A new Obama ad targets Carly Fiorina.
A new Obama ad targets Carly Fiorina.

(CNN) - Barack Obama is targeting a John McCain advisor's former compensation as a Fortune 500 CEO in a new television ad running nationally.

The 30-second spot goes after executive pay and is specifically critical of Carly Fiorina, the current McCain advisor who was ousted as the head of Hewlett-Packard in 2005. The company doled out $21 million in severance to her, and reportedly another $21 million worth of stock and pension.

"John McCain's advisor, Carly Fiorina. The fired CEO who left with $42 million," the ad's narrator says. "Barack Obama says it's got to change."

The ad, called "Parachute," also attacks Washington Mutual CEO Alan Fishman, who reportedly could get $19 million worth of compensation, even though the bank failed last week.

"You've got corporate executives who are giving themselves million dollar golden parachutes and leaving workers high and dry," Obama says in the ad. "That's wrong. It's an outrage."

Fiorina had been a prominent surrogate for McCain, but she was promptly removed from the cable news circuit earlier this month after she said neither John McCain no Sarah Palin was qualified to run a major corporation.

Now let me try to understand this, if you are a top manager of an American Corporation you can receive a huge pay out when you are let go from your job, but when you are on the bottom and you are let go from your job all you get is let go!

Will someone please tell me how can I get one of those jobs that pay a lot of money when I'm let go?

McCain = no change

This is an ultra left wing blog. To bad because, there is no one able to discuss things rationally with. It is a big turnoff. I am trying to weigh all the issues with an open mind and with some integrity. This blog has a lot of like minded angry people – if that is not scary I don't know what is. How can you use reason when no one has ability to dicuss issues rationally and with a degree of professionalism – very boring. I'm a Independent – still undecided but people like this make me feel we need a counter weight to fend there hate off.

chelle   September 29th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Re the Meredith Viera interview...Has John McCain lost his mind?? Why would he say that??? 20,000 people lost their jobs and she performed well and deserved 42 MILLION dollars?????? He is lost in a barren land of saying things and not backing them up even a little bit..... How very sad.

On a completely different note – Do Sarah Palin's children not need to go to school? Why are they flitting around the country with their mother? Shouldn't Todd be making sure they are in school and looked after – just like the Obamas?

JB   September 29th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

McCain can support a whole bucket, scutter bucket, of crooks and it's ok. Why? You know we are at a place where alot of you people need to face your prejudisms. Don't degrade Baracks character because you are a bigot. Face the fact that you are one and vote for the grumpy old white man. Barack is a man of integrity and he's smart as heck. He has had to face the toughest challenges and he has overcome them all. Being black is the biggest one of them all. He hasn't given up and is actually winning. That's a leader. All Mccain had to do was show up. If Barack was white we wouldn't be having this conversation. No one can take that away from him, even if he doesn't win. But If he doesn't win it will be your loss not his.

"... she said neither John McCain no Sarah Palin was qualified to run a major corporation."

The exact quote was that neither could McCain, Obama, nor Biden. Funny how CNN and mainstream media ALWAYS leave out the part about Obama and Biden. Fiorina did NOT leave that out.

At least McCain and Palin have run something in their lives - that's a claim that neither Obama nor Biden can make. McCain was the head of various squadrons, including overseeing spending and performance. Palin has run small businesses and a city and a state.

To The Former Hillary supporter:

Are you that bitter you would be so stupid to vote for McCain/Palin when these two stand for everything Hillary is against. Shame on you for be so bitter. I hope the bitterness you have in your heart does not lead this country to even more financial ruin. You should be ashamed to call yourself a Hillary Supporter and say you are going to vote for McCain.

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   September 29th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Not long after moving to Houston, the electric company (HL&P) laid off maybe 1,000 workers. Right before Chirstmas no less.
One of the chief executives go what I think was a $5 million bonus.

It seems to me that they could've saved half the workers, slashed the exec and saved even more money.

It's really sad what happens.
And specifically with Carly, Compaq lost a LOT of jobs after HP took them over. 15,000 if I remember correctly.

And to Clinton Fringer,
if she did get 60,000, good for her.
Only numbers that matter right now are the poll numbers, which show her opponents up.

Babs   September 29th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

The whole parachute angers me. We are all raised to work hard and you will be rewarded for GOOD work. We are now setting the standard that taking a company under and make it attractive for purchase, is a job well done.

Since when have Companies become a 'good' to be purchased? Why are CEOs being rewarded for making companies that are financially unstable and attractive for purchase?

The bail out is still going to have these parchutes in them. But somehow the hard working americans are supposedly being protected. Finally, don't be fooled that the companies that will get the bail out won't cut jobs. They will, the bailout is not going to fix greed! The president is full of it to say that it will save jobs...it won't. They still will get cut so the CEOs can make even more!

In a widely-circulated interview, Matt Damon said of Palin, "I need to know if she really think that dinosaurs were here 4000 years ago. I want to know that, I really do. Because she's gonna have the nuclear codes."

Chuck   September 29th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Don't drink the cool aide. Carly Fiorina was elected to her position by a Board of Directors, who also approved her salary, who also approved her severance package. I understand the message, but there are countless CEOs (Republicans and Democrats) that are being paid this much money. To single Fiorina out is a low blow. To single her out shows a lack of leadership, and demonstrates a distinct difference between preaching about change, and actually providing change. Actions speak louder than words.

Rob   September 29th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Hmmm, that's about 50 million less than Raines got before he sent Fannie Mae (and as it looks now, the economy) spiralling to a crash.

See Carla, if you coulda just tried to get that extra 50 mill, then Barry would have been courting you for his side. But, looks like you weren't enough of a criminal sneak. Maybe if you woulda been good friends with Oprah, Rep. Frank, or Senators Dodd and Schumer.

Vote Obama/Biden, and continue the crash course America is bound for.

Dems are the ones who tanked any chance of recovering. And typical Dem fashion, they point the finger and blame others. Just like the spoiled little babies they are. And those of who dim enough to blame the Republicans just show how much intelligence you do lack.

What the hell is wrong with Obama? Why would he do such a stupid thing as put this ad on when one of his advisors is Rubin. Tech companies have less to do with this mess than Rubin's Citigroup and all its bad CDO. How much did Rubin make over the last several years, $150 million? What kind of advice was he giving when he was advising Citigroup and yet he's still at the firm.

And so do do many other Clinton supporters.

I love it. When confronted by a truth...McCain employs those who have profitted by the economic meltdown...McCain supporters don't DENY the allegations, they try to shift focus away from the facts by stating Obama's got CEOs on his team. Address the issue: Is McCain's campaign staff littered with corporate insiders or not? What's your answer: yes or no? I can't hear you McCain supporters...is it because the answer is yes? Then deal with it. McCain is for the corporate CEOs. He advocates trickle down economics (which has NEVER worked with ANY of the Republican administrations). Deal with it. Vote Obama.

Kelby from Houston, TX   September 29th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

Get'em dogg get'em!!! Have you noticed how Obama sticks to the issues affecting America while McCain is trying to destroy his opponent?
And how many times did Obama say "That's not true" during the debate? If you stick to the issues, the Democrats would win everytime. If you look at the record you would see that the Democrats do a better job governing America. We should all be voting for Democrats.

It would be best for Senate McCain to reliase that its over, the is no way he is going to win this election special with his lack of Economis experience . America is facing a very Serious problem and the people are not willing to gamble on this one as they have done with previous Election, they want somoene to get them out of the situation they are facing at the moment, its he is not the right candidate for that.

Fran, VT   September 29th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

If McCain wins this election than America will deserve it. Americans will have a president who won't look at them, will stomp out when reporters ask him tough questions, will dismiss questions, will not feel the need to understand people who have one home, and one car, will veto every bill that benefits soldiers, and will continue to wage war on practically everyone. If you've enjoyed the last 8 years, fasten your seatbelts because the next 4 will be great.

Team America

It is not a low blow. It is showing the hyprocricy of the republican party. The economy is in a mess because of the republicans deregulating the markets. While the banks are being merged or become crash the ceos continue to get their golden parachuetts and their bonuses while the average worker loses everything. It is not fair and people need to be reminded of the republicans continuing to be for the rich. Republicans still are running on more deregulation although McCain says he is for oversight he continues to want deregulation including healthcare. They also want to continue the taxes for the rich. It is time to call out the two faces of the republicans.

Clinton Fringer,

If you want to keep believing the malarchy about 75,000 people coming out to see a talented but little-known indy rock band (instead of Barack Obama), that's fine.

There was no rock concert in Springfield, Illinois on the last Saturday in August - just 90-plus temperatures, high humidity and a blazing sun - and Obama and Biden still drew 35,000.

By the way, which rock concert is helping Obama pull away in both the polls and the Electoral College?

Josh   September 29th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

People say Obama is not a leader or does not demonstrate leadership traits. Well here are some definitions of leadership:
1. Influencing and directing the performance of group members towards the achievement of organisational goals.
2. The ability "to get people to follow voluntarily."
Obama embodies these traits, so to say that he is not a leader because he puts out a suspect ad is erroneous. I might be able to accept a comment that he displayed poor judgement, but not poor leadership. Some folks on the McCain side need to differentiate and understand what the art of leadership is before making false claims.

Tainopower   September 29th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

NOT only Carly Fiorina receiving EXCEPTION and WEALTHY WITH SPECIAL benefits.. Palin depicts herself as a pit bull fighting good old boy politics in her years as mayor she and her friends RECEIVED special benefits. Palin needed to sell her house during her last year as Wasilla mayor, she got the city to sign off on a special zoning EXCEPTION…and did so without keeping a promise to remove a potential FIRE hazard. She gladly accepted gifts from merchants: She asked the City Council to add a friend to the list of speakers at a 2002 meeting…..and then the friend got up and asked them to give his radio station advertising business. She tried to help a neighbor and political contributor fighting City Hall over his small lakeside development. Palin wanted the city to refund some of the man’s fees, but the city attorney told the mayor SHE didn’t have the authority. Her actions after being elected mayor in 1996 raised possible ETHICAL RED Flags.

Is it true she has a 80% approval rate?

Fiorina has a point. Neither McCain nor Palin are qualified to run a major US corporation. Neither is Fiorina. We must point out that she was fired from HP. Neither are most of the CEOs who currently running them. Look at the mess they have gotten us into.

Our business leadership may have an occasional Bill Gates, but those highly capable individuals stand out because there are so few of them.

If only CEO accomplishment matched CEO self-esteem, the nation would be very prosperous.

If youwant short-sighted planning, restoring only the elites, pick McCain.

Of course Obama's ad would never mention Jim Johnson or Franklin Raines who cooked the books at Freddie Mac so they could make millions of dollars in bonuses. His ad would never mention them because they are advisors to Obama. The Democrat Party has become the party of hypocrisy and double standards
----------------------

Noah....as an informed voter, you should check your facts before accusing the DNC and the Obama camp for things that are simply not true. At no time Jim Johnson or Franklin Raines have "advised" the Obama camp on any of the political matters. Check it out for yourself, and don't listen to the misleading McCain ads. Do yourself a favor.

If he really MEANT WHAT HE SAID AND REALLY WANTED TO PUT COUNTRY FIRST he would not have gone tohte DEBATE he could have made more ploitical gain that way.

But now everyone can see it was just a ploitical STUNT. and McCain will do anythng to get a VOTE.

Michael, watching from Canada   September 29th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

It is interesting that the Republican President is pushing for a bailout of Wall Street.......

And rumors have it that McCain will vote against the bail-out legislation?

If McCain suspended his campaign to help push Bush's bailout plan along, why would he now not vote for it?

mel from Ohio   September 29th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Fiorina is typical of the people that McCain wants to protect. He does not care one hoot about middle America and doesn't even pretend to. If you'll notice, all of his rhetoric is AGAINST what Obama wants/does, etc. NOT about what he plans to do for us. Also, I hope that Biden lets everyone know about the millions of dollars that Palin got in earmarks since it was not appropriate for Obama to respond and highlight them during the Presidential debate.

MEREDITH VIEIRA, NBC TODAY HOST: About Wall Street. You said you promised to crack down on CEOs who walked away with huge severance packages. And yet the person that up until recently was your public face, really, on your economic policies was Carly Fiorina, she was the former CEO of Hewlett Packard. She was fired in 2005. But she left with a, I think, is a $45 million golden parachute while 20,000 of her employees were laid off. She is an example of exactly the kind of person you say is at the root of the problem.
MCCAIN: I don‘t think so.
VIEIRA: The CEO—how can you say that?
MCCAIN: Because I think she did a good job as CEO in many respects. I don‘t know the details of her compensation package, but she‘s one of many advisors that I have.

The problem is that when there should not be a single American who would vote for McCain except for those greedy people, he is still getting over 40% in the polls. The direction of this country is determined by the majority. Bush didnt come from sky, majority of Americans elected him twice. Now they with the rest of the people pay the price for that huge mistake. The real question is, does the majority of this country is in one side to prevent this country going to to hell. Still however much we talk, how every we dislike the current situation, majority of Americans may decided to put this country in harms way. So it will be interesting to see what choice they make soon.

Of course Obama's ad would never mention Jim Johnson or Franklin Raines who cooked the books at Freddie Mac so they could make millions of dollars in bonuses. His ad would never mention them because they are advisors to Obama. The Democrat Party has become the party of hypocrisy and double standards
-------------------------
These men are not advisors to Obama. Johnson was hired to vet Obama's VP, but was quicly excused once his connections to Fannie Mae were discovered. Raines never had anything to do with Obama's campaign.

Carlie Fiorina got McCain in trouble about the health insurance companies paying for Viagra but not covering birth control pills. Then she got him in trouble for saying that Palin was not ready to be a CEO of HP. She had it coming. She was given a huge severance package from McCain camp. People are not deaf/ blind/ mute. We can see how corrupt lobbyists and greedy CEOs are the fabric of McCain Camp. We need a fresh start and McCain is stuck in the past with war on his mind.

John McCain is not ready on Day #1. He's been in senate for 26 years and he has proven to be an utter failure in all he does. Surrounding himself with the likes of his campaign is proof positive that nothing has changed and he is still a disaster in the making, but we can make him a disaster of the past...let's get him out of washington..he is USELESS.

Rick Davis: In the Doghouse
It's only getting worse for John McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis. Following the news that Davis was paid $2 million over five years as president of an advocacy group set up by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the New York Times now reports that Freddie Mac paid Davis's lobbying firm $15,000 a month up until last month. The firm was kept on the payroll because of Davis's close ties to McCain. The news comes after McCain insisted that Davis has had no involvement with Freddie Mac for several years, leading progressive bloggers to wonder whether McCain lied to Americans or whether Davis lied to McCain. Either way, liberal bloggers are irritated by the lies and secrecy and the fact that Davis did next to nothing for the money he received. They're also skewering the statement McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb published denying the allegations, calling it a "nondenial" and a "complete mess." One blogger says the news should be "absolutely devastating" to the campaign. It's unclear whether Davis will continue as McCain's campaign manager.

PJ   September 29th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

If I'm not mistaken, the head guy at WaMu had only been there 18 days.... Got over 7 mil as sign on and then over 6 mil when they shut the doors. I could handle that.
What about the head of Bears Stern? I heard he got around 61 mil golden parachute when they were sold to BofA and the head of Lehman Brothers sold his stock options 2 WEEKS prior to them shutting their doors for around 61 mil. Talk about insider info – isn't that illegal?
Businesses go under and the 'Big Guys' walk away with millions while the workers who were the foundation of the business lose everything – been there, bought that tshirt and it's not fair in any way!

It's time to stop them for good.

Most if not all golden parachutes are negotiated PRIOR to said senior executive actually hiring onto the company. In other words, they negotiate their compensation package much in the way the average professional sports star does.

Whining that Fiorina got an eeeeeeevil golden parachute is dumb. Instead of blaming the recipient, why not blame the idiots who offered it to her in the first place?

Again, this is an example of simply dumb liberal tactics. Oh another thing you mainstream media wonks... keep making snarky comments and cutesy little routines about Palin... the voting public will reward you much in the way they rewarded the media in 1980 and 1984 with the back-to-back landslide victories for Ronald Reagan. How anyone can support mccain/palin who makes less than 5 million a year is beyond me. The repuglicans and largely mccain who supported those corporate tax breaks and deregulation (which got us into this mess) have contributed to the huge job loss, jobs shipped overseas and the bail out mess we are dealing with now. And yet people are still considering voting for the two pathological liars because they can't bring themselves to vote for the best choice, the most educated and intelligent person with brilliant judgment. How pathetic you people are. I wish GWB had an island and all you could go live together.

It’s just too bad that the only Americans apparently qualified to advise John McCain on how to deal with the world are those hopelessly corrupted by hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent payments from foreign countries, such as beleaguered Georgia. Good thing that guys like Randy Scheunemann (at right, with McCain), whose two-man lobbying firm took in a cool million from Georgia since 2004, have a superhuman ability to separate their analysis from any financial considerations.

I understand what you are saying, and I wish everybody could see things the way you do! But that's not the case, unfortunately, there are people out there who are ready to believe anything they see on ads, wrong or right, truth or lies, they believe it and act based on it!

McCain started this nasty game as you call it, but it's not as nasty as you think, it's the game, and you don't have a fighting chance to win if you don't keep it up! And that's exactly what Obama understood he should be doing, play McCain's game and target the same undecided voters who need those ads to make up their minds!

It's politics. As I usual read it in here, "if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen".

Being nice is a great thing, but don't let people to fool you around because of that.

Sarah's response when asked about her relationship with Russia.

As Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to our state."

Vote the smart choice

Pier Giacalone   September 29th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Look, this is as plain and simple as it gets. McCain HIMSELF said in the primaries that he doesn't know anything about the economy. Palin's record is that she began as mayor with a huge budget surplus and left with an enormous deficit (sound like some one else we know?).

The current financial crisis is being blamed on everyone from wall street to Washington to mortgage brokers to individual home owners but the common denominator is that more and better regulation would've prevented ALL of those responsible from visiting this madness on the rest of us. McCain has been an unequivocal DE-regulator his whole life.

Forget about the culture war issues – just look up at the roof over your head. Do you want it to still be there in 4 years? For God's sake, vote for the candidates who have ALWAYS been in favor of tighter banking regulation and oversight. Obama warned off this day 2 years ago. Like him or not, he's on the ball where the economy is concerned. So whether it's with a smile or holding your nose or just a shrug, vote for him!

I wish they wouldn't just talk about how much these people are paid, but what percentage of their income they pay in taxes. For someone in a 45% tax bracket who makes less in a year than they do in a few hours this would be a huge sticking point for McCain's new tax breaks for the uber rich.

Bill Stapp   September 29th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

I suppose the outrage aimed at our elected officials will diminish over time. I'm sure they are counting on that.

Are we headed to a time when we don't trust democracy anymore?

The politicians keep telling us good things, but we keep seeing things far differently. They have drivers, free food, large expense accounts... all paid for by their voters. And they spend our money as if they were doing us a favor. This is just the wrong way to run a country.

We cannot afford two wars. We cannot afford to pay social security in the future. And our elected officials keep ignoring these problems.

I think it is time for a change. Either the people demand change, or it will be forced upon us. The former option we can control. The latter option will be painful to accept.

How on earth did McCain think it would ever be a good idea to get advice from someone who bombed a corporation, took a $42 million golden parachute and then said he was unfit to run a corporation like HP? Her saying that simply proved her arrogance, thinking she was qualified to run a company (into the ground) while her P/VP pick was unqualified.

If a toxic, greedy CEO thinks she is more qualified than McCain or Palin, well that just says some really bad things about all three of them – Palin, McCain and Fiorina.

One of the giant mortgage companies at the heart of the credit crisis paid $15,000 a month to a firm owned by Senator John McCain’s campaign manager from the end of 2005 through last month, according to two people with direct knowledge of the arrangement. The disclosure contradicts a statement Sunday night by Mr. McCain that the campaign manager, Rick Davis, had no involvement with the company for the last several years. Mr. Davis’s firm received the payments from the company, Freddie Mac, until it was taken over by the government this month along with Fannie Mae, the other big mortgage lender whose deteriorating finances helped precipitate the cascading problems on Wall Street, the people said.

growing number of Republicans are expressing concern about Sarah Palin’s uneven — and sometimes downright awkward — performances in her limited media appearances.

Conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, a former Palin supporter, says the vice presidential nominee should step aside. Kathryn Jean Lopez, writing for the conservative National Review, says “that’s not a crazy suggestion” and that “something’s gotta change.”

Tony Fabrizio, a GOP strategist, says Palin’s recent CBS appearance isn’t disqualifying but is certainly alarming. “You can’t continue to have interviews like that and not take on water.”

“I have not been blown away by the interviews from her, but at the same time, I haven’t come away from them thinking she doesn’t know s—t,” said Chris Lacivita, a GOP strategist. “But she ain’t Dick Cheney, nor Joe Biden and definitely not Hillary Clinton.”

This is not an entirely Republican problem. The Democrats have done nothing in the last 8 years to address the problem and even longer. This problem started in the mid 1990's – no one did anything then, Republicans or Democrats. Several high ranking politicians were on the boards if not directly involved with these companies and still are high ranking politicians (Frank and Dodd). I say after we get grounded we need to make sure those involved are held accountable and never hold a position in government – possibly give up there benfits for failing to fo there jobs. Pay back time. An Independent.

David, Silver Spring, MD   September 29th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

I know this is going to resonate with a lot of voters, but I don't see how it can be combatted legally unless:

1) CEO pay restrictions are worked into any agreement for govt. bailout, or
2) the income tax code is made more progressive. Back as recently as 1960, the top rate was more than 75%, double today's rate.

I don't see how legally the govt. can limit CEO pay but not the pay of pro athletes, entertainers, etc., except through far reaching tax reform.

Any sensible economist will tell you that government spending is healthy for the economy...generates a tax base for employees and contractors, who in turn, spend their wages and recycles money through the economy. I was hoping Obama would make on ad of this type. Where is Rickc Davis now to cry foul? Hiding with his ill gotten Freddic Mack and Fannie Mae money!

rob   September 29th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

That is shamefull, lets have afull fledged investigation of the group of people who ran Freddy Mac and Fanny Mae into the ground but cooked the books and took millions and millions away. Exactly who in the Govt. refussed to regulate these entities back in 2003, 2005.

When are Barney Frank and Chris Dodd going to hold hearings on the failure that put up to 5 TRILLION in sub-prime mortgages on the backs of the taxpayers...Oh yeah, they were the ones who said all along that they were absolutely safe.

The names Raines, Johnson and Gorlick took the money from Fannie and Freddie and are advising the Obama campaign on economic and housing issues! What a crock, the Dems and Obama will say and do anything to get power. I hope the american people wake up and stop them.

Derek from Louisiana   September 29th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

What took so long for someone to recognize this? They should have been pounced on this. Fiorina was allowed to freely advertised with little or no scrutiny. She was the biggest fish on the campaign that was fair game with being a fired CEO. Political red meat to a pitbull is who she is.

Tony, LA   September 29th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Talk all you want about how we have a republican President....
Just remember democrats control congress, Bush didn't create this mess all his own.

Obama tells you what you want to hear he has great ideas but is he a doer? Who can tell he hasn't been in the senate that long and the time that he was there he voted present. Good to know he showed up now if we could only get him to vote yay or nay....

TESAP;SAVANNAH, GA   September 29th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

great ad......I think more emphasis should be put on the fact that Mccain has 13 cars and 9 homes.or something like that; and he would continue tax cuts to the wealthy.. people like he and his wife......the fact that he has not released his wife's tax returns, the fact that is son formerly worked fo Wamu.......

We Deserve Better   September 29th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

John McCain actually feigned ignorance about Carly's golden parachute in a recent interview with Meredith Viera of NBC's Today show. How many of you honestly think he didn't know this ????

He then went on to rail about CEOs that get payouts for failing. McCain is a big LIAR

I would be ashamed to have John McCain and Sarah Palin as my President & Vice President. We deserve better

Janine   September 29th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

I am disappointed in McCain. He keeps talking about being a POW and his service in the military but what has he done for people in the military. He says military people know that he will take care of them. McCain's voting record speaks for itself. He didn't even vote for the GI bill. All talk and no walk.

And spending freeze? The largest portion of federal expenditures is defence (mostly the Iraq war) and I doubt McCain has any intention of bringing the troops home from Iraq. By the way, on Saturday three carside bombs blew up in Baghdad killing US soldiers – this war has been such a success?????

NoMccainNoPalin   September 29th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

I don't understand why CEOs make so much money? Doesn't that money belong to stockholders? How can they approve such compensation? If one man discovers a cure for diabetes or cancer then they sure deserve 40 million dollars in comp and reward because they would save so many lives. But what does a CEO do that they deserve such compensation? I am baffled, I don't get it.

Earl   September 29th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

Carly Fiorina makes a good target. As a fired CEO with a $42M parachute, she exemplifies the pay-for-incompetence mind-set on Wall Street - and in McCain's campaign.

Susan   September 29th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

It's time someone targeted Fiorina. She's been incredibly vocal against the Obama camp, decrying everything they (and SNL!!!) say with reference to Palin as "sexism."
McCain is erratic and has incredibly poor judgement: in choosing an unvetted VP, in choosing terrible advisors and in trying to politicize every aspect of this election.
America can't afford 4 more of the same!

J from DC   September 29th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

I watched Chris Rock on Larry King, and he made a serious point. He stated how he felt that African Americans have supported the Democratic Party in lock step, for mostly white candidates. Now that the African American Community has a qualified candidate, it would be a shame if any white democrats specifically did not support him just because he was black. He basically stated that if the party is together, then the white members, not just the leaders, should show black members that they can vote for a qualified black candidate. I myself have no problem with voting for a black candidate, or a Hispanic one for that matter. I think if he or she is qualified, and the best to help the country, we should support them. However, I think Chris Rocks comments were particularly reveling for democrats.

My rich uncle came to live with me for awhile. It wasn't long after that when I began to notice I didn't have as much cash. Soon, other things began to disappear as well. My car suddenly vanished, but I couldn't afford to buy another one. When I could no longer afford to feed my wife and kids, I figured my uncle would help out, but he just told me to get a second mortgage, which I did. Well, my wife and kids moved out once the money ran out, and the bank snatched up my house. Now some other dude is taking care of my wife and raising my kids while I'm struggling to feed myself because I have to pay all of this alimony and child support. So if you see some old guy walkin'around tellin' you that he can make you rich if you just give him a few bucks to invest, don't fall for the scam, it's just my rich Uncle Sam.

If McCain doesn't have the cabin that Palin is going to debate school in listed on his senate records then either he lied on his Senate financial disclosure records or this cabin has to be considered an outsider contribution under campaign finance laws. If Cindy McCain's corportation is listed as owning it and they don't report it as a corporate donation then they are breaking the laws. I smell something fishy going on here.

mccain wanting a freeze on spending is his whole economic policy!

If you will listen closely to him, you will notice that he has no new money coming in, but he wants to continue the 10 billion dollars a month for the Iraq War.

Where will it come from? It's not coming from the Defense or Entitlements Budget. It will be early childhood education, senior programs, etc.

John Mccain is NOT responsible for the huge salaries that these CEO'S make, the companies that hired them are!!! Apparently, she is a smart woman or she would not have been in this position. Who of us would turn down this kind off money, I wouldn't.

Also, you Democrats must keep CNN'S Ticker pulled up all of the time and you comment on everything negative about Mccain/Palin. I actually think that you "copy and paste" because I have seen the same postings on different subjects. You need to get more creative!!!

If Sarah Palin is going to Arizona for "debate camp", Joe Biden is in Deleware preparing for the debate. If he is so experienced and smart, why does he have tio prepare??

For McCain to have had her as one of his financial advisors just proves how out of touch he is. Too old, makes poor choices, and unworthy of the job of President.

Enough is enough!

Anyone who wants to do a little homework on this mess should look at the following:

1. 1982: Garn-St. Germain Depository Institutions Act
2. 1987: Keating Five
3. 1999: Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act
4. 2000: Commodity Futures Modernization Act, which led to the rise of Credit Default Swaps

The common thread? John McCain was involved in all of them.

This mess goes clear back to the 1980s, folks. It flared up a few times, but has now become volcanic. It can no longer be ignored, hence our current situation.

If I'm not mistaken, Obama, whom Mr. McDenial has accused of this mess, was still in college in the 80s.

It's sad….. give it up, Grandpa.

Cindy   September 29th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

John McCain scares the living daylights out of me. If he's proved one thing... it's that you have no idea what he's going to do next.

He says one thing and does the other. He proposes a plan and then changes his mind on it the following day. He goes to Washington to "help" and derails the process. He has the choice of 100 qualified candidates for VP and picks Sarah Palin. He gets word of a hurricane in the gulf and threatens to postpone the RNC.

I'm beginning to think he might not be the second coming of George W. Bush — he'll be far, far worse! John McCain cannot be relied upon!

Is this the "transperency" she and mccain want to bring to Washington? mccain says everyone wants reform and change and he is right. The problem with his argument is he and his republican party are the culprits and America wants to change from their lies, corruption and deceit. It is glaringly obvious that mccain did not trust palin to run the campaign for 12 hours while he was having dinner with the traitor lieberman why should we trust her to be VP and possibly the president?

Anyone who is a Republican and tells the truth is not espousing the GOP platform. McCain and Palin keep telling the same lies over and over again long after they have been exposed as lies.

The entire McCain campaign has been designed to attract the most gullible of America's society and leaves the inference that they think voters can't figure out anything for themselves.

of course with the GOP powerful effectively continuing on with their abuses of power in the Alaskan scandal of troopergate where Sara's appointed Attorney General advised people subpeonied they didn't have to comply kind of sounds like the way Bush's main man Alberto Gonzales corrupted the justice system throughout the rest of America.

As a result, Ms. Fiorina has been buzzed about as a potential commerce or Treasury secretary or even as a McCain running mate, although some Republicans close to Mr. McCain swiftly dismiss the idea of her as vice president. But the view within the campaign is that it can only help Mr. McCain’s standing among women to have Ms. Fiorina mentioned as a possibility for high-profile office in a McCain administration, particularly when he is trying to win over the supporters of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

To put these 24 hours in context, you must remember that McCain not only knows little about the economy but that he has not previously expressed any urgency about its meltdown. It was on Sept. 15 — the day after his former idol Alan Greenspan pronounced the current crisis a “once-in-a-century” catastrophe — that McCain reaffirmed for the umpteenth time that the “fundamentals of our economy are strong.” As recently as Tuesday he had not yet even read the two-and-a-half-page bailout proposal first circulated by Hank Paulson last weekend. “I have not had a chance to see it in writing,” he explained. (Maybe he was waiting for it to arrive by Western Union instead of PDF.)

tulsa   September 29th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

I agree with "Mccain is a liar"

Did anyone question what would happen if McCain actually DID THIS?
Talk about a knee-jerk response.
Obama, once again being calm and thoughtful, said that a scalpel, not an axe was needed.
Score one more for Obama.

Fire Rick Davis   September 29th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Fiorina was one to talk – she wasn't qualified to run a major corporation either.

I wish there were more scrutiny an interest over the candidates' top advisors. These are the people that will be running the White House next year, and their influence in shaping policy is extraordinary. Obama surrounds himself with some of the finest minds from business and academia in the country. McCain surrounds himself with jokers like Phil "mental recession" Gramm, Carly "golden parachute" Fiorina, Randy "neocon whacko" Scheuneman, and Rick "taking money from Freddie Mac until last month to buy access to McCain" Davis. The contrast couldn't be sharper.

Ken in Dallas   September 29th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

A spending freeze? Isn't that what you do when you get into office on the premise that government doesn't work?

A government spending freeze stops government from getting anything done. It's a way of demonstrating government failure and making failure a way of life.

Not to mention her slash and burn CEO techniques, where she just flatly laid out over 20,000 employees to make way for her bonus and to give the stocks "a bump". This woman should not be anywhere near the White House advising anybody on anything. She is part of the problem in modern American economics.

This is ludicrous, we can't let this go on for the organizations who receive any money from the bailout!

Team America   September 29th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

This is unfortunate.

Clinton Fringer   September 29th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

What people need to be thinking and asking themselves is why and how Sarah Palin can attract enormous crowds such as the 60K + crowd in Florida WITHOUT free concerts. Obama can't attract that large without the use of those concerts or celebrity appearances yet she is getting that many or more on a the trail with a regular stump speech. Hillary didn't need the concerts either. Makes you wonder doesn't it? Obama = all hype.........no substance.

David in Illinois   September 29th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Right on, Sen. Obama. Once again McCain tries to tie big-money advisers to the Obama campaign while ignoring his own ties to execs who benefited from golden parachutes. And what a whopper it was for Fiorina. This woman was a horrific executive who did terrible damage to the shareholders of her company.
McCain needs to stop the lies, distortions, misrepresentations, and other dishonorable acts. This is a man –supposedly of high character– who couldn't even look Sen. Barack Obama in the eye during Friday's debate. To me, that's small, petty and shifty. This ad is more of the same. He no longer can claim any honor at all. Not after how he has led his campaign.

bigmike   September 29th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

WHAT we learned last week is that the man who always puts his “country first” will take the country down with him if that’s what it takes to get to the White House. For all the focus on Friday night’s deadlocked debate, it still can’t obscure what preceded it: When John McCain gratuitously parachuted into Washington on Thursday, he didn’t care if his grandstanding might precipitate an even deeper economic collapse. All he cared about was whether he might save his campaign. George Bush put more deliberation into invading Iraq than McCain did into his own reckless invasion of the delicate Congressional negotiations on the bailout plan. What this really means is Obama was right when he call McCain about putting out a letter with both of there endorsement McCain saw a opportunity to make a stand first. Even if the “fundamentals of our economy are strong.”

muffy   September 29th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

MCMORON lies out of both sides of his dirty nasty mouth. It is amaZing that the son of a Navy admiral would have no manners. The way he treated Obama last week at the debate was disgusting. If a Jr. High kid did that it would be wrong. He loved Fiorina until she did him in. I heard him talking from Ohio this am and not one word he said was true. He was smiling and fawning all over Miss Mooseberger, idiot wife standing there like a statue, he ignores her. When Sara caribou is around he can't contain himself from smiling. Too bad he couldn't have acted like a gentleman ( remember an officer and a gentleman?) during the debate. Next time I feel sure Obama will go for the jugular and he won't know what hit him.

Noah   September 29th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Of course Obama's ad would never mention Jim Johnson or Franklin Raines who cooked the books at Freddie Mac so they could make millions of dollars in bonuses. His ad would never mention them because they are advisors to Obama. The Democrat Party has become the party of hypocrisy and double standards

Seattle Sue   September 29th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

So if McCain's not qualified to run a major organization, is what's happening to his campaign explained?

The evangelical Baptists are now rushing in to rescue the McCain campaign, even to the extent of defying the law. I wonder what sort of price they would demand for their support, were McCain to win?

Maybe the moral is that if you put an incompetent in charge of the government, you thereby gain an opportunity to buy the whole thing on the cheap.

Frank,MO   September 29th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

CNN is SOOOOOOOOOOO in the TANK for McSHAME. When John McSAME comes up with a negative ad, CNN will post the link to the ad to give it more coverage; but will be biased by posting ONLY A SCREEN SHOT of Obama's hitting McSame on the issues of CEO pay and outsourcing American jobs overseas.

CNN, I demand you be fair and NOT CENSOR FREE SPEECH. POST THE LINK TO OBAMA's AD NOW!!!!

tgram   September 29th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

people need to know that the WaMu guy was only there for three years or so.

i'm thinking, let me get in there and ruin the company in a span of three years and then pay me 18 million dollars.

Mccain is a liar   September 29th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Why isn't there more talk of what Mccain said about putting a freeze on government spending altogather. Sure he could afford that with his 7 houses and 13 cars, he can ride it out at his new house, the white house, but what about the public school systems that desperately need help, our crumbling roads that can put more people to work...why isn't this being talked about more?

McCain Invented the BlackBerry, Palin Invented the Manure Spreader   September 29th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

McGimmick is not fit to run a corporation, much less the most complex economy on the planet

Abby   September 29th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

@wolfblitzercnn: Redskins-Giants always exciting. Both teams have a lot to prove. And Giants can still salvage playoffs. Skins just need a win.
