Palin: Russia's my next door neighbor

Gov. Palin visited with firefighters near the World Trade Center in New York City Thursday.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin defended the claim that Alaska’s proximity with Russia helps bolster her foreign policy resume in an interview released Thursday.

The Republican VP nominee, asked by CBS’s Katie Couric what she meant by that statement said: “That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land - boundary that we have with - Canada.

“…our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of,” said Palin.

The Alaska governor, asked if she had ever engaged in negotiations with Russia, said the country had swapped trade missions with her state. “It's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border,” she said.

“It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to our state."

Palin has spent the week meeting with foreign leaders in New York, as she seeks to boost her national security and foreign policy credentials.

  1. Voting for Obama now

BTW – why hasn't she added Canada to her resume? It's next door as well.

Who are these people who actually believe this mess that she has an actual argument. When we were in the cold war- Alaska was NEVER, let me repeat, NEVER in jeopardy of being attack. Hawaii is more so than Alaska.

Russian planes fly through Alaskan airspace, therefore Palin has enough foreign policy experience to be V.P.

I live near the airport with jets from BA, Lufthansa, Air France, Alitalia, Aer Lingus, Varig, Swissair, etc, etc flying over me. I guess that makes me qualified to be Secretary-General of the U.N.!

America needs new vetting laws for vp candidates.

McCain's pick of Sarah Palin places the security and well being of the United States in great potential jeopardy.

Are we truly unable to prevent this occurrence again?

  5. Vote Republican because

    McCain Checklist for VP ...

    Woman... Check
    Attractive... Check
    Republican... Check

Enough said... I want her on the ticket...

No regard for Intelligence, Experience or anything that would qualify her as a VP or if worse comes to worse POTUS.

McCain's judgement is questionable at best, dangerous or lacking of any intelligence at the worst.

If this were Obama's VP choice FoxNews would never stop talking about it. Double Standard????

  7. Here's My Thoughts

I think that people are giving her too hard of a time. She is not just a neighbor to Russia, but plays an intricate role in governing the borders that Russia must at least to soem extent. And that is ultimately what she is trying to stress, at least I hope it is... Of course, it may not make her as qualified as Biden when it comes to foreign relations–at least in terms of experience, but it does give her something.

I would like to see Palin go back to Alaska and be the governor of a state that she is suited to lead.

This is out right funny – worse than the late night show comedy.
Great to know that BO will be our President and we dont have to worry about this funny Pitbull with a Lipstick. What an insult to the American Sanity.

People who STILL want to vote for this fashion parading hunter, GOD SAVE their POOR SOUL. AMEN

You Republicans need to stop being in denial. Palin is a farce, Mccain's judgement is pitiful and your demeaning of Obama is a joke.

On a serious note, I feel sorry for her. She should really withdraw from this race. As a women, I am greatly offended by the image that is being protrayed here. She is making all women look bad!

-For all those HC voters, surely you dont want a woman in office so bad that you would just take anyone. I would love to see a woman in office also, but one who is on the same track with HC. Sarah is no where near capable of being a heartbeat away from the Presidency. We already have one idiot in the White House, let not make the same mistake twice.

Incredibly, there are about 5-10 delusional people who have posted on here who actually think that Palin is a good candidate for VP. Those 5-10 people are amazingly misguided. How can you defend this woman who can't even form a coherent thought, but claims she'll be ready on Day 1?

Since this woman has been asked to be VP, lets be for real, the McCain campaign has treated her like nothing but a pinup girl. You know what, you can say, Phoenix is hating or whatever, but I've seen better. When she opens her mouth, she looks even worse. Jane, where do you fake Republicans get that from that liberals are afraid of Palin? If anything, they're happy she joined the ticket. This yet again sends the signal that Republican operate on fear and ignorance. I'm ashamed to say it since I am a Republican. We (Republicans) should be afraid of her because a McCain/Palin win will mean the end of our party. The only real threat she served to the left was attracting disgruntled Hillary voters, and she was too dumb to do that.

Now we all know why the Republican party is censoring their candidates from the press.

Whats that McCain? To busy to debate for an hour or two.

Obama is not ahead by 30 points because this country is still remarkably racist. If he were white, the Republithugs would be focused on 2012. And now suddenly they are concerned about sexism? Talk about a deathbed conversion!

I could care less about Palin She's a joke and not worth talking about.

What I need to talk about is this bailout. Now I really think my head is about to explode. What the "F" is going on. Now the repugs are saying we should take our time. whaaaaaattttt!!!! Isn't our country about to fall into a depression if we do not act quickly.

The repugs really believe that we the people forget what they say from day to day, they must. How could they even think this little stunt that they are trying to pull would work if we remember the extreme nature of this situation. No more credit of any kind will be given if they don't get their gazillion dollars!!!! The whole country will stop functioning!!!!
Isn't this what they told us!!!

This slow down that is happening couldn't have anything to do with all the difficulties that McCain is having with his campaign. Is this McCain's next shiny object? I believe that he has misjudged us, the American People. We have been through to much over the past eight years. Aren't we all starving for something to have hope about. GOD,
I know that I am. The only hope out there is Barack Obama. He does mean hope for this country. He will pull us together.

If your not sure about how you are voting, go for HOPE
    VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN

RJ,CA and Abby, Like the rest of the Americans who actually believe Palin is a suitable VP, stop hiding behind racism and bigotry against Obama or stupidity. Obama and Biden are our best hope. Open you eyes to America's ability to defy the status quo, march boldly into the future, and not only meet challenges but excel because of those very challenges. JB

a trojan horse perhaps? how many of you have ever "acted" dumb? i know i have just to avoid being asked to do things i didnt want to do. thus the saying dumb as a box of rocks. yes playing dumb has its advantages. palin didnt get to where she is being stupid none that are in politics have. so before you actually think shes stupid, listen to her actually speak and the debates are upon us already. predjudice isnt just being a hater. pre-judge.making a verdict before you actually hear any facts. listen to what she has to say at the debates and if you dont like it then have your say. i for 1 havent heard anything from palin other than speechs.

Ken, I was a Hillary supporter too and this woman is as more worse than that miss teen usa girl. You can lie to yourself all you want. I was going to vote for McCain I am actually a volunteer in one of his offices but this is too sick to watch. I called our captain and bailed ship. Our office in OH has lost 4 people this week switching to Obama all who were true Hillary followers. I am sorry but this is not going to cut it this time. I would rather vote for the lesser of the 2 evils.

I am disgusted by those who try to defend her STUPID comments today. Yes I said it, STUPID. Lets be honest the presidential race is not a high school populartiy contest. It shoulod be about who is best fit to lead. I.E. who has the intelligence, judgement and knowledge to lead. To vote for someone just because of party affiliation no matter the qualifications is STUPID.

AND BY THE WAY HILLARY LOST. SHE RAN A GREAT CAMPAIGN BUT SHE LOST. LETS FACE REALITY..
