The first presidential debate did little to change the dynamics of the presidential race, new polls show. (Getty Images)

(CNN) – Nearly 60 million Americans tuned in to the first presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain last Friday, but national polls released this week suggest the square-off did little to change the dynamics of the race.

The new polls are bad news for McCain, who with only five weeks until Election Day is quickly running out of opportunities to shake up the race for the White House.

In a new CNN poll of polls consisting of surveys conducted entirely after the first presidential debate, Obama holds a 5-point lead over McCain, 48-43 percent. That's exactly where the race stood immediately before the two candidates kicked off the presidential debate season in Oxford, Mississippi, four days ago.

“The ruling on last Friday’s presidential debate is in, and it’s a split decision,” said CNN Senior Political Researcher Alan Silverleib. “The debate changed nothing. Obama’s supporters aren’t shifting to McCain, McCain’s supporters aren’t shifting to Obama, and undecided voters are still undecided.

But the poll numbers come even as surveys conducted by several media organizations immediately after the debate showed most viewers thought Obama had won. However the polls also showed the debate viewers appeared to be more Democratic than the overall population.  (Related: CNN analysts grade McCain, Obama debate performances)

"Unfortunately for McCain, a continuation of the status quo favors Obama," Silverleib also said. "The pressure is increasing on McCain to find some way to change the fundamental dynamics of this race. He can’t afford to walk away with a tie in the remaining debates.”

McCain and Obama next square off October 7 in a debate that features a town-hall format - a set up that McCain favors. VP candidates Sarah Palin and Joe Biden have their only debate on Thursday.

"Did 95 Democrats derail bailout just to keep Obama ahead in polls?"

If they did, they sure got a lot of help from the hundred or so Republicans who voted it down with them.

Guess they wanted the Dems to win in November too?

Bald ex-warrior   September 30th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Anyone notice the realtime vote ratings on CNN? The debate may have been a tie, but i counted one or two negetive dips for Obama, yet McCain had fifteen to sixteen dips.

I think McCain has soured his own grapes and has a long uphill battle on his hands. But don't count him out, if older voters go with him he could still win.

Then again, it could be like any Congressional vote, the fence riders just sitting there until it looks like one or the other will win and then they fall that way.

Here is hoping that Thursday night shows us the real VP canidates, not some airbrushed, rote memory, canned answers.

MD, TX   September 30th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

48 – 43 = 5.

The fact that the Obamabots didn't read the article is representative of the reasons why Obama is leading in the polls. No one supporting this lunatic has bothered to read about him.

The Lady   September 30th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Sorry I did not know we were voting on the debate..

dbacchus   September 30th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Tuesday, September 30
National Gallup Tracking Obama 49, McCain 43 Obama +6
National Rasmussen Tracking Obama 51, McCain 45 Obama +6
National Hotline/FD Tracking Obama 47, McCain 41 Obama +6

AND even the crazy biased "batteground" poll (created by Republicans when Mccain started to lose) shows today:

National GW/Battleground Tracking Obama 48, McCain 46 Obama +2

The beatings will continue until morale improves   September 30th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

If the polls haven't changed, and Obama isn't CREAMING McCain by 15 points at this point (we're still within a three-point margin of error), then it's game over: McCain will win handily.

carol   September 30th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

John McCain comes across as a mean spirited, arrogant man who now needs to just go away......nobody has any respect for him with his less than "honorable" self.
Even some Republicans can see him for what he really is now......that is a good thing......we need them to vote for Barack Obama.....a man with new vision who will take this country forward for all Americans.
John McCain is of the old school and we now have a NEW TEACHER in town.....someone who who really cares for average American and not just the rich, fat cats!!!!
November can't come quick enough for me, lets get rid of this useless Republican party and start the New Year with a fresh start and REAL LEADERSHIP with OBAMA./BIDEN 08.

McCain - What an Old Fart   September 30th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

McCain is just a silly old fart who thinks he knows what's going on. The only thing keeping him even an inch in the game right now is Washington itself. It WANTS him to be president, so they can all continue their little deregulated rat race. If it were up to me (and probably most of my fellow dems) obama would already be in oval office.

Tom from Pittsburgh   September 30th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Analysist said before the debate that Obama needed to go into election day up by at least 8 points to guarantee against hidden racism. He appears to be in trouble given that yardstick.

This race is far from over and the one who demonstrates leadership with respect to the financial crisis will win in my opinion. Right now they have both struck out!

MCCAIN/PALIN 08   September 30th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

I still hold out hope for MCCAIN. If you people would do the friggin' math you would see that all this economic blow up is centered around the politics of the 90's, which if you remember was a DEM President. John McCain came out 4 years ago and warned about Fannie & Freddie to no avail. HE IS A TRUE MAVERICK AND WILL BE A GREAT PRESIDENT if he just gets the chance. How anybody could vote against him is beyond me but I guess the "golden one" has you under a spell or something.

NYCVOTER   September 30th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

I see my comment is still awaiting moderation.....let me ask, do you have to say something good about Democrats or Obama to actually have a comment posted. If so, its not right to make people lie. Free speech........ post my previous comment or you are just staling my god given right as an AMERICAN.

Sean Hannity   September 30th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

John McCain is my hero. I love him so much. I pray that he is president so I don't have to lose my tv and radio shows. I can't get a real job. No one will hire me because I'm such a loser.

Scott   September 30th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Yikes...this country is really in a sad situation. From the economy to its choices of nominees for President and Vice President. We have Obama, a young 'celebrity senator' who has little or no track record...who has talked a good game, but hasn't proven a thing...and a running mate who likes to shoot off his mouth. On the other side, we have a older guy who has been around the block many, many times...appears to be in good health, but who knows...and a running mate who is as unproven as the guy running for President on the other ticket. Is the best we could come up with? It doesn't surprise me that the polls are this close...in the end, as some of the 'experts' have stated, this will probably be decided by the undecided voter who goes to the poll not sure of who they will vote for until they go and hit the ballot – and decide to go with the guy who has experience.

MikeH   September 30th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

About all that John can do is to have his spies at Obama's campaign immediately phone in every idea Obama comes up with so that John can call it his idea.

The latest Rasmussen poll Obama-51, McCain-46

Gallup has Obama – 49, McCain-43

Zogby is clearly under Republican control, so I don't look at it.

The other combo polls have about the same spread.

It's Obama's to lose at this point, Palin is too much a joke to make any difference, and McCain keeps shooting himself in the foot.

Lucy   September 30th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Everything is set up to favor the Republicans. They continue to think this time they can still win with snide, sneering, nasty, viscious attacks. Guess what?? It's not working this time. McGrandpa and McBushmeat killer ought to do what they do best and stop creating a mess for the new President Obama/VPBiden. I think they should do a cavity search on Moosemuncher before her debate with Biden to make sure no one is coaching her on a tiny microphone hidden away. Whaddaya think, would they do that?? You Betcha.

Brian   September 30th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

On the campaign trail, Gov. Sarah Palin jokes about listening to Sen. Joe Biden's speeches since she was in second grade. In a just-released CBS News segment, Katie Couric asks if that isn't an odd thing to say given her own running mate's age.

Said Palin: "Oh no, it's nothing negative at all. He's got a lot of experience and just stating the fact there, that we've been hearing his speeches for all these years. So he's got a tremendous amount of experience and, you know, I'm the new energy, the new face, the new ideas and he's got the experience based on many many years in the Senate and voters are gonna have a choice there of what it is that they want in these next four years."

WOW! is all I can say. Thanks for proving Obama's case Gov. Palin.

amanda   September 30th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

If McCain would have used the brain in his head and picked a qualified running mate, he might have been able to pull this off, but his choice shows poor judgement and the American people see this. I am suprised Obama doesnt have more of a lead though.

David, Silver Spring, MD   September 30th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

The foreign policy debate was supposed to be John McCain's big triumph over Obama.

The fact that it wasn't gives Obama a big advantage moving into the upcoming debates.

To use a sports analogy, it's like the two teams are tied one game each in the playoffs, but now the series moves from McCain's home court to Obama's.

Patricia in Ohio   September 30th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Yeah for Obama!!!! McCain has just been caught in his lies. This is no laughing matter if McCain wins. We will be in worst shape than what we are now. He chose Palin thinking she would boost things for him but instead she made it worst. Like David Letterman said he needs to check his metamucil and if he is suspending things now by lying there is no telling what he will do in the White House. But we aren't going to let that happen because we are registering people here in Ohio in record numbers. The race isn't looking good for McCain either. Don't let him fool you.

Texas Witch Twister   September 30th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

CNN's poll of poll. Who do you believe. Who does CNN poll. Nothing but African Americans or flip flop Democrats who wouldn't know a qualified politician if they saw one. Please don't give me any more poll of polls. If we believed in CNN giving out the truth then there would be no need to go to the polls come November. Just let Obama walk on into the White House and let's get our misery over with. Let America fall as it surely is going to. We have not had but One solid President since Harry S. Truman and I certainly don't see one in the near future.

D.Kimbro OHIO   September 30th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

John McCain is a dangerous man!!!! If the american people make the same mistake again (like w/Bush) we will all be in bad shape. I respect him as a man, but I don't respect him as a politician. This man will do anything to get elected. I don't trust his temperment.

Karen, Arkansas   September 30th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Go ahead, keep trying to sway votes to the man who wants to send major money over to Africa.

Read his website, Obama wants to send more money over to under privledged countries in the face of our country going into depression.

My poll will speak its voice on Nov 4th,,,,,

MCCain/Palin

Glenn in California   September 30th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

It's beyond me how Obama can only have a 5 point lead considering the meltdown of McLame and Caribou Barbie. Every day brings new comedy as they out-do themselves, but it would be tragic for the country if voters continue to blindly follow the Republican line.

I just hope that come November 4th, that rational independent voters turn out in force to prevent a tragedy from occurring.

Just say NO to Bush 44 and Caribou Barbie.

Go Obama/Biden!!!

Silence Dogood   September 30th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Obama is "ahead" because no one is pinning him down on anything. He lies, panders, is vague and he gets away with it. no one seems to care. McCain's failings are front and center in the news. Obama's are simply ignored, and few voters actually put the time in to research it – they just do what the loudest pundit says.

If you vote for someone who is lying to you, you will get a liar in office.

Vote Green Party instead of corporate suits.

Tim   September 30th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Um, "Obama holds a 5-point lead over McCain, 48-43 percent" is pretty straight forward, even if the "Straight Talk Express" isn't.

Ohio Women 4 Obama   September 30th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

PK – It doesn't "favor McCain"...McCain favors it...i.e., he just likes it better, that's all. Obama will win again. It just won't convince all the racists and conservatives already voting for McCain to vote for him, because they'd vote Republican if you put a toad on the ticket before they'd vote black or liberal.

Sammy   September 30th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

I suppose if most viewers were democrats, republican voters werent interested in what McCain has to say so they didnt bother to watch. The lowest numbers were in his home state.

I don't have to watch debates to inform me about the dire straits our country is in. I can see that after 8 years of republican RULE! the USA has been subjected to the likes of very selfish people. The Reagan deregulation binge has decimated industry after industry. McCain sounds like a broken record talking about our spending, and earmarks. How much does the Bush/Mccain war cost? Anyone thinking of voting republican may want to check their medical coverage to see if self destructive behavior is covered. Oh, i forgot medical insurance is one of those socialistic schemes that rough, tough republicans scoff at.

Eman   September 30th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

The VP debate will be a game clincher or breaker for both teams. If sarah does well, or doesn't give any responses like she did with katie couric, she can put the polls in motion like she did at the RNC. If biden tears her apart that the polls will likely reflect in obamas favor. The thing we must acknowledge is that Both Sarah and Barrack will need on the job training but which is more dangerous, a learn as you go President or Vice President.

Maggie   September 30th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

The only poll that matters is when we vote on November 4 and we put our "X" beside the name of the candidate that we have chosen to vote for. The CNN poll of polls mean absolutely nothing. Its whoever goes out there to vote that matters and then we will have a true polling because we are now actually voting for our candidate. We can say we are voting for someone but when go to mark that "X" that's when it counts. So please lets stop all these unnecessary polling now and just get to the issues on hand.

CM   September 30th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

People pretty much have made up their minds on who to vote for by now. Of course if Palin completely tanks on Thursday night we may see another small uptick in Obama's numbers.

Barring anything major and or McCain finally getting a clue this looks like the numbers we'll see through Nov 4th.

WI Cheesehead   September 30th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Brad   September 30th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

I am not surprised the liberals at CNN can't subtract. It's amazing how stupid some of the people at this news oulet are. 48-45 is a three point lead. Not to mention that the polls are weighted based on pollsters expectations. Another joke.

sandee in Portland   September 30th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Since neither of the candidates offer specific answers to specific questions, I don't think the debates will change anyone's minds. As far as the VP debate, why has the Debate Commission allowed the McCain camp to get their request to limit responses cut down to 2 minutes. Again, a format set up to favor the Republicans? Is the committee bipartisan? If so, rules should remain the same, not be changed.

The only thing people really get out of debates, is how Presidential the candidate is. Does he stay calm, does he stay on point, does he address the issues that are being discussed or ramble off on another subject, what's his body language saying.

chelle   September 30th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Yes indeed, Mr. McCain does favour the town hall format – although I'm not sure why. If I were in the audience and he kept saying "my friends" with that horrible little grin of his, I'd throw my popcorn at him!
He isn't the audience's friend for pete's sake. As for Sarah Palin's debate with Joe Biden....is it possible she is playing stupid and then is going to wallop Joe??? Or is she really that lacking in basic knowledge of government, economics, and foreign policy??? What exactly did John McCain and his staff ask her about during the vetting process?

Jane   September 30th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

McCain's communication style was condescending, rude with an outright my-way-or-the-highway attitude. I know who I want negotiating with other world leaders. McCain has no skills to help us towards diplomacy with other nations.

strong   September 30th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Debates have always struck me a staged, rehearsed skits. They come off as a badly acted highschool play. There needs to be questions asked from the audience, a spur-of-the-moment type of question, without any rehearsing by the candidates beforehand.

No wonder the debates don't change opinions. Debates are just showpieces for the politicians.

Deb, Allentown,PA   September 30th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Two things I have to point out.

First, Palin is again making cracks about Biden's age. Is she kidding, or is she truly as stupid as she seems? Picking on Biden, when he's 7 years younger than your Presidential candidate?

Secondly, McCain has released a new ad calling Obama a hypocrite. He cut off the first part of Obama's sentence to parse what he needed in order to make this claim. The McCain/Palin/GOP campaign is a lying, sleazy, distasteful farce.

Leah,Texas   September 30th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Obama looked presidential and gave intelligent answers regarding the future.
McCain acted like an angry old man that is out of touch and mainly talked about the past.

Obama won the debate by a landslide!

Bruce, Chicago   September 30th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

McCain favors a town-hall type format. The format is not set up to favor him. And yes, 48-45 is, I think, a 3 pt lead. Lehman's last CEO must have written this article. Or was it the Bear Stearns CEO??

Lisa   September 30th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

I did learn one thing, McCain's temper has not improved, he is still in a bad mood. He reminds me of my grandfather he always had a scowl on his face.

Lara   September 30th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

I think the American people are coming around to see the that McCain is not a staple person. He does things that don't make sense. If he wanted to put a woman as his running mate there are plenty of Republican woman that he could have picked who are 10 times better then Sarah. This is not a joke when someone pick their VP to run on the ticket with them, they need to make sure that they can take over in an emergency. She was not a good move for his campagin.

VK   September 30th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

John McCain is such a loveable little guy. He's obviously out of touch; not to mention he doesn't play fair. What would you expect from a guy who could stand next to his opponent for 97 minutes and not look him in the eyes like a real man, while he (McCain) was telling blatant lies to the people of our country.

I pray that the good citizens of the greatest country in the world are smarter than John Mccain things we are.

He needs to stop with the "Country First" bit. If he really cared as much for the country as he says, then he would stop lying to us.

Troy B.   September 30th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Did you guys hire George W. Bush to do your math or something? The man may have to use his fingers and toes, but he would probably come up with better math than the bozos that wrote this article.

milo   September 30th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

The point of the article seems to be that McCain did NOT gain any ground witht the first debate and I am not surprised. I think that the deabtes are basically shows, I remember in 2004, Kerry seemed to win all 3 debates and it was meaningless. At this point, September 30th, I thik the vast majority of people have made up their minds who they are going to vote for, unless something huge happens people are going to stick with their candidate

I thought she said she was a Pit bull, looks more like a chiwawa especially when she is allowing McCain to talk for her in interviews. But please don't under estimate her. For all you know she is playing a Jessica Simpson in the interviews and might just do fine on "D" day.

48-45 is obamanomics. also at least McCain has enough guts to try and help and fix this screwed up economy rather than Obama sitting back and doing crap. As for Palin why don't the jounalists dig into Biden family. oh i'm sorry it dorsn't work for the Obama idiots

Stacy from Cali   September 30th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

48-45? A 5 point lead? Could this be why we are in an economic crisis? Whose numeric sense is this?

Yes, but so did 133 Republicans.

Don't worry McCain.....Bush/Cheney Inc. will order a new 9/11 or Gulf of Tonkin-style "incident", blame it on Iran, and use fear to stampede people into voting for you as they used fear to control us after 9/11 and Paulson's $700 billion ransom letter to America.

October 7th is gonna be the final nail in the coffin .. for McCain's Campaign

Carl Justus   September 30th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

McCain is just too old to be elected president. He would be the oldest president ever elected if he wins. His mind is not as agile as it use to be.
I thought McCain would have made a good president in 2000 but that did not happen and I will not support a man for president that is 72 years old. I am 73 and I know what age does to the body and mind.

Kevin from MN   September 30th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

They say the next debate favors McCain because it is a town hall format.....and The Maverick prides himself on his ability to shine in that setting because he is the "Straight Talk Express"....we'll see. The big question now is whether McCain's team can pre-program enough answers in Palin's head for Thursday night's debate.

The Media is the Enemy   September 30th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

I can't believe there are that many stupid people. People who would select a hot headed underachiever and his VP/weather girl over brilliance and experience combined with brilliance. Those people are either solidly racist or unbelievably dense. 48-45? Are 45% OF THE PEOPLE REALLY DOING THAT WELL?

Troy B.   September 30th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Did you guys hire George Bush to do your math? The man would have to use his fingers and toes, but he would probably come out with better math than the bozos that wrote this article did.

Tristan, City of New York   September 30th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Anyone besides me wonder why the majority of the debates take place in Republican states? 1st debate in Mississippi, VP debate in Missouri, 2nd debate in Tennesse, and only the 3rd one is in New York. Why don't they have the debate in swing states, so that neither candidate has a home court advantage?

48-45 is a 3 point lead, well within the margin of error, or is this a typing error? Any way, NO Obama. McCain '12 Hillary Clinton 2012.

Glenn; Bakersville, NC.   September 30th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

I would have to disagree with the tagline of this post. It actually showed that Sen. McCain is a bitter old guard wardog republican who is condescending and sometimes confused. It also showed that although Sen. Obama is a younger, less experienced politician he demonstrated his ability to act as a Statesman. Sen Obama realizes that you cannot demonstrate diplomacy and be a world leader with a "Shoot first" mentality.

Charlie Johnson   September 30th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

"Obama holds a 5-point lead over McCain, 48-45 percent." C'mon, CNN, which is it? Can anybody there do simple arithmetic? Either it's a 5-point lead and the percentages are wrong, or the percentages are right and it's a 3-point lead. Meanwhile, your "poll of polls" feature says it's 47-43 Obama, a 4-point lead. I see this sloppy indifference all the time on your website and have started going elsewhere for information I can believe.

I believe more than ever young voters will come out in record numbers for Obama. All these polls are of "likely" voters, which means people over the age of 35. Unless something dramatic happens in the next few weeks Obama will easily win this election.

I think the VP debate is what will shake up the campaigns...I don't think Palin can hold her own against Biden...well, I think she can do the feisty thing but not the intelligent, well spoken, and on top of the issues at hand.

My big concern is that when Biden out-debates her, the McCain camp will say he was mean, a bully, condescending and/or a big old sexist. I worry that Biden really can't win for losing.

I think it's important to remember that many of the people running this blog and website, like Palin, have degrees in communications or journalism. This is most evident when you see math like 48 to 45 is a 5 point lead. Obviously someone called Palin and asked her to do the calculations for them.

TexicoFrom Mexico   September 30th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

The lead is actually 8 Points people 50-42! You need to wake up Repugs and realize your candidate spends 90% of his time talking about Obama! Palin spends 90% of the time talking about Obama..if fact those two could write a book about him long after Obama is in the White House. Ever notice how Obama spends 90% of his time talking about US!!! WE ARE THE IMPORTANTANT ONES!!! Obama is the one who coined the word 'Main Street", Obama is the one who coined the word "Change"......it was not McCain! In fact has your candidate come up with anything original yet? he follows Bush around like a puppy....he picks Palin NOT BECAUSE OF HER POLITICS but because he is trying to pander women and steal that vote. if Hillary was Obama's VP she would not even be on his ticket...... wake up copy cats..and come up with some original ideas and maybe stop being so negative and talking more about US might help him...not what Obama will do bad but what McCain can do good.....

TESAP;SAVANNAH, GA   September 30th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

But then again Mr and Mrs. Clause (Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi) will probably find a way to get you more stuff you can't afford.

Geoff Los Angeles   September 30th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

It's that darn fuzzy math again... stupid pollsters

My personal barometer is counting how many bumper stickers I see for each candidate on my commute every morning. As far as I can tell, Obama is up about 800%. And the few McCain supporters I do see usually have the sticker taped to the inside of the rear window. Now that's what I call commitment!

OS   September 30th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Why does the media feel that McCain has to do something to change the race – it is the verdict of the American People, so it be. There is nothing to change.

The person who is fit and qualified will win the race – Obama08

Matt   September 30th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Total BS. CNN cherry-picks the polls it uses to make the race look close. Every single other poll I've looked at...pollster, realclearpolitics, gallup, etc., shows a widening of the gap in Obama's favor, with a slight tightening of the gap show on gallup today. Whether it's because of the debate or McCain's total nonsense in regard to the bailout bill, who knows, but the trend is still Obama pulling ahead...go ahead and prove it to yourselves by doing some surfing.

Thursday is going to be delicious.

I've lost any respect I once held for Senator McCain. The man I voted for in the 2000 primary is long gone.

LIZ   September 30th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

McCain held his own in the debate–neither candidate answered specific questions with definite answers. Wall Street has rebounded some today–why do we need the so called bail out ...Obama has already made a mint off Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac

mfelder   September 30th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

I am a true Democrat. There is nothing John McCain or the Republicans can say or do to convince me to switch to the Republican Party. I don't agree with the Republican's philosopy or worldview. For me, there is not enough diversity in the Republican Party. While the democratic party is not perfect, they appear to be more welcoming of diverse groups.

CapoCastillo   September 30th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

two debates that seem to favor McCain in some form or another... A debate on Foreign policy, supposed to be McCain's strong suit. And now a Town Hall style debate, a format that McCain is more at ease with. When do the training wheels come off for the McCain campaign?

Benson   September 30th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Sarah Bell   September 30th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Seriously. Just the fact that you think a 48-45 is a five point lead shows how stupid some of the folks at CNN are becoming. No worries... It is soon that McCain camp will come up with a story that they either made up or totally exaggerated to divert the course from talking about serious issues and genuine disagreements to something nasty because they know that they stand zero chance to win otherwise. We are not that stupid. I am a registered Republican, voted two- term for Bush (Yes, I admit!) but ENOUGH already! Not this year. Interesting,

After Friday's debate, my Mom, Dad (both Republican) and two friends (both Independant) and In-laws (1 PUMA, and 1 Republican) all of whom said that it was clear to them that Obama is the only choice. McCain's anger, demenor, and NOT looking at Obama during the debate turned all but one of them off; my Father-in-law.

Loren   September 30th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

You say, "Obama holds a 5-point lead over McCain, 48-45 percent." Don't you guys check your math? 48 minus 45 equals *three*, not *five*.

Can you please review your numbers and let us know what the correct answer is?

Eugene Becker   September 30th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

"...Obama hold a 5 point lead, 48-45" over Mccain. Really?

Sarah Bell   September 30th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

The only way McCain could win is if Obama suddenly becomes an old, crazy white Republican.

MIr   September 30th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Since when is 48-45 "a 5 point lead"? Which of these figures is incorrect?!

proud army and navy mom   September 30th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

after listening to mccain's constant lies and unending stunts, who in their right mind will vote for the King of Drama? Idiots.

deroy   September 30th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

what do you expect? the media discovered that mccain was running as a hated republican.

they want OBAMA, the freshman senator with no experience.

it must be white guilt!

the country loses no matter what.
senators are NOT qualified to be president.
we will have a trainee in the white house jan, 20th.
the citizens lose. wolf blitzer chose the candidates.

David Goldman for OBAMA   September 30th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A GAME CHANGE IF THOSE

WHO ELECTED BUSH WERE NOT DEAD SET IN

DESTROYING WHAT IS LEFT OF OUR ECONOMY

& COUNTRY. MCSENILE IS AN ANGRY, IGNORANT

OUT OF HIS MIND OLD BIGOT, WHO DIDEN'T

HAVE THE DECENCY TO LOOK OBAMA IN THE EYE.

IS THAT THE BEHAVIOR OF AN INTELLIGENT,

HONORABLE, DECENT MAN ?

ANS: NO, HELL NO !!!

jeff   September 30th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Shut up Phil, it didn't change you, you already were voting for Obama, admit it.

Tony   September 30th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

All that debate did was to show that Obama had a good command of foreign policy and the other issues and that McCain is a bitter, angry, self-absorbed old man.

His constant references to what happend 20, 30, 40 years ago just reminded everyone how old he is. His refusing to look directly into the camera or at Obama when addressing him showed his arrogance, anger and that he is a man who flys off the handle on a moment's notice.

He lied repeatedly and Obama was a fool for not calling him on every single one rather than letting the moderator proceed.

John McCain used to be admired, considered a role model, and a man of morals and principles. Now he is seen for what he truly is, an angry, bitter, pathetic, old man with old ideas.

Very sad.

bob k   September 30th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

by by math 48-45 is a 3 point lead , not 5 points....I'm sure CNN's Obama cheerleading team WISHES it were 5 points...but at least use the correct math when reporting the "news"

cleduc   September 30th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

I've seen numerous polls and they tend to have drifted upwards for Obama. Now some of that may be because of McCain's gross funbling of the economy.

Anonymous   September 30th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

48-45 isn't a 5 point lead. So which is it?

Nurse Ratchet   September 30th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Next time John, you might wanna try the coherency approach and avoid the angry old man faces. You came off like a non-sequitor angry old grampa upset at the Bingo results.

jack   September 30th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

"Obama holds a 5 point lead 48-45 percent" With this kind of math, no wonder your country is in economic trouble.

Mack   September 30th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

48 to 45 is not a 5 point lead...CNN who rights this stuff, Barack Obama.

Chuck   September 30th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Did 95 Democrats derail bailout just to keep Obama ahead in polls?

CW in PSL   September 30th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

CNN you need to relook at your "poll or polls" if the election was called today Obama would win in a landslide!

Obama has had a lot of town halls....not sure why you all keep saying that style favors McCain...its not the style, its the substance, and based on that nothing is favoring McCain this election year!

Abby   September 30th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

No, they solidified Senator Obama’s lead so that’s a change. Obama 08 for Economic prosperity! And for PEACE!!!

jeff   September 30th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

48-45...yeah that sounds like a five point lead...the best political team on television? Maybe. The best math team on television? Not so much.

ACORN = obama = corrupt   September 30th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

No, but after this mess is sorted (this week hopefully) people will start looking into how utterly useless the Dems in congress really are. Nancy Pelosi is the biggest waste of space and after her stupid comments before the vote i actually wouldnt let her speak. This needs to be done in the nicest possible way so that the american people understand that washington is working for them. the house GOP say that this is how Nancy always addresses them and she knows nothing about bi-partisanship

alvino   September 30th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Look for McCain to go back to what he does best, step up his lies and attacks on Obama, making even more ridiculus claims. That is the only thing he has going for him at this point. However, one thing that could change the dynamics of the race is that he ask Sarah to step down (angering Evangelicals) and choose the Mitt wit to take her place.

Nancy   September 30th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Good...I hope Mcwhatever continues to fall. He's not worthy.

Bob Texas   September 30th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Mr. McCain seemed bitter and angry during the debate. War with Russia, War with Iran, keep fighting in Iraq. The USA needs a president not a warrior!

Ken   September 30th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Since this debate had a low viewer rating, it tells me that people are not interested in what Obama has to say. You can beat down and degrade John McCain all you want, but at the end of the election, John McCain will be POTUS. Wait and see that this election is by the voters, not the liberal Obama-butt kissing MSM.

GS   September 30th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Free Sarah!

Chuck   September 30th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

The current polls should make CNN and MSNBC very happy. Oh yes, and those who want free pizza every day, every Friday off with pay, and a consistent 8% return on your investment every year.

Abby M   September 30th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

No offense, I'm a Barack supporter but your figures don't add up. If it's 48-45, its +3 for Senator Obama, not +5. If it really is +5, then it would be 48-43.

You might want to correct that.

Maggie from Virginia   September 30th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Get ready for McCain to pull one of his stunts. Wait for it ....

ACORN = obama = corrupt   September 30th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Molly Weasley   September 30th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Many of the polls show undecideds shifting to Obama. I think your reporting needs to be a little more thorough.

MF   September 30th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

You mean the base wasn't energized? or re-energized or polarized.
How about paralyzed? stigmatized? C'mon we need base stories. base, base, base.

Michael   September 30th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

How is 48-45 a 5-point lead?

Mike in Columbus   September 30th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Anyone else notice that McCain didn't even have the guts to look Obama in the eye? He knows he has sacraficed all of his honor and integrity in a pathetic attempt to become president. Its been very sad to watch.

Shane   September 30th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

It's the beginning of the end for McCain/Palin.

This debate was supposed to be McCain's strength. It wasn't! He looked like a tired, old man.

Palin doesn't know any Supreme Court cases other than Roe v. Wade.

She thinks dinosaurs were on earth thousands, not millions of years ago.

She said thanks for the money to the bridge to nowhere.

Looking forward to seeing her debate on Thursday!

observer   September 30th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

48-45 % is a 3 point lead you morons

Tim B   September 30th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

"Obama holds a 5-point lead over McCain, 48-45 percent." ... I want to subscribe to this mathematical journal.

JD in NC   September 30th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

It's not the debate that changed things, it was McCain unpredictable behavior. Throughout all of this Obama has been calm and responsible, and that's what we saw Friday night.

Kay Mason   September 30th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Excuse me-how is 48 to 45 a five point lead? Your polls have also been out of line with more recent ones suggesting Obama's lead is growing.
Who gathered these results? John King, the McPain man, probably.

Jeff   September 30th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Related topic...the photo caption for the CNN Political Ticker posting showing Senator Obama talking to President Bush could be...

"Mr. President I got a call from Sarah Palin saying something about wanting to use her lifeline. Do you know how I can reach her?"

"Well Senator my understanding is she is at debate camp studying and is not to be disturbed by anyone...especially by journalists."

Mark   September 30th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Umm, 48-45 is a 5 point lead?

Dutch-VA   September 30th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

The debate in my opinion was won by Sen. Obama. The polls may not show a boost because he right people aren't being polled. Everyone I've spoken to thinks Obama won and thought McLame was childish because he couldn't even look Sen. Obama in the face.

TAMMY   September 30th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

48-45=3

Judith Goldsmith   September 30th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

It's pretty obvious that Bill Clinton would like Obama to lose so that Hillary could run in 4 years.

The Clintons are not known for their ability to play fair

PD Thomas   September 30th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

He needs to be at 52% for it to really matter...i wonder...do they make enough calls to hold the number or if they made more would be get to 52%?

Can we get a breakdown of how these polls work so we can know if there is merit??

Fritz   September 30th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

"Obama holds a 5-point lead over McCain, 48-45 percent."
Those numbers don't look right.

Liz T, Tucson   September 30th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

To date, everything McCain has done to "shake up the race", has been cynical, deceptive and grand-standing. I am afraid that he will do something really crazy.

The man is simply not stable. He is cornered and desperate.

I said Thanks, but No Thanks to another 4 years of g.o.p. corruption, arrogance and incompetence   September 30th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

McCain: "Me First"

Baze   September 30th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

The failure of his Mighty Mouse routine is the nail in the coffin for this campaign. He flew in to save washington, and instead created more chaos.

New math, right?

Sarah So NJ   September 30th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Palin's fist has been drawing my attention

causing me to wonder

probably represents insecurity

Mccain is a liar   September 30th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Mccain is an idiot, a liar, and it's going to be downright scary if he somehow wins with sarah palin, the model reporter and then mayor of a town that has less people than probably my college campus...

help us all   September 30th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

well go figure.

AJ   September 30th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

48-45 is not a 5 point lead

ohio   September 30th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Obama knocked mccain out no questions asked. Everything Mccain voted on war was wrong and everything mccain voted on economy was wrong mccain is wrong all his life

Phil, Ashburn, VA   September 30th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

It changed me. Showed me the real McCain. Arrogant, disrespectful, angry, irritated and old.

Rob Crawford   September 30th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

How is 48-45 a 5-pt lead? Palinomics?

Margerie, OH   September 30th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Good, all is right with the world. Now if Sarah would just keep talking the poll will be even higher in Barack's favor.

Thanks for picking her McCain, what a gift that keeps on giving.

Obama/Biden 08

Donna   September 30th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

I don't see how anyone could really "win" a debate..they aren't scoring any points since the answers are matters of personal knowledge and debate...

People pretty much know who they are going to vote for by now and for those that don't, these debates should be a chance for the candidate to speak to them directly..whether or not they answer your questions is a personal opinion....

Kate   September 30th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

The VP debate on Thursday will seal the deal. No way Palin can hold her own against Biden.

PK   September 30th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

why is the format set up to favor McCain?
