Mikulski is a supporter of Barack Okbama.

STERLING, Virginia (CNN) – Firing up supporters at a women’s rally with Joe Biden in Virginia Friday, Sen. Barbara Mikulski told the crowd, “Democratic women, we wear lipstick too!” referring to Sarah Palin’s now-famous joke that the difference between a pitbull and a hockey mom is lipstick.

“You and I know that we women in America are mad as hell and we don’t want to take it anymore,” the spirited Maryland senator said. “I’m here today to say to you, we’ve got to get ready here, ok? Women, square your shoulders. Women, Democratic women, we wear lipstick too!”

“We don’t need another George Bush in earrings being the No. 2 spot,” Mikulski added.

Taking the stage, Biden thanked Mikulski, saying “They asked me could I handle Sarah Palin? I said, 'try debating Barbara Mikulski!'”

The Delaware senator focused his remarks on women's issues, saying that demographic is the most affected in an economic downturn.

“We're going to change that because here's the deal, we've got to restore both the protections and the dignity,” said Biden, “Because when the economy goes south, it's women who go, whether they're making minimum wage or working for a major corporation.”

Biden also said that on a conference call with Barack Obama and their economic advisors that morning, billionaire investor Warren Buffet told the group, “the last hundred days of the Bush administration are like the first 100 days of the FDR administration,” referring to the Great Depression.

Biden argued that the Federal Reserve and the Treasury need to be given emergency authority so people can stay in their homes and keep their savings. He added that part of the solution is ending “the cowboy mentality of the Bush and McCain era,” saying “they have worshipped at the shrine of deregulation.”

John McCain used "Lipstick on a Pig" when speaking about HILLARY CLINTON's stance.

So there's no leg to stand on when calling Obama sexist. Let it go, the neocon supporters are finished on that issue.

This November, women who care about equal pay, women who care about having the right to choose, women who care about access to reproductive healthcare (namely, birth control), women who care about justice against violent offenders, in two words: intelligent women (!!) will be voting for Barack Obama!

If Ohio voters are going to vote for McCain over Obama over what Biden said about the OSU football team, then God help us. We will deserve the government that we get.

Ohio voters grow a little thicker skin. Biden was just having fun with his football team (Delaware). I listen to lots of football talk on the radio and TV (ESPN) and what they are saying about OSU is a lot worse than what Biden said.

Charlotte, don't be too sure. With two trigger happy people in the White House (no, three, I forgot the shadow VP Todd) we could be bombing and fighting our way to WWIII before Valentine's Day. This country is almost bankrupt, and not just financially, but morally. To even consider placing Sarah Palin, who has not given one speech without multiple lies, who cannot answer a question in a forthright manner, was known in Alaska for firing people who disagreed with her, placed her high school friends in jobs they weren't qualified for….and there is more. The woman is not Commander-IN-Chief material, and would be even worse than Bush should she be given access to the "nucular" (sic)nuclear, Sarah! button.

Darrel from Denver   September 19th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

Insanity   September 19th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

Charlotte, I have to disagree with you saying that McCain is not a replica of George Bush. We have to pray that he isn't a third term bush? Get honest with yourself, the facts, the polices shows that he is. Voting for McCain is insanity (doing the same thing over and over again…voting for bush 1st time 2nd time and 3rd time McCain…and expecting (praying?) different results. It seems to me that it isn't polices that confuse you it's color. All of this "women for palin" stuff has died down and the real WOMEN are coming out in droves for O'Bama. Just face it, most women see McCain as another 4 years of Bush and voting for O'Bama is the correct thing to do.

carol   September 19th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

That's what we need to show John McCain his sad plan to "win" over all the women's votes will not work……not all women are "air heads"
John McCain may have picked Sarah Palin…..soley because she was a woman, but her lack of knowledge on the issues facing this country have never been challenged!!!!!
When will she ever sit down with an interviewer (not fox& friends) who will ask her really tough questions and make her stick with the question and not be allowed to straight away talk about Senator Obama without giving a viable answer!!!!

Real Dem   September 19th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

Why is it that now we have people agreeing that McCain is not suitable to run the country but still decide to vote for the 3rd party candidate when they know the 3rd party candidate (or independent )will lose, thus letting someone else decide who becomes president.
I consider that to be throwing away your vote. If you had the nerve to vote for bush and now see that McCain won't do the job then why not O'Bama? It isn't because his polices are the same they are very different and we all know this. It isn't because of resko and how he used the law (which is legal) to get promoted in Illinois it's because he is african american. Seeing what the WSJ said today should re-enforce that we need change in America and it's not in Palin/McCain or McCain/Palin. (LOL) It's in O'Bama/Biden.

Charlotte   September 19th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

If nothing else, the democrats are sure worried about Sarah Palin. I've never seen an election where the VP was the hottest person on either ticket. She reminds me of that line in, TORA TORA TORA, a SLEEPING GIANT, just what the Republicans needed to get people excited about their party. This should have been a landslide for the Democrats, but alas they blew it again, with a unqualified person to be at the top of the ticket. We must somehow get throught the next 4 years, and pray John McCain is not a Bush third term. I do not believe he will be a Bush third term. I don't believe anyone could dummy down to Bush.

Birds of a Feather Flock Together! LOL

Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski has always played around with the dirty side of machine politics, and has been tempted by the darkest aspects of the Republican agenda. Mikulski's support of George W. Bush's FISA Amendments Act is the straw that breaks the camel's back. The last thing we need is Democrats in the United States Senate supporting Republican plans to spy against the American people.

listen up, you seriously are calling McCain a flip flopper while supporting Obama, that is laugh out loud funny. Obama has changed positions on every issue out there. FISA, pubic financing, faith based initiatives, gun control, the surge, late term abortion, drilling, the man has no principles, you are a typical Obama supporter, big on talk, short on actual knowledge of the facts.

Walt, Belton,TX   September 19th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Only differencer is that Palin is a lady and Mikulski is a ah, ah, isn't.

RM   September 19th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Another Riddle?

McCain says he will keep your taxes low, ensure you have jobs, and remind you that Obama is indirectly at fault for Fannie May (and by extension the crisis we are now facing) because he profited from it, but his only remedy for the problem is to create a new agency.

McCain wants to create another super agency (reminiscent of Home Land Security?) to oversee Wall Street and hold people accountable for their actions on Wall Street. How does this accomplish any market stability in the short run? Since this is a long-run strategy, what are the specifics?

Palin states that Obama wants to grow government. McCain says he is against regulation. Now they want to grow the government bureaucracy, and increase regulations. Good thing it is the weekend, maybe next week they can come up with a coherent platform.

Both Obama and McCain have weaknesses, but it is clear the McCain-Palin ticket will lead America on a whimsical and painful path to nowhere.

It seems like you only like Pailn who has no subsance and wont talk to even of you. So why keep waisting your time. Hillary where the hell are you? Your disappointing me, your showing yourself to be selfish. If the Democrats want the white house back, its high time to kick it up a notch. All the women in politics need to get off there buts and start speaking out.

Jim in San Jose   September 19th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Go Barbara. I love the Bush in earrings comment. The electoral map changed this week towards McCain, but next week it will swing hard towards Obama. The economic crisis has yet to hit home, but it will in 4 to 6 weeks when the fallout from Wall Street, causes trenches in Main Street. It's not over yet, not by a long shot.

Shannon   September 19th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

I can say this will be the first time in 30 years I will be voting for a Republican. I'm ashamed to say that the candidate that the DNC picked seems to hold women in complete disdain. Why Obama needs to demean women and tell lies about his opponents record is a mystery to me. McCain did not vote against equal pay for women, he didn't vote. Obama should know all about not showing up to vote. I tell my daughter how true Democrats behave toward women, and explain to her how Obama will be a huge step backward for women. Go to senate.gov to see how he votes, he is no friend to women!

Angela   September 19th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Patrick, Fairfield, CA   September 19th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

Sen. Mikulski appears to be quite the fire-starter with lipstick! Obviously she's not a fan of Gov. Palin and not fooled by her style. An article on the ticker yesterday stated Joe Biden seem to always have trouble attracting media attention - somewhat suggesting that the VP candidate has no flare or style. Well, that much can be inferred. But Joe has substance. And Big Daddy Biden will show that substance when he wipes the floor with Palin during their debate on October 2nd!

Silence Dogood   September 19th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

Now just imagine if McCain or anyone not-Obama making a comment about lipstick on a pig after this. There would condemnation across the board - news media, talking heads, Obama fans claiming sexism, rending their garments, and naming every evil thing leading up to the end of civilization.

But when Obama did it: What's wrong with calling a woman a pig?

I like Sen. Mikulski's firey spirit and energy - I'm of Polish-American heritage too. Putting aside the lipstick humor, it's clear this election has reached a tipping point. Most Americans will say "no third term" to the Bush/Cheney/McCain/Palin and Phil Gramm policies that have brought ruin at home and abroad! A $1 trillion war and a $1 trillion economic bailout. It's that simple, folks.

I'm running out of reasons why anyone who vote for McCain, Iwpn't mention the "elephant". Unless it's:

1. Obsession with his POW story, want to hear it again and again.

2. Thinks he's hot, can't wait to hear him do the state of the union.

3. Likes the uncertainty of his memory, he's so unpredictable.

4.Keep hearing about that explosive temper and would like to see it in action—given 4 years at the white house something is bound to set him off.

5.Palin's voice is like nails on a chalkboard, love that sound!

6. Can make a killing in vegas betting which way he'll flip or flop.

7. Money is no object, throw it all away.

Somebody help me please, I'm sure I forgot something.

Too bad it didn't garner the same headlines as the sports comment, but I guess that kind of reporting brings up your ratings CNN. I'm glad I won't be at home tonight to watch your political team play up the football comment and completely ignore this speech and its message.

C W   September 19th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

One of the big reasons McCain picked Palin is because he was told to by his advisors, among them Karl Rove. The plan? Another empty vessel in the White House, a puppet who will unthinkingly do whatever the real power wants, to benefit their select group at the expense of the American people.

McCain has sold his soul; Palin is a dip like Bush. Both are empty, both will do what they're told.

We don't need another eight years of this nonsense.
