Sen. John McCain announced Wednesday that he is suspending his presidential campaign.

(CNN) - Shortly after Sen. John McCain announced on Wednesday the suspension of his campaign to tackle the economic recovery plan in Congress, his opponent questioned the timing of his decision.

Sen. Barack Obama said he called McCain about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, "after determining that many of the principles that I had set forth were ones that Sen. McCain adopted as well in terms of how this financial proposal should be structured."

Democratic presidential nominee Obama said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Oklahoma, came up with the idea of issuing a joint statement agreeing on some "broad principles" that he and McCain shared on resolving differences in the rescue plan.

McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers said the Republican senator did not take Obama's call but rather called him back later in the day.

Since McSame can't make the debate, why can't his running mate fill in? Isn't this what happens, if the president becomes inaccessable?

BM   September 25th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

McSame's age is really showing now. He looks tired and worn. To get through the debate, I have a solution so that his explosive temper doesn't show. Take two or three valiums and he will be as calm as a cucumber.Relax McShame, it's only two hours to show what you have to offer the american people. What's up your sleeve.
You are on no committee there in Washington and you are not needed, so why are you going there?

John McCain is using another of his ploys to try to steal the spotlight and thought this would make it seem like he is putting country first but he is really putting him first. Why didn't he mention in his press conference that he had spoken with Barack Obama an hour before he made his announcement?

rebup party is a big joke and the american people can't be that stupid to vote for the mchame and liarsarah ticket

It appears that this whole thing was a Bush tactic to get this bailout pushed through ASAP and Mcsame always agree with the president. Historically, 90%of the time .

BM   September 25th, 2008 7:33 am ET

What is John McCain going to bring to the table anyway? They have already made progress on the bailout and even Republicans say he is not needed there. He is pulling another fast one. Call a spade a spade. He wants to call the shots, just like those town hall meetings. Does he think he has already won the presidency?

BM   September 25th, 2008 7:26 am ET

Does McCain think everyone is stuck on stupid? Where has he been all this time?To up and cancell the debate at the last minute is nothing but a political stump.Getting back to Washington was so important that he cancelled on Letterman as well only to interview with Katy Courie, come on? This man is full of tricks.

mcshame and his party at it again trying to steal the headlines. the real american people is pulling for obama. mcshame proved again his message "sneaky" and can't be trusted

DonnieJ   September 25th, 2008 5:52 am ET

Apparently McCain cannot multitask. Therefore, he is not fit to lead our country.
