McCain aide: Friday debate will take place if bailout passes

(CNN) - McCain senior advisor Mark Salter told reporters Wednesday that the Arizona senator’s decision followed two days of discussions with colleagues on Capitol Hill, who told him that the bailout plan from Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson faced an uphill fight.

He also said that McCain called President Bush today and told him of the plan, but would not characterize the president’s reaction to the proposal.

The McCain campaign will suspend airing all ads and all campaign events pending an agreement with Obama, as well as planned fundraising activities.

He added that McCain would take part in the debate as scheduled if Congress reached agreement on the measure by Friday morning.

(Updated to reflect McCain campaign announcement fundraising activities will be suspended)

Hurricanes, economic melt down, hunting season in Alaska.

Can we just put the election on hold till May ?
Or until McCain comes out of retrograde .

We need confidence and leadership, not more of the same.

The debates should not be postponed due to this new McCain ploy!!! It is important for us to hear what the candidates have to say. We have to move forward as a country and this upcoming election is the single-most important decision that Americans can make.

If McCain cannot FOCUS on campaigning and tackling America's problems at the same time, HOW CAN BE BE PRESIDENT?

Leaders must be able to do handle multiple issues at one time. We really need a leader who is level headed in ALL circumstances, and McCain is not that at all.

Never mind suspending your campaign McCain. Put Palin on the air and let her answer some questions. Republicans are offering up a person for VP of the world's largest economy. It's about time she started answering some questions. McCain is just trying to get out of the debate and keep Palin away from the press. How ridiculous can you get? You are not needed in Washington McCain. You have a campaign to expose to the American people. Just get on with it.

How can you argue with that reasoning?

Oh, I'm sure the Obamatards will find something to snap at.

Got to give it to him, its a nice stunt to reset his campaign. I would also suspect he is not prepared for the debate. I doubt Obama or McCain can do anything but add to the problem by showing up in DC.

Just what does McCain think he's doing – holding the process hostage?? We all know why he wants to delay the debates - HE"S NOT PREPARED!

Face it, John, whether it's on Friday night or another night, your appointment with destiny will arrive. Why don't you just get it over with instead of trying to use this excuse to delay the inevitable.

Now this is a real coward and traitor!!

McCain, you don't need to be there to debate the floor. You can fly in, vote, and then leave.

This scum bag is using this event to bloster his rep. Sick, sick, sick!!!

They should not delay this debate. It will not make a different. McCain is not a leader but wants to make people think he is. McCain go to the debate. Don't let the people down.

    Dear Barack,
Suspend ads until after this weekend, nothing else. Then McCain can't play up his "Obama is selfish" ploy. Insist that the debate be on Friday. He can't not participate. McCain can't use his "Obama first, country second" line in reference to the debate: the American people need to know, in a time of great crisis, as much as possible about who's going to lead next year, and they need to know as soon as possible. Country First? Let's learn about our next president for starts.

Now McCain is a man of action while Obama is a man of inaction. I am glad that John McCain is taking this crisis seriously unlike Obamas.

Obama and Biden voted at least twice for the bridge to nowhere. i am not shocked but disappointed in their votes.

McCain will protect our country and our values. I am sure that Obama is risky and it is a roll of the dice if he will protect our values and our country.

This is so obviously a political stunt and i hope people see through it. If he wasnt running a campaign, he would probably be taking his private jet over to a tropical paradise. He doesnt care about our economy, his income is secure, i mean he could always try to decide which of his houses to sell... however many that is.

He is just delaying the debate because he knows Obama will win it if he goes at it just yet. Its been proven before, Obama trumps McCain in debates.

Lets all laugh as McCains ratings begin to drop because of this!

They should change the debate on foreign affair to economy so voters can see who know more on economy. You know they have not prepated to debate on economy so they did not have prepared answers yet!

Really hedging their bets aren't they?
    McCain's campaign sounds confused.

Nice to see Sen. Obama reaching out to McCain and showing that "Country First" actually means something and is not just a Republican ploy to avoid blame for the mess they made.

  19. McCain is Chicken to debate Obama

This is just another Republican diversion. Obviously McCain is not ready for the debate so they Republicans are using the bailout discussion as a diversion. It is just like they tried to use Hurricane Gustav to not have a real convention and mainly to keep Bush from showing up. Next they will be trying to cancel the VP debate because it is snowing in Alaska! Don't fall for it! Call out McCain for putting up false displays of concern to avoid the debate! McCain knows he is going to look like a fool in the debate so the Republicans are looking for any excuse to pull out. McCain is in no way critical to this bailout discussion. it is expected to go on all weekend. He can still debate Obama and the go to Washington to cast his vote. McCain is afraid to debate Obama. Don't let the Republicans get away with this ploy! Palin hides from the press and now McCain is hiding from the debate! Why am I not surprised? McCain and Palin are a joke!

What a shady person. Don't take the bait Obama. McCain is a scumbag trying to hide his own lack of knowledge and ability behind his patriotic "country first" nonsense.

he doesn't want to be face to face with Obama. He is already dropping in the polls and fears it will go totally in the tank with the debate. he knows his best shot is to get Obama to stop campaigning.

What better way for Sen. McCain to show that he would be the best leader in times of crisis than to debate Sen. Obama during a time of crisis?!

It's amazing what a slight change in polls will make a panicky politician do. This is the most obvious political maneuver I've ever seen.
