(CNN) - McCain senior advisor Mark Salter told reporters Wednesday that the Arizona senator’s decision followed two days of discussions with colleagues on Capitol Hill, who told him that the bailout plan from Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson faced an uphill fight.
He also said that McCain called President Bush today and told him of the plan, but would not characterize the president’s reaction to the proposal.
The McCain campaign will suspend airing all ads and all campaign events pending an agreement with Obama, as well as planned fundraising activities.
He added that McCain would take part in the debate as scheduled if Congress reached agreement on the measure by Friday morning.
(Updated to reflect McCain campaign announcement fundraising activities will be suspended)

Than why call it off; work until its done fly to Washington Friday morning – vote and head straight to Mississippi - so what's the confusion here?
THE POLLS
I smell a rat ..he is stalling this is a political game. I do not trust McCain...can he not walk and chew gumat the same time? Americans do it every day!
WHATEVER!
REPUB'S ARE RUNNING SCARED
LET THE GAMES BEGIN
GO AHEAD AND TRY TO ADD A "LITTLE" CONCERN TO YOUR CAMPAIGN
HIS PARTY HELPED CREATE THIS MESS...NOW YOU WANT TO SHOW INTEREST IN FIXING IT.
GO TO...
What a crock! It proves that he is not a multi tasker. How can he be President and not handle multiple issues on his plate. Lets face it he does not want to debate and it is not the first time that he has missed a vote in the Senate. In this case it seems as though most Senators and Congressman, Republican/Democrat are in large agreement that the Paulson plan is dead on arrival.
McCain the undecided voters need to see you debate!
McCain aide: McCain will join Obama campaign on Friday
This guy is such a joke I mean seriously. First you were insisting that you have weekly debates or something silly now all of a sudden it comes down to crunch and you want to postpone laughable.
His senior adviser knows everything other than whether he will suspend fund raising. Read between the lines – he will still be available for fund raising commitments.
The foul stench of desperation.
If he will only suspend his campaign pending Obama's agreement, is he really putting country first. Must be getting tired of the daily pounding on economic issues. Why doesn't he send Palin to the debate in his place? She's soooooo ready to take McCain's place. If McCain can't handle multiple tasks at once, then he has no business running for president. Perhaps he's just more comfortable in Washington than dealing with the real people whose economic fortunes have been endangered by his deregulation policies.
John! If you're scared, send Sarah Palin.
She's silly and ignorant, but she's got guts. And guts is enough.
JOHN CANCEL THE ENTIRE CAMPAIGN ........
COUNTRY FIRST ....RIGHT
DO US ALL A FLAVOR.........................................
OBAMA/BIDEN O8
Funny, he's going to put his 2 cents in on something he doesn't grasp any concept of, interesting I think someone is not prepared and is going to use this as a campaign tactic. A cheap and desperate move, if the agreement is met he'll say he want to go with postponing because he was to busy in Washington, the same Washington he's been bashing, this guys as transparent as a sandwich bag.
Military Member for Obama
it will be more exciting without mccain, there, anyway.
If McCain truly feels that he should suspend his campaigning until the financial crisis is settled, he should do it whether or not Obama agrees with him.
sounds like mcsame is wimping out.
"BS", Republican's ("McCain") is simply trying to cover their tracks and any involvment with this financial scandal/crisis
I smell a rotten fish, suspend fundraising? He knows Obama is running on private donations and McCain on public funding, Obama cannot suspend those. Why do they need to pull their ads? When McCain's surrogates are running race baiting ads in key swing states? I smell a fish a rotten one. Why can't McCain and Obama just move the debate to DC? Congress doesn't meet all night long, have the debate in the evening hours.
McCrypt wants to postpone the debates, because he knows it will include some domestic economic issues, and which he is not ready to discuss! It will not be just foreign pollicy as he expected.
As has been proven many times over the past 10 days, plus McCrypt is trying to bury the NYT story about Rick Davis in the news cycle.
Another day, another cheap stunt by the McCain campaign. McCain – you proved this week you know nothing about the economy. You made spastic and wild claims that contradicted themselves day to day. I doubt congress needs your insight to get things done.
America, however, needs to compare you and Obama. Be a leader and make THAT happen.
Sen. OBAMA please stay focused, let nothing change your direction. McCain in against the ropes and he knows it. The state of Mississippi is going BLUE for YOU. We are fired up and ready to roll. Let's do this. Tell McCain that I will have a plane ready to fly him to Washington after the debate. OBAMA 08 (1SG retired) Make IT Happen!
Hasty McCain!!!
Why would he do these things before he had the full details of the situation? Talk about bad timing. This is typical of what the American people have seen during the last eight (8) years of the current Rep. Administration; i.e. Iraq and Katrina response.
This is a drastic miscalculation of the part of Mr. McCain.
This is just a bunch of dookie!!!!! John McCain makes me sick to my stomach. He will sell his mothers on soul to win this election. IT WILL NOT WORK!!!!!!.
fundraisers a go!!
Obama cannot let John MCbush take the lead on this subject.
Obama must stay on top.MCsame is running scared.
This is such an amazingly transparent stunt. John McCain does not do what is right for our country, he does what is right for his campaign.
Palin bounce is gone, poll numbers are slumping, debate looming... and he pulls this.
He doesn't even have a central role in making any decisions about the bailout. He is just another senator in the Senate. He isn't on the economic committee overseeing the bailout plans either.
STUNT. See McCain for what he really is...
