The problem is with teh financial institutions that hold the now valueless mortgage backed securities. Raising the depositor insurance levels won't fix this problem, it doesn't even address teh problem. Are any of you Obamaniacs even listening ot what's going on?

Obama's idea is a step in the right direction expanding the amount banks will insure would help a great deal.

Once again Obama has had remained calm in the face of a crisis and out forth solid ideas to help alleviate our nations economic crisis.

Once again John McCain has done nothing but finger point, jump from one side to the other, depending on what position is popular at that moment and act like an utter fool.

The more I see John McCain the more I like Barak Obama.

Raising the limit to $250 is a stretch across the aisle to the Repubs to get those 12 extra votes. You're right, most "average" people don't have to worry about saving over $100K, but the repub's constituents often do. That's called leadership.

I think it's a decent comprimise. You get more people willing to "invest" in banks (through saving), which would strengthen thier lending power, which would free up more money for small businesses, home-car-student loans, etc.

Not a bad idea in my novice finacial opinion. I think it's better than recinding the bancruptcy provision for individuals, which may open the panic floodgates right now in these tense times. Save that battle for healthier times.

Obama is the only one of them all that is making sense at this point. He seems to be the only person looking out for us regular people, that's for sure.

This deal would have been done and 1.2 trillion dollars would have been saved if McCain didn't ride into Washington and screw it all up. I swear he remids me more and more of Bush every day.

To the misinformed...one of the reasons for raising the limits on deposit insurance is to protect small businesses! As a married couple, John and Jane Doe may not have $250,000 in the bank. But as owners of a small business, they could very well have that. And then how about talking to the ordinary citizens who had more than $100,000 in Indy Mack. As what they think about the raising the insured deposits! Obama-Biden!!!

FDIC insurance is not paid for out of taxes. Banks pay it as a small percentage of the deposits they hold. That's why their rates are sometimes lower than non-FDIC-insured holdings. So, no tax increase here, maybe just a slightly lower rate of interest on your savings. But I guess the facts don't really make for good political fodder, so it is easier to just cry foul from the abyss of ignorance.

Increasing FDIC insurance was proposed by several financial analysts yesterday on TV prior to Obama. I saw it personally. This wasn't Obama's idea although he is presenting it as such. Obama is a follower, not a leader.

Sweetie -
You are delusional. OBAMA will win by a landslide.

See you in January Mr. President.

By the way, Obama plans on raising taxes on 5% of Americans, how is he going to do this.... take the cap off of FICA which is currently at around 96,500. Those making more thn this will pay taxes on their entire salary, Gee what a smart idea!

Obama change you can believe in.

Jim Cramer on his Mad Money show presented the idea of raising the FDIC deposit limit from its current $100,000 to something higher on Friday, September 26, prior to either Obama or McCain announcing the same thing. This would allow the "somewhat" wealthy to feel comfortable leaving their deposits in their banks and the banks could use these deposits to lend money. While this doesn't fix all of the bad loans already in existence, it would allow credit to flow and the average person would benefit. I thought at the time this was a great idea and I'm happy both Obama and McCain are giving it publicity!

The only thing McCain has left is to rip Obama... His political ideology certainly isn't going to get him into the White House...

For those of you who still don't get it.. the bailout isn't what any politician wanted to have to deal with but the reality is that the market is crashing and something surely needs to be done before this country goes into a depression... I do agree however that the 21/2 oage plan from President Bush was feable but the bipartisan congress worked long and hard and made major changes to it... Now with Obama's proposal the people on Main street will get more help...

The bailout even without his proposal would have a trickle down effect anyway so it would have helped the people on main street as well however adding this additional provision would inject more help for the home market!!!

We need this bailout. We're all angry at the fact that it got so out of control that now the government must act but we are where we are and we have to take it from here!

HA HA HA so he wants to raise FDIC to cover up to his definition of rich $250K. This is NOT LEADERSHIP. This throwing out a dumb idead that helps almost no one. If you have more that $100,000 in a checking or saving account than either you are very rich, or you've put all your eggs in one basket and need to spread the money across different banks so that no account is more than the limit. That is just good management regardless of what the limit is.

Don't be duped here to think this will help the economy. This is a lame attempt to show that he is coming up with something different than the expensive spending plan he has been pandering since he couldn't during the debates.

Hey Barack, does the term HUGH GOVERNMENT, sound like SOCIALISUM, thats your plan? Fact, founding fathers wanted Americans tobe FREE, not free ride. You talk alot and really just say I am a great self promoter, but not a true leader. My opinion is we split the pie i.e., a Repuk, President and a Demo Congress and either they work together on the art of Compromise, or We the People vote their sorry butts out of office period end of story.

Obama is smart and shadows of McCain in all subjects and aspects and has the confidence to agree with McCain when McCain says something true and right. This news station and others should be admonished for how you are always shouting what you want to publicize as faults of Obama but propergate McCain and nothing about all the wrong he has committed. CNN is the worst next to Fox.

I believe it is the Democrats who are playing politics with this issue. Pelosi knew her speech would have a negative effect. Obama and his campaign insisted that McCain stay out of Washington (Obama didn't think of going to Washington first). Obama, McCain, and Biden need to do their day job, go back to Washington and find a way to solve the problem.

This is a good idea if the babies in Washington can stop fighting and pointing fingers at each other. Everybody knows that whoever is in charge is responsible for what is going on at the time. The GOP don't want to take the blame, but it is clear that Bush has been president for the last eight years and during those last eight years, America's economy has gone from bad to worst. The rich has gotten richer and the rest of us has gotten screwed; without any lubrication!

END THE DRAMA, VOTE OBAMA!

First good idea I have heard coming from Obama. they need to raise it to $250,000 been $100,000 for years. Only thing that bothers me is Fannie Mae & Freddie mac is a big part of the problem and Obama was the 2nd largest receipent of funds from the lobbist of both these agency's. Sounds like they need to invesigate to see if he helped get us in this mess.

This shows that Obama is at least searching for some answer to save the country from going into recession/depression.....There is no easy solution that is perfect, however, something has to be done to at least try and correct a horrible situation in America. I would rather see the greedy Wall Street and Washington mis-representatives have to go it alone but that will not come close to helping Main Street.

The McCain/Palin ticket is frightening. Let's be real, what if Palin had to take over as President? CRISIS or possibly worse.

Even if you personally do not have 250K in the bank, this will be a major help to small business owners. It will give them increased confidence in their savings/business, leading them to at the least maintain their business at the current level and hopefully growing.

At the same time they will not feel the need to cut the jobs because of their uncertain savings.

To people who don't know how raising the FDIC limit from $100,000 to $250,000 would help them. It helps small business since not many individual have $250,000 in the bank. Small business is the heart of main street. It is a great idea from our next president. Now McCain is jumping on Barak's bandwagon. McCain does not have any original ideas, he steals from Obama. What a loser.

Thank you President Obama......we need someone right now who is cool and calm and not creating uneeded anxiety. Watch McCain handle this makes people want to pull all their money out their accounts and hide it under their mattress. McCain is a HORRIBLE leader while Obama is doing exactly what a President should be doing, stay calm and get things done.

I live 10 miles from a latte' and I can't haul my animals' hay or feed in a Prius, but I can still sense when NEITHER of these candidates has the real pulse of the economic situation. A large holder of bundled mortgages either failing or writing DOWN the value of their investment would be good discipline, not financial catastrophe.

And YES, a large holder might be YOUR 401K or your employer's pension fund. Why not ask the manager/s or your union leaders why they felt they had to "juice" up yields on portfolios by putting YOUR money in this stuff. Sorry, YOU gave them that discretion. Take it back, but don't reach into my pocket...its no fuller than yours.

Obama at his best - let's give more away. Where do you guys think all his giveaways is coming from? We don't deserve anything to be handed to us on his silver platter. We need to get over this "gimme" attitude and start anew. Americans are not special. Our government (which, seems many of you have forgotten - is me and you) does not owe us. We need to grow up and get over ourselves. Obama thinks he can promise the moon and the stars, and dreams are fantastic, but let's be real here. That's what grown-ups do, face reality. It ain't gonna happen! If you overextended yourself that's too bad. If we will live in dire conditions for a while that's ok. We will get through it.

Individual accounts are already insured to $100, 000. If you have more than $100, 000 just put it in different account. This is an example of more words that mean absolutely nothing. No more bs.. please

This is funny, I believe I heard the Dem's nemosis Karl Rove explaine doing this last night but not so loosley as Senator Obama has. This is off subject but has been pointed out quite a few times. Why is it that Senator Obama has none of the common respect that Senator McCain does? When listening to these candidates please pay attention to the fact that Senator Obama does not even address Senator McCain as a senator, yet Senator McCain always has the respect to address Senator Obama as senator? I find this arrogant and lack of respect for position. Wether you agree with someone or not they have earned the right to be addressed correctly.

This does help you even if you don't $250k in the bank. If you've got $1000 in the bank and let's face it, you nor I are the ones keeping the doors open--the raised limit helps calm the nerves of those who do keep it open, those that have a lot of money. If they don't make a run on the bank in the midst of this panick then the bank stands a much better chance of not failing.

It's about time we have a candidate with such innovate ideas that it make the opposition party jump on the bandwagon and agree like it was their idea in the first place. Now if we can only get the rest of Washington to go along.....Obama is the candidate we need in November

That is funny I heard my republican congressman Steve Latourette propose the very same thing last night on a local radio station. Maybe Obama didn't come up with the idea. Sounds like he stole it from republicans in the house.

What needs to happen is an education on the funding limitation inside of FDIC. Most people do not understand how much of their money is protected. Trust me I work for a financial institution and we are constantly educating our members. Read your FDIC insured funds brochures. Take this grave opportunity to educate yourself so that you can be more informed.
