SNL mocks McCain-Palin for second-straight week

Darrell Hammond portrayed McCain on SNL Saturday night.

(CNN) - Saturday Night Live, the longtime NBC sketch comedy show that has arguably wielded significant influence this presidential election season, skewered the McCain-Palin ticket for the second straight week in a row Saturday.

In the show’s opening sketch, a Darrell Hammond impersonation of John McCain is shown in an advertising studio recording his tagline for a bevy of negative - and ridiculously false - campaign ads. The ads level such allegations as Barack Obama wants healthcare coverage for the entire universe (including Osama bin Laden) and supports tax cuts for pedophiles.

The sketch also takes a dig at McCain's age, portraying the Arizona senator as unfamiliar with digital recording technology (After he is told it is a new technology McCain says, "Like 8-track?")

Politico reported Saturday the sketch was actually conceived by former SNL writer Al Franken, the current Democratic challenger to Norm Coleman's Minnesota Senate seat.

SNL has already proven its ability to crystallize emerging campaign narratives this election cycle, widely credited with raising a general perception the media was in love with Obama during the primary election season in a series of sketches last winter. SNL's portrayal of Sarah Palin last weekend also synthesized several questions raised about the Alaska governor's readiness to serve as vice president.

With a weekly viewership stretching into the millions that reaches a swath of (mostly young) voters who aren't as closely following the ins and outs on the campaign trail, SNL has a clear ability to shape general perceptions of both presidential tickets in the final stretch of the race for the White House.

Responding to SNL's depiction of McCain, spokesman Tucker Bounds said, "Saturday Night Live is funny, Barack Obama showing no sign of life or leadership during a banking crisis is not funny."

Way to go SNL! It seems that more and more people are joining the cause to avoid four more years of the same. One question though? Why does CNN always use terms like 'skewer', 'slams', 'rips', and 'bashes' to describe when someone speaks against something? This isn't a wrestling match.

But will SNL skewer Obama/Biden in the same way. What was it I learned in journalism school...there was something about equal time as I recall.

Daily McCain mocks himself with his changed positions, his incoherent positions and his outright lies.

McCain does not have the temperment to lead this country which requires a steadty, thoughtful leader.

Now will the MSM start asking them some real questions about their inaccurate ads as well? Or will they let them give a one-liner and spin into an attack on Obama as usual?

I am not surprised; NBC has been the Obama HQ for over 18 months now.

I like to know when they are going to talk about Obama’s deceitful ad in Spanish language.

CNN why don’t you call Obama on it and call it a lie?

IT is sad when SNL and The View do better reporting than CNN, MSNBC and the rest. REALLY SAD!!!

Did you hear that one of McCain's main economic surrogates said that they were not for firing SEC chair Chris Cox? Wasn't this their big plan on WEDNESDAY. John McCain has lost his mind. Wow!!

Gotta say, I think they actually went pretty easy on McCain, implying he's so out of touch he doesn't even realize how despicable his ads have gotten. Personally, I think he really has gotten that despicable.

That sketch used comedy to reveal a truth – now that's satire! A lot of us have wondered how McCain could possibly go along with those ridiculous and negative ads. He has to either be as clueless as SNL portrayed him, or he has to have abandoned any integrity he ever had and truly supports those lie-filled ads.

Darrell Hammond was spot on as Senator McCain. The voice of sarcasm was a clever touch, too. Unfortunately for McCain SNL sees his ads for what they are: outrageous lies.

It is plan and simple, McCain lacks the intelligence, the judgement and even the education to be President of this country...how can the most powerful nation in this world elect such a clumsy and convoluted speaker who seems to be unaware of the issues of the day? How many times are we going to know what McCain said only when his campaign clarifies and lies about what he said? Is this the best we can do? Adn that Lady that can see Russia from her window...that is all it takes to be president of USA???????

So basically, CNN, your saying that everyone will vote for Obama based on what they see on SNL??? Are you that desperate? I'd like to think that Americans are more intellectual and that you had more faith in the younger generation..obviously you don't. Obviously you are just as "out of touch" with the younger crowd as McCain is and this sketch is right on. Thanks for clarifying THAT.
