McCain will attend Friday's debate.

WASHINGTON (CNN ) - Republican presidential nominee John McCain has decided to travel to Mississippi to participate in Friday night's presidential debate with his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, McCain campaign staff said.

McCain said earlier this week he would not attend the debate if an agreement had not been reached on a $700 billion bailout plan for Wall Street.

Election Center: What to expect from upcoming debates

The campaign said the Republican presidential nominee believed that enough progress had been made for him to travel to Mississippi to participate in the debate, set for 9 p.m. ET at the University of Mississippi campus.

AHH, Is that his final answer??- Republican in PA voting for Obama

Ed from Dallas   September 26th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Well, McCrazy gambled on the Americans falling for his stupidity. He thought we would all rally behind him and proclaim how he is country first and Obama is not.

Problem with McCrazy is that he is in a time warp. This is not 2004. The press is not in his pocket like it was for Bush. And Obama is no John Kerry. He is way too smart for the whole GOP. He basically told McCrazy that if he cannot multi task, he has no business being POTUS.

Now, let us see what his next stunt is. May be he will bring with him an ear piece like Bush did to cheat on the debate and claim he is following the proceedings in Congress.

independent analysis   September 26th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Obama = lets talk /debate the economic problems. Go Missisipi.

McCain= lets solve the economic problems. Go Washington.

Matt   September 26th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Very interesting to watch this all unfold. I am a first time follower of politics. Like many, I think I am very taken back by the childish behavior of the Republican Party to manipulate things in order to come off looking good. Its amazing to me that grown men and women are behaving this way.

Robertpetry   September 26th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Wow. I sure hope the quality of the CNN posters is not representative of the quality of the CNN readers/watchers. MSNBC here we come. What a pathetic bunch.

Your opinions are so so harsh and blind. I hope you realize you represent about 5% of the population and 0% of the helpful, rational citizens.

katiec   September 26th, 2008 11:44 am ET

He had no choice. For him to be a no show at the debate
would have dug his grave.
Course, think he has already done that with his
irresponsible actions this last week.

Motown T   September 26th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Just like him to make a rash decision, then have to rethink it.
He couldn't make a decent decision if his life depended on it!
Unless it was to buy another house or car...

Yes. My work is done here in Worshington. I screwed things up real good. Off to Mississippi!

rena   September 26th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Wow, is there a conclusion to the bailout. This is only proof that this man is NOT ready to be President. He doesn't think first. He makes rash descision and then as to change those descsions -which just makes him look foolish!

Same thing with the bailout- First he was against it, (rash descision) then for it, then against it,.,.. now no one knows where he stand.

Same thing with the war... for it (rash descision)

Same thing with picking Palin- EXTREMELY RASH DESCSION- DID HE WATCH THE INTERVIEW WITH KATIE... RASH DESCSION.. RASH DESCISION... RASH DESCISION...

Let's face it... neither he nor Palin are ready to go anywhere near the White House.

Rachel   September 26th, 2008 11:44 am ET

I think most of the posts are pretty nasty towards McCain. To be frank, I don't see there is any big difference between McCain and Obama. Both of them play dirty politics (just watch the ads from both sides). I am really disappointed in the politicians. Don't we deserve better or we have to choose the less evil one!!!

Mike Sk   September 26th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Cave IN!!! Bye Bye McSame!

James   September 26th, 2008 11:44 am ET

He's very desperate. He clearly said he would only participate in the debate if there was a deal in the bail out plan. As many people have been arguing, it was just a political stunt aimed at changing the current debate. McShame put politics before the nation. He's losing this election whether he likes it or not.

J   September 26th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Great!!! Now I just have to take something so that I can stay awake when McCain speaks.

Mike in Fairfax   September 26th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Jack,

You obviously have access to the internet. Rather than spout drivel, why not do some research? You should start with the "Community Reinvestment Act', then move on to the "Federal Housing Enterprise Reform Act" of 2005. When you are done there, go see what the reduction in the corporate tax rates has done for Ireland and it's citizens. After that, come back and tell us all what you found out. Show a little independence and base your vote on some facts rather than blindly rooting for your favorite team. This is our country, not a penant race.

Pam   September 26th, 2008 11:44 am ET

you dimwits! Is this all you really care about? A stupid debate that will not change any of your minds on anything? Why even have a vote on Nov 4? You already have Obama in the White House based on POLLS! Stop already with the HATE!

GP   September 26th, 2008 11:43 am ET

So who's trying to act like the messiah now? Give us a break. McCain has tried to make this crisis of the people "all about me, me, me, look at me!!!" Obama's been in Washington all this time, too, but he hasn't been trying to hog the spotlight or keep the country hostage with these dramatic shenanigans. Thank God someone is consistent and dependable–if Obama says he'll show up, he'll show up.

sandy   September 26th, 2008 11:43 am ET

I am glad he is going, but he will have the opportunity to state he was not keen on leaving Washington, but felt he had no other choice. What ever he will find someway to turn this to his advantage. I hope the American's eyes are not as blind as McCain thinks they are.

We are happy to note that John McCain will take part in the debate. The whole world is watching daily with interest. I am happy he will not disappoint the Americans and the rest of the progressive world. Bitterness should be removed from the campaigns. What the world wants is purposeful leadership which will strenghten American and the world economy. Bipartisanship being promoted by the two candidates gives a ray of hope for peace and prosperity in the US and the world. God will protect both candidates.

Sharon   September 26th, 2008 11:43 am ET

His grandstanding didn't work, he messed up the deal yesterday so he has no choice but to try to redeem himself by showing up. I'm sure he'll say he's "not as focused" due to the problems in Washington but he'd find some excuse one way or another. Both he and Palin usually do. After all, they wouldn't want us to have "high" expectations, would they?!

Gina   September 26th, 2008 11:43 am ET

McCain should have never cancelled in the first place. He has no idea about what's going on with the economy, and he knows that. That's why he punked out and ran to Washington. Economic problems have been going on all year, so why go to Washington now to "rescue us and save the day"? Bunch of crap. It seems like the economy going bad is news to McCain.

My question is, if we can potentially cancel political events and suspend campaigns, why didn't we do this during the Republican Convention when the hurricane was going on? We still had a convention, yet people were suffering in a different way, potentially losing everything they own, but he didn't try and suspend the campaign then. He's full of it...

Sammy   September 26th, 2008 11:43 am ET

Thank goodness. I thought I would be subjected to "um..um..um.." for 90 minutes since Obama knows nothing about national security. A town hall without a teleprompter would have been just boring.

Calling It Like It Is   September 26th, 2008 11:43 am ET

Great.

I'm SO GLAD that we have a completed bailout bill. After all, Senator McCain said he wouldn't be at the debate until we had a bill signed off with all the details completed.

The tough POW, war hero who understands how to "get things done" is weak, prone to miscalculation, reckless and niave. He has ZERO credibility as a thoughtful leader.

I only hope that America does not let any watered down expectations of his performance tonight lower the bar for him.

Let's look for objective evidence of competence tonight from both candidates. We're not electing a President on a curve.

Marion S. McIntosh   September 26th, 2008 11:43 am ET

It's quite simple. When McCain's Camp found out that Obama would have a Town Hall Meeting to himself with most of the nation watching, he decided he would attend. Go figure. Obama '08!

carlo   September 26th, 2008 11:43 am ET

So much for country first! This was a ploy by McCain, who is playing high stakes poker with the future of America, first by selecting that dimwit Palin to be his VP, then my handling the economic crisis like someone with Tourret's. I would love to meet the 40% of Americans who would actually trust this highly unstable man to run this country.

Michael is right, this is no doubt, on one level, political grandstanding. On another level it is additional evidence of an impulsive, reckless temperament that is ill-suited to the responsibilities of the presidency.

ELC- North Carolina   September 26th, 2008 11:43 am ET

I am just amazed at some of our opinions. As I drive through surrounding neighborhoods in my area, I see people who are obviously living in despair with McCain and Palin signs in their yard.

This is election should not be about who we admire, respect, or want to have a beer with, this election needs to be about who can handle the the transitions with our world, inspire the nation, remain calm and level headed in a crisis, and educated to express a sound judgement.

I am not saying who we should vote for, just ask yourselves the above questions and make your decision.

me   September 26th, 2008 11:43 am ET

Whopie do!

Is this news to anyone? McCain played russian roulette with an AK, in the process made himself look really ineffective.

People are saying he might get killed in the debate tonight... and this one is about foreign policy; His (alleged) speciality.

When will we learn that these issues are not segregated in the real world the way we like to label them in politics? Our economy is only as strong as our foreign policy is wise. One cannot succeed without the other.

Say what you want to say. McCain is Bush 44. Its not just a talking point, its sad reality.

Voice   September 26th, 2008 11:43 am ET

Tell me again what the purpose of his bolt to Washington was about? I'm confused. If congress is still in session and hasn't reached a conclusion, why didn't he stick to his original statement of the debate and my campaign will not go on until this is resolved. It's not resolved, yet he's appearing at the debates.

He's seems to be flapping in the wind. He looks tired, overwhelmed and this stress may very well be a cause for illness (although I don't wish it upon anybody!!!) Nonetheless, it makes me more concerned about "I'll get back to ya..." Palin in the oval office. Ok, she doesn't know the record of other politicians, but her own running mate?????

Imagine that! With all the drama going on he decided that it was in America's best interest to go on with the debates.
With this move he has put "Country First."
There is always webcam to follow what is going on in Washington on the floor and in the meetings, if need be.

No real surprise here – I'm glad Obama didn't take the grandstand bait originally... and once I saw he didnt, I knew McCain wouldn't let Obama show up in Mississippi alone to have the alternative town hall style "sit-down-with-Barack-Obama Friday Night Special".... I'm looking forward to the debate... should be interesting.

SD   September 26th, 2008 11:41 am ET

Well isn't that special. Just another grandstand that flopped, just like his sagging campaign. I was really pissed at his arrogance, "I am directing Sen. Obama to suspend his campaign too", get a life dude. You aren't directing anybody in a positive direction. You are directing: the press not to speak to you or Palin, lawyers to intercede in a investigation about abuse of power and the fight against regulation of Wallstreet (which is what got us in this mess in the first place). Pathetic is the only word I can come up with, pathetic.

Did you think he would not show?

joe mett   September 26th, 2008 11:41 am ET

America be warned!

John McCain's erratic behavior is due to his health situation. At 72 years old, McCain takes medication for blood pressure, high cholestrol, vertigo, arthritis etc. McCain's health situation is relevant in the campaign for the White House.

Anybody who takes medication for blood pressure, high cholestrol, vertigo etc. is naturally a victim of erratic mood swings. Let the voters know! and then decide whether such a person is healthy enough to go to the White House as president!

Larry   September 26th, 2008 11:41 am ET

Good! I'm glad they were able to get Mr. Polly Prissypants to quit sulking and come out of his room. Oxford put up a lot of money for this debate, and McWorse was ready to stiff them one of the poorest states with a $5.5 million dollar loss, plus rob them of their moment in the sun. Does anybody really think he'd have pulled this stunt if the debate was in, say, Ohio or Pennsylvania? He's taking the people of Mississippi for granted, and they should feel pretty insulted for that. At least Obama understood the situation and was ready to follow through on his commitments... the way a REAL leader does. You can't trust McCain's word for anything. He's turning his campaign into a circus, and he doesn't deserve to be president of this great country.

Ashley, OH   September 26th, 2008 11:41 am ET

So first he flies to Washington to try and save his campaign and now that it didn't work and he has been shown to be more trouble than help, he is going to attend the debate to try and save his campaign. What political stunt will he pull tomorrow?

Thank you Obama for keeping course and not giving me a headache by running all over the country.

Joe   September 26th, 2008 11:41 am ET

Flip-flop, flip-flop, flip-flop. I thought he said he was suspending his campaign. I thought he said no deal; no debate, Can we trust anything McCain says? God help us all if McCain/Palin wins this thing.

H Jay From NYC   September 26th, 2008 11:40 am ET

I just hope that the American people will see this latest stunt for what it is. McCain doesn't understand the economy so what did he have to offer?

With his poll numbers going down once again he tries to create a distraction and get people paying attention to the smoke screen while He hasn't contributed anything but chaos.

Michael   September 26th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Ha! Too funny. On Wednesday he suspended his campaign to "focus on the economy" in some nebulous, unclear way. He spent yesterday posturing and saying that he wouldn't attend the debate if a bail-out deal wasn't in place. And now, lo and behold, he flip-flops again and decides to show up after all.

Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly glad that the debate will be going ahead - the time could not be any more ripe for Americans to see these two lock horns, with the future of the United States (and, in some respects, the world) on the line in less than six weeks.

What it does demonstrate conclusively is that McCain realized that his ploy wasn't working, and that Americans weren't buying it. If he were truly guided by "Country First" and the strength of his convictions, he would have stayed his course. What a hypocrite.

You know...when does McCain do what he always does...which is copy Obama's stand on things and try to steal his lines?

Good to see your stunt didn't work out so well McCain.

Now let's just hope Obama can stick it to him.

Ren   September 26th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Oh. My. God. Did anyone read the statement that he sent out saying that he will appear? Will the douchebaggery never end with this guy?

"Both parties in both houses of Congress and the administration needed to come together to find a solution that would deserve the trust of the American people. And while there were attempts to do that, much of yesterday was spent fighting over who would get the credit for a deal and who would get the blame for failure. There was no deal or offer yesterday that had a majority of support in Congress. There was no deal yesterday that included adequate protections for the taxpayers. It is not enough to cut deals behind closed doors and then try to force it on the rest of Congress — especially when it amounts to thousands of dollars for every American family.

The difference between Barack Obama and John McCain was apparent during the White House meeting yesterday, where Barack Obama’s priority was political posturing in his opening monologue defending the package as it stands. John McCain listened to all sides so he could help focus the debate on finding a bipartisan resolution that is in the interest of taxpayers and homeowners. The Democratic interests stood together in opposition to an agreement that would accommodate additional taxpayer protections."

Nimesh Patel, Antioch, Ca   September 26th, 2008 11:40 am ET

I thought he was NOT GOING TO ATTENT UNTIL a deal was made. When I look forward to watching him take the podium wearing "FLIP FLOPS"..........

OBAMA FOR NO DRAMA!

Jimenez   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

How comical of Obama pressuring McCain. When Obama always tried to get out of debates with Clinton. I knew McCain would show up to the debate. He's a fighter – he has always been a fighter. That is what our country needs. Not a glorified media hogger like Obama

gc   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

Mccain grasping at the last straws and running like a headless chicken. The republicans must have sent him back because he was a distraction from real work.

Jon S.   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

As if his handlers were ever going to let Obama have the stage to himself.

But it won't make much difference. The damage has already been done – his posturing was a failure, so now he'll have to explain exactly what was so important, that McCain felt he "needed" to be involved in the financial crisis proceedings. It's not like he's been in Washington lately for any other issues.

Anonymous   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

What's the point of holding debates if all mccain does is dodge hard questions and uses Ad Hominem arguements instead of debating about Issues?

John McChicken   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

It's okay, McChicken. Just picture the audience in their underwear, and you'll do just fine. Go easy on the makeup, though.

Angel09   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

Good to hear it...he should.

After all, since the public is financing his campaign, we're PAYING for him to debate.

Aaron from Battleground Ohio   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

seth   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

WHAT A JOKE. McCain is making such a mockery out of this election and himself.

He said he would not go to the debate unless a deal was reached because it was super-double-important to America. We were in such a crisis that he "fake" suspended his campaign.

Now he hears the Barack would get a "town hall" tonight and decides that even though there isn't a deal on the bailout, he is going to the debate.

LOSER.

John B. From New Hampshire   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

so he flips on his "promise" there has been no resolution, but he knows his chances will die if he does not attend and obama does. WTG McCain... Backfire!!!

DebM, Allentown, PA   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

Oh yes, it's McCain's eyelids blinking furiously.

HAHAHAH Thanx for goin to capitol hill and solving financial crisis!!!!!!!!!! NOW WELCOME TO REALITY

Don't Be Stupid   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

I knew he would. He's not stupid. However, this will look very bad if Congress doesn't come to a resolution on this "bailout" plan. Then, once again, McCain will be a flip-flopping liar.

Beverly, NYC   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

How nice of him to attend. Mccain reminds me of the nice old guy who is kind of the neighborhood "mayor" , while you like him you don't want him running your country. It's a shame that Senators don't have term limits. Can someone in AZ explains why you keep electing him, has it just become a habit?

phil   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

i dont understand this. mccain said getting this deal done is his top priority and he has suspended his campaign. and as of now we all know the bailout deal isnt done yet.he hasnt participated in the negotiations yet and all of a sudden the debate is on again.
this guy is mentally unstable lol!!!

Tom - Cary, NC   September 26th, 2008 11:39 am ET

Thank goodness. I am really looking forward to this debate. I can not wait until the VP debate. Then we will see if Not Hillary can think on her own.

Arrogant   September 26th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Well yippee!! This debate has been planned for over a year. Mississippi has spent over a million dollars preparing for it. The American people want to hear what each presidential candidate intends to do about this crisis. John McCain announces this week that he may or may not attend the debate. Who does he think he is? Open your eyes people. Senator Obama is not the one witht the arrogance problem.

Ever since Karl Rove's disciples have taken over McCain's campaign, it has been about lies and manipulation. The only problem is that lying to an entire nation of people during the you tube age is almost impossible because someone out their knows the truth. We thought the "Bridge to Nowhere" and the "Earmarks" was bad. Watch and wait people!

kathy   September 26th, 2008 11:38 am ET

I wonder if Palin will have her steno pad and take notes. Her agenda for to-day includes a "debate party".....i wonder if the press will be allowed to ask questions while they are snapping photos?

CD   September 26th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Thank you REID for saying Congress will not break session till a deal is made so McCain will have no choice but to attend the debate. The idea was if congress was to go on recess from today then McCain had a good excuse to escape the debate tonight. McCain get your butt back to the debate.

Jim Hofbauer   September 26th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Too bad. I was hoping that Obama would have a town house meeting and have the attention of 80 million people without McCain. McCains ratings will slide downhill at a fast pace now after what he has pulled the last couple of days.........What an idiot

All Obama wants is to be in the limelight. He is being paid to be a Senator, God forbid he does his job. John McCain will chew him up and spit him out tonight...

Donkey Party   September 26th, 2008 11:38 am ET

So the cowardly politcal grand-stander sees it is now in his best interest to show up? I think the damge is done. Just ask anyone from Mississippi, even ardent McCain supporters how they feel about their awful candidate and joke of a VP selection. They too see him for what he is, a POW and a POS.

RM   September 26th, 2008 11:38 am ET

His actions the last couple days were illusions. All bravado, no substance. He did nothing. He took a stance and backed down. He never saved the deal, he never produced a better deal, he never saved time. He created chaos.

Lets talk about Davis and Palin now! Hold McCain accountable. No more distractions. No more smoke screens.

McCain is Shameless   September 26th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Of course he will. His political stunt FAILED. Not only did he look like an idiot, but he went in there and messed everything up. Completely inept campaign, an entirely moronic leader. Really, how can anyone fall for this guy's act? This sort of behavior is shameful.

Rob   September 26th, 2008 11:38 am ET

FLIP FLOP, FLIP FLOP! He knew it would have been political suicide not to show up. He and Palin already damaged his campaign beyond repair this week. Obama Biden!!! :)

Rob in VA   September 26th, 2008 11:38 am ET

I really feel that this was a stunt to try steal the thunder of Obama over the last couple weeks. I feel that this stunt will ultimately hurt Sen. McCain in his bid for the Presidency. I actually like McCain personally. but, this will go down in history as when McCain lost the campaign.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08/12 .

Big D   September 26th, 2008 11:38 am ET

OK – so what ploy or gimmick will McCain play next?
His latest grandstand 'suspend' ploy got everyone distracted from his recent bad news: Davis's lobbyist money and his lies about it, Palin's horrible interview performaces, dropping poll numbers, bad press about his lie-filled ads, not having any actual plans or proposals etc...
So he got all the attention on his swoop-into-Washington to save the economic crisis narrative (which was distorted and false as usual).
So now that the debate is back on – what political stunt will he pull next to keep everyone distracted from all the bad-news stories?

Susan   September 26th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Oops, another Flip Flop by McCain. I don't see that there is any kind of deal yet, but he said he was not goin to debate until a deal was done! McCain not only flip flops, but on this one he belly flopped. I will be watching tonight for the left eye tick and the rolling eyes! God, he is the least honorable person I have ever seen in my 54 years!

joycelyn   September 26th, 2008 11:37 am ET

This is not news, we all knew this was a trick. He realizes that the so called debate would have turned into a town hall meeting without his presense for Obama. He sees how damaging this would be and deciedes to participate. Shame on you McPalin.

Amanda   September 26th, 2008 11:37 am ET

You had to see this coming. He can't afford Barack to have a very televised town hall meeting with the country. I think he played chicken with his opponent and was on the losing end. Barack called his bluff. Can't wait to see what happens tonight.

Felipe Kiocho   September 26th, 2008 11:37 am ET

It's good Senator Macain decided to go for the face although I think he is also right in going to DC for the meeting, because his opponent is panicking if the debate is postpone he might forget his breifing he got in his preparation that' the reason he doesen't want to postpone it.
C'mon John knock BHO in the debate so that his arrogance will supside.

Donna   September 26th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Good for John.
Good luck tonight

Voice   September 26th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Are we supposed to be overjoyed???? This was obviously a stunt to reinforce his image of a Maverick/Country First candidate.

No he's got a platform to take at the debate. I could just hear him now, 'where were you when the economy was collapsing Senator Obama". He needed some fresh talking points and now he's got what he perceives as his leverage.

Transparency? Yes, you are very transparent! And as for your running mate, she looks like a moose in headlights.

Nervous in Texas   September 26th, 2008 11:36 am ET

His next grandstanding trick will be to kick Palin off the ticket and divert the headlines to that. And then if that does not work he's going to fake an illness, so that should take the headlines for a couple more days. Will that take him to Nov 4th without having to deal with the true issues? Well actually I think they want to tank this election so the Republicans can sit back and point fingers at the Dem. BC really McCain is not the poster child for the Republicans, he's just their scape goat, and Rovean GOP is taking down the good name that McCain had built for himself. Wow, can't believe he suffered as a POW and now is the puppet of Rove. That Rove guy is really scrupolous. Sorry that you were made the scape goat McCain/Palin.

I can't wait!

Debate should go on   September 26th, 2008 11:36 am ET

He never intended on not attending. This was yet another political stunt to try and halt the Obama momentum. That has been McCain's tactics this who time. When ever Obama gains momentum, McCain makes some big announcement.

Patricia Shoop   September 26th, 2008 11:36 am ET

I'll bet anything that he will show up-his little showoff activity yesterday has finally caught up with him. What a stunt...this man will do anything to win this election. Does he not realize that Americans are not totally dumb. His actions call into suspect just what kind of a man he really is. There is no level, in my opinion, that he would not stoop too in order to win. I think he is truly pitiful.......

Mark Wagner   September 26th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Well, isn't that nice of him. Unfortunately, this already looks like a political stunt and has made this American hero look like a coward.

Whatever respect I had left for McCain has been completely thrown out the window due to this weeks events.

Amy in Woodstock, NY   September 26th, 2008 11:35 am ET

What a total "Drama Queen" that McCain is. This bit of political theatre was so pathetic.

Disgusted   September 26th, 2008 11:35 am ET

He has no choice but to attend. I just want to know what exactly did he do in DC that was so important that he had to "suspend" campaigning and potentially delay the debate.

Jack   September 26th, 2008 11:35 am ET

FLIP FLOP FLIP FLOP – What else John? You suspend your campaign and fly off to DC to muddle the solution.

Are you un-suspending the campaign because the polls show that your gamble didn't work?

Let's hear tonight exactly what John McCain did with his rush to DC?

John McCain has been the problem with his deregulation not any part of a solution to the GOP caused economic mess.

Rodger   September 26th, 2008 11:35 am ET

He didn't have a choice...now that he screwed up the bail-out deal!!!

Big news!!!   September 26th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Yeah big news. How damaging to his campaign if he had not. The bailout still isn't finished what changed his mind, the fact that it was a political play and the American people recognized it or at least the smart Americans.

Phil, CA   September 26th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Does this mean the bailout deal is done? If not, just shows McCain as the flip-flopper he is.

Melanie   September 26th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Good!!! He tried to pressure Obama into suspending his campain, and postponing the debates....but, the joke is on him!!!Now, he is the one that caved under the pressure. I'm so glad that Obama didn't give in to this lunatic.

He's a gambler who lost   September 26th, 2008 11:35 am ET

McCain changes his mind, because his gamble didn't pay off. No one will give him credit for staying in Washington to save the bail-out deal . . . because he did go to Washington and the deal failed anyway. Now he faces the reality that if he skips the debate he'll look chicken. So he's making the best of a bad sitution by switching positions and attending the debate after having behaved like a doofus.

Shelley florida   September 26th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Of course
We all knew that in the end that this was what going to happen once McCain's grand standing was over.

Michael, watching from Canada   September 26th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Why didn't McCain suspend his campaign on the day Bush first announced that the economy was in dire straits (the day the bail-out was first announced)? Why did McCain wait until two days before the debate to suspend his campaign?

1. Obama approached him to join together to show their support to get the financial crisis resolved. But this olive branch by Obama would undermine McCain's stance that Obama does not reach across the aisle. So by suspending his campaign, he upstaged Obama.

2. To change momentum of the polls. McCain has publicly admitted that he is not good in economics. The American public's growing concern on the economy is hurting McCain.

3. To showcase his Maverick approach. Even though leaders in the Banking Committee asked McCain not to come to Washington to interfere in ongoing delicate negotiations on financial matters in which McCain has no expertise, McCain joined in anyways.

Why is it that the world sees this for what it is, but America cannot.......

pure political grandstanding!!

Mike   September 26th, 2008 11:34 am ET

haa!

tuff Col. Oh   September 26th, 2008 11:34 am ET

it would have been suicidal to his campaign if he didn't show up, i'm sure karl rove told him to take his tired butt to the debate, we know who's really head of the rnc and it's nor john mccain

Geoff Barnes   September 26th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Wow, he's a true American hero. Does this mean he fixed the economy?

art   September 26th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Brandi   September 26th, 2008 11:34 am ET

This whole 'suspension' of his campaign is a joke. McCain is a loose cannon in a time of crisis.

Michael   September 26th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Thank you...now lets get ready to see this battle go on!

PW Va   September 26th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Guess his well-laid ruse of helping out during the bailout discussion didn't pan out.

April in Texas   September 26th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Geez isnt that nice of him.. Although per what he was saying yesterday that he would go if there was a deal.. Boy he is wishy washy and flip flopping as usual. I shouldn't be surprised as all I have to do is wait 24 to 48 hours and his positions change again.

Arkay, MI   September 26th, 2008 11:34 am ET

What happened to 'No bailout deal no debate'??

McCain THE LIAR   September 26th, 2008 11:34 am ET

LIAR – I won't attend the debate until a resolution to the bailout
LIAR – I'm on my way to the airport after cancelling with Letterman
LIAR – I'm suspending my campaign
LIAR – I initiated the call with Obama
LIAR – Palin is qualified

ted   September 26th, 2008 11:33 am ET

WHY ?? Still there is No-Deal ..

Prob McSame thinks he is playing the game show (Deal or No Deal) and thats why he choose Sarah-Palin to hold the Briefcase ...LOL

Change_Obama   September 26th, 2008 11:33 am ET

of course he will! he is going to come to the debate and talk about him being a maverick! and the american people will be all gaga over him...whatever has happened to his I am going to suspend the campaign and not participate in the debate if bail out plan doesnt work!

Dutch-VA   September 26th, 2008 11:32 am ET

He better! Not attending will be political suicide since all of America knows he was pulling a poltical stunt in the first place. He's not fooling anyone.
