Obama-Biden surrogate mocks Palin

A supporter of Obama-Biden got tough on Palin Thursday.
A supporter of Obama-Biden got tough on Palin Thursday.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (CNN) – An Ohio mayor who introduced Joe Biden at a rally Thursday night said Sarah Palin’s hometown of Wasilla, Alaska was “not the real world.”

“One of the things that bothers me is the fact that Governor Palin talks about she's ready to be the Vice President because she's been a mayor.” said Jay Williams, the Democratic-turned-independent mayor of Youngstown. “I’ve never been to Wasilla, but I’m sure it’s a nice little town, In fact it’s so little we could invite them all to sit down in [Youngstown’s] Chevrolet Centre and probably still have room left over.”

“I would love to be the mayor of Wasilla,” he continued. “I could probably do it from my home and not show up to work too often because in Wasilla, they don’t have a crime problem. There were two homicides in Wasilla in the last 13 years.”

Williams added that the average Wasilla income and price for a home are above the national average.

“The education, they have small student/teacher ratios,” said Williams. “That’s not the world that we live in ladies and gentlemen, you all know that here in the real world, we have to deal with issues of crime, and poverty, and education. That’s what happens.”

Before Williams moved on to why he is a fan of Biden’s, he took one last swipe at the notion that Palin claims foreign policy experience because Alaska’s proximity to Russia, an argument offered up by McCain.

“That would be the equivalent of me wanting to do your heart surgery because I live next door to a doctor,” said Williams. “It just doesn't add up. Being mayor is a very good preparation for a lot of things, even potentially being vice president. But only if you're the mayor and have to deal with real world issues.”

Barack Obama and Joe Biden have both refrained from saying much, if anything, about Sarah Palin on the stump - their go-to line is they don’t know enough about her to differentiate her from John McCain.

But some of the surrogates introducing them at rallies have been less restrained; earlier this week, a Michigan supporter introducing Biden at an event called Palin a “bucket of fluff.”

  1. The Real World?

Our cities and schools have been run by Democrats for generations – and they're failing! What a shock! The most properous regions in the country are in the south, and are run by Republicans. Do the math. The Dems talk about how bad no child left behind is, but usually fail to mention that it was written by 2 democrats Ted Kennedy and George Miller – George Bush gave 'em what they wanted – that really teed 'em off didn't it?

Is it really mocking when you're telling the truth?

If this were a business interview and Palin brought these pathetic arguments of why she is the right person for the job, she would be escorted out of the building.

Palin is full of hot air and will soon deflate. I think that she should be ignored because she is out of her league and should not be given the time of day from Senators Obama & Biden. Other democrates & honest republicans should continue to tell the public the truth about her.

  4. Consider

So, let me understand this logic. She was mayor of a successful town with low crime and healthy economy instead of somewhere like, let's say Chicago, where their were more killings with guns this summer than our men and women in Iraq. That actually makes her less qualified... mayor of a successful town.

Now, that is the way surrogates are supposed to address issues around experience. Carly Fiorina should take notes.

bidens big mouth and sexist comments about gov. palin are reminders of the sexist dnc and obama camp, and how they treated hillary. obama went with the blabber mouth MAN who got a few thousand votes in the primaries, over the WOMAN who got over 18 million. bad judgement and ego will cost the democrats this election.

Not a good idea to make fun of Wasilla OR Alaska. These surrogates need to think before they speak. Or maybe just speak BETTER. Not helping the cause.

We already know that Palin has nothing to offer. We watched that sad ABC and even sader Fox interview.
But tell us more about Biden. Remind us again why Biden was such a great pick for Obama; and how he may be the most qualified of all the candidates.
Can somebody please find out why Biden makes McCain is so uncomfortable. I know there is something there, but I can’t put my finger on it.

This is hilarious...now they refuse to refer to Palin as Governor. Instead they continually harp on her past mayorship of a small town.

Truth be told...any mayor of ANY town in the US has a stronger resume than Obama. He may be a senator, but he's done zero legislation other than giving honorific titles and resolutions like the rest of this 'do nothing' dem congress.

The fact still remains that she has more viable experience in running a government than the lead man on the dem ticket and it's eating them to death inside.

But being the Mayor of Youngstown, now that's impressive! What a tool. Probably s himself if he ever met Palin face to face.

I am sure she in nice and all, but they have run a horriable campagin and it shows.

Raymond Duke; please get a life. No one listens to your GOP driven rants, but they are quite funny, so please contuine!!!!!!

  16. Huh?

Why is it that every ticker item on Obama/Biden ends up ending with thier argument, but every McCain/Palin item has to end up with a CNN note and/or "UPDATE" with a Obama/Biden reponse/rebuttal.

    CNN... your bias is showing...

Palin only merits derision from Biden's surrogates. Biden's time and opinion are too important to waste talking about her.

Funny, but a lil mean. I am no Palin fan but why take a shot at Alaska. When Dems say these smug things they sound a lot like... ...ummmmmm, what's the word I am looking for? Oh yeah, they sound like republicans.

You know he is right on this.

But it is the world that all sane people strive for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Other than that, the man is a political hack.

I read that when Palin / McCain campaign together that the crowds cheer Palin, but leave when McCain arrives – is this true? Do you think McCain still wants to be VP?

Thanks Joe for informing the voters of this country of the facts and showing exactly what the McCain/Palin supporters will get if they vote Republican. The Old Codger and the kindergarten pupil. They are very mistaken if they think the American people are so stupid as to vote for this slap stick team. Sarah, go home and take care of you family who obviously is lacking in support. McCain, just retire and let your barbie wife take care of you.

CNN – can you please try a little harder? We really don't need another story about how a sort-of surrogate for one campaign said something slightly controversial about the other campaign. We really could use more stories on the actual issues of this campaign. I do like that you've added some Fact Checks (although those are not very indepth, at least they cover some issues). Please focus way more on the candidate's positions on issues, and way less about these tangential surrogate-says stories. Thanks!
