLE HAVE THE ULTIMATE POWER!

  14. Unions are Corrupt

The AFL-CIO is what's wrong with america's workforce today and why jobs are being shipped overseas.

Unions only benefit the lazy worker and the union bosses. The hard working laborers carry the entire load and get nothing for it.

Unions have proven to be corrupt, are corrupt and will continue to be corrupt. So why I ask would you take their advice on choosing the president?

  15. McCain Invented the BlackBerry, Palin Invented the Manure Spreader

But he doesn't need to know much about the economy or be qualified to run a corporation.

He can just invent another BlackBerry!

It is still mind-boggling how many people in America are so eager to drin the Kool-Aid.

Anyone with an ounce of intelligence can see that McCain is Desperate.

John McCain used to be an honorable man, a moral man, and a role model. Now he is little more than a sad, bitter, self-absorbed, angry old man with old ideas. He will lie and cheat to win at any cost.

How pathetic to think that he would sellout, compromise his conscience and his humaness all to win an election.

    A very, very sad man.

What's most wrong about McCain/Palin is that their campaign is fundamentally racist. Ever wonder why he's all the sudden saying all the same things as Obama has been saying all along? That's because the cornerstone of McCain's new campaign strategy is the Bradley Effect. He wants everyone out there who is on the fence and might not really want to vote for a black guy to know that "hey, I'm John McCain, and I'll do everything that black dude is saying he'll do for you, but you won't have to vote for a black dude to get it!" Too bad they seem to have forgotten about Harold Ford.

It's disgusting. The LAST thing this country needs is a return to the 50's.

    Lets see,
Why is Michigan in such a state of chaos economically, could it possible be they are so unionized they've forced companies out?
Unions were once good for this country but not any more. I would say the AFL-CIO are partially to blame. Just glad I didn't get sucked in.....

This won't bother McCain much. He doesn't know what the AFL-CIO is about. What does it have to do with the Economy...Jobs, what Jobs? Who worries about Jobs? He's still trying to figure out what Jobs have to do with Economy.

The fundamentals of our economy are strong. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just a whiner... or unpatriotic... or sexist... or hates America!

This remark from Sen. McCain is unbelievable.
The statements and Smear adds he has been making over the media shows that he is sufferering from "Senile dementia" and his mind is unbalanced.
The "afl-cio" sending out these mailings is best thing they could do.
This mailing will remind these 500,000 people who receive it that his thought processes are not rational and he would not make a good president.
