Terry McAuliffe is laying groundwork for a gubernatorial run.

(CNN) – Terry McAuliffe, one of Hillary Clinton’s most outspoken backers during her presidential bid, is laying the groundwork for a run at the Virginia governor’s mansion in 2009, according to Democratic sources in the commonwealth.

This week, McAuliffe hired longtime Virginia political consultant Mo Elleithee to start planning a possible statewide campaign, should he decide to run. Elleithee spent the last year working alongside McAuliffe in the Clinton campaign as a senior spokesman, but in recent years he has also helped steer Tim Kaine and Mark Warner to signature Democratic victories in Virginia.

The former Democratic National Committee chairman is expected to make his decision after election day on November 4. Meanwhile, McAuliffe and Elleithee were at state party headquarters in Richmond on Wednesday, greeting various Democratic officials. On October 6, McAuliffe will headline a speaking forum “with special guests” in Arlington, hosted by HillPAC, Clinton’s fundraising arm.

If McAuliffe enters the race, he will face off in a three-way Democratic primary next year against state Sen. Creigh Deeds and state House member Brian Moran. Virginia’s Attorney General Bob McDonnell is expected to run for the Republican nomination unopposed.

I'm an Obama supporter but I don't understand why Obama want's to continue to keep campaigning instead of working on the economic situation that is happening right now?

He seems very reluctant to go to D.C. and have his name stamped as someone who helped put a plan into action, and it's disappointing to me because I decided to vote for him based on his speeches and how he was going to fix the economy. I think most of us agree that we are confident in what Obama plans to do. But he has a perfect oppurtunity to show us that his words have meaning right now, and I just don't see him willing to take the action.

I have to agree with McCain on this one. I think pushing aside the debate and the pointing of fingers long enough until we have this very serious issue resolved and I believe it is more important than campaigning right now.

In Virginia, Governors can only serve one term. Tim Kaine can be Governor again in the future, but not hold office two consecutive election cycles. This is why other Democrats are putting their hat into the ring for Virginia governor.

It sounds like McCain can't multi-task. What are you going to tell Putin, "I had these budget issues to deal with the last couple of days and I'm just not going be able to prepare for our summit. Can we reschedule? Can you hold off on invading more sovereign countries till I get back to you?"

McCain suspending campaign

Isn’t your Vice-President supposed to jump in for you when you are unavailable? Why isn’t Palin handling campaign appearances and functions with McCain going to Washington. Either they do not have confidence in her to do this (Why is she your running mate then?) or this is just a political ploy. I sure hope it is the later. If she can’t handle running the campaign for a short period of time how is she going to jump into some domestic or diplomatic emergency?

ANCHORAGE, Alaska– An Anchorage Democratic Representative wants the Alaska State Troopers to find out if laws are being broken by anyone attempting to convince witnesses not to testify in an inquiry of Gov. Sarah Palin.

It's the latest allegation in what has become a bitter dispute between the Palin administration and the Legislature, something the McCain-Palin campaign calls an absurd political maneuver.

There are already two investigations into abuse of power allegations lodged against the governor, but Rep. Les Gara wants one more

Terry McAuliffe is a walking sack of lies. Don't let him run Virginia into the ground like he did the Hillary Clinton campaign.

Harry   September 25th, 2008 11:06 am ET

I don't believe many of my fellow Virginians will welcome Terry McAuliffe's sudden interest in the affairs of our commonwealth. While his big bucks may buy him a high-priced staff and consultants, Virginians want somebody who has lived here, been involved in our political process for some time and paid some dues. We're not New York, where a big-shot can just parachute in and be elected to statewide office.

No, I think Virginians will welcome a replay of the Creigh Deeds – Bob McDonnell contest of four years ago. McDonnell was elected Attorney General by the thinnest of margins, only confirmed in a recount. This time, though, I predict that Creigh Deeds, a real Virginian, will come out on top.

By the way, Virginia does not permit a Governor to succeed him/herself in office. Tim Kaine is ineligible to run for reelection.

Hey CNN...Why is this ticker open and others are closed? You Obama-bots are stuck on name calling and nothing more, much like your candidate. I remember the Hillbillys, and other names you threw at Hillary, I see nothing has changed in your vocabularies. Insulting names is your only forte. Obama is all talk and no action. No record to challenge? He makes great speeches, (with a teleprompter) and not much else. I so wanted to vote for a Democrat this election, I thought we can't lose. Now we are in a tie, when it should have been a given? I may still write Hillary on my ballot, if not, I vote for McCain. I think Obama is in over his head. The Peter Principal, at its highest. "I did not vote for the war in Iraq," isn't going to cut it. Both he and McCain have missed more votes then any Senators. Where is Obamas' record? At least with McCain, we have something to look at. Obama even acknowledged that his speech that came AFTER McCains was generally the same ideas that Obamas advisors panned out. That is why Obama called McCain yesterday morning and added that since the Obamas advisors and McCains plans are so similiar they should make a joint statement to show bi-partisan on the issue.

Left wingesr are such idoits!!!!   September 25th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Ok I know how hard it is for the left of the left to understand what really needs to be done because you are all so busy following your leader blindly!!! Obama does not know what to do so he will ...." HELP IF NEEDED". Those are his exact words, and he wants to be president?????? Really you left wing nuts need to see this for what it is.
He also states that this is a real bad situation and we need to take care of this quickly. Those two statement don't jive!!!!!!!! This is serious, but I'll help if needed??????
Come on you have to admit that that is just ignorant. He is so far removed from this that he doesn't care what happens to us as a country!!!! He wants to keep talking. He wants to vote present. While the stock tanks he wants to be in the debates.
What an idiot and all you blind followers who believe what the media tells you in their one sided info for the Obama group, well shame on you.
Bidin doesn't know his history and Katie couric let it air and never said a word, she is just another left wing idiot. Couldn't even report it right. Hey Katie and Biden pick up a history book and read it, or maybe go back to school... where did you get your education? Disgusting how many blind left wing followers there are!!!!!
Wake up!!!!!
Stop following so blindly and look at both sides.
If there is not a decision made soon about our economic situation we will be in big trouble and ALL Americans will be hurting!!!!!

So the man(Obama) who is sitting back waiting should be ashamed of himself. He had to be called in by the parent (Bush).

Eric M   September 25th, 2008 10:35 am ET

Anyone want to explain why the "fact check" on Biden's statement has no comment section, yet the "fact check" stories on statements by McCain do?

Moreover, why is it that your headline and the statement by Biden both imply that McCain criticized the pursuit of Al Qaeda, yet the comment is "fact checked" as true? McCain criticized the notion of bombing within Pakistan (which is indeed a US ally) against the wishes of their government. To characterize this as McCain being opposed to attacking Al Qaeda in Pakistan under any circumstances is about as misleading as you can get.

Someone want to explain why this is considered "true", yet other "fact checks" regarding the McCain campign have been dubbed "misleading", despite being technically true...as this story is??

Play it fair, CNN, or get it over with and set a precedent by formally endorsing a candidate. I think I speak for most Americans when I say that we'd take less of an issue with bias in the media if networks such as your own, MSNBC, and Fox would acknowledge it.

juliana   September 25th, 2008 10:34 am ET

I think the debate should go on. Just as Obama said a president should be able to multitask . Their eyes should be on all aspects of our economic, foreign and domestic policies. If this Bush administration has done just that ,they would not only be focused on fighting in Iraq but they would have noticed that the fundamentals of our economy was weak and should have taken action before now.
This deliberate effort to act only when the damage has been done tells us that either we do not have a capable leader who can implement actions and policies to prevent a catastrophic event as we now face with our economy or one that does not work for the common good of the people. It would be a mistake for Mccain not to debate at this critical time when American have lost faith and are looking for answers.

Liz in Atlanta   September 25th, 2008 10:33 am ET

WOW! I can't believe McCain doesn't expect us to see right through this little tactical move. He decides to make this huge deal about suspending his campaign and having to cancel the debate tomorrow so that he could replace the VP debate with this one and have the VP debate moved back. This is completely transparent to me as a cheap political move, he doesn't care about the bailout, he thinks the fundamentals of the economy are strong. hahaha

**************don't debate. The McCain camp is trying for some sort of weird triple play in which he can take credit for addressing the economic crisis, appear to be sacrificing his campaign for the good of the nation, and cancel the Vice Presidential debate? Seriously?

Those of you in the media aren't going to let him get away with this nonsense, are you? He obviously thinks you're a collective joke.

The VP DEBATE MUST be held on OCTOBER 2nd!!!! I feel like going down to Washington and protesting. This is absurd. Many people are going to be voting by mail soon, and time is too sensitive for delay.

I am disgusted. If the Presidential debate this Friday *must* be rescheduled (rolling eyes), DON'T RESCHEDULE IT SO THAT THE VP DEBATE MUST BE DELAYED AS WELL!!!!

Man, this has to be the most exploitive scheme to run from a debate that I've ever seen. Obviously, McCain is totally intimidated by the prospect of a debate with Obama. At the same time, he's proposing to push back the VP debate. He doesn't want Palin caught with her teleprompter turned off and needs more time to have her memorize her "lines".

It took the Republicans 8 years to get us into this unprecedented financial crisis. What good does McCain imagine he can do with a few extra hours bought by skipping a debate? Good grief, it was he and his GOP cronies who got us here....

CNN, let us comment on the "Great Debate Escape"! McCain's plan was a gimmick to postpone Palin's debate! She is not ready (ala Couric's interview) and is feverishly cramming away as I type. Bush will probably try to make both candidates stay in Washington because he is on McCain's side and wants to help his pathetic campaign. And shame on Bill Clinton for the McPalin lovin'. POST MY COMMENT CNN – FREEDOM OF SPEECH REMEMBER?????

The Clintons, so bitter after losing the election they were entitled to win, are now setting up for their next run at the presidency.

What they still haven't realized is, like it or not, the country is moving on without them. Until they acknowledge this by showing REAL support of Barack Obama, they are always going to appear as the politicians of the past.

We see right through this Clintons and company. Do you really think you are fooling us? I mean, we beat you in the primaries because we saw through you then – did you think that was going to change?

THERE IS GOING TO BE NO CLINTON IN THE WHITEHOUSE EVER AGAIN – GET USE TO IT!

We are DONE with president dynasties. It's bad for democracy!

Jon   September 25th, 2008 10:15 am ET

I think it's great that both of these candidates are going to Washington to do the job that they're GETTING PAID FOR! What normal job here in America would actually pay you to work on getting a better job??? I think that real change would be for either of these clowns to forego their Senatorial wages, especially when the campaign pays for all their daily expenses, when they are not present to deliberate or vote on issues which are affecting this country.

Isn't Terry the one who screwed up Hillary's campaign? Virginia better really think twice before voting for htis guy. On another note, nice try Repubs to cancel the debates. Both of you, McCain and Palin are going to get crushed and you know it, so why not use something that neither of you cared about last week, to use as an excuse to cancel the debate. You are so transparent and predictable.

McCain,

I guess you have just proved to the American people that Sarah Palin is not ready to step in for you when/if the time comes. What would happen if you were elected and were not available to speak to the American public. What would Sarah do? Would she run and hide to?

If you can't take the pressure and Sarah is not ready to step in for you than why should the people vote for you?

Jimmy   September 25th, 2008 10:13 am ET

As a lifelong Virginian and Democrat I am absolutely apalled at the idea of Terry McAuliffe trying to become Governor of the Commonwealth. We have Democratic candidates in Virginia that are more than qualified to take the oath of office to the oldest and most prestigious executive office in America. Does the term "carpetbagging" mean anything to you Terry?

I think the debate should go on. Americans wants to hear and know about the candidates know and how they are going to help us out in this mess. America is seriously sick
President Bush bail out plan will lead to more economic woes.
There should congressional hearing regarding how this economy went down. His cabinet members all needs to tell us what happened. He sent billions of dollar to fight the unneccessary war on Iraq. In the month of July, his remarks were that the fundamentals of the the economy is strong which was also echoed by Senator John McCain.

What changed, what is the big emergency now for all the candidates to suspend their campaigning to rally around George Bush's failure.
Then again this is a distractor to save the original maverick from being squashed. The debate must go on!!!! Americans wants to listen to Barack Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tired of W, OH   September 25th, 2008 10:10 am ET

CNN, are you going to run the story about Kenyan Bishop Thomas Muthee praying over Palin to protect her from witches? I saw the video and it's scary to think that this woman may be Prez. The Bishop is totally nuts. He is known for literally running suspected witches out of town in Kenya. I saw the video of the Palin prayer. Pretty scary stuff. The Bishop was praying (actually chanting, like some cult worship) and Palin was totally into it.

If the media can run with a story about Rev. Wright for months, Palin's voodoo Bishop is fair game. How many average hockey moms have attended ceremonies to protect them from witches?

Wise White Guy   September 25th, 2008 10:09 am ET

What can i say about Terry. The guy is energetic and as positive as they come. Problem is that we saw how that positive attitude can, at times, be absurd. Much like most of the primary campaign when the math was a no brainer and he kept insisting that his candidate was going to win. Everyone with a brain knew he was completely wrong but he kept directing the troops to trust him. He can get people to follow him but he can't seem to see where he is leading them to. All in all i think he would probably do a great service in a position like this but i have to think that by not speaking the truth during the primary it could not have helped.

Frank from Peterborough   September 25th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Yes, like most on here, you wonder what strong arming and persuading is going to be done with Bush, McCain and Obama meet today. This is an obvious ploy to give Sarah Palin more time to brush up on issues for the VP debate. The mere fact the Lindsay Graham has come out proposing this on behalf of the McCain campaign tells you it is a dishonest tactic! If she IS SO READY, why not let her debate Joe Biden tomorrow evening? SHE IS NOT READY, we know, why doesn't the McCain campaign, the republicans and ALL THEIR SUPPORTERS admit it?

To independent for Obama

Are you serious, you want to know why Bush requested a meeting with the Both of them, here is a clue they are both candidates for President. Do you think he could have had just a meeting with McCain to discuss the issues and not been blasted for excluding Obama or met only with Obama and been not blasted for excluding McCain. Since this is obviously an issue that will be ongoing after the election the fact that Bush wanted to brief both of them and get their input seems to be an appropriate action. Get a grip on reality just a little.

He is too quick trigger and forgets too often and I succintly remember while talking on 60 minutes he said "...I don't care what the American people want, I will do things my way..." that is dangerous people and not someone I want running my country. i think his delay in the debates is largely due to palin not being ready but also him.

When asked what accomplishments McCain had made, she didn't know and said she would have to find a list of them to get back to Katie on. Palin is a disgrace as the nominee as VP and McCain's judgement in appointing her in the position shows his lack of knowledge and that he was only concerned about one thing and one thing only, winning the Presidency and what would happend to the American people after that was of no concern to him.

When this election is over folks are going to hold your network accountable for its blind 9/11 like coverage......

DebM, Allentown, PA   September 25th, 2008 9:50 am ET

Okay, I know this isn't related to the topic at hand, but did you see where Palin may suspend her campaign as well? Three questions:

1) What campaign?
2) What will be different about it once it's suspended? She gives the same speech over and over again and doesn't answer questions by the press. What's the big difference between her ongoing campaign and a suspension of said campaign?
3) What's she going to do to help resolve the issue of the economy? For that matter, what's McCain going to do, especially since it's almost a done deal? Absolutely NOTHING. This was a pathetic ploy

In fact, their entire campaign is PATHETIC.

Rudy NYC   September 25th, 2008 9:50 am ET

Hmm. Somebody is not running for re-election? Wonder who that might be, and what they plan to do instead of re-running for governor. I wish Mr. McCauliffe success in his challenge.

Doesn't mean I would vote for him, though. During the primaries he struck me as typical of what is currently wrong in government.

Why is there no option to comment on the VP debate thing. This is getting silly. Obama has laid out his principles that this bill should have. McCain refused to sign off on it in their joint statement. I think this is going to go very badly for McCain. I was a McCain supporter but I am sick of all these games he is playing. Now, trying push back the Palin-Biden debate for obvious reasons. Stop playing games...you aren't that important. You need that debate a month out, not a couple days before the election. They are playing games. What will either of them do? I bet they won't vote the same on the bill because that is the whole strategy behind this. They need to find another thing to be on the other side of Obama on.

These people like McAuliffe need to be removed from politics: they are much too partisan, and cannot act for the good of all constituents. Terry McCaulliffe was a lying, conieving weasel during the Democratic Presidential primary. He was bombastic and rude. He bent and twisted the truth and played on the worst in people.

He sowed some seeds that will come back to haunt him, I suspect.

These people like McAuliffe need to be removed from politics: they are much too partisan, and cannot act for the good of all constituents. What Amnerican needs is more men like John McCain who puts the country above the party. No Obama - pure partisan - voted with his party 100% of the time, even though the ideals were wrong.

independent for Obama   September 25th, 2008 9:41 am ET

Well, this is fine and dandy, BUT, I want to know WHY when Bush called McCain and Obama back to Washington, he requested a meeting this afternoon with both of them, thats 2 republicans against one democrat ! More fear tactics, no doubt..telling Obama that he has to suspend the debates, convince congress and senate to give them their "blackmail" money so they can go out of office even richer !!! I hope Obama does not scare and tells the public exactly what was said and how he is being "Bushwhacked"!!!!!
Now, this would BE news !
I am already BROKE, so as the saying goes, "you cant get blood out of a turnip", neither can you get any more money from someone who has none left !!!!!!

Yes. Terry is sweet. A little looney, but a good guy.

No how, no way no McAuliffe!

People make no sense   September 25th, 2008 9:40 am ET

why didn't McCain postpone his meeting this morning if it was so important?

Why didn't he suggest that the v.p.'s take the spot to allow the American people to hear their views?

What a joke! No wonder when the 911 attacks happened Bush just sat there. The republicans can't think on their feet. Katrina happened – nothing from our leaders.

Americans' are soo stupid!
