Democrats are seizing on a report the McCains own at least 13 cars.

(CNN) — Democrats eager to portray John McCain as out of touch with average Americans and as a flip-flopper seized on a report Sunday the Arizona senator and his wife, Cindy, own more than a dozen cars — including several foreign-made automobiles.

A Newsweek article published on the magazine's Web Site Sunday said registration records show the McCains currently own 13 cars — two of which are foreign-made: a Honda and a Volkswagen. That appears to contradict the Republican presidential nominee's past statements he only buys cars made in America. (Cindy McCain also drives a Lexus and daughter Meghan owns a Toyota Prius, but neither are registered to the McCains.)

Newsweek also reported Barack Obama owns one car: a Ford Escape Hybrid.

In a quickly-arranged conference call organized by the Democratic National Committee, United Auto Worker Union President Ron Gettelfinger — an Obama supporter — said the registration records show McCain is not being truthful with Americans and undermining autoworkers.

Listen: Gettelfinger blasts McCain on conference call with reporters

"The last thing we need is a presidential candidate who undermines autoworkers, and these days it seems that John McCain is doing just exactly that," he said. "When he's in the Midwest, he tells voters he supports the industry, when he is in other states he brags about buying a foreign car, as he did with the Prius." (It is not clear if McCain or his daughter bought the Prius)

Gettelfinger also pointed to comments McCain made in an interview with Detroit TV station WXYZ, saying, "I've bought American literally all my life and I'm proud."

"That's really a nice campaign line," Gettelfinger said of the comments. "But it turns out that John McCain wasn't being straight with the people of Detroit, or the state of Michigan, or our country as a matter of effect," adding later, "The American auto industry and the American voters deserve a president who will be straight with them.”

For the record, Honda has four major automobile and engine plants in the United States employing more than 25,000 Americans, according to its Web site. Volkswagen is scheduled to open a plant in Tennessee in 2011 that is expected to employ 2,000 people, the AP reported in July.

Brian Rogers, a spokesman for McCain, said "Barack Obama is more interested in childish political attacks than confronting the reality that his plans to raise taxes and close off trade will kill our American auto industry and the jobs of hardworking folks in Michigan and all around our nation."

Rogers also said McCain was referring to his own car in the WXYZ interview:  "He drives a Cadillac today and has always driven American cars," Rogers said.

Newsweek's report comes a month after McCain now-infamously could not name how many houses he owned in an interview with Politico. The publication later reported he owns at least eight properties.

There is nothing more American than owning as many cars and houses as you can possibly afford! I am a registered Democrat and I don't have a problem with Mr. and Mrs. McCain owning however many cars and homes as they can afford. Is Mr. McCain out of touch with the American people? Well I am from Hawaii and can tell you that the school Mr. Obama attended is quite elitist and far removed from the world of the average salaried worker in Hawaii. As far as the UAW weighing in, let's face it, the UAW is equally to blame for the auto workers strife as the management of the companies the workers are employed by. If Mr. Obama's handlers had any sense they would be talking comprehensively about his plans to make these "changes" in our government and nation and CNN would be screaming for details rather than running "ticker" reports on non-issue charges.

acl0608   September 21st, 2008 6:36 pm ET

So what's the big deal? That leaves 11 American cars that are registered to McCain. Most people own only 1 or 2 American cars or drive foreign made vehicles. Sounds to me like McCain has put his money where his mouth is when it comes to buying American.

Jason   September 21st, 2008 6:35 pm ET

Strange how McShame can question anybodys patriotism, when he owns a few foreign cars and calls the other guy an Elist. Considering that the america auto industry is in trouble, and McShame would rather send his money to a foreign auto maker!

Jeremy   September 21st, 2008 6:34 pm ET

It is absolute Right to buy foreign cars but Morally wrong to LIE about it……..especially for Presidential Material! All British Government operate British made cars. Actually the Late Princess Diana was in trouble for buying BMW. Germany and France likewise have similar laws. Mcain should endevor to lead by example.

annette   September 21st, 2008 6:34 pm ET

This does not surprise me at all about McCain.

andrew s   September 21st, 2008 6:34 pm ET

can i hear out of touch? american wake up and fire them all

Emily   September 21st, 2008 6:34 pm ET

I doubt McCain knew what cars he had when he made the comment. Either way, he flip flops way too much.

I will point out, though, that Obama has one of the most sought after and hardest vehicles to find on the market right now. You know how long my husband and I have been looking for a Ford Escape Hybrid?

whybuffetmatters   September 21st, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Lier Lier pants on fire.. How can we have a President who doesn't buy American cars? I am a common citizen and will look for value. But, a Presidential candidate with $100 m in wealth lying to get votes? Sickening.

jonathan   September 21st, 2008 6:33 pm ET

My friends, for five in a half years as a POW in Vietnam I didn't have any cars. Although one time at Christmas, one of my captors drew a steering wheel in the sand and we pretended to drive together.

Charlotte   September 21st, 2008 6:33 pm ET

I guess Michelle doesn't drive? He doesn't need any, with all those taxpayer vehicles furnished. I only see him getting into big black SUVs?

Kal Venkataraman   September 21st, 2008 6:33 pm ET

There is nothing wrong on the part of McCains to own Honda or Toyota. As a consumer every one has a right to expect value for the money they invest in items like cars. As an owner of GM car my experience has been dismal. Before Mr. Gettlefinger raises his finger let him insist on the UAW workers to produce quality cars. For manufacturing such poor quality automobiles, the UAW expects costly medical care even after retirement and liberal other benefits. The management of GM is more interested in pocketing money for themselves and the dealers are happy milking the customer for fixing the defects. In fact public ends up holding the bag to support the US auto industries. Noe they ask for $25 Billion in rescue package from the government.
On the other hand if you buy the foreign cars, one need not worry about all these problems. I am not a supporter of McCain but it is a dumb argument to use against him.

Paul, NY   September 21st, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Unbelievable!!

What a jerk!! McCain is the same as every other republican i've heard of.. He's a Liar, manipulative, and makes me sick!

Oh, and in his bio McCain wrote that the reason he wants to become president is because he sees this as his last chance to achieve the goal!

Rose   September 21st, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Good grief, now we are talking about cars, can't the Dems come up with something better than that?? Who cares how many cars the McCains have, so what?? Get real with real issues. Obama is now scraping the bottom of the barrel. More people driven foreign cars because they are cheaper, take a look at the cars next time your on the freeway. I don't care what kind of a car Obama drives either.
Quit talking about the petty stuff and get real.

Ohio for Obama   September 21st, 2008 6:33 pm ET

This is to all the McShame followers and Campaign staff who continue to get on the Cable Network and say President Obama voted 94 times for raising taxes.

Fact Check:
Verdict:
Misleading. McCain's summary ignores the fact that some of the votes were for measures to lower taxes for many Americans, while increasing them for a much smaller number of taxpayers. A nonpartisan examination also finds that the 94 total includes multiple votes on the same measures and budget votes that would not directly lead to higher taxes.

CJ   September 21st, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Well if american automakers would produce a hybrid like the prius or insight and bring high mpg cars that they offer in other countries to the US then maybe that would not be a rpoblem

Wake Up!!   September 21st, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Why is it that John McCain is able to blantly LIE about so much and yet still people are willing to vote for him.

John McCain's and his campaign has become Sooooo Sad. Once a man that I highly respected, he has now been reduced to a uncontrollable liar that will do and say anything so as long as the media will not out him. He has now stolen almost everyone of Barack Obama's lines: ie (change, enough, he just doesn't get it, wall street vs main street and it goes on and on).

it's sad, an American war hero has become a bumbling puppet without a mind of his own. Americans vote for this man if you want but be prepared to deal with the consequences. I am no obama supporter and I was going to vote for John McCain, but now I realize that John does not deserve my vote.

I will not allow party lines to dictate my vote, nor will I allow racism, sexism and all the other "ism" to dictate my vote. I am now searching for which one of the alternative parties to vote for.

SOMETIMES A PROTEST VOTE IS BETTER THAN VOTING FOR SOMEONE WHO IS UNDESERVING.

The last time I checked both Honda and Volkswagen have plants in the US that obviously create US jobs, Every traditional so-called American auto manufacturer likewise has plants in Canada, Mexico, Europe etc. Big Deal! This is globalization and has been happening over the last 40 years. Anyone with a brain knows that there no longer is an 'American Car'. This is another case of media trying to spread their political smear. Wake up America! We are not sheepish idiots and we must no longer tolerate these kind of spin stories.

abc   September 21st, 2008 6:31 pm ET

So what!

Heath   September 21st, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Is this a surprise? Here is a man that said that "he would only raise taxes on those making more than $5 million." Out of touch is an understatement. We're fighting two wars, we are on the verge of a financial meltdown and this man still wants to lower taxes for the wealthy and wage wars, potentially with Iran. How is he going to pay. Americans will be paying for this folly long after McCain is dead and gone. I hope America is not asleep at the wheel. We are at a turning point in history. America's standing in the world is at stake.

Dennis   September 21st, 2008 6:30 pm ET

McCain's purchase of 13 cars is very good for US autoworkers and the US auto industry. Democrat plans to raise taxes are bad for the auto industry and the whole economy. In case the Democrats haven't heard, may brands of "foreign" cars such as Toyota, Mercedes and Honda are in fact made in the US. The fact that McCain has 13 cars is a non issue. It's also irrelevant that O'Bama owns only one car. I'm more worried about O'Bama's ties to anti-Americans Ayers and Wright and felonious slumlord Rezko. O'Bama's Socialist agenda which will destroy the economy is also a major concern.

john   September 21st, 2008 6:30 pm ET

The money and business Cindy has really is not the question that was all family owned like they been saying forget the cheap shots worry about the security of the United States ….. Really best of luck to her at least she didn"t take 80 million from the people of this country

McCain is really out of touch… and lost his marbles. Man, we just went thru 8 years of Lies… Is there anything else that John or Sarah do besides Lie??? She has been caught in several, and only been in this thing a few weeks… But 7 houses, 13 cars… how can McCain even know what I go thru on a daily basis earning a minimum wage which he keeps voting against to raise??

Nice going John, I hope Sarah shoots a Smith & Western too.

indy chris   September 21st, 2008 6:29 pm ET

does he even know how many cars he owns? I doubt it.

I'm curious as to how many mistresses he has.

there's just something unamericn about marrying your wealthy mistress and using her weaqlth and connections to get power…not to mention being from an elite family, the son of a tycoon or a president or an admiral. we fought a revolution to get away from that sort of decadent, aristocratic europeanism.

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   September 21st, 2008 6:29 pm ET

I have no problem with the Prius as it is a fuel-efficient car.
I hae no problem with the Lexus as it is a luxury car and many rich people buy high end luxury cars. Heck, even a lot of middle income folks who want to be seen as in the mix, buy high end cars.
What I don't understand is how he owns 13 cars, unless you're saying that he has cars (which would make some sense) at each of his 8 houses. That is, at least 8.

Now for the average charachter like me, I own a vehicle and so does my spouse. That's it. I don't know personally know anyone who, as a family, owns more than 3 vehicles.

So, I can't see how Senator McCain can relate to people like me. Which is problably why he doesn't want to give me as big a tax cut as those folks who do, on avg, own more than three cars and more than two homes (which would be like McCain).

Not wanting him to be an average guy in income like Biden and his wife Jill, just saying that his tax policies (and deregulation stances for the last umpteen years) seem to fit his lifestyle. Nothing wrong with that, at least for him and his cronies. Just that more than 70% of us don't fit that.

In the end, the people who are towards the bottom will spend the money if you give it to them, and those who own the businesses will get it back.

Lastly, does anyone realize that at the peak of the gas prices in July was also the same time that the rebate checks were showing up in the mail? Shouldn't take you long to figure out where much of that rebate money from the Feds went to.

I am a Democrat and I know which way I am voting; but, for goodness sake, with all the problems facing us today including a domestic, economic melt-down; and a still ongoing war abroad, we are now going to inject how many cars somebody owns into this political campaign? No wonder we have an economic crisis. The regulators are out counting how many cars people own. Just when I thought nothing could get any worse, I read this. We need help, quickly.

Kathy in Portland, Oregon   September 21st, 2008 6:28 pm ET

This is laughable!

How PETTY of the democrats. WHO CARES if McCain owns a dozen vehicles, and that a couple of them are not "American" made.

Chris   September 21st, 2008 6:28 pm ET

As a Democrat, I think this line of attack is both juvenile and idiotic. Firstly, so what if McCain has that many cars? If he can afford them, and he can afford to pay for the insurance for all of them and the registration money which goes to state government by the way, that's his right. Secondly, if several of his cars are foreign, so what? A good percentage of Americans own foreign cars, including Hondas. Seriously, that is being hypocritical because I am sure that a good percentage of people in the Democratic party own foreign cars, including Hondas. Thirdly, the article says only two of the 13 are foreign made; what about the other 11? Those must be American made if they aren't foreign cars, so what does that say? McCain has paid 11 times the money to buy American made cars as a person who has only bought one American car. This nitpicking and hairsplitting is part of the reason why McCain is not only still in the running, but has a decent chance of winning when he shouldn't . Obama and the DNC don't know how to win or run an effective campaign so they nitpick, hair split, and attack their opponent on things that don't even matter. Who really cares if McCain has that many cars or a bunch of houses? It is no more out of touch with Americans as Obama's multimillion dollar book deal. All that this says is both candidates have been lucky enough to have realized their American dreams.

Does the UAW realize not all cars made by the Big 3 are made in the US? Actually very few are producded in the US anymore. My 2008 GMC Sierra was made in Canada. Honda does have some factories in the US that they build there cars at. So could the Dems actually complain about McCain not buying american, probably but most of those cars he owns are probably form the GM, Ford or Chrysler and not made in the US.And as far as the Suburbans that they all ride in are built in 3 locations Janesville, Wisconsin Arlington, Texas Silao, Mexico.

Many foreign cars and trucks are made in America by Americans My wifes 2008 Camry and my 2008 Toyota Tacoma were both made in America by Americans. Nice try by the Obama camp but Americans arn't that Stupid. I guess when you get desperate you go to all new time lows to try to get a vote. Don't worry after the election you can crawl back to your home state where many trucks can't even afford to register there trucks in your state because registrations for commercial trucks have been raised so high nice job Obama.

For Pete's sake, let's start talking issues and stop bickering about who has more toys or houses or whatever than I have. Has anyone ever thought about what the people want. If the party hacks ON BOTH SIDES would stop spinning everything and get back to the important issues, such as national security, the economy, education and healthcare, people would be better informed and able to make a choice for the best overall qualified individual. Neither one of these men running for president are the perfect candidate, but one is better in my opinion. And race had nothing to do with my decision!

Rich   September 21st, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Since when does buying American or Foreign cars matter when selecting the president of the country? The fact is, the American car industry has used government subsidies to continue a practice of producing poor cars and taking advantage of the US taxpayers. Since I own non-American cars does that make me unAmerican or intelligent? I vote "intelligent." Until American car companies can make a decent car and do it competitively, why should we support them? OPen markets allow people to decide based on price and quality. I respect McCain for buying high quality cars, speaks to his ability to understand performance. The Prius and Lexus are both top selling car brands in the US. The Ford Escape is crap. Based on this article, I would vote for McCain.

Charlotte   September 21st, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Chicago Politics at its best. Who cares how many cars they own? They probable furnish them for there help to drive. I'm sure they have full-time employees. How many employees do I have, Zero. I do own three cars, a motorhome and a boat. Did the McCains buy them overseas, or did they buy them from a dealer in the USA? I have a Toyota, I bought it from our local guy, Bingham Toyota. We have a VW dealer here and a Honda dealer as well. They hire Americans as mechanics, they hire salespeople who are Americans, they advertise in local papers and on local TV stations. Does this mean we should not buy a new car unless it is American? Wouldn't that put a lot of people out of work? Toyota has a factory here in the States don't they? Mine was made here.

CM   September 21st, 2008 6:26 pm ET

So McCain misrepresents what he owns again. This should come as a surprise how?

Amazing people still follow this guy blindly.

Barney   September 21st, 2008 6:25 pm ET

Here we go even AGAIN —

McCain and the Republican National Committee have repeatedly cited 94 alleged votes by Obama to bolster their argument.

Factcheck.org, a non-partisan project of the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center, pieced through records to determine just what these 94 votes were. Key findings:

-23 were against proposed tax cuts
-7 were "for measures that would have lowered taxes for many, while raising them on a relative few, either corporations or affluent individuals"
-11 were to increase taxes on people making more than $1 million a year, to help fund programs such as Head Start, school nutrition, or veterans' health care
-53 were votes on budget resolutions or amendments that "could not have resulted by themselves in raising taxes," though many "were clear statements of approval for increased taxes"
- The total includes multiple votes on the same measures

Annenberg says a close look at the record reveals that Obama has "voted consistently to restore higher tax rates on upper-income taxpayers but not on middle- or low-income workers."

Verdict:

Mr. C.   September 21st, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Hrm…So McCain is undermining autoworkers in America because he and his family have bought a Lexus, a Toyota, a Honda, and a Volkswagon. In case they weren't aware, if they bought a Toyota or a Honda in the U.S. more than likely it came from a manufacturing facility in the United States which hires American workers. Lexus, a division of Toyota does not have a production facility in the U.S. but instead, it is in Ontario, Canada. Volkswagon, while it also does not currently have a production plant in the U.S. is actually trying to place one in Chattanooga if I am not mistaken. And how could someone who has paid more to the American auto industry with 13 cars produced in America be undermining it?

While I may not support McCain, this is a non-story and somewhat misleading. Aside from that, who is going to be voting on how many cars people have anyway? I know not I, despite the fact I, even though I, like Obama, only has one car which I share with my wife.

christine   September 21st, 2008 6:22 pm ET

He probably did buy American most of his life. In addition, he also bought imports. So what? When Detroit can produce something as attractive and useful as a Prius they can stop complaining. How many American cars are partially built in Mexico or Canada? The US automakers have far bigger worries than what the President or Presidential candidates are driving; this is such a non-issue.

Did they say the McCains' own thirteen cars? Talk about being elitists. John McCain couldn't remember how many houses he and his wife owned and now it is reported that the McCains' own at least thirteen cars.

And McCain tells the reporters that overall the American economy is pretty solid.

People please wise up about John McCain and realize that he is just another George W. Bush who wants the rich to get richer and the poor poorer.

I know how I am voting in November and I am casting my vote for BarackObama/Joe Biden. I certainly hope the rest of you get it and do the same.

Thanks.

Pat from Florida   September 21st, 2008 6:21 pm ET

I came to this blessed country many years ago from Argentina, one of the only countries that print money to solve its problems, have no justice, and greed in the government is the biggest.
I thought that USA was a country of law, fair game and a country of opportunities and like the ones we (with my husband) lived under the Clinton administration (and I still think so).
Yesterday I saw several youtube clips from the first Presidential Debate between Bill Clinton and Bush father in '92 and I think we are watching now the same movie again! See it for yourself!
Forget the experience, race, gender, judgement, and everything else. What the republicans do not understand is that this is a philosophy and policies issue. They don't know how to govern (except for Reagan). We see this time and time again!
WE CANNOT TAKE THIS ANYMORE!!! We gave the opportunity to them for 8 years! What did they do? They let our country go to the drain!!
We need a democrat to heal our country again, put some sanity and fiscal responsibility and change the view that other countries around the world have about USA …
Do you really (in your hearts) think that Mc Cain will change or make something different from Bush? Do you really believe it??
That is why I will proudly cast my vote for Barack Obama!!

Patricia,

Charlotte   September 21st, 2008 6:21 pm ET

Did the McCains buy them overseas, or did they buy them from a dealer in the USA? I have a Toyota, I bought it from our local guy, Bingham Toyota. We have a VW dealer here and a Honda dealer as well. They hire Americans as mechanics, they hire salespeople who are Americans, they advertise in local papers and on local TV stations. Does this mean we should not buy a new car unless it is American? Wouldn't that put a lot of people out of work? Toyota has a factory here in the States don't they? Mine was made here.

Here we go again – lies lies and more lies – deceit.

Add to that the INSULT that his VP pick and her family members are dodging subpoema's – a republican initiated investigation in ALASKA before she was picked as his VP running mate.

We don't need this AGAIN.

We need to take our country back for US. We need someone that believes the constitution means everyone. The republicans just continue dodging, lying, and deceiving. NO MORE. We've had that crap for 8 years. NO MORE.

Isn't there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?

Maria Mc Donald   September 21st, 2008 6:18 pm ET

That just shows you what a LIAR McCain is. He just married Cindy because her family is rich. Left his sick wife, cheated on her for years. Said in 1998 that Chelsea Clinton is ugly. He comes up with lies about Obama left and right, and Obama constantly has to defend himself. McCain lies to American people, plants the seed in her head, as you might say, and they believe it. That just shows his character!!!!! Now he parades the annoying Palin all over the place, like she is a prized Pig (with lipstick). I can't stand that voice of hers and her unintelligent bulls@, she keeps repeating the same thing on the campaign, the same she babbled on at the convention. People are talking about Palin so much, because, she is literally a breath away from being president. McCain doesn't look so healthy to me, I don't think he will live 4 more years (which is reality, I hope he will) but we have to be realistic here. Then we end up with a douchbag like Palin. Her husband Todd might be called "First Dude" he is more likely "First Dull" he doesn't seems so bright either, like his wife. If you saw Greta Van Susteren Interview with him, it speaks for itself.
Whe she was asked about the SNL with Tina Fey playing her, she (Palin) responded, she had the volume down on the TV, so she only seen the visual, but that she dressed up as Tina Fey on Halloween. PLEASE, I bet she never even heard of Tina Fey before, and I doubt she had the volume turned down. The woman lies about EVERYTHING, even something small.
If McCain/Palin win the election, American are more stupid then I thought. The same reason they elected Bush Again in 2004.

CindyN--PA   September 21st, 2008 6:16 pm ET

McCain seesm to have to problem lying to any degree to get elected.
Seems like McCain isnt accountable for his own words to any degree.
This country is going to be in very bad financial shape in the coming year and even into the next year. He is out of his leauge when it comes to the economics of this country. People better vote in a Democrat, because we need a Democrat in office to help with our fiscal problems that we face. People are just not getting this crisis.

What a stupid report. So what if he has 13 cars? And he didn't lie. If 11 of his cars are American, he certainly has regularly bought American all his life. His family has more money. So what?? It's nothing to be ashamed of. This is not a socialistic country – as much as the Democrats would like to change it. I supposed if Bloomberg were running, there would be stupid reports about his vast wealth. At the end of the day, we need the best person for the job and how many cars he owns says nothing about experience and potential.

Lets focus on the issues.

I own 2 Toyotas and I'm proud of that. Proud that I'm American enough to make an informed, smart consumer choice. And if McCain owns 11 American cars and 2 foreign cars, he has still supported the American auto industry more than Obama's 1 American auto purchase. But I guess the larger point is that McCain doesn't know his own self well enough to avoid being a liar. And that's a good point too.

McCain said he only buys cars MADE in the USA. Many foreign car companies have factories in the US and the workers at these facilities are Americans. So they are made in the USA by Americans.

And when was the last time Obama drove his hybrid? Seems like on the news they only show him driving around in gas guzzling limos and SUVs.

Obama's campaign sounds pretty deperate to me.

Republican Supporters in the Dark   September 21st, 2008 6:08 pm ET

McCain is trying to sell himself to the American people as a regular Joe, which he IS NOT!!!. John McCain was ALWAYS for deregulation in the financial sector and was more interested in protecting the interest of the wealthy – that's his party's mantra. John McCain is no 'man of the people'. John McCain belongs to the 20% (or less) of Americans, who own 80% of the wealth of the country, and he and the Republicans want to keep it that way. WAKE UP AMERICA. How much more lies will you buy from the Republicans (John McCain will continue the failed policies of Pres. Bush and the Republican party). John McCain is out of touch with most of America. He wants to be President because it is a long held ambition, not because he cares deeply about the American people. And by the way, he is not the only POW in America – that does not give him or anyone else the right to be President.

Some people are still so racist that they can't vote for a half white/black man to be the best choice for this presidency…it is sickening they are going to vote against their interrest…again…and will be the ones who will be ignored by the elite republicans…come blue collar people and independents…is a man who owns 3 cars is in touch with us and who own 7 or so houses is about us??? and says he doesn't own foreing cars. If McCain should be our leader then why didn't he have people use his cars to drive some displaced hurricane Ike victims to some of his eight houses? This would be real leadership. But no he is McSame…doesn't really care about anyone but the rich elite. Go home(s) McCain if you can remember how to get there.

WHITE MALE HOCKEY DAD OBAMA/ BIDEN '08

Seattle Sue   September 21st, 2008 6:04 pm ET

McCain is less truthful than George W. Bush and that is not a record to be proud of. McCain/Palin can not tell the truth.

King   September 21st, 2008 6:04 pm ET

McCain is the most dishonest man in politics since Nixon.

voter   September 21st, 2008 6:03 pm ET

Dems should stop talking about the foolishness of McCain's 13 cars and follow Obama's 7 point plan regarding the bailout. This is not the time to discuss how many cars and homes McCain has. The dems should fight the republicans who want to provid money to the ceos of companies that got us in this economic mess. Main street should be allowed to re-finance their homes to avoid foreclosure and oversight should be included in the bill. Dems need to stand up for the average joe and not cave to the republicans.

Who cares! I make less than $40,000.00 per year and own 7 cars! 5 being collector cars! I will vote for McCain in 08!

Kjetil   September 21st, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Do McCain ever tell the truth? Is it straighttalking to tell lie after lie?

Shane   September 21st, 2008 6:02 pm ET

OK…I'm a Democrat…and to be honest…I don't mind that he has 13 cars and that not all of them are American made! These issues are small compared to the big issues like the lies…the "moral" issues not to mention Palin and her lack of any type of experience. There are a lot worse thing than cars…I'm just sayin'.

Roger   September 21st, 2008 6:01 pm ET

So, Obama having his own jet isn't out of touch with average americans. Average Americans don't wear empty suits.

anyonmous   September 21st, 2008 6:01 pm ET

(CNN) — Democrats eager to portray John McCain as out of touch with average Americans and as a flip-flopper seized on a report Sunday the Arizona senator and his wife, Cindy, own more than a dozen cars, including several foreign-made automobiles.

In a quickly-arranged conference call organized by the Democratic National Committee, United Auto Worker Union President Ron Gettelfinger — an Obama supporter — said the registration records show McCain is not being truthful with Americans and undermine autoworkers.

"But it turns out that John McCain wasn't being straight with the people of Detroit, or the state of Michigan, or our country as a matter of effect," adding later, "The American auto industry and the American voters deserve a president who will be straight with them.”

mcain is such a fraud that i am sick of reading about him. how can the american public be so blind as to not see thru this deceit?
mccain has lied so many times that he can't remember what and when he says things. i am shocked that he has any republicans supporting him with all the bull he throwing out.
i can't stand to look at him or listen to him on TV. i will be so glad when the election is over and we have a new leader to get us back on track with the world. obama/biden 2008

I wish he would have been asked how many cars he owned.

McCain: I think twelve or thirteen… um…. there are investment cars….. from Japan… um… would it be cool if I have an aide answer that question…. he knows how many things I own better than me.

haha YIKES!!

emily   September 21st, 2008 6:00 pm ET

WOW!!! Can McCain go any low???

Independent Voter   September 21st, 2008 6:00 pm ET

Why am I not surprised? McCain is really just too out of touch with the everday American that gets up in the morning and tries to make an honest living. I am disgusted!

Donna   September 21st, 2008 6:00 pm ET

The McCain campaign's latest slogan is "Country First." This is an example of how empty his rhetoric is.

As for his running mate, would Sarah Palin treat the country like she treats Alaska? Taking per diems intended for travel to stay in her own home? Using personal email to avoid transparency in government? It certainly has not been "Alaska First" and there is no reason to believe that her statements have any more subtance than do McCain's.

mitchell   September 21st, 2008 6:00 pm ET

every fact check cnn does mccain is lying and misleading. why do folks like presidents who consistently lie to win?

The World is Watching.   September 21st, 2008 5:59 pm ET

Americans, McCain Does not care about us. It is all about him and the family, but many Americans will not see it because of racism(Fear) towards Obama.

D&D   September 21st, 2008 5:59 pm ET

McCain had his way, he won't do much for America! Unless to be blind and/or deaf, there is no way not to see t!

There is only one choice in this election, whether you like it or not, that's choice, it's Obama/Biden ticket!

God bless America!

Steve   September 21st, 2008 5:57 pm ET

John McCain has always been out of touch with the needs of the American people. He 'drives his cars' on the wrong side of the reality road. One thing I am MOST sure of, the more of the same… is proved every day when I hear John and Sarah copy the 'phrases' from the Obama ticket… They picked up and began using the word 'change'.. 'this is the moment' and '…got it right… he got it wrong…' and there are many other examples. Point of this is… Let me 'drive it home' in my vehicle.. John needs to stay off all roads because he's on a road to nowhere…

Meka   September 21st, 2008 5:57 pm ET

MCCAIN=BUSH

EXTREME LIARS!

AMERICA HAS HAD ENOUGH OF MCCAIN'S B S!

Scott   September 21st, 2008 5:57 pm ET

How in the world can someone with 13 cars, and more homes then HE CAN COUNT, be responsible for the economy at a time like this. If he understood the economy, which he has gone on record and said he does not understand, I would be more apt to not be so much against him. However in a week where he said that the FUNDAMENTALS, NOT THE PEOPLE, ARE STRONG how can anyone in their right mind think of voting for him? Even the right wing is starting to turn on him. Should we even take McCain seriously anymore?

Pennsylvania Mary   September 21st, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Democrats are ridiculous people

Nickel and Dime Me   September 21st, 2008 5:56 pm ET

LIES, LIES AND MORES LIES PEOPLE WAKE UP IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT FOR A PRESIDENT A CHRONIC LIAR. DON'T KNOW THE FOREST FROM THE TREES.

BJGT   September 21st, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Yeah… but Obama is still the "elitist", right? McCain is the most hypocritical, lying, sleaziest politician I've ever witnessed. I'm still dumbfounded why anyone with the least bit of intelligence would vote for him. Do the Republicans even deserve another chance after the mess that Bush made in the last 8 years? No, of course not. What is the real answer? People just won't vote for a black man, is that it? That must be the answer since Obama is far and away the more qualified person for the job.

mitchell   September 21st, 2008 5:54 pm ET

elitist

hurriCAIN PALIN   September 21st, 2008 5:54 pm ET

do anything – say anything – win at all costs – pandering dems

Alex   September 21st, 2008 5:54 pm ET

why are dems going after him on cars? Republicans don't care… all they have to keep repeating POW POW POW POW and everything just fades away… thats the truth
