McCain has not said whether he will support the bailout.
McCain has not said whether he will support the bailout.

(CNN) - John McCain suggested Wednesday he has not decided whether he will vote for the economic bailout, contradicting Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's comments Tuesday night indicating the Arizona senator would definitely support the plan.

"I did not say that," McCain told reporters flatly at an economic roundtable in New York when asked about Reid's comments

Reid, who had challenged McCain to take a position on the bill, said Wednesday he had been told the Arizona senator would support the $700 billion proposal.

“I got some good news in the last hour or so … it appears that Sen. McCain is going to come out for this,” he said, according to The Hill.

Barack Obama has also not said whether he will support the bailout package.

It would be nice if your "reporting" indicated whether or not Reid also called on Obama to take a postion.

If your bias wasn't so pathetic, it would be hillareous.

Obama vote "PRESENT" because he did not believe in the whole bag
of nonsense in Washington. Better than running our country into the
2 Wars, Bankruptcy, Recession.

By the way, did you notice, McCain can't say RRRRRecession?
HE CANNOT SAY THE WORD.

NO BAILOUT! The FBI is on this, folks. They will get the money back

Does McCain ever know what he is talking about? Wrong person for the job this year and any year. As a voter do I want 4 more years of this mess? Plus he picked caribou barbie as his running mate. She gives new meaning to the word "lightweight."

America think for you   September 24th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

$700 billion to bail out wall street how about main street? America do you realize that that $700 billion that you will spend will be use to bail out Chinese banks and other foreign banks bad business and then they will sell these business back to us American. We should not let this to happen because the same mess will come back again in wall street. Wall Street greed, big CEO Payout need to have control over them. This $700 billion just show you that the republicans do not care. Congress please do not let George Bush rush you and us American into this mess. Bush has four months in power and he does not care of whatever mess that $700 billion will make.
Is that package has a plan to bail out main street as well? The economy cannot run good without main street confidence. If main street do not have money that $700 billions is a waste.

WHY are we focusing on these huge companies for the bailout?

Why not just fund Fannie and Freddie, and USE them as the instruments to retool the ailing mortgages, so that homeowners can stay in their homes? At least taxpayer money will be used for helping other taxpayers, rather than bg corporations. With repackaged mortgages, these homeowners can start repaying their mortgages, and money will flow back in.

Only after then should the Treasury pick and choose which companies are worthy of the rest of the bailout money. Executives should not get golden parachutes. The gov't. should make sure that any profits from these bailouts go back to the taxpayers. The crooked CEO's should be rewarded with prison sentences for fraudulent schemes if convicted.

ran   September 24th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Let the private investment banks make it or not on their own. Give a line of credit to FDIC banks who are willing to make a reasonable home loan/car loan/ education loan. This approach will get us back on track.

Live by greed die by greed. No bailout for private banks let them file bankruptcy. Really people the only true people who will suffer if these banks go down are the CEO and shareholders who allow the CEO to have the kind of pay package they have. Yes the employees of these banks will suffer as well. This for Republicans only because it is the greed party and the party of the rich. They do not care for the rest of us no matter how much McCain tell you otherwise.

Easy to see the origin of libtard. Libs highly critical of McCain when Obama is doing the exact same thing yet they of course aren't critical of Bambi. What intellect. And Reid stated "nobody knows what to do" yet he is critical of McCain.

LIBTARDS.

elen   September 24th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

So Obama after campaigning in 57 states as always waits for McCain to take a lead. Of course if Biden takes a lead and says that he is against bailout of AIG (American International Group, not Insurance group, as Obama thought), OBama can always say that Joe should wait before offering his opinion until Obama knows McCain's opinion. Of course, Obama can ask Bill Ayers for advise or Rev Wright, his mentors.

SS   September 24th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Supporting the bailout is NOT a good idea!!! What happens when all the other giants decide to fall in hopes of bailout. Not a slippery slope fallacy but more of a domino effect.
The taxpayer should be represented and the plan should be looked at in its entirety no matter how long it takes....................

How convenient to blame Bush for all the problems in the country...the world even. Bush was warning about Fanny and Freddie as far back as April 2001. Who refused to listen?
You want to blame this crisis on the deregulation McCain championed? Do you know what you're talking about? That deregulation was regarding things like using your ATM card across state lines.
You want someone to blame for this? Do some research! Look at Carter. Look at Clinton's policy of letting groups like ACORN bully and threaten banking companies to finance bad mortgages.
And now you want to put another Carter in the White House? Except this time, much more is on the line here, and Obama is much more dangerous. Not only in his lack of experience, decisiveness, and socialist views, but also in his one degrees of separation from people like Auchi. Look him up. Learn about your candidates.
Don't vote for Obama because you think you'll get free stuff. What you'll lose is much more important.

No one can vote for or against something that does not yet exist.

Harry Reid is as vacant as Nancy Pelosi

Free market economy exists so that companys are free to fail as well as succeed. So let the private businesses fail with not one cent of anyone's tax dollars going to support them.

Nancy Pelosi is as vacant as Harry Reid

Any bailout of any kind should include provisions that NOONE from a bailout out entity receive any bonus, incentive pay or golden parachute. and all execs of these entities must be made to resign and face any and all criminal prosecutions available.

And yes, Chris Dodd and Doofus Biden had a chance to vote with McCain in '05 to head this mess off.

Just prior to the second Iraq war, we were given dire warnings by the Republicans about horrible things that would happen to us if we didn't take care of the problem. Like sheep, we followed along. Later, we found that the dire warnings were all hype, and the real reason Bush wanted to go get Saddam was because Saddam threatened Bush Sr.

Now we are hearing dire warnings by the Republicans about horrible things that will happen to us if we dont take care of the problem. Like sheep, we are following along. Later, aftere the 700 Billion is spent, and the CEO's are allowed to keep their 300K cars, their multi-million dollar condos in Mid-Town Manhattan (so they can have nooners with their secretaries) and the rest of the country is scratching to make a living, we'll find out that the warnings were all hype.

I say let them go down in flames. If this is truly a free market society and McCain was spewing up until last week, then let's let the free market take care of itself. What we are talking about when we talk about government intervention is socialism. Republican socialism? Does anyone smell a rat?

Regardless of how the bailout goes, I just hope they eliminate ALL "Golden Parachutes" and bonuses for any executive that has a C in their title. CEO, CIO, COO, CFO..... They all should be punished for the teardown of our economy due to their total lack of leadership ability. My tax dollars shouldn't be financing their ineptitude. If congress and the senate do not make this a part of the bailout, then there shouldn't be a bailout by the taxpayers.

Truth   September 24th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

One more thing. We as Americans should not agree to bail out these financial giants who have earned more money working for these financial companies than normal everyday hard working Americans will ever see in their lifetime. These are the people responsible for the downfall, not the average everyday American tax payer! Why would our Government award irrisponsibility and failure of the few when they refused to lift a finger for those who have lost jobs in record numbers the past few years, or those who have lost their homes in record numbers?

The economy is already bad, how much worse will it get if AIG isn't bailed out? They keep saying there will be dire consequences, but for whom and what? Consequences for the CEO's and stakeholders who got us into this mess?

I would urge both parties, and both candidates to listen to the will of the people and NOT bail out a financial firm, but allocate those resources to help actual everyday Americans struggling in this economy!

Where is the Transparency?   September 24th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

John McCain – Where is the Transparency?
The transparency lies with the average American voter who can SEE THROUGH all the bull you try to feed us. Stop treating the American voters like little children. Why would Sarah answer any questions.
This act of only have her out for show – is setting women back to the stone ages. Yet another example of why John McCain is out of touch.
He fails to see that women can contribute greatly to society...........not just be eye candy. John McCain you are a sexist old pig.

Olivia   September 24th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

McCain has to set the record straight. Too many untruths and half-truths are flying around out there.

Yesterday Obama spoke and presented his points on the bailout package. To my surprise, he presented a lot of what McCain said a week ago about what he wanted in the package, as his own.

The only newsmedia to point this out was Fox.
Obama used to do that a lot while running against Hillary.
No wonder his poles are going up; too many turned backs to the truth out there.

I am so happy that Campbell brown is not getting interview with Sarah Palin. I thank McCain campaign for it. CNN is a biased network. Last night Larry king brought in Mahmoud Ahmedinezad. Does it help America. Larry King thinks that he can sit with these stupid leaders and score some points. Also this interview was most disgraceful. Myself being lived in iran for over twelve years, my friends told me that even Iranians did not watch this interview. What a shame to both Ahmedinezad and Larry king. CNN, get a life. Change your attitude and be fair to everybody. You are losing your viewership and this is a stern warning for you.

Frank from Peterborough   September 24th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

The entire McCain campaign has been about confusion. Make a statement then claim it was taken out of context or they meant it as a joke.

Remember both Palin and her running mate McCain have continued to lie about things days after the press has debunked them and then somehow manage to confuse the voters with their stances.

The only thing you can know for sure about the McCain campaign is they were either before it before they were against it or against it before they were for it. They are still not acknowledging Obama's tax breaks for 95% of Americans earning less than 250K a year with the only proposed tax increases to the wealthy and corporate elite.

Guess after 20 years of attending loyalties run a little on the short side.. And then to the Muslim family members in Kenya who are and have created one of the most violent governments in the country in decades prepare to reap the whirlwind when our borders are so relaxed from making it so much easier for the homies to come on over and bomb at will and when your right to bear arms have been stripped away by your presidential choice you can all cry foul and that this wasn't supposed to happen... so you all should start studying the Koran now so that it is easier for you to adjust... To a man that doesn't show national pride by wearing a American pin on his lapelle or put his hand over his heart or the best one yet taking the American flag off his plain and replacing it with that other symbol, reap the whirl wind when your country is less than third world

Hers is an idea! Instead of bailing out Wall Street, why not divide up the $700 Bill among US citizens 18 and over? That would mean in a population of $312 Million, estimating 200 Mill 18+, we would get roughly $300K for individuals after taxes, and $600K a couple after taxes! What happens then:
– Mortgages paid off, mortgage crisis avoided
– School loans get paid off, new start workforce has no debt
– Gov't taxes the $700 Bill, Govt gets money immediately back
– Investment back into the economy, economic downturn stopped
– investments, wall street rebounds
– cars/products sell, economy is stimulated
– Job loss halted / new jobs created
– and on and on

I know, what about AIG:
– Liquidate it, sell it off piece by piece
– Let the markets work!
– AIG employees are among the population to receive $300K – $600K

Anyone know how to get in touch with Paulsen?

They are so intent on instituting the desires of the Democratic Party apparatus–led by you know who presiding as Chairman of the Democratic Party(who has been cleverly out of the public view for the past 8 months because 1 in 3 Americans thinks he's an idiot)–have sold out their own values and instead set themselves up as the credible spokespersons for the party.

Even the suspicion these idiots–could cause a continuance of Democratic leadership in the Congress and Senate has to be a joke or flawed polls.

What a coward Reid and the Dems are, they won't support the bailout if McCain doesn't. So we're in the worst financial crisis since 30's and the Dems don't look to their candidate Obama for their cue on how to vote, they look to McCain. It seams like that would be a tacit endorsement of McCain for President since even the Dems are looking to McCain for leadership.

Robert in Virginia   September 24th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

This catastrophy is happening on the Republican's watch. George Bush/John McCain needs to show leadership and concern for the well being of the country. They both appear to be playing politics with this problem. During previous presidential and midterm elections they used fear of a terrorist strike to move the electorate. They know that one is not as promising as fear of an economic meltdown so I wonder how real this crises really is, particularly since they don't have a solution, just a request for $700B. I agree with those who say call their bluff.

It's interesting that McCain has already taken 3 different positions:
For, Against (or was it Against, For), and Wait and See, while (at least during his first 2 positions) calling Obama indecisive for wanting to get all the facts before making a decision.

All you need to know about Republicans is something called reverse psychology. Everything they say about liberals is really what they think about themselves.

You liberals are all celebrities, yet Ronald and Arnold are their heros.
You liberals are so angry, yet the Republican Party is always turning to violence to solve their problems.
You liberals are so afraid, yet they are too afraid to let go of their guns.
You liberals want bigger government, yet they are the ones to expand the government.
You liberals want a free ride, yet they are the ones looking for corporate bailouts and government contracts for their businesses.
You liberals sin/have no morals, yet they sin/have no morals but it makes it OK since they ask for forgiveness. They don't actually try to stop sinning though.
You liberals think the government should regulate everything, yet they are the ones who want the government to regulate what a woman should do with her own body.
You liberals are sexist, yet they made sexist comments about Hilary throughout her entire campaign.
You liberals want a messiah, yet Sarah Palin was sent from God.

For those criticizing McCain not taking a stance on this issue, you probably didn't read the last line of the article – you know the line that says Barack Obama has yet to take a stance on this issue.

B   September 24th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

It's tough to come out pro or against the bill when you have no real convictions or economic expertise. On one hand you have Senators who were asleep at the switch for 8 years and on the other the Bush Adminstration that ONLY wants things done its way (blank check for Wall Street), no matter the consequences. That's called putting "country first". Let's just hope the posturing ends before the market loses 1000+ points in one day if this thing fails.

Nik   September 24th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

McCain's not going to vote for it because he is sticking his finger in the wind to see which way it blows with regard to public sentiment(playing politics). He needs to gain some grounds on the economic issueAmericans are rightfully asking why bail out Wallstreet with tax payer dollars. McCain should be forced to explain in detail the alternative is the better choice- and not just make a political statement that tax payer dollars shouldn't be used for the bail out (although I don't suspect that he'll say more than that). Hillary Clinton was scrutinized for calling a freeze on the interest rates and was blistered for wanting to bail out homeowners. So now that the bottom has fallen out, we're faced with potentially bailing out Wallstreet. I hope someone FULLY EXPLAIN to America what will happen if this bail out doesn't go through.

Patrick, Fairfield, CA   September 24th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

Is this any real news, folks? McCain is well known to flip flop:

He stated on many occasions that the economy was fundamentally strong, then when AIG went belly up, he said the American worker was fundamentally strong – FLIP FLOP!

After Sarah Palin was chosen as his running mate, McCain stated that he had met with her several times and his campaign had thoroughly vetted her before making his selection of the Gov. He then stated just last week on 60 minutes that he had met her once and spoke with her a few times over the phone – FLIP FLOP!

He stated he supported the $700 billion bailout on Monday with some provisions needed before approval, now is saying that he does not – FLIP FLOP!

John McCain is either suffering from Dementia or is the best 72 year old Acrobat in the world!

More reasons why we need to go with Obama/Biden!

John B   September 24th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

The genesis of this crisis is the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), which requires banks to provide mortgages to the "underserved", most of whom are high credit risks. Banks receive CRA points based on the number of mortgages provided to these high credit risk borrowers. If a bank's CRA points are low, it runs the risk of being blocked from business building activities such as general branch office expansion and mergers. The CRA is a wholly-owned creation of Democrats in Congress, the Carter Administration, and the Clinton Administration. The subprime mortgage market would not exist without the CRA.

A special counsel and grand jury must be convened to investigate the role of politicians, lobbyists, and bureaucrats. The Community Reinvestment Act MUST be repealed, and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac MUST be liquidated and closed.

indiePA   September 24th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Bailout = more taxation (for generations) to fix a problem created by greedy bankers and uninformed borrowers. No way!! These bankers have succeeded in doing what Al Queda did not. They should be tried as terrorists. Although I believe that Congress will act on behalf of the banking industry, it should NOT allow these terrorists to abscound with the millions (billions??) in their pockets.

Shari, NY   September 24th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

Obama voted present 130 times out of something like 5,000 votes in the Illinois legislature. It is a common practice in that body to vote "Present" when you don't want to vote against a bill because you think it has merit, but would like to see it amended. Obama voted "yes" or "no" 97% of the time.

This is a perfect example of the kind of non-issue smear that has been thrown around by McCain supporters throughout this campaign.

Let's talk about the issues, but I'm sure you and your weak candidate would rather make this about personality, just like his campaign manager said.

On issues, it's an easy choice – OBAMA/BIDEN !

From shutting out the public and the press in order to coddle Palin, to changing from the deregulator to Mr. regulation in the matter of a week to turning the VP debate into dueling stump speeches and strong arming the troopergate investigation. The bailout is just a payoff to the greedy wall street execs who donate much $$$ to both sides.

Lou   September 24th, 2008 11:54 am ET

The greedy ones in the story are not only in the financial sector. The FBI should look into congress as well!!!!! If the democrats did not feel they have culpability they would be screaming for hearings to look into this. They won't because they know they would have egg on their face. We need to get rid of all these congressmen who have been there forever and have forgotten who they work for and whose money they are playing with. They act like they're playing with monopoly money not the taxpayers money. The American people should revolt and refuse to pay taxes until the government begins to act in OUR best interest!!!!

Considering how many time McCain contradicts HIMSELF, it's no surprise he would waffle on the bailout.

By the way America, pay close attention to the section in Paulson's original 3-page plan where he directs that the US banking system is to be put under control of the Executive branch of the US government.

If you are too ignorant to understand what that means, you should study the history of how NAZI Germany came into being.

He dodges his duties as a Senator, dodges serious issues as a candidate, and given his "I'm not going to tell you where I stand on this or any issue" he has no business being President of the United States.

so McCain is old and doesn't email while Obama is a gifted orator and does. My grandson could run circles around Obama in setting up, explaining and using email and electronic communications but that certainly does not qualify him for the Presidency.
McCain has been in congress over 25 years and must be part of the problem; Joe Biden has been in congress longer and must, therefore, have more ownership of the problem yet Obama chose him to be his VP candidate. Biden doesn't even know who was President during the depression or that television was not "on air" when his "grandpa watched Roosevelt calm the American people". Another gaff by the dems that the fawning press decided not to report.
McCain tried to bring controls to Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and was shot down by the dem's who refused to see the problems coming while taking the big contributions from them. The fact that Dodds, Obama and Clinton were lining up for the largest of the paychecks given out by Fannie and Fredie is another under reported story that is a significant cornerstone of the housing mess and financial problem we have today. I guess we know the price for a dem senator.
For all of those who do not want to do the bail out; I suggest you call your 401K or pension administrators and ask what the fallout will be if we don't do this. Add the caveats and resonable controls, but get it done!

Lou   September 24th, 2008 11:47 am ET

We wouldn't be in this mess if the Democrats, aka Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Hilary Clinton and the messiah had voted for regulation of Freddie and Fannie in 2005!! If the senators that had voted against this regulation had been republicans this part of the story would be all over the news. Of course, the media is covering for their friends. How about the messiah in three short years in the senate receiving the 2nd highest amounts of donations from Freddie and Fannie. Don't see that story anywhere either.

REGARDING THE ECONOMIC BAILOUT ...
What's the rush? There always seems to be time to fix things, but never enough time to do it right the first time around. Remember ... "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". The consequences of whatever is decided will dramatically affect Americans for decades ... so, why not take the proper time and steps to properly explore all alternatives. Newt suggested taking a step back and creating a plan B ... perhaps calling upon the people who advised Ronald Reagan, and turned the economy around back then. Besides, we should let the FBI investigation play out, before we decide to make a permanent decision. Like all good carpenters ... going back to Jesus ... I say: "Measure twice, cut once".

rodlang   September 24th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Neither McCain or Obama have voted on the bailout, neither has said publically how they will vote. Smart move by both, wait until the bailout bill is actually completed before announcing how you will vote.

Reid should shut up until the vote is actually taken.

NettenAZ   September 24th, 2008 11:46 am ET

He won't make a decision until Barack says if he's voting for or against the bill. This way he can do the opposite and the entire Republican party can run as reformers and find fault with DEMS and IND for putting this bill in action. I say Barack say nothing other than the 5 requests to help out mainstream American and see what John does.

Lynn in NM   September 24th, 2008 11:45 am ET

If I was a Senator, I would not vote for this unless there are some repercussions for the CEO's, CFO's and all the other greedy officers in these companies. They need to take a 75% pay cut. They aren't even worth that. If they were, the companies would not be going down the tubes. Also, the businesses need to take NO PROFIT until the loan from the government is paid off. If they don't want to accept this, they can go under. It's already obvious that they are only thinking of themselves, and not the people with whose money they are dealing. No golden parachutes.

nh bob   September 24th, 2008 11:44 am ET

the Bailout as it now stands – will be dead as a doornail – unless there are provisions to see to it that CEO's don't walk away with bag loads of taxpayer dollars – and that the geniuses on Wall Street whose greed got the country into this mess – do not profit handsomely at the expense of the taxpayer. There are other approaches that don't just give a way the store and make Paulson the King of Money.

tigerakabj   September 24th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Please. Just like the VP pick, McCain will wait until after Obama makes his move before he makes his. This bailout stuff is too complicated for McCain. Whatever benefits him politically will be the move that McCain makes.

I can't wait for the debates when Obama wipes the floor with Old man River.

Pitbull without lipstick   September 24th, 2008 11:44 am ET

what's wrong if Reid pressures McCain especially if he gave his word that he would?? Reid has balls for standing up this political hack & she-devil.

Liz   September 24th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Why don't Reid ask his own democrat candidate to take a position on the bailout. It's not in his place to ask a republican. He should be asking his own presidential candidate for his position. Excactly what's happening now is the media now is trying to say that McCain has changed his mind and so that would look bad on him. Let Reid ask his "Holy Messiah" Obama for his position because its about time this empty suit of a man come out and let his position be known to the American voters. He is always so indecisive that it makes me laugh when I hear you media coonies reporting about Obama's stance on any issue. He never has a stance on anything until after the fact. At least McCain is not just trying to get a vote so he speaks his mind. Obama does absolutely nothing and his supporters all feel he is so invincible. What a whole lot of crap. AMERICAN POLITICS IS REALLY BECOMING A JOKE NOW AND I AM SURE WE ARE THE LAUGHING STOCK FOR THE WORLD. GIVE ME A BREAK WITH OBAMA'S INDECISIVENESS ON ANY ISSUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE HAS NOT SHOWN ME THAT HE IS A LEADER...HE IS JUST A FOLLOWER.

Truth hurts   September 24th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Mccain, don't want to take a position on the bill because he wants the Democrats to do it first. So, whatever the democrats do he wants it to look like he is for Main street instead of Wall Street. That's right Harry, make Mccain take some type of position now because he wants to put the Dems in a trick bag!!

demwit   September 24th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Dave   September 24th, 2008 11:43 am ET

$700 billion bailout= federal government takeover (power grab). read the bill people. the executive branch is once again trying to make a facist move. it gives Paulson too much power and reads that the judicial system can do nothing about what the exeutive branch does. this is unconstitutional. it's going down the tubes (liberty, country) unless we get our senators and our reps in the house to vote this down.

Send the $2000 per person Paulson & Co are asking for this bailout to every American and let the bailout trickle up.

McCain likes the proposal as it is, whule Obama wants the proposal to include help for middle income America.

McCain better support the Bail Out and so will Obama. If you think your economy can survive without it then your crazy. Without this bail out your all done for. Markets and banks will fall. And also credit card companies will follow suit. Your country needs this if it is to survive till you get a chance to chane things for the better. Markets are very weak and volitile right now and it needs a boosts from the government to stop the dowward spiral.

That's all cool, 'cept THIS time he's been weilding his bottomless pit of certitude about an issue that takes some real judgement. He has changed positions so many times on this thing, I'm afraid his head is gonna' explode!!

CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS PROPOSAL

Dear Mr. American,

Good day and compliments.

I am HENRI PAULSON, the Ministry of the Treasury of the Republic of America, and the personal financial adviser to GEORGE W. BUSH (the eldest son of the former dictator of America, GENERAL GEORGE HUSSEIN WALKER BUSH).

This letter will definitely come to you as a huge surprise, but I implore
you to take the time to go through it carefully as the decision you make will go off a long way to determine the future and continued existence of the entire members of my country.

It is with deep sense of purpose and utmost sincerity that I have the
privilege to write you this letter knowing full well how you will feel as
regards.... YOU KNOW HOW THIS ENDS

Greg   September 24th, 2008 11:38 am ET

McCain needs to vote AGAINST the bailout!!

We DO NOT need further government influence on the markets; we need less. Markets will find their real value without controls. This whole issue was started by the government forcing companies to provide loans to unqualified people to fake the "homeownership" rates; a bailout simply continues to fudge the numbers.

Paris   September 24th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Reid needs to just be quiet. They are the majority, what the hell have they done NOTHING.

Democrats don’t have the courage to take a stand, and waiting for John McCain.

Where is golden boy Obama to take a stand?

nh bob   September 24th, 2008 11:37 am ET

So McCain was against the AIG bailout before he was for it, against the Bush tax cuts before he was for them, against off-shore drilling before he was for them, for comprehensive immigration reform before he was against it, against the "agents of intolerance" before he needed their endorsement, and for a civil campaign about the issues before he was behind in all the polls. And on top of that missed 8 votes on the extension of renewable energy tax credits – even when his vote would have carried the day. No wonder it is a little hard to pin down where he stands. Good luck Harry.

Guy   September 24th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Great picture. McCain acting like a mime... Is that a lesson to show Palin how to do it and keep the press away.

Mike from Calgary   September 24th, 2008 11:36 am ET

McCain flip flops so frequently that both Senator Reid and Senator McCain are probably correct – McCain has two positions on the same issue on the same day. Equivocation, Double Speak or Reneging by McCain – and he says he's a straight talker.

Let's hear from McCain about Influence Peddling with Rick Davis?

McCain and Davis haven't denied therarrangement to extract (not a bribe) $15,000 per month from Freddie Mac, and more for the Communications firm, as reported yesterday.

McCain's silence leads me again to believe he's a liar!
Country First, my arse!

alvino   September 24th, 2008 11:36 am ET

So much for country first for McCain. It is all about his chances of getting reelected. The Republican base would skewer him if he supported the bail out, and the majority of American people will skewer him if he doesn't.

the truth   September 24th, 2008 11:33 am ET

It's ironic that those of you bashing McCain for not jumping on the bandwagon don't fully realize how often, and how wrong, Paulson has been on our economy. He fully expected Bear Stearns' bailout to right the ship...and now you're ok with handing ONE MAN, with ZERO OVERSIGHT, a TRILLION dollars?

Heidi   September 24th, 2008 11:32 am ET

Failure to vote for this fiasco without provisions is utter stupidity.
Oblahma is waiting to see what McCain is going to do before putting his 2 cents worth in. That, and if he has his way he will ADD junk to the bill, just like all the Dem's want to do.

Anonymous in CO   September 24th, 2008 11:32 am ET

Not a big surprise that McCain doesn't remember what he said - the man is 72 years old. I'm sure whatever Obama plan will be McCain will follow with a similar idea. So far McCain has flip on almost all of his core values so why should this be any different.
Doesn't anyone remember Keating Five S&L scandal and the indictment of John McCain in the late 80's? Guess who was our president then - yep, another Republican named Bush. Don't you see a pattern here!! McCain has been a huge supporter of deregulation since the Reagan years when all of this started.

Check it out on factcheck – it's true! Look to the dems to blame for this mess – they had control of the reins for 2 years and DID NOTHING!

Neocon   September 24th, 2008 11:29 am ET

McCain is supposed to be a maverick. The official Republican platform states that they do not bail out private companies and would never do so. Republican ideology is that the free market must control and correct itself in order to succeed. If McCain is the maverick that he claims, I guess he will support the bail out or maybe not if it is a Republican idea. Who knows. He will spin it somehow.

Dash Riprock   September 24th, 2008 11:29 am ET

McCain can't keep his flippety-floppety positions straight in that teeny tic tac brain of his- Wow, big news flash.

JDC // Ohio   September 24th, 2008 11:29 am ET

Obama hasn't figured out how to vote "present" on this one! And probably hasn't figured out how to flip a coin, either!

Greg   September 24th, 2008 11:28 am ET

So McCain says Obama is "MIA" when it comes to leadership on the bail out issue.

The day after McCain went on his "I'd fire Cox" binge, Obama calls a meeting with a crack, smart and respected team of economic advisors and says "We'll get all the info we can and then make a plan"

It takes McCain a week to do the same thing, but he pads his meeting with Mitt and a bunch of CEO's as his "experts".

Why is McCain always a week behind Obama when it comes to doing the right thing?

Can we afford to have a Maverick running our economy? I want smart people in office, not mavericks. Mavericks are only out for themselves.

Linda from Prescott AZ   September 24th, 2008 11:28 am ET

John McCain don't know his head from his behind. He is waiting on Obama to except before he do. This is really unreal. McCain stop waiting for the punch line before you commit. Obama is a realist and can think for himself but you have to have a mirror with the answers behind it. A circle of deciet to the American People is what McCain is all about.

Vic   September 24th, 2008 11:27 am ET

Miror, mirror on the wall - whose the greatest liar of all. I'm entering into a permanent stage of cringe - brought on every time Obama supporters accuse McCain of untruths. Sounds like desperation has taken over.

I think he is waiting for the fiscal conservative Governor (Road to Nowhere) Palin to advise him.

martin   September 24th, 2008 11:26 am ET

If we talk about unified health care then we talk about socialism. If the government bails out and takes over companies then we talk about a capitalistic necessity.

Lorna, NY   September 24th, 2008 11:26 am ET

I would be against the bailout if it didn't affect all the little people. If there is a bailout, the CEO's of these companies should not get one red cent. If the companies lose money then so should they. Also, they should buy the companies below market price and sell them for a profit or at the pricethey got this way we would not be affected as badly. Remember Keating 5?

Kate in Ottawa   September 24th, 2008 11:25 am ET

Who ever heard of a system in which the perpetrators pay only with their reputation? A bail-out makes no sense unless the company heads pay. Poor government regulation maybe, but poor self-regulation you bet. Any company head with a modicum of integrity would do everything to protect the client's trust....and avoid hurting innocent bystanders, in this case the taxpayer. Who has the guts to call the penalty on this one?

Rick   September 24th, 2008 11:25 am ET

Reid and Pelosi have not contributed anything positive to this debate – nor much else for the last 2 years. They've led the biggest do-nothing Congress in history. Not a single appropriations bill for the new fiscal year starting next week. Left town for 5 weeks when the rest of the country was looking for an energy bill. They were planning to leave town this Friday until after the November elections until this crisis hit and their hand is forced. But they still get paid.

Belle2   September 24th, 2008 11:25 am ET

I have decided that if either Obama or McCain votes on this bail-out bill and the other does not, the one who votes will get my vote in November. It doesn't matter how he votes; just that he takes a stand and lets the voters know his position on this issue. I don't know whether this is the right solution or not but I know sitting on the fence will not get my vote.

John in Ohio   September 24th, 2008 11:24 am ET

This is not a battle between Democrats and Republicans, it's a battle between big government politicians and small government politicians, and there's large numbers of D's and R's on either side. The higher-up leadership in the house and senate are for the bailout, both republicans and democrats, but that's because they're already bought and paid for. New guys like Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown from Ohio are opposing the bill because they're still their own person and they're still listening to their constituents.

Peter Lodge   September 24th, 2008 11:24 am ET

The bailout still has days of wrangling and amendments. Obama and McCain can decide once the final plan is presented. Simple as that

Scott Tucson   September 24th, 2008 11:24 am ET

I see a lot of comments against a bailout of the financial system. That might be my first thought, too. But, I am also reminded that one of the problems of the Great Depression is that the government did nothing. I may be wrong; but, I would guess that the FDIC did not exist prior ti the New Deal. So, if a bank failed then, didn't the depository lose almost everything? If that was the situation, then it is a little different today. Hummm... Seems it is so difficult finding out what is best, doesn't it?

LESSON!   September 24th, 2008 11:21 am ET

Sir Alex Fraser Tyler (1747-1813) and appears eerily relevant to the situation we currently find ourselves in.

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

It's so refreshing to see both candidates taking a clear and strong position on a big and important issue. Who says pandering has replaced leadership in our political process?

Debbie Black   September 24th, 2008 11:17 am ET

No bailout. Politicians should stop and think. We have heard this before from the Bush Administration. WE ARE IN IMMINENT DANGER, from Iraq, give me immediate power, unlimited to act. That was all a lie and was used to further crush the working people of America and enrich the already rich.
Now here we go again. THE ECONOMY IS FAILING, WE WILL ALL BE DESTROYED, give me a blank check to do whatever I want. NO WAY. If the polititians do this, I will for the first time in my life, vote for every Independent Candidate on the ballot and encourage everyone I know to do the same. WE SHOULD TURN THEM ALL OUT if they do this.

This is a global economy and the globe should be involved in solutions. There are individuals and companies who have made enormous fortunes from the war, from oil, from banking, from predatory behaviors towards the American People. It is time for them to step up. If we are going to start Nationalizing things, let's start with EXXON MOBILE. If John McCain is really going to put America first, lets see him chip in, he has 9 houses, 13 cars and millions of dollars; and he is not alone.

debbie   September 24th, 2008 11:16 am ET

If we agree to the bailout, we have no guarantee it will work or this money will have been spent wisely or if at a later date, a request will be made for MORE money!

If we bailout this group-others will be holding their hands out.
like–the auto industry-airline industry–the healthcare industry, etc....

Where does it end?

Dave From Philly   September 24th, 2008 11:16 am ET

Sen. Obama has already said he wants four things added to the current bill. Sen. McCain has said nothing.

The executives and managers that created this mess should lose their jobs, their savings, and all of their personal belongings.

Home owners that were not cheated should be allowed to keep their homes. Home owners that purchased homes well above their means should lose their homes.

The tax payers of this country should not accept the financial burden the reckless people created without these things being considered.

Republicans always talk about personal responsibility, well this is personal financial accountibility.

LOL, hey people as reported last night on CNN, neither of the two major party senators are scheduled to vote on the bailout. These two political leaders who want to be President are not going to make a choice? B. Mc Bama or J. Mc Bama, there is no differance between the two both support this socialist effort to take away our freedom and liberty.
Listen to the voices of Ron Paul and tell your congress no bailout with taxpayer's money. tell them to investigate and charge all criminal fraud, included the illegal affairs of the federal reserve bank.

jm for sc   September 24th, 2008 11:16 am ET

Obama will only support the bail out if it helps homeowners as well. McCain will wait to see what Obama does so he can make a political decision rather then do what is best for the american people. McCain is a part of the commerce committee and should have been the first on board rather than holding out trying to be cute.

Lorna, NY   September 24th, 2008 11:16 am ET

Typical McCain, never remembers what he say from one day to the next. Seriously, do we want him any where near the White House?

the republicans want the dems to be the one's 'supporting' the bailout, so, they can blame it on the dems. the dems wont sign the bill unless mccain does.

Kim   September 24th, 2008 11:15 am ET

The Truth about McBush and Fannie Mae is finally going to come out. The unbelievable two faced Liar McBush will have to face his demons and stop blameing everyone else. He shies away from Bush like a leper when in truth it is McBush who brought us to this economic precipice. Bush actually tried to regulate Fannie Mae but McBush's Campaign Manager Rick Davis Lobbied succesfully against it and was paid twenty two million dollars in crooked Fannie to do it. You can lie to the voters but a Federal Investigation will be less naive and will not want to hear your war hero stories

John in Ohio   September 24th, 2008 11:12 am ET

McCain, Obama, and everybody else should be against it. And if the Republicans aren't going to support it, the Democrats had better follow suit. It's idiotic to back a bad plan from the President when the President's own party won't have anything to do with it because it is political poison and it is just plain bad.

It would be shear STUPIDITY to vote FOR this bailout package.

AIG and Lehmann Bros. WERE investment banks on Sunday morning and were converted to commercial banks this past Sunday night in a hurry so that they could take advantage of a government bailout. The committe that approved this conversion is led by democrats. The biggest recipients of money from these 2 companies was democrats.

AA   September 24th, 2008 11:03 am ET

Let me ask you something...

How much are the RNC paying you trolls to spew such wisdom as

"Failure to vote for a bailout package is an indication of utter stupidity."

First of all it is the package that is a joke. On you. Read section 8 of it where it says that the 700 billion dollars that YOU will pay for is not allowed to be reviewed, monitored, accounted for, etc. in any court of law or by any committee.

So what you are wanting your leaders to do, in all your wisdom, is to hand over the money for your schools, roads and safety to the person who had a major role in causing the problem without any oversight or accountability.

And you want them to do this as quickly as possible.

It really must be tiring carrying around that big brain of yours.

Peace.

KACW   September 24th, 2008 11:03 am ET

McCain is 100% right in asking that the bill have some agreement in it to not pay the companies managers that are bailed out more then what a top politician is paid. McCain has always said that this is a bad thing to do, but under the circumstances knows that you cant do much else, he just doesnt want it to be a flat payment with no guarantees to give something back to the tax payers.

Will this lie influence those voters? What percentage of those same voters will ever hear the truth? Why would someone as honest (?) as Senator Reid do such a thing? I guess some people will do anything for votes.

McCain can care less about you   September 24th, 2008 11:00 am ET

McCain's son resigned from the board of now bankrupt Silver State Bank in Las Vegas just 2 months before it closed it's doors. Account holders lost millions. Like father, like son.

CNN won't allow me to post the link to the news report so you will have to look it up.

McCain wants to be know as a Maverick and will do anything to do so. Even hold out his vote. He has a right to vote however he chooses, but to do so just to be a Maverick is selfish. But he has sold out his country by naming Palin as his VP so we shouldn't be surprised.

Valarie in Ohio   September 24th, 2008 11:00 am ET

I could really care less what the republicans say at this point. I dont feel I should be forced to pay for Wall Streets mistakes and so many little folk like myself have to struggle from week to week. I work two jobs, one full and one part time just to pay mortgage. I don't even know what I am going to do come OHIO winter when gas bills increase. Before Bush, I had money in the bank, 10K in mutual funds and wasn't living from paycheck to paycheck. Now, Im lucky to even still be in my house and have the 1 1/2 jobs I do have. So McCain can go sit on a lawnmower and rotate for all I care. GO BARAK

Perry, Pueblo, CO   September 24th, 2008 11:00 am ET

Obama will not vote for any bill that includes corporate welfare. I'm astonished at the hypocrisy of the GOP. Their own platform states:

"We do not support government bailouts of private institutions. Government interference in the markets exacerbates problems in the marketplace and causes the free market to take longer to correct itself. We believe in the free market as the best tool to sustained prosperity and opportunity for all."

So what gives? Bailouts are bad, as long as bailouts aren't needed? I say give these companies the boot and let them fail. I'm a Democrat, but I believe in free market capitalism. There is no way you can put all the blame on borrowers for this mess. These companies took a risk and they lost out.

No more privatizing profit and socializing loss. This is ridiculous.

Michael   September 24th, 2008 10:59 am ET

Maybe McCain is going to take the same approach his son did, or maybe he already did, pull out when you know the ship is about to sink(Silverstone). John McCain is a joke and I find it hard to believe that any Americans have even a bit of trust and faith in this guy. He will lie and manipulate, and well pretty much do anything possible to become POTUS, because he is Republican, a "Bush prodigy", and obviously incapable leader. McCain has military experience, but when one of my cousins, one of the highest ranking officers captured in Nam and of whom spent time in "Hotel Hanoi", got rescued, he knew it was because America would not forget him because he was American, period. Truly I think McCain has forgotten who he truly is, he has been corrupted by the Party that has gotten him this far. America wake up, and so absolutely no way to McCain-Palin. Good luck Mr. Obama, and stay the course!

Oh, and Voter, the Democrats are going to derail the bailout because they are playing politics with the national economy. I have called my Senator and advised him not to support it, in its present form. Why should I have to bail out George Bush's fat cat millionaire friends who infest Wall St. Is this the October surprise?? Or is something else waiting in the wings??

Funny how Mr 90% can call out Obama for so-called standing flat footed in a crisis and not offering a solution

but then McCain doesn't want to vote ya or nay for the package. Maybe he will vote Present.

And is it me or does McCain's 5 point plan look eerily familiar to the 8 point plan Obama laid out last week? I am just saying

Obama-Biden spokesman Hari Sevugan said in response:

"Contrary to the lies told by the McCain campaign, it was John McCain who followed Sen. Obama's lead in laying out principles that call for strict oversight and accountability, protecting taxpayers and cracking down on CEO pay. We only wish he had adopted those same principles over the last 26 years rather than cheerleading for the deregulation agenda that helped produce today's crisis and repeatedly opposing limitations on the obscene compensation given to failed CEOs."
