Sen. John McCain defended his decision to suspend his campaign Monday.

(CNN) – John McCain defended his decision to suspend his campaign last week to be on hand as Congress hammered out the details of the financial bailout plan that failed in a House vote Monday afternoon, telling an Ohio crowd that he left the campaign trail because he did not want to “simply phone it in.”

“I know that many of you have noticed, but it’s not my style to simply ‘phone it in.’ I am a Teddy Roosevelt Republican. I believe our leaders belong ‘in the arena’ when our country faces a challenge,” said the Republican nominee. “I’ve never been afraid of stepping in to solve problems for the American people, and I’m not going to stop now."

Over the weekend, both McCain and major supporter Sen. Lindsey Graham used similar language in describing the reason for his choice. “John didn’t phone this one in,” Graham told Fox News. “You can’t phone something like this in. Thank God John came back.”

Democrats responded by pointing to comments from top McCain advisor Mark Salter, who said that McCain had decided to spend his time at home or at his campaign headquarters instead of visiting Capitol Hill during marathon negotiations over the bailout bill over the weekend because “he’s calling members on both sides, talking to people in the administration, helping out as he can. …He can effectively do what he needs to do by phone,” said Salter.

McCain also told the crowd Monday that he “went to Washington last week to make sure that the taxpayers of Ohio and across this great country were not left footing the bill for mistakes made on Wall Street and evil and greed in Washington," and that that Barack Obama had been “watching from the sidelines” as the country faces a growing financial crisis.

“At first he didn’t want to get involved. Then he was ‘monitoring the situation,’” said the Arizona senator. “And watching from the sidelines is exactly what got us into this mess. It was the lack of accountability and oversight that put your working families tax dollars on the line,” he said, repeating his charge that Obama had supported tax increases on the middle class.

“A vote for Barack Obama will leave this country at risk during one of the most severe challenges to America’s economy since the Great Depression. You see, when it comes to growing the economy and protecting you from the corruption of Wall Street and Washington, Senator Obama just doesn’t get it.”

The Obama campaign responded with another statement that again made an issue of McCain’s demeanor. "Senator McCain’s angry diatribe today won’t make up for his erratic response to the greatest financial crisis of our time. John McCain knows that the budget he's talking about didn’t end up raising taxes on a single American,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor.

Wow, look how much it helped having the ole maverick being there. He needs to get over himself. He is useless!!!!! I am sick of hearing his garbage! He can't even lead his own party. Pathetic.

Anita from Arizona   September 29th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

So he can communicate with Capitol Hill on the bill from home over the phone in the weekend, but suspends his campaign to go to Capitol Hill during the week……. HMMM…. Does anyone else see a problem with that??? Total hypocrite….

White EX REPUBLICAN Texas Woman FOR OBAMA   September 29th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Who CARES if he 'suspends' his campaign.
Have you checked out his plan for HEALTH CARE?
If you can't afford to pay for health care in the first place, is a $5000 tax credit really going to help you?
Plus, if you're lucky enough to have an employer that pays for any part of your HEALTH INSURANCE, KISS IT GOOD BYE.
Have you checked out his TAX CREDITS?
Doubling the per child credit is OK, but what about the tax payers WITH OUT kids and seniors? What's in it for them?
Don't believe me? CHECK OUT MCCAIN'S WEBSITE.

Liz F   September 29th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

yeah, the suspension that never was.
some ill-dreamed up illusory college football type play, something to throw the voters off the subject, and try to get as many as possible to lay down at the feet of emporer mccain, (hoping no one will see he has no clothes) fanning his majesty with palm fronds and feeding him grapes, because, don't cha know, he deserves it for saving the economy.
a lot of good it did, huh?
they still don;t have an answer.

OBAMA 08

barbara campbell   September 29th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

These people just invent reality minute-by-minute, not caring whether they repeatedly contradict themselves.

I guess when you're responsible for sending over 4000 good Americans to their deaths in Iraq; when you've participated in the economic collapse of the wealthiest country in the world; when you've sold your soul to the rich and powerful – you really don't want the American people to know where you stand. Hence the moving target.

Thomas Oladele   September 29th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

What Americans and Obama should ask Mccain is IS THE SURGE WORTH THE OVER 4000 DEATH AND THE WASTED BILLIONS,COUPLE WITH LOW RATING OF AMERICA IN THE WORLD AND THE WORST ECONOMIC PROBLEM IN HISTORY The answer from Mccain should be Yes or No.If Mccain can answer Yes then we should vote for him but if it is NO then he should go and live in Alaska, forfeiting his 8 houses and 13 suvs

Here is the GOP playbook as though I needed to expose it:

Stratagem 1: MISLEAD by any means necessary, omission of the truth or outright lies OK
Strategem 2: DISTRACT (via multiple outrageous actions and statements)
Stratagem 3: INVERT your weaknesses and flip them onto your opponent
Stratagem 4: DENIGRATE the opponent via attack or dismissal of their legitimacy or policies
Stratagem 5: PARROT any ideas or language that is working for your opponent, and obfuscate the origin of anything that is working as intended for your opponent (see stratagem #1)

sounds like a recipe for "change", doesn't it? NOT. Sounds like Bushie. "That's fuzzy may-ath!"

I dare any republycanthrope to refute this post. DARE you.

C W   September 29th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Yeah, yeah, yeah, the sun doesn't come up unless John McCain tells it to!

Everyone can see through the publicity stunt your "suspension" was.

Maybe the real reason he seemed so grumpy during his debate was because the stunt didn't work!

hometowndemocrat   September 29th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

A Teddy Roosevelt republican??????? Shame on you John putting yourself in league with President Roosevelt! I'm sure if the man was alive today he would be horrified at the very idea!

The ONLY thing that this republican ticket and Teddy Roosevelt have in common is that they both like to shoot things. Roosevelt liked to shoot wild game, Palin likes to shoot moose and McCain likes to shoot off his mouth!

tim   September 29th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

McCain…. you are a sleezy worm who will say anything to get into office.

I really dislike the republican party now. I used to be republican, but not this year. I will not vote in a person who can't even look his opponent in the eye.

Disgusting!

Samuel   September 29th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

That is a Lie. Senator McCain, your credibility is fading very fast. No one takes you serious anymore. Check it out and save yourself from self destruction.

Big Ed   September 29th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

What suspension? Talk about failure to lead, Senator McCain couldn't deliver the Republican votes for the bailout, so much for his leadership and trip to Washington D.C.. Then his cronies are upset about what Speaker Pelosi said. They got their feelings hurt, so twelve of them changed their vote. Because their feelings were hurt. "Take that America!" Country First my foot! Where were the Republicans when Cowboy Bush kept shooting off at the mouth? What's good for the Republicans is good for the Democrats! McCain and Palin – can talk the talk, but can't walk the walk!

Hey, you twelve – if your vote depends on how your ego is stoked, there's a bus leaving town soon. You should plan to be on it. Prema- Donna sissies!

MinFL   September 29th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Like others have asked, when did he actually suspend his campaign?

No answer, eh?

Vote Out the LOSERS   September 29th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Too bad McCain and Obama don't have to defend why they have suspended their Senatorial Duties to run their campaigns.

I don't vote for politicians so that they can spend their time in office out on the campaign trail trying to get a promotion.

The audacity of these two. Talk about wasting money and time. Good thing Congress is almost ready for recess…then maybe they won't feel so guilty about bilking the taxpayer.

The Fab One   September 29th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

You should have phoned it in, Sen. McAncient. You'd have had more interaction over the phone than you reportedly did in person.

GO OBAMA!!

gene   September 29th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

This is such a joke.. he suspends his campaign, runs to washington to help fix the problem. Ok.. that would be noble if that was how it happened. Instead.. while everyone is participating in a serious discussion.. he's just sitting back there with a smirk on his face and not contributing at all. Then at the end.. his imput consisted of him stating that house Republicans needed to be included in the negotiation since they refused to participate initially. Unfortunately.. he was parroting a statement already made by Howard Dean. So.. McCain flies accross the country to sit in a meeting and contribute NOTHING. Thanks McCain for being there.

Susan   September 29th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

HE COULD HAVE USED HIS BALCKBERRY, the one he invented.

Sue, California   September 29th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

John McCain's "suspension" of his campaign was a joke. So was the threat not to debate. All he did was make a bad situation worse. What is hardest to believe is that his campaign thinks Americans can't see through this charade.

My take on the debate is that McCain did not look at Obama because one of his handlers told him not to lose his famous temper. You could tell by the look on his face that he came close.

MN   September 29th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

1. McCain did not suspend his campaign. He said he was going to, but he didn't. Ads were run. Talking heads were all over the television.

2. McCain spent all day Saturday "phoning it in" to Washington.

It's hard to believe anything he says anymore. He will do something right in front of your face, and then thinks that if he tells you over and over that he didn't do it, that eventually you'll believe him and start questioning yourself.

McCain is not the answer to our tough times. With all due respect, his policies and political stunts just aren't what our country needs right now.

Jim in NY   September 29th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Thank heavens that John McCain put everyone through the additional drama that he did. As we can see It Really made a difference ;-)
I will vote for the stable team-

JayT.   September 29th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

At this point there is no convincing you if you are still voting McCain/ Palin. As those who voted for Bush/ Cheney in 2004 had literal blood on their hands in relation to the war, those who vote McCain/ Palin in 2008 will have the figurative blood of a crashed economy on their hands. Serves them well. I only wish those who see the forest for the trees did not have to go down with them.

If it was so important for McCain to be in Washington last week, what has changed this week? In fact, isn't the Senate voting on the bill right now? If it is so important, why isn't he casting his vote?

By the way, why did it take him over 24 hours to get from NYC to Washington last week?

McCain should have not gotten into politics and just stayed a war hero. Now he is a joke who will be better remembered for the sleaziest presidential campaign ever instead of for his sacrifice to his country. So sad.

Election Watcher   September 29th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

McCain was right to suspend the campaing, as Obama should have. I heard the speech he gave on Saturday, and he was trying to take credit for the bailout agreement, calling it "his" package.

John Mccain is just another greedy politician who played politics with his drama last week and still is doing it today. He did not suspend his campaign, he did not help the republicans in the house understand the gravity of the ecnomic problem we are having. He couldn't get through to his republican buddies, he is not getting anywhere.

Lee in Ohio   September 29th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Rob   September 29th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

your gimmick theatrics failed Mr. McCain. You can spin yourself to death and this just isn't going to ever look good on you. perhaps it's time for a permanent suspension for your campaign before it's too late… or maybe not it is kind of fun watching you implode.

sallievoter   September 29th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Mccain thinks the whole country is stupid. Actually, though, only about 42% of them are according to Gallup today.

Mccain did the old cut and run trying to get out of the debate. Then, he did the old cut and run and hid out all day Saturday after the debate.

He did NOTHING by obstruct progress and make a total fool of himself.

America, you just have to ask yourself how much of this crap are you willihg to listen to?

dlc   September 29th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

I cant believe that liberman or graham can see what McCain is doing considering they have their heads up his rearend all the time. Its like Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCainty, Either Leiberman or Graham are telling Mccain who he is with, where he is, what he is doing. It's like the three stooges, ( sorry stooges for the insult ) McCain did not say anything in the meeting with the president. He was not helpful in any way. He needs to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. Obama can do it, so can my 5 year old cousin. Suspend his campaign, what an idiot. He could fly to DC without making all the clucking noises and vote, or put in his two cents to a committe that he is not even on. Is this what you want leading our country? Sad day.

Matt   September 29th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

He didn't suspend anything!!! You need to call him on this CNN, especially since you posted a story about it and everyone knows this is a lie. Enough is enough. He kept ads running, he kept surrogates talking, he did an interview with Couric, he spoke at CGI, his website kept seeking donations, he arrived in DC about the same time Obama did and they went to the meeting, WHERE HE SAID NOTHING. His arrival caused Republicans to suddenly balk at the bill. At some point CNN, you need to put aside ad revenues and stick up for what's right. And this is clearly NOT RIGHT.

Melly   September 29th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

This guy suspended his campaign, when to washington, injected politics into the bailout plan and HAS THE NERVE to defend his STUPID decision.

Pitbull without lipstick (get Palin out of my city, philly)   September 29th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

And stop blaming Obama for the bill's failure it was the petty republicans once again to destroy our beloved country and americans. this is as expected in fact maybe they did this on purpose and then McCain will swoop in and pretend like he will convince the GOP party to vote for it and claim credit. This would be another political gimmick. The GOPS probably got together in a secret meeting to discuss this whole political gimmick.

Mickie in PA   September 29th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

And I thought he said at the debate enough progress had been made that he wasn't needed — well guess what McCain, the Country doesn't need you misleading us on every turn any more. Retire to one of your homes (which I belive is 9 not 7).

I love how Ed Rollings talks about McCain as a gambler as some sort of positive trait. I don't want a gambler in the White House. McCain has lost the trust of the American people…

tina   September 29th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

He needs to stop lying. plain and simple. It did not go over as he had hoped and he lost the debate…We don't need another gambler in the white house. He was seen by everyone as a mean grumpy old man. Who did not have the common courtesy and respect of looking his debate opponent in the face. But I guess when you are going down in flames it is probably hard to look at the new when you are the old.

Get Real   September 29th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

These were the best two comments that sum up that McCain is not a leader Do not be suprised if the GOP all of a sudden steals one of Obama's ideas from the meeting here are the two comments from this blog I like:

1.
According to sources in the room, the meeting began like this;
After Pres. Bush convened the meeting, Pelosi began as is customary. ( as the majority leader of the House) She and Reid deferred to Obama. He laid out, without notes, the Democratic ideas about what safeguards the bill must have. When finished, Pelosi asked Sen. McCain to respond with the Republican plan at which time Sen. McCain deferred to the Republican Congressional leadership and said nothing else.
Yep, he’s quite the leader.
Did a lot of good too from the looks of things.

2.
During his campaign suspension, McCain claimed that he was devoting his time—ALL of his time—to the important task of solving the economic crisis.

Later we learned this was not true. He spent Thursday evening, and Friday morning preparing for a debate that he swore he had no intention of participating in without a bailout deal. He refused to take a stand on the measure during the meeting with Bush and other officials. He claimed he would return to Capitol Hill after the debate, then it leaked that he had not done so, but instead was ‘working the phones’ in regards to solving the crisis. The very thing he criticized Obama for doing prior to the debate.

It was a dishonorable attempt to score political points. He should be ashamed of himself. He is unfit to be president.

Sen. Lindsey Graham “John didn’t phone this one in,” Graham told Fox News. “You can’t phone something like this in. Thank God John came back.”

Yes…Thank God! He really did such a great job of making sure this all went smoothly.

(and point in fact…on Saturday he did phone it in. Just because the phone he used is closer to DC than Obama's doesn't alter that fact)

Alan   September 29th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

I guess with the latest bailout failure it's time to suspend the campaign again, McCain. Right? Or, have you changed your mind about how important you think this is? Did everyone see right through your failed political stunt?

Nelson Colorado Springs Co   September 29th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

They have been walking over us for years, they are the ones ruining our country, they know they are going to lose power, they are staging all this to try and hold on. We must unite and defeat the reds, they couldn't even side with their own president because they don't care what is right, the care about staying in power and that is all they care about. down with repubs blue revolution, take our county back, it is our county.

If McCain were a true aficionado of Theodore Roosevelt, he would know that he did not like to be called "Teddy" and that, after he retired from being POTUS he preferred to be called "Col. Roosevelt."

He also didn't have much use for big corporations that didn't act in the public interest.

McCain went to Washington and then made his phone calls. What's the diff where he was calling from?

But most important, in the end he failed to deliver the votes for his party. So whatever he did was a failure anyway.

And the whole "campaign suspension" was a lie anyway … yes he went to D.C., but he didn't cancel most appearances, nor did he stop his ads or attacks.

With McCain it's all about spin, not substance.

Pitbull without lipstick (get Palin out of my city, philly)   September 29th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

You know what CNN, and stupid supporters of McCain/palin.
I am extremely furious about this, I live in PA and not one day has gone by where ads for McCain have stopped!! there are ads every 30min on TV, and Obama's ads air only a couple of times per day.

This is an outright LIE! I can send you footage of mcCain's ads. This is not a campaign suspension if his ads attacking Obama, Pelosi, reid are continuing. Ask every battleground state and you will get proof that the campaign is continuing. I am so tired of these lies.

PD Thomas   September 29th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Bottom line…if he were plugged in from the beginning and actually 'phoned it in' he would not have needed to 'rush off to Washington' 22 hours from NY (it's an hour flight max).

This is a scham. Obama needs to call him out on this directly…not through serogates…not through a written statement…he needs to say the words outloud!

beevee   September 29th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

No amount of justification will cover MCcain's ploy as something he did in peoples' interest in mind. It is so glaringly evidnet that it is a political stunt that he tried to pull to come across as a leader and it backfired. Everyone knows that McCain knows a didley about economics and his apparent campaign suspension is a scam. If he so bipartisan and resolving issues how come the house republicans did not vote for bailout?

Laughing, No Really, I'm Laughing   September 29th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Ok. So the bill was shot down. Will he suspend his campaign again?

Seattle Sue   September 29th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

It appears that Mc(worthless as teats on a boar hog)Cain does not have much clout with his fellow Republicans as they voted 133 against the bailout bill.

Brian   September 29th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Give Obama a chance on the economy. We know McCain's hypocrisy and partisan pandering is not going to get us anywhere that Bush hasn't already gotten us.

We need to let Obama have the economy and see what he can do with it. It's all we've got left as a choice.

HOWEVER… the person who said that "mccain hates america and americans" deserves to be shipped off to a third world country where there is no food and it's 150 degrees. HOW DARE YOU. mccain almost died for AMERICA and AMERICANS. how about obama hates white people? ooops did i say that? it's one thing to debate about a candidate's choices, but you are so ignorant and have such a low iq that they shouldn't even let you vote.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08

Lesley   September 29th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Excuse me but McCain did phone it in. He spent his time in his Virginia office talking on the phone. Both candidates appeared at the WH on Thursday and participated in a meeting. But while Obama was campaigning after the debate, he was also speaking on the phone, same as McCain, to the WH and other leaders about the crisis, staying on top of the negotiations. Obama was doing double duty, speaking to negotiators and also speaking to the American voters in the towns that he visited. He was doing it all. And apparently McCain could have stayed home and not said anything to anybody because the Repubs did not listen to his advice after all, as we see in the news today. What else are the negotiators going to say! That they didn't need McCain? That wouldn't have helped his campaign. They had no other choice but to back his silly drama. They had to deal with his campaign tactics at a time when they were stressed out trying to negotiate this megadeal. McCain is no leader.

CNN – Please Post this – Comment Re: McCain's public comments about attending the Presidential Debates

I would also like to interject that if McCain is aiming towards transparency if elected as our President then why did he not tell all of us (Americans) that there was no Republican elder that would be at the Economical Bailout and that was why he flew back to Washington? Instead he put everyone into a tail spin because we did not understand his position. This tells me that he was making a political attempt to throw the entire debate and the polls to slant his direction because he KNEW he was loosing ground….

Brandi   September 29th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

John, are you going to suspend your campaign again? We still don't have a bailout plan….when are you leaving for DC?

Anonymous   September 29th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

I wish Obama would pick up on this "Teddy Roosevelt Republican" mantra. Something along the lines of the American people looking for 21st-century solutions to problems facing them today.

It conveys his "McCain is out-of-touch" message while getting in a subtle shot as McCain's age.

Lifelong Republican for Obama, Columbia, TN   September 29th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Unbelievable! They are holding the American people hostage to their failed ideology. They hang onto their extremist views like harden dogma. Sorry folks the democrats have been in charge during the whole subprime issue that caused this mess and now they want to sweep it under the rug while claiming they are "protecting" you. This kind of protection usually comes from people with very large cousins named Guido, then again those are the people that have always "been in bed" with the democrats anyway.

Another thought since McCain mentions the Great Depression. Which party was in power in 1929? The parallels of wanton greed and excess under a republican administration are more than coincidental. What party got the country out of the Depression? If you don't know the answer, google it.

McCain is defending a non-event. He claimed to have suspended his campaign, but in reality, he didn't. The ads kept running. His surrogates kept talking, and he, himself, went to talk to Katie Couric (a conversation which was mostly about his campaign), then give a speech. McCain doesn't need to defend suspending his campaign. He needs to defend why he did what he did. He's in a box. If he claims he DID suspend his campaign, he's lying. If he says he didn't know things kept going, even though he'd told his team to stop, it shows he doesn't know what's going on in his campaign team. Neither situation is a good one for John, especially when you add the fact that nothing he's done has contributed to the negotiations for a bailout.

And McCain returning to Washington yielded what exactly? Seriously – someone needs to explain this to me.

The bailout has failed in the house and while I may be totally on the fence about this personally – McCain stated he was for it. It is clear however that he is unable to rally those in his own party behind something he supports.

As President – how could any of us have any confidence that this man can garner the support of his own party – and of democrats on anything he wants to do?

The whole situation is a farce.

I find it interesting McCain keeps calling himself a "Teddy Roosevelt Republican", Theodore Roosevelt was the worst kind of populist, whichever way the wind blows president we had in the 20th century. Although, like so much else with popular perceptions of historical figures, the legend has replaced fact.

Mark Twain wrote about Roosevelt:

"We are insane, each in our own way, and with insanity goes irresponsibility. Theodore the man is sane; in fairness we ought to keep in mind that Theodore, as statesman and politician, is insane and irresponsible."

On second thought maybe McCain comparing himself to T. Roosevelt is accurate.

Let Obama and the Democrats continue to do what they do best to make the country profitable. Old Joe Biden basically said it best when he took on both McCain and Palin, in his last speech. He did not get much press because of the bailout circus. Biden spoke to women issues, and on the economy. I think that is why so many women favor the Democratic Ticket. It is because of Joe Biden, and this Economy. Biden is not only ready for the debate; he is also ready for the Oval Office. I am fully persuaded that Obama and Biden, can turn this economy and country around. Someone tell McCain and Palin,”Thanks, but no Thanks.”

It wasn't that important to you.

You cancelled Letterman to be on Katie Couric's show, spent another night there. Said nothing when you did get there. After the debate when you were "heading straight back to handle things" you were off having dinner with your buddy Lieberman while the rest of the politicians worked on the package. Simply a photo op and a chance to try to take credit for something you did nothing to accomplish. Will you vote this time? Or will it be like all the other times you were a no-show.

People are starting to see you for who you really are now McCain. An empty suit that says and does anything to get into office. Makes me wonder what promises you've made to your largest donors.l

No longer for McCain   September 29th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

It has become apparent that John McCain is loosing his mind.
The choice of Sara Palin for his running mate was questionable enough. His idea that suspending his campaign and going to a photo op in Washington would save the country is another stupid more decision on his part. What really gets me is he continues to say the same untrue statements even after they have been proven wrong.

CNN = Jerry Springer of news   September 29th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

The new mantra of the McCain campaign is to repeat how McCain is a "Teddy Roosevelt" Republican over and over. He made this comment several times on "This Week" on ABC. Going back to the past of Teddy Roosevelt is not going to help him look like a forward-thinker, which is what the voters are looking for in these dire times. I thought he was the "original Maverick" which should mean he is beyond comparison to other politicians.

I am truly tired of McCain. The only way he was able to keep his composure during the debate was to not look at his opponent. That certainly did not portray a presidential demeanor to me. His consistent procolomation that Obama "just doesn't understand" really made him look old because he did not support his claim with facts, he merely wanted the public to believe him because of his "wisdom," which is code for age.

McCain did nothing to help the credit crisis. It was a political stunt and he should be ashamed of himself, trying to use this critical situation as a political photo-op.

wjc   September 29th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

And despite all of the gimmicks, McCain still pounds on with the insulting "Country First" slogan. Apparently, you believe in "Country First" if you agree with McCain, but not if you don't. Why does anyone have to defend their action?

Because they know they have made a mistake and will try to preempt anyone from highlighting the mistake that was made.

Irony   September 29th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

Suspenging your campaign of lies, so you could lie…

What do you take the US population for, a bunch of idiots?

The only thing you suspended was your Letterman appearance!

If your failed attempt at derailing the debates didn't work, what are you going to try next?

ines   September 29th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

There was no suspension to defend – WE ALL KNOW IT. Does McCain really believe this reality he's pretending exists? What meds would you have to be on to believe him?

Last week was nothing short of a failed FIASCO for the McCain-Palin campaign.

Jillian, NY   September 29th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

I guess he did fly back to Washington, DC. This man can't even use the internet. When he leaves the 20th century, he'll be fine. Until then, my vote goes to Barack Obama.

Hello?

This man will say anything…bush talk….Fear of the debate and not being able to not look like the liar he is about so many statments he has made is why he wanted to avoid the campaign trail..(debate). His strategy backfired though…he just does not understand…strategy, strategy…. Look forward to the rocket scientist debate on Thursday…hope debate camp is going well.

He wanted to pospone the debate so as to cancel Sarah's….It was obvious to everbody what he was trying to do. 2 hrs after he supposed "suspension" Mcacain campaign said the vp debate will be posponed too….that was the original plan..but he was caught in the act…I hope he learn from this and at least stop lying

GO OBIDEN

Steve/ Houston,TX   September 29th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

John McCain does not care about you or me. He will say or do anything he can win this election. It has been his lifetime goal to become president. This is just something he wants to add on his list of accomplishments. People don't be fooled by this guy. It's dangerous to believe that he really has our best interests at heart. He does not even understand the economy. What could he really have offered other than taking up air?

Vote Smart, Vote Obama

Honey if you can't "phone this in" then what are you going to do as Prez when you're in Africa on a visit and something happens somewhere else that you "need to deal with"?

What are you going to drop. That's what phones are for.

PS. we have fax machines too–they send whole sheets of papers.

You ran McCain.

Becky   September 29th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Well he could have emailed it in.

Oh wait, that's right…can't use email…

WHAT SUSPENSION?!? His campaign still sent the typical update email to reporters on Thursday morning. And HOW LONG did it take McCain to get to Washington? And, his campaign said that he would only be able to vote this week on the bailout if "schedule permits".

WHAT A JOKE! Keep preying (correct word choice) on the ignorant, McCain! Good for you there are still a lot of them!

Who is he trying to fool? The people who are not closely following this circus of events? I will move to Canada if America doesn't get this election right this time. God Bless Obama and God Bless us all!

He has a lot of nerve attacking Obama for keeping his cool throughout this crisis. McCain switched positions so many times, he didn't know what to do. Obama showed real leadership and McCain didn't. He so called suspending his campaign was a political stunt, a gimmick!

I hope Obama comes back swiftly with a response to how this man responded during this crisis. He needs to show him where the "real" leadership lies.

Jim in Raleigh   September 29th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

But he didn't suspend his campaign. He still ran ads. He still sent out his news updates. He still went on the air with CBS (though not Letterman), made a pollitical speech, and other stops before heading to D.C. (including spending the night in NY).

He lies a bit too easily – of course, it fits the party – just look at the current administration.

Dan   September 29th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

All I've been hearing is that John put the negotiations in a tail spin by showing up to the meeting at the last minute. Both republicans and democrats alike, said he did nothing, and said nothing of substance. They said his showing up just for a photo opp, was ridiculous and not productive.

Honestly … what did he suspend?

1st – Pailin and his other operatives made appearances ALL WEEK

2nd – on the day, Thursday I believe it was, that he was suppose to "suspend" I know I saw TV ads run for him

3rd – he announced this on Wednesday and stiffed Letterman on an interview but then delayed leaving for Washington to talk with Katie Couric that night and to make a 'very political" speach a Clinton's mtg the next day.

4th – he continued debate preparation throughout the week including in his apartment in Virginia while he was suppposed in Washington "not phoning it in".

5th – He was 100% useless and InEffective with his visit.

I Invented the McMuffin... and fire   September 29th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

"Idiot" was originally created to refer to "layman, person lacking professional skill", "person so mentally deficient as to be incapable of ordinary reasoning".[6][7] Declining to take part in public life, such as democratic government of the polis (city state), such as the Athenian democracy, was considered dishonorable. "Idiots" were seen as having bad judgment in public and political matters. Over time, the term "idiot" shifted away from its original connotation of selfishness and came to refer to individuals with overall bad judgment–individuals who are "stupid". In modern English usage, the terms "idiot" and "idiocy" describe an extreme folly or stupidity, and its symptoms (foolish or stupid utterance or deed). In psychology, it is a historical term for the state or condition now called profound mental retardation.[8]

Seattle Voter   September 29th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

I use to respect McCain but not anymore. Maybe there's a truth from a friend of mine who was also a Vietnam veteran that the reason McCain was shot down was he was dumb!

John   September 29th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

I really feel sorry for this country, to see an experienced ,POW ,presidential nominee Senator John McCain lie to the people about where he stands and play politics.

He keeps flip-flopping and doesn't see the consequence of his own actions.

Its unfortunate that a white man standing for president can lie and make false accusation and is allowed to act the same in real life.

God save this great country which has been a hope for all in this world.

Ken in Dallas   September 29th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

McCain's now insulting Teddy Roosevelt with his self-serving lies.

Roosevelt was a Progressive Republican, an extinct breed.

McCain is a laissez-faire dogma Republican, the kind Roosevelt campaigned against.

Hi doesn't have moral to be the president of this country.

Farzin from NY   September 29th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

let's see-

McCain pulls a giant stunt and pretends like he's going to come save the country and get a hard negotiated bail-out deal through. Everyone warned him against it b/c he was injecting politics into a delicate negotiation, and he did it anyway. Result – he derailed talks and empowered the house republicans to balk at the deal. Well done, Senator McCain. If this is a preview of what the McCain administration will get done, all i can say is "Thanks, but no thanks!"

Only thing missing from this ridiculous stunt was the "Mission Accomplished" banner.

John McRelic and his party tried to pull a fast one, but alas, it didn't work…..they were going well with the deal until McHistoric and his campaign came up with this idea to stall things and let McCain suspend his campaign in the name of the country!! and fly into Washington to save the day like Mighty Mouse!! But he went there and made things worst and sat mute into the meeting with his mentor Bush, now they are trying to spin things. McLiar is still for deregulation so that he and his wealthy friends can continue to suck the little man dry. Thank GOD that Obama is in this game to change it!

Oh, please! I no longer recognize you as Senator John McCain. You have morphed into someone who is just plain dishonest.

tws1906   September 29th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

His campaign was not suspended…he just needed time to get himself together before debate…he definately did not help with the bailout.

Leena   September 29th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Nice spin. But the fact that he still has to defend it mean someone's not buying it.

And by the way….way to control your party in voting for the bailout. Great influence you must have.

David   September 29th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

flip-flop, he phone after the debate

The Scientist   September 29th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

He is unfit to be president.

tulsa   September 29th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

According to sources in the room, the meeting began like this;

Julia   September 29th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

But he did phone it in. On saturday CNN had pictures of him being on the phone instead of actually going to the capitol. And guess what? Now the vote failed and McCain is to blame.

Even Steven   September 29th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

He didn't suspend his campaign at all (has he un-suspended it yet?) There were McCain ads still playing late last week on TV all over Colorado where I live, and there still are. But most importantly, it took Johnnie Mac almost 28 hours to mosey himself over to Washington from NY City. He was too busy talking to Katie Couric and bashing Obama at Bill Clinton's Millennium Project convention in the meantime.

JD in NC   September 29th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Great. He brought his "leadership" to it, and now the Republicans shot down the bill because Pelosi criticized Bush. Insane.

Anonymous   September 29th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

I think both McCain and Graham are missing the crucial facts that McCain didn't actually suspend his campaign, and he didn't contribute anything to the debate, and in fact might have contributed to its falling apart.

Other than that, spot on analysis.

Please explain why McCain had to suspend his campaign to fly to DC for less than 24 hours?
Please explain why McCain had to toss out the "I may not debate" for a trip to DC that lasted less than 24 hours.
Please explain why McCain's all important visit did nothing?
Please explain how this man can stand up in front of the American people with a straight face and pretend he gives a S*** about anybody or anything except winning the presidency.
He is a farce. His party and their president have destroyed the economy, and our standing in the world. Now they have the nerve to try to blame someone else for 6 plus years of failed Bush policies?

Greg, NY   September 29th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

First of all, he didn't really suspend anything. He was still running ads, he still had all of his offices open, he was still receiving donations.

Second of all, he wasn't able to rally the Republicans to vote yes on the bill, so his 'suspension' actually failed.

John, Brooklyn, New York   September 29th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Let's face it….the suspension was a political gimmick….and one that failed on every level. Where's the bailout legislation he vowed to hammer out? Dead – killed by his own party. He couldn't even deliver his OWN party, let alone reach across the aisle.
