McCain camp to propose postponing VP debate

(CNN) - McCain supporter Sen. Lindsey Graham tells CNN the McCain campaign is proposing to the Presidential Debate Commission and the Obama camp that if there's no bailout deal by Friday, the first presidential debate should take the place of the VP debate, currently scheduled for next Thursday, October 2 in St. Louis.

In this scenario, the vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin would be rescheduled for a date yet to be determined, and take place in Oxford, Mississippi, currently slated to be the site of the first presidential faceoff this Friday.

Graham says the McCain camp is well aware of the position of the Obama campaign and the debate commission that the debate should go on as planned - but both he and another senior McCain adviser insist the Republican nominee will not go to the debate Friday if there's no deal on the bailout.

John McCain has no legislative vote on this committee to resolve the bail out. If he wants to influence the Republicans he can have a press meeting or make some phone calls. THIS IS A PURE 100% STUNT and he appears to be wacko! This is not "maverick". This anxiety ,,a kind of neurotic narcissism as he wants to be the center and have the appearance of being"in command". He is not the president. He must have one of those "small man complexes" as he seeks to puff up his importance,

I believe if McCain is so intent on canceling the debate then I believe the VP's should go on with the show – what, is McCain to worried that Palin is not ready to debate or does she need more prep time?

If McCain cannot multi-task – then how will he be an effective President. My understanding is that you should be able to deal with a crisis and still show up and deliver when it is necessary. After all he is still interviewing for a job before the American people and he needs to explain his "NEW" position on the economy – a minute ago our economy was fine according to him & now it is in crisis – he needs to explain to us – the American People his position – otherwise this will be none as his real "Bail OUT" to the American people on his positioning.

What a joke! Now they're trying to hide Palin as well. This has got to be one of the most cynical, transparent ploys in the history of presidential politics.

If we could hold a debate the day Khrushchev announced the Soviets had nuclear subs, we can hold a debate while the bailout deal is being hammered out in Congress. I'm not sure what John McCain thinks he's going to add that he couldn't have added some time during the last week, or couldn't add during the day on Friday. He has a plane. It would only take a few hours of his time to keep his obligations to the people of MS, and the people of America.

This is about Palin. She's not ready to face Biden next week. This was all a ploy to protect her. Plus McCain didn't want to face the questions about Rick Davis or his lost state of mind for the last 10 days. Laura Bush said Palin didn't have foreign policy experience. That didn't help.

I cannot believe this....what a great why of avoiding an obvious disaster. Palin / Biden = disaster.

Simply postpone the 1st pres debate and replace at the date set for the VP date.

McCain is a McClown – POW or not.

McLame is simply trying to escape a debate and arrange a photo op. Now would be a good moment to have a debate on economy between the candidates – if they "get to work", they'll only distract everybody from doing their work.

Man... McCain camp is bugging out. I mean are you seriously talking about postponing the debate regardless if the Obama camp wants to continue?

Let's not worry about getting someone into position in 40 days. Let's worry about NOW.

Another McCain stunt. While I'm glad he's finally acknowledging the economy is in trouble, no one is so stupid to fall for this stunt. He was meeting with Lady Rothchild today – when exactly did he decide things were desperate?

First the Fat Boys break up and now this?!!!

Let's get serious...McCain is unprepared and the world knows Palin is unprepared. But, you cannot just call a timeout and change the rules in the middle of the game. If McCain cannot handle a debate during this critical time, how is he going to effectively lead our country. This is yet another political stunt from his campaign and we are all getting sick of this nonsense. VERY UN-PRESIDENTIAL!

I guess Palin should've been studying up for her debate instead of having playdates with world leaderrs to fake the appearance of foreign policy credentials.

OMG, how utterly desperate! I knew McPOW was up to something. It isn't really like we don't all know the Barbie-bot isn't ready for any kind of debate. She will be absolutely destroyed by Biden. What a complete JOKE Sarah Failin has turned out to be.

This is nonsense. McCain has no right to dictate the terms of the Presidential selection process. If he wants to push through a bailout that he caused, he can at least do the debate.
