An Obama ad mocking McCain's computer skills barely ran.

(CNN) — Joe Biden can rest easy.

That Obama campaign ad mocking John McCain's computer illiteracy only ran 6 times, according to CNN's ad consultant Evan Tracey of TNS Media Intelligence/CMAG.

The ad, which Biden called 'terrible' Monday in an off-the-cuff comment to CBS News, also appeared to only air in the Washington, DC area, though it was heavily reported in blogs and news reports.

The 30-second spot was released by the campaign 10 days ago and sought to portray McCain as out-of-touch with most Americans.

Watch: Obama ad paints McCain as out of touch

“1982. John McCain goes to Washington,” says the announcer. “Things have changed in the last 26 years. But McCain hasn’t. He admits he still doesn’t know how to use a computer, can’t send an e-mail. Still doesn’t understand the economy."

Has everyone forgot about the Keating 5? Or are you too young to remember?

Ed   September 23rd, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Some of the veterans who were with McCain in the Viet nam pow camp say he was not tortured at all. Check YouTube.

Dj   September 23rd, 2008 1:17 pm ET

I should be played a 1.5 trillion times… one time for every dollar that McCain and his cronies cost the american taxpayers… (this bailout sits directly in McDeregulate's lap)

Independent in NC   September 23rd, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Good for Biden, that ad was disgusting. Making fun of torture injuries is a new low. Anyone who can use a computer comfortably could go to FactCheck.org and see that has nothing to do with him being out of touch, but yet people keep trying to perpetuate that.

Darla (Edmonton, Canada)   September 23rd, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Also … I just re-watched the ad again … can someone tell me where there was a specific reference to the residual physical after effects of McCain's time as a POW? Even my Dad … who survived serious injury in the Normandy invasion … kept up with the times and could email. Until the day he died, my Dad wanted to live in the PRESENT … clearly, John McCain wants to keep using his PAST as an excuse.

Dear John McCain,
If you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen.

Dear Joe Biden,
Please muzzle your self, or at least think before you speak against your own party.

Signed.

There is no excuse for a man who wants to be president of the greatest country in the world can't use the simple devices of the modern world. If he can't use his hands then use his mouth….he sure isn't disabled in that form, cus he is out there using it to bad mouth Obama everday! I'm sorry, but I don't want no more handicapped president! Bush was mentally handicap and McCain is physically handicapped….I am for the ADA, but darn!

Annette, Washington, DC   September 23rd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Okay, CNN, you made your point. Biden expressed his thought, I do recall Obama saying that he chose a VP that would express himself and challenge him. A far more cry then the McCain camp, you better not go against McCain even if you are wrong, he will fire you and no worse then Ms. Carly Fiorna, saying McCain or Palin were qualifed to be CEOs, let's not forget that.

Anonymous   September 23rd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I cant believe how many idiots CNN can fit into one blog.

please   September 23rd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Bryan, How did you finally realize that Obama doesn't love this country? Good Job. McCain is definitely more American, left his wife for a younger, better looking one who has more money, served in the army (can never question anything he has ever done because he is a vet), completely changes his life-long stance on deregulation in 24 hours, keeps his VP pick from answering any questions, and lies non-stop. Bring on the loving, it's going to be a great 4 years with McCain because he loves this country. After all, "all we need is love."

Dishonorable Republicans   September 23rd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Sorry guys … we're not falling for this distraction ….

Keep pounding McCain on the issues … at what point will we need a military draft Senator, a war with Iran, a war with Russian, an invasion of Venuzela … when..

In the debate … Senator Obama … cut McCain quick …. deliver quick jabs … no big looping hay-makers.

Simple answers that low information voters can digest.

CNN broadcasts nearly whole speeches by Obama. Ive been wondering if they might be biased if favor of him. Why shouldn't they essentially advertize this ad free of charge?

Only the truth matters   September 23rd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I'm glad to see that Obama will not roll-over to GOP attacks like Kerry did with the swift boat incident. McCain must not be elected or we'll know that the idiots in our society have taken over. No way, no how, no McCain

Rodger   September 23rd, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Just Joe being honest! If both campaigns would only stick to positive adds, the Republican will have nothing to say! You can't blame Obama for hitting back. Kerry failed to address their lies and the last 4 years have caused the tragedy we are now in.

"I don’t expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need — including going to my daughter’s blog first, before anything else.”

"I do have rudimentary capabilities to call up some websites, like the New York Times online, that sort of stuff. No laptop. No PalmPilot. I prefer my schedule on notecards, which I keep in my jacket pocket."

tara   September 23rd, 2008 1:15 pm ET

CNN, this isn't even real news. Next!!!!!

Tak   September 23rd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

It's true. If you are not up to date in how people all over the world communicate, how can you run a country? You can't. Back in McCain's days, he was using the Pony Express, so of course it matters alot that he doesn't know how to use a computer. He openly stated that too that he has never had to write an e-mail himself and ask others to do it for him. And of course, if you own 13 cars and 8 houses, you wouldn't care how the economy is doing.

TexasVet   September 23rd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Seriously CNN, cut it out! Do your job and report some REAL NEWS. Stop being so biased! If you want to start some stuff then talk about how the CLINTONs are trying to destroy Obama behind the scenes. Talk about Bill Clinton's appearance on David Letterman last night and how he didn't want to say Obama's name. Talk about how Chris Rock had to CALL HIM OUT on it. Talk about that, instead of trying to pit Biden against Obama.

Obama 08! I will never vote for Hilary in 2012 or otherwise!

It is common for media to censor touchy blatant truth such as this. Granted McCain cannot type because of his war injuries, he really doesn't know how to use a computer too well. Biden was a moron for his comments though but of course he is known for that kind of thing.

The problem for me isn't the ad itself. It's run-of-the-mill, par-for-the-course for both parties during an election year.

My problem is that Biden is consistently putting his foot in his mouth. From saying he wasn't the better choice for VP to saying his own ticket's ads are terrible.. he's not too bright.

milo   September 23rd, 2008 1:12 pm ET

I don't buy Mac's excuse. HE himself described himself as "illiterate", a "neanderthal" when it comes to the technology, and said he didn't KNOW how to use it.

It's pretty pathetic to use injuries as an excuse when there are plenty of people with much more severe handicaps who are much more functional with technology. If the man really cared, there are many options available that he could have taken advantage of.

I stand by this ad, the man is out of touch.

Jane, Madison   September 23rd, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Joe—–you're not fooling anyone—-first you approve the ad in private meetings with your staff and then you denounce it after the message is already out.

Joe—this is why Sarah Palin draws 50,000 to a speech in Central Florida over last weekend and you've never drawn more than 2,000 and you had to give away free beer just to get that.

Gee Matt, I'm not being paid by anyone, and I couldn't make up the lies Palin and McCain are dishing out. She has not given one speech that wasn't riddled with lies. Just the fact that they won't let her be interviewed shows that she has much to hide. She is in no way ready to be VP unless
you really want WWIII-they will start it in the name of "Country First." Right now, they are putting country last and themselves first. But the polls are moving, and the debates will tell the story. I can just hear her new foreign policy readiness" well, I met with the leaders from Columbia,…." but I bet she won;t be able to tell one thing of substance that occurred in any meeting…because there won't be any.

McCain/Palin tried to ban reporters from Palin's meeting with world leaders.

The networks voted to not cover it at all unless granted access. McCain blinked and provided access (a whole 40 seconds of it).

McCain/Palin treat the press the way the Nazi Party treated it.

Patricia   September 23rd, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Eric29inPA - If it is true that Republican McCain can't use the computor because of injuries to his arms, then why not come out and explain that in a rebuttal. It would have put it all to rest. There are other ways to use the computer, e-mail, etc. Technology guru's would devise a computor adapted to his physical needs. Use some common sense.

If it is true, however, there is nothing wrong with stating it. I didn't see the ad, so don't know if it was presented offensively or factually.

Anne   September 23rd, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Weary   September 23rd, 2008 1:10 pm ET

What is wrong with this country?

McCain/Palin distorts the truth on a regular basis, and rarely gets called on it. When they are called on it, they cry foul, or ignore the call and continue to lie.

Obama/Biden state FACTS, and get taken to task for it. It's a crying shame when anyone should have to apologize or feel that they've done something wrong when they TELL THE TRUTH.

I weep for this country.

Could be that the ad only ran in six spots, but Obama says this in his stump speech. I have heard him, more than once. Obama has no shame; he is careless with fact and has no business to bring down the cultural and civil stature of our country like this. How cruel!

Eric   September 23rd, 2008 1:07 pm ET

In the NY media market I saw the ad 3 times but it also got a lot of news coverage and was played over and over again on stations such as CNN and MSNBC. It does not matter how many times an ad is played but how much coverage it gets. The Wille Horton ad only ran a limited number of times as well.

Lesley, Lighthouse Point, FL   September 23rd, 2008 1:07 pm ET

The only reason that this story has legs is because big media is being controlled by big business and the GOP. Since the demotion of two MSNBC media types, every press person has quit doing their jobs because they are all running scared for their jobs. I actually don't believe that this ad is that bad. Look at the horrible ads that McCain is running including the 'sex ed' ad against Obama. This one pales in comparison. I am so sick of how the McCain campaign using his POW days to put everyone on their heels. All really unfortunate.

Ted   September 23rd, 2008 1:07 pm ET

kennywest   September 23rd, 2008 1:04 pm ET

The reason McCain can't use the computer has nothing to do with war injuries, it does however have something to do with his age.

Rudy NYC   September 23rd, 2008 1:04 pm ET

I must question the excuse that McCain has old war injuries that prevent him from using a computer. Not to cast doubt on his injuries. Not that he needs to know anyway. That's what aides are for.

But, there have been a few pictures and video on the web showing McCain using technology such as cell phones. He seems capable enough to shuffle his sheets of paper when he needs to make speeches. So, i am not sold on the war injury argument for not using a PC. But, he doesn't need to know how anyway. But, it does help.

GardenGal   September 23rd, 2008 1:04 pm ET

From what I've read, McCain has a hard time doing repetitive tasks and these articles specifically mention "using the keyboard," but I think that you can still do a lot with a computer via mouse and voice recognition technology (can't you?). I don't believe for a minute that they considered that while running the ad, until it was mentioned by outsiders claiming "dirty politics" and "low blows"…then they pulled it.

Frankly I don't think its that bad.

I'm tired of people saying McCain can't use a computer because of war injuries. He has the resources to acquire any kind of special equipment he needs. If his time in Vietnam made him unable to type, maybe his post-traumatic stress made him too mentally unstable to lead. You can pick and choose your excuses, can't you?

The NUMBER of Times it ran is not the ISSUE. It's the content. It's also the media coverage the negativity gets that's the concern here. The press just loves to highlight "DIRT" in any way to get RATINGS. The press is all about "SCOOP" and who's got what "dirt" FIRST. The issue is not the content at all. It all gets lost in the coverage. It's all SMEAR the other party the best way possible and the media's EAT IT UP. They just look for any little mis-spoke word, any little twist to a look, action or Heaven help us - an implied thought. RATINGS !

Liam Danhof   September 23rd, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Mr. Biden….SHUT UP! If it were not for Mr. Obama you wouldn't even be here as the VP pick. If you don't like something then tell Mr. Obama what you think is wrong and I'm more than sure he will hear you out and fix it. Buy please

Donna   September 23rd, 2008 1:00 pm ET

The notion that McCain can not use a computer because of war injuries has been completely discredited. He said earlier this year he was learning to use a computer. He regularly barbecues, squeezes lemons and does other things involving his hands. And, were there any impairment of his hands, there are many modifications which would allow him–had he any genuine interest–to become computer literate. Grow up.

Ryan in VA   September 23rd, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Dont forget that McCain puts out ads that

MAKE FUN OF RELIGION….Then say it was just a joke and

you have to have a sense of humor OR "WE WOULD SLIT OUR

WRISTS………. now whats wrong with this ad again?

Veronica in Atlanta   September 23rd, 2008 12:58 pm ET

I understand why they pulled the ad - because people so easily misinterpreted it. I want to know that the man claiming to have the experience for the top job in our country is not in touch with how vastly the internet has changed our world and made it smaller EVEN IF it is due largely because of his injuries.

Remember, John McCain could have a custom-made keyboard if he cannot use the standard. He has 7 houses and 13 cars for Christ sake. So, where are his priorities

OBAMA/BIDEN 08

Ross Putzvatik   September 23rd, 2008 12:58 pm ET

This gas shortage thing is yet another Republican scam to somehow get votes for McCain in the upcoming election.

Okay CNN stop trying to make excuses for the ad…..It was terrible and Biden agreed.

This is yet another attempt by CNN to help Obama.

I guess CNN doesn't seen just how transparent they are……will the REAL JOURNALIST PLEASE STEP FORWARD….and take these CNN amateurs back to Journalism 101.

Hillary 2012   September 23rd, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Why this news now ?
If it ran one time also that ad is terrible
Please can you be independent CNN
Don’t support Obama or Mc Cain

Kenneth   September 23rd, 2008 12:58 pm ET

You republicans really have a lot of nerve to think that this ad has hit any lower below the belt than any of the SMEAR ads that have been produced against OBAMA.

Shut your mouths and get over it, then get ready to get kicked to the curb by the voters in November LIKE YOU DESERVE!

Obama is REAL Change   September 23rd, 2008 12:58 pm ET

OK Obama and Biden…IT's time to see an ad that show McCain involvement with The Keating Five, INCLUDING McCain……..

fella from Chicago   September 23rd, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Leave it to the slimeball far left Dems to criticize a war hero for not being able to use a keyboard due to wounds inflicted while being held captive. Whatever rocks you live under must have a god awful stench of hate permeating from them. May God forgive you for living out your meaningless existence here on this planet.

Steve   September 23rd, 2008 12:58 pm ET

It is refreshing to hear a candidate be honest and open about things that his campaign does. This is almost a man bites dog story. The media are jumping all over this with an "How can he do this?" attitude at the same time asking for civility in this contest? The flip-flops are as bad as Senator McCain's. Either you want honesty or you don't. Either you want straight talk or you don't. Were in against Senator Biden's honesty before you were in favor of it?

Matt   September 23rd, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Hey McCain supporters: Let's see your candidate put it on the table first…that he'll agree to stop the negative, misleading, fact-distorting attack ads if Obama will and focus solely on the issues. He won't? Oh, now there's a suprise…hmmmm…I wonder if it's because he can't win on the issues. Fri night's debate is going to be hilarious.

Conservative and Proud   September 23rd, 2008 12:57 pm ET

You people are heartless. John McCain can't use a computer for long periods of time (which you may do instead of getting a job, because you're on welfare, which is why you're voting for Obama).

kennywest   September 23rd, 2008 12:57 pm ET

It's not so much he doesn't know how to use a compuyer as it's a question of why. We need a President who is at least intellectually curious about future advancements. It would be like a canidate in the past not caring much about the industrial revolution when it began. The reason the Obama camp droped it was because McCain was linking it to POW injuries. Not being able to use the keyboard. I like the way they explain away all of McCain short comings with that POW story. I noticed he doesn't have any trouble waving with that thumbs up thing, also how does he plan to veto all those earmark things with his POW injuries.

Debby   September 23rd, 2008 12:57 pm ET

CNN is guilty because they ran the ad now they have to backtrack and make it the whole ticker page.

The candidate who elected a VP that is undergoing an investigation regarding her abuse of power! She should be replaced. Heck McCain puts out web ads on this website and gets free coverage for most :)

TV is outdated anyway

Matt   September 23rd, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Seriously CNN, stop posting these idiots with their elipse and comma happy posts. At least when peopel are saying stupid things in normal typing it doesn't dumb the debate down quite as much.

Also, in keeping with the "fact check" movement, someone should start making a list at the end of each blog of all the poster who were obviously faking being from the other party in order to spew talking points.

White Couple for Obama!!   September 23rd, 2008 12:54 pm ET

At least its the TRUTH!! Unlike McCains Ads!

KJL   September 23rd, 2008 12:54 pm ET

I'm an old person who does know how to use a computer, so I looked this ad up on Youtube. It only reiterates what McCain has said himself, so how can anyone complain? McCain is so wealthy that he can hire people to do all the mundane little things that most of us cope with ourselves, but anyone who aspires to be president should be able to function effectively in the modern world.

Obama is becoming quite the liar and the same old politics as asual. He has taken more from the financial lobbyist than McCain. Obama has turned out to be the Chicago thug with anti-american friends that we knew he was from the beginning. The media created Messiah.

Jeffer65   September 23rd, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Smoke and mirrors, folks. Let's not talk about the issues. Why are we voting for these clowns? 3rd party candidates may be the better choice.

CarolO MI   September 23rd, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Good. I didn't like the ad either. McCain shows himself every single day as being out of touch without that computer ad. That ad made it look like everyone who doesn't use a computer is out of touch.

JohnOldMan   September 23rd, 2008 12:53 pm ET

The ad was accurate and true why is it 'terrible' to tell the truth. if obama ad is 'terrible' then what are you going to call all the horrible ads and lies from Mccain/Palin?

Real Talk   September 23rd, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Really, it's like Dems may know how to govern but they sure as heck don't know how to win. And could Bill shut up and stop trying to throw the race towards McCain so Hillary can run again in 4? It's obvious and tacky.

randy   September 23rd, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Where are all the stories about Obama and his LOW road campaign? We all saw the concetrated effort to castigate McCain with shame and despicable ads. Where is all the outrage when Obama picks on the fact that McCain has war injuries and has trouble using a keyboard? And even Biden comes out against the ad. And all CNN has to say is that it ran only 6 times. Still getting the talking points from Obama's campaign, eh? Let's have some honesty, both campaigns are saying and doing everything they can to win. Both McCain and Obama. To say otherwise shows your bias.

George Bush - Stealing Obama's plans
Bill Clinton
The Republican Smear Team of Political Campaigners
The Far Right Wing

JJ   September 23rd, 2008 12:50 pm ET

This is no big deal. I hope the Dems do not get caught up in this frenzy and start apologizing about nothing. The Repugs are nortorius for deflecting from real issues.

Lesley   September 23rd, 2008 12:50 pm ET

I agree with Frank. When all is said and done, the ad is completely true. Biden has nothing to dial back. He's honest about his feelings. He really isn't your typical politician, which should be an advantage for him if people aren't looking for the average politician in office. I think this is a plus for Joe Biden. People want the candidates to be straight with them, and Biden is much more straightforward than either McCain or Palin.

beevee   September 23rd, 2008 12:49 pm ET

I hope that the Obama-Biden campaign team review what their candidates will be saying to prevent such slip ups from happening. Such mistakes can be costly especially knowing how the republican strategists use them to their candidates' advantage since they have very little to talk on actual issues.

Jean 2   September 23rd, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Here we go again. The MEDIA trying to start conflict to give them talking points.

The MEDIA is acting like a hyenna with a dead animal, just can not let go!

America is in a MESS and parts of the MEDIA are stuck on stupid while every thing deterioate.

Kate Fergus   September 23rd, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Biden shows good character. I know Obama wanted to keep the election about the issues. He tries very hard to keep it focused on what is important to the people. However, McCain and Palin continually divert the attention away from issues to personal attacks. It clearly demonstrates the difference in the character of the candidates. Obama looks more presidential everyday while McCain looks flustered and way over his head.

CNN   September 23rd, 2008 12:49 pm ET

MCCAIN CAMP HAD RUN MORE TERRIBLE AD THAN OBAMA.

Rudy NYC   September 23rd, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Well, I'll take his honesty in commenting that he thought the ad 'terrible' over Palin's transparent support of all things McCain anyday. Palin and McCain do not see eye to eye on many issues, but you will NEVER hear her disagree..she'll blindly follow McCain till the end, while forsaking her own values and beliefs for the benefit of "Elected at all costs".

Matt in Pittsburgh   September 23rd, 2008 12:48 pm ET

It amuses me reading all you paid liberal bloggers squealing and whining about things you've made up for the most part. Now we have the Lord High Obama making fun of McCain's physical disability. Sounds like the party of inclusion to me.

Remember:
John Goti was a community organizer
Josef Stalin was a community organizer
Barry Obama was a community organizer
Jesse Jackson was a community organizer

really good company to keep, eh?

AJ   September 23rd, 2008 12:47 pm ET

Phew, good thing it didn't run SEVEN times! Because then it would have been DISHONORABLE. But running a disgusting personal attack ad only six times is clearly acceptable. Thank you for pointing this out. The Obama-media is redefining journalistic integrity in regards to fairness toward political candidates.

Bryan   September 23rd, 2008 12:47 pm ET

It was terrible, and Obama knows it, to bad his VP and him don't communicate about ads I guess. Doesn't matter. This undecided voter is actually not undecided. I'm for McCain/Palin. It just feels more American to me, John McCain loves this country without a doubt and that is who needs to lead this country. Obama seems more in it for the power and glamor.

Joe   September 23rd, 2008 12:47 pm ET

If McCain apologized for every smear, distortion, and mocking comment that his campaign and supporters have pushed against Obama, he would never say another thing until election day. Go Joe, for actually riding on the "straight talk express".

Matt   September 23rd, 2008 12:47 pm ET

Ask them CNN…don't be chicken: Would either campaign agree right now to stop all negative attack ads and run entirely on the issues? Ask them. Ask their representatives you have on your shows. Force them to say yes or no to the simplest of questions. Obviously one won't do it if the other one won't, but can enough press be made of the question to force the issue? You haven't asked them. Nobody has asked them. Put it on the table and ask them. Let's find out who blinks first.

Frank,

McCain can not comfortably use the computer because of his war injuries. Obama's camp was criticizing McCain's disability. That's just shameful and goes to show you how low the Obama camp will go to win an election. I noticed this in the primaries and this is why I refuse to vote for Obama although I voted for Hillary.

All the MSNBC commentators pounced on them as well.

Vote issues people.

Sean Chong   September 23rd, 2008 12:43 pm ET

I won't waste money to highlight Mccain's email skills, however, given the fact that GOP basically attacked Obama on all fronts regardless of whether they're stating the facts or lies, Obama has to do this to gain ground.

Greg, NY   September 23rd, 2008 12:43 pm ET

Yeah only ran 6 times that the campaign paid for. How many times did it get played on news channels such as CNN?

You guys are giving both campaigns way too much free air time for their ads, especially the controversial and false ones, you just love those.

McCain's lies get spread without being debunked and for free. Win-win situation for him.

Joey "Hair Plugs" Biden knows for a fact that John McCain's torture injuries make it difficult for him to use a standard computer keypad. Mocking a POW's injuries that he received while being tortured doesn't look so good, and Biden knew it. So he tried to disavow the ad by saying he would never have approved it. Problem was, that Obama did.
