The Obama campaign released a new ad Tuesday taking aim at McCain's foreign cars.

(CNN) – Barack Obama’s campaign released an ad Tuesday attacking John McCain for saying he has bought American cars his entire life, following reports the Republican nominee currently owns three foreign-made vehicles.

“I've bought American literally all my life, and I'm proud,” McCain told Detroit TV station WXYZ in an interview.

But Newsweek reported last week that McCain and wife Cindy own 13 cars, including three foreign automobiles: a Lexus, a Volkswagen and a Honda. McCain also told the New York Times last year that he bought his daughter, Meghan, a Toyota Prius. He later denied the purchase and said Meghan bought the car herself.

This is the latest in a campaign by the Obama team to portray McCain as wealthy and out of touch with ordinary Americans. Last month, Democrats jumped when McCain said he wasn’t sure how many homes he owns.

The ad will start running in Michigan, the auto-manufacturing capital of the United States, on Wednesday.

Obama released a second ad Tuesday claiming that while McCain was on vacation in Bermuda, he promised to protect tax breaks for American businesses that “hide their profits offshore.” McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said Obama is guilty of the same practice.

“Whether he is opposing additional oil drilling while decrying high gas prices or blasting earmarks despite his requests for a billion dollars in pork barrel spending for his home state, Barack Obama has a stronger record of hypocrisy than he does making change in Washington,” Bounds said in a statement.

I don't care how many cars he has and who the manufacturer is, but this is just another one of his lies that he likes to throw out there. McShame will say and do just about anything to get the applause. And stop that rediculous smile after you think you have said someting that should garner applause. It looks too fake and scary. Your smile doesn;t even look genuine. Seriously, you are too rich and have been too pampered to know what the American people are going through. Stop the sleaze slinging so that the Dem don't have to do it either. Issues please.

jim, kansas city MO   September 23rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

OK so his wife and his daughter buy foreign cars, what are you suggesting? Is he to force his wife and daughter to buy domestic cars?
He himself buys domestic cars, that the fact.

Bottom line, how many houses and how many cars he owns thats his private matter. Last time I checked we were capitalistic society (not socialist or communist), you work hard and smart you make more money than most of population, inculding bloggers here (me too) wasting time here as supposed to be working.

If your waiting for a handout and free stuff it might be bad news for you come November

Dale   September 23rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

I have worked in the automotive industry as an engineering manager for over 20 years. My knowledge and experience has lead me to purchase a foregn car built here in USA. I most likely will never own another domestic car.

America think for you   September 23rd, 2008 4:31 pm ET

$700 billion to bail out wall street how about main street? America do you realize that that $700 billion that you will spend will be use to bail out Chinese banks and other foreign banks bad business and then they will sell these business back to us American. We should not let this to happen because the same mess will come back again in wall street. Wall Street greed, big CEO Payout need to have control over them. This $700 billion just show you that the republicans do not care. Congress please do not let George Bush rush you and us American into this mess. Bush has four months in power and he does not care of whatever mess that $700 billion will make.

Who cares what kind and how many cars he owns, when are you gonna question what kind of under ware he wears what kind of t -shirts does wear, his after shave lotion, soap, tooth paste, come on quit acting like spoilled rotted toddlers, try standing in front of a mirrow for a few seconds and ad lib being an adult, you people make me sick.

McCain is sooooo out of touch.

Pat - Overland Park, KS   September 23rd, 2008 4:30 pm ET

The point of the add is to expose Senator McCain as someone who cannot be trusted. He says one thing but does another. In other words he lies.

I heard a radio ad this morning that stated Senator McCain was for stem cell research. Since when?

Now he speaks of alternative energy and all that goes with it, but the mantra of the convention was "drill, baby drill".

Senator McCain call Senator Obama the elitist, but Senator McCain owns 7 home and 13 cars.

It is important to expose the lies, because we have already had 8 years of that. No more McCain, no way, no how.

Sherry   September 23rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

I think this is a credible ad. If you want to be President of the "United States," then it is your obligation to buy "American." You are to lead by example!

The Nightingale Sings in Berkley Square   September 23rd, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Hey get real. Who gives a rat's you know what.

Hey Biden and Obama, I have some news for you.

I guess I am patriotic, since I pay income tax. I think you called those 40% of Americans who do not pay any taxes unpatriotic.

You Mr. Biden are pathetic, I wonder how come you are so poor when you son is a federal lobbyist? I wonder if he pays taxes. Is your son patriotic Mr. Biden?

Why do you democrats have to label everyone? Why does Obama call women pigs and people in the Mid West bitter people. Why to you lie and say McCain can't use a computer?

You Mr. Biden and Mr. Obama belong in the pig pen with all the big pigs. I am sure

Carol   September 23rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

I have a really hard time believing that how many cars McCain has and what they are is some sort of omen about how bad he might be as president...isnt it interesting that no one is out digging the dirt on Obama....oh wait....it is only the republicans that have dark secrets hidden away and are so powerful as to single handedly bring down our economy!!!!!!!!!!! Stop and take time to really listen to the issues and not the hipe and spin going on...........

Melissa - Wisconsin   September 23rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

The point isn't the FOREIGN cars..plenty of people have foreign cars!

It's that McCain LIED to Auto workers in Michigan, saying he has only ever bought American cars.

The problem is that he is lying to people to get votes!!

David   September 23rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

My last Honda was made in Ohio. My wife's BMW was made in South Carolina. VW will soon be made in Tennessee. Nissan is made in Tennessee. Many Toyotas, Mercedes, KIA, etc., etc., etc., are made in the USA. Only a fool would have produced ths ad.

hershey   September 23rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Who cares? Foreign cars are better made and last longer.

More McCain lies!!!   September 23rd, 2008 4:27 pm ET

McCain owns a Japanese car. Who should care? NO ONE!

McCain emphasized that he only buys American cars, but really owns three foreign cars. Who should care? EVERYONE!

Georgia's polls opened today and Atlanta's gas stations are out of gas. Hmm. What a coincidence. How about a report on whether frustration at the gas pump will affect how Atlanta votes.

Rich   September 23rd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Now that's not nice. Don't people know that everytime McCain successfully has skin cancer removed from his face he celebrates by buying a car?

Also, why doesn't McCain ever wear a flag pin? Seriously, I thought that is what Republicans use to judge the level of love for our country. So what does that say about McCain? Or, what does that say about how stupid the Republicans can be. And that's no lie.

LSC-Indy   September 23rd, 2008 4:26 pm ET

OBAMA 08!!

Harry   September 23rd, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I wouldn't care about Senator McCain's personal automobile fleet and neither would the press, I expect, if the Senator, himself, hadn't brought it up. He was trying to make himself look good by telling a Michigan audience that he exclusively owned American cars. Now that we learn that the facts are otherwise, he deserves to suffer the consequences. The cars aren't the issue; Senator McCain's "say anything to get elected" position is the issue.

Vinit   September 23rd, 2008 4:25 pm ET

This coming from the man who pledged to run an honest campaign and who promised a "different kind of politics." Both Obama and McCain are worthless.

lsufootball   September 23rd, 2008 4:24 pm ET

he didn't say he has ONLY bought american made cars his whole life, he said he has bought them...if he has 13 cars and only 3 are foreign, then that would mean he currently owns 10 domestic cars...i would say that he is almost singlehandedly carrying the american automobile industry...

Nicole In NE   September 23rd, 2008 4:24 pm ET

I think the point they are making is that McCain keeps lying over, and over and over again.....

I personally could give a crap less how many houses and cars McCain owns. I do care however if he is trying to paint Obama as elitist and is ridiculouly rich himself.

Factcheck has been WAY more in Obama's corner these days. The "sex education" for Kindergartners crossed the line for me. I am all for them protecting kids against sexual predators.

Guess who else lies and misleads all the time – George W.!

I certainly for someone who cares and will fight for the next generations'problems and I believe that person is Obama.

Maria, Miami   September 23rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

I could care less how many cars he owns or what type of cars. What I do care about are the lies. If you own foreign cars, say so. I own a Toyota, but I don't go around bragging that I only buy American. I am just shocked at McCain's behaviour. What happend to the McCain of 2000? I doubt he'll be able to deal with his conscious when all this is over.

Heather, Cleveland, OH   September 23rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

McCain – Lying through that cheezy grin of his. Palin – Lying through her lipstick.

I'm sick of the both of them.

Someone get the hook and pull these two yahoos from the stage.

Whoa, John LIED to the autoworkers. Now he's gonna have to pay the consequences.

*anonymous*   September 23rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Who cares how many cars he has? If I were rich I would have more than one car too. Hell, I'd have about 20. If you can afford it, buy it. Isn't that helping the economy?

Dave in Atlanta   September 23rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

The election is going to some really petty levels right now. I saw it coming when McCain ran the "celebrity" ad, but now both ads are running ads that are misleading at best, and downright lies at worst.

soy   September 23rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Again and again people are missing the point. The point of the ad isn't that he bought a foreign car its the fact that he panders for votes even to the extent of lying to get votes. And that's the point of the ad and not that he bought a foreign car

bonna   September 23rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

This is a prime example, that the rich and uneducated need not run for president, they see nothing but money!!!

Bridgette-PA   September 23rd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

"Mark" – McPain's ads against OBAMA aren't about 'the issues" either. Did you make the ame statement about him? I doubt it. :)

OBAMA/BIDEN08!

Heather, Cleveland, OH   September 23rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

I say, "Pull the ad". People are too stupid to see the point that McCain is just a pandering liar and think of it as an attack on people who own foreign cars. I can't believe how many voters in this country refuse to pull their head out of their butt and vote for the only real choice left.

Dian   September 23rd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

I think most of you missed the point. He lied about always buying American made cars. He didn't need to lie about it. If he'll lie about something like that....what else will he lie to us about.

Also, keep in mind a lot of people lost their jobs because American made couldn't compete with foreign made.... It's a little bit of salt on the wound.

Ellen in Ohio   September 23rd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Aren't the most popular cars sold in America made by Honda? I'd bet that the MAJORITY of cars on the road today are by "foreign" manufacturers...but made right here in the USA. I know that in my area, Toyota is a huge employer of my fellow Americans. This is just petty petty petty, and reeks of desperation by the Obama campaign.

Nowhere in there does McCain state that he buys ONLY American automobiles.

We need to know these things because he is lying about issues that do matter to us (or me, if you don't care) ! If he gets to the white house you'll wish you had watched these adds before the election. I don't need another four years of flip flopping and lies from Bush with a new makeover! Get it together and read through the lines – I'm sure you're much smarter then that!!!!

TO

A LIAR, FRAUD, SAD, ANGRY, BITTER, SELF-ABSORBED, ELITIST OLD MAN. ALL TO WIN AN ELECTION.

I WONDER IF HE WILL THINK IT IS WORTH IT WHEN HE LOSES IN NOVEMBER.

IF, BY SOME CHANCE HE SHOULD WIN, THE COUNTRY WILL BE THE BIGGEST LOSER OF ALL! AND HE THE GAUL TO USE "COUNTRY FIRST" AS HIS CAMPAIGN SLOGAN!

Susan, Pennsylvania   September 23rd, 2008 4:11 pm ET

I could not care less how many cars he has, nor which countries they come from.

I do care about his campaign and the media blackout they think they can get away with now. Obviously he thinks he is entitled to the Presidency. What other explanation could there be?

Mark   September 23rd, 2008 4:09 pm ET

It shouldn't matter how many car's he owns or where the Companies are from. From what I know, almost ALL of the car companies have factories in the States that employ United States Citizens to work in those factories.

If he bought a honda, a nissan or a toyota, chances are better then good that the money trickled down to Ohio, Tennessee or any other of the states that they have plants in (Toyota has 13 plants in the UNITED STATES).

Just because he didn't buy his cars from Detroit doesn't mean he's unamerican or telling lies when he says he buys American Made Cars.

The issue here should be that Obama isn't talking about McCain's stances on the issues and how they differ. Instead, he expects us to vote for him because he has one house or one car (which in itself is a lark).

If Obama hit McCain on the issues, it would probably be a completely different race this year, however, he doesn't really seem to know where he stands on issues so maybe thats not an option.

Barbara Baum   September 23rd, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Excuses are the tools of the incompetend and that's what we are going to get when either one of those two is elected – excuses. I don't care about their cars , I don't care what color they are, if their wives are rich, poor, pretty, ugly, smart or dumb, I don't care if their kids are cute, in trouble or honor students, what I care about is them keeping their word to us which isn't going to happen. All we are going to get when this is over are more excuses regardless of which one wins. Everyone knows the old saying don't make any promises you can't keep I just wish some of those politicans would take that to heart.

To all you McCainiacs whining about "Who cares how many cars he owns?"

I agree. However, I don't like it when people flat-out lie. Why did he tell those automakers in Michigan that he only buys US cars? He didn't have to say that. The Michiganders aren't going to vote or not vote for him because he owns a foreign car, so why state an obvious, easily-verifiable lie?

Because John McCain has no respect for the truth. He has lied repeatedly throughout this campaign and so has Sarah Palin. I won't vote for blatant in-your-face liars!

Dace   September 23rd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

The point is McSame is super wealthy flying around in his wife's private jet and lying all the time. He is the one that brought the elite question to the table so he is the one that made this non-issue and issue. He has nothing real so he has to keep trying to marginalize Obama – of course Obama has to answer back and tell true story – McSame is the super rich and elitist that only serves to make rich republicans richer.

Independent-Latina-for-OBAMA   September 23rd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

FUNNY. McCain keeps getting 'caught' in things that clearly defines him as the ........... fabulously wealthy he & his wife are! Which is fine, I suppose, BUT......... when..........

Jon   September 23rd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Aren't some Hondas made in America? I know there's a Honda plant in Marysville, OH, but I don't know what they make there. A car made in America by "foreign" automakers seems more American than American companies who make their cars in Canada and Mexico.

As long as the car is made in America, I don't think it should be considered "foreign".

Dave   September 23rd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Wow, I'm amazed at how many of you are completely missing the point here.

No, I don't think too many people are surprised at the number of cars he owns. The man is filthy rich...Of course he owns more cars than most of us. The problem is that he LIED AGAIN.

I used to respect John McCain and I used to believe all of that "Maverick" stuff. Now I just realize that he will tell anyone anything to get elected.

How many times are you going to let this man lie to you before you start to pay attention?

sugardaddydating   September 23rd, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Mcain backtracks on a lot of things but a lot of foreign car manufacturers do have plants here in the USA so that does involve American Jobs. Mcaiin is a little out of touch to say the least if he is not sure how many houses he has.

Alice   September 23rd, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Having not seen the ad, and only read the summary, I sure hope the ad emphasizes the flip-flop (saying McCain only buys American cars when that is not true) - as opposed to the fact that he happens to own some foreign cars, like the rest of us do.

Maybe it will play well in Michigan.

Elsewhere, I agree with the other posters that it seems petty given the pressing issues of the day.

This whole car discussion is obviously a symbolic thing. There's nothing inherently patriotic about owning a particular model. I've owned a Ford, Honda, Toyota and Mercury Sable – depending on my needs. No big deal.

McCain does seem out of touch with ordinary Americans. Being the son and grandson of navy admirals, marrying a super-rich heiress, serving 26 years in the Congress, never having to worry about mortgage payments or student loans – does that to you!.

I'll pick the candidate with one car, one house, one spouse, two fine children; and intellectual acumen and deep understanding of our nation's economy, constitution, health care, Iraq mistake and world affairs – over the other guy who will continue Bush/Cheney policies!

Remember, Cindy actually did some work on her cars when she was younger. You should be ashamed CNN and so should the Obama campaign. Very bad.

Rudy NYC   September 23rd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Chrissy, Texas., did you vote in 2004?

You should hear what so many of my Hispanic friends are saying in the NYC area. Most voted for Bush in 2004, many were not here in 2000. They feel betrayed. All the broken promises. So many policies and decisions that went against what was in their best interests. They no longer trust the GOP.

The GOP has lost its way. Today's Republican Party is no longer the party of Lincoln, not even Reagan. They have sold themselves out to imperialistic capitalist policies. They no longer follow the doctrines laid out by Reagan, but rather follow policies guided by greed under the disguise of "American Values". They have become the wolf in sheep's clothing.

They have been hijacked by extreme elements on the far right. They are so far gone that it make even Reagan say, "My party has deserted me."

Fred Flintstone   September 23rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Okay, so you are busy electing the "leader of the free world".... and it comes down to THIS?? CARS???
Look, you've already thrust "W" on the world for EIGHT YEARS!! It's time America got serious about this race! And for god's sake, give us someone with a resume that doesn't disappear when you look at it from the side!!

Jerry Ohio   September 23rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Could I have one of those cars I dont have one,,,,McCain what you going to do with 13 cars....Could you sell your cars and help Hurricane Ike victims with the money

Tainopower   September 23rd, 2008 3:54 pm ET

little secret obama. I am not voting for McCain because he has 7,8,or 12 houses or he has lot of cars. He is a rich man just like you . And I am voting for mcCain because he has the experience and judgment to lead.

Obama is REAL Change   September 23rd, 2008 3:54 pm ET

McCain also told the New York Times last year that he bought his daughter, Meghan, a Toyota Prius. He later denied the purchase and said Meghan bought the car herself. Meghan bought the car herself .................

and her $700,000 town House (PAID in CASH)..............LIES..LIES...LIES...LIES....LIES

Virginia from Virginia   September 23rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Big Whoop!! I drive a Mercedes SUV and am an American through and through. So what if the McCains have some foreign made vehicles? What difference does that make? Is it going to make him unfit for the presidency? Give me a break; all you desperate Obama-ites need to find an issue that has some meat to it and that would matter.

Chris, Denver CO   September 23rd, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Oh, brother. This is a terrible ad. And I say that as a huge Obama supporter, but I own 2 foreign cars, and if that is supposed to mean I don't love my country then I think this ad will alienate a lot of people. If American cars didn't fall apart after 40,000 miles, I might consider one. Maybe Obama should just go back to taking the high road. With all the soft targets to hit McCain on, this is what they come up with?

California Voter   September 23rd, 2008 3:50 pm ET

I'd like to hear some more discussion about the economy, not about how many cars either candidate owns, leases, rents or whatever. With the millions of money being spent by the campaigns the issue about cars is a non-issue.

Jack   September 23rd, 2008 3:50 pm ET

But he has 10 American made cars, while Obama only has one. That looks like 10 times more support for US-made cars than Obama.

Brandon In NC   September 23rd, 2008 3:50 pm ET

This means a lot to our auto workers from Ford & GM. McCain does not have the American people at heart

Sian   September 23rd, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Seriously now, there are many Americans that drive foreign cars and they are equally responsible for the downfall of the automobile industry. What is more important is that Wasila refused to pick up the tab for rape exam kits under "Mayor Palin"

tomstock   September 23rd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

The Obama News Network is in hyperdrive again – attacking McCain at every chance they can. Fail.

rm   September 23rd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

This article is very relevant to American auto workers who are out of work. Just because it doesn't apply to you does not mean it is not important. I remember when the McCain campaign criticized Joe Biden when he said that people want to be able to buy toaster. He was talking to many Americans who have to decide if they are going to pay the light bill of buy gas for work next week. Some people are so insensitive. McCain and his rich friends that get the tax breaks would know nothing about this struggle. And if are a victim of this struggle and plan to vote for Palin/McCain, you are asking for it to continue.

indi   September 23rd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

What's next? Eat foreign food, wear foreign made cloth and shoes, watch foreign movies? It is pretty stupid for Obama camp to bring this kind of things up. It is petty and counter productive.

proud army and navy mom   September 23rd, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Imagine if Sen Obama owned 13 cars. you could almost hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth coming from the repugs' camp.

They would be totally convinced he was up to nefarious acts but because it's mcliar, it's ok.

Think people of the double standard.

Really...   September 23rd, 2008 3:47 pm ET

No politician is honest – it's part of the game. Obama is not above that:

Obama said in SF recently that he wanted to repeal the defense against marriage act to allow gay couples to marry. In the very first debate he was part of, he said no to that notion due to his religious beliefs but would support civil unions...which is it Barry?

NAFTA or no NAFTA? No secret trips to Canada now..

Do you REALLY support off-shore drilling?? You've said 2 different things...

Hillary voting for the Iraq war was very wrong and you were right. Blame Hillary for the war. Wait, Joe Biden also voted for the war, right? What's changed on your staunch position and finger pointing? The polls say enconomy matters now.. so I guess we can let that slide.

A man that can throw his own self-proclaimed uncle under the bus for his political gain is supposed to represent us, the people? Sorry – if you don't support your own family how could I trust you with mine?

The View from here   September 23rd, 2008 3:47 pm ET

I'm sure this is no more then one would expect from John McCain. Why would he want to live like a real patriotic member of the United States Senate and drive an American made car? No real prestiege there. What would his money bag friends think of him ?

Steve - Minneapolis   September 23rd, 2008 3:47 pm ET

I'm a strong supporter of the Obama/Biden campaign but I don't like these kinds of ads either. We all drive foreign cars (maybe not as many as McCain) and we don't think anything of it.

There are so many other reasons why we should elect Barack. I would rather listen to him speak intelligently on the issues. Something that McCain and certainly Palin can't do. The choice becomes obvious.

Well so far I know about all the houses, cars, wives and who works for each candidate's campaign. Now when is either candidate going to stop with the BS ad's and actually discuss issues and give straight answers to what there going to do to that will actually help the average American. It's not the Dem's or Rep's fault alone were in the mess,it's both of them. Divided we stand united we fall.

McCain is a very dangerous old man for this economy. You're picking up the tab for Silver Bank where his son was CEO and it went belly up. DO YOUR OWN INVESTIGATING OF MCCAIN AND HIS FAMILY AND STOP DEPENDING ON THE MEDIA.

Brilliant .... Priceless   September 23rd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

This is a perfect Ad.

Like many other supporters, I want Barack Obama to use his superior intellect and positions on the issues to finish McCain off ... but ...

this ad reveals McCain to be a LIAR to a key constiuency for the Democrats and it does it without NUANCE.

It's a shot right between the EYES and sometimes that's necessary in politics.

Republicans will no longer think that Democrats are wussy punks to be painted as SOFT. They started this crap and we will FINISH it.

miami hurricane   September 23rd, 2008 3:43 pm ET

Before you Obama supporters get your panties all wadded up; you might want to know that Mercedes, Toyota, and Honda all have auto plants in the south. And this is still America and America is a capitalist country always has and always will, you can buy what you can afford. Over half of Obama's staff drive foreign cars, if you don't believe it check the parking lot photo on youtube . If you go to the local Obama campaign Headquarters you'ld be hard press to find a Chevy, Ford or Chrysler. And don't forget Nafta was approved during the Clinton Administration. Last thing most of us are sitting in front of foreign made computers, cell phones, and probably drive foreign cars ourselves. So what's worst McCain owning 12 foreign or Obama's staff owning 50 – 60. Believe me Barbara Streisand and the Hollywood crowd own more than that.

Justin   September 23rd, 2008 3:42 pm ET

Wow – and I suppose the rest of Americans like myself who own foreign cars because of their lower cost and superior reliability, fuel efficiency, and style are somehow not a part of the proposed "hope" Obama has for the country?

Oh well, at least my tires are properly inflated . . .

Brian, NJ   September 23rd, 2008 3:42 pm ET

Not only is this such a waste of millions of dollars it's a complete lie that McCain owns the three foreign cars.

The cars in questions are work cars owned by his adult daughter and his wife the CEO of Budweiser.

What does that have to do with the vehicles that John McCain himself purchased?

My work car is a BMW. oOOoooohhhhh but my two vehicles I paid for myself our Fords. Guess I'm not buying American now?

Stupid is as Stupid does. Should be Obamas Campaign slogan.

So, keep drinking Budweiser you idiots, so McCain and I can buy another American made car.

Ben - Portland, Or   September 23rd, 2008 3:38 pm ET

McCain owns many cars... big whoop. He owns a lot of houses... we'll I'll be..... He's rich! If I was worth as much as he and his wife, I'd probably have a few houses and cars, too.

What I wouldn't do it call for de-regulation. I wouldn't suggest we allow private companies to run our school systems. I wouldn't suggest we "let the market" set the price for health care costs. I wouldn't pick a candidate insulting to women as my running mate. I wouldn't sell my soul to win the white house.

He's filled his staff with evil lobbiest. He's taking advice from the same people who advised Bush. They're already using the secretive methods of the other Republican administrations, which have been abused by Bush to the point of outrage. Here's a clue, take from another ticker spot regarding Palin's meeting at the UN: "Seated slightly behind Palin were campaign foreign policy advisers Steve Biegun and Randy Scheunemann..." Seated behind – the whole administration will govern from behind the scenes. A vote for McCain/Palin is a vote for a shadow.

Don't get distracted by cars and houses. He's got plenty of other legit issues to take on.

Ashamed to have McCain as President of our Country? You stupid person, McCain helped to give you your freedom just so you could say something as ignorant as that.

The biggest shock to all you Obama supporters is if Obama wins he will be a total let down to all of you. You do not want to see him as he really is because you "want him to be the frist African American President" and it does not matter to you that he is not experienced and that he will fail in protecting all of us. You might not like McCain, but he is brave and will do all in his power to keep us safe. He will cross over to the other side in the economic matters facing us today. He will lead – he knows how to lead.

the reports say obama owns only one vehicle, a ford escape hybrid. how does his wife get around? did he bless a magic carpet to fly her around?
this entire arguement is ridiculous. does using a pen made in china make me less american? unions are unamerican anyway. nobody should support them.

It seems like some of the people thinks we should not be talking about Mccains cars. The reason we are talking about cars because he brags about buying American cars olny where in reality he owns three foreign cars.

It just shows what a terrible liar he is, he will tell anything just to get vote. As we see he wants to become a regulator after being de-regulator his whole senate life.

Deceiving is the only thing he knows. That is the only thing Republican party has to offer and yet we fall for that each time.

Peter (CA)   September 23rd, 2008 3:31 pm ET

It's a shame that it takes this kind of an ad to make an impact but it seems to. Obama hits McCain on big issues and the polls stay close. They go on this stuff and there seems to be a reaction just like there is when McCain puts out his ads.

But, it does speak to McCain's inability to tell the truth and his campaign saying that winning is all that matters. So, it looks like they want a street fight.

fella from Chicago...I have read your posts regularly and now I see your logic, but it is all wrong. The Republicans and McCain will not contribute to your American dream unless you are lucky enough to come up with some new invention that no one can live without. For most people, the American dream is being able to own your house, your car, and be out of debt. The policies of the Republicans (and especially this Administration) make that more and more difficult.

Greg Pottstown, Pa.   September 23rd, 2008 3:30 pm ET

I am posting this hear because CNN will not allow comment under the fact check article.

To support its claims, the NRA ad prints three references at the bottom of the screen — a 2005 Senate vote, a 2004 Senate debate with Republican opponent Alan Keyes and a 1999 article in the Chicago Defender. The vote, which the ad calls an effort "to ban virtually all deer-hunting ammunition," was an unsuccessful effort to expand the legal definition of ammunition to include pistol and rifle ammunition that the U.S. attorney general deems more likely to penetrate body armor than a normal round.

The Chicago Defender is correct any deer rifle will penetrate a vest with plenty of kinetic energy to go through two- three more vests. Fact check is wrong. Actually most ammo referred to as armor-piercing is just a FMJ commonly used for target practice, not the tungsten core bullet used by the military or police swat units.

Chitown Jason   September 23rd, 2008 3:28 pm ET

The reason this is a big deal is because McCain told Detroit that he only bought American cars. Had he not made this statement, it wouldn't matter what kind of cars he buys.

He lied to pander to his audience. He represented himself as something he is not.

Obviously that's politics as usual, but it does bear pointing out to the public that it happened.

PSK   September 23rd, 2008 3:28 pm ET

this is straight-out pandering to the unions.

I was born in Detroit, the daughter of a union member, and haven't owned a U.S.-made car since I left in 1963. for good reason. I wanted smaller, more manageable cars with fuel efficiency.

the issue isn't that McCain has three foreign-made cars: it's that his family has 11...as well as 7 or 8 houses...and a multi-millionaire wife who doesn't have to disclose her financial dealings.

Dan in FL   September 23rd, 2008 3:27 pm ET

I seem to remember in 2004 the republicans making a big deal about John Kerry saying he didn't own an SUV, but later saying in fact the "family" owned an SUV. This is basically the same thing. McCain was pandering to his audience, all politicians are guilty of it. Lets get back to the issues that matter!

Women in Penn 4 Obama   September 23rd, 2008 3:26 pm ET

John 'Liar' McCain and Sarah 'pitbull' Palin should be exposed of their lies. The media is not doing their jobs so we have to do it online. I agree that these people does not understand what ordinary people are going through. 7 houses, 13 cars 3 of which are foreign owned.

You lied to the Autoworkers, I hope Michigan stays blue...

Obama drives a low rider Chevy with chain steering wheel, spinning hub caps and hi-fi speaker in the back playing rap music.

mike   September 23rd, 2008 3:26 pm ET

If he lies this compulsively about the little things, what about the big issues?

Don   September 23rd, 2008 3:25 pm ET

If this is the new politics then this is one democrat who will sit this one out

north of 49   September 23rd, 2008 3:24 pm ET

I agree with a.... it does seem petty to pick on Mccain for the number of cars he has, or what make they are. It's the LIES that upset me. To look the auto workers in the eye and say "I only buy American" cars.......
That's the crime!!!

Mike   September 23rd, 2008 3:23 pm ET

See latest Joe Biden....

"We do not support coal energy...no coal plants in America...build the in China"

Funny...I thought Obama WAS in favor of coal technology...that is what he tells everyone in PA and WV and Ohio....

LIERS!!!!!!!

Finished 894 of 899 in naval academy.

Has no idea what's going on. To hell with what McCain wants.

It's about what WE want. It's our money.

just me   September 23rd, 2008 3:21 pm ET

this ad is necessary to point out to the "ordinary" voters of America that McCain would rather lose America's prosperity and standing in the world by lying and pandering than lose an election. sound familiar?

Diana   September 23rd, 2008 3:21 pm ET

It's not about the cars, houses or whatever else. It's that JOHN MCCAIN IS A LIAR & CONSTANTLY SWITCHES HIS STORIES.
OBAMA-BIDEN 08

Tony   September 23rd, 2008 3:20 pm ET

For all of the ignorant, apathetic women across the country, especially white women, who are voting for McCain and Palin, DO NOT WHINE and COMPLAIN when they lose and women have taken a huge leap BACKWARD!

The vast majority of white women who vote republican are one of three things or all three:

Racist
Ignorant and apathetic
Rich

DO NOT say that you put your families, your children, and their futures first. B.S.!!!

Issues First   September 23rd, 2008 3:20 pm ET

Can we please get back to the issues our country is facing? Giving this much attention to topics like cars only fuels the fire-
I'm no fan of McCain but I am a concerned American that wants to know about the issues!

Obama/Biden '08

Chrissy, Texas   September 23rd, 2008 3:20 pm ET

I guess sitting in church for 20yrs listening to his racist pastor and all his radical, crooked friends is nothing huh? It's called "character and judgement" of a person. Obama is nothing but a liar, hypocrite and cheat! And all this stuff about if he loses the election because of racism is a bunch of crap! This song has rung its course, I'm Mexican American does it makes me a racist because I'm voting for McCain? Obama lacks character, judgement and experience period. So all you Obama supporters get over the "race" factor and come back to reality!

Blue Collar Workers for Obama   September 23rd, 2008 3:20 pm ET

I love it. John McCain lies must be exposed. He will say anything to win an election. I used to respect John but not anymore. Joe Biden is more typical of blue collar workers.

We are voting for the Obama / Biden ticket....

JayInNewHampshire   September 23rd, 2008 3:20 pm ET

I am a Obama supporter however this ad is ridiculous. who cares how many cars he has. All that was needed was to pint out that McCain lied yet again. Do it in your stump speech and don't breath any life into those redumblicans!

georgia independent   September 23rd, 2008 3:20 pm ET

I want to know how those cars are housed – bet the garages are nicer than many people's homes.

Check out HuffingtonPost – CNN is being amazingly civil about the Senator...

Chuck   September 23rd, 2008 3:20 pm ET

The American Dream doesn't say "hold out your hand and someone will give you what you want," it goes something like this; "Work hard and you will earn what you want."

Cindy McCain's father earned what the McCains have. All this "7 houses and 13 cars" baloney is just sour grapes.

I bet McCain didn't crawl into bed with a incarcerated felon to buy any of his houses like someone we know.......

Amy, NY   September 23rd, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Even 50 cents doesn't have 13 cars!
Or does he?
Well...he is not a candidate running for office in a country so devastated by its economy that over 600,000 people have lost their jobs! Of course Mccain doesn't know what's going on in the lives of folks who live this, he is so out of touch !

DJ Los Angeles   September 23rd, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Ha ha ha! Great ad. Not so concerned about the imported cars as I am about how elitist with 13 CARS to go along with 7 HOUSES.

Vic   September 23rd, 2008 3:19 pm ET

McCain and his wife have not always been wealthy. And for God's sake, this family has 8 kids (all American made, thank you) and all old enough to drive. What this really represents is sleazy digs. Just look out Obama and Joe–how many are those Michigan people have been privileged to graduate from Ivy League colleges, with two professional degrees to their credit like you two? During the primaries, John McCain told the Michigan voters their job prospects will be different in the future, but that they could count on him to provide new training and jobs. Obama continues to lie to the good folks there, but they're smart and won't vote for him.

Proud to be American   September 23rd, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Yeah America first – get real this man is a shameful liar .... if you vote for McLiar then you (America) will get more of the same.... unfortuantely the Country will not be able to sustain the madness.... do the right thing and vote for Obama and Biden in 2008!

I AM NOT A CROOK   September 23rd, 2008 3:18 pm ET

The lying is the issue.

I'd be ashamed to have this John S. McCain as the President of my country. I mean, with Bush 43, I just thought he was stupid rather than an untrustworthy liar.

You've got to go back to Nixon to find a president that DELIBERATELY LIED this much.

Jason   September 23rd, 2008 3:18 pm ET

The prius is made in america. So is the Lexus!

Angela   September 23rd, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Obama :
1 wife
1 American car
1 House

McCain:
2nd wife
13 cars
9 houses

Note: McCain said he buys only American cars.
FactCheck: NOT TRUE!!! McCain owns 3 foreign cars

USAF Staff Sergeant   September 23rd, 2008 3:17 pm ET

What do you mean?! I own 13 cars too! I need them so I have enough for all my houses....

Oh wait.... nope my wife and I own two cars. (a Chevy and Ford)

RealityKing   September 23rd, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Of course Obama, the change agent, doesn't say that only one car is registered to John McCain — an American-made Cadillac. The other eleven are registered to Cindy McCain, a known drift-racer and car-enthusiast.

Obama the divider?

Tony   September 23rd, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Shelly!

I agree. It will be n ice to see Palin, McCain and BUSH all thrown out with the trash at one time.

I live 3 blocks from the White House and can see it from my front stoop. We have waited 8 long, horrific years for the stench in the air to clear.

ellen   September 23rd, 2008 3:16 pm ET

this is much about nothing. At the end of the day, who cares who owns what or where they got it. this country has real problems and these personal attacks about cars are just worthless

Dave in Illinois   September 23rd, 2008 3:15 pm ET

What BS!!!!! We could look into Obama's house and find how many items he owns that are made outside the US but what's the point. We all own foreign made goods because they're less expense or better made than US goods.

Bulldog   September 23rd, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Welcome to the Tucker Bounds puppet show. Today he will be featuring his infamous puppets John McCain and Sarah Palin in the fictional story "We Are Not Liars".

Ben in Atlanta, GA   September 23rd, 2008 3:15 pm ET

I am an Obama supporter, but this like the computer ad is stupid and irrelevant! This is the best that you can do in times like these? Give me a freakin break!

Obama– it's time to get back on board with real issues and let McCain/Palin roll around in the gutter of sleazy politics! Whatever happened to "Change"?

Sarah.....and my last name isn't Palin!   September 23rd, 2008 3:14 pm ET

Quit lying McCain...it's pathetic.

Debby   September 23rd, 2008 3:14 pm ET

Thank you Sen. McCain for contributing to the automotive industry on buying 13 cars. Sen. Obama can't quite grasp that we can buy foreign cars here in the US which keep sales, mechanics, and dealerships open to keep these people employed. Boy what a lame ad from an empty suited campaign.

fella from Chicago   September 23rd, 2008 3:13 pm ET

People come to this country still thinking our streets are made of gold. Americans already here buy their lotto tickets religiously each week. What do they both have in common? They want to experience the American dream; they want to be rich beyond their wildness dreams.

John McCain has obtained the American dream. I want to have seven houses and thirteen cars. That's why I play the lotto. We defeated those in past wars who would limit ownership to one car and one house and destroy dreams for more.

You want Socialism and have the government dictate how many houses and cars you can have, please vote for Obama. Me..I'm voting for the American dream.

Women in PROTEST of Sarah Palin   September 23rd, 2008 3:13 pm ET

John McCain and Sarah Palin have set the progress of Women back 50 years. They both believe that all she has to do is just smile for the camera and look pretty. Don't talk. Don't talk. Don't say a word. Another point that tells me that John McCain is OUT OF TOUCH. He is stupid enough to think that women will fall for this Bull. This woman is a joke and she makes him and his campaign look foolish.
Real women of today (For example, Hillary Clinton) would not stand for this. Hillary is woman who can hold her own. She is not afraid to speak her mind. This Sarah woman is a "PUPPET" she only says what it told to her. She is MIND-LESS, WEAK, and A DISCRACE TO WOMEN OF POWER EVERYWHERE.

FL voter   September 23rd, 2008 3:13 pm ET

I'm John McCain, and I approve this lie, as well as all of my flip-flops. Age is perhaps now an issue more than ever. America, wake up.

He says he can relate to the average American...with 9 houses and 13 cars. Thats average...for a person whose wife is worth $100M.

Obama 08 – Still the SANE choice.

Tony   September 23rd, 2008 3:13 pm ET

The American people are so easily led and even more easily fooled.

Anyone who is able to think for themselves doesn't believe for one moment that McCain and his Stepford wife do not have millions in off-shore accoutnts and in banks in other countries.

Apparently a large number of people must have been very happy with the last 8 years, if not, Obama would be ahead in every poll by 20 points or more.

Wake Up America!

VIRGINIA will be blue   September 23rd, 2008 3:12 pm ET

OBAMA/BIDEN 08

Matt, MN   September 23rd, 2008 3:12 pm ET

So much for family being off limits... of the 3 cars, one is his wifes and 1 is his daughters.

What type of vechicle does Obama's wife drive? I find it quite hard to believe that the couple only has ONE vechicle (especially since the article the report of the Mccain families total, mentioned the 13 as John AND Cindy Mccains total, yet the 1 was JUST Obama's, not his wifes.

(Doubt this will make it through though, I'm not bashing mccain enough...)

Dan Democrat   September 23rd, 2008 3:12 pm ET

This is unfair!!!! Everything should be equal for everybody. We need a planned economy with a strong central government. We want our jobs guaranteed and our health care managed by the government. We want wage and price controls. We want Communism, and we want it now. Barack Obama is Hope for the future. He is the one we have been waiting for. Vote Obama !!!

Deb in Vegas   September 23rd, 2008 3:12 pm ET

I bet if anyone takes the time to check, all of these cars are made at US plants in the US by US workers.

Take a look at where your Ford, Chevy, Dodge, etc was made......

By the way, have any of you Hollywood huggers checked to see how many cars THEY have? How many limos? How many vacation homes? Or is that okay because they happen to support the same candidate you do.

Ed from Dallas   September 23rd, 2008 3:12 pm ET

The issue here people is not about cars.
Its about Johnah McPalin saying one thing and doing another.
Its about him pandering to us. Obama is just trying to put this out there for all to see.
He is NO 'Straight Talk'. Just a 'Straight Liar'.

Sandra   September 23rd, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Once again McPain gets caught in a lie... Boo Hoo

Obama/Biden 08

VA Mike   September 23rd, 2008 3:10 pm ET

The reason McCain thinks he can get away with lies is because he's doesn't understand cyberspace. His lies echo a million times on the internet, blogs, and by email.

WOW   September 23rd, 2008 3:10 pm ET

I'm sorry but I can't relate to McCain I owned one car, having 13 cars is showing too much greed!!!

Latina for Obama (nj)   September 23rd, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Exactly!!! is not the amount of cars he owns that's an issue...the issue is that HE IS A LIAR!!! AND SO IS THE PITT BULL!!!

YES WE CAN!!

Shelly   September 23rd, 2008 3:10 pm ET

I am so sick of McCain and Palin it's not even funny.

I can't wait till November when Obama gets elected to be our President.

Then McCain and Palin will be just a bad nightmare.

White Couple for Obama!!   September 23rd, 2008 3:08 pm ET

LOL I still love it. Shows McCains LIES!!

Cody   September 23rd, 2008 3:08 pm ET

I'm an Obama supporter, but this is stupid. Get back to hammering McCain on economic policy.
Yes, McCain is rich and out of touch. However, that he is rich is NOT the issue. That he is out of touch IS the issue.

independent   September 23rd, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Let me get this straight....mocking McCain for not using a computer is 'terrible', but it's perfectly acceptable to talk about how many cars he owns? What a joke. We should be talking about Iraq and the economy, not this partisan crap. Way to be different, Obama.

Maureen, Newman California   September 23rd, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Tucker Bounds is fundamentally gutter slime.

Susan   September 23rd, 2008 3:07 pm ET

I am for the Democrats..........but we feel 'it is a little tacky' of the democrats to even mention McCains cars.

Let's get to the issues instead. PLease

SPQR753   September 23rd, 2008 3:07 pm ET

Come on guys!! The entire Nation is in dire straits and here we are talking about trash???

Ryan   September 23rd, 2008 3:07 pm ET

So the other 10 would be American made cars? That seems like a pretty good chunk of money for Detroit. Why are Americans so focused on cars when it comes to where things were built? Before you start casting stones look at everything you purchase...do you really make sure that it's built/made in America?

We Demand Our Country Back!   September 23rd, 2008 3:07 pm ET

I get what they’re trying to say with this ad, but it’s a ridiculous one. Come on, guys, stay on topic! Highlight your differences on the issues and tell us why you can do it better…that’s what we really need right now.
JoBama ‘08

Darla (Edmonton, Canada)   September 23rd, 2008 3:06 pm ET

I know that there are those who see this ad (re McCain's auto ownership) as all part of the "silly season" of this election. But it really is so much more ... anyone who makes sweeping claims ("I've bought American all my life") and continuous false statements, deserves the scrutiny and the satrical send-ups of SNL!

Black Truth AZ   September 23rd, 2008 3:06 pm ET

OBAMA/BIDEN 08/12

WOW, I see why he chose Palin, she lie just like he does. Birds of a feather. 13 cars, 7 homes, huh? Must be nice! OUT OF TOUCH IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT!

END THE DRAMA, VOTE OBAMA!

Filthy Rich   September 23rd, 2008 3:06 pm ET

WOW, 13 cars??????? This man is filthy rich. It's the filthy we should be concerned about.

GINA, OHIO   September 23rd, 2008 3:05 pm ET

13 cars!!!! 8 houses!!! are you kidding me! really mmcain?? how can he possibly relate to the avergae american! he's the elitest! and his wife in her $100,000 dollar jewlery and clothes. you might want to look a little poorer there cindy!!

CoffeeTime   September 23rd, 2008 3:05 pm ET

So, if one were to poll all of Obama's supporters and Democrats, they would ALL own one or two American-made cars? Didn't think so. This is a non-issue in such an important election, and it doesn't help Obama in taking the high road.

Screaming of the Lambs   September 23rd, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Three of the best auto makers in the industry. Sounds like McCain knows how to pick winners. CNN failed to metion each of these auto makers manufacture many of their cars in the United States. Because something is foreign owned doesn't mean it is foreign made, nor un-American. Ford and GM need to get their act together. That's not McCain's fault.

Michael   September 23rd, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Now we know who comes up with the canned Republican responses Tucker. Considering that's the exact same response as being reported over on the "Biden hits McCain on overseas tax loopholes" ticket item.

Virginia Voter   September 23rd, 2008 3:04 pm ET

OBAMA/BIDEN 08

the number of cars he owns isn't a issue. Its the LIES. I only buy American cars, oops guess not. I bought my daughter a pirus, uhh actually she bought it herself. Its not the number of cars or the type of cars, its just how easy it is for him to look into the camera and tell a obvious lie to the american public that is frightening.

Crush Rush   September 23rd, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Hes a coward and a traitor.

Hillary in 12 or 16   September 23rd, 2008 3:03 pm ET

McCain is such a shameless liar.

Barack Obama may have a foreign sounding name, but at least he doesn't buy foreign cars at the expense of our hard-working American auto workers.

Tim   September 23rd, 2008 3:03 pm ET

More discussion of the real issues I see. Politicians are predictable on both sides. What is funny to me are the Libs posting on this site with their anger and biased spew. Can you really say Obama and McCain are acting any different. Wake Up!

disappointed one   September 23rd, 2008 3:02 pm ET

to make a fun from older, vulnerable, from disability is outrageous. And to make a fun from others is degrading them. It depends of the kind of making fun: if it hurts, if it is to hurt, to degrade the person, it is wrong then.
If it is just a joking around with family or friends, the innocent fun, then it is OK.
To point the differences is different, it should never never include physical disability.

Jim   September 23rd, 2008 3:02 pm ET

CNN I think you're missing the bigger picture, not just to portray that he's out of touch and wealthy, but he's a LIAR!

Rudy NYC   September 23rd, 2008 3:02 pm ET

So, he lied to the autoworkers at the plant in Michigan. No wonder that another group of autoworkers waited for him to come on stage to start chanting, "Obama! Obama! Obama!"

if this is the best obama can come up with on mccain, looks like president mccain will be sworn in. why isn't cnn reporting on the wsj article that shows the long partnership on the annenberg project that obama had with unrepentant terrorist bill ayers. they tried to inject their radical views of the govt. into the education system in chicago. thankfully the project was a miserable failure.

I wonder what other cars do the McCain's have that fall into this catagory ... leased by a family controlled corporation?

Ready for Change   September 23rd, 2008 2:58 pm ET

I imagine McCain paid for his cars, I don't imagine he needs the taxpayers to help him pay them off, so really it's none of our freaking business how many cars he has, let's move on to something worth talking about, like the robbing and raping one more time of taxpayers by our elected officials, both republican and democratic.
