McCain aide: Friday debate will take place if bailout passes

(CNN) - McCain senior advisor Mark Salter told reporters Wednesday that the Arizona senator’s decision followed two days of discussions with colleagues on Capitol Hill, who told him that the bailout plan from Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson faced an uphill fight.

He also said that McCain called President Bush today and told him of the plan, but would not characterize the president’s reaction to the proposal.

The McCain campaign will suspend airing all ads and all campaign events pending an agreement with Obama, as well as planned fundraising activities.

He added that McCain would take part in the debate as scheduled if Congress reached agreement on the measure by Friday morning.

(Updated to reflect McCain campaign announcement fundraising activities will be suspended)

This is such a joke!!! So they make it seem like he is the leader and if Obama says no...what?? He has no choice but to go along with it. It is such game playing. He will say he doesn't want to politicize the situation, but that is what he is doing!!!

This whole thing is just another stunt by McCain, just like how he wanted to deliver his convention acceptance speech from a disaster area after Gustav, but unfortunately for the McCain campaign Gustav didn't provide them any heroic stages from which he can deliver a canned speech. Hopefully this economic situation won't provide him that stage.

Don't fall for this stunt, media!

McCain is tanking in the polls and wants a distraction. He hasn't been to the Senate in 6 months and suddenly wants to do his job?

    Yeah, right.

Well, this campaign is finally over anyway. McCain should have been locked away in the attic, not nominated to stammer through meaningless rambles of ReThug nonsense at the Debate. This is elder abuse. Everybody knows Obama is the greatest speaker of our time. People won’t even know McCain is on the same stage. Obama is going to destroy that feeble old man. McCain will need paramedics to help him down off the stage.

Congress has planned all along to reach an agreement by Friday.
And let me get this straight now... it's grave enough to halt the most important presidential race in history, but it isn't important enough for McCain to stop raising money?

Talk about transparent! It was a stunt and his back peddling on the debate proves it.

More drama. Same crud, different day. Senator McCain is trying to show he feels our pain. Well, I'm not buying! A vote for McCain / Palin is like pissing the wind!

If McCain is scared, he should say he's scared. Why didn't he postpone his campaign last week when the crisis started? Sounds like someone's not prepared.

I have to applaud McCain. Obama, Biden, and McCain are all senators. This country needs its senator to be on the job. This problem is now. They, currently, have a very important job. It is time for them to step up and do the job that they were elected to do!!!

  22. McPALIN

Why did CNN not report Obama called him this morning at 8,30am to do the same, instead of trying to put McSame in the driver seat to catch up?

And I dare Obama campaign fell into the trap of suspending the debate with the momentum on their side. McWar is probably ploting a national security crisis to shift the momentum before the debate. he is trying to buy time

  23. Repub for Obama!

John, how many years did sit in Washington and did absolutely nada about this crisis?? Now you suddenly care about the situation? I smell a rat with cold feet. He doesn't like the new poll numbers and has something up his sleeve!!!!!!!!!!
