(CNN) - McCain senior advisor Mark Salter told reporters Wednesday that the Arizona senator’s decision followed two days of discussions with colleagues on Capitol Hill, who told him that the bailout plan from Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson faced an uphill fight.
He also said that McCain called President Bush today and told him of the plan, but would not characterize the president’s reaction to the proposal.
The McCain campaign will suspend airing all ads and all campaign events pending an agreement with Obama, as well as planned fundraising activities.
He added that McCain would take part in the debate as scheduled if Congress reached agreement on the measure by Friday morning.

So the McCain campaign would suspend all ads but the RNCs or the hundreds of 527s will not. I just saw an RNC ad on cable a few minutes ago. This is a last desperate act but a very desperate candidate... and those are the ones to be most afraid of.

Been wondering about this economy going into the Grand Canyon "crisis" which was completely under the radar two weeks ago. Well, this seals the deal with me. Knew there would be a crisis, but figured it would revolve around “bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran”. Don't know how much is real or manufactured but figure it will be as bad as those behind it want to make it, but this appears to have a sense of orchestration to set up a Bush 3rd term with McCain as the "decider". If "The Deregulator" McCain is elected, Wall Street will continue their toxic behavior, and America will continue down the same destructive path Bush has taken us for the last 8 years. If I remember my American history, Abraham Lincoln ran for re-election to the presidency during our Civil War. I don't believe the meltdown on Wall Street is sufficient cause to suspend the most critical national campaign in 75 years, five and ahalf weeks before election day! BRING IT ON!

We're trying to pick a president to help get us out of the mess. Delaying debates is not going to help anything right now. Joe Klein from TIME called it "Gimmicks R US". It is funny that the Obama camp reached out to McCain first to try to get a joint letter issued. McCain is running the most dishonest campaign in the history of this country. Why didn't he go back to the Hill Monday? Politico said that the only thing that's changed in the last 48 hours are the poll numbers.
