Black Florida congressman apologizes for Palin comments

Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida is apologizing for recent comments about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida is apologizing for recent comments about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

(CNN) – An African-American congressman from Florida is apologizing for his comment that black and Jewish voters should not support Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin because "anybody toting guns and stripping moose don't care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks."

"I regret the comments I made last Tuesday that were not smart and certainly not relevant to hunters or sportsmen," Rep. Alcee Hastings said in a statement issued Monday.

Last week, at a panel on the shared agenda of Jewish and African-American Democrats during the annual conference of the National Jewish Democratic Council, Hastings told attendees what he intended to tell his Jewish constituents about the importance of supporting Sen. Obama in November's presidential election. "If Sarah Palin isn't enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention," Hastings said last week. "Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don't care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through," he added

The comments elicited a swift response from the Republican Jewish Coalition. In a statement issued last week, Matt Brooks, the group's Executive Director, said Hastings "stooped to the worst kind of divisive politics."

"There should be no place in our country for this sort of political discourse. We can constructively disagree on the issues without denigrating others," added Brooks.

In his statement Monday, Hastings said he still backed the sentiment behind his initial remarks. "The point I made, and will continue to make, is that the policies and priorities of a McCain-Palin administration would be anathema to most African Americans and Jews," he said in his statement. "I regret that I was not clearer and apologize to Governor Palin, my host where I was speaking, and those who my comments may have offended."

Last Friday, the NJDC announced the launch of a new campaign of pro-Obama ads that will appear in Jewish newspapers across the country. The first ad in the campaign is timed to coincide with the Rosh Hashanah issues of the publications, and focuses on Obama's support for Israel. "Barack Obama is committed to a safe and secure Israel" and "believes that Israel must be preserved as a Jewish state," the ad reads.

The Republican Jewish Coalition has already launched its own series of election-related ads in Jewish newspapers throughout the country. The latest ad refers to some Obama's advisers as "pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel, and even hostile to America" and states that "You can know a man by the company he keeps."

Being an African American female, when I heard the comment I thought he was going mad. It was very inappropriate and uncalled for. I just hope that when the same kinds of comments are made by the Republicans against Obama that they admit their wrong doing.

In a matter of weeks after a dazzling introduction to the US and the World, Palin has certainly offended millions. I can understand the feelings behind the Representative's comments. Palin offends so many on so many levels. After her Friday interview with Katie Couric and "I'll get back to ya" response, Palin has proven to be utterly unqualified and offensive.

It is true that Palin has nothing in common with Floridians, but this was a stupid comment and the congressman will get the appropriate tongue lashing because of it.

But it doesn't change the fact that McCain's campaign suspension to help solve the economic crisis did NOTHING but create a political buzz around his campaign, and it doesn't change the fact that Palin knows NOTHING about the economy.

Diversions aside, Obama is the only person who, as president, will be able to do anything about this economic crisis. Put it in his hands and lets see what he can do!

I am an African American – You sir are a disgrace! Your comments sounded so stupid and ignorant. You should be voted out and replaced with anyone, even the Republican that ran against you.

This is why our country can not move forward faster with the race issue.
Ignorant people (Both whites and blacks) always say ignorant crap that the rest of have to somehow in our daily lives show is not the views of the rest of us.

For examples: Whites should not be called rasicts because they do not vote for Barack, just like Blacks should not be called rasicts becasue they are voting for him.

American wake up, I say we take all the Blacks and Whites that say stupid crap like this and move them to Alaska to border patrol for the Govenor.

"I regret the comments I made last Tuesday that were not smart and certainly not relevant to hunters or sportsmen," Rep. Alcee Hastings said in a statement issued Monday.

Are you kidding me? Even his "apology" is ignorant....not releveant to hunters or sportsmen" or African-American or Jews, or Women or Candidates of any race, religion, sex. How does someone like that get elected?????

Obama should NOT apologize for this...he isn't responsible for any grown person nor their comments....

Don't be shocked that ignorant comments come from all races because they do...and will forever do so!!!!

It want a nice thing to say... whether or not its true.

Also re: Joe. There is a world of difference between whether or not a comment like this is said by an actual campaign member or a surrogate. Both are bad. But when it comes directly from a campaign it can be taken as a candidate's official position.

Oops! There's an on-going sub-current of racism and sexism in this race. It's the 800 lb gorilla in the room. Most of us have the the good manners not to say stupid things like this, but, unfortunately, many of us may be THINKING these things, which will be a key consideration when the voting booth curtains close, and we are alone with our thoughts and prejudices.

I would hope that Obama's campaign would come out and say this person is not speaking for Obama. I am an Obama supporter, but this kind of rhetoric has no place in the campaign. No matter WHO it comes from, it is nasty, and it should be denounced.

It was a stupid thing for Hastings to say originally. He isn't known for his smarts. Sarah Palin certainly doesn't need any help to make her look bad. McCain's lack of judgment couldn't be more obvious than when Palin wasn't even allowed to talk to CNN, NBC, etc. for comments after the debate. Instead the Republicans marched out people they thought were more competent. So much for McCain's "country first". Barack Obama's VP candidate is actually allowed to go out on his own and actually answer questions.

Sarah Palin apparently isn't capable of dealing with any country she can't see from her window.

Seeing as there are about 12 Jews and 6 African Americans living in Alaska, the congressman has a point.

The entire population of Alaska is less than 800,000 people. That's less people than live in a single square mile of New York.

Governor Palin may not be racist or anti-semitic (in fact most bible thumping Christian Evangelicals have serious Hebrew envy), but she sure doesn't know much about governing large blocks of racially, ethnically, and religiously diverse people.

She can however tell the difference between a Moose and a Caribou at 400 yards.

Yeah, it was tacky and uncalled for-–the last part of it, anyway. Gun toting and moose stripping, however, is true!!! And for the record, distrust and dislike for Caribou Barbie has nothing to do with her gender. It all stems from the fact 1. she is completely unqualified; 2. the vetting process was questionable; 3., if she had any sense she would have politely refused due to her lack of experience 4., the McSame people demand she be treated with respect and deference but then keep her cloistered away from the media. I cannot wait to the debate Thurs. when she brings up all these recent photo-ops with world leaders as foreign policy experience. GO O, and JOE 08

I am not very educated (just high school graduate) but i can easily tell how selfish McCain is – long time back he ignored/dumped his first wife for money, then he choose Palin (cheerleader to boost his campaign) – he ignored amerian people and finally, McCain/Republicans, for poltical reasons, they killed bailout pkg – they dont care even country goes under depression.

After today's failed vote in congress, I think it's time to get all republicans out of office. I can't believe that our representatives, facing such an important piece of legislature, could get in front of the cameras and indicate that their feelings were hurt, so they let this bill fail. That just shows you what the republicans mean when they say America first. Yeah right. Boy do we need change, and not the kind that Sen. McCain gives lip service to. Governor Palin has an authentic moral center and genuine American values! She relates very well to everyday people and has an intuitive sense that puts her in touch with America's pulse! :)

It is difficult for all the "you grease my palm and I'll grease yours" manipulative, lying politicians to accept the real thing! She is the same generation as Obama but she doesn't have to fake it!

    Don't underestimate Governor Sarah Palin!

This is very interesting. Talk about a double standard in this Country. If a white legislator (particularly a Republican) had made the statement Hastings did, it would be on the front of every major paper and there would be cries of outrage from the NAACP, LULAC, and every other minority special interest group within the United States. All Hastings has to do if toss out an off-the-cuff "apology" and all's well. I'm sure Mr. Hasting's constituents are pleased with his demonstrated ignorance and lack of civility. How come those whose response begins with "I am an African American" never use a hyphen, as if to say the two are equal, and they always put Africa first? I sense so much disaffection that I wonder what is the point of listening to anything they have to say. They communicate a lack of concern about anyone's welfare but their own and those whose skin color is the same as theirs I suppose that could be taken to mean one of us is racist, but I never begin a response with my skin color, or any euphemism for it.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and his top aides took credit for building a winning bailout coalition – hours before the vote failed and stocks tanked.

The rush to claim he had engineered a victory now looks like a strategic blunder that will prolong the McCain’s campaign’s difficulty in finding a winning message on the economy.

Shortly before the vote, McCain had bragged about his involvement and mocked Sen. Barack Obama for staying on the sidelines.

I cannot take people seriously when they are saying such hurtful things. I have many friends with whom I differ politically, yet we are friends. I grew up in the South. And I know and knew men (not too many women) , both black and white who hunted. This does not make them bad people. They just have a different way of life. Many people in Florida fish. Many people in Alaska hunt. Many people in New York City take the subway. Many people in Texas drive pick-up trucks. Just accept the differences, people. And respect each other. She is the worst type of person. One who expects to be able to disrespect anyone she chooses but cries when anyone hits back. She also has a very low regard for ethics with all her antics in Alaska. I have never seen a more pathertic VP pick.....

Reverse racist this guy is. If you're white and you don't vote for Obama some Obama supporters call you a racist. But if you're African American and you vote for Obama because he's an African American you're not a racist? Pot calling the kettle black here.. When something like 90% of African Americans voted for Obama because he's African American, that's called being racist too.

If a republican said anything like this you same left wing crazies would be hootin and hollerin like it was the end of the world. hell you all have freaked out on things being said that wasnt anywhere close to how dispicable this was. along with Hastings you all should shut your traps, you race baiting fools.

Look at where blacks in America were 144 years ago, then 44 years ago and then today. Just 67 years ago, Jews in Europe were being herded like cattle to their deaths. We have made progress in racial and religous tolerance here in America, and there still work to be done. Comments like this shouldn't be tolerated. Yes, I am a white democrate and I'm voting for McCain, and color of skin has nothing to do with it.

    Hypothetical question:

If Palin had made a speech that basically said do not vote for Obama because he is black, what would have happened?

The comments by Hastings or any comment from either side like it have no place in this country, let alone in this political race.

Let's move forward and address the economy.......

If we do not – then none of our comments here will matter anyway

These days the republicans are very sensible, you can hurt their feelings very easy. Poor kids!
On the other hand their leadership and McCain LIES about Obama every day without any scruple.

Today Republican congressmen put their feelings first before the interest of the country.

The fact that Palin who has no experience with foreign policy, has sided with big oil companies, and has used her position to fire her brother in law is very scary. Why on earth would anyone want her to be president? It is like Matt Damon said "It is like a Walt Disney movie gone mad!" I'm sorry that Hastings used the words he used, but I do agree with him no one should vote for McCain/Palin.

Rep. Hastings has been, is and always will be a MORON. Not only does he make stupid and hateful comments, he can't even make them grammatically correct! However, to those posters who are congratulating him or saying that it's no big deal- shame on you! I truly believe that CNN has a core of people who go on these blogs with different names because it's almost always anti Bush, anti McCain, anti Palin. This has been rumored before and it really does seem like a planned and concerted effort on the part of CNN blog sites, including the Cafferty File. Prove me wrong.

everyone is apologizing in fear of losing votes.
god, if we all could just speak the truth FIRST, these type of remarks would be like water off a ducks back.
Palin leaves herself open to remarks by perpetrating (yeah, I used perpetrating intentionally) her suzie homemaker – moose killing babe persona via the media.

O, PLEASE, as much racist crap the Republicans say and do everyday in this country. The republicans are all over this country now putting in rules in some places that won't allow blacks and hispanics to vote in key states. Here's some of the things the republicans are doing: if you have an Obama shirt on when you go vote, you can't vote, 2: in Mich. they tried stopping people from voting if your house was in (foreclosure) 3: if your ID didn't match the address on the voters list you can't vote, 4: sending out mailers, so when you fill it out and send it back, it goes to another address and they change your vote,5: some places in Florida, their telling people they have warrants so they can't vote, so on and so on. So PLEASE, spare me the BS. By the way, he shouldn't had said that, LOL

Inappropriate comments are inappropriate regardless of whether you are white or black, democrat or repulican. How is there any connection between how she spends her free time hunting, etc. and how she would vote on an issue strickly relevant to jews or african-american? I think all of our politics should be addressed to ALL people – regardless of race, religion, etc.

It's great to hear someone step up and say "my vote is going to be based solely on the color of a candidates skin, and you should too." I'm undecided right now, but the constitution gives us the right to bare arms. Seeing as how Obama taught the constitution and claims to firmly believe in it, I'm sure he's slapping his forehead right now and wondering why on earth this A%$ hole is throwing his name around.

Yeah this congressman should have not made this comment but it's all said and done and he apologized for the comment. But more importantly Obama and VP Joe Biden are going to win especially with the defeat of the Bailout Bill and the Dow Jones plunging. This only hurts the Republicans in the President race and helps the Democrats. Obama and Joe Biden for President and Vice President!!!

That is a racist statement and if any white person would have made a statement of that latitude. rev jj and al sharp would be asking for resignation. all this mixed presidential nominee is doing is putting this country further apart in its racial devide. I hope and pray he doesn't get in office. i fear if something would happen to him. all hell would break loose. and then where would our country be.
