WASHINGTON (CNN) — The House of Representatives Monday rejected a $700 billion plan to bail out the financial system, putting a roadblock in front of the largest government intervention in the market since the Great Depression.

Watch: GOP blames Pelosi

Republicans and Democrats blamed each other for the failure of the bill, which President Bush had urged Congress to approve.

Watch: GOP 'punished the country'

It was intended to reassure financial markets by giving the government the power to buy "illiquid assets" such as bad mortgages.

I am glad it failed

70 Billion for AIG, 170 Billion for the stimulus package, 200 billion for the
Iraq war, and 700 billion for a stimulus package…..in one year.

Thats over a trillion dollars and I all I get is a tax bill in return. Why aren't some government officials and wall street CEO's in prison??

What a totally expected ending to the bush/republican administration.

Nondis Wright   September 29th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

THIS SO SO POLITICAL. None of these people in congress really care about the people of this country. Those that do, don't seemed to have the guts to stand up and say enough, lets clean the mess up and then play the blame game later. They don't want to work together. I heard the Speaker of the Houses speech. It was her saying enough. It sounded to me like she was saying all of us need to be ashamed of ourselves and we need to get this taken care now and lick our wounds later. Congress really don't want to work together on this because they are too busy miniplulating for positions so they can be the hero. This is like watching kids fighting to get the one-ups. They care only about their hides and if that means miss leading the people, so be it. I say fire them all.

How many people won't be able to attend college in the spring when they find out they can't get private student loans anymore? 137 lenders have stopped lending for student loans as of yesterday and 33 lenders no longer make private loans. Thanks america.

Well time to open up the soup kitchens. My grandfather worked in the mines in Picher, Oklahoma during the great depression. He made very little money, but he tried to feed his family and another widow woman with a lot of little kids. They would boil meat, from the cow my grandfather slaughtered, give the broth to the kids, but one little kid died of malnutrition. Why are Americans so selfish? Bail them out and then regulate the hell out of them. Why is it we never learn from our mistakes? Arrogance maybe?

republicans that think that they are voting against it because they do not agree are full of it… they are doing this to WIN in november.

WAKE UP!!!!!!! Dems voted for it cause the GOP told them they were voting too, then they turned around and voted no to make them look bad. THIS IS ABOUT OUR MONEY NOT THEIR STUPID SEATS IN THE HOUSE!

Why is it that we the voters can't be given a few details on why this bail out is needed and is this the only way to do the job. How much money was made when the mortgage scam was working? What is the total of mortgage failure? I believe that some fat cats just can't wait for the goverment to put up so much money they already know how to gobble it up.

Yes I would vote no as well if 20% were being given to ACORN! Why is this group even considered? This is so scary? Before we elect Mr. Obama we better see what ACORN really stands for, other than uprisings. Every politician in Washington knew the potential of what could happen here. Many books were written over last 20 years warning of this. So the democrats can quit blaming the Republicans and vice versa. The scary part bailout or not. Oil first, then groceries, then banks and Insurance. The change Mr. Obama wants is what might finally do America in with us on the ropes. Before you vote not knowing you should consider. What if? and a big what if?My hat is off to the house republicans. Because you have to stand for something or you'll fall for anything the song says.

Thanks a lot republicans, yes those of you who made the great exudous from the inner cities to the gated suburbs in your $2,$3$4oo,000 houses that you couldn't really afford and made this mess for everybody. For using your lines of credit on those houses to rack up enormous debt to live the over empahsized american dream, now what? Because of you I and people like me who dream of having a modest home, just a place to call ours will never be.You say that blacks destroyed the inner cities from our exudous from the outskirts of town to the city, now look at what you caused by leaving the inner cities to the outskirts, the SUBURBS.What goes around comes around,Thanks a Lot.

Pandering congressional buffoons.

No, I don't feel we should bail out Wall Street but this is so partisan that our economy is doomed. God Help us all. Partianship and Racism will doom this country. It's all political.

trying to blame the democrats madam speaker speach for the loss is just as what you can expect , this country failing becuase of a speach , the republicans played the poeple for suckers , letting the poeple belive they where for it when they looked for anything to put a stop to this bill, to save there own jobs who are at great risk as the public knows it is this adminastration for the last 8 years , the republicans gave this president anything he wanted , only now while trying to save there jobs are they saying that what the public has said for 8 years that this president had lied to this country many time and got us into a war that seems it will never end, yet these republicans still stand up for all his lies till now , they are trying to save there jobs ,but at what cost to the american poeple, the democrats also need to push the 94democrats who voted against this bill , and get them in line , if this country does have a real meltdown now it will fall on those who failed this country, this bill is really not a stock market bail out it is a american bail out. if it takes just one persons words to bring this coutry to its knees, then god be with us and god be with america. ken

geraldine   September 29th, 2008 2:56 pm ET

Good. time to start undoing the failed policy of Bill Clinton that forced Fannie and Freddie to issue subprimes to begin with, and the failed policy that has allowed it to fester since then.

No matter how popular it is to Socialists on this board, blaming Republicans is not a strategy. Throwing $700B at a problem without debate or thorough evaluation isn't either.

People - Vote for change! This is no way to run a country.

Scott   September 29th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

Thank goodness some snaity came to the process.

Nancy and Harry once again go against the will of the people. When the people reject the bailout bill 100-1 how can you ever vote for it. And then she balmes the GOP. She could not even bring home her own party. They know the people do not want to use their tax $$ to artificially prop up a stock price.

They are both shining examples of why congress has an alltime low approval rating. Terrible leadership right now by the Dems.

Take a breath and let the markets work it out.

Tony   September 29th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

A victory for Capitalism!!!

I've heard nothing but vapid excuses for this bailout. The threat of recession is not a reason to inject Socialism into our economy. Let the bad banks fail and the people who bought houses they couldn't afford lose them so that our economy will return to equilibrium where it belongs. I don't want one cent of my federal tax dollars to go towards bailing these people out.

ralph   September 29th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

I noticed that this bill had greated dem support than gop support. Even now the GOP want to play the opposition party. This is just like the immigration bill all over again. Looks like Obama will have to play the role of FDR instead of JFK

Elizabeth from York, PA   September 29th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

Do you people who are shouting with glee even realize what this means? Do you have a clue?

It means the company you work for may have to close if they have no line of credit for payrolls and improvement projects. It means no credit to buy a car which will put thousands of auto workers out of work eventually. It means your hometown bank might fail.

I hated the fact that this had to be done but without it we are heading for disaster.

You people just don't get it.

kendall   September 29th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

Give the money to current homeowners to paydown thier mortages, and vie for a better interest rate to keep them in thier home. or give it to every man, woman and child, and watch the housing slump stop dead in it's track. Obviously it was to bail out top execs and not the main street tax payors

No Hillary = No Obama   September 29th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

The Congress of the USA has now cost Americans their hard earned monies, depleting IRA's that have taken years to build up. This is immoral. Pelosi and company need to tender their resignations ASAP.

Robert in Virginia   September 29th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Republicans want us to believe that their feelings were hurt and that is why they could not produce their half of the votes. BS!!!! Is the the end result McCain went to Washington to accomplish?

Shawn   September 29th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

I'm glad this unconstitutional bill went down. Of course, this just means the next try will have more trinkets on it to attract the remaining necessary 13 votes or so. No public money for private problems! We must take our medicince, but I have faith that when Americans remember who we are, we will find our way, this is not it. THIS IS NOT IT.

Vicki   September 29th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

I do not believe most of the average Americans that are so proud of this vote realize that their retirements are tied to the stock market. When they get the letter that says their retirement is gone, then they will not be so proud of this vote. Also when they cannot use their credit cards, use their ATM's, or when they get the "pink slip" because their boss could not get the credit he/she needed to meet the payroll. This was not a bailout of Wall Street, but a plan that would help rescue the whole economy of the United States.

V. Sheldon   September 29th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

As the ship sinks, i hear the Republicans singing"Nearer My God to Thee"
This is appalling. If the economy goes down, i have one big fat finger and it is pointing in the direction of the Republican Party.

susan   September 29th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

I am not sure what the answer is with regard to the bailout, but I do know this: last week a bank I had a significant CD deposit in went belly up, mutual funds actually lost money, small business owners were unable to get short term loans to make payrolls or service equipment, the dow just dropped 600 points, foreign banks are tanking. This is the fault of deregulation, absolutely. George Bush is not to be trusted, for sure. But if this problem isn't addressed, we will all be hurting. This is not just about the wall street big wigs.

It is time to stop playing politics and educate the American people just how this situation affects them…and where we are headed if this situation continues.

R.I.F.   September 29th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

The media is doing a terrible job of explaining this bill. Unfortunaltly too many people think that this is just some sort of corportate giveaway using tax money and it's far more than that. If banks can't make loans then companies (larger or small) can't borrower and then they can't borrower they close up and then people lose their jobs…period. This money is not going to some CEOs country club dues. It's going to companies to free up liquidity which is needed. People who are against this bill will soon see that $700 billion is/was a small price to pay to keep this country out of a depression.

edweena   September 29th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Although I'm Canadian and we may feel the effect of this American mess, I sure as hell am happy to be right where I am. Times of GREAT trouble is coming to America! It ain't gonna be pretty!

Bin Laden's 1996 Declaration of War, stated, "The financial and the economical situation of the country and the frightening future in the view of the enormous amount of debts and interest owed by the government; this is at the time when the wealth of the Ummah being wasted to satisfy personal desires of certain individuals!! while imposing more custom duties and taxes on the nation." Frank Raines, Daniel Mudd, James Johnson, Barack Obama, Maxine Waters, Gregory Meeks, Lacy Clay, Artur Davis, Charles Schuner.

We may see unemployment like during the Great Depression, and LOTS more people will be losing their homes. Talk about your government (in)action.

As Goldman's chief, Paulson received an $18.7 million cash bonus for the first half of 2006, and in 2005 he was the highest paid chief executive officer on Wall Street, reaping $38.3 million in salary, stock and options. He also accumulated 3.23 million shares of Goldman's common stock worth $492 million, plus restricted shares worth $75.2 million and options to purchase 680,474 shares, according to a Goldman regulatory filing on July 2, 2006.

No one person needs or deserves this much money when hundreds of thousands are losing their hard earned retirement funds because the a corporate titans such as Paulson decided to gamble with the money we've ALREADY given them… now they want more of our tax dollars to bail themselves out??? Bravo Speaker Pelosi on your comments that swayed the needed Nay votes this evening to NOT give these greedy corporate titans one more dime of our money.

Joyce, nj   September 29th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

As painful as that amount appears to be - it is a MUST. Or we tumble down to depression.

How can they play politics with our future?

The provisions of the bill are fine by me. There will be strict regulations, there will be an oversight board, there will be no parachutes. More importantly, the money will not be released all at once. it will be in stages and Paulson would have to face and prove to congress that he needs the remaining amount.

I say that's fair enough. How selfish could these politicians get?

I did not support the bailout because I felt Bush and his appointees Paulson were devoid of integrity, economic knowledge and I was suspicious of their motivations. It was too reminiscent of the run up to the Iraq war. I was extremely distrustful of the bailout.

However, today I hear that Warren Buffet has stated that the bailout is absolutely necessary, so, albeit, reluctantly, I do now support the bailout bill.

ts   September 29th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Chrissy you are right!!!!!! Why don't they give the money to the working taxpayer so we can build up the economy. We shouldn't bailout the rich folks. Did they think about the american taxpayer before this happen NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so why should we think about them. If everyone in Washington really care about the americans they should just give us the money so we can pay off our debt.

The Smart Guys within the failed companies should never have been issuing out mortgages to people who obviously could only afford to get in the homes but not stay "pay" in the homes. Getting in with no money or low down payments and not a shred of evidence to show future payment stability. This is what has caused the majority of this fiasco. Let the big wigs of all these companies fork back over those millions in bonuses to fix this !!

Roaddog   September 29th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

I don't think even OB has a plan. That was evident in the debate.

Tired Elephant   September 29th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Let's not be so fast to dump all this on the GOP. What about those Democrats such as Peter Welch of VT, who did so? The fact is that too many of the "no" votes caved to pressure from home.

No the bill isn't perfect and I don't like some parts of it, but drying up such things as student loans and much else solves nothing.

Remember in November, regardless of party.

marianna   September 29th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

NO BAILOUT - that's a very good news - that means some of the reps have some decency left - I want NONE of my tax dollars used to pay fat cats' bonuses or otherwise support unresponsible borrowers and other crooks.

A referendum on bailout on Nov.4

who wants bailout - vote Dems

who does not - vote Repubs

Here we go . . .   September 29th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

I had to laugh at this outcome. I don't know if I should be happy or sad.

I am sad because I don't really see any hope of recovery and I am afraid we are all going to have to hit rock bottom before things get better.

I am happy, because if I have to shell out $700 Billion I am screwed and the crooks are A OK. But now we are both equally screwed.

YEE HAW. I am ok with losing my 20K in Stock so long as the fat CEO's lose their billions.

Obama/Biden '08, '12   September 29th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

As is, the bill does nothing much to curb Golden Parachutes or limit executive pay. A large chunk of the money will go to foreign banks, which American taxpayers may never see again. I don't want to bail out rich, greedy people. That is not "Country First" - that's "Rich People Today, Tomorrow, and Always."

No Thank You.

The bill is better than Paulson first presented, but it's still a giveaway to greed. Make the wealthy pay for it.

Dale, Kentucky   September 29th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

GOOD!
"WE THE PEOPLE….." do not want to bail out the Wall Street gang.
Let them pay the price for their own mess.

'Problems can not be solved by the same level of thinking that created them'!

So…why do we need change….Bush/McCain/Poulson/Republican Wealth created this mess with deregulation 9i.e. - no oversite or accountability)so why would that mindset not be in a position to solve this crisis…..

Glitch   September 29th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

@Greg, San Francisco, CA:

This mess was caused by measures enacted under Clinton and his HUD director, not "house republicans"

HMcGee   September 29th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

I swear I've lost of all respect for the Republicans including John McCain, who I used to kind of like. Every time something goes wrong, they spend all of their time pointing fingers at the Democrats. The house leaders are on CNN now blaming Nancy Pelosi's speech for their own inability to get legislation through. They are saying that it changed some of their votes. Are they really so weak and petty that a speech will keep them from doing what they thought was the right thing to do before they heard that speech? In the workplace of the average American, results are expected and shifting the blame to others is a recipe for termination. These people need cut the **** and do their jobs.

arnold   September 29th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Worse thing to do is put another Democrat at the top of the worst Democratic controlled congress this country has ever had. And he's not even a Democrat, worse yet, a liberal socialist.

Vincent , Conroe,TX   September 29th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Today is a great day for democracy. With the house defeat of the bailout bill, it shows 'We the People' still rule. I am not an economist and don't know what will happen, but neither can a majority of experts say what will happen either. To shun debate for expedience and fear mongering is the calling card for this complete failure of an administration. Some experts said not to rush into this, and there are possibly other options to fix the problem without costing the taxpayers 700 Billion. The congress now can take its time and do this properly, listening to all options and proceeding…or they can just go back on vacation.

Xavier, Saint Louis, Missouri   September 29th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Thanks to Bush, McCain and the GOP, our economy is in bad shape! How can anyones possibly vote Republican?!

END THE DRAMA, VOTE OBAMA!

We are in BIG trouble when the advice of Warren Buffett is ignored. All of the BUMS in washington should be thrown out. The irony of the situation is that WWII got us out of the Great Depression and the Iraq war has gotten us into this one…..Shame on Bush, McCain and the repubs for "The Great Depression #2″

alex   September 29th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Socialism for the rich, capitolism for the poor.

Unless the market is good, in which case, give the rich a tax break.

Oh, and even if the market is bad and has to rely on socialism to recover, give the rich a tax break anyway.

That's the legacy that George W. Bush and John McCain want to leave America.

Sue   September 29th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Does anyone besides me think this financial disaster has all been contrived by Bushies Big Business Buffoons to panic the nation then provide their candidates with the appropriate "insider" information to "fix" their contrived failure at just the right moment to win the election?

Nik   September 29th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Now that John McCain stated he's for the bailout, it will be interesting to see how he and his campaign spin this to say he was against it. I don't think the average American understands the effects of not stabilizing our financial market. I saw Cramer and Mitt Romney this morning and they both agreed that its the duty of the government to stabilize the economy and preserve the currency. When Americans hear their tax dollars are being used to "bailout" the market, the negative connotation supersedes the need for action. When you read comments like the one noted above by "James", you almost feel sorry for those Americans that want to point the blame rather than shared responsibility for both parties is called for. Division seems to be the American way.

Look it up   September 29th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

People really need to start looking up the facts…..Why was ACORN even in the bill (which republicans had taken out). Look up Obama and ACORN! Why did the politicians have to mudd it up with their junk to kill it. Nancy Pelosi is the reason why this was killed, because she had to open her mouth before the vote. Also, look at the numbers, there were a lot of democrats who voted no. People, please start looking up the facts, do not be ignorant google it!

Ken in Dallas   September 29th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

So much for House Republican "leadership." They need to send Boner and Blunt back to the minors.

It's now easy to see why McCain didn't want the credit for putting this deal together; it wasn't.

dave in mn   September 29th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Do the Republicans really think that this will get them re-elected? For the first time ever, I'm voting all democrat.

Truth Hurts   September 29th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Honestly, I think all these idiots in Washington are the same.

I was a Democrat, but I'm done with dems. I loved how Congress was investigating steriods in baseball for the last two years instead of doing anything about gas prices.

Democrats have let our economy go to crap just as much as the Republicans. You better wake up people… They would love to throw our economy under the bus just to get a president elected.

All this could have been avoided, but I guess Hillary was just promoted a gimmick when she was arguing to freeze interest rates 2 years ago on subprime loans and give us a gas tax holiday.

Honestly, neither Obama or McCain get it.

But, I will vote McCain because at least he has a record of bucking the system. Obama is just a "yes" man with empty rhetoric.

JP   September 29th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

White EX REPUBLICAN Texas Woman FOR OBAMA   September 29th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

James— Seriously. Where have you been for the last eight years? It's the Republican administration that got us in to this mess. Why do you think McCain calls/called himself the "great deregulator". If you think this crisis just popped up in the last 19 months, you're crazy. This is the end result of 8 years of laissez-faire Bush deregulated banking industry economics.
Oh, and if you've got a 401K or other retirement account, KISS IT GOOD BY!

Georgia Gal   September 29th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Interesting how Obama is around to make a statement, but McCain is nowhere to be found.

charlie   September 29th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

I'm proud of those who voted no on this bill. Those politicans showed courage to take the political fall out for the short term loss. Yes, the Dow fell 600 points!! Yikes. However, this bail out would make things worse.

You can't put a fire out with more fire. Recall Bush said we got into this mess with too much credit, now they want to put in more credit. This bill would've saved investments short term but devalue the dollar by a lot. Many POOR AND FIXED INCOME PEOPLE could not keep up with the inflation. Sure your investments might've not fallen as much given a bail out but how would most people afford $6 gas and higher food prices. What would happen in long term would be people would buy less stuff because of inflation and everyone would suffer. Supply economics don't work they didn't work during the Great Depression and they won't work now.

Mark Ferbet   September 29th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

This is proof-positive that Congress needs to see a big change come November. Both sides are guilty of pandering, and are encapable of any sort of compromise.

I think they need to stay in session until a compromise is reached.

Keyon Thomas   September 29th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

This is my very issue with republicans. They fail to lead then shift the blame. don't get me wrong I don't like either party as a whole but come on. Dems delivered a huge chunk of the votes and the republicans couldn't come tot he table. Then they come on camera on every major news outlet and blame Nancy Pelosi for the failure to perform. Republicans stop blaming and start performing. Your party doesn't like the plan so your party needs to fix it. In the end we are all Americans so lets look out for Americans and come together as Americans and bring forth a solution that works.

Krystyn   September 29th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Don't people understand that companies, NOT the greedy ones, are not able to make payroll right now and can't borrow because of the liquidity issue??? And that means they'll have to let workers go because they can't pay them?

People like you and me. People who aren't to blame for subprime mortgages or who aren't mired in credit card debt…people are paying their bills and staying above water right now.

So because of our politicians using this to play games (thats YOU House Republicans) we could ALL suffer?

Thats ok with you? If so, what kind of American are you?

This isn't the time for ideology. Its time for REALITY and action.

linda n carolina   September 29th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

I say let the Republicans redo the bill themselves since they have all the answers…….the blame game is on. I say we vote them all out in Nov. We'll see now if this really was a crisis or not.

Tiff of lithia springs   September 29th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

I hope the republicans don't think this is going to change the polls or get them more seats in Congress. I'm not impressed by them attacking Pelosi's leadership. They need to be lookin' at McPain and Failin'

Reality check   September 29th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Pelosi is a failure to the American people and especially the democratic party. She sealed her fate when she interferred with the democratic caucuses and primaries with the super delegates (and the fact she has done absolutely nothing since becoming house speaker.)

Just another notch on the tombstone that looms over her career. Obama would not (not couldnt — wouldnt) unite the democratic party either. They are two sides of the same coin.

I work in Home Equity for a National Bank and our company is in good standing. Let these corporations fail that preyed on those that couldn't afford their loans. Why should I have to bail them?

MD, TX   September 29th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Please publish the names of the 94 democrats who voted against this bill. They need to be congratulated for having the courage to vote against something that was truely against the best interests of the United States (even though their reasoning was probably faulty).

anton   September 29th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

thanks goodness it failed. people forget we don't have those 700 billion, that would have been an astronomic IOU to our children. you don't spen what you don't have. This crisis is here because we over borrowed in the first place, as individuals and as a nation. borrowing even more would just make things even worse. so please stop wining , thighten up your belt, stop living like a rockstar, and lets go through this already

Chris Moses   September 29th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Bailout a company??? This is not what needs to be done!! Take the 700 billion and give it to every tax payer over 18 years old. Thats over $200,000 for each person. If that is done then alot of people can pay their homes, cars etc off. And anyone who does not own a home could buy one if they want. Start at the bottom with this then the top will profit!!!

Nick - Arlington, VA   September 29th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Nobody wants to have a bailout but the ramifications of doing NOTHING will come back to hurt us way worse…..this is ridiculous…the republicans failed to get the number of votes that they promised and now we have nothing as the DOW plunged 700 points at one point….Congress is holding politics above our economy….insane.

It is refreshing to see that a majority (50+percent) of our represenatives actually are listening to the people which they represent! NO BAILOUT! If our country has access to that kind of money it should be used to bail out the adverage taxpayer who because the the economy is head over heels in debt and wondering how they can afford to live up to their responsibilities. If the adverage taxpayer pays off his debts, that would be agreat way to put money back into the economy. There are other options to bailing out Wall Street.

Marcelia Keene   September 29th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

I am furious! Our congress is just as incapable and incompetent as the CEO's of these major corporations that have gotten us into this mess. Then, being on the brink of catastrophy, we ask our congressional leaders to compromise and come up with a plan to save our collapsing economy — and they fail. Then just like the CEO's they continue to be paid by their constituency. So, they're laying back and collecting on their golden parachutes while we have to pay for both of these failures. WHEN DOES IT STOP???!!! They should give up their phones and holidays, and lunches and dinners until they are able to get in a room and come up with a compromised plan that serves both the economy and the people on Main Street. That's what they getting paid to do.

Mnay people on here dont understand the dynamics of how money flows and how this will affect them. Its not about bailing out CEO's and courrupt coompany's, its about getting YOU - the people - to not be at mercy by these results. David, Silver Spring, MD   September 29th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Utterly bizarre to see conservative Republicans refusing to vote for the bill that their conservative Republican administration advanced and that the very policies they champion caused.

Almost as bizarre as seeing those same Republicans touting concern for the "taxpayer" as the reason they're not supporting the bill.

Meanwhile, my retirement investments are going in the toilet.

pat huntington   September 29th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

this is clearly 100% the Republican Party's fault…because of their deregulation of everything in the financial sector, banks and lending institutions entered into risky subprime mortgages and used those same risky mortgages to back so called mortgage backed securities, so that all we needed was one part of this house of cards to fall, and the rest of the economy goes with it!

This is all the Republican's fault! How dare they!

It is amazing to me that the Republicans would poison the economic bail out package. Using Nancy Peloi's speech as the reason to defeat this bill in the House is the most childish reasoning I've ever heard. People will be losing their life's savings, their retirements, businesses will fail…all because the ego of the Republican congressman is too great. Shame on all of them…I hope they all lose their jobs!

Nancy Pelosi's chickens are coming home to roost. For two years she has shut out the house republicans, not allowed their proposals to come to the floor or even get debated. This may not be all bad. We needed a market correction. We will recover, we are americans and if anything else we are resilient. I have lost money in this collapse and I don't want a bandaid. I want a long term solution. So much for a quick fix. The President and Congress are to blame. I the Democrats thought regulation was such a problem they sure dropped the issue like a lead weight. Hmm, why maybe we should ask all the poltiicians who headed many of these problem companies in the past. Life is still good.. Ny momma always said walls are mean't to be climber and we will climb this one too.

You all have done the american public a serious dis-service.

Why should we bail out all these rich ceo's and politicians involved with them. I don't see the Bush Adm. offering to bail out the little guys who have lost their jobs and homes. They are the ones in need!!!

Long Time Coming   September 29th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Well, fortunately I am not tied up in the market, but in all honesty, people need to take a long hard look at themselves regarding this whole mess. We've stopped being critical of our leaders, and as long as there was promise of money on the short term, everyone drank the punch.

This is exactly the problem with deregulation. And if you think it is a Dem versus Republican thing, you are equally in the fog. Good ole Billie Boy Clinton was just as much a deregulator as Bushie. They all have to pay back those big financial institutions that gave them so much money. In fact probably partially your money.

It really is time for us, the people, to take back what is rightfully ours. Forget about political parties, those simply keep us fighting amonst ourselves, while both parties rob us blind.

Gee, Alabama   September 29th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

The market will work it self out. I just do not have anything to loose. No investements, no stocks, bonds, savings, etc, so as far as I am concerend nothing changes for me as I have been living pay day to pay day for some 2 years now and I am a Cheif Petty Officer in the US Navy folks!!

Jeff DuShane   September 29th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Enough is enough! This partisan game in Washington has to end. We may have differences, but we seem to be represented by the far right and the far left. This is a nation of gray, not of black and white, and our representatives should realize that and learn to work together.

This is RIDICULOUS if this is truly as extreme as they have been advertising for the economy.

"The Democratic party clearly wants to delay this measure for political gain."

Democrats are to blame? Really?

60% of Democrats voted for the bill. Less than 33% of Republicans supported it. While I don't doubt that many Democrats would love to see McCain suffer in the polls, the blame is largely on the House Republicans.

Each and every one of those no votes should be written into the articles of impeachment for those individual lawmakers as I am 100% certain not one of them offered a comprehensive alternative to this bill.

A victory for Capitalism!

If she thinks it's a good idea to point out that he's been staring down dictators since she was in second grade, well that's just hilarious and it makes her look naive, confused and terribly mistaken in regard to what the American people really care about. Experience matters, but judgment does too. McCain has experience without judgment. Obama has judgment without much experience. Biden has both. Palin has neither.

Republicans are playing the blame game as usual… blaming this on Pelosi. They are playing Republican politics, not being able to think for themselves and mainly not taking care of the American People…..

McBush, and the Republican leaders have to take a long look at themselves before they go to bed tonight….

Hey, Where's some of this real change we,ve been hearing the dems spew for over a year. This was their big chance to show how america should be run and Pelosi, Reid and Co. can't even get a majority of their own party to back this bill.

Listen up, we don't want to turn over the checkbook to the same group who had a hand in creating thi
