Rangel is facing criticism over calling Sarah Palin 'disabled.'

(CNN) - Rep. Charlie Rangel, the longtime House Democrat already mired in possible ethics violations, is facing a new round of fire Saturday after describing Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin as "disabled."

Interviewed by New York television station WCBS Friday evening, the powerful New York congressman was asked why Democrats appear "afraid" of Palin.

"You got to be kind to the disabled," Rangel, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, responded in an answer the reporter interviewing him later called "astonishing."

Rangel later repeated the comment, adding, "There's no question about it - Politically it's a nightmare to think that a person's foreign policy is based on their ability to look at Russia from where they live."

Republicans, who have already been highly critical of Rangel over his failure to report taxes on income from his Dominican Republic beach house, are seizing on the comments.

"As if achieving new ethical lows was not sufficient, now Rangel is hitting a rhetorical low. Insulting the next vice president will not distract from Rangel's tax scandals," Republican National Committee Spokesman Alex Conant said.

Rangel reported paying $10,800 in back taxes Friday, according to the Associated Press, and complained that Republicans were waging a "guerrilla war" against him.

Shortly after the interview aired Friday night, Rangel issued a statement say his words were "misinterpreted."

"Sometimes in the heat of a political campaign you choose words that can be misinterpreted," he said. "Governor Palin is an obviously healthy person who in no way fits the description of disabled. I meant to say then, and I am saying now, that she entered the campaign with a disadvantage in the area of foreign policy."

Rangel was a supporter of Hillary Clinton's White House bid, but endorsed Obama immediately after the last round of primary contests in June.

THAT COMMENT BY CONGRESSMAN RANGEL REFFERING TO GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN " DISABLED" IS THE LOWEST ANY PERSON CAN GET.

I'm for the McCain/Palin ticket, but it just sounds as if this guy made a simple mistake.

He's got enough problems.

I know that none of the Chilren of the Corn would ever be anything like fair or objective, but it doesn't mean that I have to behave like a fool, just because they do.

Put "Lipstick on a pig and it's still a pig" – Barack is right on this one – Put lipstick on Palin's Alaska Pork and it's still Palin's Alaska Pork – Color does play in this election whether anyone will admit it or not – and yes Barack is the first Black to win a nomination and the reason he has my vote is I know if there's ever been a President that wants this country going in the right direction it will be a Black, because they can't afford for this country to do otherwise. If the country doesn't do better after he's in office outcries will be heard on Mars. McCain doesn't need to make the country better, he's a White guy. Barack doesn't have a choice – he has to do good. I was a Republican but McCan't and Miss Piggy Lips have pushed me to the other side – thank God they showed me the light. I'm 65 and WHITE.

Obama is ahead in the Polls. Do you actually believe in Polls? There is a factor that is not discussed much that makes the Poll results unreliable. On Nov 4th you will see what I mean.

As for Rangel he is an idiot as well as a tax dodger.

Maybe Sarah-come-lately should turn her attention to Pakistan for a quick second. It will add to the razor thin resume that she met a world leader, but we are now looking at a nation that is on the brink of anarchy, has nuclear weapons and a president with questionable mental stability. I think Pakistan needs to be on her to-do list ASAP....Oops Biden beat you to it.....

Change is coming   September 20th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Just keep it up, Democrats. The party of Bill Clinton is circling the drain, fast. Cheap shots and insults will only energize the Republican base and draw more independents to McCain. Palin, though not an Ivy League graduate, has more executive experience than The Chosen One and will carry the GOP to victory.

How can mccain/palin reform washington when she can't even reform alaska and is not participating in the investigation? Could one of you mccain/palin supporters explain that to me and don't say it is a dem plot or Obama, blah, blah because the investigation was started before she became the nominee and before people knew who the heck she was.

paulman   September 20th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

What a foolish comment by Rep. Rangel. He obviously doesn't get that his comment was wrong because it was disrespecful to people with mental and physical disabilities, NOT mainly because it implied Sarah Palin was disabled. To say it again, it is wrong to use a disability as a way to try to insult someone.

It's like trying to insult someone by saying, "hah, you're Chinese!", and then later apologizing and saying, "I apologize – I know you're not Chinese."

P.S. I am Chinese

P.P.S. I don't think this guy's comments should be used against Obama

Pattybilger   September 20th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

The Fake outrage of the Rep's is just a little overboard. We all know the Gov Palin isn't the brighest and that is what this Dem is talking about.

Big Al   September 20th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Why would Rangel even want to bring up foreign policy experience, considering Barack ZerObama has NONE. :

If he finds the idea that a potential vice president lacks the ability, what does it say about the Democrats when they put a socialist community organizer on the TOP of their ticket?

SILLY-JUST SILLY.

Rangel is the crook, not Palin, and the average American voter knows this.

Lisa   September 20th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

She's not disabled...she is just completely incompetent to be VP and it shows when she speaks. He used a very poor choice of words. He should have said incompetent. He insulted disabled people by comparing them to sarah palin. I have heard that Sarah cut funds for disabled people in Alaska so she is no friend of the disabled.

Marie in California   September 20th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

No surprise there about what Rangel said. Recent reports of illegal practices by Rangel have shown that he is truly an unsavory character anyhow. His comments about Palin are no exception.

As for inexperience across the board.....let's start with Obama....and he has the audacity to be running for president. If McCain wins, at least Palin would have the "apprenticeship" opportunity of a vice-presidency to learn the ropes. Obama would be jumping in with nothing but his birthday suit.

McCain-Palin – 2008

Arkansan 4 Obama   September 20th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

This is really stupid! They want to bring up that Rangel is under investigation, but so is Palin. At least he is cooperating. Why isn't she? Of course the GOP would attempt to blame this on Obama. That's what they are good at. Rangel is not running for President or VP. So who cares what he says? I definately don't! If Palin did not have a child that was disabled would this be an issue? I really think not! It was one word and if you look it up in the dictionary it could be used to describe Palin and her politics.

Stick to the issues!!!!!!!

Michael   September 20th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Rangel is a rotten corrupted arrogant blow hard. He needs to go and he needs to go now. I can't stand Palin but Rangel's comments are way out of line. I don't know if he has a Republican challenge this November, but if he does, he/she has my full support. I doubt the people of Rangel's district will wake up in time to stop this moron though.

John   September 20th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

I think what Rangel said was right, Palin is disabled, her disability is the disability to see sense, she says the surge is working, it almost doubled the causalities, she says Bush's economic policies are good ideas, can you spell Lehman Brothers?

It's like McCain put a bunch of names in a hat and reached in and pulled out the first one he touched.

Rangel is a crook whose ethical faults go well beyond failing to pay taxes.

I, for one, am so disgusted with the incessant democratic attacks on Sarah Palin–not least of all from the pro-Obama media–that I've moved to her camp nothwithstanding disagreements on several social issues.

camie   September 20th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Seriously, who came up with the idea that the democrats are affraid of Sarah Palin. Are you kidding me? who is stupid enough to think of something like that. the democrats are not affraid of Palin they just don't care because the problem of the country is not Palin and talking about her is not going to fix the issues. why waste the time of talking about her. Nobody heard of her before and all the sudden people should be affraid of her because she is that good. I think the republicans are loosing their minds now they are looking for any little comments to cry about. This country is dying and we really needs to talk about who is going to save it . I'm sick and tired of people attacking each other when the real issues are not the focus here. I think people need to get back to the issues not Sarah because I could care less about anything she has to say. she is not the solution to our problems.

Comment   September 20th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

CNN, why does Sarah Palin keep referring to McCain's and her administration as Palin/McCain's administration, I thought the presidential nominee came first. Is this some type of campaign strategy?

Here's the real problem people: you have an old white man and an old black man, and when you get to be their ages, you tend to use an incorrect word or two, have "senior" moments, and sometimes stare like a deer in headlights when faced with something new. I don't see where there's a story here, unless you want to pick on the elderly.

alex badme, albuquerque   September 20th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

OBAMA

Ron Bennett Surprise AZ   September 20th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

I would go one step further by claiming the whole Republican Party disabled themselves by their actions over the past 8 years.

George Bush II gave 500 billion dollars a year tax break to the rich when he got into office and now is giving them another 1.5 trillion more of the tax payer’s money to try to fix his past mistakes.

I told friends when Bush got elected that he almost bankrupted his fathers three business while his father was president now he is going to bankrupt our country. I hate the idea of being right because the future of civilization may be at stake.

“Those who fail to remember the past are doomed to relive it.” It is the Republicans who historically lead us into a great depression through their “over-exuberance.” The only thing Bush got going for him now is he has some smart people in key post that do remember the great depression such as Paulson, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke who is finally trying to fix the “over-exuberance” of the past, it may be too late.

We have tens of thousands of nuclear bombs now; we didn't have one before the first great depression. What scares me the most is my latest thought, if another great depression happens around the world this time around it could be followed by WW III a war that will finally end all wars and most of the worlds human life forms.

In other words, we could finally cause ourselves to become extinct.

Look at all you pathetic democrats shooting your mouth off trying to take down Gov. Palin. You can't accept the fact that the WOMAN is qualified to be the next Vice President of the United States. I have never seen such jealousy before in my life. Democrats you had your chance with Hiliary but your "Chosen One" decided to pick Joe Biden. Your negativity and the trashing of Hillary Clinton might have worked to secure Obama as the Democratic candidate but it won't work when the American people get to pick in the general election. It's funny how the liberals are supposed to be in support of women but you have to follow their rules and they only apply if your a democrat and then a woman. Way to set us back a few years with women's rights DEMOCRATS. I AM A WOMAN AND A PROUD REPUBLICAN. I thank God every day for Gov. The disabled insult only shows part of his ignorance. He should have credited SNL with the “I can see Russia” comment. What a doofus. I think this dirt bag is mentally disabled. He makes the tax laws then expects us to believe he doesn’t understand them.

SeattleVoter   September 20th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Yes, he did not properly choose his words wisely; however, this does not in any way hide the fact that Palin's claim to her experience to be VP is as follows...

- She can see Russia from her home which qualifies her for foreign relations.
- She has pumped gas into her own car and can turn on a light switch which qualifies her as an energy expert.
- She has managed her personal checkbook which qualifies her for managing worlld economics.
- She knows how to use a rifle with pinpoint accuracy so she is qualified to run the military.
- She has driven a car so she knows about transporation.
- Her high school friend sites her love of cows as a child which qualifies her to run the agricultural department in Alaska.
- She's had a job so she is qualified to fix the unemployment problems facing so many Americans.

Sarah Palin is not qualified.. period! Perhaps Hagel should have simply said, "Govenor Palin is a puppet." He would have spoken the truth and the republicans couldn't have said a thing to negate the comment.

JoNell   September 20th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

I think there are enough problems for the politicians to discuss without this stupid, childish bickering especially the republicans. The because I can see Russia so therefore I have international experience is really dumb along with all the other lies they are telling. She must have taken lessons from Cheney about how to be vice president.

I don't like Charlie Rangel for lots of reasons, but this CRITICISM IS JUST PLAIN SILLY AND SMALL-MINDED. Any fair-minded person would understand his remarks in context – a mean spirited partisan or a racist would choose to ignore the obvious intent conveyed by the tenor of his remarks.

What strikes me is that he paid up the tax levied – even though it relates to dealings in another country. Do AMericans pay tax in the Dominican Republic or is there no reciprocity in international affairs involving the US? GUESS NOT – USA RENEGED ON FREE TRADE AGREEMENT AND WOULD NOT HONOUR WTA DECISIONS AGAINST USA which favoured CANADA.

I remember US asking why people throughout the world hate the USA? Good Question? Do Americans know the answer to their own question?

If Rangel and other Americans pay tax on foreign income, why is the US National Debt so immense ... and growing so quickly? Anybody read "THE THREE TRILION DOLLAR WAR" about the war in Iraq to neutralize the non-existent WMDs? Why the continuing focus on Iraq, rather than the real battle in Afghanistan!

Anne   September 20th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

With all the illegal, unethical and criminal charges flying at Rangel, he should just keep his mouth shut. Before it is over Rangel you will bring race to center stage in this campaign. Geraldine Ferraro's statements are being more pertinent each and every day with the likes of Rangel. If only Hilliary was the nominee.

Sarah   September 20th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Rangel and what he said is the evidence that the corrupt in Washington are getting scared about what Palin has to say about reform. She's a threat. Whereas Obama and his "change" isn't quite so frightening. It's welcomed.
Palin should be thrilled that she's got the corrupt trembling.

James   September 20th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Why doesn't CNN tell the whole Charlie Rangel story? If you're going to smear him, you should balance it out by telling what an American hero he is. Unlike McCain, he is a real hero, one who doesn't talk and BS about it all the time.

However, after reading about Palin's Alaska comment, I've decided that I'm going to vote for Obama. I'd rather have his experience in the office rather than Palin's idiocy.

I don't necessarily agree with calling her disabled, but they need to attack more-if she is worthy and could be (heaven forbid) President of the United States she will have to handle this sort of criticism in the future...so what's the difference now?

christopher   September 20th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

OK, OK.... Rangel should have been politically correct and called her intellecutally chanllenged. Palin makes Dan Quayle look like Albert Einstein.

Drier   September 20th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Both CNN and Obama are "disabled." Oh, did I forget to mention Congress which is controlled by the democrats? I suppose their 15% approval rating is W's and "McSames" fault as well.

Atlian   September 20th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Obama got $100,000 from the EMPLOYEES of Fannie. McSame got $169,00 from the DIRECTORS, OFFICERS and LOBBYISTS of Fannie. Tell the whole truth! Just like Obama' s senate vote in Illinois was 130 times present out of 4000 VOTES. While in the US Senate McSame has only voted 45% of the time compared to 67% for Obama. TELL THE WHOLE TRUTH!!!

john from PA   September 20th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

this man should be in jail and not giving an interview.

bob   September 20th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Rangel is a fool and most obama supporters dont know the difference between a factual statement and a literal one. saying she can see russia is like saying it is in "backyard" Not a statement of fact , not a true statement like" I have never been proud of my country"

Lay off of Rangel!   September 20th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

The McCains didn't pay taxes on their beach front condo for 4 years!

ccrane   September 20th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Why is this news and yet there's no mention on CNN of the fact that Palin's office did approve Monegan's trip to DC? Why is the MSM so afraid to expose a huge GOP cover-up of ethics violations?

Moon Maiden from Lake Michigan   September 20th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Your energy stinks.

Unshrub   September 20th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

The higher Obama climbs in the polls, the more ridiculous republicans become. The thought of republicans loosing the election is driving them bonkers. McCain is going to loose and their is nothing they can do about it.

Hillary 2012   September 20th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

Rangel did you pay the back tax

Do that first

Even Bill Clintons said don’t under estimate Palin

Nancy   September 20th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

I don't see how a presidential candidate is responsible for anything someone else says. I don't put too much weight into anything anyone says except for the actual presidential and vice presidential candidates. The he said she said game is very juvenile. And why are supporters calling each other names. You should talk about the people running for office, not each other. Your vote is your vote and you shouldn't resort to name calling or intimidation. I have been watching these blogs for the last few months and I have to point out it's coming more from McCain/Palin supporters.

hans   September 20th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

See it all about name calling. That is the only thing the Dems are really good at. Oh wait sorry they are also good at taking our money.

Curious why no one is upset regarding Obama's attempt to stall the troop withdrawl till after the election, while trumpeting
the get out now charge while on US ground. That is playing politics with the soldiers lives.

God forbid, just look at our cities with such people.

Do you think for one minute that if YOU went behind your boss's back and tried to derail company policy that you would NOT be fired?

Oh, I forgot - you probably don't have a job - just waiting for another government hand-out!

DR   September 20th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

It's like everyone has to walk a fine line when it comes to Palin. If she don't have the tough skin that it take to be VP then she need to get out This country is hurting and the Republican want to play silly season just to put Palin on the front pages so we want focus on the downfall of Wall Street where McCain and his lobbyist want to keep deregulating to hell in a hand basket.

Is Palin able to learn about the foreign policies or the economy within 7 weeks before the election? I'm sick of this crap CNN, why don't you try to get her on one your shows? And then lets see if she disable or not.

Rob   September 20th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

It was a poor choice of words. Not really newsworthy. Glad to see his back tax issue was resolved.
VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN!!!

Wes   September 20th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Why don't the majority of republicans who have to try and rationalize this and who also think she was simply a political pick to help McCain win demand he select someone who is actually qualified? When you listen to republican senators and members of congress try to defend her qualifications you can see they don't even believe it themselves.

Palin is disabled, she is a pathological liar who just cannot tell the truth. Every word she has said about her record is designed to deceive. Now the facts about her line about taking a pay cut when mayor of Wasilla bears this out yet again. She did take a pay cut, then within months raised it to more than it was by several thousand dollar. A few years later she cut her pay to what it was when she took office and three months later increased it by $4000. That is over what it was when she came into office. It sure looks like she was planning for the future.

So you can argue all day whether it was a lie, you cannot argue her comments are intentionally deceptive. Is this really the type of person you want to be in the second highest office of the executive branch? On the plus side I suppose is you get two for the price of one. Todd Palin seems to be the ever present consort and adviser. I wonder if he'll be allowed into the NSA meetings. This is weird stuff people, look beyond the fluff at the substance and you won't see any but a vindictive, scornful, secretive person and politician.

The good Lord help us if Palin-McCain are elected.

SARAH, TO MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER RANGEL MEANT "BANKRUPT"   September 20th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

As in devoid of any knowledge of anything truthful.

As devoid of intelligence, such as the statement that you have foreign policy because you can see Russia from Alaska.

So, to recap, you are morally, ethically and intellectually bankrupt.

Feel better now?

Monopoly Games   September 20th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

From a democrat who grew up in the Bronx New York I must say Rangel has always been toxic to NY. It was time for him to go when he said those awful things about Obama and this just goes to show this man needs to retire. He is out f step and out of touch with us all.

Now, not to say that nutty with flowers Ms. Plain is not twisted with a 2% ratings on her policy experience who offers nothing to the American people but pimping out her family but Rangel who owes back taxes, gaming the system and who's willing to kick Harlem residents out of their homes these two pees in a pot should move in the middle of the Alaska ocean and just stay there...... forever.... maybe Russia can bail out these two idiots, but hopefully no time soon.

Sarah P.   September 20th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Poor Palin. She feels insulted. Give Barbie a new lipstick hope she will stop lying from now on.....

James From Chicago   September 20th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Andy   September 20th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

With the problems this country has,

We really need to focus in Apaling palin, the fork-tonged lady, now.

People are hurting and Republicans are looking for a way out!

ENOUGH OF REPUBLICAN LIES AND CORRUPTION.

ENOUGH OF 8 UNLUKY YEARS.

WE NEED DEMOCRATS BACK.

APS in Hawaii   September 20th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Funny how if I forgot to pay taxes I get hammered. Sorry Charlie, I do not feel sorry for you. And to make the statement twice during the same interview shows what kind of person you really are. Your own words are your worst enemy.

Scott   September 20th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Obviously the corrupt Mr. Rangel should have been looking in the mirror when he used the term disabled.

Liberals tend to be very disrespectful of others. They will disrupt speeches by conservatives, commit vandalism while protesting in the streets and in general violate the rights of others. They truly are facist!

Marc   September 20th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

The level of idiocy demonstrated by politicians this year is impressive!

Miscellaneous   September 20th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

If we want to make the best possible choice for the US, and want the presidential votes to be "accurate", the American people need to set aside any past party preference, and use their INTELLIGENCE. People need to leave behind any hype from the media given to either party, and really listen to what McCain & Obama are saying, then make your choice based on that. Don't let anyone around you brainwash you, or impose their beliefs onto you. You need to go with your instincts. Recognize the candidates intentions -who is genuine and who uses political personality or dodgy strategy to brainwash people into winning the election? Who's priority is with the American people, and who's seems to be with themselves? Because those ways will be used throughout the entire presidency, and if they aren't straight from the beginning, then we would never truthfully be informed on what's really going on in the country. This isn't a popularity contest, this affects all of our lives.

Student from PA   September 20th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Why is it when a republican congressman from Lynn Westmoreland calls Obama "uppity" CNN has nothing on that?!? Both sides should stop with the petty bickering!

Hello   September 20th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

has anyone seen the news about the economy? we are in deep trouble, it is time to remove the republicans from power.

jayel   September 20th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

disabled? more like "unable" – to answer questions from the media. unable- to tell the truth, inspite of the fact that its been documented that she is lying. unable- to be transparent (troopergate) despite promising to be open and accountable. she's obviously so full of it and i'm surprised that the american people seem to gravitate to her just like they did to Bush 4 years ago. Amazing.

Diana   September 20th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Hey – I am disabled. Don't dumb down, dirty up the disabled by saying Palin is disabled. She's a disgrace, but certainly not disabled.

ket   September 20th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Yea!!!! CNN... try to change the conversation after all Obama is ahead in the polls ya gotta put a stop to that. Got to keep this race close.

Mark, Washington   September 20th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Way to take things OUT OF CONTEXT, Republicans! No wonder you're gonna lose this year!

Moderate and Balanced   September 20th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Actually...I think it's the liberals on this blog who are disabled....not Sarah Palin. Of course, half of the posts on this blog are fake...done with fake names by the same democrat who is payrolled by Obama to go around blog to blog trying to fool people into believing there are thousands of people who actually are going to vote for Obama....and we know that's not going to happen.

McCain will win this election...even if the Democrats manipulate the economy.

Bill   September 20th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

You know, ever since I heard that McCain called his wife Cindy the "C" word in public I just can't see or hear the word McCain without thinking McHunt. Folks, if you see a McCain bumper sticker or McCain sign try not to think McHunt!

I think your should worry about the law when all this is looked into sure would like to know about Obama getting 80Million from fanny fay you know thats our money why doesnt he give it back no hes only out for himself not America

George in FL   September 20th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Obama fans – relax!!

A Gallup poll today found that Obama has a SIX point lead over McCain. Looks like the Palin pick really HAS backfired.

I think (most) Americans are smart enough to know that a person who equates foreign policy experience with being able to see Russia from her house should NEVER be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Oh, and I totally agree with Rangel. Hehe.

CJ   September 20th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

He must be partially correct; otherwise, the press would have access to freely interview her, and the GOP would not feel the need to try to stifle an investigation in Alaska that was well under way before she was even considered as a VP running mate. Oh, one more thing, how is it that she and her husband are above the law? If anyone else was in the situation of denying a subpoena, he/she would be in BIG trouble, and let us all not forget that a judge in Alaska has already ruled that if she and her family do not leave this state trooper alone that custody of her sister's children will go to the trooper. This rather reminds me of the movie, "The Stepford Wives."

Shel Bailey   September 20th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

More whining from the 'pit bull' who is o tough-why doesn't the Palin-McCain ticket offer some answers instead a lot of lies and political flack?
Probably because they don't have any programs to offer that are different from the last 8 years. McCain sold his maverick soul when he picked Palin-what a cynical choice.

Former Republicans for Obama   September 20th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

To Big Bear, Bearden, AR 71720:

The difference is this: Barack Obam chose a VP Candidate who is FULLY qualified to take over if something should happen to him. John McCain chose someone who is not qualified to run this country if, God forbid, something should happen to him.

If Barack wins and something happens, this country will still be in great hands. If John McCain wins and something happens – talk about a disaster.

For someone who uses "Country First" as his slogan, McCain sure made a poor decision on his VP Choice. He chose his candidate in an attempt to steal a few cheap votes – Barack Obama chose what was in the best interest of this country. Which one is truly putting "Country First?"

Obama/Biden '08

denise grimes   September 20th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

everyone must stop wasting our valuable time with the "back & forth" that has become a large part of this campaign season.Could we focus on how to treat each other with respect set some examples and solve some problems or did anyone not notice a few systems are either imploding or are about to. I have a great suggestion, how about resisting the temptation to feed the fires and show me how you are going to fix it,what help can you give what do Americans need to do etc. The brilliance of these past 2 terms to destroy a country, a region,a way of life without the slightest remose is astonishing! My sad memories of Vietnam should have been everybody's,maybe we would not be in this mess if a little more attention or intrest in history and it's teachings would have prevailed, not to mention the crime of GREED,Gordon Gheko was wrong then and as long as that urge is not cheked we just wait for the next set of jokers to wreak havoc at all of our expense

Melody   September 20th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

now the media is favouring mcain against Obama. Macain says that health care should be left deregulated as the financial industry and it will be efficient as the financial industry. Macain wants to privatisze social security. Palin talks about being wired and Palin, like Macain has a very poor college record. but the media says nothing.

G   September 20th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

I didn't even understand what his comment meant so I found it hard to be offended lol. Everytime I come to CNN Palin has been offended by someone or something. This is exactly what the Mccain camp wants stupid distractions in order to not talk about the economy its so obvious. Rangel should just keep his mouth shut for now on he is only causing distractions and right now Obama is doing so good. He look so presidential yesterday with his economic advisers non by the way from the Bush team (unlike McSame). Keep on message Obama and talk about the economy the #1 issue people will see how well prepare you are to fight for them and let Mccain focus on silly things that don't matter. Just goes to show how the Mccain camp really focuses on what's important. Please post CNN.

Diana   September 20th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

now isn't that stupid it wasn't Sarah who said that that was said by a comedian during a commedy skit ........... shows where the democrats are going with all their lies I sure wouldn"t trust Obamah defending America all he wants to do is talk

Susan   September 20th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

It is about time someone reports the FACTS about Obama Biden, McCain and Palin.
I MEAN FACTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No so called reporter ever just states the FACTS. Give us a resume on each person running, Then let us see on our own who is the best person for the job.

I bet the Liberals would not want to just look at the facts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I

Larry   September 20th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Palin lied again

Palin, saying she did not authorize the expenses for the travel, cited that trip as a primary example of the insubordination that led to Monegan's firing.

However, Palin's chief of staff did authorize the travel to Washington.

A travel authorization document signed by Palin's Chief of Staff Mike Nizich on June 18 approved Monegan's trip to Washington for the purpose of meeting Sen. Lisa Murkowski.

The document's existence was first reported by ABC News on Friday.

Monegan told ABC that the travel authorization was explicitly to pursue funding for the anti-sexual-violence program, though the document does not state that as a reason for the trip.

Larry   September 20th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

McCain made a poor political choice in selecting Palin and now has to live with it.

If pukelosi cared anything, even 1/10 of 1% for the American taxpayers she would have dismissed him. Oh, that's right, has pukelosi got her new paid for by the American taxpayers jet?

Hey dems did the little woman gov. from Alaska scare you?

Kathy   September 20th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

I think Charlie's wife is the one that is disabled, as she was the one who took care of his taxes, or so he says. Typical Obama supporter, runs his racist, sexist mouth.

nate   September 20th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

As a NYCer, I agree Charlie is old and out of touch. Still when you ask a VP candidate about her foreign policy exp and she says I can see Russia from my window...is that a joke?

malclave   September 20th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

According to the Obama camapign, the presidential candidate is responsible for anything stated by anyone who supports him. It doesn't even matter if the statement is in context or not.

Given that fact, Obama is pure scum for this statement, and only hateful, despicable, intolerant, pathetic excuses for human beings would support him.

Get Real Larry   September 20th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

In response to Larry who posted "Leave it to a Democrat to justify anything and everything !!"

That statement as no basis in fact.

Dems turn on other Dems in a split second.

Republicans would vote for a cardboard cut out of Reagan if it ran for President.

Bob Coleman   September 20th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

What makes a someone a "DIE HARD DEMOCRAT" like Ms. Democrat, above?

I've been thinking about this for some time now. A die hard democrat is AT LEAST recognizing a strong commitment to equality and fairness. If so, then let's discount the fact that most of you agree with derogatory comments to disabled people. That doesn't seem equality focused, and certainly doesn't seem fair.

If DIE HARD DEMOCRATS don't care about fairness and equality, then that SCARES me. In fact, such "die hard dems" remind me of die hard republicans- you know, the kind who voted for Reagan, but are also comfortable with Bush (which are two different parties, really).

Rhonda from SC   September 20th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Palin can see Russia from Alaska...OOOH now she can spy on them and come back and tell us all their foreign secrets! She can hear them too, right?

Palin should have disabled her mouth from saying something so stupid!

Lissa in Montreal   September 20th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Sure people say things that don't come off as the brightest things to say, but Palin doesn't need defending – she has shown her inability (note: not DISability) to handle questions, the truth, or the 2nd chair to the presidency – she isn't disabled. She's INabled. And sadly, at the hands of the GOP, ENabled.

Bill   September 20th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Seriously Democrats cannot understand how anybody could not agree with them 100% of the time. They seem incapable of understanding that not everyone thinks like them. They are so in lock step with their Leader that the comparisons to what happened in the 1930's is remarkable. Anybody that opposes them must be an unintelligent subhuman and if they had their way locked up in some sort of concentration camp.

Sharon from B.C.   September 20th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

I do agree but perhaps it could have been said differently. I also believe that Gov Palin will NOT take part in the debate. I think she will quit maybe next week or even closer to her debate. I think this has all been planned ahead of time. She has charged up the base and someone will come in and take it away.
If she goes to the debate then I feel she has been given the questions. In the few questions she has been asked ,the responses have not been good. Please post this.

Hannah   September 20th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Rangel and Rove periodically say something inflamatory to get into the news. In the meantime, both parties are using the current financial crisis to milk the taxpayer and reward their rich friends in banking and insurance.

This is the modern equivalent of 'bread and games'. Don't fall for it.

Informed   September 20th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Rangel was out of line with this comment. Who cares what he says. He is not a representative of Obama/Biden campaign. Let's not forget that it is the McCain/Palin campaing who has been the perpetuating official lies on the air and on the campaign trail everyday. I am a registered republican and am completely disgusted with how the party has taken this election down a rat hole.

By the way where is the piece about her witch hunting pastor whom she invoked during her run for the governorship?

To all who are committing on the mental state of Gov. Sarah Palin, I have several questions:

Are you a doctor? When did you evaluate her? Do you have a license to practice? Are you just spouting the party line? I am betting it is the latter! Truth is, anyone we elect is going to slip up and not keep promises, say and do te wrong thing. Its called being a HUMAN! They will fail! Our job as voters to to research who best matches your values. We don't have to destroy those who do not! Just don't vote for them, and leave their spouses and children out of it! Grow up people!

With that Big Surprise coming in October by the Democrats, will they drop Senator Biden and appoint Senator Hillary Clinton as "VP". Is this "change" possible?. If this happens, can we say that Senator Obama had good "judgment", or has it been the DNC who makes all "decisions"?

After all the months of "vetting", and final choice of choosing Senator
Biden", can this change happen?

What about the lies McCain is trying to sell about Johnson and Raines advising Obama?

What about the differences in their policies on women?

What about their stands on reducing poverty, dealing with the crumbling infrastructure, education, or immigration?..or anything informative to help voters decide?

Rangel is an Obama ally. I can see why they get along so well. Rangel is a crook who doesn't pay his taxes and Obama likes getting houses paid for by crooks like Rezko.

Ryan in Minneapolis   September 20th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

"I can see Russia from my house" LOL!!!
Rangel calls her disable, I call her crazy.

David   September 20th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

After seeing how the McCain camp ran ads pretending that Obama called Palin a pig, it's foolish of Rangel to make an attempt at wit.

It the McCain camp had any thinner skin, they'd be flayed.

Kay   September 20th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Charlie Rangel is my congressman and he's become an angry old windbag. I love him for what he's done for his constituents, but whenever he opens his mouth, he take a few more votes from the person he's supposedly supporting. He's did it to Hillary Clinton during the primaries, and now to Barack Obama in the general election.

Enough, Charlie! Your days as a US congressman are numbered.

Once again a typical far left vicious, conscienceless, and cruel remark. These types of responses are a result of desperation, anger, and void of faith. I sure wish they could channel some of that anger towards the radical Islamic terrorists, but I guess it is in their DNA, and can't be helped.

Willow, in Iowa   September 20th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Maybe he misspoke, but he's right. Who in their right mind believes that Palin knows foreign policy because you can see Russia from parts of Alaska? Everybody knows that is the weirdest thing anybody's ever heard.

I think this fear of misspeaking and saying something the other side can use as ammunition is completely phobic. Sometimes you just got to come out and say it. It IS weird. these people are supposed to be literate, educated, smart, even brilliant, the best of the best. And someone says that statement about seeing Russia from Alaska, and just throws all of those adjectives out the window. Let's be plain speakers here, honest, forthright and believable.

Rhonda from SC   September 20th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Of course McCain would want to put more regulation on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac; it was designed for the poor. McCain is all about deregulating anything for rich people and regulating anyone poor.

Anyone who thinks McCain is going to help anyone who makes less than $250,000, or as a silly joke $5 million, must be crazy! He is hoping that there are enough Americans in the world who are not too educated to know or distinguish between his lies.

McCain is going to use any and everyone less fortunate to try to win the election and then go back to his bullsh-t! Don't trust a man who provides his true concept on the economy initially and flip flops when his is advisors makes him realize “oops, wrong political move”.

McCain is such a liar and Palin is just a waste of time...

Who knows what a republican is any more. George Bush became the biggest socialist in modern history this week, and the republicans seem to be OK with that. According to Sarah, she took a pay cut a couple of years ago. Sarah is one of the few who can take a pay cut and go from $64,000 to $68,000. No wonder Todd wasn't too upset.

Compared to Rangel Palin is a crimminal. Uneducated, unsophisticated,a natural born liar,a parent who has her priorities wrong, a light weight who takes her husband to work with her. Who does that? Rangel faced his trouble and resolved it. Palin is running away and hiding and lying about her problems. That is the difference. It has nothing to do with Dem or GOP-it has to do with adult, responsilbe behavior.

Stop bashing McCain on Social Security...........Since I was a kid some 50 yrs. ago our political leaders have been dipping into the funds for various social program.........such as welfare etc. .borrowing and never putting back..........Why cause it was easy for them to do.

I could see why McCain solution is sounder than leaving it there to be at risk.

And who said we would invest it in the stock market.........there are other places one can invest and save their money.

This is why Washington needs reform..........I am tired of supporting every cause that comes down the pike. I am tired of giving my hard earned money away.

I want real change – real reform – and I trust the only two people running can do this. McCain and Palin. They will give it their best, they are honest and trustworthy. They surround themselves with good people, they don't hang around people with shady pasts.

Another Palin lie

Palin, saying she did not authorize the expenses for the travel, cited that trip as a primary example of the insubordination that led to Monegan's firing.

However, Palin's chief of staff did authorize the travel to Washington.

A travel authorization document signed by Palin's Chief of Staff Mike Nizich on June 18 approved Monegan's trip to Washington for the purpose of meeting Sen. Lisa Murkowski.

The document's existence was first reported by ABC News on Friday Sept 19.

Monegan told ABC that the travel authorization was explicitly to pursue funding for the anti-sexual-violence program, though the document does not state that as a reason for the trip.

mary cleveland, ohio   September 20th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Rangel isn't running for VP and Palin is.
Palin will obviously be held to a higher standard because she is running for VP and running with a man who is 72 years old, which gives her a greater chance of having to serve as president.
Her behavior in Alaska, using her office for a personal vendetta is reason for her to be sacked. Now, she has made a serious mistake in judgment worse, by having the McCain campaign go up to Alaska to cover it up.
Furthermore, Palin could indeed be called disabled because, according to Webster, disabled can be a "mental impairment." She has to have a mental impairment to be a pathalogical liar, which she is without a doubt. She keeps repeating the same lies with the expectation that eventually people will believe her, and because if she wasn't lying about the "trooper-gate" situation, she and hubby would welcome the investigation, which they did before she was running for VP..

YakRob   September 20th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

He IS part of what's wrong with our government, but so is SHE. The issue is who, of the two candidates for POTUS, has the potential to help US change what's wrong with our government – my bet is on Obama.

Will - OKC   September 20th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Rangel is clearly a stooge for the Clintons, and after the revelations of his illegal tax evasion he is going all out to try and sully Obama's candidacy.

As someone else pointed out, he is definitely what is wrong with DC and is the epitome of someone who has been in Washington long enough that he now considers himself untouchable.

MJK - Chicago   September 20th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

I love how the Dems are actually embracing Charlie Rangel as their voice. It might be a good idea to have someone who is currently NOT under investigation for tax evasion speak out on your party's cause.

If Dems are comfortable having Rangel represent them this nation will be in serious trouble if Obama is elected.

Cam   September 20th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Big Bear above: regarding being concerned about Biden being a heartbeat away from the Presidency......Why would anyone worry about this? I mean, he has extensive foreign policy and domestic policy experience. The reason people fear Palin being a heartbeat away is because she is a liar, a corrupt politician, and has absolutely no experience in foreign affairs and very little in domestic policy experience. This is not a good combination for VP or POTUS. Think Bush/Cheney........

DB   September 20th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Jhan Ganyen   September 20th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

It's funny how democrats and republicans have a double standard when it comes to words that they use, and what words can be used against them.

If any republican were to call a dem "disabled," which in context is really meant to say "retard," it's all we'd hear about for two weeks on every major news network, with all you message boarders up in arms.

But the minute a dem says that to a republican, it's overlooked and even applauded.

There is no sincerity, honesty, or desire for the greater good in modern politics.

Terrorists aren't killing America; Americans are killing America.

Kristen   September 20th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

I agree–let's hear about McCain's gaffe where he thought Spain, a NATO ally in Europe and longtime friend of the US, was a hostile enemy from South America. Yeah, it was a poor choice of words, but it was clear that he wasn't meaning it the way the GOP pretend he did. Lipstick on a pig. Meanwhile, McSenile can't remember who Spain is. At least Rangel is facing his problems head on instead of running from them like Ms. Congeneality

The Democrats are by far the nastiest bunch this year.

Bob Coleman   September 20th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

This is EXACTLY what is wrong with this party. If we're going to make change, we have to stop the hypocritical framework.

You can't say that you understand the party's platform while making comments like that. There is just an inherent problem with saying: "Create programs for the disabled, the disabled are people too" and then saying "Palin is disabled because she lacks competence to lead."

It makes me wonder whether politicians actually care about the poor and disabled, or whether this is the most elaborate ploy- using them to get elected.

Gail AL.   September 20th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

I don't think anybody will pay much attention to Rangel, he's disabled himself.

REP now for DEM   September 20th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

its true and america is tired of her but no one wants to do a polls simply asking the question who do you think is going to run the country better ?do you beleave Palin has experince to be VP? I was tired of her 1 day after I heard about his Pick because it was seen as trying to pander the female vote and I hope America is smart enough to see it.

Shawn   September 20th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

She is disabled. Sarah Cheney Palin is NOT ABLE to be President.

She is not smart enough, honest enough, moral enough or experienced enough to come close to the White House. Thank goodness the bizarre media obsession with her has faded, and she is being exposed for what she is.

Her favorability ratings have plummeted 17 points into the negatives because the thought of this person being one heartbeat away from the Presidency is absolutely terrifying. Witness Obama's new momentum.

RYAN kr Jr   September 20th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

I strongly agree with Rep. Rangel. Republicans hate truth and Democrats should not be intimidated to speak. 8years of lies is enough.

Andrew   September 20th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

I think he should keep his foot in his mouth. Yes bad choice of words that should offend us all. He says a mistake, but not reporting income is tax evasion and that is breaking the law. You can work to lower your taxes with real deductions, but in the end, you will pay Uncle Sam. Now if Obama was in the Whitehouse, he would be paying a lot more. As for the other ethical mistakes, all the people on the hill do them, but he has been making a lot.

Alissa in Kansas   September 20th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

John Lane   September 20th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

I checked dictionary.com and the first definition given for "disabled" was "crippled; injured; incapacitated." Certainly she is crippled or incapacitated in her thinking. And it's obvious that he meant it that way, that is, metaphorically. And politicians of both parties (and most people) use such metaphorical expressions all the time. When they speak of a "perfect storm" or a "feeding frenzy" or say that someone is "has blinders on" or any number of other such expressions, it obviously is not meant to be taken literally, but figuratively. The same is true here. Only an idiot would think Rangel was saying Palin was literally disabled, mentally or otherwise. So I wonder what the fuss is all about.

Douglas, Los Angeles   September 20th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Excuse me, this race is not about Rangel. Besides, Obama and Biden didn't put those words in his mouth.

This is just another piece of fluff that the Palin/McCain team will use to distract the country away from real issues.

I think it's funny that democrats complain about Palin's experience (or lack thereof) with foreign policy. She's only running for vice president.

Don't the democrats know that their choice for president has zero foreign policy experience as well? And to boot, how long was he a senator before deciding to organize a presidential exploratory committee?

I'm an independent voter, and neither candidate intrigues me–but Obama is no more qualified than Palin, and he's running for president.

Wow, I just read that McCain was quoted just a month ago as saying he wants to deregulate the health care industry just like they have with the banking industry the past decade. Are you kidding me? This man is now lying through his teeth. He was in full support of the deregulation of the banking industry that caused our financial crisis and now all of sudden this week claims he wants to regulate them. McCain clearly is lying and cannot be trusted. He wants to fix HIS OWN mess he personally helped to create? Come on now.

toohip   September 20th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Palin is disabled in the sense that she would be unable to perform particular activities relating to foreign policy, domestic policy, economic policy, etc. It may have been a poor choice of words on the part of Rangel, but this candidate is not only incompetent---she has a huge dose of arrogance, ala Cheney, in which she clearly doesn't care what anyone thinks of her. If she did care, she could never have touted her knowlede of foreign policy, by saying she can see Russia from Alaska. The amazing part of this is that a significant sampling of the American people have let her get by with it. Hopefully, this will change-the future of this great country depends on defeating McCain/Palin!

Hillary Voter for Obama   September 20th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Palin an idiot, my question is what has she done that proves she is an idiot? All I saw from the day she entered in, was trying to crucify her. I don't blame her for avoiding the press, she was never given a chance. Just because she is not a Washington "insider" does not make her an idiot. In my opinion, just the opposite. You see where the big lawyers, etc. have gotten us. Guessing alot of people really don't want real change, huh?

Just looking at the comments posted here, I can tell you that the attitudes I see are precisely what's wrong with politics in this country. Too much hate and rancor. We aren't content to disagree with one another; The opposition must be "disabled", "retarded", or "out of their minds". The hateful things people say behind the anonymity of the internet is absolutely astonishing. And I'm not just pointing fingers at Obama supporters...Both sides engage in this nonsense.

Neither Obama nor McCain will change politics in this country if we don't have the emotional and intellectual self control to change how we perceive and engage in it ourselves.

Though I am not a Rangle fan. I agree she is disabled to handle the job. Stating as her foreign policy experience, that she can see Russia from her house, rising to the level of ignorance.

The Republicans is dumbing down the presidency and vice presidency. Each year they lower the qualifications for the commander and co-commander in chief.

The McCain/Palin administration [god forbid] would be worse that Bush/Cheney. The veil of secrecy already exist and their attempt to block troopergate–is insulting to the American people.

Bulldog   September 20th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

OH no, poor Sarah. If she can't take the heat get out of the kitchen like Hillary says. Quit whining Sarah, you are in the big leaques now. This isn't your campaign for mayor or governor of one of the least populated state in the US. You don't get to go around firing people in this campaign just because they don't agree with you. People aren't afraid of you like they were in Alaska. You're playing with the big boys and girls now.

Patrick   September 20th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

"Before all the sick democrats on this Ticker agree with Rangels, he is what is wrong with DC"

No what is wrong with DC is republicans who never EVER practice what they preach.

Free market!? HA! Only on Monday and only for Lehman.... now taxpayers own an insurance company and it looks like welfare for corporations is now the norm.

... and it's only going to cost us $ 700 billion dollars...

Lets see... national debt $ 9.676 trillion dollars plus another 700 billion is that 10.376 trillion dollars in debt?

high school student making a difference   September 20th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

You have got to be kidding me. Way to miss it completely GOP. Just keep on distort things... it only makes you look bad. And I don't particularly care for Rangel personally but what he said was true.

narie   September 20th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

How can any normal woman support Obama and his campaign. First they insult her for being a working mother, then they say she isn't a good mother, Obama himself calls her a pig, and please don't say he didn't, he knew exactly what he was saying, they call her a bit of fluff, the mock her handicapped child, they trash her pregnant teen age daughter, is this what women want. Obama has few women on his staff than McCain, and he pays them less than he pays his male employees. Obama has no respect for women, he demeans them whenever he can, just ask Hillary Clinton. Again what woman would vote for this man, so he says he's pro choice, his voting record of 8 present votes pertaining to a woman's right to choose says otherwise, as well as his recent approval of a ruling limiting a woman's access to abortion. So he's pro choice, he's anti woman!

Kara   September 20th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Hey, I'll second that!

JeffRob   September 20th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Rangel is absolutely correct, and he should have responded to the mock outrage by saying: "She is obviously not disabled physically or mentally, but her policies are completely disabled, literally retarded by an allegiance to a shallow neoconservatism, handicapped, unhealthy, of a dying breed, freakish in their ignorance, and 100% wrong for America."

That's what he should have said.

Precious   September 20th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

As a woman, I believe Sarah Palin is a wonderful and humble woman, and I do have a great respect for her, Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama.

As an Independent, I also have a great respect for Barack Obama and John McCain

I wonder what it would be like to have John McCain as "President", Barack Obama as "Vice President", and Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin in their "Cabinet".

I guess I will continue to dream of a bright future, but keep holding on to my "faith", since my "faith" is the hope that will bring me through it all.

jILL   September 20th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Hoang Lee   September 20th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

I support Obama/Biden but I don't support comments like the one Rengel made. But, please consider the source and don't blame
Sen. Obama. Listen to what he has to say not what others say.

DeLong Spokane   September 20th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Rep. Charlie Rangel needs to be reprimanded at the least for that comment. This is another reason the voting american public is so tired of some politicans, when their lips move more than not it's putting down another politican.

KARL HERRMANN   September 20th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

IT’S THE SIMPLE TRUTH OBAMA AND HIS CAMPAIGN HAVE WON THE ARGUMENT OVER GOV. PALIN AND THE ELECTRETS HAVE REACHED A CONSCIENCES THAT SHE AND OBAMA ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT ON DAY ONE!

ZANE   September 20th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

OBAMA = CHANGE!!!

Nannie Bouroughs   September 20th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

The Democrats ARE AFRAID OF GOVERNOR PALIN!

The MEN in the GOOD OLD BOYS GANG simply don't know how to deal with an intelligent woman...

Charlie Rangel is simply another Oblama sycophant, with almost as many ETHICAL PROBLEMS as Senator Oblama...

CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN: MORE OF THE DIRTIEST POLITICS YOU CAN IMAGINE!

Larry   September 20th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

I'm a Republican, however ,neither party has anything to brag about. Both of the options are sorry excuses for the American people to have to choose from.I can see why there's so much hate and name calling,it is hard to defend your candidates.

Bill in Ct.   September 20th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

I'll say it if the Democratics are afraid to say it, ( YES SHE HAS NO EXPERIENCES IN ANYTHING), I am truly upset with the bias MEDIA with this woman, they have allowed the republicans to dictate to them about reporting on this woman, if anyone says anything about her they, the (MEDIA), make sure you hear about it or the republicans are all over the tv saying that was SEXIST or some one disrespected Sarah, PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK,. With all the crap they the (Republicans) have said about Obama and still telling lies on Obama till this day, its ok, so now they want to cry wolf. Lets not forget that Palin is all over the stump talking about Obama with no shame and know one says anything about that but let him mention anything about her or sounds likes his talking about her the republicans are screaming ( SEXIST or Disrespectful ) PLEASE!!!!!!!!!. They want their cake and eating it to. MCSAME/PALIN is a joke!!!!!!!

BS   September 20th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Regarding the financial meltdown, Senator McCain was pretty clear that the he wasn't aware the economy was in bad shape even when Bernanke blew the horn in Jerusalem.

I hope McCain, 72, will retire now.

Amy   September 20th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

One more point, at least Mr Rangel is cooperating with the investigation which is a heck of a lot more than we can say for Ms Palin and Company!

Margo   September 20th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Palin can sure dish it out, but has a lot of trouble taking it. When she gets in a jam, she plays the sexist card Sarah Palin is a joke and the Republican ticket has become a a comedy of errors!

GO OBAMA!

Nathan   September 20th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Republicans....Democrats, their all worthless in Washington. Wish there was a way citizens like myself could vote to reduce their salaries from the six digit incomes they receive. The average politician is in it for themselves (money) and will get it one way or another. Greed !!!!!!!!!

Annie   September 20th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

I don't have feelings about Rangel one way or the other, but what would we honestly say to someone who came up to us on the street and told us they had foreign policy experience because you can actually see Russia from land in their state. We'd say "you're crazy," or "you're missing a few screws there." Be honest.

Joe in NJ   September 20th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Rangel is a lot older than McCain so why aren't people complaining that he's too old to serve?

Sandy   September 20th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

To Bobby who said:
I have never heard so much negativity and radical comments toward people than I have on this political ticker!

DId you not watch the Republican convention???

Wes   September 20th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

I think he was correct the first time, Palin is definitely intellectually disabled.

Nashville   September 20th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Rangel may have been talking about himself and his party. "Be kind to the disabled by voting for the mentally disabled – vote Democrat!". The guy is a loser who needs to be voted out of office. He sets yours and my tax structures and yet feels he is above them. He does not pay taxes appropriately and has no room to criticize anyone.

Typical Dumbocrat.

McCain/Palin 08

Patriot   September 20th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Rangle's mistake was not so much a bad choice of word as it is the fact that he even addresses a worthless question.
All outgoing fire should be directed at McCaint-bush. The inconsequential parts will fall if the head of the snake is made to fall.

b. Krause   September 20th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Of course, she's disabled. Creation science should be taught in the schools? Yup. That not only shows disability, but is disabling to others in the post literate culture. Rangel is precisely right!

Richard   September 20th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Sarah Palin is NOT DISABLED. She just has a DISABILITY TO TELL THE TRUTH.

Murry Pretone   September 20th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Why in heavens name would a man who has been in the political field so long allow himself to use such language. Obama would do well to lose contact with such a fool.

Also, the democrats have allowed themselves to be so distracted by the choice of Palen, that it scares me to death. What would they do if we had a real serious situation regarding our government. They have lost their way and need to regroup seriously. Don't attack, tell me what you are going to do to help our country, what is your plan, lay it out for me.

Candy West Virginia   September 20th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

At least he cooperated with his investigation unlike Palin.

Andrew   September 20th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

To the so called "last honest man". To say that Rangel is what is wrong with Washington is hilarious considering Cheney called all democrats cowards and traitors. Bush equated the democrats to the terrorists on several occasions. This is perfectly okay with you but this is over the top. The neo-cons are the worst of the worst when it comes to slander and smears.

Carl from MI   September 20th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Actually... instead of Rangel being what's wrong with Washington... let's look at the REAL culprits in the Culture of Corruption!!

Tom DeLay
Larry Craig
Mark Foley
Ted Stevens
Don Young
Lisa Murkowski
David Vitter
Etc...
And all those in the Bush Administration that have resigned in disgrace due to scandal!!!

So when we're talking about what's wrong with Washington... let's make sure we talk about those who are REALLY corrupt... compared to those who's accountants made a mistake on their tax returns.

WAKE UP, AMERICA!!!! VOTE SMART… NOT SENILE!!!

Scott Tucson   September 20th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Will someone please tell Obama there's a presidential slot opening up in South Africa, President Thabo Mbeki is steping down. So if things don't work out for Obama in November he can try for that position and take Joe with him.

bk   September 20th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Rangel has a lot of nerve. The Dems have Obama at the top of the ticket that has no economic or foreign policy experience and Gov. Palin is running for vp and has more experience than Obama. He has bamboozled everybody with his rhetoric into thinking he does.

Rangel is a crook and should be fired.

milbs   September 20th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Yep I said England and not UK. If your not an American citizen, then you have no right to speak either way about our political structure good or bad. Foop   September 20th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

"keep attacking palin will not help you she does have more experience the obama and Biden combine. and that scare the democrats. and yes rangel you are mentally disable."

How does a candidate with less than a full term as a state-level elected official have more experience than a medium-term and a long-term career elected official combined?

Don't be ignorant.

Darrell   September 20th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

As a person that has worked with many disabled people it is clear that is NOT what Rangel was saying. He was saying she is diadvantaged in experience, which happens to be true. Now go and hold McCain and Palin accountable for the outright frauds and lies they have been feeding everyone. This was one misguided word and you have a daily occurance of Palin and McCain making a mockery out of this campaign.

josephine   September 20th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

You people are a sick bunch. I hope Obama and all his hate mongering supporters, preachers, advisors and radical American hating friends all go down in flames in November. The American people are on to this mud slinging at Governor Palin just because it's obvious she is more experienced than their community organizer. God Bless America, cause we're going to need it after what this bunch has done to politics in this country.

HMcGee   September 20th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Why are we bothering to interview yet another unethical Democrat politician who seems to have no problem taking our tax dollars to fund his entitlement/pork programs as long as he isn't required to pay taxes himself? His comment was that of an ignorant, uninformed person who couldn't think of anything real to say so he attempted sarcasm. How do people like him end up being persons of influence?

Tim C   September 20th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Yes, Palin is an idiot. Yes, Rangel is an idiot. They both have ethics problems, although Palin seems much more dishonest than Rangel. And my guess is that neither of them would be very well liked in "middle America" if people got enough time to hear what they are both about.

These slipups are what happen when an elected official in a district/state has very little chance of being unseated. They get to say what they want, and their true colors are revealed.

The only difference between the two, politcally, is that Rangel clearly wants his earmark requests, where Palin lies about her taking those hundreds of millions of dollars for the "Bridge to Nowhere." Rangel is no friend or member of the progressive movement, and Palin is a great friend to the conservative regression.

RJ, CA   September 20th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Well, Charlie - ALL the Republicans would have to do is send Sarah Palin on a one-week sightseeing trip abroad to get the kind of foreign policy experience Obama has.

In the meantime, as usual, Chicken Little - Obama - is running around shouting, "The Sky is Falling, the Sky is Falling" about the economy. Great "leadership" characteristic!

What happened to the "audacity of hope," Obama?

But wait - in a few days - when everyone else has brought solutions to the table - rather than negative rhetoric - Obama will "miraculously" present HIS economic recovery plan. It will - as usual - be a regugitation of what he has stolen from others - and be delivered in lofty rhetoric!

Shirley Good   September 20th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Big Bear, Bearden, AR 71720   September 20th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

The Democrats love to say that Gov. Palin is only a heartbeat away from the Presidency if she becomes VP. My question to you is "Does Obama have a guarantee that he will be alive tomorrow?" I know that everyone reading this does not have such a guarantee, but I am not sure about Obama. If he does not have such a guaranteed, then isn't it of some concern, that Joe Biden is only a heartbeat away from the Presidency if he is elected VP?

Carl from MI   September 20th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Her ethics investigation will finish up in just a few weeks, and they will find her GUILTY of abusing the power of her office and GUILTY of lying about it!!! How many lies can this woman spew out before Nov. 4th??

I think Charlie Rangel is right about Sarah Palin. For anyone to say they see Russia from any window of there house in Alaska makes them a super smart person on world affairs is really stupid. But I never thought she was any thing in the first place. I got so tired of her saying about the bridge to no where, that she says she said no thanks, its enough to make me cringe. I say Charlie was right and we should tell Sarah Palin no thanks.

Here we go again   September 20th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

CNN, if you allow this nonsense to become the next lipstick on a pig, shame on you. And god help us all.

WHO CARES WHAT CHARLIE RANGEL SAID, AND WHETHER IT COULD BE INTERPRETED AS POLITICALLY INCORRECT OR NOT (by the way, is the euphemism "disabled" now a no-no too? It's not like Rangel called her "retarded.")

The question of this elections is how are Republicans going to fix an economic disaster that THEY CAUSED, when they still subscribe to the economic theories and philosophies that resulted in the meltdown? This whole thing is the fault of the unfettered, anti-regulatory "free-market" trickle down BS that the Republicans are going to keep giving us as long as we're dimwitted enough to let them stay in power. ENOUGH.

Dumb comment, but not as dumb as McCain's that: "We should treat health care reform like we have handled the Financial Industry for the last ten years." This is an article written by McCain for an Actuarial magazine THIS MONTH!!! Yea, deregulate the insurance industry–that's worked so well for the financial industry!!!

Rick Sutter   September 20th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Why is this bufoon still in office?

Dumb choice of words   September 20th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

NOT "PC" choice of words, but the sentiment that somehow Palin is confused / misinformed / disadvantaged / damaged / incompetent because she thinks proximity to Russia is "foreign policy experience" is straight talk.

Now if she told us she'd negotiated an exchange of moosemeat for borscht with a Russian diplomat, that would be different...

Palin can be forgiven for her hubris, McCain can't be forgiven for his poor choice of VP.

McCain on banking and health
OK, a correspondent directs me to John McCain’s article, Better Health Care at Lower Cost for Every American, in the Sept./Oct. issue of Contingencies, the magazine of the American Academy of Actuaries. You might want to be seated before reading this.
Here’s what McCain has to say about the wonders of market-based health reform:
Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation.
So McCain, who now poses as the scourge of Wall Street, was praising financial deregulation like 10 seconds ago — and promising that if we marketize health care, it will perform as well as the financial industry!

obama 08

His "disabled" comment was given BECAUSE he said she had foreign policy adviser SIMPLY due to the fact that she can see Russia from her state. It's obvious he didn't mean anything bad about it... just the fact that this lady is supremely unqualified to the VP.

While Rangel may not have described Palin very well in his speech, you cannot say that Palin's case in Alaska is any less serious than Rangel's. The difference though, is the fact that Rangel is facing his demons head on while Palin is masking hers while still trying to look good to the public. Americans are no so dumb to buy into what McCain's camp is trying to sell to the American public. I might be wrong on that after all they elected George Bush twice in to office.

What's the Problem?   September 20th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Six rinky dink colleges in five years and still can't pronounce "nuclear". I'd say Mr. Rangel is correct!

Poor choice of words but certainly honest in that the distinguished Governor Air-Head does appear to meet the definition of mentally and certainly morally deficient.

huckychby   September 20th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

Why do we hear about a one word slip-up, but nothing about Mccain's several sentence bashing of Spain?

Before all the sick democrats on this Ticker agree with Rangels, he is what is wrong with DC.

Robert Wooller, West Yorkshire England   September 20th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Who will Sarah Palin not get offended at? Yes, Palin, I could get offended at you because you eat moose, go hunting and are part of the NRA and you are for global warming and drilling in the arctic refuge. As for Obama being ahead in the polls, this is great news and I hope he keeps up the great work. Take the swing states as well as the Obama States.

Obama-Biden 2008

huckychby   September 20th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Why do we here about a one work slip-up, but noting about Mccain's several sentence bashing of Spain?

Elizabeth   September 20th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Why would people listen to Charles anyway? He wants to have the military draft again and he talks out two sides his mouth. I'm not surprised he said something stupid, but I'm still voting democrat.

You aren't disabled if you vote for McCain, you are just ignorant.
