WASHINGTON (CNN) — Rep. John Boehner, the Republican leader in the House of Representatives, says the chamber will not vote again Monday on a $700 billion plan to bailout the financial services sector, after it was dramatically defeated on the floor.

Watch: 'It's not Wall Street's fault'

Dear CNN,
95 I say 95 will be the number that haunts you forever. Having been a lifelong Democratic, I can not understand why 95 delagates ( Democratics voted against the so called bailout ) yet CNN seems to want to put it on the Republicans. I have watched you guys everyday for the last 9 years. NO MORE NO MORE NO MORE I will continue to watch LOU DOBBS but thats it. You guys are not telling the truth or you just think we the people are stupid. We also watch whats going on tv, PLEASE not another John Kerry who do you folks think you are ? As a democrat… it is hard to swallow that we are the cause of deregulation and the failing housing market!!!

Vote Out the LOSERS   September 29th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Nov 4 Voter's Guide
Republican_____NO
Democrat______NO

Any one else____YES

Since the race is "too close to call" by almost ALL accounts. We Americans who are upset with The Government (dems and repubs) should use this opportunity to SEND A MESSAGE TO THEM and vote third party all the way.

Since my Senator and Rep "don't have time to respond individually" to my concerns, then I better send them a stronger message!!! NO MORE! No Way, No How, No more Democrats or Republicans.

John in Ohio   September 29th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

"Peloser, Reid, and Dodd let 97 DEMS vote against in order to garner more polling profit for Obama at cost $$$ to YOU!!!

TWO YEARS and NOTHING from the DEM lead congress."

What kind of stupid are you? This mess has been brewing for a lot longer then 2 years, and the Treasury Department falls under the Executive branch anyway. What about the years when the Republicans controlled the House and the Senate and set the stage for all this? And you don't blame the 108 Republicans who voted against the bill, you blame the 97 Democrats who also voted against it? You're crazy and dumb.

Lisbeth   September 29th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

I am utterly appalled!

We have a global financial crisis, largely due to recless and greedy speculators on Wall Street. This crisis affect everyones daily life. Also ours here in Sweden. So we bite our nails while watching the US news, awaiting for your politicians to correct this financial mess.

How shocking then so see Congress behaving just as immature and recless as Wall Street, rejecting the much needed bailout plan!!!

The world looks on in disbelief, while Congress turns into a Kindergarten. Think again! Act mature! Please show true leadership setting petty feelings and partisan needs aside.

JS   September 29th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Republicans CANNOT blame the Democrats. Republicans failed to deliver their votes. THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS A COMPLETE FAILURE!!! This proposal was offered by a Republican president, supported by Republicans in the senate, but KILLED by republicans in the house. THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS A COMPLETE AND UTTER FAILURE.

Penny   September 29th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

What the hell do they mean our feelings were hurt!

THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!!! GET RID OF THESE REPUBLICANS!!!!!

Hey Julie. Think It was the republicans that are blaming pelosie for them voting no. Talk about wearing your emotions on your sleeve. Whether the people of the us want this or not the peolple blaming pelosi are the repubs that wanted this . Now how does pelosi hold responsibility for that?

Tony   September 29th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

IT'S TEH REPUBLICANS STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WAKE THE HELL UP PEOPLE!

THE REPUBLICANS DID NOT WASTE ONE SECOND AFTER THE BAILOUT WAS VOTED DOWN TO LAY BLAME ON THE DOORSTEPS OF THE DEMOCRATS.

SAME B.S. FOR THE LAST 8 YEARS.

YOU THINK THINGS ARE BAD NOW, ELECT MCCAIN AND PALIN AND KISS YOUR JOB, YOUR SAVINGS, YOUR RETIREMENT, PENSIONS, ETC. GOODBYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Marie Brigham   September 29th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Pretending that you are protecting the taxpayer against the evils of the free spending democrats is a great way to win votes from those who are ill advised and or ignorant. It is a disgusting and evil way to attemp to win votes when your party has been responsible for our fiscal deficit - no prpoblem giving a blank check without any restrictions for war. No remorse for the billions that have been spent on contracts for the private sector to make millions in Iraq-not the soldiers-they rely on familes to provide basic needs.

I can't believe that somehow the Republicans are blaming the Democrats for this mess. Did Bush change parties?

I only hope that we can surive until Obama takes over.

John`   September 29th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

I can't believe that republicans didn't vote on this because of what someone said. Are these people for real. America's financial future is at stake and they vote against a bill to punish the other party. My God what kind of people do America have running this country. Talk about being petty. God help you all. You need to get rid of this Republican party

Kelby from Houston, TX   September 29th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Men lie, women lie, but numbers don't lie. I see people quick to comment on 97 Dems who voted against where there was 130+ rethugs voted against it. The retuglicons killed it. no the dems

It seems to me that the Internal Policy based in Terror on people, the disrespect for human rights and the autodetermination of other Independent Nations, the two stupid wars during last 7 years, a new missiles shield in front east, and now this $700.000 plan, ALL promoted by republicans goverment, makes USA more comunist than U.R.S.S, and more national socialist than Germany of Third Reich…Indeed, all during republican goverment…

Eve   September 29th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

OH Now you say they didn't vote for the bill because of Nancy Pelosi. This is definitely an eye opener. REPUBLICANS ARE LYING ABOUT CARING ABOUT MAIN STREET. WAKE UP AMERICA. THIS IS CLEARLY PARTISAN POLITICS!!!!!!!

Do anybody ever think about someone else other than themselves? What about our elderly that depend on their pensions? What about kids that was promised a loan for college this semester? What about a small business that was hanging on by a thread? This is about Main Street, not Wall street. They had better do a better job expalaining themselves and get off of their behinds and stop this stupid argument that Pelosi made them mad. This is utter nonsense. You think you got problems now, just wait until these people can't get money to buy groceries, gas and the basic neccessities to sustain their families. You ain't seen nothing yet.

Carlos Penn   September 29th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

I think there should be NO bailout because the businesses that are overextended (ie; the ones who don't have the money in thier account to make expenses and payroll without borrowing short term) will go away this will make room for businesses who do business correctly by not hiring more employees than thier own payroll capital can support without borrowing. Which will then make small grow not dwindle as politicians are suggesting. So No bailout is a good thing for America not for Bush and the CEO he owes favors to.

Terry, Butte, Mt   September 29th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

The republican argument is what?

The speaker of the house gave a partisan speach so we are going to bash it over the heads of the American people.

What kind of argument is that?

The republican party, putting party over country.

groundhog   September 29th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

FINALLY….the congress listens to 'we the people'!!!! Maybe now we can get a REAL solution to the financial crisis put on the table!!! WAY TO GO HOUSE!!! Please DON'T STOP NOW,get going on a REAL solution!!

Reality check   September 29th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Well, according to Americans the economy is the number one issue. Let's see, if we can keep the economy in shambles, that would boost Obama's prospects for victory in November (basically he'd have the same advisors that helped Bill Clinton successfully balance our budget and promote growth).

You think it's above our government to play the people? Some of you are right…this could all be staged.

My Opinion- I don't owe those corporations that are failing one red cent. Let them fail and give the judges authority to re-write the contracts so that people could afford them. I work in the Home Equity business and my company is ethical and doing just fine without government intervention.

Dennis   September 29th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Yes, they didn't get the votes they thought they had for the bailout bill. Why? Pulosi criticizing Repulican House members for not working hard enough on it early last week. Check those comments in her speech last week and see that she started turning this process into politics as usual, so they revolted.
Announer Sanchez on CNN didn't "get it" when first he said he couldn't find what she said, then he plays a clip this morning about her criticizing Bush. That's not it. She also criticized the entire membership of the Repulican party in the House. Play that clip Sanchez.

sandee in Portland   September 29th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

More credit will not make our economy worse. Our economy is driven by credit. Right now people with good credit scores can't get loans because the banks don't want to part with their reserves. No credit, no economy. As a Realtor, I have lots of clients with small businesses that are suffering already. They can't make payroll without a line of credit which they can't get anymore. To give the 700B to the public like some people suggest is ludicirous. Do these people actually think that would help. I suggest some of you people posting on this website read Economics 101.

OSB said he would break our country financially and Bush went right ahead and did that along with the rest of the republicans. And, for those republicans that are going to say the democrats have been in control for 2 years, get a clue. Good ol' Bush has vetoed almost everything the democrats tried to get through.

TonyinKentucky   September 29th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Everyone knows the GOP's main goal is to bankrupt government but its shocking that they also are in favor of running the entire world economy into the ditch.

Country?…screw the country should be their motto.

ellie   September 29th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

I don't think anyone is happy about the bailout and in a perfect world it wouldn't be necessary. However, without something being done now your very paychecks could be in jeopardy. If you business does not have cash flow they can't pay you, they can't buy supplies and they will shut down causing more problems in the economy. The hope that the economy will just straighten itself out on its own is not reality at this time. Do some kind of bailout WITH accountability, save our economy and vote for a change in party regime to ensure this doesn't happen again!

Jeff   September 29th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Maybe we should start sending the credit where it is due. The Dems approved legislation to give subprime loans to people who couldnt afford the loan and if the banks refused to give them the loans people like the Lawyer Obama would sue the banking instution from not following the guidelines. If we want to fix these issues we need to revisit this legislation and maybe re-write or over-turn the law. This allows people to buy things of value 40 times there annual salary. This strapped their income and ten the greed of the spectulators and the oil industry increasing the price of gasoline to the point that the average American was now spending more than they were making just to travel to and from work, so I blame this on the greed of a few.

bud   September 29th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

How can you blame only the Rep for the vote when 40% of the Dems didn't agree either.

FreeNLovIt   September 29th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

I wish the stock traders would realize that they are the ones driving the stock market, not the Bailout. Just quite panicking and let the market do what it does "Fluctuate". A report comes out that the stock market is going down, guess what? it does DUH!!! That is a self fulfilling prophecy. Driven purely by peoples panic. If everyone wasn't panicking and immediately selling, the market wouldn't drop like that. The same goes with the banks. Everyone making a run on the banks is what it making them fail. Guess what, if you take every penny you have and keep it at home and the market fails, you don't have anything anyway because it's worthless!!!! Think about it what hurts more people if there is a fire? Running and trampling over each other to get out or nice orderly action? If you run and take all your money or stocks, you are trampling over all the other Americans because you are ruining our economy. The big companies (Which I have no excuses for) started this, but we are only keeping it going and making it worse than it needs to be, Let's act like Americans and tact smart and not like scared children.

Terry in NY   September 29th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Just freakin beautiful people! Everyone of these egotistical Washington blow hards should be run out of office. First for playing politics with our future and secondly for getting us here in the first place. Ms. Pelosi should be the first one to go!! Does she think anyone really cares who's the blame here??? Just do your freakin job NANCY and fix it!!!
We all know there's enough blame to go around and it doesn't lie with just one party. For her to blame Bush and all his fiscal problems that she says caused this is riduclous. What about all the pork spending Nancy?? Don't you think that's a problem too?
To all these washington numb nuts "FIX THE FREAKIN PROBLEM OR RESIGN!!!" WE DON'T WANT TO HEAR WHO's BLAMING WHO!

Shannon   September 29th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Why did Pelosi have to rub their noses in what we all knew. She just couldn't help blaming the Republicans, and now our 401k accounts will be worth nothing. This woman doesn't belong in any position of authority.

quixt   September 29th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

I won't vote for Obama or McCain until I see some substance in their respective policies, not rhetoric. So, for all you far left and far right people vote how you want, we independents are going to decide who gets the presidency. Sitting back and watching the ridiculus unproductive rhetoric confirms why I would never belong to a specific party. Unfortunately, the far lefters, you are the worst! Unproductive blamers, with no solution except to vote party line. I have yet to see any substancial plan from either side.

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   September 29th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

When companies can't make payroll or have to shut down shifts at plants because they can't afford the operating expenses then all of you who said to vote no can gloat. This isn't about Wall Street it's about our WHOLE economy.

Karen   September 29th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Gary—- I think you got it all wrong with Obama being wrap-up in Fannie Mae.. McCain and the Bush Administration has been sleeping with Wall Street and the Oil Companies for years and now it's coming back to bit them were it counts. It's just unfortunate they have made millions and the American people have suffered at the hands of this administration. It's time for a change… Go Obama/Biden

Bisola   September 29th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

When are people going to realize that this is bigger than taxpayers bailing out Wall Street. We are bailing out our economy…GOP needs to mature and offer a real alternative if they are so against this!

Charlotte   September 29th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Where's Alan Cranston when you need him? The main Senator in the Keating Fve business, along with three other Democratic Senators. McCain was the only Senator to testify against Keating at the trial.

CJ   September 29th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

To all those Americans who don't see the real picture….the Republicans are playing politics since they are up for reelection. They know if their constituents say no they will get their vote…Be realistic America!!! They are not helping Americans but themselves…first, America you should not see that government is trying to socialize the bill, but it got to this point…if you really care about America you would support the bill and stop saying nonsense…don't you know that sub prime mortgages are the ones to blame..it was those greedy American people who wanted to profit on a short term…buy a house and then resell it for more than it was worth and then the banks just sold and bought (short term also) and here we are…do the math America…you are part of the problem also…not just Wall Street!!!

Lisa S - St. Louis MO   September 29th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

I want a list of those who voted against this bill printed in the USA Today or Wall Street Journal for ALL to see so we know for certain who to vote out of office!!!

If there had been ANY leadership on this from EITHER party, 1,5,10, 20, 30 years ago, we may not have been in this situation. And this is only the trunk of the BIG WHITE ELEPHANT in the room that no one wants to fix —Social Security. Things will only get worse.

I think that the Rethuglicons are up to something.
This looks like some politcal trick to exploit the fears of America to their own dubious end.
This is the party of pure evil, they have tricked us before and I am certain they will try again.
Their president brought this to the table. They have followed this man without question before and it is odd that they are not supporting him and his plan now. They are probaly going to try and blame this on the Democrats.

Irony   September 29th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

I find it ironic that the one time the congressional leaders a listening to to the people they represent, it's the wrong thing to do. The leaders need to so what their title susggets, lead. Politics should not enter into this, the plan maybe unpopular and flawed, but it is the best answer we have. Anyone that doesn't understand this (democrat or republician) needs to take their head out the sand and realize that without this we can welcome another Great Depression.

Will McCain cancel the VP debate so that Palin can go to work with him and learn how Washington works/

Please this is a gimmick and McCain planned this last week when he met behind closed doors with those 'Few GOP House Members" In essence they stall long enough…Palin debate is a bust, and then McCain steps in approves a bill that is almost identical with the exception of maybe one small insignificant item.

That is why he sat quietly in the room while, Barack asked questions and listed his recommendations. He will steal one of Barack's ideas that did not get in the original Bill and say it was his idea,

Everyone that met in that meeting Bush/Republican and Democrats should call McCain Out when this happens.

Don't worry McCain will ride in on his white horse and save the day, even if he has to suspend his campaign again. He is such a maveric and just what the country needs. I listened to his speech this morning with one lie after another and then he has the nerve to say what the country needs is the truth and he will tell the people the truth. He will have to stop lying about Obama if he exspects anyone to believe a word he says. I think he needs to go help prepare his little miss flub-up for the debate Thurs, night, because if they don't tell her how to answer every question she will be in real trouble!! God help her if she has to come up with an answer on her own, her hour of glory will really be over.

AJ   September 29th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

Everyone is now weighing in. What a joke. This was a problem that was inevitable and obvious. The time for whining about what the government does or doesn’t do is now over. The screaming should have started when the wacky subprime loans were being advertised in every newspaper. Again, Americans took advantage of a stupid and risky business practice and are now screaming for a government bailout when that practice backfires. What an incredible sense of entitlement. It's now time to allow normal economic forces to kick in and stabilize the market. We may have a few rough years but will be better off in the long run.

JJ   September 29th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

The bailout bill failed, and the republican Senate Minority Leader is blaming a speech by Pelosi before the vote, which is both hilarious and ridiculous. It directly implies that House Republicans are so petty that they'll vote against a bill that their president says is necessary, and that their party's candidate for president and their leadership in the House and Senate supports, something that is supposedly essential for the preservation of our economy, just because a Democrat gave a speech they didn't like

JS   September 29th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Despite all the whining about this bailout… what is the alternative? You right-wing reactionaries who are reflexively against it because it supposedly constrains our "freedoms", you probably would have been against the New Deal as well. If we have no adequate bailout plan, and we slide into a depression, than I advise all of you to SHUT UP and not offer us any more brilliant advice. How much "freedom" will we have if there is a depression?

I also didn't like the original Bush plan. How many of you who are against the actual plan being voted on today have actually processed the details of the ammended plan as opposed to the original Bush plan? I think that both the democrats and the republicans added many useful features, and the present plan is better than the original.

Terry   September 29th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

All the blowhards are pointing fingers now that the vote didn't go the correct way - too many over-perked "legislators" in office for WAY too many terms. This only leads to ego-largesse (sic) and corruption by the "legislators" and a sense of disembowelment of the American taxpayers. If the constitution was ammended to limit terms for the President, then it should be ammended for all members of Congress with no "retirement benefits" aside from a "small pension" - no health care. They can go back to their real jobs as the founding fathers intended.

i for 1 am glad they voted against the existing plan. why bail out a bunch of greedy crooks. however they needed to propose a back up plan. like give low intrest loans to americans that have a household income of less than 100,000 dollars.then put money in the educstion system so we`ll have educated people running the country instead of the good old boy club. politians and lawyers are nothing more than crooks we all know that. the us goverment needs to help americans by giving garanteeed low intrest loans to buy homes with. it would save the housing crunch and would result in more jobs and help the economy while helping americans. such a no brainer.

Karen   September 29th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

It's apparent President Bush can't raly his own administration to vote for this bill. I'm not for bailing out wall street while the CEO pockets gets fatter but people are losing their life savings and our economy is plunging into a depression. The Republicians are useless and now that the Bush Administration has slept at the wheel, they can't vote for this bill because they are thinking about their jobs. Will someone in the Republican party please light a fire under them and push this bill through?

I see the American way is still supreme - it's all about ME MYSELF AND I - forget the ramifications of doing nothing for your neighbours, employers, friends, etc. You selfish, selfish people - you really think this is all about Wall Street? This has global consequences not just your own back yard.

Elizabeth Pritchett   September 29th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Again the American people will suffer from the lack of concern by our government officials to work together. It is clear that we need to push this bill through the critical question is with what oversight. I have seen nothing but partisian bickering within both parties and once again noting is accomplished. We are on the edge of a financial crisis in this country, a great depression which will touch all Americans. Are we so shortsighted that our elected officials don't care what will happen if this is not resolved promptly and without the back stabbing political agends we have become so familiar with. Change is needed in Washington and it is needed NOW. My message to our Congress and Senate is to remember you work for the people not yourselves. We elected YOU to work out these problems our country is facing. Work together or we'll vote you all out of office. Politics as usual is not working here so work together like adults who care about his country and it's people.

Mike   September 29th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Stock market drops over 500 points, loans not worth the paper it's printed on. how do we get out of this mess. There needs to be an infusion of cash. How stupid are some people. the reason we are in this mess is not only because of corporate greed, but the failure of individuals to understand their own financial situation. Over borrowing for homes and loans to cover their lifestyles (sounds alot like what corporate america does.) that's why we need this resolution to happen. Without this we will fall deeper into the financial abyss. You don't want any more taxes, but your willing to watch your life savings disappear overnight

CNN YOUR THE MOST BIAS MEDIA. TAKE MY COMMENTS OFF BECAUSE THEY ARE TRUE. YOU KNOW THE ECONOMY STARTED BY CLINTON'S LATEST YRS. WALL STREET AND REP'S. OBAMA WAS WRAPPED IN WITH FANNY MAE ETC. OBAMA IS A SHREWED CHICAGO CON MAN. HE ALSO IS RUDE AND DISREPECTFULL. WHAT HE SHOWED INTERUPPTING MCCAIN IN THE DEBATE ,SHOWED WHAT KIND OF MORTALITY HE HAD. AMERICA DOSN'T NEED A CANIDATE WITH A FOLLOWING OF HATERS. MCCAIN WAS SMART PUTTING A HALT ON THE BAIL OUT ,BECAUSE HE WAS WATCHING OUT FOR US TAX PAYERS. HE KNEW WE SHOULDN'T BE INVOLVED BAILING OUT WALL STREETS MISTAKES THE DEMS AND REP'S. OBAMA IS A BIG JOKE.

David Minneapolis   September 29th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

The vast majority of humanity has already been experiencing shock capitalism for the last decade. Look at Argentina if you need some direction of where this might be going. Bush and Co. have given more than 700 billion to their friends at Halliburton, Blackwater and Brown and Root in Iraq, not to mention Exxon/Mobil. This was a clever attempt to loot the national coffers again before leaving office to redistribute the money to their friends on Wall Street, you know the "haves and the haves more" crowd that Bush runs with. You see, they knew this was coming, this housing, debt bubble was going to burst. Greenspan and all the brilliant blokes around him helped stack that house of cards years ago. It's all come crumbling down and they thought that we were all a bunch of suckers who would just stand there while they got millions and we got foreclosed. Think again, maybe you might have to sell that mansion in the Hamptons or run away, yes run away to one of the those Caribbean island tax havens that will soon be washed away by global warming. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, baby.

Leena   September 29th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

I hate to say it but I have to agree with Michael Moore's email today…"The Rich Are Staging a Coup This Morning…" This package wasn't for the everyday Americans but helping certain facets to keep their money. It wasn't going to stop foreclosures or even slow them down. It wasn't going to change gas prices, healthcare, etc.

And both Republicans (2/3) and Democrats (1/4) voted it down.

2. 1987: Keating Five
3. 1999: Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act
4. 2000: Commodity Futures Modernization Act, which led to the rise of Credit Default Swaps

The common thread? John McCain was involved in all of them.

Bailout Plan - taxes/
No Bailout Plan - Jobs.

If your company was run the way the government is running things, everyone would be fired and the company would go belly up.

So, you ask, why ARE we putting the government in charge of the (not so)free market?

Even without the bailout, they are messing up the economy. People, this is an emergent system (the economy) that no ONE or no Organization or no Government can control.

The government should just stop monkeying around with our lives.

Hispanic Female Republican   September 29th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Exactly, both the Dems and Repubs are responsible for this mess!

Neither one whats to get left holding the bag when this mess fails!

So, what do we have another mess by these overpaid senators and members of the house. Come on, all these folks need to go!

Vote them out of office! It's both the Dems/Repubs fault!

Let's hold their feet to the fire!

dlc   September 29th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

This has nothing to do with Rep or Dem. It has to do with whether we can trust Bush, McBush, Paulson, Bernaki. NO we can't. The Dems are trying to seem like the white knight, and not thinking this thru. The Republicans who have been sitting on their hands and rubber stamping ALL of Bushs projects for the last 8 years want to seem responsible to the public. Give me a break. Bush failed at EVERY business he owned before he came into office. The Reps voted for him anyway. If Gore was not ripped off for the presidency, we would not be in this mess. Paulson is a multi millionaire, he is trying to save his friends on wall street and himself. This isn't going to effect him or any of the other fat cats back east ,REMEMBER THAT ON BOTH SIDES OF THIS!! . None of the senators or congress have been in the real world for years.Who cleans the house and shops for the groceries. The wives ??? I dont think so. Probably the salvadorian maid like Rush Limbaughs, speaking of lipstick on a limbaugh pig.. The people in Washington are out of touch, ALL OF THEM.

WI Cheesehead   September 29th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Republicans republicans, they are at it again “cutting the nose to spite the face”. I bet you they did this to show they can stand up to Bush, but this grand standing will not stand the test of time because come November people will be wallowing in economic pain and they’ll get their share at the voting booth. This $700 billion band-aid would have bought them enough time to get past elections and they’d have blamed whoever takes over on bad leadership because with that kind of bailout, you have nothing but high interest rate and inflation to follow.

Barney Frank has no shame when he can stand up there and speak about this financial crisis. He is one of the major players of the crisis along with Bush. Yet he points his fingers at everyone else, namely Bush. He is THE BIGGEST hypocrite I have seen in my entire life. The man needs to step down and quit talking or show some humility and admit he was wrong in 2003 when he said fannie and freddie were just fine. Does he think the American public are stupid, or are they?

Pam   September 29th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Oh, this could be just another Bush ploy!

Two days from now things will be fine and they will say "see the Republicans were right so vote McCain.

I thought he susspended his campaign to save the day?

ABEL   September 29th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

REMEMBER BARNEY "EVERYTHING AT FRED AND FANNIE IS OK" FRANK…AND OF COURSE, MR DODD…BOTH OF THESE CHARACTERS PROFITED HANDILY IN THE PAST FROM THESE ENTITIES….NOW, WHEN IT IS GOING WRONG, THEY ARE LEADING THE CHARGE FOR CHANGE????? THEY BOTH SHOULD RESIGN…AND TAKE OBAMA WITH THEM

Yahoo! After I heard this Acorn company was in the original bail out plan, I was motified, what the hell! The plan can't be trusted. I don't care what the plan is, no company should get any special provisions. No bail out. Democrats are non starters, blame layers and Republicans can't make decisions unless they are getting a direct benefit.

Will more banks go under?

whatever happened to mccain's rushing to dc last week to save the plan? he's so patriotic he had to put the country's economic affairs first before his candidacy. oh, wait, he stayed in new york wednesday evening, appeared in couric's program, had dinner with that lady whats-her-name, went to bed at 9pm, the following morning appeared and gave a "rousing" campaign speech at bill clinton's global initiative, bill clinton praising him as a "great" man, then went to dc where he muddied the hearings.

do these republicans think i'm blind and stupid? they must have. now, with the cowardice of the press corps following mccain with their tails tucked between their legs gives me more reason to help out sen. obama by donating my money and time.

Allen in Hartwell GA   September 29th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

You would think that after opening the door for the worst financial crisis since the depression, the republicans would at least swallow their conservative pride and do something for the country.
You would think, but you (and I) would be wrong.

Credit Caused the Problem   September 29th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Too much credit is what caused the disaster. More credit will make it worse. Don't be fooled. Some of the rich people already know this. They wanted to the bailout money so that they could survive during the time that will come anyway. Credit gives the false sense of economic growth.

The reason this Bill failed is because the Dems sought some safe-guards in the Bill to protect the American taxpayer, i.e. those companies being helped would have to make up the difference of the loan if the full amount loaned by the taxpayers was not paid back in full within five years.

The Republcians didn't want to put any regulations or binders on their fat cat friends who run these coampnies so they opposed the Bill. That's it in a nutshell. See you all in the soup line.

Diana   September 29th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

The best way to solve this economic problem is give the 700 Billion to the american adult people, then they will pay their mortgages, put money in the banks therefore Banks will have money to loan each other. WE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE should decide and this is the decition, We don't want to give money to those who wrong manage the money WE want to give the money to the american people to make this economy run. MONEY TO THE PEOPLE

TXBad1   September 29th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

You must accept credit crunch if you are foolish to stand on principle.

-NO econmoic growth = loss of jobs and a falling dollar
-NO credit for business means no jobs, cost cutting and no innovation
-NO Student Loans = loss of skilled labor force to compete globally
-NO CAr Loans = MOre auto layoffs, part store layoffs, etc etc
-NO House refinancing loans = MOre foreclosure and falling home prices and more housiung related job losses

Are you okay with the consequences? Well?…….

The Republican leadership supposed to deliver half their membership and they now say their feelings were hurt by Nancy Pelosi so they didn't vote. Pelosi said nothing that would have caused this.

Attempting to blame it on the Democrats is such baloney. The Republicans and their "leader" John McCain are jokes who put party before country.

Everyone on here blaming Republicans and Democrats alike need to stop, take a deep breath, and re-think their comments. This country is at the point where it doesn't matter whose fault it is. What matters is that we, as a people, come together to find a solution. I do not like what is happening on Wall Street. My retirement is gone. But, I do not believe that socializing our economy is the answer. These financial institutions made their bed. It is time to let them reap what they have sewn. We as Americans, outside of the government, need to come together and get ourselves through this mess by helping each other - neighbor to neighbor, friend to friend. Both the Democrats and the Republicans have shown that when it comes to true leadership, those in charge of both parties are impotent.

James Hoffman   September 29th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

I think the bail out should be for the people that are loosing, about to loose their home to foreclosure. Those that lost their homes already, where possible should be brought up to current and put back into their homes.

The historic formula of 25 percent for housing should be forced across the board on all loans for a primary residence financed within the past three years.

I believe the lending institutions should take a hit on their over zealous loan qualification process that began this mess. The real bailout would be the difference between the current loan amount and new loan amount. The institutions would be borrowing that amount from the government with the expectation that it would be repaid. The government would retain an ownership interest until the loan was repaid.

eds   September 29th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Maybe they should hold the greedy CEO's and CFO's personally resopnsible for the failures. Might smarten them up if the results of their follies hurt THEIR wallets and not just ours.

Obama nor McCain know how to fix this, just stop saying that as it's an insult to your intelligence. Obama hasn't fixed anything in his life and he is going to save us from this mess???

Pelosi is a complete Joke. She is a disgrace to Democrats. America voted for change in 2006 and congress has much lower approval ratings than Bush and she is the face on a failed party. They haven't done anything and then she makes a HUGE mistake today especially when a ton of democrats made millions through Fannie and Freddie. That killed the bill right there.

Bush's legacy: stop blaming the Republicans or the Democrats - they were all put in a terrible situation. They lose whether they vote for it or against it.

This is a failure of the Bush Administration - the blame lies directly on George Bush's shoulders. He has led this country into dissaray. His administration, his cronies, all of them can take the blame for where we are today.

Lets see… Bush tried to get a draconian plan through in 2 days. Now there is a compromise bill. The original was far riskier and had no controls on anything. And yet… this time the democrats are the ones ramming the bill down people's throats? Those that think so need to go back to the beginning and see what Bush tried to ram down the throat of both parties.

In the end we are all going to pay for this one way or another. Things are not going to magically fix themselves far far away while the rest of us dont worry about it.

John Starnes Tampa Florida   September 29th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Or was this just another Republican Campaign Ploy? Some of the party's members oiling the wheels of the McCain Campaign? The only reason I can muster! This is outrageous! God Help America!

AS AN ADDED NOTE, LET'S GET RID OF ALL INCUMBENTS! THEY'VE BEEN IN POLITICS SO LONG THEY'VE FORGOTTEN WHAT IT'S LIKE TO TRY TO LIVE ON A DAILY BASIS WITHOUT MILLIONS IN THEIR POCKETS. THERE SHOULD BE A TERM LIMIT ON THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE JUST LIKE THERE IS FOR THE PRESIDENCY!

scott   September 29th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

We are really about to see some trickle down economics!

Joe   September 29th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Republicans are SINKING THIS COUNTRY!

Amazing   September 29th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

This is CRAZY POLITICS. NO MORE REPUBLICANS!

Peter   September 29th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Democrats have been the majority for both House and Senate for 2 years. You certainly can't blame the minority for the failure of bailout bill. The initial negotiation didn't even include the House minority leader. How would anybody expect this would be a bipartisan bill. It's a fact that this congress is the least accomplished one in American history, just like Bush is the least popular President.

JASON   September 29th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

THIS ISN'T A DEMOCRAT THING..
THIS ISN'T A REPUBLICAN THING…
THIS IS A LIFE THING!!!

Denial   September 29th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

This Bailout was needed + it had consumer protection, Oversight & penalties for CEO's …….. Sept 29th 2008 .. the end of Capitalism

Jim   September 29th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

The DEMS FAILED this bill on purpose! First they pressured and Forced the Republicans to propose the bailout (an extremely left wing thing to do, socializing losses) and then the DEMS failed the bill on purpose just to make the Republicans look bad. This is ridiculous.
Even if you aren't voting McCain, for your sake, do something about this Congress and vote in some Republicans so we can get them out of this greatest disapproval rating of all time slump.

Come on Johnny B, don't be co cranky and fussy. Take a nap and some meta mucil. Then sit down and talk about this some more…

Why   September 29th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

I'm just a student, and I'm not trying to make any political statements. I'm just asking.
Is it because of McCain's Interference that the bill failed?
And are we headed for a great depression?

Linda31   September 29th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

Question….can a maverick be a leader while being a maverick……

DD   September 29th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

I agree..it had more loop holes in it that did not protect the small businesses and main street. Why was this bailout not looked over, the tax payers should have had more protection than letting power to the treasurer take the call. I feel that the decision was correct, we are not runned by the govern't 100% of the time. Are we?
I did not like the draft either, to much read between the lines.

True   September 29th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

The bailout plan would have been too little too late…and just a bandage.

We'll recover.

Steve/ Houston,TX   September 29th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

Wait a minute, I thought McCain came to the rescue and fixed everything. Didn't the Maverick help things out?

Barbara CA   September 29th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

'Man up' people, this "Nancy hurt our feelings" stuff is not a good enough reason to pull down the economy of our great country. You have been asked to serve this country and you now need to do the best thing for all Americans. This is no time for ego or even party, this is a serious time. We don't need excuses, we don't have time to hold your hands or wipe your eyes, you've got to 'man up' now! We voted for you, we need your votes, get the job done!

One man, one vote!

Brian - Trinidad   September 29th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

How come Obama and Pelosi could get 20 more Democrats to vote for the bill? That is the question of the day,not how come Bush and McCain couldn't get 20 more Republicans to vote for the bill.
