Has McCain truly suspended his campaign?.
Has McCain truly suspended his campaign?.

(CNN) – The difference between a suspended campaign and a full campaign is starting to look a lot like the distinction between a speed walk and a slow jog: to the untrained eye, the pace seems about the same.

“Campaigning, fundraising, advertising – it’s all on hold,” spokesman Brian Rogers told CNN hours after John McCain said he was suspending his presidential run until the financial crisis was resolved.

Watch: McCain move called misstep

But on Thursday, the campaign sent its morning update email, albeit a slightly muted version, to reporters as usual. John McCain followed his Wednesday night network interview with a major economic speech at the Clinton Global Initiative conference the next morning. Later in the afternoon, one campaign aide accompanied him to a high-profile White House meeting; another met with deep-pocket fundraisers in New York.

Running mate Sarah Palin made a stop by Ground Zero Thursday, taking questions from the press for the first time since being named to the Republican ticket. Even as campaign aides continued to contact television stations to pull ads from the air as directed, television spots were still airing in key battleground states nationwide.

Campaign headquarters in Crystal City was still open for business, issuing occasional statements; so were offices in half a dozen battleground states contacted by CNN, where staffers seemed unaware of any change in their daily activities.

McCain staffers and surrogates took to the airwaves, some taking swipes at Barack Obama.

“I was on TV with [McCain aide] Nicole Wallace today,” Obama senior advisor Robert Gibbs told a group of reporters at a Christian Science Monitor meeting in Washington on Thursday. “If they suspended her, she didn’t get the memo.”

Anyone who somehow missed McCain’s announcement that his campaign would be taking a hiatus wouldn’t get the news from his Web site: as of Friday morning, the site’s main page was still soliciting donations, recruiting volunteers and directing visitors to Web videos attacking Barack Obama.

The only hint of the events of the past few days was in the brief featured quote from McCain, which included a line that he was asking his campaign to work with the Obama team and the Presidential Debate Commission to delay Friday’s faceoff. But debate organizers may be taking comfort from assurance offered by the link just below that on the page: the campaign’s top “Upcoming Event” is still the University of Mississippi matchup scheduled for 9 pm this evening.

Yeah, and the Wall Street Journal should rename themselves the Democratic Street Journal. And George Will is a liberal hippie now.

Once again McLair/Paliar are saying one thing and do another. We don't need another 4 years of the Bush Admin. It seems the American people are finally waking up to the constent lies of the campagin. Does Paliar actually thing she has foregin Policy knowledge because her state has a military base the watches the borders with Russia and the fact she can see Russia from her house. What a joke.

And now McLair goes to Washington and he is going to be the reason the bailout plan works. McCain just admitt it you campagin is failing. Live up to the words you stated the other day. If by supending the campaign to work on the bailout causes your presidental bid to fail then so be it, you made the right choice for the American people. Please just withdraw from the race, this will benefit the American people well. We don't need a President who can't multi task. I would be really nervous what would happen if there were multiple situations going on in the country and the world at the same time. You'd probally pick straws to see which one handle.
Obama/Biden08

I'm John McCain and I approve…wait I don't…or do I approve…never mind I'm not sure too many things happening at once.

Sandra   September 26th, 2008 11:02 am ET

For the Republicans to do something like that, it is very insulting to the american people… It's basically thinking that people are too stupid to see what is going on!!!

Please America wake up vote Obama/Biden 08
The only good choice…

When is a suspension not a suspension?

When it's a cheap transparent moron political stunt by a senile and unstable old warhorse.

Neither Obama nor McCain are on the finance committee, they've got NOTHING to do with putting the bill together.

Mary Ann   September 26th, 2008 11:01 am ET

McCain showed up at the WHite House yesterday to talk about the economic bail out with his campaign manager. Senator Obama showed up to the White House with his senate staffer in charge of economic issues. Which candidate came more prepared? Which candidate is actually working and not posturing (while still in NYC). Our country needs sound, prepared leadership- not stunts.

Jack   September 26th, 2008 11:01 am ET

A suspension is not a suspension when it's announced by a liar! Now the evidence shows that both running mates on the GOP ticket are bold faced liars!

Yes We Can   September 26th, 2008 11:00 am ET

All I need to do to find the opposing comments is to search for the word "liberal" that "conservatives" now use as an insult. Most "conservatives" have had the good sense to keep quiet the last couple of days in the midst of this absolute train wreck that your candidate has turned his campaign into. Its plain to see he isn't doing anything to help, and his posturing has put the regular democratic process as well as the entire economy in jeopardy.

But go ahead, get angry. Throw baseless insults around. Pound your fists on the table. It is, after all, what you are best at. Its just not going to work anymore. People have had enough of you.

Meanwhile, we "liberals" will carry you, kicking and screaming, back into better foreign relations, a balanced budget, a better energy policy, and a strong economy. Just like we always have.

Yes, we can.

Smart in Ohio   September 26th, 2008 11:00 am ET

The morning after McCain said that he's suspended his campaign, I saw a McCain approved campaign ad. So I'm confused about what exactly "suspending the campaign" even means.

Seems like its all lip-service – a political stunt to make people believe he's doing something that he really isn't.

Gracie   September 26th, 2008 10:59 am ET

When you are John "THE LIAR" McCain. John McCain claimed he HAD to rush back to Washington to help negotiate the Bail Out Plan, but when he got here, he did what he ALWAYS does…. and that is DO NOTHING. This whole suspension claim from John McCain was nothing but a POLITICAL BOGUS GIMMICK in the hopes that the American VOTERS are "STUCK ON STUPID" and would NOT realized they were being suckered yet again by John McCain!!! I mean, this is a candidate that has been CAUGHT in his repeated lies!!! I mean, he CAN'T blame anyone else for his own STUPIDITY when it comes to his constant "DO NOTHING" record. He arrived in DC and walked around like this "CLUELESS CLOWN", but NEVER rallied his Republican Party NOR did he SPEAK UP on where he stood in regards to the Bail Out Plan. JOHN McCAIN DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, this is what he's done for the past 29+ years!!!

The Republicans are nothing but "SHOW BOATING, HOT AIR TALKING JERKS". They NEVER address the crisis and step up to solve the problems. They just continue to cause distractions and diversions so they DON'T HAVE TO MAN UP TO THE CRISIS!!!

Unfortunately, politics can't be suspended. We will have an election on Nov 4th no matter what. If D-Day during WWII did not stop our election process, then this issue should not either.

What exactly does McCain has to offer? Or Obama for that fact. Obama has stated his position. McCain has not. He's put himself in a box – if he goes along with the plan that uses taxpayers money, he runs the risk of upsetting his conservative base by not backing the House republicans. If he goes along with the plan, then he looks like he's siding with President Bush and goes against everything he believes with de-regulation.

My main point is what can he offer at this point? The senate Republicans have 40 votes for a plan. Is he one of them? How much influence does he have over House republicans? His presence is not helping anything. Remember, the economy is not his strong point, how can he broker a deal on a subject he knows nothing about?

WOW   September 26th, 2008 10:59 am ET

REALLY

Bruce   September 26th, 2008 10:58 am ET

This is all political ppsturing by mccain…He will show up at the last mintue and tout how he saved america from financial ruin…which would have been done yesterday ahd he not intervened. he will also calimthat he did not ahve time to prepare because he suspended his campaign, that is lie…..he is still on tv campaigning, palin is campaighning, and ads are still running here in PA…so there is no suspension ..again a politcal trick.
If the repubs continue to block this plan…look for more banks to go under next week, and then we will all know who to blame.
Want to turn the ecomony around, and please the people of the country,. take that 700B and divide it to all the tax payers, send it to us, withhold taxes so that some of the money comes right back to the government. The the American people woudl ahve money to pay the mortgages, pay off bills, and make the economy liquid again. Give the bailout in it's entirity tot he people…now if that was proposed by someone and the facts as I think are correct, that would be the best answer and show that the government gets it.

Independent White Woman   September 26th, 2008 10:58 am ET

McCain returning to Washington, D.C. and supposedly suspending his campaign is a political gimmick…….He is just GrandStanding …..of course he is taking orders from the GOOD OLD Boys Rick Davis And Steve Schmidt a longtime Protege of Karl Rove …….He just sit there with that silly Cheshire Cat Grin …….OLD FORT!!!!

Mickie in PA   September 26th, 2008 10:58 am ET

The only thing McCain has suspended is his sanity, which refuses to return. I still receive his emails and still see ads, and ruff tuff hockey puck mom, Sarah, is still making appearances, so what is suspended other than McCain's understanding of the issues and his honor?

Truth Hurts   September 26th, 2008 10:58 am ET

It's a suspension when it comes to the debates and poll numbers. It is not a suspension when it comes to the furndrasing, photo opts and grandstanding!!! Simple as that!! There is no excuse for Mccain not to debate. I hope he don't show up and the town hall meeting begain. This will piss the GOP off because a town hall meeting is what they wanted with Obama anyway but Obama said the GOP don't control what , where and when he does something!!!

I'm suprised how Obama has kept his "cool" in all this!

All those negative attacks McShame and Palin made towards Obama/Biden.

We need a intelligent person in White House and someone that does not act on first instinct, but rather make intelligent and calculated decisions.

Tony in NM   September 26th, 2008 10:53 am ET

I can't imagine a candidate for the presidency more scary that John McCain…….. except, perhaps, his running mate. In hearing her answer a few press questions, it is obvious why the McCain campaign has tried to keep her from talking directly to the press.

…..and we thought George W. Bush was bad……….

The People don't want this bailout as advertised.
Dubya is screaming, hair ablaze, for it.

Republicans are just quitting and moping as usual when they don't have absolute control.
And what exactly is McRaniac DOING to improve above conditions???
Anyone????

Mike   September 26th, 2008 10:53 am ET

I have been a long time democrat… I can not believe the crap that people post on the blogs…

In this instance McCain is doing the right thing… Like I really care to hear how he and Obama disagree especially when it over typical party lines…

I would rather both of them cancel the debate and do their job as active sitting US Senators.

Amanda   September 26th, 2008 10:51 am ET

McCain is trying to make it seem as though he is trying to put the economy before what he has been fighting for, and I think it is a ploy, considering that American's are leaning towards Obama's economic plans. Also, most American's feel as though Obama will be the clear winner in Friday's debate, and I think that McCain is afraid of losing, and afraid that people will see that he continues to repeat himself, and the only thing that he can say is that he was a POW, and he supports Iraq, Obama would be able to tear him apart, and I think that he knows he is not ready to step out and speak for himself, and not hide behind someone elses speaches.

Bill   September 26th, 2008 10:50 am ET

It seems to me that McCain was a no show for a debate with George W. Bush back in the 2000 election. After yesterday, does anybody know McCain's new position. Making split second decisions without planning seems to be his style. Hate to think of a President acting in this manner.

Beverly, NYC   September 26th, 2008 10:50 am ET

Now that McCain's campaign is "suspended" his lying VP should go back to Alaska and get this troopergate investigation out of the way why their campaign is still paying for the legal advice. On November 5th they will drop her like a hot rock and she will be raising the debt to pay the legal bill.

William Courtland   September 26th, 2008 10:50 am ET

With out a computer a solution to the financial crisis is:

When employed for the lawful gain of trade currencies one gains the right to general union protections.
A real union is created by a governments action, it just offers and can demand safety, but a union would be created as an autonomous unit of the government which gain specialized pathways and patent-like safety processing channels for worker representation.

A union then generates the paycheck of affiliation providing the worker with salary. A union does not ever hold securities for more than a business day so activates immediate transfers.

A bank is really only storage and no ideas of using clients monies for investments should be allowed. Banks should be now keeping, hand, typed, computed, and digital copy back-ups to the usual system. A bank is only a service of transfer outside the Union facilitations, and so can also provide the sale of the home nations currency in exchange for those paychecks.

Currency should be stamped or otherwise marked for a single use note. Change should be metalic or gem and so thought of as equal value, but the holder also holds the price of the manufacturing costs and all applicable taxes in creation and its first sale.

Taxation can only happen when a service is offered by the government and becomes a utility or service once activated by the individual. Representation of taxation comes as a capitalist's market; item by item, grade by grade, even personal service quality insured or fired/denied employee status by the union of trade, or by the general union of unique jobs(so denying to the individual a unique job lot).

Paper money is used to thwart the ideals of peace and tranquility, but insures privacy to those paranoid, taxation of privacy should be expected.

A nation provides the securities for those settled, but one of those securities is privacy of property and honestly the government can only provide the routes to privacy and must rely only on levels exile for punishment or to insure that protection…

I agree with Parker that watching Palin is a cringefest of the highest order.

However, the bulk of what she says causes me great consternation, particularly in these areas:

1) Yes, Joe Biden occasionally suffers from foot-in-mouth disease. However, given the breadth of his knowledge and the amount of campaigning he's doing, occasional gaffes are expected. Palin's unscripted appearances are few and far between and she is incapable of speaking to his level of expertise on any subject, except possibly Alaska's proximity to Russia.

2) This comment of Parker's, "bow out for personal reasons, perhaps because she wants to spend more time with her newborn. No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first." reeks of sexism and serve only to harm women's pursuit of higher office. Those of us who criticized Palin for putting her career ahead of her family, in particular her special needs child and 17-year-old daughter especially in need of privacy, were severely taken to task by conservative and Republican supporters. And yet that now becomes an acceptable reason for her to withdraw? Once again, the hypocrisy of the Republicans stuns me, even though I know that I should expect no less.

CNN – would love to see an interview with a few major PUMAs. A few questions:

- What would Hillary have done in this situation – suspend? Debate? Dither?

- What do you think about the suspension that isn't a suspension?

- What do you think about Sarah Palin now that she has actually spoken to reporters a few times?

- Who are you voting for now?

You know I have followed this election very closely. And I have analyze it over and over again to myself.
There is now way in hell this election should be this close.
All the strikes are against McCain. I would not even call his campaign a campaign. It is more like a circus freak show.
This is a no brainer of choice.

My Conclusion: The race appears to be close becuase Obama is black. There is no other explanation. If you are thinking otherwise you need to get your head out of the sand.

Just for once, JUST THIS ONCE I am hoping America will do to right things and elected the right person this time after 8 years of fears by the GOP.

McCain and his running mate is not fit to lead. If they win this thing it will be George Bush times 4. If you think the last 8 years was bad, think again with McCain and Palin in charge.

Can you say WW111 with the heavily armed nuke central 2 (Russia)!!

No Thanks!   September 26th, 2008 10:48 am ET

It amazes me that this man can't do more than one thing at a time. Obama was on the hill yesterday, but he didn't need to suspend his campaign while he was there. He was able to do both, what is McCain's problem?

Richard Sattich - Georgetown Ky.   September 26th, 2008 10:47 am ET

The only thing he suspended was his rational thought process.
This ploy is transparent to anyone and everyone that isn't ruled
by blind faith to the Republican party. His ploy won't work.
He won't get credit for bringing the Republican House in line.
The only reason they backed off the agreement yesterday
was because he ask them to stall it. That is obvious.
So he can't take credit for convincing them to resolve the issue.
There is no reason for him to be in Washington today.
There is no reason he cannot debate tonight.

Peg, Canada   September 26th, 2008 10:45 am ET

What?! He must think that we as voters are ignorant. Precisely why this man should not be elected….and why he WONT be elected

No way No how   September 26th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Here are some pearls of wisdom from our wannabe VP candidate
in an interview with Katie Couric
Palin, in a rambling and largely incoherent response, responded,QUOTE "That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in. Where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy. Um, helping, oh, it's got to be about job creation, too. Shoring up our economy, and getting it back on the right track. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions, and tax relief for Americans, and trade — we have got to see trade as opportunity, not as, uh, competitive, um, scary thing, but one in five jobs created in the trade sector today. We've got to look at that as more opportunity. All of those things under the umbrella of job creation."

She makes Bush look smart. Open your eyes people

Proven leaders are people who show integrity by doing what they say they are going to do. If McCain was half the leader his ego is telling him he is, then he would have walked the walk and suspended his campaign, not just talked the talk.

Luke Brown   September 26th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Big Mac is clearly manipulating House GOP members to make political hay out of this mess on Wall Street. In picking Palin he showed he is willing to do ANYTHING to get an advantage regardless of whether it is in the best interest of the country.

Here's an idea: Since McCain thinks Palin is fit to be President, he should ask her to take the lead in negotiating a bailout deal.

His integrity because, guess what…the campaign is still going on, therefore he is not telling the truth.

His judgment because who would stop their campaign, just have their VP pick up the slack. His ability to lead because he has shown that he cannot attack multiple problems, he is a one-trick pony.

McCain cannot be truthful so why would a statement claiming he's put his campaign on hold be any different from anything else he says! There were ads still running in battleground states…the viewers who seen them are NOT the liars…the McCain camp and his reps ARE! I'm sure his VP pick has him scratching his head and wondering "what in the world have i done". Anyone who seen the Couric interview has to know that Palin is NOT qualified to be interviewed or asked questions by the press…it is painfully obvious why she has been hidden from the media! McCain is stalling for time and by announcing he suspended his campaign…he can use that as an excuse for why he's behind in the polls, why he needs to cancel his debate and the VP debate, etc…He'll say it's cuz he hasn't been on the trail…cuz he's been in washington. Washington doesn't need him sticking his nose where it doesn't belong, He's more of a hinderance than a help and he's only trying to get the media coverage & attention, and by doing so it's still politicing!….so why say he's "suspended his campaign".

I live in a big market in a battleground state and I saw a McCain ad last night. He didn't suspend his campaign at all, the big liar. How can anyone take anything this man says or does seriously? He's not even trying to cover up his lies now! Americans, do you really want another 4 years with a president who will shamelessly lie to you to get what he wants? Can you really trust this man to lead Congress to an economic solution that benefits all Americans, not just the wealthy? Look up Keating 5 and Rick Davis' ties to Freddie Mac–McCain's actions speak louder than his words (which are all lies anyway).

And as for the bailout, House Repubs won't go along with the plan–instead they want to give MORE tax breaks to the wealthy to "prompt them to invest their own dollars" in Wall Street. Yeah, because all those tax breaks the wealthy have gotten during this administration really propped up our economy … Of course, there's no Plan B if the Richie Riches decide they'll just keep their new money, thank you.

Senator McCain reminds me of my grandfather when gramma was cooking dinner. He would wander around the kitchen, stare in the pots, put his finger in the sauces, tell her she was cutting the tomatoes the wrong way and generally get in the way until she shooed him out, reminding him gently that he had left the gardening half done. "I'll call you when it's ready, John." Senator McCain (and Obama for that matter) have nothing to DO until this bill is written – which is being done by the chairmen of the finance and commerce committees. Then they get to vote. Meanwhile, they have other things to do. Namely: DEBATE. Senator McCain, you can keep in touch and bug everyone just as well by phone, fax, email and Flower Delivery Service, stop pretending you have to be Johnny on the spot to make these experienced, knowledgeable, dedicated people 'behave'. They chair important committees, sir, and you do not. If by some awful chance you win in November, you will have to work with them and treating them like errant children for press coverage is not likely to make that a comfortable thing.

TM in Colorado   September 26th, 2008 10:39 am ET

The Repulicans haven't cared about our economy for the last 8 years. All of the help they are offering and McCain having to "rush" to Washington to work on the economic crisis is simply done to boost McCain in the polls. He is falling behind. He has no plan for our economy (fundamentals of our ecomony are basically sound), no plan for foreign policy (stay the course in Iraq). All I've heard out of him and Palin both is psyco babble. Concede the election now McCain and go home to your Barbie doll.

This is WHY we must have CHANGE!

USA in 08   September 26th, 2008 10:38 am ET

Regardless of whether we need a bail out or not, McCain has politicized a very important issue. He has no "offical position" on the bail out, doesn't know what to say in Worshington, continues his campaign under the viel of the term "suspended", is obviously just wanting attention.

Everytime Obama takes a lead in the polls, McCain acts like a three year old and throws some sort of tantrum to garnish attention. This is so sad. And he is threatening to rob the american people of tonights debate because he can't afford 90 minutes of his time to tell us how "he" would fix all this if he actually had any authority in the matter.

The 3:00 am call came and McCain ran away. Obama now has my vote and it is truly sad that this great american hero and POW has self destructed.

Wow… People are calling into question McCain's actions for suspending his campaign…

Lets see the thing McCain wants most is to become president… Instead of proceeding with his campaign and debating Obama over things we have all heard for months now… He decided to put his most important personal accomplishment on hold… so he could meet with the people who are deciding on the biggest proposed financial bail out plan to save our country's failing economy.

I guess atleast 47% of you do not know what leadership is about or what Country First is all about!!!

OVERSIGHT & CHECK & BALANCES: I do not understand?? What is the problem with establishing the above to the $700 Billion? I thought that our government has the same principles built into it? The President is the leader of our country, but he/she does not have absolute power. The House & Senate, along with the president have to agree with whatever the problem is! And somewhere down the line our leaders will inform us, those without power or influence, of there decisions, and we follow blindly, hoping & trusting in their decisions!
If WE the people find out they have failed us then we throw them out and elect some more! Sounds like the above to me! I would agree that from what we have seen that the system has many problems and maybe it is time to take a REAL GOOD LOOK at our constitution & its rules and to update/add things to bring it into REAL TIME!!

How childish and transparent could it be. his enrollment and forward to while we as a country have lots of
work left to do, we have come a long way. With a sense of pride the
picture of an African American and a White Male on the same stage
at the University of Mississippi vying to become the most powerful
man on earth emerged. While the country is in an economic crisis, the
matter is in committee and a few hours of time from both candidates
will send a symbolic message. YES WE CAN!

Worried about a debate??? When the financial sector of the US is about to come tumbling down… Last I checked both of the presidential candidates were elected to do a job in Congress… I think it is very important that both of them are there to vote… then make public how they voted!!!

After reading some of the blogs… it is amazing how quickly all of you want to jump on a "quick fix" and blame McCain… It seems most Americans especially the younger generation seem to forget that they need to "look before they leap!!!"

I would prefer that the lawyers analyze the proposed bail out line by line to make sure this does not turn into another Great Depression…

Pat   September 26th, 2008 10:22 am ET

John McCain is trying to divert attention from his failing campaign to the failing economy. His last minute rush to Washington has just gummed up the works and made people panic more than necessary. Yes,it is a serious situation. Obama has been monitoring it from wherever he was. He made it to Washington with out too much trouble to get to the meeting he was needed at, now he is continueing on with the business of running his campaign. I have no doubt that when a proposal comes out of the committee that is working on it and is ready for a vote, both Biden and Obama will be there to vote. Since neither Obama or McCain are on the finance committee, they need to continue with their regular duties until they are needed in Washington to discuss it on the Senate floor and vote on it.

Felly   September 26th, 2008 10:22 am ET

McCain is a hypocrite. He is incompetent. If he cannot run his campaign, how in the world could he run the country?

Peggy - TX   September 26th, 2008 10:21 am ET

There is no logical reason to suspend the campaign. The Republicans are stonewalling in a crude attempt to some how make McCain look like the hero.

McCain lied to his first wife about his many girl friends he opening flaunted on the side. When he met his current wife he lied to her about his age to try and be more appealing to her. He lied about Obama sending operatives to Alaska, when the operatives in Alaska were actually from his campaign and are probably illegally interfering with a criminal investigation.

I never before question McCain his patriotism, but now I do! The importance of the current crises to America is too greater for him to block progress in a rather crude attempt to stomp the current momentum for Obama.

Why should a deal of such a size be rushed through?? What is Henry Paulsen trying to hide? Both candidates should be there and be part of the negotiations. One of them will be the next president and will have to live with this mess. I would think they would want some input!!

There needs to be a full accounting and oversight of what exactly this money is going to be spent on. There needs to be a full investigation of the heads of these failed entities to see what criminal liability there may be.

In chemistry, a suspension ceases to be a suspension when it separates and all the sludge [like toxic lies] sinks to the bottom…

Mike   September 26th, 2008 10:18 am ET

This article just says what we already know. The whole McBush 'campaign suspension' was just a gimmick to make McBush look like he puts 'Country First' while in fact he continued with his usual campaign schedule. He canceled his appearance on David Letterman knowing that it would recieve media coverage and make him look as though he had to rush to Washington tosave America.
However, Letterman made a complete fool of McBush by proving that he was actually in the same studio as Letterman and was doing an interview wit Katie Couric. Then Letterman laughed at McFool on the Air and offered to drive him to the airport. McFarce is fast becoming a bad joke.

R Saunders   September 26th, 2008 10:18 am ET

SENATOR MCCAIN HAVING GONE TO WASHINGTON TO HELP IRON OUT A DEAL BETWEEN THE PARTIES AND HAVE A BILL TO
FUND (BAILOUT, RESCUE) THE ECONOMIC SLOWDOWN AND PROVIDE THE MONETARY ENGINE FOR THE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS TO FUNCTION AS THEY SHOULD, OUGHT TO NOW GO TO MISSISSIPPI AND DEBATE SENATOR OBAMA AS SCHEDULED. HE CAN GO BACK TO WASHINGTON AND HELP WITH THE NEGOTIATIONS ON THE ECONOMIC SUMMIT AFTER THE DEBATE.

No way No how   September 26th, 2008 10:17 am ET

Pallin took questions from the press? Did she give more answers like this one that she gave to Katie Couric?
Palin, in a rambling and largely incoherent response, responded,Quote: "That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in.

Annette   September 26th, 2008 10:17 am ET

I hope the American people will not fall for the banana in the tail pipe, which is what the McCain camp is doing. Some of us are not fooled.. The strategy was to slow the Obama camp down, while the McCamp continued to campaign unknowingly. Thank God, Obama had the good judgement to continue campaigning and not fall for the banana in the tail pipe. I want a president that will, at the most, remain firm and consistent, not a potential president that will drift with every wind and double minded in thinking and objectivity. If you stand for nothing you fall for anything.

John McCain is a joke period! He is trying to lead America by traveling the same path Bush has. John McCain is totally out of touch.

You see how quick he bailed out on main street (whom he so call care about) to be apart of wall street (those who he really love because Cindy is one of them).

John has to make sure Cindy 100 millions are secure.

John McCain: DONT YAW BLANK -A- DE -BLANK BLANK MESS WITH OUR STASH!!! I DON'T CARE WHAT HAPPENS WE BETTER CINDY AND I BETTER COME OUT ON TOP WE HAVE TO MUCH STOCK.

Future Vision   September 26th, 2008 10:17 am ET

let's see

John McShame didn't really do anything on Capitol Hill except cause a mess —what if this were the White House

Sarah Failin was making promises to find some instances were John McLame was for regulation to Katie Couric that won't happen

though they took some nice pictures this week with no real meaning behind them except to distract from SLUMPING POLL NUMBERS

David Letterman will have third night of taking JM through the ringer which well is deserved — David got dissed for another pretty face (Couric)

Seems John has more lies than a vegas hooker on a Friday night during the Christmas season

bob   September 26th, 2008 10:16 am ET

This was all a stunt from John McCain. So sad.

Fed Up   September 26th, 2008 10:16 am ET

What a joke. McSame's latest publicity stunt was about as cheap as they get. Running around like a chicken with your head cut off, making knee jerk reaction decisions is not the way to run the country.

President (to be) Obama over the last couple of days has looked very Presidential, while McSame looks like someone running around trying to find his Bingo card.

To add insult to injury, every time Caribou Barbie opens her mouth, she reveals herself to be more incompetent by the second. I saw some of her Couric interview last night and her answer on how being in Alaska gives her foreign policy experience was absolutely incomprehensible. Ms. South Carolina ("U.S. Americans," etc.) would be a more qualified candidate.

Just say NO to Bush 44 and Caribou Barbie.

Go Obama/Biden!!!

RF   September 26th, 2008 10:16 am ET

I hope the American people can see through this "stunt". It is amazing to me how low McCain has stooped, and to think even though I did not agree with many of his politics, I had at least respected him. I have lost that respect for him now, and it is evident that he has lost respect for him self. So sad.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   September 26th, 2008 10:16 am ET

McCain is trying very hard to "look" presidential; however, his actions deny that.

McCain can't get far enough away from Bush and his antics, and the economic crisis, a Bush by-product, is front and center. Then add the Palin factor to this and you have a disaster of epic proportions for McCain. Perhaps Srah can explain the "hockey mom" economic plan here? Or will she have to get back to us later, like she suggested to Katie Couric yesterday when asked to give examples of how McCain would fix things?!

Mrs. McIntosh   September 26th, 2008 10:16 am ET

The American voters deserve to know the truth about McCain suspending his campaign. Why did you make the statement "I am suspending my presidential campaign until the financial crisis has been resolved"? You did not suspend your campaign.

Pat   September 26th, 2008 10:16 am ET

A great exacmple of the Left hand not knowing what the Right hand is doing with the McCain Campaign. Am I surprised? NO McSame has never come across as a man who knows what he is doing! Bravado in Boston   September 26th, 2008 10:14 am ET

Let's just say that the House and Senate cannot agree on a package until AFTER the Autumn Recess. Does that mean that Barack Obama will will by default since he will have no challenger?

Let McCain stay in Washington. Maybe he will have someone show him how to vote when it is time (his voting record is abysmal compared to others who have been campaigning).

Let McCain keep his campaign "suspended" until after the second week in November! Sounds like a plan to me!

Donna   September 26th, 2008 10:14 am ET

The only thing "suspended" was McCain's scheduled appearance on Letterman. Instead of doing that, he went on Katie Couric. And he personally lied to Letterman–telling him he was getting on a plane to Washington.

jim   September 26th, 2008 10:13 am ET

When is a 'suspended campaign' just a blatant POLITICAL STUNT? I actually think McCain is suffering some sort of medical situation and his Karl Rove, et al. Wizard of Oz style cover up is trying to use the Wall Street meltdown as an excuse to get out of debating. But that's just me. I hope McCain is of good health, but none of this makes any sense. For him to skip out on the debate tonight will be suicide. He's already plumetting in the polls. Americans need to wake up and look at these two candidates. It's crystal clear which one of them can handle doing more than one thing at a time.

This man no longer has any honor in my book. And don't get me started on dimwit Palin….

ANGIE   September 26th, 2008 10:13 am ET

Bottom line: Obama has NO resume, even for change!!   September 26th, 2008 10:12 am ET

Are you liberals that stupid?? I think McCain put his campaign on hold in the sense that he is not running around stumping, or willing to attend a debate, which is just an acting display anyway. He wants to stay in DC and help hammer this deal out. Of course the Dems are saying he ruined a deal when he showed up, but there never was a deal. Obama on the other hand was willing to blab via video, and stay down in MI to "study" instead. Hey, I guess he could vote Present by proxy. I can't believe Dems aren't demanding Obama cancel the debate and be there to get this done as a sitting senator, and possible president. Better to stay there and do nothing, which was his first choice. Now he can run back to be there for the debate, which is his first priority, and he gets KUDOS???? You guys are nuts

Ok, after this, the Bridge to Nowhere & the earmark situation, how the bloody hell are these candidates still alive (in a political sense of course)? Why don't people go, "Hey, he's lying. He's a liar. Done"? And if he appears at the debate tonight before they sign a deal, that'll be another lie! Even Bush campaigns weren't this bad.

Annie   September 26th, 2008 10:12 am ET

If John McCain was so concerned about the economic crisis why wasn't he in DC 6 days earlier. And why didn't he read Paulson's recommendations until Tuesday of this week when it was out the Thursday before? And how is he going to help when bills start in the House and they don't have one yet, and he isn't a member of any committee working on it? And why did he suspend his campaign kind of sort of, but not really. It's all for show. John McCain, do you think we are so ignorant that you can actually pull one over on all of us?

When McCain makes the call. If the American people are taken in by John McCain, I guess the country deserves whatever we get. From Palin to pretending to suspend his campaign, McCain has made every reason not to vote for him clear.

It is sad to see members of the Fox McCain News cast speak against Obama for not letting McCain dictate to him on where and how to debate him as well as when he should suspend his campaign.

If McCain made this move from his heart, it would have been done on impulse rather that going on national tv making a speech for political gain. He will try and say any stupid thing to gain in the polls as well as get a few applauds.

Obama/Biden keep campaigning until November 4th 2008

Paco   September 26th, 2008 10:10 am ET

Republican beware of the CNN moderators on this site. They have stripped out all my Republican comments this morning. CNN is biased to the point of cheating bloggers of their right to free speech! This is what you can expect from the Democrats and Obama!

Michael "C" Lorton, Virginia   September 26th, 2008 10:10 am ET

McCain should feel pretty good about calling off the debate. He has got his surrogates firing away, still got the negative ads running in the swing states, and the old Airman is going to take the high road, showing some leadership– country first– spoil the deal; and got everybody hoodwinked. Now where did I put my underwear?

So much for the suspending of the campaign.

I get so annoyed at the Republicans who claim they have "higher" morals and integrity than the democrats, when in truth, we are all alike, we all make mistakes and we are on the most all good people. I have never had an affair or flirtation in my life and have been loyal to my wife for close to 20 years, with no plans to change that. John McCain's treatment of wife #1 was disgraceful and if the story about Sarah and her husbands partner is true, Palin is no better.
