Bush should stay out of this. It all happened under his watch. Most Democrats and Republicans agree he has been perhaps the worst President in the history of the U.S.

Any comments he makes are only non-productive. No one takes anything he says seriously or with any authority anymore. After all, there were no WMD's in Iraq. He's a President with a low rating who has lost trust with the American public (and those around the world as well).

Hey, there is a perfect opportunity in the upcoming election Nov.4 to include a referendum question on a national level. The question is:

Do you support a bailout of banking industry using $700B of taxpayer money?

YES or NO ?

Simple like this. We'd see in 5 weeks what WE THE PEOPLE think about all this.

Affraid to post a question to the public to learn the truth?

Look who blocked ALL efforts to reform fannie mae and freddie mac. Better yet, look who has taken the most $$ in donations from these cesspools of subprime stupidity.

Try these names on for size: Dodd, Frank, and OBAMA!

So now we get to put a $700 billion bandaid on our economy under the premise that the taxpayer will make money on this investment--look at the price of real estate on a historic, inflation adjusted basis (google it!). GREAT INVESTMENT!!! Don't just buy high--buy at a level so astronomically high that it guarantees failure. Now that sounds like the government hard at work with your taxpayer dollars!

It looks like the conservatives don't want to take responsibility for their financial mess.

It is time to tax the rich and to tax the social churches that advocate politics.

The party that is in office failed us. The party that is to keep them accountable failed us too. Too little too late. We are now dealing with this bailout as a necessary evil. Perhaps it is time to get a viable third party going in America. Maybe by 2016 one will emerge. It could be fiscally responsible yet generous where it needs to be, morally strong, environmentally friendly, and not controlled by corporations or wacky liberal or conservative lobbyists. Let's take the BEST from each party-if there is anything left-and shed the rest of the chaff.

I am so exhausted by my once-proud Republican party.

Obama camp: Please don't screw this up. My party needs a royal butt kicking to force it to own up to some hard truths about the last 8 years. To get back to solid, fiscally-conservative values. To shake off the influence of the far right. To govern honorably and competently. To rattle the sword sparingly.

Ironically, Mr. McCain was exactly what we needed about 8 years ago. But the Senator I respected has been eaten by the machinery. God bless you, Mrs. Palin: You are a wonderful woman, and you have a bright future in my party. But for Senator McCain to claim you qualified for the Vice Presidency is simply not rational.

Mr. Obama: I have my bowl of granola ready, and I might even hug a tree. I'm going to give you tax-and-spend liberals a chance; help us fix our country.

Virginia Voter September 29th, 2008 10:04 am ET

US Population = approx. 301 billion
Bailout Bill = $700 billion appropriated

Simple Math:

700,000,000,000 / 300,000,000,000 = $2.3 per person in the US…

Maybe the bailout isn't that bad?

Actually there is 301 million people in the US based on the Census done in 2000. The cost to each man, woman, and child would $2,300.

No bailout. This is wrong...let the failed corporations go down the drain...they deserve it! I would suggest that people get on their telephones and call all politicans even remotely involved in this sham. Wake up America....these Republicans have taken advantage of us for too long, they must be stopped. Hopefully, everyone out there will vote Democrat come November.

For all of those who say this is soley the Republicans fault, and that it's because of policy changes they enacted in the last 8 years.

Your wrong, this has been building since Clinton's terms, when dems argued that requring 2+ years of financial information was descrimnating and preventing people from buying homes (homes that we've now found out, they couldn't afford).

Add to it, relaxed regulation laws enacted by the Bush administration and we get this current mess.

No single person is to blame for this mess, it's been building for several years, most people just choose to ignore it and keep on making a profit for themselves.

Yes, the government should bail out the economy, but it will not happen because there are to many trying to say Aye or Nye. They all have their own agenda and those agendas put the good of the country second to their careers. The greater problem facing this nation now is TIME. As Congress debates today (Monday), the stock markets are falling sharply. I suspect that TIME has run out.

Reading some of these entries, I'm not sure what all of this has to do with Palin. I am no fan of hers but come on, stick with the issue. I disagree withhis corporate welfare check period! It is the result of the failed Bush polices and also the fault of President Clinton. Bacj in the 90's he had a chance to stop the deregulation and did nothing because he was too worried about his legacy. It is laughable to see how many of you forgot that the bad word in the 90's was "monopoly". It was a big push to deregulate industries to "give the little guy" a chance to compete. Well, he you have it folks. That bad decision created a culture of greed with no oversite and guess what, the little guy has to pay for it.

Mr Bush

You are a complete failure as a President. As President, your job was to defend the constitution of the United States. Your job was to defend the rights of the people. Instead, you chose to protect the large corporations at the expense of the people.

You have not only destroyed your legacy, but your family name, your brothers chances to become President someday and the entire Republican party. I have voted Republican all my life but will never vote for your party again.

The saddest part is I am sure when you lay your head on your pillow tonight, there will be no guilt or remorse keeping you tossing and turning all night.

Just do the research on who put us into this mess from the begining. It was members from both parties but Barney Frank, Chris Dodds and Chucky Shumer were knee deep in the de-regulations of the finance/banking rules. The one thing I admire about Russia or China is that they shoot their corrupt officals when caught.

On another note...people keep harping about Palin's inexperience well, she's not running for president like your inexperience Obama is. Have yet seen anyone name one thing he has accomplished to warrant being our president.

Never in my life did I think the leaders of our country let this nation get in this mess. This means BOTH democrats and republicans. They have lost site of how to manage this country. It is all about big business with the middle income paying for everything. Corporate American, as well as the White House can not relate to people that live on one pay check and are blue collar workers. They have NO CONCEPT what is really happening in America. How can you understand when you are so rich and have millions of dollars and no worry on where your next meal will come from. Washington is just bandaiding each problem, without resolving the real problem. Don't you worry about what will happen to this great nation or do you rationalize and do the best you can? We do understand and we are so tired of the postion both parties have put us in. ENOUGH!!!

Why should any American tax payer give a single cent to bail out the US stock market & failing US banks because these entities over spent their limits? The Federal & state governments need to do their jobs & prosecute the greedy thieves - not bail them out!

New Yorker...

Shut up. You talk about responsibility? Who was it that allowed people to live beyond their means? Its the government's job to regulate the nation's economy.

Seriously, after the trainwreck of the last 8 years, there is NOTHING you or anyone else can say to vindicate Bush. The greatest country in the world is in miserable shambles...and it is ALL thanks to your hero in the white house and morons like you who STILL point fingers elsewhere...rather than admit responsibility.

(oops, I had to repost because I left out a very relevant word)

Folks, banks may make a mistake now and then, but they don't institute stupid money-losing ideas as industry-wide banking/lending policies.

Losing money is NOT in their financial interest… which is why they don't institute stupid lending policies… that is, they don't when they don't have their arms twisted behind their back and a gun to their heads, which is what the federal-law "Community Reinvestment Act of 1977″ did.

The CRA legally forced (read: blackmailed) lenders into lending to lesser-qualified and OUTRIGHT UNQUALIFIED persons (see "food stamp mortgages" or even "unemployment mortgages"), in order to ensure that every Harry HardLuck and Sally SobStory could purchase a home they otherwise could not afford.

This is NOT a Wall Street or banking/lending problem and it was not caused by lack of government intervention and oversight. It is government intervention and feel-good affirmative-action liberal do-gooderism that created this problem in the first place. Now we have a $700B bailout plan that doesn't even address the cause of the problem or seek to repeal it: The Community Reinvestment Act of 1977.

Restore our economy by restoing common sense to lending: Repeal CRA and dismantle Fannie and Freddie.

Although this comment will not be posted as it is negative to Obama.

Before everyone goes off blaming everything on the republician, (who do have some culpability in this), here are some other issues to think about.

1. Look at Obama's economic advisors. These are folks from Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac who took home millions and kept on pushing the losses that were going to occur back until they were no longer in the leadership positions. These are the folks that are advising Sen. Obama. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac giving the loans that they did, put us in this position.

2. Deregulation of the banking industry. This occured in 1999, and last time I checked, this was during Clinton's presidency (but as we are seeing, Clinton is no longer the great president now that Obama is on the scene).

3. For the last two years, Sen Chris Dodd (DEM) and Rep. Barney Frank (DEM) have been chairman of their respective banking committees, but have yet to call any hearings or inquries, but when you get campaign contributions like they do, you would not want to.

4. Everyone should check who received the second highest amount of campaign contributions from Fannie Mae from 1989 to 2007. That would be Sen Obaman. So in two years he has received more than folks that have been in Congress for over 15 years.

People need to research and understand the entire picture.

To all you liberals stating that Obama will only tax the 20% and cut taxes for 80%. How did you come up with that. 40% of americans do not even pay taxes. They are riding on the coat tails of working americans in goverment handouts. At the most he could only give a tax break to 40% of americans that work and through his plan if you are already on the dole and getting a goverment handout you only get more and you paid none. The only goverment program that should be in existence is social security and goverment checks for the truly disabled. No grants, no food stamps, no medicad , no foriegn aid, no military aid to foriegn countrys, no check for squirting out a kid every nine months and claiming you have to be home to watch them. I am sick of taking care of slugs who are to stupid or to lazy to work.

Why we do this on a countdown clock? This is no way to make policy, or make a reasonable decision. This is wrong, wrong, wrong. It’s only a recipe for making the problem worse. We can’t “borrow” another $700B if this doesn’t work.

What sane government spends hundreds of billions of dollars on a plan that they fully acknowledge may or may not work?

What type of government makes this insane “investment” while at the same time acknowledging that, even if it does work, it is only a band-aid at best and puts off the problem yet again? Moreover, since when is the US government in the business of gambling?

What aren't we being told? I see it on their faces, they hold their noses while giving news briefings. The house Republicans seem to be the only ones willing to bring any sanity to this process. I have great respect for all the Democrat legislators, so I really need help in understanding thier position and why they are so willing to jump into bed with Bush on this.

On the surface, given the information I have, this is reckless government, and an irresponsible way for our elected officials to conduct business. Doesn't this bill deserve at least a week or two of study and discussion?

I don't understand this crisis at all. I "get" the supposed "crisis"... but who woke up and pulled the "financial crisis" alarm? Two weeks ago, this "crisis" didn't exist. Outside of the recession, it doesn't feel like a crisis, it doesn't look like a crisis, so what gives?

I am calling, writing, and faxing my representatives (and the various committees) daily, urging that they NOT push this through w/o significant discussion and contemplation. I urge everyone to do the same.
