Sen. Joe Biden said Barack Obama's call to McCain showed leadership.

GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania (CNN) – As Barack Obama and John McCain make their way to Washington Thursday to meet with President George Bush and discuss the bailout package, Joe Biden heaped praise on the Democratic nominee for reaching out to his Republican counterpart on Wednesday, and continued to criticize the Arizona senator for his “lurching” position on the economy.

“In the midst of all this political blather that’s going on, all the negative ads being heaped upon [Obama], what did he do?” asked Biden. “He reached out, he picked up the phone and he called John McCain, and he said we should put aside the politics of the day and we should see if can agree jointly on the basic elements of what needs to be in this package.

“We are in a position now,” Biden added, “where in a closely contested presidential election, Barack Obama stepped up to say “John, this is too important, this is too important. It’s essential we show unity.” That’s how you change the tone in Washington. That’s really leadership.”

The Delaware senator took aim at McCain for saying last Monday that “the fundamentals of the economy are strong,” but since then arguing that the economy is in dire straits.

“You can’t be president of the United States of America and lurch so rapidly from one fundamental position to another,” said Biden. “See sunlight and then seeing nothing but darkness all in a matter of two hours. Ladies and gentlemen, you can’t gain the confidence of the nation and you can’t gain the confidence of the world when in fact you are not rooted and know exactly what you think.”

With the McCain campaign technically suspended, a McCain spokesman forwarded an e-mail response from the RNC accusing Biden of untimely partisanship.

“In times of crisis, Americans have always been able to bridge our divides and solve our problems,” said RNC spokeswoman Blair Latoff. “John McCain suspended his campaign and is working with the nation’s leaders to address this serious economic crisis and believes that it is more important to put his country before his political campaign.”

While speaking on National T.V. to the good American people, the
background plans were to call in McCain and Obama. Make this
Bailout Political and McCain can claim that he was responsible
for getting the job done.

The Huffington Post reporting McCain is spending thousands a day

Obama Biden or Move out of the Country if you can afford it

KG   September 25th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Seems funny to me that the Dems were locked in this stalemate with the Reps on the economic bailout until McCain says he's heading back to Wash DC. Now, McCain comes to town and all the sudden the Dems have reached an "agreement of principle" with the Reps.

Could it be that the Dems were simply stonewalling and using this economic crisis as a political plus for Obama? Now, McCain comes to town, the Dems can no longer play their stall game, and the Dems have to come to the table or risk McCain getting credit for pushing the issue to resolution. Pretty smart move on McCain's part I think. Make the Dems play ball and quit using this issue for their gain at the cost of the American public.

Patrick Henry, Ft. Myers   September 25th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

That shoe could definitely be put on the other foot.

Why should Wall Street be the benificiary of the largest corporate welfare bailout in history–at the expense of the American taxpayer?

Never–reward ignorance and disregard for logical business decisions–with rescue funds!!!

Its pathetic when I see voters making statements about how awful McCain is and Sarah Palin is a fake and so on. My question is How come you can put leadership, Commander and Chief, in the hands of a man that has no Political, or any other sense of Leadership, as our leader? Another thing. We see how "wise" he is with his investments when he is involved with the people who are needing bailout at this very moment. He is not interested in our economy he wants to bail out his friends!!! Grow a brain and realize America Needs a true leader, one that knows when to fight and when to find a solution.

Throw the ball of bipartisanship to McCain he will take it and run to the end zone and claim victory. I't's putting country first etc. Republicians are the only patriotic Americans. Neither Senator Obama or McCain has the leadership of their respective committee and hence there was no rush for either one to return to Washington since they could let their leadership know their position in this $700 Billion bail out. It's all about looking and sounding good by John McCain. Remember his campaign manager stating that this election is not about issues McCain will do anything to win, that is obvious.

This morning – CGI event speach.

This afternoon – Arrive in Washington for photo opportunity now that Congress announced a deal has been reached.

Oh Joe....my hero! You and Borat are the Wonder Twins....you do everything perfectly! When you're elected please don't forget about all of us folks down here in the lower "57!" Experience is knowing there are "57," states in America. Experience is going on a foreign affairs tour....shouldn't you have done that before if you are on the Foreign Intelligence Committee? Experience is being so patriotic that you now were the American flag on your lapel and might even salute the flag during the pledge of allegiance. Experience is voting present in the Senate (I was present in school too....but didn't necessary participate). Experience is being in Washington since 1972 and being the second choice of a party. Experience is actually having the guts to stand up for AMERICA. The country that we all live in. Experience is actually supporting our troops and supporting our cause (which the cause to free the Iraqi's and eliminate their threats are not new...Bill Clinton actually laid this plan out). Experience is actually witnessing several campaigns in life and not falling for the same old promises. I've voting Democratic most of my life except when I voted for Reagan. Your call for change is nothing new! A ticket or one person doesn't have all the answers and is not 100% right on everything. You must have the experience of change to vote for the person not the party. That is why I'm voting for McCain-Palin – TRUE AMERICANS FOR AMERICANS. They make the tough choices even if it goes against party beliefs. Obama is a puppet to the DNC, the teleprompter and Michelle! Gotta love his experience!!

Lesley   September 25th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

I agree with Lisa P. In the future, I hope that the American people put more pressure on the government and the legislature to protect our interests and not let institutions and their lobbyists and officers engage in immoral practices. There needs to be more government oversight and accountabilty of large institutions, not less by deregulation. McCain has said that he is the biggest deregulator reporters will ever interview. That and calling himself Mr. Free Trade. His policies are at the heart of this crisis and are partly responsible for the economic failure. Giving away the store and not asking who's buying or how they are paying for it has got to end. We need new leadership in the WH.

Mike   September 25th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Making a phone call and saying nothing–shows nothing.

Making a phone call and say: "up yours...this is where I'm going...means something.

Biden..so sad. A loser's loser. If it weren't for the very large teat of government–he would probably be a toilet cleaner.

Fact is–Obama and McCain will ultimatley approve this abortion of reality–and we..the taxpayer will be left to pick up the pieces=–and pay for it.

Obama–already making a pretty steady income and guaranteed a pension by being lucky enough to get elected as a U.S. Senator–will have no worries.
It's the rest of us–who don't get pensions for two-six years workd–who will be carrying the financial burden while this blokes writing his memoires.

If Obama was really interested in working in a bipartisan manner, he would have suspended his campiagn too and joined McCain in working on a bailout bill. Instead he steps up his attack ads, and keeps campaigning. That's not leadership. That's not patriotism. That's just Obama out for Obama. He's a disgusting example of politicians at their worst. McCain is playing games thinking that he does not have to answer America’s questions. We all multi-task in our daily lives, so do Presidents, so McCain needs to stop faking!

Palin is to busy getting complements about how she look from world leaders, to be taken seriously. Taking picture with worlds leaders who think you look good just make her seem like some VP model from America! No issues, No policies were discussed during any of these meeting, and she did not leave the country to meet them, so how can she know how their people live their daily lives, she can not in any possible way understand how our policies affect their lives!

So this is about giving Palin more time to get ready for her debate, John McCain has shown his hand! A total copout!

Now Palin has her third interview and she was babbling again, acting as if she could answer the quests that were asked her, if you don’t know just say that, stop trying to muddle through by saying as many words as you can, but not answering the question. Until she can handle a volley of questions from the media, she is just showing everyone that McCain choose for political reasons, and not for what was best for our country as a whole!

Both McCain and Palin are running scared from the debates, so as long as they run like chickens from the debates and the questions that the American people have they are both not good enough to be in office!

Ole Miss has made major accommodations to host this event and the good people of Oxford deserve this debate. It's only the future of our economic security, no big deal, right? All this walking and chewing gum talk is a clear misjudgment by Obama of how to treat a critical issue. If you're taking over the problem in 40 days then wouldn't you want to be part of the solution. Own it!

Since when is postponement of a debate a big deal for Obama anyway? McCain proposed that they have a town hall meeting every week and he declined. I can wait until Monday to hear the usual talking points. Let's fix the economy!

Cathy   September 25th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

To every McCain/Palin Supporter that thinks McCain showed leadership by postponing his campaign are just stanch republicans who refuse to see for what McCain's stunt really was.

Unfortunately, America has many crisis going on right now...but you didn't see McCain suspending his campaign when the foreclosure and unemployment rate just kept climbing. Oh but now that the big wigs are losing money....ITS SUDDENLY CRISIS MODE!!! Forget about the thousands who have lost their home and jobs because the ECONOMY IS NOT STRONG!!!!!

McCain has shown from his VP pick to now his most recent stunt that he DOES NOT think of Country First....or even his only family first. McCain only thinks of himself first with every single game and ploy he can do to get the White House.

How McCain/Palin people seem to so quickly forget only less then 2 weeks ago...McCain said the "fundamentals of the economy are strong." But now suddenly McCain had an epiphany and realized we are in the tank. MCCAIN IS ONLY A LEADER FOR HIMSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Alice Brinkley, As Obama goes to Washington to provide leadership, Biden has taken up the slack on the campaign trail. This is what VP candidates are expected to do. Where is Palin? Clearly she is not capable of picking up the slack, or otherwise McCain would not be forced to suspend his campaign to deal with this crisis. At this point in time, with the critical election looming in just a few weeks, the candidates have a responsibility to communicate to the American people to explain their positions and where they want to take the country. Clearly, McCain is trying desperately to stage a stunt that makes him look like a heroic figure, but in stead is taking action to polities the ongoing negotiations in Washington and to move the debates back to cause the VP debate to be canceled.

really McCain is showing leadership. so then why did McCain not call the committee charimens of the banking and housing. McCain has not called bernacke or paulson. In fact, he hasn't read the proposal of Paulson. However, Obama did contact the democrat congressional and senate leaders as well as paulson and bernacke. Obama's plan has been integrated into the bill. McCain did not make one proposal or idea for the bill. I don't think this is leadership especially since the deal has been made before he had a chance to walk into the senate room.

Are you people serious??? Do you have any idea what an ecnomic crisis means? Do you think we're just going to be saved from this? We are very well headed in the direction of depression, and this bailout is nothing more than a band-aid. The fact that the bailout/economy is incredibly important requires the attention of the elected officials we put in office and whom we pay for! They are there to represent us. To speak for us. No one is saying cancel the debate forever–just move it back. What is the big deal? Sure a president deals with multi-crisis each and every day, but a debate is far from a crisis and is far from necessary when the future of this country and each individual in it is at stake. And just because I support McCain's position of actually investing in our country's security/future (because that is what he's doing), does NOT mean I intend on voting for him in the election. This issue is beyond the election/candidates and is beyond each of you. Open your eyes or a book (instead of just reading what the media feeds you). That computer you're typing on may be a luxury few can afford in a year from now.

Obviously 9/11 opened our eyes to the prospects of not being "untouchable" for only a short time. What goes up eventually comes down–and we are coming down. I feel very sorry for the individuals (and their families) that treat this so lightly.

Dems are going to bring this Country down.....all because they are so full of hatred and immaturity!!

More and more it seems like Sen. McCain is an emotional, erratic, impulsive nut job. Gov. Palin is vapid and just repeats pat phrases that essentially make no sense. I expect more of the leaders of this country. These guys are dangerous manipulators.

All McCain has to do is jump on his private jet-fly to missisipi-debate and fly back to Washington –a dinner engagement-he knows nothing about economics so who is he kidding , as though he could solve anything-thank
God we have Obama and Biden.

CNN Money says Congress has the deal already done – where was McCain? They couldn't reach it without him?

I mean, come on....

They have to debate, most of the country bases their vote on the debates, so they should ALL go on as scheduled including the VP one.

I'm not a huge fan of Letterman, but he was right – if the VPs are ready to step in as president, then they should've taken over the campaigns as well if they put them on hold.

M in Manhattan   September 25th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

CNN says, "Sen. John McCain's decision to suspend his campaign is being played by Democrats as a desperate ploy from a campaign in decline and by Republicans as a courageous move to rescue the economy."

Not so fast, CNN. This Republican thinks McCain's move was pure balogna. I know many other Republicans feel this way....This is no longer a dem vs repub campaign. Many Repubs are jumping off the McPalin ship to vote for Obama. I am one of them.

Yes it is true all senators can't member a roll at the same time, that is why they have a commitee.
So, it wise to reconize that.
Mccain is not a member of the commitee, so do Obama. They can only offer their support or suggestions.

Dave, Minneapolis   September 25th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Fact of the matter is that BOTH McCain and Obama are supporting this bailout and think that they have something to offer in the 11th hour, and that something is going to be $1trillion of our money (yours and mine)
Bipartisan is the word of the day, and there is NO difference between the two parties on this point. So, voting for either one will be a vote against us.
Only the Libertarian party is against this kind of shenanigan. Both Democrats AND Republicans are bailing these companies out, and every time it's bigger. Every time BOTH parties use fear to make us think that "this can't be allowed to happen." But listen to America!! Almost EVERYONE is saying that the BAILOUT cannot be allowed to happen.
Bob Barr has stated his position on this and clear directions towards ending these problems. When you look at this issue (and many others) you see that there are really only two opposing viewpoints: Bob Barr and McBama.
People are throwing up their arms and saying they're not voting because of this issue…well, a vote for Barr is the way to send a message that you're upset and don't like McBama's solution.

Preatorian, Fort Myers   September 25th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Not really.
There is every indication he was called by JW Bush ahead of Obama about appearing in Washington–which would explain the preciptus announcement by the McClain campaign.

Fact is –a large (big) number of Americans are opposed to this $700 billion bail out.

I do not believe they understand how important thisissue is to a Large Portion of the voters–who will look at this decision by the President and Congress as taxation–without representation.

Do you recall what occurred the last time these charges were levied against the government of King George of England.

You decide.

It was reported that Obama never did get a hold of McCain when he called in the morning, and that the msg he left did not say what the call was about.
McCain was busy on the phone talking to Wash, apparently, and came to the conclusion that he had to return to Wash to help find a solution as only about 40 senators had okayed the bailout.
He called Obama to tell him he was suspending his campaign etc.
Obama, in a later statement said he would not suspend his.
President Bush later requested Obama to come to wash for a meeting of heads of state and the candidates.
Now I hear Dodd has said an agreement has been reached. I believe this a democratic ploy to give obama credit for the agreement.

I feel i live in a make-believe world, where nothing is simple and crime pays.
As for the charge of negative ads......I thought both sides are slinging those at each other, so what's Biden talking about.

I'm starting to have more respect for Bush, and even more for McCain. How do you fight this kind of spin and posturing, the total disregard of truth.

Darrel from Denver   September 25th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Try this for true country first leadership. Rather than suspending the campaign, go ahead and concede it. I think it will be the only way for McCain to resurrect his career and position at this point. He is toast and he knows it. Just get it over with.

McCain asked Obama to debate all summer, and Obama refused. Now, McCain is putting THE HEALTH OF THE ECONOMY FIRST. As a senator, that should be the first priority. Senator 1st - Candidate 2nd! Let Palin and Biden debate Friday. Everyone is hollaring that they haven't heard enough from her. McCain's suggest makes sense. VP debate tomorrow - Presidential debate next week. McCain is showing leadership and committment to this nation by suspending his campaign until this mess reaches a conclusion - Obama just made a telephone. Whoo! Whoo! Obam is just a fraud!

If McCain doesn't show up for the debate, lets ask GWBush to sit in his place. What else is he doing except searching on-line for new grazing, or hunting critters for his Crawford ranch. In fact, It is Obama's requirements outlined last friday morning for changing the original Bush bill are the ones he proposed and the ones McCain is now frothing on about.

There are a select few doing the negotiating and simply checking with the others to get input or confirmation on the agreed terms. That is how negotiations work.

If people think you can take a large crowd into negotiations and get something accomplished they are gravely mistaken and a little common sense will help you determine this.

The National Enquirer just released an update on the Palin saga and have sworn statements as well as a lie detector test to back up there story. The news media should be talking with Robson and Perkins since they are the ones who insisted on Sara being on the ticket and see what they think now!!!!!!!!

Well, outside looking in, I am convinced that this is just another Republican (Bush-McCain) Party ploy to distract the American voters. Pres. George W. Bush is still in charge, or is he returning some of his paycheck as he packs his bags to leave the White House? I (and probably many other Americans) do not buy this "campaign suspension" ploy one bit. Currently, I feel like an unprotected American consumer that has been exploited by this Administration. I do have a forgiving heart and wish them all joy, peace, and love, however I am not looking forward to additional exploitation by Mr. Mccain and Ms. Palin, although I wish them joy, peace, and love also.

He constantly follows Sarah Palin around like a little "lap dog" while Palin is acting more "Presidential" than he is. It clearly obvious that Sarah Palin has her SHREWED EYES on the Oval Office. She's banking on old man McCain kicking the bucket sooner than later. Sarah Palin is nothing but a very manipulative and self-serving, vindictive, ambitious POLITICIAN. McCain is not working with anyone-he isn't even in Washington yet! And when he gets there, it's for a photo op with Bush. He and Obama are not on the committees-they have no say in this until it comes time to vote.
So bitter, Alice? For a lot of the country, they tune out the commercials (which are never 100% truthful anyway) and don't pay attention UNTIL the debates. In a debate setting, the candidate must answer the question and not get into his agenda. And I guess you don't care to see Plain debate Biden? It certainly does. The Republicans want to call it great leadership on McCain's part and an act of true patriotism by cancelling his campaign to help with the financial crisis – yet they will not dispute it was Obama who initiated the suggestion of a joint statement from both candidates talking about the bailout proposal. Then old Johnny Mac seizes the moment and goes behind Obama's back to call a press conference to make it look like this was his baby all along!

Let's not fall for the trickery, folks. We need to call it like is. John McCain knows he is falling in the polls and wants to use this bailout crisis for resurgence of his campaign. That's not leadership, that's desperation and disrespectful to the American people!

John Starnes Tampa Florida   September 25th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

How dare McCain say "Country First" when he is clearly OBSESSED with the ego gratification of "being the President"?! He should withdraw from the race, apologize to his family and supporters and all Americans for his farcical, hateful, deceit-based sham of a "campaign". I will never forgive him nor Bush for having so dragged this country through such vile depths. And our children's children will still be paying the price. How John McCain can look himself in the mirror while shaving blows my mind. He is a shameful sad shadow of who he once was before being consumed by ambition.

Sue, Shawnee, OH   September 25th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

And guess what else? Johnny called Bushy and asked Bushy to ask Barack to come to the White!!!! And Johnny says this is not political. Yeah, and pigs fly.

Hallelujiah! It's about time a real leader showed up – someone willing to take a risk and seek compromise!

Best reason I've seen yet, and I've seen plenty of them, to vote for Obama & Biden!

Tou, Minnesota   September 25th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

The Next President of the United States is a big deal to the entire world and more important than trying to bailout these poorly managed financial firms which Congress can do without McCain and Obama. It's a political ploy on McCain's part. We need the debates. The world is watching.

Amius   September 25th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Joe,

You hypocrite. Why not just say that both Obama and McCain are trying to put partisan differences behind in order to help find a solution to a huge mess? No...you have to go for partisan advantage, even at a time like this. I would expect more of you.

Seriously   September 25th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Someone asked to see one accomplishment Obama has made in 12 years. Note that Palin has been talking about bringing transparency to DC and putting the checkbook online. Good idea.

However, I'd like you to do a web search for "Google for Government". There's one.

Jan in the 'live free or die' state   September 25th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Gibe me a break the GOP is a joke. Their behavior was the fundamental underlying that rocked the country into a financial mess; now the GOP sends its most non-economic 'leader' to return to Washington and expects that his presence will add any value. What do they expect McCain to do? More of the same nothing, can he balance his own checkbook???? What a political ploy. In addition, McCain appears to be hiding behind Bush's apron on this matter. He's out of his league....

I agree. Obama also showed that he can handle more than one thing at a time, and that he can do it calmly. There is no evidence of "panic mode" from Obama, unlike mccain who is clearly out of sorts and not sure of what to do.

How can any Senator not honor his obligation to the people of his state during this time of financial crisis? I suppose that Mr. Obama feels he's not needed in the Senate, after all, he hasn't spent much time there.

Pam   September 25th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Alice Brinkley September 25th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Biden, the reason you are not in DC helping resolve the Wall Street mess is that everyone knows you can't be helpful. All you do is shoot your mouth off (with your foot in it). John McCain did his job that the country pays him to do: get involved with the solution. The country does not pay him or Obama to a useless debate (you know, talk/talk/talk or is that jabber/jabber/jabber?)

WARNING, WARNING, WARNING WILL ROBINSON!!!   September 25th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

The McCain campaign is about to crash and burn, so since we have nothing to lose, let's do a 180 on the economy and try to hide our desperation!.

Last week, the American economy was "fundamentally sound" and today, if there is not a fix the American economy will be in a depression by Monday! McCrypt has not voted in the Senate since April and now the wheels of democracy are going to grind to a halt, if he is not in attendence???

I am getting whiplash from the number of flip flops from the McCrypt camp!

I certainly hope that bush the moron and McCrypt both listen closely to the plans of Obama, the "Messiah", since their two thick skulls will need divine intervention, for either of them to understand!

Weepy   September 25th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE ECONOMY ARE STRONG! And that is the truth of it! What is NOT strong? The stance that the Democrats take on the economy. THEY are weak spined, mealy mouthed "giveaway" perveyors. THEY are responsible for the debacle we find ourselves experiencing. THEY are the cheats and liars and "on-the-takers". Barney Frank-what a fraud. Chris Dodd-"Gosh, I didn't know I got a better deal on my loan than anyone else." Those two, and many others of their ilk-for the REAL GOOD of the country-THEY SHOULD TAKE A HIKE! We are sick of them! Of course, I can say anything here because CNN is in bed with all of them.

We saw the polls on the so called moderate democrats who say race is an issue for them and won't vote for Obama. Please do not come back to the democratic party go and join the republicans. Regardless of his motives, McCain outmaneuvered Obama on this and Obama is frustrated about it.

It's not the first time that McCain has outmaneuvered Obama, and it likely won't be the last.

I don't like politicians who have to consult with handlers (Axelrod) before making any decisions.

If God forbid we were attacked, or there was a major storm… Not 1 person would argue with the debate and the campaigning being delayed. This is as serious a crisis as either of the above mentioned. Why is everyone up in arms that McCain is doing his day job of being a senator?? We are seeing strong leadership in McCain.

Why not, it worked for years with Clinton.

McCain is not responding to a national "crisis". he is responding to a crisis in his poll numbers. The only thing transparent about McCain is his self-serving desperation to be King George #3....
I think America may soon catch on to his "Country First" Act .
How about Palin debate for him on Friday night. If she is so ready, let's put her to the test !

more importantly, joe – barack kept in touch and spoke with paulson and the finance comittee while campaigning. he did not even politicise that. it only came out when the head of the finance committee mentioned it last night at msnbc.

chris dodd last night said they have not heard a word from mccain the past few days even weeks. so why the sudden urgency to fly to washington when he didn't even bother to call and check in on them? this is grandstanding, political gimmicry by mccain.

this is just so obvious that it's sickening. it's an all time low that i've ever seen a politician dive into.

Postponing the debate should not be an option, the nation needs forward momentum and leadership now!

If McCain and Obama are not able to attend the Presidential candidates debate Friday night, than Palin and Biden should do what VP's are meant to do; Stand in for the President in times of crisis.

Palin and Biden have an oportunity to prove themselves this week and show the nation who they are. Are these candidates ready to stand up and do their jobs?
