The conversation is mostly being directed to Lehrer.
The conversation is mostly being directed to Lehrer.

OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) — I think Jim Lehrer gave up trying to get them to talk to each other. It's even weirder in the hall — they are no more than 8 feet apart from each other and they speak to Lehrer only. But A+ for the effort.

Bubby   September 26th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Obama is looking presidential and answering all of Jim Lehrer's questions, while McCain won't even look at Obama–let alone answer the questions honestly. If body language is a clue, McCain is totally uptight and angry. These are not qualities I want to see in our next president.

Ms. M   September 26th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

To the Hillary supporter voting for McCain, you 'sold out' Apparently, you were only supporting her for one reason. If you were a democrat, McCain will NEVER support the issues that are important to YOU!

David Stein   September 26th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

McCain looks like he can't believe that he's actually debating a black man, he doesn't even acknowledge him. The dark legacy of intolerance in America, please POST this CNN.

Annette M   September 26th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

MaCain looks definetely unconfortable addresing Obama directly. He has yet to LOOK or address Obama directly….is that what he will do if he becomes President when he doesn't agree with another leader? He hears Obama alright…..but is he blind???

ha   September 26th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

obama is doing nothing but studddddedddering ohohoohohoh bbuuuutt lisssten blah blah blah

Mack   September 26th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Obama is doing better than he did with Hillary, but then Hillary would have kicked both their butts..What a shame that the best person to lead this country is not on stage….I think McCain sounds more natural while Obama has been prepped to heaven and back.

Patti   September 26th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Back to the first issue at hand, What will be done, so that we can get USA back on the road. McCain likes to call out names of people that he knows. Could maybe one of the names that he is calling out, maybe can help solve this world problem. {maybe}

Enough is Enough   September 26th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

I have noticed that MCain refuses to look at Obama as well. I love that Obama is standing up for his beliefs, and is not playing into McCains crazy ideals.

M.J. Lynn   September 26th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

The cheap shots and low blows by McCain have got to stop. McCain needs to start answering questions directly rather than speaking in circles. When will we get a straight answer from the straight talk express?

Scoti   September 26th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

I don't think that the format is flat. I think that McCain doesn't have enough respect to adhere to the format. Why won't he look at Obama? I believe he's intimidated and nervous.

sandee in Portland   September 26th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

At least Obama looks at McCain when he's talking. McCain only looks at the moderator. It's like he's afraid if he looks at Obama, he's afraid his temper will flare up.

judith   September 26th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

obama is looking more presidential.

Liz T, Tucson   September 26th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Obama talks to McCain, but McCain won't even look at Obama. What a nasty little man.

Betty   September 26th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

I understand why McCain can't look at Obama because I can't look at him either.

James C   September 26th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

I agree wit the majority of the comments. They are not really having the conversation with each other, but Obama is trying. McCain is not even trying to give the illusion of trying. I've been watching carefully for the pastd 10 minutes, and McCain has not looked at Obama once. Obama looked to him and addressed him many times.

Les   September 26th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Obama was trying to speak to McCain but McCain won't look at him. McCain looks like a hurt little child pouting. Even when they walked on stage McCain barely shook Obama's hand. McCain is good at one thing at that's being smug, smirking, sarcasm (learned from Palin probably) and practically singing the National Anthem instead of answering any questions directly. McCain says the same thing over and over about being patriotic. How can he speak with world leaders if he can't even speak to a democratic standing next to him?

Joyce Anne   September 26th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Obama has directly engaged with McCain numerous times. Were the rules of engagement explained prior to the debate?

Jeff   September 26th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Obama was referring to the moderator, Jim Lehrer. He didn't address Senator McCain as Jim.

JB   September 26th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Why won't McCain look at Obama? Is this what he'll do if he talks to foreign heads of states if he doesn't like or agree with them??? Not the person we need for President!!

Elly   September 26th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Well McCain does not like Senator Obama and that fact is very obvious
and rather ignorant on his part in my opinion when he refuses to even look at Senator Obama

Candy Crowley is one of the most neutral journalists on CNN in my opinion

Richie   September 26th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Why isn't Lehrer asking McCain where his flag pin is? That guy never wears a flag pin. How unpatriotic! He wasn't wearing yesterday at the white house either.

B.Benjamin   September 26th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I think that Sen. McCain was very disrespectful to Sen. Obama by not directing his questions to him and not looking him in the eye.

Jesse Palacios   September 26th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Even with the prodding of the mediator, the two candidates barely acknowledge one another. McCain seems agitated while Obama appears composed.

Shayna Rossiter   September 26th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

I sickened by the fact that John McCain will not look in the direction or at Obama at all. This man wants to be a president, then why can he not look Barack Obama in the face, or even in the same direction. Always look your competition in the eye

Brittney Quezada   September 26th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Wrong! McCain's arrogance totally shows in the fact that he refuses to acknowledge that Obama is right next to him. Obama has repeatedly attempted to speak directly to him and McCain is obviously more comfortable responding to Lehrer.

Mel C.   September 26th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Obama is doing a great job on stating the facts for his points of view.

bobby   September 26th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

McCain thinks that because he took a free trip to Iraq he is an expert.I am a veteran and respect what he went thru as a POW.The current issue is the economy and we need to bring the troops home before we have another Viet Nam

Jeff   September 26th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Obama doesn't want more troops in Iraq, he wants them in Afghanistan.

DR.SNELL   September 26th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

GOOD JOB, OBAMA. Finally he show he can run with the BIGG DOGS….

Roanna Peoria, AZ   September 26th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Obama is looking at McCain constantly. McCain will not look at Obama. He is ashamed at becoming the politician he has always hated.

Art H   September 26th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

No, Mary you're not. It's looking that Sen. McCain is not looking at Sen. Obama at all.

Drive_The_Nation   September 26th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

You can't ask the questions, and expect the candidate to ignore the moderator, and talk to each other. Especially because most of their talking points are worded talking about their opponent in the 3rd person, not 1st person. "John says this, supported this"… "Mr. Obama supported this, said this"…

You can't say your talking points, without re-wording them to fit the 1st person direct conversation.

S. Cotton   September 26th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

I believe McCain is afraid to look Obama DIRECTLY in the eyes and debate him. He seems uncomfortable discussing to Obama's FACE what he has been accusing him of behind his back. What a chicken!

Shilpi Chaudhry   September 26th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Yes, Obama is doing an awesome job, looking at both McCain and Lehrer, McCain seems to be talking to Lehrer only, as if Obama doesn't exist in the same room, doesn't that talk volumes about that guy, that he is just not a good guy, then how can he be a good leader?

Maria Penn-Reid   September 26th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Mr Lehr's moderating is not good. I'm surprised that he has not a better job with the questions asked nor engaging the candidates. Mr McCain is a LIAR and Mr Obama needs to be more aggresive with his ansers.

zuq   September 26th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

McCain has lost this debate. WOW! He's a mess.

Marquita   September 26th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

I'm wondering why Senator McCain is not making an effort to look Senator Obama's way this entire debate, even when he's being spoken directly to or about?

mcbush all over again zzzzz   September 26th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

same old mcsame mcbush does not look at Obama, at all, he does not even turn to him
that tells you a lot

study the body signals

here is a guy who can not even say names and or find the countries

TIME for VIAGRA METAMUCIL,and other DRUGS

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz = mcsame

lords, he is telling stories,
hello mcgrumpy go tell a story somewhere

what is he talking about…

Janelle Gaiteri   September 26th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

All Senator McCain has done is smirked, chuckled, and made a point to NOT look at Senator Obama. As a support of Senator Clinton, I was looking forward to paying close attention to this debate to see what way I'm going to sway. I wanted to hear their points and see how they interact with others. I find it very disrespectful on the way Senator McCain has been acting. How can you tell the people that you are going to fight for them, when you can't even look at the person speaking to you? How will you speak with foreign leaders when you can't look at them and when they speak you smirk and chuckle.

I am completely taken back by this, with the little respect he is having for his running mate. Senator Obama has tried many times to get him involved in a real DEBATe.. not a question and answer. Obama has been looking at him when he speaks and has been speaking to him.

Eddie Rauber   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I think Obama has made effort to talk to McCain, by looking at him and addressing him directly. McCain acts as if Obama is not even in the room.

fred tanner   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Does anyone notice that McCain never made eye contact with Obama but Obama always made eye contact with MCCain? Seems like McCain has an inferiority complex or lacks security. Not a great trait for the most powerful position in the world. Some "commander in chief" he would be based on this observation.

Body language is important. Confidence is important. McCain loses on both based on this debate.

T.E. GARIBAY   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY MCCAIN WON'T LOOK AT OBAMA?! IT SHOW WHAT TYPE OF PERSON HE IS !!!! O8AMA

small business operator   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Ask them what they are going to do tomorrow. The past is done. We need to move forward, think ahead. Today is almost over. What can we do to make tomorrow better?

Someone please ask?

Molash   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

No, Senator Obama will look at Senator McCain, but Senator McCain has not once looked at Senator Obama. Why is that? Is Senator McCain not will to enter into a discussion?

Jeff   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

With respect to Iran, when did the US become the NEW United Nations? With Iraq and Afghanistan, then add North Korea and Iran's nuclear capabilities, when will the US have time to take care of their own?

MsMaryland   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Actually, Obama is looking at McCain, but McCain only looks straight

anhea   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

I agree. Obama is not only looking at McCain but actively listening to his points and responding to them. McCain won't even look at Obama and is too busy snickering.

Doug   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Lose the dumb graph. It's not at all enlightening.

catherine   September 26th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

EN Omis — you are dead on accurate — Obama is directly addressing McCain - it's McCain who only looks at Lehrer

A Foreigner - VOTING - for Obama   September 26th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Hillary Supporter for McCain/Palin—- she can show her love… I mean look at Schneider's comments!!!

Meanwhile… this debate is slightly boring… they are not attacking each other like they need to….

I think the "lipstick bulldog" and Biden will be more interesting… as we all know the Palin sucks w/o her note-cards

P.   September 26th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Yes, Candy, I agree with you. The format of this event was a terrible idea.

Ryan   September 26th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

At least Mc Cain doesn't call Obama Jim as Obama has done more than once this debate!

Diane Dagenais Turbide   September 26th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

McCain can not look at Obama!

L.M. Scott   September 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Because McCain won't look at Obama. It's as if he won't acknowledge he's standing next to him. What's his problem?

tageis   September 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

I like the fact that McCain is looking at the audience as well as Lehrer. Obama is not the audience.

Kit   September 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Obama tried, is trying. McCain just won't go there.

Cee   September 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

I agree that Obama is directly addressing McCain. It seems like McCain is more interested in looking at his notes on the podium than at Obama.

Sean   September 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Hardly, Obama has been speaking directly to McCain directly and McCain hasn't once spoken directly to Obama.

Tanya   September 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

It's unnerving that Obama is actually attempting to speak directly to McCain, but McCain simply will not make eye contact.

atilio pernisco   September 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

I would never want a president that does not look at the camera or it's opponent in the american political debate.
McCain did not made an eye contact to Obama or to us the people during the all night program!! McCain is not truthworthy!!

Atilio, Los Angeles

GEEZER/GIDGET '08   September 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Why is Geezer refusing to even look at Obama or engage him directly?

That might be why if is failing

Mary Myers   September 26th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

They are rarely talking directly to each other, but has McCain completely forgotten where Obama is even standing? Obama seems to be looking from Lehrer to McCain when he's talking, and likewise while McCain is talking. But even when Obama is looking at McCain and talking to him directly, McCain never deviates his eyes from Lehrer (???). Or at least this is how is appears while watching. Am I missing something??

Jeff Davis   September 26th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Obama keeps talking in circles. He cannot keep up with McCain

Jamie   September 26th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

I'm wondering if Barack is planning on cutting the 10 billion dollar a month spending on the military, how is he going to get more troops in iraq?

E.N. Omis   September 26th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

The discussion idea falls flat for Senator McCain. Obama is directly addressing McCain. McCain won't even LOOK at Obama.

JayS   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Thats not entirely true Candy, give Obama at least a B- for trying and looking at McCain and calling him by his first name. McCain won't even look at Obama.

Minnesota Mom   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Obama is looking at McCain, but McCain is not playing. Are watching the same debate I am?

Nihal   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Obama is continuously talking directly to McCain

Brent   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

I'm about ready to watch the Beavers/Trojan game on my TIVO, even though I watched it live last night. COME ON……… this needs to get going. I thought Obama was going stand out but he's not. I thought McCain was going to be a no show and he showed up. I agree so much with you. Obama try's to talk to him but McCain keeps his head down and won't acknowledge he's even there. How weird is it there?

Carrie Pa   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Definally, two people that hate each other!

Kris K from RM,CA   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

The candidates dislike each other so much you can see it. McCain looks like he is standing near a black man that raped his daughter. Barack wants to engage him and McCain just looks the other way…it is making me uncomfortable watch McCain. He is a nasty, angry, old man and ut is showing. How can he work with people? He can't even look at a Obama. McCain is not running for King!

Art H   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

PLease, please stop spinning these homilies about "I heard from this person, I heard from that person". Please answer the questions being asked by Jim! Here's a thought - don't you think the world is watching this? What are they thinking as they watch the body language between the candidates?

Doh!   September 26th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

McCain is not convincing at ALL. Obama is hitting all the points HARD!
Keep it going Barack!!! McCain is on the defensive the whole time!!!!
You got him on the ropes Obama!!!!!!

watching the debate   September 26th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Obama wants to discuss with McCain and look at him often, but McCain just looks like he is going to explode, lloking at his desk

Nihal   September 26th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Obama has spoken to McCain directly

Richie   September 26th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Stupid format idea. Hope they jetison it for debate 4.

ted   September 26th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

you're right haha, I guess they won't talk to each other because perhaps they both know it would get too heated for tv!

Maggie   September 26th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Are we watching the same debate? Obama has addressed McCain directly on several points. McCain has yet to address Obama directly.

Hillary Supporter for McCain/Palin   September 26th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Crowley - be a netural reporter stop showing your love for Obama!
