OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) - McCain's scoring points on Obama's opposition to the so-called surge in Iraq, a buildup of forces that McCain vigorously supported.

Obama's argument is that McCain was wrong on going to war in Iraq. McCain's arguing that Obama was wrong on the surge.

the average south korean is 3 " taller than the average north korean?? jeez mccain sounds nuts.

linda tobin   September 26th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

Out of curiosity, why doesn't McCain ever address his remarks to Obama? He consistently looks at the moderator.

Baze   September 26th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

McCain just scored a big point about speaking with iranians without pre conditions

I use to be an Obama supporter and I'm gay and liberal but I have to say that I feel much comfortable with John McCain now noticing how experienced and knowledgeable he is. I think I'm switching.

necie moore   September 26th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

I think McCain is prejudice, not once has he looked at Obama nor did he want to shake his hand when they first came out. Obama has been talking and looking at McCain from the beginning and McCain hasn'y looked that way yet.

zuq   September 26th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Schneider, are you watching the same debate? Please pay attention. Barack is crushing McCain. This is supposed to be McCain's strength? WOW?

linda tobin   September 26th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

Obama's comment that McCain acts as if the war in Iraq started when the surge began was one of the best.

Rene/kc   September 26th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

OBAMA IS AWSOME!!!! HE IS RIGHT ON POINT

Some honor   September 26th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

I don't see him scoring too many points on this issue and from the sounds of things on this board a large number of people agree with me on this.

Emily   September 26th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Obama is more schooled on foreign policy with out using platitudes. His plan makes sense in light of the events that have unfolded since 9-11.

Rob   September 26th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Ok if McCain thinks we have "won" because of his surge in Iraq then why have we not brought the troops home or diverted them to Afghanistan, which actually did bomb us in our own country?

s123k456   September 26th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

Overall, the debate is poorly moderated allowing both to speak as if they are giving speeches rather than follow the debate rules. But, Bill's silver hair has some reason to support John than anything else.

Hillary Supporter for McCain/Palin   September 26th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

E Ray – US needed to focus in Afgnaistan – please don't fool yourself there has been no terrorist attacks in Afganistan or Al Qaida since we kicked them out since 9-11. America security is centered around the Middle East! Know your Middle East history before you post a comment!

Rene/kc   September 26th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

OBAMA DOES NOT WANT WAR....WHAT HE IS SAYING IS THAT WE NEED TO FOCUS ON AFGHANISTAN....I LOVE THE COMMENT HE JUST MADE...OBAMA SAYS THAT HE WILL MEET WITH THOSE IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES WHEN HE CHOOSES, NOT JUST BECAUSE MCCAIN THINKS THAT HE SHOULD......SMART

chitowngal07   September 26th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

And one more point if anyone if condesending it is Obama!!! He can't even call McCain by his name....not once, not twice, but several times let's not play that game...

Jay   September 26th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Far too much time is being spent on the subject of Iran and Iraq. All of that will end soon enough due to money. How about what they will do for the American people. Change the subject al right al ready. I want to know about Health Care, the economey, education, gas crisis.

Enough is Enough   September 26th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

I am so proud of Obama sticking to the points and standing his ground respectfully.

carl from savannah   September 26th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

can mcshame admit that there should not have been a war in Iraq

greg   September 26th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

He doesnt want to cut taxes on the oil companies because his pockets are getting fat.

Tom   September 26th, 2008 10:09 pm ET

Ben

What debate are you watching. slight edge to McSame on foreign affairs. Obama destroyed him on the economy

chitowngal07   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

What I don't understand is why McCain doesn't call Obama on the fact that when the war was voted on Obama was not in the senate and was not in public office and had nothing to loose... Obama was writing his autobiography or memories or whatever they are called and McCain was already serving in the Senate. Obama risked nothing when and if he spoke out against the war had he been in the Senate things might have been different just look at Obama's record.

carl from savannah   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Bill get real. A surge should not have been because the war in Irag should have not been.

Dave in CHI   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

schneider????? huh???? What are you talking about???

greg   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

Obama looks so confident and presidential, Mccain looks scared and nervous. OBAMA is talking to us as people,Mccain is stuck in his old ways. Hey you cant show and old dog new tricks

Rene/kc   September 26th, 2008 10:08 pm ET

MCCAIN HAS HORRIBLE BODY LANGUAGE...HE CAN'T LOOK OBAMA IN THE EYE....THAT'S THE SIGN OF A SOMEONE WHO HAVE SOMETHING TO HIDE...I DON'T TRUST HIM AT ALL

Matt   September 26th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Schneider, are we watching the same debate?

GEEZER/GIDGET '08   September 26th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Bill,

I must be watching a debate in a parallel universe!, Hopefully, I will find the time portal at the end of the debate!

Sandra in Ontario   September 26th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

McCain has lost sight of what the surge was about..it's wasn't about just fighting..the Anwar Awakening tossed Al Quada out of their area, Sadr, and Saudi Arabia coming together had decreased the violence six months prior to the surge.
The surge was to help the al Malaki Government form a political consensus with Sunnis, Shias, and Kurds and create a constitution. What McCain's surge has done is ghetoized Iraq with walls and barb wire separating Sunnis from Shias into separate areas. These people lived togther and intermarried prior to Bush and McCain invading the country.

Baze   September 26th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

he did score more points on iraq, but here's the problem. America is TIRED OF IRAQ and Obama saying that we should've never gone there is ultimately a stronger argument.

E Ray   September 26th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I must agree, going into iraq was the problem in the first place. The US needed to focus solely on Afghanistan.

Jay   September 26th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

McCain is hell bent on continuing this war in the middle east and he is building up to the "fear factor" of the Bush administration.

chitowngal07   September 26th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

I don't blame McCain for not looking at Obama in the end who really cares they are not running for most likeable they are running to be the Head of our country!! I don't care if neither one likes the other one........Just say the truth stop the lies...

tan   September 26th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Obama is wavering! He is clearly more intelligent and has the right policies (economic and international) but his delivery is very poor. Unless he pulls it together the debate is going to mccain (god help us if he wins!)

Hillary Supporter for McCain/Palin   September 26th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

People wake up – McCain is wining like he did the other time REMEBER!

Diana Menhennick   September 26th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Obama is telling america what he will do if elected while McCain is using the same scare tactics.

Ben   September 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

McCain is absolutely destroying Obama on both the economy and foreign policy. McCain seems to be talking from his heart and Obama sounds like he has strings pulling his jaw up and down with nothing but scripted responses.

I'm shocked McCain is doing so well after all the negativity from this site saying how McCain didn't stand a chance.

MC CAIN MADFE REMARKS TO OIL IN IRAN.

SOUNDS LIKE ANOTHER WAR FOR OIL ?

liz   September 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Senator McCain has not once looked at Sen. Obama and it is so unbelievably ridiculous!!! He needs to grow up!

Darrell   September 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

A war that was built on lies much like the McCain campaign.Obama is absolutley keeping up or ahead of bomb bomb McCain.I am getting sick of McCain saying Obama does not understand only to have Obama come out with the correct understanding. It is easy to tell McCain has dropped in polls as he starts the scare tactics.

greg   September 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

MCCAIN just does not get it, they used 9/11to go to iraq and that was wrong. Of course once a war starts you have to fight whether it was right to go their or not. BUT WE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THEIR IN THE FIRST PLACE

Hillary Supporter for McCain/Palin   September 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Obama is against the war in Iraq but in favor of war with Pakistan! Go figure!!!!

Nikk   September 26th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Oh no he didn't just say 'straight talk'! OMG, he's delusional.

Ann T   September 26th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

I too disagree with Schneider. Although McCain so far is ho.lding his own, he rambles too much, isnt' giving clear answers and is a bit testy. Obama is doing better, especially considering foreign policy is suppose to be a McCain edge.

chitowngal07   September 26th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

I beg to differ. They are both talking to America!!! If they did not want anyone to look at the moderator they should have placed in the dim light too!! That is just nit picking. I think that Obama's strategy is to piss of McCain which he should be concetrating on the questions and what we Americans need.

sneaky pete   September 26th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

the surge was a one time incident and anyone who was against the war would be against the surge. did it work? yes but what difference has it really made. I still want to know how we are winning the war and what we are getting out of even being over there.

LA33ROSS   September 26th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

What points. He jokes about bombing Iran and supported the war to began with. So what points can he make at this time. He is not good underpressure. He look like he wants to jump out his skin

Hispanic Woman for McCain   September 26th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Get over how the war started...both parties heard the same intelligence and both parties cheered the President along with the rest of the country when we went in and defeated the murderous tyrant. We are there now and we need to win. Our troops are committed and our commanders on the ground are smart. We can't back out...BTW...McCain is not attached to the President, if he was, I would be paying for your financial bailout.

MH   September 26th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

Invading another country is WRONG! Period!! Nothing can be justified about a wrong war.

liz   September 26th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

He just stated that he visited Iraq...I know for a fact that he ONLY visited the places where the President could be allowed to go!!! He did not go into where the troops are there suffering!!! Maybe if the world would wake up and see that maybe that could see that McCain is WRONG!!!

inuk of the north   September 26th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Bill Clinton is right.

This guy has parlayed one speech against the war in 2003 into an entire presidential campaign.

Hope for change, change for hope, need for change, change for need, duh.

Can I be president too?

Christie   September 26th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Show me one picture, where McCain actually looks at Obama! At no time does McCain even look at him! Body language suggests Senator McCain is purely disgusted with Senator Obama.

i beg to differ!   September 26th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

i disagree with you, Bill....

KS   September 26th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Maggie,

You are right. Obama is talking straight to McCain ever since Jim insisted at the start they should be talking directly and not through him.

Zach   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Im curious as to how he is GAINING points? Yes Sen. Obama opposed the surge, at least he took a stance on what he thought was right. The fact that he STILL says that if he had to do it over he would vote against it, shows more character than Sen. McCain saying he still thinks it was a good idea to go to war in the first place!

ABrown   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

McCain is partially right about the surge; however, Obama is right the war in Iraq should have never happened.

Nikk   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Look, McCan't: Didn't you hear what Obama said? We wouldn't be talking about the surge in Iraq if Bush/Cheney/Rice didn't lie about WMDs being in Iraq.

tillman   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

HEART STRING TUGGING, IS OLD MC CAIN.

Why do you never post my comments?   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Love the pink tie, Obama.

liz   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

I am frustrated with listening to McCain speak about Iraq!!! Does he even know that Gen. Petreaus is not the General any longer??? My fiance is there serving and I am digusted with McCain right now!!!

The Patriot   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Hey, stop using our soldiers as your 'special' friends................both of you! Only one of you on that stage know anything about serving your country in a foreign land. I am not a supporter of either. But shut the heck up about WE WERE WRONG TO GO INTO IRAQ guess what? W\e are there so deal w/ that, hindsight is 20/20

boone   September 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Obama is a joke when it comes to foreign policy. Simply speaking about what he had been briefed on by his campaign advisors- not experience.

Kit   September 26th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Can we just stop sending our boys and girls into the mouth of the dragon just to satisfy the armchair warmongers.

Jenny   September 26th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Obama is focusing on going into Iraq – a vote he didn't particate in because he was in Illinois. Anyone can be right in hinesight, but we don't need somebody who has figured out events he watched on CNN....we need somebody who figures out how to resolve current and future events, somethinghe has never done.

Mike S.   September 26th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

I agree, McCain is talking to the moderator, Obama is talking to America.

Obama's strategy of ticking McCain off seems to be working. A lot of jaw grinding and rosy faces.

MM   September 26th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

"dishonor" "dishonor" "dishonor" - that's all McCain is about. Well it was a dishonor to go into Iraq in the first place and that is something he can't admit.

rachel   September 26th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

McCain is doing a good job, and obama supporters would never admit so dont look for them too.

Jay   September 26th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Dr. J   September 26th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

John McCain and these stories. Deal with the issues. You would not have to tell these stories if you did not go into Iraq! Liars!!

i have mccain on mute.

Pierre   September 26th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

McCain scoring points.... Obama scoring points...... and when are they supposed to start debating and exchange ideas instead of showing us their attack ads ?

Revi   September 26th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Why is there no mention of us paying the Iraqis not to fight? Also, why is John just repeating parts of his stump speech.

Jason, Indianapolis   September 26th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

McCain is an idiot! McCain isn't even answering the question....it's a round a round we go, let me spin my words to sound like I know what I'm saying! What a loser!

Working Mom   September 26th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Shut up Schnieder! Your trying to push you bias and bigoted opinion on the rest of us who are clear able to watch the debate and make up our own minds! McCain is showing what a lier and egomanic he is...

chitowngal07   September 26th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

Foreign policy was linked with global finances of course they are both tied on is perceived to be strong on one issue and the other on the other issue.......

Denise From Tennessee   September 26th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Why is McCain so focused on the past and not the present.? I have watched and listened to the debate but he keeps bringing up items that have happened years ago? for me that is the past and I personally don't think he is scoring points as most of the voters now live in the future

WAKE UP AMERICA   September 26th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Iraq war was wrong, we need to get out and stop sending money to them, we need that money here to fix our economy.

Robert in Hartford, CT   September 26th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Really, the story tonight is how McCain is playing small ball with each issue, and does not get the big picture. A sinking ship requires big action, not fingers plugging leaks.

Mary   September 26th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

This surge business is getting old...we shouldn't be there in the first place, ergo McCain loses.

Sandra   September 26th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Win WHAT??? Can somebody PLEASE tell me what we stand to WIN in Iraq? What win???!!! It frustrates me so to hear McCain continually talk about winning in Iraq, but what the heck is winning?

chitowngal07   September 26th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Well he was wrong on the surge!!! How could Obama not acknowlege that he was wrong!!! Just like he is wrong for the country at this time!!!!

Craig in Kansas   September 26th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

I don't know that he is scoring points when you go back to the fact that the American people were lied to when we went into Iraq. We went on false pretenses thanks to this Republican President that John McCain is so attached to.

Janice Il   September 26th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Diana NJ   September 26th, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Yes and you want to hear what.... ... WE ALL KNOW WE SHOULD NOT HAVE GONE INTO IRAQ...... a surge...???? hum.... we should not have gone into a war of choice not preparing our sons to fight and kill those who did nothing to us..

Sandra   September 26th, 2008 9:57 pm ET

The surge isn't the issue. It's the STUPID judgement that sent us into that FOOLISH war. And McCain had that STUPID judgement.

jonny   September 26th, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Who cares about a surge. The surge did not win the war in Iraq, and is just a small move forward. It does not fix the big mistake of ever going into Iraq in the first place, and will not leave to "winning". There is no way to "win" that kind of war. Why put more money and people and deaths into surges when the most it could do it advance you a little.

Jane   September 26th, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Neither was right 100%. The question is how it will be handled moving forward.
