Schneider: McCain taking risk

OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) - McCain is hanging a lot of his argument on Iraq. It's a very risky thing for him to do.

Crowley: Equally average performance from both candidates

CNN

Watch: Sen. John McCain explains why the U.S. cannot allow Iran to have nuclear weapons.

OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) - Debates are always a good thing - but anybody hear anything new? The two of them stayed pretty flat the whole night.

Watch: Undecided voters weigh in

Still, McCain worked in the phrase Obama "doesn't understand" several times, and Obama linked McCain to Bush several times - so I assume their campaigns will claim mission accomplished.

Watch: Is the U.S. vulnerable?

"America is safer now than it was on 9/11," he said, "But we have a long way to go before we can
declare America safe."

Watch: Candidates discuss broader impact of fighting in Iraq

Barack Obama, his Democratic rival for the White House, agreed that the United States is "safer in some ways," but said the country needed to focus more on issues such as nuclear non-proliferation and restoring America's image in the world.

Schneider: The Russia debate

OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) - Both McCain and Obama support including Georgia and others into NATO, at the same time saying that they don't want a new Cold War. Both of them are portraying Russia as a greater threat than we've been regarding them for a while...but they both insist they don't want that new cold war. They both agree on Russia, but it doesn't all add up.

Schneider: This is getting complicated

OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) - McCain is saying that if you meet without preconditions you are legitimizing them.

Obama, on the other hand, said he would not impose preconditions, but he would insist on preparation.

It's a very complicated argument.

Schneider: Another cheap shot?

CNN

Watch: Sen. John McCain says he doesn't need any 'on the job training' to be president.

(CNN) – McCain almost certainly misspoke when he said he wouldn't speak with Spain...I am not sure that's a fair thing for Obama to call him on.
