Clinton had kinds words for John McCain Thursday.
Clinton had kinds words for John McCain Thursday.

(CNN) – Bill Clinton has long pointed out he has enjoyed a good relationship with John McCain, but for a moment the former president almost sounded like a surrogate for the Republican presidential nominee Thursday morning.

Appearing on ABC's Good Morning America, Clinton said McCain's move to suspend his campaign and request a delay in the first presidential debate was a move done in "good faith," rather than as a stunt to halt falling poll numbers as several Democrats have alleged.

"I presume he did that in good faith since I know he wanted — I remember he asked for more debates to go all around the country and so I don't think we ought to overly parse that," Clinton said, sounding a familiar McCain Campaign talking point.

A few hours later Clinton lavished praise on McCain as he introduced him at the Clinton Global Initiative forum, saying Republican presidential nominee had taken the lead in his party when it comes to climate change.

"When most people in his party were thinking that global warming was overstated and maybe even a myth — he decided to look into it," he said.

The former president also described the two trips that McCain took with his wife Hillary Clinton, “the junior senator from New York," to look into the issue.

But Clinton has also been effusive in his praise for Obama in recent days, telling CBS earlier this week the Illinois senator is better-suited than McCain to bring the country out of the economic crisis.

Clinton's praise of McCain also came days after he told CNN's Larry King Live he was looking forward to campaigning on behalf of Barack Obama, but was not planning on "dumping" on McCain.

Watch: Bill Clinton praises Obama, Palin on Larry King

"I just don't believe that getting up here and hyperventilating about Gov. Palin, or Sen. McCain for that matter, is a productive use of a former president's time and is not a vote-getter," he said, adding later he was an admirer of McCain even though the two disagree on several issues.

McCain burnished his maverick credentials largely during the Clinton administration, when he sided with Democrats on several key issues including campaign finance reform. Clinton has long expressed admiration for the Arizona senator, even during the primary season earlier this year when he said McCain and his wife are "very close." McCain did however voter to impeach Clinton however.

"They always laugh that if they wound up being the nominees of their party, it would be the most civilized election in American history, and they're afraid they'd put the voters to sleep because they like and respect each other," he said at a South Carolina campaign stop in January.

H E L L O…Palin on the winning ticket is waaaay better than Biden. He sounds like a total dummy. "During the depression, FDR got right on the television anf talked to the people". LOL. Hoover was president and there was no television. Great ticket…radical socialist and illiterate jerk.

Phillip   September 25th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Bill was a great president, and a smart man, but this election has twisted his mind. Obama is almost identical to Hillary on all the issues, and McCain is against everything Hillary stood for, yet Bill is so bitter about the primaries that in a race between the two of them, he would rather praise McCain than say a kind word about Obama.

wayne n   September 25th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Have mercy! Have mercy! Lord, have mercy! I can't believe I supported and voted twice for this man who now is so concerned about when, where, and about whom he hyperventilates, especially, God forbid, when it would be helpful to the Democrat presidential nominee. Please forgive me!

kim   September 25th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

I used to really like Bill Clinton but I am getting really tired of Bill and this weird attitude. I cant stand sore losers……

Lucas   September 25th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Honestly, This is a disaster… what the hell is he doing?? Palin believes that global warming is a myth!! He knows that he can sway the vote and he wants to be back in the white house…. he is interested in himself… not the country and its a discrase!

John Rico   September 25th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Bill Clinton, the man right wing republicans hate the most, gives John McCain much praise. Hrmmmmmm I wouldn't call him two-faced just quite yet.

Baze   September 25th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Bill's making sure that he doesn't burn down the last of his bridges, and trying to save the G.O.P. so there are still bipartisan relations when Barack is president. It's a good strategy.

It's all about the money people!

We all know repugs and neocons have lotsa bread so Slick Willie is pandering to them with false praise for their guy and guess what – they will donate to his cause.

Hypocritical? You betcha.

Will it raise money for his cause? You betcha.

KG   September 25th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Seems funny to me that the Dems were locked in this stalemate with the Reps on the economic bailout until McCain says he's heading back to Wash DC. Now, McCain comes to town and all the sudden the Dems have reached an "agreement of principle" with the Reps.

Could it be that the Dems were simply stonewalling and using this economic crisis as a political plus for Obama? Now, McCain comes to town, the Dems can no longer play their stall game, and the Dems have to come to the table or risk McCain getting credit for pushing the issue to resolution. Pretty smart move on McCain's part I think. Make the Dems play ball and quit using this issue for their gain at the cost of the American public.

I BELIEVE THAT THE EX-PRESIDENT, THOUGH HE IS INTELLECTUALLY INCLINED, YET LACKS WISDOM. BILL IS ALWAYS ABOUT BILL AND IS NOT TRYING TO HELP HIS WIFE AND NOW HE IS TOO FULL OF HIMSELF. HE REMINDS ME OF O.J. AND NOW SEE WHERE HE IS AND ONE ADVICE THAT I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE IS THAT PRIDE COMES BEFORE FALL AND IF HE CONTINUES ON THAT PATH HE WILL BE A FALLEN HERO AND NO ONE WILL REMEMBER HIS NAME.

Chris   September 25th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

OMG….is there no way to put him some where until after this election?
I mean I've met this man in the White House when he was in Office and I had all the respect in the world for him even doing the whole Monica thing. But, since the primaries and now this lukewarm support of the Democratic ticket, I'm just loosing that respect. Do we not all remember Bill saying the Republican were out to get him while he was in office? Uh, wasn't McCain a part of that group? Okay, enough said!!

Ronnie, CA   September 25th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Obama wins '08 and Hillary will never be the President, and the Clintons know it. But if Obama loses, she is the Dem.'s candidate in four years for sure and goes back to the White House in 2012. They are the biggest true politicians this country has, next to Bush, and are leaving that doubt out there on Obama for a reason: They absolutely want John McCain in '08.

aware   September 25th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Right Bill!

Obama's disingenuousness is disgusting! He did refuse 10 debates with Senator McCain because he did not think they were in his best interest! Obama first! :(

The former president's comments re: Senator McCain and the environment were excellent as well!

Bill Clinton offers respect and honesty as a former president rising above the current Obama dishonesty and hypocrisy!

McCain/Palin 08! They are authentic, country first reformers! :)

Hey Alaska for Obama. You better get the History Books out. I think you need to study up about the Presidents. It just demonstrates the ignorant people that are voting for Obama. You might be able to get on Jay Leno's show as one of his "Jaywalk Allstars."

Proud Soldeirs Mom   September 25th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

CNN the truth should be known. Stop blocking posts!
Obama, is and always will be Obama first.
The first speech Obama has ever given was in college. Page 108 of Dreams from my father.
I quote from Obama's book.
Obama- "Listen Regina, I said , cutting her off, "you are a very sweet lady, and I'm happy you enjoyed my little performance today. But that's the last time you will ever hear another speech out of me. I'm going to leave the preaching to you and to Marcus. Me, I've decided I've got no business speaking for black folks"
Regina- "And why is that?"
Obama- "Because I've got nothing to say, Regina. I don't believe we made any difference by what we did today. I don't believe that what happens to a kid in Soweto makes much difference to the people we were talking to. Pretty words don't make it so. So why do I pretend otherwise? I'll tell you why. Because it makes me feel Important. Because I like the applause. It gives me a nice, cheap thrill. That's all."
Regina- "You don't really believe that."
Obama-"That's what I believe."
Regina- "Well you could have fooled me. Seemed to me like I heard a man speak who believed in something. A black man who cared. But hey, I guess I'm stupid"
Obama-"Not stupid Regina. Naive"

He refers to his speech as "a little performance" and as "preaching". He calls his friend Regina, Naive for believing what he said in the speech.

Now I know a lot of computer programmed Obama BlogBots will deny what I have posted, and say it's all a lie. That is what they are programmed to do.

I knew he wasn't going to do anything to help. First he said he'd do it after the Clinton global initiative this week. Now he told Larry King last night that he'll campaign after the Jewish holidays. That's after October 9. Why doesn't he wait until after Halloween?

He never misses an opportunity to praise McCain and Palin and his wife. Then he throws Obama in like an afterthought.

Bulldog   September 25th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

McCain is currently still sending out his paid campaign spokespeople to campaign for him on the cable news networks. That is not suspending a campaign like McCain said he was going to do.

you know I have never had any respect for Pres Clinton but after seeing him on Larry king last night. I am shocked That he has moved to a much more centrist position on his view of politics. I really liked his interview and it was open very blunt and open on the issues there was no hint of partisan politics in his words just blunt truth. I am shocked that in the very long and open interview the only part they chose to pull out and post up here was his comments in regard to Sen Mc Cain

Bill who? McCain in Washington today was as useful as teets on a bull. His desparate campaign is falling apart.

We need a grounded, patient leader who rejects knee jerk, hail mary shenanigans, and last time I checked that was Barack Obama.

DW, NY FOR OBAMA '08   September 25th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Bill and Hillary are still very upset over hillary losing this nomination. It's sooooo obvious. But, Obama will win this election and Bill/Hill won't be able to say they had a thing to do with it. I'm sure neither one of them, billary, thought Barack would get this far along in the polls.

Go Barack Go!!!

Chicken's come home to roost.   September 25th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Glad to see we have a Bailout Bill Deal … and that McCain's stunt yesterday had no bearing on the outcome … he just got to Washington and played ZERO role.

Jude   September 25th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

McCain has no excuse now since bailout plan is agreed on. We're on the DEBATE NOW!!!! Stop the gimmicks and game ploys…

Al   September 25th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

I watched the interviews with Mr. Clinton and he was right. He feels that it's a waste of his time to run a smear campaign. I see no problem with that. Although he heaped praise on McCain, he also heaped praise on Obama saying that he is the right choice to take this country forward. Mr. Clinton wants to go out and campaign for Obama based on issues and policy. Obama and Biden should take a clue from Mr. Clinton and do the same.

Disappointed   September 25th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

I am disappointed in Bill's support of McCain. I agree with other posters that he is perhaps bitter about about Hillary's loss, and he needs to curb his comments even if he believes otherwise. There are still far too many undecided voters that he can influence. People need to understand that the President should be able to do more than one critical taskat a time, and suspending your campaign 40+ days from one of the most important elections is just absurd. If he can't handle the economy and prepare for a presidential debate, then he certainly can't serve this country as president.

Pete   September 25th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

This is the reason why Obama did not choose Hillary–Bill is a LOOSE cannon!

Sean Chong   September 25th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Daniel from FL   September 25th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Clinton needs to just stay locked in his Harlem office until after Nov. 4. He even is parroting McCain's arguments about "wanting to have more debates" (town halls)!!! If I never realized before who ruined Hillary's chances at the presidency, I certainly realize it now! I used to love Bill Clinton, but right now I wouldn't spit on him if he were on fire!

Chuck   September 25th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Bill Clinton is or was one of the shrewdest political campaigners around. He knows exactly why McCain suspended his campaign and is trying to cancel the debate. Yet he prasies McCain knowing it was a pure poitical stunt. Obama can and should not trust this guy. He is all about finding a way for his wife to run in 2012. But he fails to understand that he is messing with someone who can out-smart him and who is even shrewder, Barack Obama. People have wondered why Bill has not been more active stumping for Obama. Now you know. Obama has purposely kept him at bay knowing what a danger he is. Nice try Bill, but you are dealing with a person who could teach you a thing or two about political strategy.

ShirleyY - Seattle   September 25th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Bill Clinton refuses to be an Obama-mind-controlled hatchet man for the Democrats. I admire him for that.

Bill Clinton has worked hard to make his foundation non-political, and he's not about to change course for an arrogant, I'm-better-than-you Chicago politician.

Whether Hillary Clinton decides to run in 2012 or not, Bill isn't getting sucked into hero-worship of the The One. Clinton – both Clintons – run circles around Obama.

They're not about to let Obama define them. Or order them around, for that matter.

Daily Kos is starting talk about the possibility that McCain has had a mild stroke. There are diaries showing video from yesterday compared with two weeks ago – his left eye is half the size of the other one and looks strange. Could this be the real reason for trying to cancel the debate? Could he have something else going on such as a brain tumor?

Sarah Bell   September 25th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

McCain demonstrated leadership and country first when he suspended his campaign to address an issue whose fall out could result in another great depression. Obama didn't have a clue how serious this is. He blew it off with a multi-task comment. President Clinton can't speak the truth of how he feels. Wall Street money and CNN News beat Hillary in the D.P. And Obama's money people are helping her out of her 30 million dollar debt. Blackmailing her.(no pun intendend).
And now……..It's the Obama money backers on Wall Street that are broke and the country is in a bind. The real deal here is this: Mr. Wall Street is walking down main street and busted us. He needs a tax cut for the middle man to keep his top men employed. But there will be no new jobs for it. I wish I could debate him. He has such an elemetary mind it's unbelievable. I was thoroughly convinced Elvis was dead when Lisa Marie married Michael. If Obama wins….I will be totally convinced America's brain is dead.

This is sad, transparent and infuriating. Bill Clinton's narcissism is pathetic. His disloyalty outrageous. And if he thinks the Democratic party will stand behind him and his legacy and Hillary and her future when this is over no matter the outcome he is sadly mistaken. He has a history of thinking he can do ANYTHING and then get forgiven. On this he is wrong.

He's right, McCain has had to fight his party to do the right thing on every issue. He has always tried to convince Republicans to do the right thing.
Does anybody see a problem with that? His party is ALWAYS on the wrong side of an issue. And he has to battle them. History has shown us, he doesn't always win those battles. Maybe he gave up trying to get his party to do the right thing and decided to follow his party into the abyss instead of leading them into the light. That is why he abandoned everything he believed in and stood for. He wanted the support of his party instead of the right thing.

Dick in Sioux Falls   September 25th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

If John McCain was in such a great hurry to get back to Washington, how come he canceled Dave Letterman, but since the taping of that show was the same time as his taping of the Couric interview, how much of this prevarication (lying) are we supposed to swallow?!

Bill Clinton is fast becoming yesterday's news. It was during his administration that much of the control of the banking industry was removed. It is increasingly clear that the Clinton's have not given up on 2012. Such perfidy within Democratic ranks!

To the computer control – I've never said this before, because most of this took place yesterday, not weeks ago when I questioned Bill Clinton's loyalty to his Party's Nominee!

barbara miller   September 25th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Bill,
You're just darned lucky that Obama is not going to lose. You say one thing one day – and a different thing the next. WAIT A MINUTE – no wonder you're praising McCain:)

Dan from california   September 25th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

If you want to know about the Clinton's politics read the book "You can't be President" and you find they sabotaged not only Howard Dean but Kerry and obviously now Obama. Typical Clinton power play, Chris Rock on Letterman nailed it if you watched the other night.

Dameun Strange   September 25th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Honestly, I could careless what Clinton thinks. He is self-serving opportunist trying to sabotage Obama's campaign. Sad thing is people will remember this next time his wife calls. I am fairly certain if it were Hillary running he would dump on McCain.

Bill you continue to prove me, right…throughout the 90's when everyone was singing your praises, I knew who you really were. We can win without you. Go back to your exploitation in Harlem.

Independent in NC   September 25th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Why is this listed as filed under Barack Obama first, when the article is about Clinton and McCain?

I hope Obama and McCain are paying attention. I've never been a big Clinton fan, but he does know his way around polictics. Good for him for being able to acknowledge the strong points of an opponent and find ways to utilize them.

Obama-Talk talk Talk Talk. Instead of making a decision between "Yes" or "No" Voted Present 140 times.
Biden – Plagerist who has called his running mate "an articulate clean black man."

Great ad from Obama on the economy…meanwhile McCain's ads are still running and his advisors are still talking and Palin is scheduled to attend a rally in Philadelphia today. McCain please take your marbles and leave. I am so tired of the circus act. I still can't believe Americans want to vote for someone who has 13 cars, 8 houses, voted against raising minimum wage, and voted against equal pay for women. He doesn't put country first, he has missed the most votes out of the current Senators…on absent…he is first!

CarolO MI   September 25th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Nothing wrong with that. You can like a person you worked with but it doesn't mean you support his policies. Cinton is smart enough to know that bashing someone brings in votes for the other side, as well. He's smart, tactful and always has been. He is campaigning and endorsing Obama so who needs to more more?

Former President Bill Clinton is ridiculous! He is just throwing an "undercover" tantrum because Hillary did not win! No one was truly fooled by his great words and mediocre display at the convention, we all know how he truly feels.

I wonder how much praise he would be lavishing on John McCain if Hillary had become the nominee!

Go to bed GRUMPY!!!

Johnny Gentle   September 25th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Wow, McCain looks more and more unqualified to deal with a crisis than ever. This is just another member of the old guard, good ole boys trying to prop up another fellow good ole boy. But we got news for ya, real change is coming. You can take the Bushs, McCains AND the Clintons back from whence they came.

But does anyone actually believe that an 8PM debate has anything to do with showing up to vote for a proposal?

A proposal that has already been worked out even! McCain is trying to look like the saviour, but his white pony came in just a little bit too late. Oh well, John, time to start planning the next reactionary stunt!

WASP Member!!!   September 25th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Bill Clinton would be a diarrhea mouth on McCain if Hillary was the candidate. He is still a sore loser. His praise doesn’t change the fact that McCain is a liar!!!!

Amy in Woodstock, NY   September 25th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Bill is such a sore loser. He is not promoting Obama. He is working on a Clinton 2012 strategy. And for that, I have lost ALL respect for Bill.

Would the Real Bill Clinton please stand up!
Who is this man? And what part of the Democratic Party does he
belong to? Hi appearance on Good Morning America has proved to be a Sad Day for America! He sounds like he's making a bid for the New Member of the Republican Party! They can have him!

Brent   September 25th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Whoops!

McCain supporters are trying to spin his return to Washington as a "Country First" approach to the economic crisis, but yesterday his campaign inadvertently released a list of right-wing TALKING POINTS to the media about how he's "suspending" his campaign until the bailout bill is completed.

Talking Points? Still sounds a lot like "Politics First" to me.

Kate   September 25th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Wow!! This is an event held bipartisan, held in Clinton's name, for a cause he believes in. Do people expect him to slash someone's name who is helping him with his inititive. Both Clinton's have done more than what is required of them for Obama. They support him, not McCain. Doesn't anyone remember when Hillary was running that she alway talked praise on McCain. She is his friend, but doesn't believe in his politics. End of story. You talk nice about your friends, doesn't mean you vote for them.

ME   September 25th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

kevin   September 25th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

I am an ardent Hillary supporter. She is the woman. I feel bad for Hillary. Because of Bill's stupid remark- Hillary lost black votes. Even if Hillary wants to run in 2012- is not it politically correct to keep his mouth shut today? Is not it safe to show ,"Oh we have been after Obama- but sorry he lost- so i am running- all Obama supporters- come to me"..Probably that is a better way to get Obama supporters.

Bill needs to go back to his closet. He is losing his legacy- and he is not able to see it.

Swing vote   September 25th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

You go Bill tell them Obamas supporter that this COUNTRY NEED HELP FIRST. McCain is helping bailing out in good faith not OBAMA FIRSt.

silencedogood   September 25th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Clinton's comments are right on and add to my respect for him.

Bottom line: McCain has proven yet again that he is a true patriot, has sound judgment, and is willing to make tough decisions. In other words a real leader. Obama seems content to just vote "present" on the economy.

It is absurd for Obama, as a sitting senator and presidential nominee, to refuse to engage this difficult issue by sitting down at the table with the combined gravitas he and McCain would bring and working on this tough issue.

Biden says we need to debate the issues, well, the financial crisis is THE issue right now. Just as with the Russian invasion of Georgia, Obama is sitting on the sidelines while McCain is out on the field.

CM   September 25th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Bill still has memories of the maverick McCain. Too bad he's not in active politics anymore to see what McCain has become.

I still believe that Bill has a greater plan in mind and he probably told Obama the outline when they met for lunch.

Independents still trust Bill, this way he doesn't come off as partisan but will gently persuade the undecideds to go for Barack.

jim, kansas city MO   September 25th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Democrats for McCain   September 25th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Buried on page two, we are reminded that McCain has been inviting Obama to debate MANY times and been turned down. Asking Obama to step out of the campaign celebrity spotlight and into an office to work on dire economic issues probably won't suit him well. Ditto for the Presidency.

Loud & Proud Leftie   September 25th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

McCain's grandstanding exposed (from Joe Sudbay)

At 10:00 a.m., Congressional leaders are meeting to work on the bailout deal:
Congressional Democrats and Republicans on key committees are nearing agreement on a Wall Street bailout package and will sit down Thursday morning to craft a final bipartisan plan, according to a Democratic source.

The aide said that “not too many” issues remain unresolved for the 10 a.m. meeting
Because John McCain is campaigning in NYC, he won't be there. But, most of the Congressional leaders really don't want him there anyway.

At 4:00 p.m., (ABC News reported via email) George Bush, whose approval rating on the economy is at 16% with a 76% disapproval, will be hosting the White House photo-op (that's what Barney Frank is calling it). John McCain will be there for that session.

Let's be clear: McCain will miss the meeting about substance. But, McCain will be there for the grandstanding. You know the Palin/McCain campaign is secretly hoping there is no deal. For them, no deal means no debates

Arkansas Undertaker   September 25th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Everytime Bill Clinton opens hisa mouth now a days He upset me.
This man wants Obama to loose because he cant stand giving up the Power and Leadership of the Democratic Party. And this is very SAD.

Even if Barack looses, which I dont think he will, Hillary's chances of being President have been shot to hell because of her husband.

Bill Clinton's legacy is in the crapper, especially with African Americans.

Canuck   September 25th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Why is it that through this whole crisis Hillary Clinton has looked the most presidential? And seems to have the best ideas to boot. Americans, you really blew it. You had a chance for an amazing leader. Now you're stuck with McCain or Obama. Good luck with that!

It is pretty obvious that he wants Obama to lose so Hilary can run in 4 years. McCain will mess up things even worse, and Hilary will save the world. How disappointing that he is acting so two faced. I am disgusted with Bill Clinton and in the past year I have almost been wondering if he has something medically wrong with him from his surgery. He says inappropriate things often. This and the way he was on Letterman the other night-there is no excuse. You are a Democrat Bill, act like one!

Bill needs to go away for a while. Didn't he also talk about how "hot" he thinks Palin is?

He has not been helpful for the Obama campaign, and as an American patriot and citizen who is deeply concerned for the future of our beloved country, I fear Clinton has put self ahead of both party AND country.

It's a shame, really. I liked him so much when he was president, and I voted for him twice.

Becky   September 25th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

I'm looking forward to the debate tomorrow night, whether it's with McCain/Obama or Palin/Biden.

Heather, Cleveland, OH   September 25th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Get the hook and yank him off the stage, dems. It's not the fact that he refuses to "hyperventilate" over or "dump" on McCain/Palin. It's all these little backhanded slaps like repeating McCain's "town hall" talking points, saying that a race between his wife and McCain would be a lot more civilized and generous praise of McCain while barely mentioning Barack Obama.

I think it's obvious to many dems what's really going on with Bill. He thinks it's not, but it really is. It sucks that Obama not only has to run against McCain, but now he seems to be running against a popular ex-president.

This will be remembered in 2012 if Obama loses in 2008.

McCain has been looking for an excuse to avoid real confontatin. How handy that the US economy had to melt down to give him an excuse. He is just like Bush that had too much to do to care about the Katrina victims. MULTITASKING is not their strong points.

If you know how to use a computer you can get a lot done with out beingin the same room. McCain is not involved in any of the commities that are worki ng the issue, so him GRANDSTANDING to pretend he knows something is not what is needed.

What is needed is for the candidates to stand up and let the people see and hear what they are really thinking abut hte future of America.

McBlackberrys will help the economy   September 25th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Can you say bitter?

BTW McCain made it to DC just in-time to see both sides agree. I knew they needed the guy that knows nothing about the Economy to save us.

He just went in there and said-

"My friends, the fundamentals of this economy are strong…uhhhh…i mean that we are headed for a Great Depression!" All nodded and signed. Wow! Hero! POW!

Don from California   September 25th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Bill is doing this too often for us not to think that something is going on with the Clintons. I heard that when Obama was down and he met with Bill, Bill demanded a few things in order for him to help Obama in his campaign. I think Obama has dropped the deal now that he is dominating the race, and Bill is making him pay for it.

Arin   September 25th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

I wouldn't buy a used car from Bill Clinton, would you?

Why are so many Obama supporters so hateful, reading some of these posts where people call aother people horrible names and say terrible things about eachother… makes me ill, not joking makes me sick in my stomach. Why on earth are you like this? I know that most of you are young, however if youa re voting you are at least 18 and that young brashness should be winding down by now as you become more wordly.

I Pray for this country and the poeple in it to have more tolarance for one another, I pray every day for this.

You have to remember BIll Clinton has a stake in this whole process himself…

1st his wife wants to be Prresident and Bill would love to have the ear of which ever candidate becomes POTUS so that he can lean on him to help with his efforts and do things with the Clinton Global Initiative and even the William J Clinton Foundation.

Come on people, Bill is going to be Bill…

I do not blame him or believe he is being Two Faced. Bill has an agenda as does McCain and of course Hillary… Bill is going to say anything and everything he can to get whatever he wants and needs.

Considering that McCain was speaking at Clinton's Foundation, I don't think that would have been appropriate to attack him do you???

Seriously, what was he suppose to say about a Presidential Candidate whose support he would need in the future??

This isn't news..it's called being SMART enough to not burn your bridges!!!!

McCain has been a liar in this election and has sold his soul to the Republican right wing. Bill I voted for you twice but I am losing respect every time I hear you speak.

Bill Clinton is full of it. He is still trying to hurt Barack despite what he says. That is the very reason Hillary was not picked as VP. It is getting to the point that every time I see Bill Clinton I want to throw up.

Mike G   September 25th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Yep there goes the underhanded sabatogeing of the Obama campaign. Bill can't let it go so he just adds to the problem some how some way. He has had more strong good statements come out about McCain instead of Obama his parties pick. What a good guy to have around for help for the other side.

True politician, don't throw mud because you never know when you need them. Why don't people say what they think. John McCain is too old to be president, he can't do two things at once. Sarah Palin is window dress. The questions she answers any American can do the same thing. The GOP is a one trick pony, it will not work this time.

Love Bill when he praises Obama, yet turn around and rip him and call him names when he gives Mccain a little praise.

John McCain and Palin need to get a tent for the circus they are both running. They are making themselves into total jokes, constantly telling lies, feign knowledge that they do not have, and showing the world how fake they are!

This is exactly why Obama could not choose Hillary as a running mate. Big Mouthed Bill is at it again.
I am positive of one thing.. If Obama loses ,the behind the scenes stuff like this and best friend of Hillary (Lynn Forrester DeRothschild) endorsement of McCain will be remembered by many. No way she will have my vote in the future. Yeah Bill and Hillary – how about Country first for real !

The Clintons are trying in VAIN to get us to vote McCain without just coming right out and saying it. Hillary has a great relationship with McCain and may be able to get a great position on his administration.

No OBAMA, He bashed, and trashed this phenominal woman, and the Obama supporters are using your votes for their gain.

Preatorian, Fort Myers   September 25th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Perhaps because Clinton knows better than anyone else–much of what we are facing today–is due to his own policies on degregulation, global economic expansion (anyone remember most-favored nation status for China), and ignorance or the need for oversight of the impact of a diregulated banking industry. Hello OFF SHORE BANKING, hello BANKS ACCEPTING MORTGAGE BACKED SECURITIES AT LOW RATES, thanks Bill C. you reallly grew the economy *(on paper).

No doubt Bill would lavish praise on McCain–since he was against nearly everyi policy decision Clinton came up with except Vietnam and veterans healthcare.

"They always laugh that if they wound up being the nominees of their party, it would be the most civilized election in American history, and they're afraid they'd put the voters to sleep because they like and respect each other,"

I am in the Northeast Pa. 20 miles from Scranton. Between the Clintons meeting with the McCain people and the lack luster support given to the democratic party I think Leiberman and McCain aren't the only mavericks.

DKW   September 25th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Sounds like a endorsement!! LOL…LOL

I feel sorry for you Bill   September 25th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

I think Bill is having a hard time giving up the reins of the Democratic party. It must be difficult for him -to have had all the control and then watch some other candidate take that lead-especially the candidate that beat his wife for the job. It is time to move on, Mr. President. We are about ready to have another Democrat in office and it won't be a Clinton.

Hillary   September 25th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Can someone please remind Pres Clinton that he is a Democrat? Stuff a sock in his mouth or somehting. He derailed Hillary and now he's trying for Obama.

He's still out for number 1, himself.

Pam   September 25th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

More proof that he wants Obama to lose so his wife can run again in 2012. Not going to work, Bill, give it up.

Republican Supporters in the Dark   September 25th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

I truly believe that the former President is on a personal crusade for Obama to lose the election. He has more positive things to say about McCain, than for Obama. The only positive thing he usually adds (in his opinion) is that he believes Obama will win. I think he is still bitter from the primaries. I was warming back up to Bill Clinton after the Dem. Convention, but now I am really not pleased with the way he has been putting the knife into Obama in a subtle way. Shame on you Mr. Clinton.

Don   September 25th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

blake   September 25th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Irrelevant…

McCain is finished. If he goes to the debate he looks wishy washy…

If if does not go to the debate he looks cowardly…

Either way this is a win for Obama because millions will watch the debate, with or without grumpy pants.

bridgette   September 25th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

I think it is time for Obama to just put him back where he came from. He is still angry that Hilary lost and he has not gotten over it. Everyone knows that it's a ploy by McCain to try and stop the VP debates. I think Obama should just tell him don't campaign for me anymore. Thanks but no thanks is what he should tell this man. Because he has no intentions of ever fully endorsing this man and he seems to be doing pretty good without it. I have lost a lot of respect for this man.

Steven McCarthy   September 25th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Bill needs to learn to shut his mouth. He is no longer President! Someone needs to remind him of this.

Franky   September 25th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Well, the former President does have a good friendship with Senator McCain and I believe him. I do believe Senator McCain wanted to do this in "good faith" but guess what? Perception is reality…I'm sure you agree with that, right President Clinton?

Well guys, I'm gonna be gone for an hour or so but I wanna see this bailout plan they have. Hopefully when I come back later, we should see some action on the plan…

Frank,MO   September 25th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Bill Clinton knows that the Obama/Biden administration will outshine his legacy and leave not even a comparison. He does not like that … too bad.

Candy West Virginia   September 25th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Forget Bill, they have reached an agreement on the bailout and mccain wasn't even part of it! hahahaha. You people are now seeing the real mccain, it was a political ploy not to keep him from debating but to keep palin from debating.

VIRGINIAN 4 OBAMA   September 25th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Mr. Clinton, McCain did this as a political stunt. It's plain and obvious to see.

Brian   September 25th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

I wouldn't say that's lavishing praise – yes McCain has admitted that humans are partially to blame for global warming, but he appears to be quick to retract that belief now that the right wing, along with his vice idiot, have pressured him to pull back his pro-environment views. It won't be long before he's calling for drilling in ANWR and forgetting entirely about alternative energy sources.

M in Manhattan   September 25th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Big deal. He praises McCain. However, he still believes Obama is the correct choice for this country.

Mike, Syracuse NY   September 25th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

My opinion of Mr. Bill has moved up a notch. In truth, he probably feels that McCain would be a better choice than Obama.

nikki   September 25th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

You know, I am from Arkansas and wish Bill Clinton would shut his face! I thought I would never say that, but he is hurting the party. We all know that Hillary did not win….Bill get over it. He just can not bring himself to respect Brack. Bill needs to remember that when he lied about his relationship with Monica, we all stood behind him even though he was in the wrong. Boy how people forget what you have done for them!

Glenn; Bakersville, NC.   September 25th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Hillary helped McCain during the primaries, now after her loss Bill is helping him to the General Election. Isn't it time to throw them out of the Democratic party already??? Everyone knows she's just setting herself up to the 2012 Election, with Barrack as a running mate then. It's shameful and obvious.

MD, TX   September 25th, 2008 1:45 pm ET
