McCain camp to propose postponing VP debate

(CNN) - McCain supporter Sen. Lindsey Graham tells CNN the McCain campaign is proposing to the Presidential Debate Commission and the Obama camp that if there's no bailout deal by Friday, the first presidential debate should take the place of the VP debate, currently scheduled for next Thursday, October 2 in St. Louis.

In this scenario, the vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin would be rescheduled for a date yet to be determined, and take place in Oxford, Mississippi, currently slated to be the site of the first presidential faceoff this Friday.

Graham says the McCain camp is well aware of the position of the Obama campaign and the debate commission that the debate should go on as planned - but both he and another senior McCain adviser insist the Republican nominee will not go to the debate Friday if there's no deal on the bailout.

CNN- I am tired of responding, leaving comments and then never getting posted. COME ON
THIS JUST ANOTHER PLOY BY THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN TO POSPONE THE 1ST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE AND THEN POSPONE THE VP DEBATE TO A UNDETERMINED DATE. WHAT A BUNCH OF BS. THIS JUST PROVES THAT MCCAIN IS NOT PREPARED AND IS RUNNING SCARED AND JUST ANOTHER DELAY TO HAVE PALIN FACE THE MUSIC. ISN'T ENOU GH, ENOUGH? THEY CONTINUE TO THINK THAT THE GOOD PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY ARE JUST PLAIN STUOID. WHAT A DISGRACE TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC.

OMFG. Seriously. This is getting ridiculous, and it's now becoming ridiculously obvious that McCain's trying to shield Palin and himself from public scrutiny. Don't fall for it, PDC. Let the debates go on as planned. And if the GOPs don't show up, who the hell cares, they're only in it for the picture ops anyway.

I am not impressed by the suggestion, but can you blame McCain? If he replaces the VP debate with the first Presidential debate, it will buy Sarah Palin some time to learn the basics of what a president actually does, besides the moose-hunting and flirting with Pakistan's corrupt President.

This is all a stunt, a COMPLETE AND UTTER STUNT. Anyone dumb enough to fall for any of this political hogwash McCain is pulling doesn't deserve to vote in this great nation.

  6. McCain/Palin go home

Please tell us this is a joke. The GOP is so afraid of letting Palin speak unscripted they will think of ANY excuse. It's pathetic.

If this is any indication of how they would run the country, God help us all.

Now we see the real reason behind your bone-head decision to suspend your campaign. Palin isn't ready. So you want to buy her some more time. PATHETIC!!!

Has the McCain camp lost their minds!!!!

McCain = Credibilty out the window! Lets use this horrible event to shadow our unpreparedness, our lack of confidence in our VP pick – whom we won't even allow the press to speak to, our utter inability to lead this nation in the face of one of its darkest hours. I used to respect you Senato McCain, NO MORE.

We know the republicans and McCain were going to get a bashing over the present state of the economy. So he stages a political stunt to postpone it, and will hopefully escape scot-free. Shame on you McCain.

We need political leaders with good judgement that can think on their feet. The tactics by the McCain camp are to minimize their accessibility to the American people and lead by reaction.

My vote, which once belonged to McCain is now going to Obama. I've had enough of these shenanigans!

Ah, the smoke clears and the truth is revealed. Palin is completely unprepared (unqualified, actually ) to debate Joe Biden.
This whole thing is a ploy to push the VP debate back. Can this charade please end? Either drop Palin from the ticket or let her reveal herself for the empty dress she is...

I guess Caribou Barbie needs more time to rehearse her canned responses. It is obvious that she can't speak for herself. They won't let the press anywhere near her.

oh, man! Just earlier today at work, I told my co-worker "watch McCain will try to get VP debate canceled". Knew it!

As a president, they will have to be able to deal with multiple tasks. The debate will be on Friday night, they can catch a plane to DC afterward, what's the problem?

Hmmm, our "mavericks" that claim they're going to stand up to terrorists, lobbyists, wall street, etc etc are afraid to stand up to Obama and Biden.

It didn't make any sense before but now I get it...

The McCain camp is really trying to continue the insulation of Governor Palin. Why didn't they say this in the first media message?

I have my notepad and my popcorn ready for the debate on Friday.

Can't wait to see the two candidates debate on the issues at hand.

Once again the McCain team looks for another way to hide Palin away from the press. Clearly the republican candidate has no faith in his VP pick. Not to mention the gutless act will delay his own humiliation a few days longer. What does he hope to achieve by going to washington besides trying to impress his flock with how much he "cares" about the economy.
