Sen. Biden took aim at McCain on foreign policy and national security Monday.
Sen. Biden took aim at McCain on foreign policy and national security Monday.

BALTIMORE, Maryland, (CNN) - One day after John McCain questioned Barack Obama’s judgment to be commander-in-chief in front of the conference of the National Guard Association, Democratic VP nominee Joe Biden came to his defense in front of the same gathering Monday, hitting McCain on foreign policy and national security.

Biden also countered John McCain’s accusation that behind Barack Obama’s views “lies the ambition to be president.”

“No one party has a monopoly on virtue or good ideas,” said Biden. “We can question each other’s judgment, that’s what elections are all about but we have to stop questioning each other’s motives and each other’s patriotism.”

“We all put ‘country first,’” he added, borrowing the McCain camp’s slogan. “When John and I send our sons to war, they don’t wear a Republican flag or a Democratic flag. They wear the American flag.”

McCain’s son Jimmy, a Marine lance corporal, has served in Iraq. Biden’s son Beau, Delaware’s attorney general and a member of the state’s National Guard, will be deploying there this fall.

Like McCain’s Sunday remarks, Biden’s lines on patriotism and the American flag got a rousing reception from the crowd. The crowd was silent during his attacks on the Republican nominee.

The senator raised eyebrows among reporters when he veered off his prepared remarks toward the end, replacing short, punchy lines ending with “John was wrong, Barack was right,” with lengthier arguments that referenced his own experience and understanding.

“Whoa!” exclaimed Biden after saying that McCain had asserted before the Iraq war that there was no history of conflict between Sunnis and Shias. “One of my problems is maybe I read too much history. There’s an overwhelming history, an overwhelming history ladies and gentlemen, 1200 years of it, of clashes between Sunnis and Shias.”

“You want to know where Bin Laden is, come back to Afghanistan with me,” he later added. “I can tell you where they are. John says he’ll follow them to the gates of hell. You don’t have to go to hell. Just go to Pakistan. Just go to that area. That superhighway of terror that exists between Afghanistan and Pakistan.”

The original text also ended with the argument that in order to have a strong military, there needs to be a strong economy. Forgoing the planned conclusion, Biden left out the news of the day and a chance to promote the plan Obama was introducing in a “major” economic speech.

Biden heaps praise on the National Guard at every campaign rally and Monday spoke glowingly of the domestic and international work the National Guard has done, and pledged to increase medical and economic support in light of increased service burdens in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Barack and I are here, we are going to set this straight,” he said.

Man, the McCain drumbeat is getting more and more desperate. The campaign went from being poorly run to being the most dishonest, sleazy attack and non-issue campaign in history. Now the guy looks so confused and exhausted it's looking like he might die before the election. His supporters have got to be feeling pretty stupid right about now. They are looking more and more like the Goldwater crowd of 1964.

I understand McCain and Obama are going to have a traditional, open-style, give-and-take debate format, while Palin prefers the George Bush "soft-toss" style of debate. Too bad because Biden would have excoriated her in the open forum!

Mr. Biden , Does the word National (in National Guard ) mean nothing? It sure meant something when Bush was in it. These soldiers are husbands and wifes and fathers and mothers. No body cares about this. Can you tell me that this is an all volunteer army when these people signed up for the (National Guard).?

I registered democratic voters at a local festival last weekend across the street from a table registering republicans. We were constantly busy registering and selling lawn signs. The repubs couldn't even give away their signs. I noticed a big poster of Palin on their table but nothing with McCain. Guess who's running for president. We need a different direction asap. McCain is looking more and more out of touch with the world and Palin is just plain crazy. Look up her stand on rape. Women in her state, under her tenure, are required to pay for rape exams to the tune of $1000. How's that for an ownership society. Gather and pay for your own evidence. Sigh.

FreeNLovIt   September 22nd, 2008 7:55 pm ET

From 2000 to 2004, we went from DUMB to DUMBER as a country. If McCain gets elected, we'll all be LOST IN TRANSLATION. It doesnt look good when he goes through his senior moments.

Right now, we CANNOT AFFORD a PREZ with lost VISION.

Good luck to all candidates. I am an Obama supporter but I don't believe in the hatred I read in the blogs and especially with the racial factor. I hope that Americans are so stupid to let race interfer with prosperity and the good of the nation. You saw it Germany. I just think that people overseas will be more open to dealing with Obama than McCain. They haven't forgot the phrase Bomb Iran. You better believe. What there wondering is who is next. As for Palin, truly a non-factor. The rest of the world is considering it a joke. Comedy. People favoring a 6 school degree earning Journalism degree over a Ivy League Columbia and Harvard(cum laude) graduate. A big insult to Harvard and the rest of the nation. ???????????? America what's up???

Obama supporters just don't get it!

Wealthy Americans, own businesses, or corporations and or invest in other businesses, and or corporations, which in turn creates jobs and lower prices for the rest of America.

If you raise taxes on the Wealthy:

They in turn will;

Stop investing in other businesses (so those businesses have to raise prices, and lay off their employees to balance their profits.

Raise the prices of their own products (if business owners) to balance their profits.

Lay off employees at their own businesses.

The wealthy want to stay WEALTHY, and will do what ever they have to do to sustain their life styles. Put yourself in a wealthy person’s position. What would you do if your taxes were raised? You would cut back where you can so you can continue living the life style you and your family are accustom to.

By trying to stick it to the wealthy, you will only be hurting yourself, your family, and your friends.

Obama supporters claim to be intelligent, educated people.

Prove it! Do your own research. Don't take the rest of us Americans down because you are too lazy to do any research, and would rather just be a follower!

Please, Joe who? It's funny how Obama/Biden want to sit and wait, like BIden has been doing for over 30 years and like Obama has been doing while people were trying to gain oversight over Fanny and Freddie. His attitude was sit, wait and collect more money. But guess what guys, you can't vote present when you're President. Make a decision for once in your life. Oh that's right, I forgot it's easier not to. Obama/Biden are looking to place blame, McCain/Palin want to take responsability.

For Tom in Delaware

If Biden is a stooge, than Bush Palin and Mccain must be the Three stooges.

Anyone who actually looks at the facts, and has enough pride to resent losing more than 4000 of our best soldiers over the obvious and blatant lies of the Bush Cheney administration, would never support MaCain for president.

McCain not only bought the lies he helped sell them, he not only ignored intelligence, he helped pursuade the military to invent it, he not only voted to support the war, but then he voted not to honestly fund it, and he still doesnt GET IT.

The real war is in danger of being permanently lost, Pakistan is increasingly less cooperative, Afghanastan is moving into chaos, and our Real enemy is simpply laughing at our idealogical incompetance.
In fact they really want Mccain to win because their biggest fear is that America wakes up, pushes out the extremist right in our own country, and actually puts our house in order, with real focus on Americans, and a real commitment to uniting our allies not insulting them.

The Bush McCain America will allow them to recruit even more terrorists, and become stronger because the very basis of the Republican parties world view makes it so easy to hate us.

That isnt patriotism ,it is flat out stupidity.

So WAKE UP AMERICA you do have one thing right, we need to wake up and i think it would be nice if you were one of the first to do that.

It is my greatest wish that the United States can end this hostility between the two political parties.

We are all Americans. We are all on the American side. The only difference is in the way each political party wishes to improve America.

It is time to end this bickering and start working together.

For working together there is no problem we can't solve.

Divided, there is no problem we can solve.

It is time to repair America.

I usuallt don't pay much attention to email reterick I get, but not trusting Obama very much this email that I recieved a number of times makes me wonder and I thought I would mention here as a reference, should it prove to be true. Suposedly this came from a excellent sources within the DNC:

On or about October 5th, Biden possibly will excuse himself from the ticket, citing health problems, and he will be replaced by Hillary. This is timed to occur after the VP debate on 10/2.

Biden remarks about questioning each other’s motives and each other’s patriotism. We will see, if this is true what possibly could his motives be....?

Susan   September 22nd, 2008 7:29 pm ET

I question McCain on his patriotism. e has turned this race into a free for all to fulfill hiw own ambitions just as he described in his book Faith of Our Fathers. No one is more of a hypocrite than John McCain in the election. He has turned his back on America and gotten in to bed with Big Oil and Corporations.

Poor Old Warrior   September 22nd, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Laura Bush stated on 09/01/08 that Palin’s experience as a mayor, qualified her for the Republican vice presidency.

Cindy McCain stated Sunday, 8/31/08 Palin had national security experience because Alaska was next to Russia.

QUESTIONS TO ALL THE MOTHER'S OF AMERICA'S CHILDREN

Are you willing to take a chance that the welfare and safety of your own children, may at sometime in the future be the responsibility of the Republican party that actually believes that anyone, male or female, with experience as a city council member and the mayor of a village of 9.000 for 8 of her 10 years of “executive” experience, actually qualifies the candidate for the top office in the land?

The same Republican party believes that the fact that the state, which has a total population of less than the city of Atlanta, and which she is the current governor of for all of 20 months, during which time she has already managed to create a cloud of suspicion for possibly abusing the power of her office. and is currently being investigated, is actually qualified for national security because the state she is the governor of is next to Russia?

No matter how you feel about the Democratic ticket at least the one with the lesser experience was ELECTED, and made a VP selection of someone who would bring balance to the ticket and provides some responsibility. The Republican VP was SELECTED by one man that actually believes the Republican statements and beliefs as outlined above.

You parents out there need to think long and hard about this ticket but more importantly about the Republican party which is apparently so welling to cater to the Far Right that the entire Republican party is willing to chance putting your own kids future in jeopardy, just so they can win an election?

How exactly is that considered "Country First"?

Anonymous, did you happen to notice that the American Military and American economy are at the brink of collapse due to Bush's sheer incompetence?

Anonymous, did you notice that we are unable to supply our military effectively in two small theaters of insurgent warfare?

Anonymous did you notice how Bush has turned the whole world against America, and that no one else really much cares if the Russians steam their warships into Venezuela harbors?

Latin America is probably glad the Russians have arrived and are checking an increasingly unstable America, that now tortures people and launches illegal wars, since that kinda sounds like what NAZI Germany did back in the late Thirties, and Latin America is worried America may invade them.

Paris   September 22nd, 2008 7:08 pm ET

I like three examples of how OBAMA put his country first please.

This is what I have:
1-Obama’s mentor (Wright) attacked America, OBAMA refused to denounce him until Wright called OBAMA a Politian. Country second.

2-Obama was against the surge because it was unpopular to be for it, although it was a huge mistake for America to leave Iraq at the time. Country second.

3-Obama decided to sit on a board with a terrorist (William Ayers). Country second.

4-Obama forced Hillary to back out of the protest against Iran, Iran hates America. Country second, partisan politics first.

5-Obama spoke in front of 200,000 in Germany never praised this nation. Country second.

6-Obama chose Biden over Hillary, undeniably Hillary was the better choice for America. Country second.

The records are to the contrary Mr. Biden.

This is odd CNN.

The post by "The smartest people will vote..." gets posted, and mine does not.

Surely mine is less offensive since I 'm not all inclusive in my insults and mine is more accurate since Sarah has been called a liar by Time Magazine no less.

Why does mine get hung up in moderation limbo and this other ignorant one does not?

bob   September 22nd, 2008 7:07 pm ET

What's funny is that Palin said she could see Russia from Alaska. If she gets in office we may have to look at it from Canada because she is talking about having war with Russia. hmm, Iraq,Iran, and Afghanistan makes 4 countries that the McCain administration would have our boys fighting. Can we afford that? We need a new person that can diplomatically resolve issues intelligently instead of resorting to war first. You will never gain respect of country leaders by trying to bully them into going your way and your few allies will only go along with you out of fear. When will the American people wake up!

Peter (CA)   September 22nd, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Hey Latinos..

And what would McCain do for Latinos? This is the guy who was for illegal alien reform, helped author the bill, and then said he would not even vote for his own bill instead of upsetting the conservatives.

McCain has sold out. His only constituents now are big business, big oil, and anyone who can't stand the idea of not having a Republican in the White House.

At least Bush could speak some Spanish. How much did he do for you?

People make no sense   September 22nd, 2008 7:06 pm ET

This is a message to all criminals. Palin & the republicans have shown you the way. American laws are a joke. You can site executive Palin priviliage and tear that subpeona up. The American government has shown you that they are partisan to you so do whatever you want criminals because you don't have to worry about the subpeonas. Be a criminal like Palin.

Palin supports criminal activities. Palin is just like her daddy Bush. Executive liars.

WELL, WELL said Sen. Biden.

It's funny how Sen. McCain wants to politicize "patriotism" when it's CONVENIENT FOR HIM!! This coming from a POW is truly SHAMEFUL!!

My two sons and three daughters fighting in IRAQ right now is NOT wearing a REPUBLICAN or DEMOCRAT Uniform. They ARE wearing an "AMERICAN" UNIFORM!!

McCain is just "clueless" yet again!

Kate   September 22nd, 2008 7:05 pm ET

This shows that Joe Biden can go OFF SCRIPT and still be knowledgeable and insightful. Palin has to read line for line and they can't even let her debate like the rest of the candidates. Talk about special treatment.

Oh, Please. Shut up Joe.
You are part of the problem!
You are a 36 year politician!
Get over yourself. You've put yourself first, as with the rest of the do-nothing Congress that helped create the mess we're in.
And your boy Obama is sooooooo naive to think he has the experience to run the country? How's that going to work? He has no experience in education, health care, national security, foreign policy, social security, elder care, military, judicial, executive.
He's going to have to rely on career politicians like yourself.
Sounds familiar, doesn't it? George W Bush all over again!

I think all of this coming down on Sarah Palin is crap from wann be
Americans that don't know how to be real Americans. Obama is a good man I believe but McCain is better qualified to lead this country and keep it free. These problems we have now were not created by
democrats or republicans but by the times and everyone. What we need at a time like this a President that will protect America because she is ready to fall america and fall she will if we do not have someone in there that will not turn his back on America and truly fight for America. That is what matters most right now all of our other problems we will work through but let us keep America free and strong. That is what matters most now a free America not a middle east and Russia run America. Obama has some good things for America true and some bad so does McCain. But our biggest concern should be keeping America free as long as we can. Trust me you will not like the new America that is coming if we do not keep it free from the middle east and russia. The best thing for this country would be is if McCain and Obama were one but they are not. McCain leave Social Security alone Obama work with McCain in keeping America free. You all complain about the most stupid things I ever heard of. This country
remaining free and Social Security left alone and not drain it better
health care and jobs thats what everyone really wants. do not sell
our country to the highest bidder or turn our back on our enemies
who would like nothing better than to see America weak Obama in
defense and Social Security bankrupt McCain. We are in the final stage be careful very careful who you put in office. GOD BLESS AMERICA AGAIN PLEASE.

George W. Bush and the GOP have squandered the great financial surpluses that were available at the beginning of the president's term; lied us into the wrong war at the cost of thousands of American and Iraqi lives, billions of dollars, and inspired a whole new terrorist network with “Al Qaeda in Iraq” as if Al Qaeda, itself, wasn’t enough. On the home front, Bush and the GOP deregulated the nation's financial institutions into bankruptcy. The American taxpayer, those who voted for him and those who didn't, will pick up the tab. Is this where so-called red and blue states will finally see purple? Of course, Bush will leave all of this to the next administration as he and Cheney retire to the oil billions generated while they were in office. This appears to have been the plan. Dig a hole so deep, the Democrats, who have historically taken the White House following Republican fiscal calamity, will be stuck struggling to fill it. As such, planned programs and services will suffer. Then, four years later, hoping American voters will have forgotten who is responsible for this mess, Republicans will parade a series of grinning candidates who will claim to have the solutions. Sadly, too many of us will have indeed forgotten, and this ridiculous and aggravating process will begin all over again.

America, tie a purple string around your finger and show the politicians you won't forget. Remember that McCain has supported the policies that we will spend our lives paying for. Remember that McCain has squandered any integrity that he was believed to have had with a vicious and deceitful presidential campaign. Remember the obvious cynicism in choosing Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate. In promoting his own experience during the Republican primaries he said, "I wasn't Mayor for a short period of time. I wasn't Governor for a short period of time..." Yet, that is exactly who Palin is, and she is exactly who McCain apparently believes is ready for the presidency should he be unable to serve. Clearly, country has not come first for John McCain in a very long time. But, looking at McCain’s rise in the polls, it appears that you certainly can fool a lot of the people a lot of the time.

One way or the other, for better or worse, it's time to roll up our sleeves. We've got work to do.

onelove   September 22nd, 2008 6:54 pm ET

Latino's for McCain, if you honestly think McCain is going to help your people then you aren't following what the MAJOR newspaper's have been reporting for weeks. McCain is going to help the wealthy. Do you have know what his policies are? I've been to McCains website and I actually read them.

Let's start with $2500.00 to $5000.00 in tax credits for health benefits. Think long and hard on this, okay. A tax credit means you get something after spending your money first. If you have a family how far is $5,000.00 going to get you? Most of the Hispanics in my neighborhood would be hard pressed to come up with this kind of money

Stop these silly oneliners, research, and educate yourself on FACTS AND POLICIES.

bob   September 22nd, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Palin is having a hissy fit because she is so desperate to be VP she accuses Obama and Biden of attacking her family. If that is so, then how come there's no newspaper or any TV network coverage reporting this? If you are going to make accusations, have a creditable example. She didn't even elaborate because there is nothing to elaborate. She sounds like my 4 year old granddaughter when she doesn't get her way. That's good because maybe the sensible mature people will out number the knot heads and vote for Obama 08.

independent   September 22nd, 2008 6:53 pm ET

No doubt, media loves any liberal candidate , especially Obama.
80% of media seems to be favouring Obama-Biden all the way.

Yet, McCain-Palin are not very far behind.

Going by the state of affairs, it should have been a clean-sweep for Obama-Biden, but not happening.

What is the reason ?

Campaign tactics like Republicans claiming that they are more patriotic then Democrats may have helped elect George Bush twice but it has left this country bitterly divided and cost Bush and the whole GOP their integrity and respectability.
McCain/Palin with the help of Steve Schmidt are trying to divide our country again.
They don't care if they rip our nation in half so long as they get the slightly bigger piece.
Well it might work but this time with the help of all those newly registered voters and disenchanted republicans it might just backfire.
And that would be justice!!

I have followed Joe Biden's career for many years, since his 1988 Presidential campaign. And yes, Mr. Biden sometimes outs his foot in his mouth but I surely can relate more to him as an honest, down to earth for the people type of person than McCain/Pallin. All you have to do is some research.

He resigned his 1988 Campaign because of accusations of plagiarism in speech he used several times citing the proper author in each and every time except this once. But rather than create a scandal and distraction he decided to resign his run for the Presidency.

Now that is an honorable man!!

Unlike these two deceitful, dishonest, lying, shameful, cay anything, do anything to win candidates, McCain/Palin. I sorry, NO I’m not sorry, they disgust me. “Country First”, my backside. If anyone realy believes that these to will change anything except for how much more the rich will get if they win, then you will have no one to blame but your selves.

One of Biden's characteristics I most admire is his ability to read, retain and use his knowledge. Biden is good on his feet and deftly handles subjects with facts. You did a good job Joe.

Looking forward to the VP debates when Palin will talk about telling Congress "No Thanks." and "I put the jet up for sale on eBay (but let's not talk about the fact it didn't sell)". and "I can see Russia from my house so I'm ready on Day 1 to run this country."

Joe, did you and Barack notice the Russian military moving in ships to a certain anti-American country in South America today? You did pick up on their joint military exercises they did in Venezuela in the past couple of weeks with their air force as well. Yes? The status of our economy means nothing if the Russians decide to park their nuclear weapons on our doorsteps. What plan do you and Barack have for this incursion of Russia's military into the Americas? Thought not, nothing unless the Socialist Obama plans on inviting their military here for his inauguation. America needs a real Commander-in Chief, America needs McCain.

Biden was right to respond harshly to McCain's vile claims that Obama is putting his political career before the best interests of the country. What a disgusting lie to spread.

And frankly, if we look at the behavior of the candidates, it seems more accurate to me to say that McCain is actually the one putting his political career before the interests of the country. He's flopped his stance on Bush's tax breaks for the rich which he used to oppose, he now supports offshore drilling (which will solve nothing regardless of growing popular support for it) which he used to oppose, and he selected a running mate that is completely unqualified and would literally be a disaster for this country if McCain gets elected and has to cede the reigns of the government to his VP. But he thinks she can help him win the election, so he's willing to ignore the fact that if he gets elected, she'll be completely incapable of actually doing the job. His choice of Palin is stunning in it's self-serving nature and complete disregard for what would be best for the country.

McCain should be ashamed of himself.

McCain's judgement is seriously flawed, look who he selected as his running mate. So, here we have a potential VP whose qualifications are flimsy at best, and an old man who is not robust physically or intellectually. Truly an odd couple who will bring nothing but more harm to this country if elected.

educated Ron   September 22nd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Biden is actually the best qualified to be president in regards to foreign policay and domestic issues. He is a perfect VP. Just doesn't have that charisma to be president from an election. He's the king of guy if president it would be fine with america. But america won't vote him into office on top of the ticket.

McCain is really in the mud on this race. It started with the britneyh spears add. Then he's gone down hill.

Not true...we all listen to all the presidential candidates and their running mates. I was an Independent leaning towards Obama...but McCain's pick of Palin just pushed me off the fence into his camp.

I respect McCain...just dont want him as my president. His pick of Palin showed me nothing but political postering and a complete lack of judgement.

I do not respect Palin views and don't get my wife started on that subject either. And frankly I'm leary of any public official who wont cooperate with an investigation concerning their office.

On 60 minutes, John McCain did not miss the chance to say that the longest he lived anywhere was Hanoi. I bet he has lived in that house in Arizona longer than he was in the Hanoi Hilton. He shouldn't cheapen that horrible experience by running it out there EVERY chance he gets.

Joe   September 22nd, 2008 6:37 pm ET

McCain's main argument during this election has been that Obama does not put his country first. I think the American people are starting to wake up and see McCain as another Bush-like politician. You love McCain, but you can't deny the fact that he is running a campaign predominantly based on attacking Obama. You can also say Obama attacks McCain, but if you are keen with your observation you can see that an attack from Obama usually comes right after an attack from McCain.

JD in Moraga, CA   September 22nd, 2008 6:37 pm ET

“We all put ‘country first,’” he added, borrowing the McCain camp’s slogan. “When John and I send our sons to war, they don’t wear a Republican flag or a Democratic flag. They wear the American flag.”

...we should ask Caribou Barbie about that, since she doesn't wear an American flag – she wears her big old "Alaska" pin instead...

Independents For McCain   September 22nd, 2008 6:36 pm ET

Excellent comments. Keep to the point of the National Guard and let Obama deliver his own speech on the economy. Too much info gets lost on the crowd. The only stooge in this race is Palin, a pretty puppet who is out of her league and only knows what the Republicans tell her to say, or not to say as in the case of Troopergate.

Republicans Grasping at Straws.   September 22nd, 2008 6:30 pm ET

I love how every time a website, newspaper, or TV station has the nerve to actually try and hold the Republicans responsible for their campaign of lies and vagueness, they're branded "leftist", "socialist", or some other kind of biased, and yet Fox News is "centrist" because they will only say the things about the Democrats that the wackos want to hear.

I guess if you believe in the truth, you're a lefty now. If you don't trust the government enough to give them complete, unchecked authority, you're a lefty.

Give 'em hell, Joe.

"No one party has a monopoly on virtue or good ideas." That one line is more truthful than anything Sarah Palin has said this entire campaign put together.

The only tactic that worked in the past for the Republicans is creating fear and demonizing their opponents. They have successfully done it to Kerry. I hope this time the American public will separate fiction from facts and vote based on merit not the fear Republicans try to create.

Derick from ATL   September 22nd, 2008 6:29 pm ET

I cant believe McCain will even dare to talk about someone else's ambition to be president.

On page 373 of John McCain's 2002 memoir Worth the Fighting For, you'll find the following quote:
"I didn't decide to run for President to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be President because it had become my ambition to be President. I was sixty-two years old when I made the decision and I thought it was my one shot at the prize."
^ a b McCain, John; Salter, Mark (2002). Worth the Fighting For. New York: Random House. ISBN 0-375-50542-3. p. 373.
Please please please don't vote for a man who only wants to win "the prize" of the presidency.

Go McCain!   September 22nd, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Joe, and exactly what percentage of the vote did you receive??

Jadie   September 22nd, 2008 6:28 pm ET

It looks like Ohio, Florida, Virginia and possibly Missouri will be deciding this election. It will be interesting to see if the people suffering in those states stick with what got them there or will they step in a new direction.

OBAMA/BIDEN

Kate Fergus   September 22nd, 2008 6:27 pm ET

With all the problems that the country faces, it is unbelievable that any rational person would vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin. Cronyism, partisanship and lack of understanding of today's world are not what the country needs. McCain and Palin have both continuously lied and been caught lying. McCain has been part of the Washington establishment that has caused the most disastrous problems in the last 60+ years.

We have enlisted and National Guard people who have sacrificed for their country and been left to struggle with their injuries both physical and emotional. Too many Vets have been left without the support they need when they return. In addition, too many families of these individuals are struggling to make ends meet while there loved ones are put in harms way. My God, these are the people who should be given all the support they need when they return and while they are away fighting. What the Republicans have done is shameful. They lied to go to war, equipped the troops poorly to fight, and left the families at home to struggle during their loved ones' absences.

Obama and Biden can and will do better.

FL4OB   September 22nd, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Obama/Biden want to WIN the right war on terror in Afghanistan and quit wasting valuable resources in the misguided debacle in Iraq.

After the last eight years, I do not trust Republicans with our national security. Sorry!

No way, no how, no McCain-Palin

Eight is enough!

Latinos For McCain!   September 22nd, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Latinos, Obama will not help you, he is simply using you to gain your votes!

If Obama is elected, the Latino population will be shifted to the back burner as he strives to help his fellow African Americans.

The Latino votes go to McCain!

Don't believe in Obama and his "false hope!"

John McCain's economic advisor said "THE U.S IS A NATION OF WHINERS"

Yolanda   September 22nd, 2008 6:26 pm ET

John McCain thinks way outside the box...no further outside the box....no, further out. He's completely out of touch with the common folk. .
OBAMA is our only hope.

David, Silver Spring, MD   September 22nd, 2008 6:25 pm ET

It's funny, if you look at Joe Biden, Sarah Palin, and Dick Cheney, the one that doesn't seem like the others is Joe Biden.

Where Palin and Cheney are nasty, bitter, extreme, secretive, and paranoid, Biden is open, friendly, and straightforward.

I'd rather live with the occasional Biden gaffe than the continuous mean-spirited cold, calculating evil of gun-toting Palin and Cheney.

Dj   September 22nd, 2008 6:25 pm ET

McCain's judgement can me summed up in two words: Sarah Palin.

KATHLEEN   September 22nd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

My husband said in watching McCain tither and tather on stage,
said, McCain is just TOO OLD!

Obama Biden 2008

Bulldog   September 22nd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

McCain and Palin are the biggest frauds in the world. They are accusing Obama and Biden lying about them when it's factually the exact opposite. McCain and Palin are now stooping so low they are lying about lying. Wow, now that's even worse than George Bush and Dick Cheney.

Zaley   September 22nd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Biden puts it the way it is....refreshing!
GO OBAMA/BIDEN.

Cam   September 22nd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

For tony above regarding all the major news outlets being for Obama.

Obviously this is a false statement, but if it were true, do you think it might be because Obama is the right choice and McCain is a bag of wind with an unqualified VP?

Peter (CA)   September 22nd, 2008 6:23 pm ET

"lies the ambition to be President"...

Sen. McCain, are you kidding us? Isn't that what has burned in you since Bush took away what was yours in 2000? Isn't that why you once preached against right wing intolerance but last year embraced it for an endorsement? Isn't that why you were against tortue, against drilling in ANWR, open to reforming laws on illegal aliens and have since gone 180 degrees on all of these stands??

I would hope that when someone runs for President, he wants to be President and is not running just to get out of the house (like Fred Thompson). But, the "ambition" you deride is coming from you. The ads full of lies and deceptions prove that.

Diana   September 22nd, 2008 6:23 pm ET

McCain and Palin will say and do anything to attract a vote.
OBAMA in 2008!

Karen - Missouri   September 22nd, 2008 6:22 pm ET

McCain and Palin and Bush have been "egging" Russia on. They WANT confrontation. McCain and his lobbyist friend from Georgia goaded Russia into action. So has Bush.

Obama and Biden are a great team. And they're right on when they tie our economy to national security. A strong economy is needed to remain strong.

If you ask me, Bush and McCain are planning something. Can't quite put my finger on it totally just yet...but it IS adding up.

it's almost like Bush and McCain (who are obvious oil company puppets) actually WANT this country to be weak.

Chloe   September 22nd, 2008 6:22 pm ET

I suppose Sarah in a bathing suit toting a shot gun was done to attract the redneck voters. I doubt anyone falls for this type of low-life politics.

OBAMA/BIDEN in 08

george   September 22nd, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Way to go Joe. The US Militaryy is neither Republican or Democrat. Republicans have a tendency to wrap themselves around the military as the only patriotic Americans. Support of the military comes from all taxpayers. In fact I feel that political campaigning should be forbidden at all military bases. John McCain feels that he has an entitlement to the Presidency because of his militarey service.

sal   September 22nd, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Biden is out there everyday-unafraid to talk to voters, the media, and to groups such as this. He walks the walk, and should be congratulated for his willingness to be up front and let America know him and what he stands for.

palin, the gop cretin, is to be congratulated for lying, evading an ethics probe, parading her kids around for attention, lying, making raped women pay for the rapekit evidence, hiding her official email, firing anyone who disagrees with her, lying, and being a miserable parent example. Oh, and let;'s not forget her COMPLETE FEAR OF THE MEDIA--WE DON'T NEED A CHICKEN FOR VEEP. SHE IS IN HIDING FROM THE MEDIA BECAUSE OF HER....WELL....HER SHEER IGNORANCE.
palin is a COWARD, PURE AND SIMPLE. A TURN AND RUN COWARD.

JOE BIDEN IS A COURAGEOUS AND GREAT MAN. HE IS NOT AFRAID OF THE MEDIA, AND HE RESPECTS OUR RIGHT TO KNOW WHO WE ARE ELECTING.

GO HOME, COWARD PALIN, AND HIDE IN ALASKA.

Joe Regis   September 22nd, 2008 6:21 pm ET

Biden is the real deal. Now the repubs are letting Palin do the dirty job of lying to the people. No matter where the lies are from, the people has had enough of the repubs.

I'll bet Cheney and pals will survive just fine

w/13 cars the price of gas must not bother McCain too much.

joel   September 22nd, 2008 6:20 pm ET

Paqlin's soul purpose of being the VP pick is to devert attention from the real issues of the day. Any time there is news about the Economy, something comes up about Palin's family, etc IT WON'T WORK America is smarter and better than that!

Lifelong Republican for Obama, Columbia, TN   September 22nd, 2008 6:20 pm ET

I really like Joe Biden. He knows what he is talking about I agree with everything he has to say with regard to military and foreign policy. Just because John McCain is vet does not mean that he knows what is best for our military women and men. I think that Obama's voting record is far more affirmative of vet issues than McCain's.

pa.joe   September 22nd, 2008 6:20 pm ET

The McCain/Palin campaign has taken name calling, smear attacks and lying to a whole new level.
Now I realize that in a political campaign there will be some truth stretching and name calling but what McCain/Palin have been doing this past few weeks is reprehensible.
Iraq is war based on lies, fought to protect our oil interests and big oil profits.
Calling folks who do not support it unpatriotic is something I'd expect from a guy like Vladamir Putin not a freedom loving American.

McSame, weren't you the one who said you wake up every morning wanting to be President? Did you say in your own book that you want to be president more than anything?

Anonymous   September 22nd, 2008 6:14 pm ET

Recently, Republicans have been trying to distance them selfs from their own party. I have never seen anything like it in my life. All Biden and Obama should do is keep reminding voters who got us into this mess. Keep reminding voters that Mccain is a nice guy, but in the end he is a Republican. Like i said before, Republican are lobbyists fooling the American people into thinking they are conservatives. Johm Maccain would have easily won if he admited his parties failures and promised the country a new and diffrent direction such as Obama has done with his party.

Silence Dogood   September 22nd, 2008 6:13 pm ET

“No one party has a monopoly on virtue or good ideas,” said Biden.

Funny that has been Obama's campaign: He is the One, the Only, the Savior, the Change. Obama does think HE has a monopoly on virtue. And he is a victim to boot!

I wonder this didn't stick in your throat when you said it.

Mel in GA   September 22nd, 2008 6:13 pm ET

CNN: PLEASE, I'M BEGGING YOU, PLEASE INVESTIGATE THESE WORDS FROM THE BAILOUT PLAN!!!   September 22nd, 2008 6:13 pm ET

CNN, Is this true? I hear that these 32 words are part of the "bailout" plan:

Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency.

Wow...

William   September 22nd, 2008 6:13 pm ET

The reason the economy is weak is not because of Iraq, it is because of the poor lending practices of mortgage companies and banks that they were forced into by the Clinton Administration in the 1990s. Obama wants to significantly downgrade the military so I absolutely believe John McCain will keep this country safer. Good to see one day go by without Biden "putting his foot in his mouth." The media defends this guy's comments by saying "That's just Joe being Joe," when we all know that the media would not afford any conservative that leniency if they made the same remarks.

Jayson   September 22nd, 2008 6:12 pm ET

Biden wants to talk about judgement and yet this is the same guy who was against freeing Kuwait after they were invaded by Iraq. He was for regime change until the regime change and invading Iraq. He also thinks that being rich and paying higher taxes make you more Patriotic. So I guess paying a lower percentage in taxes or no taxes makes you unpatriotic? The founding fathers never tried to make the rich pay higher taxes so I guess that makes them unpatriotic. Patriotic acts are acts that people choose to do on their own, not something they are forcecd into.

Jim in Raleigh   September 22nd, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Was it not McCain who wrote that his desire to run for President was simply because he just wants to be President? I would say that's nothing but blind ambition.

Moderate and Balanced   September 22nd, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Too bad CNN can't be balanced and unfair in its reporting. We hear the Liberal side...we see the CNN polls that favor Obama (but other polls show a statistical dead heat of course)...You don't hear about Obama requesting from the Iraqi president not to request troop withdrawal until after the election so he could continue his "end the war" campaign...you don't hear about Al Franken who is running for Senator who is giving SNL skits to put on against McCain...you don't hear about SNL doing a skit accusing the Palin family of INCEST...which is disgusting beyond words.

You just see this mindless blog of people who were probably paid by Obama to flood the blogs with 12-year-old anti-conservative remarks and liberal talking points.

The only thing scarier to me than Obama winning is that the news media is in the pocket of the Democrats. That's not a democracy. That's propaganda.

Biden's a stooge.

Lynn:60 yr old Obama supporter   September 22nd, 2008 6:05 pm ET

As Obama said on 60 minutes; McCain conveniently overlooks the five years before the "surge" when he advocated for the invasion of Iraq and lacked the judgment, foresight and understanding of its consequences.

MCCAIN was WRONG on Iraq and he lacks the credibility, temperment and respect from world leaders and their citizens to do anything to repair coalitions or America's standing in the world.

His rash pronouncements about Russia reveals the type of empty rhetoric that he would bring to the world stage!

Many Americans think that they can go it alone or that most of the world will fall lock step behind the US but Iraq proves them wrong. McCain lacks a 21st century of the world!!

Stella   September 22nd, 2008 6:04 pm ET

"Like McCain’s Sunday remarks, Biden’s lines on patriotism and the American flag got a rousing reception from the crowd. The crowd was silent during his attacks on the Republican nominee."

Of course they were silent when he started attacking b/c they know he is full of it....

McCain/Palin all the way. Despite what the left leaning, in Obama's back pocket CNN, NY Times, MSNBC etc. try to portray, McCain will win in '08

America think for you   September 22nd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

The reason why our economy is crashing is because of Iraq all the money that was supposed to refuel the economy are been sent to Iraq while the economy is let alone to die. The consumers have no confidence in the market that is mean they will not spend and again the economy will struggle. John McCain does not understand that simple economics formula and stated that the economy is strong. I know that McCain pocket is strong because he is a rich man. But, our economy is not strong.

Esmeralda   September 22nd, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Very very well said Senator Biden.
