The National Rifle Association released a new ad taking aim at Obama over the Second Amendment.

(CNN)—The National Rifle Association is taking aim at Sen. Barack Obama’s ‘bitter’ comment in a new ad, claiming the Illinois senator wants to ban shotguns and rifle’s commonly used for hunting.

“I learned that Barack Obama supports new tax on my guns and ammo,” Karl Rusch of Virginia says. “But it’s not just new taxes that Barack Obama wants. You can believe it. He also supports a ban on the shotguns and rifles most of us use for hunting.”

Obama has called for permanently reinstating the assault weapons ban, and voted for a 2005 amendment placing restrictions on rifle ammunition that is “designed or marketed” to be armor-piercing, but has not called for confiscation of rifles.

Watch: Obama speaks about his view on gun control

Joe Biden told supporters at a campaign event in Virginia Saturday they need not worry about their guns being confiscated under an Obama-Biden administration.

“I guarantee you, Barack Obama ain't taking my shotguns. So don't buy that malarkey,” Biden said Saturday. “They're going to start peddling that to you. I got two and if he tries to fool with my Berretta, he's got a problem.”

In the NRA’s ad, “Hunter,” Rusch concludes, “No politician is going to take away my guns and ammo. You don’t have to be bitter to know Barack Obama isn’t the kind of change we need.”

Despite the NRA’s strong criticism of Obama, the group has not endorsed John McCain for president.

McCain addressed NRA members at their convention in May, telling them he hasn’t agreed with them on “every issue,” but “those disagreements do not detract from my long record of support for the Second Amendment.”

The NRA is against Obama? Never would have guessed that.
Even if someone asks for a reasonable discussion on guns, the NRA freaks out and starts screaming "2nd Amendment!!".

Smart people will not buy this but, as I can see on this blog, there are some who well….

Politically Speaking   September 22nd, 2008 5:57 pm ET

I own a gun and I am in no fear of Obama attacking my rights to bear arms. This trick is the oldest in the book and actually supports Obama's comments about small town residents. They have been lied to so much by politicians that they cling to issues regarding their guns and religion. The republicans know this and they seek to highlight these wedge issues in an effort to steer votes away from democratic candidates.

KATHLEEN   September 22nd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Do gun owners have to PAY to belong to this idiotic NRA GROUP?
I would own guns but to Pay money to belong to an organization that
"tells" lies and "tells" its members who to vote for, is not my idea of
how I would be spending my money these days. GASOLINE would
be my priority. I need money for gas!!!!

lol election   September 22nd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

NRA always claims that the democrats want to remove the 2nd amendment. wether it be hillary, kerry, edwards, obama, kennedy, pelosi, or bill.

""…what did he say about people becoming bitter when economic situations become bad, they cling to guns (NRA) , religion (abortion)""

Besides, its so easy to get a gun license and a gun these days. There's more restrictions on buying and owning a car!

Sandra, Atlanta   September 22nd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Well whenever you want to run from the fact that you have no plan, bring out the good ole' NRA and let them spew lies. If any NRA supporter can explain to me why AK-47's are needed and armor piercing bullets are needed, I will be more than happy to listen. My husband is an ex-cop who shudders everytime he hears that they should both be perfectly legal. Do you people not care about those guys?

Patrick, Fairfield, CA   September 22nd, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Well, it's clear to my understanding that Obama has stated ever since this topic was asked as a question to him that he does not or has never been in favor of eliminating the Second Amendment. He has said he does, however, want to review old gun laws that still allow guns to get into the hands of criminals and people who have a history of mental and emotional issues. Now if that is an attempt to abolish the Second Amendment, I will challenge those who think this way to not only hear, but listen to Obama's stance on this issue again for clarity!

Wynter   September 22nd, 2008 5:53 pm ET

The NRA used to be a responsible organization for Gun Owners,

Nowadays, it's just a political operation that makes Gun Owners look like Rednecks and Outlaws.

Someone tell the NRA to get back to its roots and stop playing politics with the 2nd Amendment. We aren't stupid, ignorant, backwoods rednecks. We are responsible people and we are being "misrepresented" by the NRA nitwits in charge.

Brilliant news about CNN Poll of Polls showing Obama 49 to John McCain 44. Keep up the great work Obama and Biden. Take that McCain and Palin.

Obama-Biden 2008!!!

TPnTN   September 22nd, 2008 5:48 pm ET

They continue to lie even when it has been proven to be just that a LIE!! It is amazing that so many Americans seem to have the preference of lies and fear-mongering. SAD!!! Just SAD!!!!

God help us!!!

Bill   September 22nd, 2008 5:45 pm ET

I don't know of a hunter who will vote for Obama…..not a one. Obama is a city dweller who has no clue about hunting or any other kind of sport related to guns.

He is no doubt in lock step with other Democrats looking to take ALL guns out of the hands on Americans.

DJ Los Angeles   September 22nd, 2008 5:45 pm ET

The NRA are a bunch of right-wing fanatics anyways. No shocker here.

Every American's share of the national debt is approximatelt $40,000. Screw you NRA, lets talk about something important.

Is this the best "bright shiny object" McLame/Painful can come up with?

Find out the facts....   September 22nd, 2008 5:38 pm ET

There they go again…lies, lies, lies.

Get the facts people, do not listen to these people, it is the scar tactics again. Obama had said it over and over again, he will stand up for the 2nd Amendment. He did say he would see that it was harder for a criminal to get a gun……yeah Obama's a real bad man wants to keep Americans safe.

Watching this election closely...   September 22nd, 2008 5:37 pm ET

hmmm… interesting that NRA has come out against Obama (to be expected!), but they have NOT come out in support of McCain… hmmm… even they can't make that leap!

LB   September 22nd, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Nothing wrong with a little gun control. My husband has hunted all his life, never with an AK47. If I lived on the streets of Chicago, I also would want to keep AK47's out of the hands of children and gangs.

Carmen   September 22nd, 2008 5:34 pm ET

If you look at the way the Republicans lie they will say anything to win. Guns is not on the agenda, and Obama already said he will not take away any guns just make sure they are not in the hands of people who don't need them.

JRG   September 22nd, 2008 5:33 pm ET

I am a member of the NRA and support what they stand for, but this election has WAY larger issues at stake than gun control. So my wife and I will both be voting Obama and praying he doesn't screw us on our second amendment rights. I will "risk" my second amendment rights to insure our country doesn't get the final flush from the republicains.

Some Things Never Change   September 22nd, 2008 5:32 pm ET

You have got to be kidding, with the economy in the condition it is in and they want to talk about guns, give me a break. No one is going to take away the second amendment. Whether or not a person owns a gun is not going to pay the mortgage, it is not going to put gas in your car, it is not going to help you keep you job, let's get real folks.

I see nothing wrong with some common sense legislation on background checks, most of us have to submit to background checks when we go to work for a company. All of us must submit to credit checks when we get credit cards or buy a home or a car. Let's not get into this argument of invasion of privacy, it flies in the face of common sense that you would submit to a background check for a job but not for a weapon, they are one in the same in most cases.

I believe the gun issue is a dog with no teeth, there is not a candidate out there who wants to abolish the second amendment. Most people support criminal background checks for those who wish to own a gun. those out there who cry about background checks must have something to hide. I own several weapons and I have had to submit to background check yet I have never had a problem.

Can we move on to more important issues like the economy, healthcare, foreign policy, things that actually matter in day to day life for most people. This is such a silly argument, it shows just how little people understand how the government works and what it takes to amend the Constitution, move on.

Freedom of speech does not give someone the right to lie or even to distort the truth and if the FCC would do their job that we tax payers pay for this kind of junk would not be happening and real issues could be debated and reported on.

Patricia   September 22nd, 2008 5:30 pm ET

I think that all of us need to look at the facts. I don't care what other lies McCain/Palin try to come up with I am voting for Barack Obama and Joe Biden. They are the men that are supposed to lead this country for the next eight years. He is here to help us, not hurt us. Get a life NRA. Your lies don't work here.

George w. McCain   September 22nd, 2008 5:30 pm ET

No one is taking anyones guns away. How do you expect the government which has problems running the simplest of programs, going to arrange to pick up all of the guns from people who don't want to give them up. Ain't going to happen, no matter who is President. It's a red herring to keep the enrollment up at the NRA

observer   September 22nd, 2008 5:29 pm ET

As a licensed gun dealer I am required by law to do a background check on ALL my customers. The truth is that bad guys will always get there hands on guns,be it by stealing them or other illegal ways. Obama has thought constitutional law for 12 years, so he believes that we have a right to gun ownership. Don't be fooled by these lies. 5 republicans in my home are voting Obama this year, because we're sick of it. There are many guns for sale, but if theres no money to purchase them, then what good are they?

Dandelion.   September 22nd, 2008 5:28 pm ET

lol, if guns is your #1 priority, you wouldn't be voting for Obama anyway. Or McCain, actually.

megalodonbite   September 22nd, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Aww…is the NRA upset because Obama wants to get rid of your guns? I hope he does because there would be a lot more lives saved in this country with tougher gun laws, or perhaps getting rid of them all together. Why dont you go tell the families of the Columbine victims you are so upset about this or go cry somewhere else until you get what you deserve.

NRA member for Obama   September 22nd, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Republicans, … your party is on its last legs. You and your religious wingnut radicals have driven wedges into American society. For such stellar values voters you lie about every issue. The country is changing, and your racist days are becoming history. Bush, and his gang have nearly destroyed our economy, our military, our reputation, our security, and much, much more. Outright lie.

From Obama's website…

"Millions of hunters and shooters own and use guns each year. Barack
Obama believes the Second Amendment creates an individual right, and he respects the constitutional rights of
Americans to bear arms. He will protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase,
own, transport, and use guns."

Here we go again! Following the bouncing ball and forget about the fact that your house is about to be foreclosed on and you don't have a job or health insurance. Or the fact that gas is almost $4 dollars a gallon. Cuz the only thing that matters is that the Democrats want to take away your guns and kill babies. Did I mention that Obama was a "Muslim"?

Come on people, don't fall for it again! My fellow comrades and I can't afford it. My 3 kids can't afford for you to be scared into voting for another RICH idiot who doesn't really care about the issues they are distracting you with. Use your brains this time. You have them, so use them. PLEASE!

THE GOP started late with the race baiting, and Guns and God arguments. The Country is about to tank and people are running scared just to hold onto their savings and jobs. I doubt if they care about a gun. The gov't can't even dump 500,000 foreclosed homes, what would they do with a bunch of guns? NOT THIS TIME, register to vote DEM and let's show the GOP that their tactics worked in 2004, but will not work now. Too much is at stake, the entire Country.

In the primary, his misguided (and factually incorrect) sarcasm regarding Hillary being "Annie Oakley" and his more recent sarcasm regarding Palin's moose hunting, it wouldn't be a shock to find that Obama thinks little of guns or gun owners. That's cause he's a city boy and most of us in this country are country boys. Good luck with the ban, city O – I don't think it's gonna fly out here in the real world.

This is the reason so many avid sportspeople refuse to support the NRA. This is just a campaign gimmick to get votes. If the NRA was truly worried about Obama taking guns away from people, they would save their money and credibility to use once he begins to do so which they know is not going to happen without amending the Constitution.

They thought the same thing with Clinton. They love to use this fear tactic about this time every eight years. I am an Independent voter voting for Barack Obama, and I am a hunter that loves to hunt, fish, and engage in all other Redneck activities that my rural backwoods friends love to do. I voted for Bush in 2000, and would like to see my mother country head in a different direction, one that embodies the spirit and beliefs of ALL Americans, and not just some.

Brennan, Seattle WA   September 22nd, 2008 5:16 pm ET

I am a proud gun owner, but this is why I cancelled my NRA membership. I grew up with guns and would never give up my guns, but I understand that we have a problem in our cities. As a country we have to do what is needed for the greater good. If that means that we impose some regulations on weapons in the inner city then I am ok with that.

For too long the gun community has seen giving an inch as giving up. It is unfortunate that we need restrictions at all, but compromise requires both sides to work together for a solution that protects us all.

mick   September 22nd, 2008 5:14 pm ET

Most of you miss the point or you are politicaly driven. ANY restrictions/bans permanent or otherwise represent challenges to the Second Amendment. Pure and simple. Spin it anyway you want, but be careful to uphold the Constitution and not bow to the politics of a party. The Supreme Court just ruled in favor of gun ownership in one's home.

Like the NRA or not, do not to tread on Constitutional rights. This is not a good thing to do if you wish to woo independent voters.

PS: The name calling indicates total lack of sophistication and poor debating/discussion skills. Try staying on topic and presenting ideas in a compelling fashion. You can do it.

Henrita   September 22nd, 2008 5:14 pm ET

An NRA in the middle of this crisis? What an obvious attempt to distract SOME people (thank God, not all) from McCain's weakness with the economy. The NRA is just trying to help McCain now and unfortunately, some people will believe the lies because these people are just dumb! This is my first time following a presidential election and I am amazed at the sleaze and tacticsof the Republicans and thier allies. Obama has run a masterful campaign and SHOULD be further ahead in the polls. We all know why he isn't, though. McCain/Palin scares the hell out of me when thinking about the future of this country. Obama is right – they are out of touch.

We do need more strict control on gun. Even though I acknowledge the need of gun in the bear country, we have so many tragedy due to gun. I am sure both parties can agree that we need to reduce the crimes. I want to know the position of each candidate how they plan to reduce crimes. If the conclusion is banning the gun is the only way, I think we do have to give up the rights to protect the human rights of other people. But I have not seen any in-depth discussion. These discussions are always around the symbolic matter, like gun ownership, or abortion, it seldom addresses the core issues, like crimes, rapes, etc.

The problem is that you can only regulate the legal means of gun ownership, and I don't think the criminals are usually the ones participating the background checks and waiting periods. They are concerned that it will be harder for law-abiding citizens to own guns, while the criminals are still getting them through illegal means. It may be an unfounded fear, but most people who stand by the Second Amendment are more concerned about the government than the criminals (although they are sometimes one and the same).

Daniel va   September 22nd, 2008 4:59 pm ET

An other lie over lies, lies lies… McCain is in panic right now… He is scared to dead to lose the election. So he will do anything or say anything to win. Obama said earlier he is absolutely sure that the NRA will agree with him: How can we let a criminal with a AK47 in his hand .His comments are the reality and nobody will deny it.

Maureen / Calif.   September 22nd, 2008 4:58 pm ET

NRA = Trashy people that will lie, just like McCain and Palin to serve their own personal agendas.

Typical lies and distortions. Let us focus on the economy and stop smearing a decent man.

My 1st Job in the A.F was as a combat arms instructor. I have fired all types of weapons from M-9 to 50 cal. My vote will go to Obama he is the only logical choice in these times. We can not allow the likes of Sarah Palin to be a heart beat away from the leadership of the free world.

Michael   September 22nd, 2008 4:57 pm ET

Hey WhoIsPalin, don't get down on CNN for not fact checking this one. There's so many lies spewing forth from McCain and Palin, it's pretty difficult to fact check all of them. They'd have to double their staff just to keep up.

Donna from Colorado Springs   September 22nd, 2008 4:57 pm ET

So McBush has tried to sick the NRA on Obama. There's nothing that man won't do or say to win this election. He lies through his dentures every time he opens his mouth! He thinks that the american people believe his lies about the money crisis being the fault of Obama. If he would read the papers, he would know that we blame McBush and the republicans for this mess and noone else!

CNN = Jerry Springer of news   September 22nd, 2008 4:56 pm ET

Obama believes heavily in the Constitution, unlike some of our conservative counterparts (Habeas Corpus, Patriot Act). The Second Ammendment guarantees the right to bear arms and Obama supports this. That does not mean there should be no regulation (yes, I know that is also a dirty word for conservatives) regarding how and when to purchase firearms.

BTW, I am a female hunter living in rural Wisconsin who owns a rifle and a shotgun myself.

KM   September 22nd, 2008 4:56 pm ET

I do not own a gun and at this point I do not want one. But what gun lovers should understand is that your right to bear arms and my right to want to live in a gun free (safe) community is the same. Here is where we must find a common ground. You want to defend your community with the presence of guns, I want to defend my community through other non-violent alternatives.

A person caring a shotgun in the countryside of Montana is different than someone caring a shotgun in New York City. I personnaly think that gun manufacturers should be held to a higher standard so that when guns do get into the wrong hands, the police can trace it back to it's origin and work from their. The gun manufacturer sold it to Joe Blow, Joe Blow sold it to his local pawn shop, the local pawn shop sold it to Susie Q, and so on.

Loud & Proud Leftie   September 22nd, 2008 4:56 pm ET

I'm really glad that Biden made this announcement, by saying that the Obama-Biden administration. I think Obama is just concerned about the use of these guns. He doesn't want to see citizens of his country hurt by these weapons, but I agree completely with the idea that guns should be legal. And I agree that Palin is nothing but a liar. I'm 100% backing Obama. His groups make such an effort to receive our votes, while McCain just lies about all of his policies.

I'm a gun owner.

I'm voting for Obama.

Obama has a reluctance towards firearms because of limited exposure to them. All he sees of handguns is gangland murders in Chicago. Being hostile and confrontational towards him won't change his opinion, showing him safe, sane, reasonable gun owners will.

VIRGINIA will be blue   September 22nd, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Ethan   September 22nd, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Obama/Biden play lip service to gun owners but have said some key things that reveal their intentions. The NRA ads are always over the top. But gun owners should indeed be concerned about Obama's intentions on the gun rights front. Those who said it's not a huge issue this election are correct in the short term, but it's all about the judges Obama could appoint.

Keep America safe, McCain in 08   September 22nd, 2008 4:48 pm ET

THIS ELECTION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE; IT HAS TO DO WITH THE CREDINTIALS OF MAN WHO IS NOT QUALIFIED TO RUN OUR COUNTRY.
The Democratic Party pushed Hillary out, for fear of having a former president and a president (Clintons) with too much power over them.

Big mouth ‘Speaker of ‘The House) could not stand to have another female tell her anything, I don’t see why not because she is clueless.

So they play there game, which they do so well, and BO with trips into the position. BO is the racist, he is the one along with his wife that are throwing the race card.

Anonymous in CO   September 22nd, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Just another McCain & Palin lie!! Time to wake up America to the truth. If you want another 4-years just like the last eight then you must be in the top 1% income bracket that Obama is going to raise taxes on. As a Hillary supporter I'm not fully backing Obama for president. We need to change the direction our country is heading. McCain was in office during the last two financial melt downs. Plus, we had a Bush as our president both times.

How stupid is this, go ahead repubs keep trying to take our focus off of the economy and the trillion dollar bailout that all of us as Americans are now responsible for.

This gun ad is a lie and we all know it, it was designed to distract us. Only a fool would fall for this crap and vote for a repub because of it. Do they really think this gun ad will make anyone change their mind and vote for mccain and that liar palin?

Screw me once shame on you, screw me twice shame on me. It will be a cold day in hell before the repubs ever win the presidency again, they can not be trusted to do the right thing by all Americans. OMG! Barack isn't going to take your guns away. On the contrary, he can set you up with some weapons dealers from the south side of Chicago. Homicides are flourishing in Barack's home state. In Chicago alone this past weekend there were nine separate murders committed in the city. Handguns, shotguns, rifles, knives, rope… name the victim and guess the weapon used. Barack knows the game. Great job you've done on crime in your home state Barack. Nope, don't worry about Barack disarming you. Name your weapon.

Well of course he wants to ban guns. He wants to make sure that everyone cannot legally purchase firearms. Never mind that he won't do a thing about all the gangs who can still obtain them ILLEGALLY (that's a fine example of community activism there Barry)!

Besides, if more decent Americans had guns it'd be more difficult when Barry's close friend Bill Ayers goes back to bombing things.

And no, it's Obama who'll do anything for a vote. Get him to stand up and speak (without his teleprompter) about just one plan he has. That'll be an hour of dead air (not including the multitude of umms and ahhs he'll say).

My question is: how do you combat this right-wing strategy?

No matter how many times Obama says he will not raise taxes, or he will not take your guns, or he lays out six specific steps for the economy, the other side simply says the opposite, and people believe it.

What can you do in the face of outright lies? If you calmly tell the electorate that you are NOT going to do whatever you're being accused of, you look defensive, and more people are against you.

This is crazy.

Yes. I heard a supporter ask Obama this question while campaigning in Pennsylvania. The lady asked, many of us like what you're saying but we also hear that you are going to take our guns. Obama answered, I wouldn't even succeed if I tried. Tell your folks, I am not going to take your guns but I know there are many NRA members here who would not want for us to have a reasonanble and safe gun control. That's not a good idea. You can have your guns but we must ensure that we keep AK 47 out from the hand of criminals. That's his answer. So, NRA should stop scaring people.

Put "Lipstick on a pig and it's still a pig" – Barack is right on this one – Put lipstick on Palin's Alaska Pork and it's still Palin's Alaska Pork – Color does play in this election whether anyone will admit it or not – and yes Barack is the first Black to win a nomination and the reason he has my vote is I know if there's ever been a President that wants this country going in the right direction it will be a Black, because they can't afford for this country to do otherwise. If the country doesn't do better after he's in office outcries will be heard on Mars. McCain doesn't need to make the country better, he's a White guy. Barack doesn't have a choice – he has to do good. I was a Republican but McCan't and Miss Piggy Lips have pushed me to the other side – thank God they showed me the light. I'm 65 and WHITE.

NRA….complete morons.

I advocate the right to bear arms, so any organization that lies can be shot through the head…first on the list…the NRA.

There is no fact, truth or even stretch of the imagination that this is true. All facts indicate the absolute opposite, Obama supports our constitutional rights…….ALL OF THEM. Deal with that, and get back under your rock morons!

Just another distraction topic. I just gave $50 to Obama because I am sick of this economy. In November Obama gets my vote. I know John McCain has no idea what to do, because he said the economy was strong when it is not. Now we have to pay so much money to get the banks out of trouble. So, why are we still spending all this money in Iraq? If McCain wins this election, he will keep spending billions every month in Iraq? I don’t think McCain cares how much the war cost, because McCain and his rich friends will keep eating. They are getting their money now (today) in this bailout. While, the rest of us have to wait to see who gets elected. I have friends who say they can’t see themselves voting for Obama, even though they like him. They say they will vote for McCain even though they don’t like him or Palin. They are just Republicans voting the party line. Still, here we all seem to agree on one thing. If Obama don’t win, the rest of us will get nothing, but more taxes. Then, when we lose our jobs, and can’t pay for our homes. They will take them and sell them to someone else, for half the price. It is happening every day, right here, right now, before the election. Obama needs our vote, and our money to win in November. Let’s support him now, before it is too late. As for the Republican, I tell them to vote Obama or Bob Barr if they truly want their party back.
