McCain aide: Friday debate will take place if bailout passes

(CNN) - McCain senior advisor Mark Salter told reporters Wednesday that the Arizona senator’s decision followed two days of discussions with colleagues on Capitol Hill, who told him that the bailout plan from Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson faced an uphill fight.

He also said that McCain called President Bush today and told him of the plan, but would not characterize the president’s reaction to the proposal.

The McCain campaign will suspend airing all ads and all campaign events pending an agreement with Obama, as well as planned fundraising activities.

He added that McCain would take part in the debate as scheduled if Congress reached agreement on the measure by Friday morning.

(Updated to reflect McCain campaign announcement fundraising activities will be suspended)

So the McCain campaign would suspend all ads but the RNCs or the hundreds of 527s will not. I just saw an RNC ad on cable a few minutes ago. This is a last desperate act but a very desperate candidate... and those are the ones to be most afraid of.

Please another Karl Rove move. It's not like he knows much about the economy anyway. Let the debate go on. McCain's campaign need to regroup, that's why they want to delay the debate. Funny how he doesn't know if he'll suspend fundraising. Whatever.

The American people should not be fooled by this stunt. Mcain has been watching his poll numbers dwindle, the pressure of perfoming well in this debate is on and he was not ready for it because he spend the whole week trying to bash Obama and now feels like he can just LIE his way out of it. Please senator Mcain stop this nonsense, first he said the fundamentals of the economy are strong, opposed the bail out of AIG tuesday before he opposed it. Mcain should own up to his and his party's failures and stop this political posturing.

  15. Obama 100%

This is nothing more than a political ploy from McCrooked. He doesn't care about the welfare of America – he's part of the reason we're in this mess today. Keating 5. His old pal Phil. McDeregulator, DROP OUT OF THIS RACE. You are playing politics at the worst possible time – when this nation is in a crisis.

If you were on the fence before, it should now be clear to you that Obama is the answer for America. Together, we will change this country.

    Obama-Biden '08!!!

What? He's using the bailout to bail out? NOW is an even more urgent time to hear what the two of them have to say on our nation's economy!

Been wondering about this economy going into the Grand Canyon "crisis" which was completely under the radar two weeks ago. Well, this seals the deal with me. Knew there would be a crisis, but figured it would revolve around “bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran”. Don't know how much is real or manufactured but figure it will be as bad as those behind it want to make it, but this appears to have a sense of orchestration to set up a Bush 3rd term with McCain as the "decider". If "The Deregulator" McCain is elected, Wall Street will continue their toxic behavior, and America will continue down the same destructive path Bush has taken us for the last 8 years. May God Bless and Help America.

If I remember my American history, Abraham Lincoln ran for re-election to the presidency during our Civil War. I don't believe the meltdown on Wall Street is sufficient cause to suspend the most critical national campaign in 75 years, five and ahalf weeks before election day! BRING IT ON!

Sarah Failin and John Mccaint should have a tag team debate with Barack Obama and Joe Biden. I think that would be a real HOOT!!!! God everytime I hear her voice ......sounds like someones slamming a bag of cats against a wall... Glad to see she is meeting all these foriegn dignitaries.... anyone of them knows more about her than the people of America...How anyone can vote for the Repugs is far beyond all logical thought

For McCain to halt everything to do with his campaign with the exceptions of attending fundraising activities is a very clear sign that his motivations are not pure!

    A diversion tactic. Look – Haley's Comet!!!!

    Wall Street:

    Jump, Baby, Jump!

Let the bads ones fail. Good banks will take thier place.

A few weeks ago the Fed allowed these firms to come to the discount window and borrow money. Why haven't they been using this… because the interest is less than 4%….and they want a free bail out?

Yet these same banks want to charge 29% to thier credit card holders!

They should all go to the top of thier skyscrapers and JUMP!.

    Jump, Baby, Jump

We're trying to pick a president to help get us out of the mess. Delaying debates is not going to help anything right now. Joe Klein from TIME called it "Gimmicks R US". It is funny that the Obama camp reached out to McCain first to try to get a joint letter issued. McCain is running the most dishonest campaign in the history of this country. Why didn't he go back to the Hill Monday? Politico said that the only thing that's changed in the last 48 hours are the poll numbers.
