Sen. Biden hasn't held a press conference or taken questions from voters in two weeks.

(CNN) – On Tuesday, John McCain held a press conference for the first time since becoming the Republican nominee, his first in six weeks. Much has been made of his running mate Sarah Palin not talking to the press corps traveling with her, and rarely sitting for interviews. But amid all the criticism of the Republican ticket avoiding the press, it has slipped the notice of many that Joe Biden isn’t giving press conferences either.

His last media availability was over two weeks ago on September 7 aboard his campaign plane, flying from Montana to Wisconsin. He spoke for about half an hour, over a third of which was in response to a question about partitioning Iraq.

But since then, there has been no interaction with the small band of reporters on the Delaware senator’s plane.

To be fair, the famously talkative Biden has given 89 national and local interviews, according to the campaign. Palin, in contrast, has granted just a handful, including one to People Magazine.

Biden's press secretary David Wade blames the lack of access on a compressed schedule, combined with a workload that includes preparing for next week's debate and writing speeches, like Wednesday's foreign policy address in Cincinnati. He says that there will be a press conference once things slow down, but adds that as Barack Obama prepares this week for Friday's presidential debate, Biden will pick up the slack by adding more events.

But Biden isn’t just keeping his press corps at arm’s length — he isn’t taking questions from voters either. As he left the convention in Denver and started campaigning alone, Biden answered voters’ questions at town halls every day for ten days in a row, except for the one day he took off.

On the tenth day, September 10 in Nashua, New Hampshire, Biden committed one of his biggest gaffes on the trail: when responding to a supporter he said Barack Obama might be better off if he had chosen Hillary Clinton as his running mate.

Now, gone is the town hall format — a change Wade also attributes to a tight schedule.

Last Thursday, in Akron, Ohio, Biden accused McCain and Palin of hiding from the press.

“When’s the last time John’s had a press conference?” asked Biden. “When elected officials stop holding press conferences, it ain’t because he’s found a new way to communicate, it’s because he doesn’t want to communicate.”

In early August, McCain hadn’t spoken to his press corps in over a month. So they jokingly bought a cardboard cutout of the Arizona senator for their cabin on the plane as a sad reminder of the access they once enjoyed on the Straight Talk Express. Three days later, McCain gave a press conference, and followed it up with two more in the following week.

Monday morning, Wade sent reporters on the bus a link to a Web site with a cardboard cutout of the Democratic VP nominee for sale — perhaps not a bad investment for an access-hungry press corps.

Like most of you said…we don't know this lady!! There seems to be too much cover up. Even Alaskans don't like her..and she been in their houses and in their pockets. She's puppet and repeats herself, so of course we want to actually SEE her speak on her feet. Right now we can just replay the previous recordings and the are all the same…and I say 'Thanks but no thanks' to puppets.

Are we running blind and deaf? Family (all my American Brothers and Sisters). Iran and Venesulla are Putins puppets, China and N. Korea are observers. We will never stabilize Iraq but we must never leave but keep it as a stronghold in that region. Putin is going to play us into a war knowing that once it's own the observers, China & N. Korea are going to get involved. It's just like on the streets folks you can't show signs of weakness and expect to run things, cause everybody want's to be top dog.

We already know everything to know about Biden. Sarah on the other hand refuses to talk to the press because she has a lot to hide and the more we find out about her, the scarier it gets! She's staying away from the press because the Republicans CANNOT HANDLE THE TRUTH!

FL4OB   September 23rd, 2008 10:34 pm ET

Biden has been in national & international politics for years, and he continues to do interviews with several networks (big difference). Many Americans already know Biden and have confidence in his abilities.

Charlotte   September 23rd, 2008 10:34 pm ET

Biden doesn't think Obama is qualified either. Guess he figures he can steer him straight. Like the statement he made about Obama taking his guns? I think he said, "ain't gonna happen." This election gets wierder and wierder everyday. I think when all the attention is on the opponents second string, you have a big problem. The more the Dems. focus on her, the better McCain looks. Obama is #1 and is compared to Sarah Palin, the #2? I can hardly wait for the McCain and Obama debates. Obama needs to study more then 3 days, he needs Hillary to coach him, and then I don't think he can help but to stutter and stammer. The debates are, above his pay grade..Too many drugs in his youth, has affected his brain cells..LOL

DWoods   September 23rd, 2008 10:32 pm ET

Biden is not a new comer dodging the media. It bewilders me how an American running for USA Vice President will talk to foreigners but not to the USA media. Does the McShame No Game campaign have to train her on every aspect of being VP? You people are beyond hilarious. You can't brief someone on the VPs job and everyday task. Experience has to play in somewhere along the line. Oops my fault!! Is that why McCain changed his theme from Experience to Change. First because Palin has no experience and he knows Change is what this country needs. McCain you have more experience and we don't need the kind of change you're promoting.

Angela   September 23rd, 2008 10:32 pm ET

Biden is not having a press conference because he wouldn't be able to practice plagarism which is cornerstone of his entire career along with the sexist views he's displayed.

A vote for Biden/Obama handcuffs our kids future and ensures that we're firmly on the track to becoming Socialist/Communist state like Cuba.

This isn't American Idol where we vote based on popularlity…use some common sense people…McCain/Palin for our the future of our children

jm from sc   September 23rd, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Mike,
A teleprompter is nothing new. It was invented back in the 50's. Most people you see on television that makes long speeches uses a teleprompter. Why do people think Obama have to memorize his speeches? I have never seen this level of ignorance. When you see news reporters talking, most of them have a teleprompter in front of them unless they are just talking. Obama is well capable of talking without the teleprompter. Those type comments are just plain silly.

Biden's press conference schedule is HARDLY the same to Palin's absolute vanishing act when it comes to press availability. Shame on CNN for trying to draw some equivalence between the two.

Palin is an utter unknown to the overwhelming majority of Americans, and her boss (John McCain) is preventing us from getting to know what she's all about.

I expect that kind of secrecy from totalitarians like Kim Jong Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. This is NOT how we behave in a democracy, John McCain. Where is your honor? Where is your decency?

The joke that the McCain camp has turned in to is truly pathetic. There was a time when I could actually consider voting for John McCain .. that was when I actually thought he really DID tell the truth.

I am a OBAMA supporter, I do however respect John McCain for many of the sacrifices he has made for this country. I think he does care, but I just don't think he understands everyday Americans. I think he thinks that everyone who puts forth effort has 7 homes, and 13 cars. When the fact of the matter is, I have a double bachlors degree, and I struggle to make it with the skyrocketing cost of fuel, healthcare, etc etc. We need someone who knows what it's like to pay student loans, home loans, and do things that everyday Americans do.

Also could we stop talking about how the candidates present a idea. McCain reads off little cards and Obama reads a teleprompter. BIG DEAL! WHO CARES! We have bigger issues than that!

high school student making a difference   September 23rd, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Um… last I checked, Biden has been dealing with the national press for decades. Palin has for a few weeks. Therefore, her avoidance of the press conferences is somewhat more of an issue than his.

I LOVE the fact that Obama chose someone as his VP who isn't a "yes" man, who won't walk in lock step with every position and has knowledge, experience and insight that will both challenge and inform Obama. I believe that is why Obama chose him. He wasn't looking for a "soulmate" he was looking for someone who would help him govern. That takes real leadership, real confidence and real courage.

FREDDIE MAC PAID MCCAIN CAMPAIGN CHIEF'S OLD FIRM UNTIL LAST MONTH

B. Hawkins   September 23rd, 2008 9:43 pm ET

Why is this news?. Biden has never been afraid to talk with press. He has been interviewed at least 84 times this year alone on Meet the Press, This week,Fox News and other programs. What does Palin have to hide. She is a heart beat from being POTUS and she is afraid to talk with press? She we cut her break because she is a girl? As Hillary once said if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

Jack   September 23rd, 2008 9:43 pm ET

Give it a break – we all know where Joe Biden stands on the issues. We know all about Joe Biden there are no surprises.

Now with the Bubble Lady (Sarah) we know that she is being handled so that people don't have a chance to find out about her except for the tale of lies spun in front of cameras at the convention.

Brenda   September 23rd, 2008 9:41 pm ET

Is there really anybody out there that can favorably compare Palin's knowledge and experience to that of Joe Biden??? REALLY???
Whether you are a Democrat or Republican, you have to admit that he is far superior in both. Now, yes, I know that the conservatives are in the tank for Sarah Palin…and that is their right. But honest to God, are we, as informed voters, really supposed to just accept McCain's word that Palin is ready.

Forget that! I've heard all I need to know about Sarah Palin. She was a TOKEN on the ticket. The token woman who was supposed to gather up Hillary's disappointed female voters. Only one problem, the Hillary gals are just plain too smart for that.

One more thing…if Obama really wants to create a stir, take over the news channels, and make everyone ask McCain/Palin who…all he has to do is announce some of the people he would include in his cabinet. Maybe, say Hillary Clinton and Colin Powell.

kris in RM,CA   September 23rd, 2008 9:41 pm ET

Biden is fearless. BIden is honest. Biden is a real man. Biden knows how to answer questions. Biden is real. Biden is just the best.
Palin is a phoney. Palin is a skilled liar. Palin is a con artist. Palin is trouble. Palin is undereducated for the job.
No one should vote for the McCain/Palin ticket. They are tricking the American public and will wreck the nation if allowed to.
Vote all Republicans out. Do you want Lieberman as Secretary of State and Graham as Secretary of the Treasurey. I think not.

Douglas, Los Angeles   September 23rd, 2008 9:40 pm ET

Wait a minute! Don't put Biden in the same pen with Palin. He answers questions, he's been on the talk shows, he's been on television for all of us to see. Maybe his schedule doesn't allow him to do any "news conferences" yet, but he's been there for us. At least we are getting to know this candidate. Palin, we know nothing about. She is like a Cheney. We cannot go down that same road again.

Enough! We need transparency, not Palin. The Palin effect is a joke!

Missy   September 23rd, 2008 9:39 pm ET

Well it's certainly not because Joe Biden is ignorant on the issues. I guess he's tired of talking to the press, when the Republican VP is getting special treatment by the press by not having to answer any questions that are too difficult for her. I've never seen such an unfair campaign in my lifetime. If you can't talk to the press and answer questions, that should tell you something–you're not qualified!

Patrick, Fairfield, CA   September 23rd, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Big Daddy Joe does not need to hide from the media. His silence will be greeted by the media with much scrutiny, but he knows how to handle this sort of thing. Obama doesn't need to rein him in – Biden can stand on his own two feet, unlike the fragile Sarah Palin who's been seen running around with foreign policy text books!

jimmy   September 23rd, 2008 9:34 pm ET

THE MEDIA HAS BEEN HARD ON THE HEELS OF GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN TRYING (AND COMPLAINING) TO GET HER TO TALK ABOUT HER MEETINGS WITH WORLD LEADERS? WHO ARE THEY TRYING TO KID? THE MEDIA INTEREST IS SELF-SERVING AND WILL USE PALIN'S REMARKS AGAINST HER.. IS IT NOT OBVIOUS THAT SHE IS GETTING THE VIEWS OF WORLD LEADERS AND HENRY KISSINGER IN PREPARATION FOR HER DEBATE WITH BIDEN. INCIDENTALLY, IS THERE A RUMOR THAT BIDEN MIGHT WITHDRAW THE VP SPOT IN FAVOR OF HILLARY.? CONSIDER BIDEN'S RECENT COMMENT THAT HILLARY IS A BETTER CANDIDATE THAN HIMSELF. AND HIS OFF HANDED CONTRADICTIONS WITH OBAMA'S COMMENTS ON THE AIG BAILOUT. AND OTHER TIDBITS WHICH CRITICS SAY ARE JUST THE TRUE BIDEN. IT WOULD INDEED BE A BOMBSHELL IF JOE BIDEN WITHDREW FROM HIS VP SPOT AND LET HILLARY IN AS THE VP CANDIDATE! THAT WILL BE MOST ELECTRIFYING THAN ANYTHING IN AMERICAN POLITICS.

NO, it's not just us.....   September 23rd, 2008 9:33 pm ET

It is amazing how some of you say Obama will lead us to the food stamp, unemployment or welfare line. During the Primaries, the candidates would visit towns all over our Country and would interview people of all races that suffer financially poor by the Republicans administration (including McCain 95% voting with Bush) being in the White House. There homes had holes in the roof, floors and walls. I can remember this Caucasian couple who said they had worked all their lives and when the only manufacturing company moved over seas, they cried for days (yes, they were receiving food stamps and ect….their unemployment had ended. That’s not Obama’s fault…..

Mike, Syracuse NY   September 23rd, 2008 9:32 pm ET

Yah, yah, yah. Obamaites are full of excuses for Biden as usual. It's standard operating procedure for Dems to have one set of rules for themselves and another for everyone else. Given Biden's well documented history of gaffs, Obama has put a clamp on any ad libbing on his part. Dems you know it, so stop whining about Palin. And when is the last time Obama has talked to anyone without a teleprompter?

David in Illinois   September 23rd, 2008 9:32 pm ET

A key point here: Biden has been on the Sunday news talk shows about 100 billion times. For Palin it's ZERO.
We know pretty much where Biden stands on just about every issue. Or if you don't know it's fairly easy to Google it. If you Google Sarah Palin, the main result you're likely to get is "lipstick."
This is shameful journalism. CALL HER OUT newsmen and women! The GOP is trying to hide her, afraid for their very lives if we'll find out what she's really made of.
McCain, king of the Keating Five (remember that fiasco, newsmen and newswomen?) should retire and Palin should go back to Alaska and her "First Dude."

Sharon Campbell   September 23rd, 2008 9:32 pm ET

I find it hilarious that there are so many people who are blindly saying Palin has what it takes. If all it takes to be VP or President is to be able to give a canned speech and be kept under lock and key the rest of the time, then anyone could do it. You know nothing about her other than what the McCain camp wants you to know. The ironic thing is that it is obvious that the ones who are the most worried about Palin's readiness to be VP are McCain and his campaign.

I see their strategy though. Keep the expectations very low so that no matter what she does it will be seen as positive. Say what you want about Obama's experience, but he is just presidential. He thinks about things and America needs that in its next leader. Unfortunately McCain just reacts. He has no vision and Palin is obviously not ready if she is afraid of standing up to the media.

I like that Biden is a bit of a gafffemachine. He comes off as a guy who cares and who wears his heart on his sleeve. I think the fact that he questioned the ad about McCain and that he tells it like it is are both positives for Obama's campaign. I mean, Obama is showing that he is willing to surround himself with poeple who can disagree with him……its called checks and balances. Palin, on the other hand, will not question McCain at all. Think about that. I would rather have the ticket that can debate with each other about what to do to save America rather than a ticket that thinks they already know the answer no matter what others think.

Sen. Biden can surely speak his own mind during this campaign. If he disagrees with a position taken by Obama on something, then he can choose between being silent or expressing his views. So what?

We all know that many different people are speaking for the Obama campaign: Obama himself, Biden, the various prominent supporters who make speeches in his behalf, and the marketing people who put together his advertising.

These many voices pretty much agree on the basic themes, but some differences on particular issues are to be expected. That is the democratic way.

It is Conservatives who demand not only that all Conservatives must articulate the party line and nothing but, even down to the phrases used.

Obama the REAL Change   September 23rd, 2008 9:13 pm ET

Well that's ONE way of getting in the NEWS….the media and CNN is quick to let Biden be their news when he makes a mistake or misspeak within a speech, but since Palin was picked by McCain that Friday morning, she has been telling lies about Obama and herself and they have been running after her for days, instead of calling her on her LIES, they are to busy begging the McCain camp to allow them to ask her question. It's OK Biden, you still will BE VP.

Elise   September 23rd, 2008 9:10 pm ET

What a garbage story. Oh wait, I'm reading CNN, of course it's garbage.

Biden isn't AFRAID to talk to the press like Palin is. She is terrified and has no idea what she's talking about on ANY issue – particularly with respect to foreign policy. If she talked to the press, she might make a mistake like she did last time – you know, when she said Freddie and Fannie were "tax-payer owned". Whoops! She has NO clue what she's talking about! Don't let anyone know…

Oh wait, you're CNN – you don't actually report the news, so Sarah Palin has nothing to fear.

Sarah is not ready to be VP, and Elvis has REALLY left the building.

Obama the REAL Change   September 23rd, 2008 9:06 pm ET

Thanks God we have ONE VP candidate that isn't running from the media and isn't OFF limits.

What kind of President or VP candidate would get such special treatment when it has been a MUST when running for any one of these IMPORTANT position to be able to show us the voters what they are about….ops………that's right, McCain and camp thanks we are ALL dumb to buy what he selling….and it isn't lip stick……

Biden is the Hand and Obama is the Puppet. Obama needed some experience and hired an old man with gray hair. So maybe some gray hair is not bad about McCain.

Campbell Brown's story tonight about her Road to No where she is trying to criticize Gov Palin, that was a stupid report and waste of CNN money and the Road was already under contract and when she took offfice she had to complete it. Campbell just proved whose side she is on, the old feminist liberal block head, but she is hot! She should be mad for Obama throwing Hillary under the bus.

Sarah Palin is a reformer and the new blood of the Republican party, she is will fight for truth and justice against those thieves. They are digging against her out of fear. Biden is the old Washington that Obama wants to change, so why say he is for change and then hire the problem, the old Washington – Biden.

Obama the REAL Change   September 23rd, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Palin is smarter than anyone thinks…if anyone thinks this then I guess she is smarter then 2% who blog on here, including the person who made such a DUMB comment………..

Any WOMAN will NOT DO in the White House!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maddie, Hartford, Ct.   September 23rd, 2008 8:57 pm ET

We all know (and love) Joe Biden. On the other hand, who the hell is Sara Palin? I guess we'll all find out at the debate. Good luck to the "pitbull with lipstick"…she's going to need it!

denise kroening   September 23rd, 2008 8:57 pm ET

Biden is our man. He doesn't need training and protection like Sarah Palin who should be sitting in her office back in Alaska. Go Biden Go!

Obama the REAL Change   September 23rd, 2008 8:56 pm ET

If the media was doing their JOB, Biden would not be compared to Palin…..He would also have been in the news all most every day because he has made several speeches since Obama picked him as VP, but the media was to busy running after the LIP STICK lady and as she continued to be OFF limits to them. They didn't get any question answered, but WHINED to the people about her not talking to the press. They were the ones who MADE her famous (any woman will not DO for our Country VP). They have allowed McCain and camp to make them look like FOOLSSSSSSSSSS!

Steven - SC   September 23rd, 2008 8:55 pm ET

Biden is hilarious… .bet most people wish he was nominated and not the angryobama……. That's going to become a metaphor – angryobama……

JD in NC   September 23rd, 2008 8:52 pm ET

Wow, a man with decades in public service. He must be hiding something by not talking to the press. Plus, he's so scripted. He never says anything "off the cuff". How mysterious.

This is a fluff article.

Road to Nowhere in light of 1st year law school contracts law: She could've stopped it based on the principle of impossibility. She didn't have to adhere to contracts premised on the existence of funding for a bridge after that very premise was eradicated.

Raluca, Chicago   September 23rd, 2008 8:52 pm ET

I am reading Joe Biden's book "Promises To Keep". The amount of involvement in the destiny of this country and the experience Mr Biden has is astonishing. During the cold war, he was at the negotiating table with Leonid Brezhnev and the prime minister of the USSR on behalf of the United States — just to give an example. So Joe Biden does not need to give interviews or conferences to prove himself. His wisdom and experience are more than enough.

Lissa in Montreal   September 23rd, 2008 8:51 pm ET

The very reluctance of the Republicans to put Sarah Palin in front of an open mic shows their fear that she'll mess up or reveal just how ignorant she is on major issues. The debate should be fun.

Zaley   September 23rd, 2008 8:50 pm ET

Sarah Palin is pretending to be something she's not. All her speeched are well scripted and staged. No reporters allowed. Need I say more?

Alice Newman Center Harbor NH   September 23rd, 2008 8:49 pm ET

"To be fair, the famously talkative Biden has given roughly 90 national and local interviews, according to the campaign. Palin, in contrast, has granted just a handful, including one to People Magazine…."

and that, my friends, says it all!

For those concerned with gender issues, ask yourself would McCain be hiding Palin away from the Press if she were a man? I thought this was the woman who can kill a moose with her bare hands and compares herself, in her own words, to a pitbull in lipstick …

McCain is looking more like a sugar-daddy and less like an equal partner in a campaign ..

Lisa D.   September 23rd, 2008 8:48 pm ET

When it's time to debate Joe Biden, Sarah Palin will call in sick.

Daryl from Seattle   September 23rd, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Biden has spoken to the press plenty in his loooooooooooong political career. We know where he stands, what he's about, and what he believes. America just met Sarah Palin and since we can't all walk up to her and ask questions, we rely on the media to inform us on who she is and what she's about. That's not possible if she hides from them every time the opportunity presents itself for her to show us what she's made of. Don't try and make it seem like Biden is hiding from the press. That's crap.

PUMA   September 23rd, 2008 8:48 pm ET

We don't care about press conferences. We want revenge against the DNC and Obama for stealing the nomination from the one candidate who deserved it:.

Hillary forever.

PUMA for McCain/Palin.

GOP Woman for Obama   September 23rd, 2008 8:46 pm ET

I love Biden! Palin not so much! I will vote for a Democrat for the first time ever because this nation needs help and McCain is not the answer!

John Smith   September 23rd, 2008 8:45 pm ET

The ROAD to no where? Did anyone watch the news clip how Palin built the ROAD to no where in Alaska? What a waste! This is so annoying!

We luv ya' Joe!   September 23rd, 2008 8:45 pm ET

Just remember that, OK? This is going to be one dirty campaign, for sure.

AndrewK   September 23rd, 2008 8:45 pm ET

Well, you see, Biden isn't doing any press conferences because he's too busy interacting with the actual electorate. Palin should be doing a press conference because she's at the UN interacting with dignitaries and the electorate deserves to know why she's there, what her intentions and are, and to have her answer those questions themselves. We really are comparing apples and oranges here.

I think there is a basic expectation that in the 21st century the candidate for VP should be able to interact with the media. It's frightening that people find Sarah's media blackout to be a good thing.

GT in CA   September 23rd, 2008 8:43 pm ET

VP - North Carolina   September 23rd, 2008 8:43 pm ET

There are people screaming about sexism in this campaign. Well I want them all to take a step back, wipe their eyes and realize that McCain's campaign is extremely sexist. They will not let Palin talk unless they give the say so… sounds like a bit of control and not having any trust in her. Don't dress her up and put her out there bit keep a hands off and no questions allowed approach and say others are being sexist towards her… McCain's campaign is the #1 culprit! Heck Campbell Brown challenged the campaign to stop all the nonsense and let her talk to the press!

The self proclaimed pit bull should be up for any challenge! She already said she is ready to be VP… Americans are saying PROVE IT!!!!!

David   September 23rd, 2008 8:43 pm ET

Two weeks??!! Oh yeah, he's really avoiding the press, isn't he?

How long's it been for McCain? Forty-something days? How long for Palin? Never?

Of course, Obama has had at least two in the past week, so there's no denying who the President here is.

Scott   September 23rd, 2008 8:42 pm ET

What, is the Obama campaign afraid of another Biden "blunder" such as his comment about the attack ad on John McCain's ability to use computer technology? I don't hear the media being critical of Senator Biden's lack of press conferences but then again, CNN is the official press secretary of the Obama campaign. So much for the media being fair or equal.

Independent, white female !   September 23rd, 2008 8:41 pm ET

you could not pay me to vote for someone who is hiding from the press! not a republican or a democrat! most independents like myself depend on, on the spot interviews, Q & A sessions and that sort of thing to determine if the person deserves our votes. Palin has shown me that she is clueless and that is the reason why Mccain and his advisors are keeping her away from the press. The fact is, she does not know enough and they expect us to vote for her as VP and possibly as president? no way, no Mccain, no Palin….Obama got my vote!

Noemi in Los Angeles   September 23rd, 2008 8:41 pm ET

Ann Canas   September 23rd, 2008 8:40 pm ET

CNN's John King's attempts to defend the manipulative and transparent shielding of Sarah Palin from reporters and the press corp literally since her selection, are altogether asinine and insulting to anyone with an atom of intelligence and discernment. Ironically that would seem to exclude Palin and include King himself…hopefully.

If his rightist leanings are so compelling, surely Mr. King can fashion more cogent arguments which do not make him appear a lame-witted GOP strategist instead of a national news reporter.

Texas   September 23rd, 2008 8:39 pm ET

What about the interview last Thursday with Katie Couric that was aired last night? Did you guys forget about that? All the media is focussed on is Palin as VP. I don't see CNN interviewing him for the last few weeks except on "Revealing the VPs". This is amazing how the Democrats can't get a break from CNN. At the end, to point out. How about tell everyone there is a "black-out" for Palin for interviews and also the Alaskan government is frustrated they can't talk to their Governor. Only McCain's staff and his lawyers can. Let's be fair here.

John Smith   September 23rd, 2008 8:39 pm ET

What does McCain like about Sara Palin? Her LEGS. But there is really nothing under those legs!!!

Cindy   September 23rd, 2008 8:38 pm ET

Oh puleeze.. Wasn't Biden recently on Meet the Press? Do shows like this not count for anything?

Annie   September 23rd, 2008 8:37 pm ET

We've all seen Joe Biden for weeks now talking all by himself on news shows, morning shows, etc. without note cards. Does anyone (especially women) find this whole situation profoundly sad. John McCain is once again using a woman who may not fare well in this farce to achieve his goal. Would he sell his soul, too?

Scott Tucson   September 23rd, 2008 8:37 pm ET

If the Obama camp were to let Ol Joe Biden talk at every turn, besdies being boring, he's sure to put his foot in his mouth as he often does. Guess the two only have one telepromter and it belongs to Obama.

Bill, MA.   September 23rd, 2008 8:36 pm ET

The republicans have failed again. When republicans get into power Americans suffer. Big business is allowed to rape the nation in every way imaginal. Do we need Obama, or Biden to tell us what anyone can see? The people are the country, and Bush, McCain, and other republican sleaze have done nothing to put the people first. The news media is just feathering their nest with hours of useless news. It's time to sweep out the dirt, and start anew.

Trang, Fremont, CA   September 23rd, 2008 8:35 pm ET

The implication of this article is amazing. Joe Biden is out there, speaking to people. He is accessible. He speaks his mind, although at times, say something that is awkward for the campaign to handle. However, he speaks the truth, and Obama accepts this knowing his tendency to make gaffes because he sees many other greater qualities in Joe Biden. I love both of them.

Sarah Palin, on the other hand, once discovered she lied about the 'Bridge to Nowhere' still continue to lie to the public unashamedly w/ this 'Thanks, but no thanks.' The campaign protect her from interviews, and we remain clueless about her, and she fills no small position – it's a VP post, a heartbeat from the presidency.

We all make mistakes, but we can learn from mistakes and improve. Sarah, once found out that she lied to the people, still continue to lie to the people, and proud of it.

Joe Biden, yes, he did plagiarized, but he apolized and said it was a dumb thing to do. Joe Biden did vote for the war, but he expressed remorse knowing what he knows now. That's why we love Joe Biden. Nobody is perfect. He makes mistakes, he apologized, and he improves. Nobody expect perfection. None of us are. But we want them to be truthful when they talk to us.

Let see…..Joe Biden has asked a cripple to stand up and take a bow.
He said FDR new what to do when the Great Depression occurred
even though he wasn't President ……AND…..he said FDR went on TV to talk to the American people…..even though TV had not been invented
for another DECADE. WHO ARE THE DEMMES calling OLD and senile???????

Shannon   September 23rd, 2008 8:34 pm ET

We know Biden. We dont know Sarah Palin. Thats a dumb question….

Courtney H   September 23rd, 2008 8:33 pm ET

This is a really bad case of false equivalency.

Biden hasn't stopped talking and answering questions long enough to hold a press conference. The guy has probably answered more questions from both the press and voters than anyone over the past few weeks. When else would he be able to give the small gaffes he gets called on on a daily basis. Good thing no one pays Biden any attention at all.

Hopefully, he will be much more useful in an Obama White House, getting legislation through Congress. That and his foreign policy experience should be helpful in actual governance. Can't say the same about Palin, but then again, no one can say either way since she is in witness protection.

Renee   September 23rd, 2008 8:30 pm ET

Who says we know everything about Biden? I don't. I know he got very few votes in the primaries, said that Hillary would probably have been a better VP candidate, said that the Obama ad accusing McCain of not being able to use a computer was "terrible", and that Obama has had to reprimand him twice in the past couple of days about shooting off his mouth.

Just read a comment by an Obama supporter asking CNN "not to bend over backward being fair". Now THAT is what is scary! Win at any cost, will you? And you're afraid of Sarah Palin and what we DON'T know about her? Well I know enough about YOU! You actually ask CNN not to be FAIR???????? I think that pretty much says it all.

KG   September 23rd, 2008 8:30 pm ET

Joe, best thing you can do is to keep your mouth shut. If nothing else, but to keep from inadvertantly blurting out that your Presidential candidate has no experience; has ties with felons, radicals, and terrorists which he refuses to explain; has a tax plan that is guaranteed to wreck the economy; and who, when it came his chance to take a stand on an issue through his votes as a senator, simply voted "present" 70% of time.

Former Dem voting McCain   September 23rd, 2008 8:29 pm ET

Biden's an idiot. Read this:

In gaffe, Biden says FDR led when market crashed

WASHINGTON — Vice presidential candidate Joe Biden says today's leaders should take a lesson from the history books and follow fellow Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt's response to a financial crisis.

"When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, 'Look, here's what happened,'" Barack Obama's running mate recently told the "CBS Evening News."

Except, Republican Herbert Hoover was in office when the stock market crashed in October 1929. There also was no television at the time; TV wasn't introduced to the public until a decade later, at the 1939 World's Fair.

FDR was elected three years later when voters denied Hoover a second term. The Democratic challenger appealed to the "forgotten man" by promising a "new deal" to solve the Depression era.

Democrats usually like to remind the public that a Republican was president during the 1929 stock market crash. During the 2004 presidential election, John Kerry's campaign repeatedly cited Hoover as the last president until George W. Bush to oversee a loss of jobs during his time in office.

Biden was commenting on the stock market crash when he said leaders should explain the current economic crisis and how to solve it to the public.

"Part of what being a leader does is to instill confidence, is to demonstrate what he or she knows what they are talking about and to communicating to people … this is how we can fix this," Biden said.

VP   September 23rd, 2008 8:27 pm ET

Your point?

Joe Biden has been well vetted over his career and people know what to expect.

However for Darah Palin, the Republicnan chauvanistic nature has not allowed them to allow her to say anything.

Maybe a bright and whitty girl but we know nothing about her other than her Alaskan miniseries of possible corruption or not.

We don't know, in a week when the FBI is taking about 20+ banking firms inot investigations and corruption.

Make the CEOs of these banks and their senior henchmen pay the price and let the American people know that their conduct is not acceptable and payouts will not be given.

Outrageous……………when Senators of all colors are scared to the point of panick.. Mr. Paulsen should be investigated as well as Bernake and Palin.

Jim   September 23rd, 2008 8:23 pm ET

The nation knows Sen. Biden well, for his long career in the Senate and particularly on the foreign affairs committee. No one, not even Republican opponents, doubts he is totally qualified to be VP in a crisis. Plus Biden has given roughly 90 national and local interviews,

Few people outside of Alaska know Gov. Palin well – including McCain himself! She has given almost no interviews or faced tough questions. We live in a democracy (at least I hope so)! Our candidates are morally obligated to reveal themselves and explain their policies to the media – even if they don't like the media. We do not elect candidates just because they were anointed by another candidate (McCain)!

Marcpatriot   September 23rd, 2008 8:18 pm ET

Biden and the others have been making the rounds for years, but with legitimate concerns over her qualifications if not fitness, Palin should be eager to convince voters of her preparedness and ability to think on her feet. She owes her country and the process nothing less. Instead, she is confined to controlled events and scripted remarks. On face value, this is both suspicious and alarming. This conspicuous hiding ought to be the central question hanging over her candidacy and dominate the national dialogue about her. If the far right seems willing to entrust our nation to a stranger based on superficial first impression, the rest of us need to all the more vigilant. For unless she receives scrutiny and starts to reveal herself we have no way of knowing if we are asked to put a viper into our midst.

How could you even compare the two…first o all, you all had no interest to speak with him, since barbie doll came on the scene…second, everybody knows what is on Joe Bidens mind & we also know his beliefs.
The media have been made to look like a joke–they have allowed themselves to be the mccains puppet-what ever happened to real journalist? Where oh where are the Edward R. Morrows of the world-this is when we need you most.

America wake up, neither party will fend for the American Hard working people, we put money in our 401k's to save for retirement and they want to tax us to death to bail out the riches people on wall street. They don't care about the dreams we have for our children or our future retirement, they want us to work until we are 80 funding the government.

I say no retirement no taxes no work. Lets go to their houses and demand a place to stay, eat from their tables and drink their wine. This country is not the great America which we thought we all love. We live in the land of the rich and greedy.

Hey Nightingale, here are your answers:

a. Most of the time, they are called criminals. Those without a job or below the tax line, we'd usually call unemployed and blame the Republicans, because that's the truth.

b. Who is this Hussein? The candidate is Barack Obama. His middle name is Hussein, but that would be like calling you Bob, right Billy?

c. Right, and McCain never has "senior moments." Perhaps we shoud refer back to a week ago when he decided the fundamentals of the economy were sound.

d. Infantile.

As for PUMA, that's just a Republican fed outfit. Perhaps a few of the members were legit, but we all know it for what it is now. You can drop the charade.

Tim   September 23rd, 2008 8:00 pm ET

And Obama went a year and a half without giving interviews, then when he fell behind, he all of a sudden found the need for the press.

Who cares, the press doesn't serve a useful purpose anymore.

Karey   September 23rd, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Where is the outrage from the Media and the American Public that we can only see photos and hear speeches from Palin, but no one can question her??? What kind of idiot votes for a Vice President who won't answer any questions until they have been told what to say by the Bush/McCain staff????? If she is so great (as McCain claims) – let HER prove it!!

RICK DAVIS PAID BY FREDDIE MAC
One of the giant mortgage companies at the heart of the credit crisis paid $15,000 a month to a firm owned by Senator John McCain’s campaign manager from the end of 2005 through last month, according to two people with direct knowledge of the arrangement. The disclosure contradicts a statement Sunday night by Mr. McCain that the campaign manager, Rick Davis, had no involvement with the company for the last several years. Mr. Davis’s firm received the payments from the company, Freddie Mac, until it was taken over by the government this month along with Fannie Mae, the other big mortgage lender whose deteriorating finances helped precipitate the cascading problems on Wall Street, the people said.

Matt   September 23rd, 2008 7:55 pm ET

You do realize that tomorrow morning we will hear all about Biden's lack of press availability from the McCain camp. Yay. Way to feed the beast CNN…when it shoudl be eating its own tail from all the lying it's been doing. Perhaps you'd like to simply skip doing factchecks from now on as well? I mean, this is blatantly an unrealistic attempt to look balanced and skipping the factchecks would make that sooo much easier if you did that as well.

Reese from NC   September 23rd, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Can you be more idiotic CNN. There is a difference between avoiding the press all together and not having press conferences. Biden has not stopped press access. He answeres questions when they are asked. He does not have a campaign standing guard at his door saying no questions allowed. Biden has made an issue of press access not simple press conferences. There is more than one way to have interaction with the press you know. It is obsurd. It is infuriating how the you keep playing up to the McCain/Palin campaign game. You have listened to their talking points for so long that you have started to repeat them as if they were fact.
Grow a Pair CNN.

We Get It In California   September 23rd, 2008 7:53 pm ET

I'm a young person, and my friends and I couldn't care less about JMac's POW experience. We would if he didn't use it for political gain. We're not stupid and if he doesn't care about tarnishing his past, why should we care about honoring it?

I'm a new adult (3 months now), and I can't understand why John is running? He clearly doesn't like Americans or the Government. He should be in charge of a failing Fortune 500 company or something. At least he could walk away with a huge severance payment, like the rest of his buddies.

I'm for Barack because he's for the people, even newly adults, like me and my friends. We’re voting for him on 11/4/08, and then we’re going to ride the waves. Hopefully by the time we get back, Barack will have won.

maynard hopkins wi   September 23rd, 2008 7:51 pm ET

neither candidate should give interviews, it would be detrimental to them… the way the press and mediators find everthing negative about what is said… the news media and mediators should all be banned from all politcal gatherings

people will learn the facts at the debates then we can all watch the mediators and the news media have a frenzy about what was said.

The Nightingale Sings in Berkley Square   September 23rd, 2008 7:49 pm ET

Biden calls those who pay taxes patriotic. What does he call those who do not pay taxes?

Obama calls Midwesterners names and also refers to lipstick on pigs. What does that mean Hussein?

Obama says he will visit the 57 states. What states is he referring too?

Obama has a funny name and is scary/. I don't trust America's Freedom with this guy who lies about McCain. Obama is pathetic and then there is his wife, who just became proud to be an American.

When you go to the polls remember obama and his mean words.

Start demanding why Palin is not being available for a press conference. People demand answers to her view on domestic and foreign policies.

Matt   September 23rd, 2008 7:45 pm ET

First, why should he bother holding press conferences when you would publish your stories underneath total SMOKE SCREEN FLUFF like stories about Palin's speed dating at the U.N. in a transparent effort to give her the false appearance of having foreign policy and international relations credentials?

Second, why should he bother when the press doesn't have the integrity to call it like it is and say what I said above about the NONSENSE the McCain/Palin campaign is selling…liek this U.N. farce?

Lastly, this is totally misleading garbage CNN and you should be ashamed. Biden walks the walk and talks the talk and campaigns all by himself like a big boy while Palin hides in the corner, does whatever she's told, says whatever she's programmed to say and participates in lying and what can only be called a ruse to trick the people of this country into thinking she is safe to elect and put one step from the Presidency.

Shame on you CNN…this is a blatant attemtp to appear balanced when all it does is show your willingness to pander. CONAN THE DELAWARIAN SCOFFS AT YOUR PETTY RIDICULE!!!

Talk about scripted speeches (re Palin) I'll bet Obama wishes he could script Biden's or muzzle him. Seems nobody knows what he's talking about fifty percent of the time. The other fifty percent do not care what he says, and most wish he would just go away.

Now all the folks who make fun of Sarah Palin and her ability to shoot and dress a moose or shoot a bear should remember. They have a Broadway play that's run for years about the great Annie Oakley — the best markswoman in the world. Even composer Irving Berlin scripted the ideal for Sarah that asks and replies: "Can you make a pie? Neither can I." Let it go guys. Sarah's a winner.

Biden is doing a great job with interviews and I am getting to know even more.

Palin, forget it! We have no clue just where she stands and that is a great concern.

I think Palin and McCain should not do any more trail campaigns just let us vote of their track record alone.

Since Palin and McCain are not talking to media…just tells me that they have no respect for us as citizens.

They can just go home now and let us decide.

Mikey   September 23rd, 2008 7:39 pm ET

All we have heard from Palin is prepared speeches and canned lines, mostly taken from those speeches. Her ABC interview was cut up so no one really saw the whole thing, and she was frequently unsteady and the Hannity interview was worthless, unless you like Hannity as a GOP cheerleader.

So far, all we know is that she can lie emphatically, as in "I told Congress thanks, but no thanks" over and over – along with something like 50 other whoppers she has told.

So, unless she goes out and proves herself on the campaign trail every day for the next 6 weeks, with lots of unscripted media availability, we should say "Thanks, but no thanks" to the possibility of a Palin Presidency. That's a bridge to nowhere we just can't afford.

Biden is getting very little coverage even when he does talk. The media only seems to report the few gaffes that he has made. Seriously, out of the 90 national and local interviews, how many of those have been reported on? I haven't heard one positive comment from the media on any of those speeches. 90, compared to a handful of carefully scripted interviews by Palin. Since Day One, he has been talking to and interacting with the voters at the campaign stops but very little was highlighted by the press in follow ups. How many town halls has Palin done where she takes questions from the public? McCain stopped giving anything but prepared speeches that he reads verbatim because he can't stay on message and makes gaffes and he refused to take questions from the press or the public long ago. This is way lopsided, CNN.

Michael   September 23rd, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Interesting how CNN feels the need to do a little "tit-for-tat" jounalism here.

First of all Sen. Biden has done the interviews, he has taken the questions, people pretty uch know what his stance is on issues. When Biden is out stumping he tells you what his positin is on the issues.

Sarah Palin, regurgitates the same lines all the time…

"I Said No Thanks to that Bridge"
"I call him the "First Dude of Alaska"
"I'm gonna "shake" up Washington"
"I put the State Check book on-line"

Blah Blah Blah….

No mention of how she is gonna "Shake up" Washington
You said yes before you said no.
Who cares about the "First Dude" except to say he is as corrupt as you.
How bout Sen. Obama pushed through legislature to put the Fed's "Check-book" on-line. Benn there done that!

Please for the sake of our Country, McCain and Palin please go away.

sick of cnn's subtle bias   September 23rd, 2008 7:35 pm ET

CNN, what is the purpose of your headline: "Biden not Holding Press Conferences Either" …? Clearly you intend to excuse Palin and the McCain campaign for intentionally covering up how shallow her intellect is, and how frightening her ignorance about the nation and the world.

Palin is hiding from the law in Alaska. She and McCain are hiding from the press in America. Obama and Biden are not hiding anything. Please don't give readers the impression that they are.

Sammy   September 23rd, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Two weeks isnt bad. And yes the debate is coming up. However he must start talking to the press again soon even if its just for show and nothing important is talked about.

Michelle ATL   September 23rd, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Biden we know, its Palin that we are all afraid of.

Joe Biden has an excellent record, and is well liked. He is established in world affairs, he doesn't have to prove himself.

Palin is scary….

She tried to convince us that Obama was picking on her …HELLO PALIN Obama hasn't even mentioned you.

You are a liar……………..

Nunya   September 23rd, 2008 7:31 pm ET

How laughable to 'notice' that Biden isn't holding press conferences. Biden has been a prominent public figure on the national scene for years. He has held many such conferences during that period. He has held many events during the last few weeks, whether they are technically 'press conferences' directly between him and reporters or other types of events.

Palin, however, is new to the national scene. People naturally are more curious to find out more about her and how she handles herself, and it is not just idle curiosity. Those can be very important things to know before electing someone to high office.

To compare the two situations as if they were two peas in a pod is simply ludicrous.

anyonmous   September 23rd, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Missy M   September 23rd, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Thank you CNN for being fair. People forget that Palin has given several very long interviews (the transcripts are online), there is a book out about her (it's available in bookstores) and most networks have exhaustively interviewed her friends, family and political enemies in the past few weeks. As well, most of Wasilla's and the state of Alaska's docuements and meeting transcripts are online – the information is out there. If people don't know about her, it's because they don't want to know. It's easier to complain that "she's hiding from the media" and believe half-truths then to actually read an article online.

mitchell   September 23rd, 2008 7:30 pm ET

HE'S PREPARING FOR THE DEBATES! WE'VE SEEN HIM FOR 36 YEARS! WE KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM! WE WANT TO KNOW ABOUT MOOSE HUNTING MOM! WHAT IS HER VIEW ON THE BEST WAY TO SOLVE THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN IRAQ? IRAN? RUSSIA? ISRAEL? LEBANON? VENEZUELA? BOLIVIA? CUBA? THE MISSILE DEFENSE SHIELD IN EASTERN EUROPE? OUR DETERIORATING RELATIONSHIP WITH RUSSIA, AFTER THE FOOLISH ATTACK ON SOUTH OSSETIA? WHAT ROLE DID RANDY SCHEUNEMAN HAVE IN LOBBYIST TIES TO GEORGIA? UNFORTUNATELY, MCCAIN'S PRESS CONFERENCE HAD 2 QUESTIONS, SO WE COULDN'T ASK HIM MUCH EITHER. SHOULDN'T SARAH BE HELPING MCCAIN GET OUT HIS MESSAGE ON "SECONDARY ISSUES,AT LEAST? NEVERMIND I'LL JUST VOTE DEM!

Alabama fan for Obama   September 23rd, 2008 7:29 pm ET

I do not see anything Biden has said that I consider a gaff!
He just speaks what he feels , he knows Hillary is capable and would have made a good choice and would have helped the campaign …So what he said was the truth, so why is that a gaff?
And when he said he thought the ad about McCain was terrible , well so did I and I feel the one in Spanish is in poor taste . But I am still voting for Obama. I don't like many ads on either side , they do not always speak the whole truth….McCain has done worse with his. SO
When does speaking the truth tranlate into a gaff?

If they would turn Palin loose we might find out what real gaffs are!

Al in Alabama   September 23rd, 2008 7:29 pm ET

The only time Biden closes his mouth is when he's covering up something.

Shannon, Independent Voter   September 23rd, 2008 7:28 pm ET

We already know who Joe Biden is, we know nothing about palin. It looks like the mccain camp is really trying to hide her from the media and from answering questions about anything.

Does mccain really expect us to vote for someone we know nothing about, and who is shrouded in secrecy. I have had enough secrecy and lies from the Bush admin, I am not about to vote in another person/group who is full of lies, deceit, and secrecy.

lgioia   September 23rd, 2008 7:28 pm ET

Palin is smarter than anyone thinks. She is keeping people and
the press excited and wondering, just like col. Parker did with
Elvis Presley. Then, watch out. This lady is smart and will
outsmart the best of you. And I am one that is rooting for her and
McCain!

Michael   September 23rd, 2008 7:27 pm ET

Good thing Biden isn't holding press conferences who knows what other nonsense would come out of his mouth. Like how FDR as president explained the stock market crash on TV 3 years before he was elected and ten years before it was available. And democrats are saying the McCain is losing his mind.

Danielle   September 23rd, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Oh, please!! As we've constantly been reminded by republicans, "Biden has been in Washington for more than 30 years", so there's much about him that the American people are already familiar with. Sarah Palin has only been in the spotlight for 3 weeks. The comparison is futile. This particular blog article was unnecessary. Next?

Democrat....no matter what!   September 23rd, 2008 7:25 pm ET

We don't need press conferences. We just need for everybodty to take away the priviledge of having the Republicans govern again! They had 8 years to prove what they can accomplish with their ideology of the Republican way of governing and, still, people are actually thinking of throwing their vote away to McSame!! These Republicans lost their chance to govern this country! We can't afford one more Republican presidency anymore! It's a matter of life and death!

David E for Obama/Biden   September 23rd, 2008 7:24 pm ET

Joe's been in the spotlight

Enough!!!   September 23rd, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Why should he hold any press conferences if Palin is allowed so much 'privacy'. Please let the McCain camp complain about this. Being the known liars that they are, they probably will.

Too Much to Ask in CA   September 23rd, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Has Biden refused to answer questions? Seems like he is out there everyday talking to the press through interviews. He also ran for President and participated in multiple debates.

On the otherhand, I have no idea if Gov.Palin can think on her own.

What if she thinks bear markets can be fixed by shooting and skinning them?

This is not news. Do not bend over backwards to be fair in your coverage.

Peter (CA)   September 23rd, 2008 7:22 pm ET

How is this a story?

McCain has not had a conference in 6 weeks. Palin has not had one and the campaign sees no reason to put her out there.

Biden had one two weeks ago and he has been out on the trail since.

Jess   September 23rd, 2008 7:21 pm ET

AMEN Gorbashov!!! Exactly we know everything about him and he was on a lot of shows!! Palin nothing! ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!

stella801   September 23rd, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Biden is out there everyday talking up a storm. We have seen him in the primary debates and seen him in action for many years. He doesn't need to reveal who he is. Palin has been hiding from and avoiding the press and the public. Other than her scripted speeches and "field trips" ti various places, we know nothing of how she will react. I can't wait for the debate.

Meka   September 23rd, 2008 7:20 pm ET

IT'S UNDERSTANDABLE THAT MCCAIN DOESN'T WANT PALIN TO HAVE INTERVIEWS. . .HAVE YOU HEARD HER, WHEN SHE OPEN'S HER MOUTH?
