(CNN) – This is a new kind of debate — an attempt at a real back and forth. Moderator Jim Lehrer is trying to get these candidates to talk to each other, but they don't have the hang of it yet; they level their charges at each other, but they're looking at Lehrer or the television cameras.

McCain kicked the youngster's butt. What do you expect when you let the press nominate a good speaking yet hollow candidate.

I thought John McCain won this debate hands down. Firstly Obama did not even acknowledge his mento Senator Kennedy being back in the hospital, then he stammered and kept interrupting John McCain during McCain's time while McCain let Obama have his time. You could also tell when McCain scored points on Obama because Obama sneered whenever a point was scored or interrupted the speaker showing his immaturity. McCain was very strong on the economy, normally Obama's stronghold but tonight he looked lost and confused and stuttering to find and answer. McCain was prepared and confident and strong unlike Obama.

Obama is absolutely right about the likelihood of another attack .

WAKE UP AMERICA! If you think our WAR on TERRORISM is still in IRAC, you're sadly misstaken. McCain is no where near ready for the Presidentcy!!!!!! Common scence has to come into play at some time, our county is in trouble and I'm not putting it in the hands of Senator McCain!!!!!!!!!

Mccain's tie is more appealing than his answers

lori   September 26th, 2008 9:57 pm ET

I want to know one thing….why can't McCain even look at Obama when he's speaking…….

Nate   September 26th, 2008 9:54 pm ET

McCain always looks stiff and angry, and uh, old (I'm sorry). Not very appealing.

dana   September 26th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

If you would look at past pictures of Mccain and Obama together Mccain will not look at him, how can Mccain run our country if he cant even look someone eye to eye…..

They also need to talk about education. In Douglas County GA. Educators and Administrators have worked hard to secures grants to enhance the education system for 3 year blocks. The first year was funded. The other two years our school system was given IOU's by the feds headed by our beloved (not) prez Bush!!

Obama turns towards McCain but McCain just looks straight at Lehrer

Avoidance?

Xaviera   September 26th, 2008 9:46 pm ET

Everytime the camera is on the both of them, you will see obama looking at McCain while he is speaking. But whenever Obama speaks, McCain won't even look at him.

dana   September 26th, 2008 9:43 pm ET

Why won't Senator Mccain look at Senator Obama, at least Obama has looked at him trying to debate issues, has Mccain ever had his racism questioned?

Jay   September 26th, 2008 9:41 pm ET

I agree…..this is a different debate. I do not think we need bickering back and forth. How about the questions and then an answer from each without the banter

Judy Karpis   September 26th, 2008 9:39 pm ET

Somebody tell McCain to stop emphasizing that he is not Ms. Congeniality in the Congress - that is so negative !

Vicki Wagner   September 26th, 2008 9:38 pm ET

both are falling back on prepared retoric—we need to hear what they would do—not what they have been using throughout the election season

Hillary Supporter for McCain/Palin   September 26th, 2008 9:37 pm ET

and McCain is off and runing while Obama thinks it the primary season. Sorry but only the big boys can play i.e. Senators with a record!

Judy Karpis   September 26th, 2008 9:37 pm ET

McCain is right - we are not taking care of our Veterans!

Roland   September 26th, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Come on Candy, that's unfair . . . McCain can't help it that his eyes look that way!

Joni Jones   September 26th, 2008 9:34 pm ET

its a stupid format. did they not get the rules before hand. mccain sounds like palin…what point is he making. he's just throwing stuff out hoping to stick something.

JIM...TX   September 26th, 2008 9:34 pm ET
