The wife of a U.S. soldier serving in Iraq will join Michelle Obama at Friday night's debate.
The wife of a U.S. soldier serving in Iraq will join Michelle Obama at Friday night's debate.

(CNN) – Sen. John McCain has not yet confirmed whether he will participate in Friday night's presidential debate, but Barack Obama's campaign is moving forward with its plans for the event.

The campaign announced Thursday evening that Michelle Obama will be joined at the debate by Shannon Kendall, whose husband is currently serving his second tour in Iraq, according to a press release issued by the campaign Thursday evening. Kendall, a mother, met Michelle Obama during a recent roundtable with military families in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Friday's debate will focus on foreign policy, a topic agreed to by both presidential campaigns before the nation's financial system and broader economic issues took center stage two weeks ago.

I am a military wife. I personally feel she is bad news for America. She does not speak for all Americans or all military wives!!
Why don't some you that are quick to balme the Republicians take a hard look at Congress. The people we have elected into office have let us down NOT just President Bush!

McCain!!!

Good   September 26th, 2008 1:17 am ET

I have a brother who is a soldier...DID YOU GUYS EVEN READ WHAT YOU ARE BLOGGING??!! I think any time we speak of our soldiers no matter what your political affiliation is you need to take time and say THANK YOU!! I mean for you mccain supporters...you get all happy when he gets in the 'way back machine' and talks about being in the military. There are people who are serving and we forget. I'm glad that Mrs. Obama is making a senitmental stand, and no i don't care that it may be a ploy. who cares!!! That same soldier is not putting his magic GOP cape on to save the day. He or she ACTUALLY IS saving the day. And for WHAT? They are under the pretence that they are helping YOU. So READ the actual article!! Especially those for Mccrazy.

While watching the interview with Governor Palin conducted by Katie Couric of CBS I suddenly couldn’t comprehend anything being said by Palin . For a moment I had a flash back of the novel entitled Stepford Wives. John McCain defiantly has to send her back to be reprogrammed because nothing made sense, and this woman is a heartbeat away from a 72 year old person running for president. With Halloween just around the corner I couldn’t think of a better trick and treat than this Republican Party this is very scary election. Go Michelle

Bobe   September 26th, 2008 1:03 am ET

I think McCain should not go to any debate. It’s pretty obvious he doesn't know much so why should it bother anyone that he's not there? The apparent lack of intellectual curiosity on the Republican ticket is pretty scary. McCain's unsettling rashness in decision making and the thought that Sarah Palin is next in line should 72year old McCain win is enough the keep me on my toes until this whole thing is over.

Matt, PA   September 26th, 2008 1:02 am ET

Michelle is the worst. She isn't even proud of her own country. Obama could care less as well. He wants to campaign and debate. He is derelict in his duty as a US Senator in dealing with domestic issues like the economy. Thankfully John McCain puts country first.

Obama pays women in his office 77%, of what men are paid.
0bama has taken 936 million dollars in earmarks
Obama has taken 126,000 dollars from lobbyist
Obama friends with Raines which made 90 million at Fannie Mae, and
Obama adviser.
Obama's shady deals with MR. Rezko
Obama friends with Mr. Ayers, who bombed the pentagon, and said he wished had done more
Obama has never made a decision, voted present 130 times
Obama's listen to preacher, who preached racism, and hate for 20 years. Wife full of hate. Not First Lady material.
THAT'S NOT A VERY GOOD RESUME

McCain and his "old Navy Pilot, Hanoi Hilton , POW, war Hero' comments and bragging points will certainly NOT be missed! I am so sick of him beating those old drums! If that is all he has to offer he may as well pack up his kit and go home! Please, don't let him be there, and let the American people have an intelligent conversation with an intelligent , candidate, who, with any luck at all, will be the next president of the USA ! I cant believe that so many Americans can put Mccain down for looking out for ALL OF US. His history/past and present speaks loud and clear. How blind can you get. This man is a hero and has given of himself throughout his lifetime. His commitment is with NO doubt with the people of America. Nobody in their political mind would set aside his campain for a stunt. He has always put US first..........His wife too has given so much. Michelle, what has she EVER done?

Some of the 'slams' here to Democrats would be offensive, if they weren't such a reflection of the same old, same old smears the McCain campaign has run..... since Day 1. Now they have reached a point of just being ludicrus.
That's ok, it's about rising above the fray and taking well thought out action, rather than be mired in petty battles and posturing. I so look forward to the debates, whenever they are....
Oh by the way,,, Palin finally took a 3rd interview... 4 questions in NYC at Ground Zero... her positon on Iraq,,, absolute Bush policy. Transcript is here on the CNN site, if you want the very limited rest of the Q and A....
She was also interviewed by an anchor,,, Katie Couric I think. Her international policy about Russia being her 'neighbor'... Paraphrased, pretty accurately,,, 'Putin raises his head and flies into U.S. airspace,,, over Alaska,,, oh and not to forget,,,, Alaska has 'trade' with Russia.... hmm...... I'm REALLY looking forward to that debate.....
Substance over form wins every time.... :) :):)
So, come on with the slams, and efforts at smears..... Give it your best shot... Oh, you already did that.... Hmmm... so, how did it work?
Substance over form... my friends, substance over form.....

I agree with previous comments that Michelle will be a stunning First Lady!

Sabrina   September 26th, 2008 12:09 am ET

I think that Palin should debate Obama on Friday. She has more executive experience, is ready to be President, can see Russia from from Alaska, is great with the press, answers questions with ease, has foreign policy experience – I mean Canada is right next door and to top it off the Pakistani PM thinks she's hot.

Come on America – Palin is ready to jump in for Sen. McCain RIGHT NOW!!! PALIN ' 08!!!!!

Mccain is only trying to get back at Obama for not having the townhall meetings he proposed in the beginning. This is so childish but for an old man it is not unusual. Old men are always trying to get a pay back. After this election we should put a limit on how old a person has to be to run for president first or second term!

Charlotte- We complained in the Saddleback Forum because McCain was pandering. Don't be ignorant..do your research. Obama has a LONG and EXTENSIVE record on a whole host of issues. Again, you show ignorance. Obama voted 'present' 130 times in the Illinois State Senate because it was common practice to do so. He has sponsored and voted over 830 bills and legislations. As an Obama supporter, I can tell you he will most likely vote yes to this bill.

Americans   September 25th, 2008 11:59 pm ET

The repulicans don't have a clue. They keep talking about Obama was scared to debate McCain in the town halls. Obama was to smart to fall for that trick and but I see the repulicans on here still did not see the trick being played. McCain at the time was only pulling in a few hundred people to his town halls and the media was not covering him, he was short on money so he wanted to debate Obama in his town hall meetings because Obama draws a bigger crowed and is always covered by the media, so he wanted the free marketing by using Obama to reach more people.

So for all you repulican supporters who think Obama was scared you are the idiots because you did not see the play being made Obama did. McCain tried it again by trying to postphone this debate but again Obama was to smart to fall for it. Do any of you republicans wonder why McCain is always asking Obama to do something he request? It is his way to try and make himself look like the leader and everytime Obama don't agree he looks worst. Obama knows the game and a leader set the tone not follow it. McCain entire campaign has been based on tricks, like the Celeb ads, Palin pick all the atack ads and now the debate postphonement. Are you guys really that stupid to fall for a trick master instead of a real leader. By the way where is Palin?

malclave   September 25th, 2008 11:57 pm ET

Personally, I think McCain should debate.

If he feels his presence at the negotiations in Washington are too important, Palin should go debate Obama in his place. Granted, that would help Obama out a lot, by placing him up against someone of roughly equivalent preparation for the office of President.

If Palin does take McCain's place in the Presidential debate, then she should sit out the Vice Presidential debate. No worries, though... jsut give her time to Biden, and let him keep talking. He'll make the McCain campaign's points himself, given the chance.

annie - never again a dem.   September 25th, 2008 11:57 pm ET

barry hussein obama is still a senator and still taking a salary from the tax payers so he should be working on this bailout plan also. OK, so Mrs. NObama is bringing her "military friend" to the foreign affairs debate... will she bring her "economic friend" to the economy debate?

This "friend" is very clearly being used as an object to manipulate opinion of NObama's shortcomings in the foreign policy arena. This low behavior is just the latest gimmick in a long history of wool pulling.

I totally respect the military way of life (I myself am an Army brat), but this attempt at pandering to the military community is nothing short of sickening! It takes more than sitting next to a hero to be one.

There's really nothing Michelle Obama has to say that I want to hear when it comes to the military or anything that her husband's campaign contrives to dispel her patriotically challenged beliefs. I find their manipulations distasteful and for the sole purpose of trying to get her husband elected. Let's just call this what it is – a ploy.

Barack and Michelle Obama continue to demonstrate their focus on Americans and the country.

McCain is having a senior melt down. He suspends his campaign and Letterman show to race to Washington DC, only to spend his last but of credibility by not racing to Washington DC, staying in New York and interviewing with Katie Curic (a better deal), staying the night in New York and appearing at the President Clinton foundation where he kept a high profile, then mooched over to Washington DC.

Barack Obama is rock solid and dependable. Michelle Obama will be a wonderful First Lady.

Tom   September 25th, 2008 11:03 pm ET

If McSame fails to show for the debate it should be a wake-up call for any 'undecided' voters. Let's face it, there is nothing so important going on in Washington that McSame can blow off the debate. It's only one night. If he's a 'no-show' it's a very bad sign. Obama should show up regardless. Sure the GOP will try to paint him in a negative light but Americans expect a debate come h*ll or high water.

Independent Montanan   September 25th, 2008 10:53 pm ET

Good for you, Michelle. Military families are suffering myriad difficulties because of this war. I doubt Cindy McCain would invite a soldier's wife, or a soldier for that matter, to join her at any function. What would she have to talk about? Her designer wardrobe and jewelry that costs more than a soldier makes in a year?

Barack Obama warned that John Mccain going to Washington would be interjecting presidential politics in to the bail out negotiations! He goes and he interjects partisan politics! This crisis has been covered up on purpose! Held to create a sense of urgency! Now, John Mccain wants to show leadership! He has been in Washingto for 26 years, and his leadership in deregulation and a free market without oversight is now fortelling. John Mccain suddenly wants to go to Washington D C, where he has been an deregulator for 20 yrs! He has a unique situation, his policies and lobbyist friends are responsible for this mess in the first place! He had an opportunity for over 20 years, to fight for regulation, oversight and less lobbyist influence in Washinton, but he chose to go with his republican party 90% of the time, which is a major reason for this debacle! This is just another political stunt by John Mccain to grab a spotlight! He and his party was for the Iraq War! Which has cost Americans taxpayers1 trillion dollars! He wants credit for a surge that is incomplete, but no credit for costing taxpayers 1 trillion dollars or for supporting going after Sadamm Hussein instead using the full might of our military, to go after Bin Laden!
His hindsight like the surge and stopping his campaign after the fact to fix his judgment errors in policy illuminates his inadequacies and ignorance! We need a proactive president who forsees major problems and have the wisdom to safeguard America's interest! We have seen this urgent demand for congress to move and the people of America to follow this president's judgement quickly without inspection, oversight and scrutiny! Remember the Iraq resolution to go to War, the Patriot Act that took away many civilian rights and violated the privacy of ordinary Americans! I do not TRUST THE REPUBLICANS AND GEORGE BUSH AND THAT INCLUDES JOHN MCCAIN! REMEMBER MCCAIN AND BUSH HAS BEEN SAYING THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THIS ECONOMY IS STRONG!

It's about time Michelle Obama did something for the soldiers. All the Obama ever did was say how they were against the war. It took him running for president for her to be proud to be American and to do something for the soldiers serving in Iraq.

I can't see how anyone can think she would be a great first lady.

TOWN HALL MEETING AFTER ALL. NOTE TO OBAMA BE VERY CAREFUL.

with what is going on in the country at the present time, the conflict in Iraq has been pushed to the back pages of the media. Let's not forget our men and women that are still over there putting their lives in danger daily. I think it's only fitting that Mrs. Obama host the wife of one of our soldiers. Presidential debates should go on as planned; McCain is just trying to get attention to him after last week debacle "the fundamentals of the economic are strong" and Rick Davis mini-scandal. He is just a political opportunist, polls are down for him, his VP has no clue and is not ready to debate anyone (including myself) and he is trying to cancel, postpone anything if it helps his campaign. McCain is a joke.

I say, if McCain does not show, and even if he shows up, let's bring on Nader, Barr and Mckinney and let's have a pluralistic debate. The same about the VP debate, let's bring their VP's as well if Sarah Palin does not show up. Enough of this _____ (fill in the blank). This is the only way to show that we do not agree with their Karl Rove tactics.

Pandering? Obama can only win a debate if he is the only candidate, and then it would depend on his answers. The Saddleback forum was not good for him. I missed it, but when the Obama-bots started yelling McCain knew the answers in advance, I knew Obama had tanked. If he is the only one, who will they blame then? Oh yeah, the moderators were too hard on him. Isn't that what they blogged and complained about regarding one of the other debates? It took a skit from SNL to point out the bias in the media. Obama doesn't have much of a record to actually show much of a stance on anything. I will not be surprised to learn he won't vote yea or nay on this bailout. He'll most likely miss it because he's running for President and that is more important, to him.

Mel of Alexandria, Virginia   September 25th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Please wake up McCain supporters, he is taking you for a ride on the wild side. Then he laughs at you under his breath to know that so many can be fooled all the time as long as the perpetrator wraps himself in Old Glory and whistles Yankee Doodle. All of us should be aware by now

John McCain will be there. He wanted media attention and he got it!
Every time things are not going his way he "gambles" and does
something to take away the momentum of the Obama campaign. I don't think we need a gambler. We need someone who takes time to make decisions. We need a president who can multi-task and not "suspend" something when a crisis occurs.

Lilly 2   September 25th, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Great Michele! Did you find just the right one who will tell the world how awful it is to be a United States soldier's wife? Maybe you can get her to exude some of the hate you have for this country.

i wonder if this is obamas idea of foriegn policy. and shame on him to use his wife as a prop for his campaign. im glad that any president has people who advise them. that get paid to give them answer and help make decesions. if not i couldnt imagine the fallout from that. but i will say it is kind of mrs. obama to have a military wife at her side. i`ll give many points for that. but i wont say i think it is something she did w/o hubbies strong input. that man is beyond power hungry he has a greed of it. i`d rather vote for elmer fudd.

Lilly 2   September 25th, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Wow, lighting into McCain for wanting to see us through a crisis istead of debate Obamie. What about all the opportunities McCain gave him to debate town hall style? What's up with that? You Democrats live by a double standard.

DWoods   September 25th, 2008 9:53 pm ET

Michele, keep up the solid support for America and for your husband.

Maggie   September 25th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

McCain will be at the debates. Have no doubt about it. It's just another GOP gimmick to keep everyone interested. This economic problem is due in part to his twenty something year record of working to deregulate the banking industry. As a member on the Commerce Committee, McCain's agenda was to give banks the freedom to write their lending laws with little oversight from the government. The government is supposed to lookout for the best interest of the people; not industry. John McCain got it twisted somehow.

Do some research people! All this information is free and open to the public. Visit the Library of Congress. It will tell you all you need to know about the congressional records of both Barack Obama and John McCain.

USN for Obama   September 25th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

I love that MIchelle is bringing the wife of a military member. I'm retired U.S. Navy, having served for 23 1/2 years. In addition to (MANY) other things, I have been ashamed that McCain, as a Former Naval Officer of MY NAVY has stooped to the levels he has during this campaign. Although I respect his FORMER service, he has definitely behaved 'dishonorably' during this entire process and I do not want his 'service' for MY UNITED STATES now!!!
The military is traditionally mostly R, but it is changing also. During so many campaign speeches, McCain has made it a point to have 'uniforms' in view of the cameras. GUESS WHAT MCCAIN, NOT ALL MILITARY MEMBERS OR VETS SUPPORT YOU!!!!!
There are several Veterans for Obama groups, and I'm most definitely one of the members!!!!

I am not one to normally put election material on my private vehicle, BUT I have a 'CHANGE' placard from my local campaign headquarters proudly in the rear windshield of my cars. Guess what???? My license plate frame says "Freedom Isn't Free – U. S. Navy Retired"........ My bit for sending that message to any undecided military personnel.. :) :)
Hmm... White woman, retired military,......Guess that means I'm 'supposed' to support McCain. NO WAY!!!! I'm a 'critical thinker' (hmmm,... I actually have a brain..... OMG! (and 2 master's degrees), and I've shot cannons through McCain's bull, as well as seeing the comprehensive, thorough and feasible nature of Obama's plans. Not to mention that overall, I deeply believe Obama represents the BEST HOPE for MY UNITED STATES than we've seen in a very, very long time!!!!!

You Go Michelle!!!! Thanks for sending this message to the military folks/vets out there!!!!!

I am looking forward to the debate on foreign policy. Those of you who think the topic should be changed to the economy, think a bit about how foreign policy and the economy are completely intertwined. If it was not for the foreign policy mess, the economy would be far better off.
Peace.

CB   September 25th, 2008 9:47 pm ET

What's sad is that some people will continue to blindly support a man who "can't walk and chew gum at the same time." Had he been involved earlier, I'd understand his "concern" now. However, I find it quite odd that as soon as it's time to debate he deems it necessary to be in Washington– unsettling negotiations with his political shenanigans. I wonder what excuse they'll have when it's Palin's turn. Bottom line, if you're not ready today, you're not ready. If you can't multi- task, you're not ready. If you can't handle a simple Presidential debate, how will you handle foreign policy negotiations?!
I don't know him and cannot speak on his character (other than what the media shows me), but I can say that as a team, McPalin is not prepared to lead America– especially in our current state. Call Obama's ability to organize simple if you'd like, but that's what we'll need. Any real change starts from the bottom– from people energized and empowered to be catalysts of change.

lodigg   September 25th, 2008 9:46 pm ET

I am sick and tired of the antics of McCain. It seems like he is running scared. I think it is sad that Palin allows herself to be used for sexism to bring so called "energy" to the republican party. He only added her to the ticket to try to win female voters. To me–that is sexist. To allow yourself to be a token just to be in the spotlight, is just "Palin dumb. "

Kate Fergus   September 25th, 2008 9:45 pm ET

Considering this is one of the most important presidential elections in our history, it seems unconscionable that McCain is making such a mockery of it. Choosing Palin as a running mate, refusing to debate, and rushing to Washington to save the economy of which he knows nothing, make it clear that he is not presidential material.

Add to this all the lying!!!

No McCain and Palin!!

A panel of questions for the Absentee McCain that he can practice and answer later...like what the BLEEP were you thinking when you chose McPlane for your running mate? SUSPEND your campaign...was it a bad one (like a bad child in school)? Was that a political tactic (the DC meeting)? If so, you apparantly didn't mind to risk the US and the international economies for your own political gain to 1) avoid a debate 2) to "appear like a non-partisan or bipartisan leader"??? HUH? sawsan mahboub   September 25th, 2008 9:10 pm ET

banderson   September 25th, 2008 9:10 pm ET

Don't worry McCain will be at the debate he just likes pulling the American people and the media's chain. I hope this guy goes down hard.

Ron was a REP now a DEM   September 25th, 2008 9:10 pm ET

Michele Obama will be a great First Lady.

voter   September 25th, 2008 9:09 pm ET

Good poker bluff Obama. Continue to put the pressure on by saying you are planning a town hall if McCain does not show up and have a woman whose husband is in a 2nd tour of duty. McCain will be there. He does not want Obama to have the stage all by himself.

sjp   September 25th, 2008 9:07 pm ET

a very nice touch by ms. obama, its good to know she is willing to be open with groups and meetings like these. also good to see the truth in the fact that the dem ticket is far from ducking the military and families, rather being proactive to all.

B. Smart   September 25th, 2008 9:07 pm ET

Great. And if John McCain doesn't show, turn it into a town hall
meeting / campaign rally / pre-inaugural gala.

Bald ex-warrior   September 25th, 2008 9:05 pm ET

Not every Hero is a warrior.
Not every American who has paid the ultimate price has perished.
All across America there are the wives, husbands, sons, daughters, and parents of those who have died. And these are the souls who pay the highest price of all.

It is good to remember that the pains of more than two decades ago are not an entitlement to behave badly. Honor is for those who behave honorably. Bravery is for the Brave.
If an honorable man loses his honor, he is no longer honorable.
If a brave man runs away from conflicts that aren't going his way, isn't brave.
He may live to fight another day, but those who depended upon him probably will not.

Let the debate go forward, let the candidates show that they can walk and chew gum while seeing to the needs of the nation.
Let's see the depth of their respective "benches/teams"

And remember, this isn't just about your guy winning, this about having someone in the Office of the President who will lead the American People.

Not the Blue or Red People.

But ALL of us, Christian, Pagan, Jewish, Muslim, Atheist, whatever..

I am so proud of Michelle Obama, she is showing America that there are positive African American women out there. She is going to be a great first lady.

Kudos Michelle! Thank you for continuing to focus on reaching voters. You'll be a great first lady!

Military Wife   September 25th, 2008 9:01 pm ET

Wow...I am speechless...as a military wife who has been married to an Air Force officer for 15 years and who's husband is about to deploy to Iraq for his THIRD time, I would proudly sit by Cindy McCain over Michelle Obama any day!

Just a Mom   September 25th, 2008 8:59 pm ET

If Sen. McCain doesn't want to debate then, the Obama campaign should invite some Independents like Bob Barr and Ralph Nader to participate so there can be a serious discussion of the issues amongst serious people.

Lourdes   September 25th, 2008 8:59 pm ET

But McCain is willing to sell this soldier's wife out and dodge the debate altogether! For shame.

McCain, who only 2 weeks ago was touting himself as a "deregulator" (who admittedly doesn't know a lot about the economy) and who 1 week ago said that the economy is fundamentally strong, has all of a sudden gotten the memo: deregulation is at the heart of our financial woes and the economy is tanking. Now he's sinking even worse: waiting out the public's response to the bailout package before taking a real stance, spending a few hours in Washington for photo ops, and thoroughly politicizing (and mocking) a process that required sincere negotiation. His shameless political pandering will ultimately hurt the American people. Country first? I don't think so. Campaign first is more like it. John McCain has made a mockery of any honorable intentions towards aiding in this economic crisis.

We cannot afford McCain as president. He is an opportunist and a liar.

Please post me CNN

Don   September 25th, 2008 8:58 pm ET

Military, really........ When it is not a photo op Obama skips the military!

Billy   September 25th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

Keep pressing with the debate, it's too important not to have.

Ashamed   September 25th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

Big deal!!!!! Not interested in hearing about Michelle. Why don't she just go home and look after her kids.
