(CNN) - McCain senior advisor Mark Salter told reporters Wednesday that the Arizona senator’s decision followed two days of discussions with colleagues on Capitol Hill, who told him that the bailout plan from Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson faced an uphill fight.
He also said that McCain called President Bush today and told him of the plan, but would not characterize the president’s reaction to the proposal.
The McCain campaign will suspend airing all ads and all campaign events pending an agreement with Obama, as well as planned fundraising activities.
He added that McCain would take part in the debate as scheduled if Congress reached agreement on the measure by Friday morning.
(Updated to reflect McCain campaign announcement fundraising activities will be suspended)
Of course McCain wants to postpone or cancel all of the debates, he is not up to the challenge! What as loser he is!
We all know the financial crisis is just that – a crisis – and it needs to be dealt with in a methodic and thought filled manner. This is not something that can or should be "handled" this week.
On that note – we all have multiple responsibilities that we must attend to every day. John McCain is not going to be the savior of our economy over the next several days – neither is Barack Obama.
If John McCain (or Barack Obama) cannot handle negotiating the financial bailout AND preparing for the debate on Friday they will NEVER be able to handle the multiple issues that need to be dealt with by the President EVERY DAY.
You can't decide to stop fighting terrorism because a hurricane has developed in the gulf.
The SECOND most important issue that the US is dealing with is electing the next President. The economy will correct itself and quite honestly I will not have a whole lot to do with it (whether it is a bailout or left to its fix itself). I WILL have my say in the election. I want to hear what the candidates have to say.
If you are going to change anything...have the debate topics focus solely on the economy and save foreign policy for the next debate (or have the VP debate take care of the foreign policy issues).
Time to multi-task guys – we all have to do it!
Send Palin to the debate, to cover for McCain just like she'll have to do as VP! She's Ready!
I think it is more important now than ever, to have the debate. We need to know what both camps suggest for an immediate action plan and a long range plan. I think we need both.
Also, why aren't we proposing to have banks rewrite these mortgages? Why can't that be part of the bailout plan? Why not offer people an affordable rate and even extend terms to 40 years? This could be a win win solution. People keep their homes and the banks can get their notes met. This way the 700 billion bailout plan can be considerably reduced if necessary at all.
If McCain desides to bail on the people after making a comitment he does have a back up. I think it would be a good time for McCain's choice as second in command to start pulling her weight as a cadidate. Nothing would prove the power of a republician ticket more than allowing a would be candidate to allow his second to fill in for him when he is unable to meet his obligations. Now is a perfect opertuity for Gov. Sarha Palin to strut her stuff. Let the debates go on. Obama Vs. the avalible republican cadiate, McCain's second in command Gov. Sarha Palin.
You can bring Palin with you McSame You CHICKEN. Obama will take it to you like an old time country dad given a good one to his son in the wood shack. No, they will not be talking SURGE so McSame wants to hide. I saw him on Huffingtonpost.com and he looked really BAD. The man is yellow. Too old. Time is creeping up and he is losing the fire for this fight I think. The old DOG is gone. No wind in the sail.
I don't buy for a moment that McCain is so concerned about the economy that he needs to take a break from the campaign to chip in on the bailout plan. If he were ahead in the polls, this wouldn't have come up. He's suspending his campaign to regroup, because his poll numbers are sliding.
Why do Republicans insist on lying at every opportunity? Could it be because lying has been so effective in the past? Don't fall for it.
I AM NOW CASTING MY VOTES FOR MCCAIN. I AM GOING TO IGNORE THE FACT THAT THE REPUGS CREATED THIS MESS; THAT HIS CAMPAIGN IS FILLED WITH LOBBYIST; THAT HIS CAMPAIGN IS MAKING A MOCKERY OF THE ELECTION; THAT THE VP HE PICKED REFUSES TO TALK TO THE PRESS; THAT PALIN IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.
WHAT FOOLS DOES MCCAIN TAKE US FOR.
mccain suddenly now acknowleges issies about the economy becauseamericans arent as simpleminded but where are these empty words and action of care 8months ago-there is nothing wrong in using change to promote your career if you have evidence of change in your career there is something wrong in using your military record as a shield from deserved scrutiny
Here's the plan: postpone the 1st debate, then make sure the VP debate gets cancelled. Make sure Sarah doesn't answer any questions. The Repubs are holding this country hostage over this.
Obama should decline to accept McCain's "invitation" to suspend his campaign or the debate saying something like "We cannot let this crisis keep America from continuing its day-to-day life. This financial crisis shows just how important the election is. I can fulfill my duties in the Senate while still campaigning" Etc. If McCain pulls anything like saying Obama isn't putting the "country first," then Obama can yell "A HA! Your 'proposal' was just a political stunt" (Just like we all know it is)
After 26 years McCain decide today to fix our economic problems.
McCain may need 6 days and an additional one for rest.
McCain where is your honor? You did not mention that Obama call you first at 6:30AM about working together. You went on TV to score political points while telling us that you have put politics aside. McLiar!
Good for McCain if they can resolve this and if they can't I don't want to watch a debate with McCain and Obama going at it back and forth with no solution. CNN why did you only let pro-Obama comments below. Aren't you the No Bias No Bull or just all BULL.
"The McCain campaign will suspend airing all ads and all campaign events pending an agreement with Obama, though Salter did not know whether John McCain will suspend fundraising activities. "
He should be able communicate with his Blackberry that he invented. This is a world of technology & there's all types of communication from the road. There's too much money in this debate already, so I can't see it getting postponed. What about CNN Express?
First they thanked the HURRICANE so that "Bush did not make it to the Convention" now they are using the meltdown John helped create.
Cool man. I am learning politics faster than a solitaire.
