The Obama campaign released a new ad calling McCain a 'big spender'.

(CNN) –- As the Senate prepared for an expected Wednesday evening vote on the financial bailout package, Barack Obama’s campaign released a new ad Wednesday that portrayed John McCain as a “big spender” who would add $3 trillion to the national debt.

Citing statistics from TaxPolicyCenter.org, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, and the McCain campaign Web site, “Spending Spree” charges that McCain’s tax and spending proposals would drive up America’s debt by trillions of dollars.

Watch: The Obama campaign's latest ad calls McCain a 'big spender'

“So as we borrow from China to fund his spending spree, ask yourself. Can we afford John McCain?” a narrator asks in the ad, which start running in “key states” Wednesday, according to the Obama campaign.

The ad comes one day after the Republican National Committee’s independent expenditure unit released a new spot, set to run in battleground states, that looks to tie Obama to the bailout plan before Congress, and holds him responsible for the $1 trillion in new spending that may result.

"Who pays? You do. New taxes. New spending. New debt. Barack Obama’s plan: It will make the problem worse," says the announcer in the 30-second spot.

Republicans in power for 8 years. In that 8 years we've compiled the highest deficit in US history, and our financial markets are about to melt down. And the Republicans say we should give them more money so they can fix things. And Obama is lying?!?! Yeah. Right.

annoyed   October 1st, 2008 3:58 pm ET

heres a question for you, when have any of them not ran up a debt for us the common tax payer to foot the bill? Its always more, more, more, when will someone look back and realize that clinton had they idea inprove on what works and cut what don't. fix and work with whats available without running those of us who don't have thousands lying around, and never have, to lose because these people what more money to fund their private interest.

MCCAIN/PALIN IS A "TICKET TO NO WHERE"!!!!!! MCCAIN WILL RUIN THIS COUNTRY PEOPLE!!!!

Steve   October 1st, 2008 3:57 pm ET

The Republicans have been in power for 8 years. The Democrats have had a very slight majority in Congress for 2. Democratic attempts to rein in spending have been stopped by their counterparts both in Congress and in the White House. We now have the largest budget deficit in US history, which started from a budget surplus in 2000. And McCain is telling us he and his party know how to run finances??? I'm actually chuckling and shaking my head. You're kidding, right?

Pat - Overland Park, KS   October 1st, 2008 3:56 pm ET

If you check Factcheck.org you will find that 95% of Senator McCain's ads are on there, even the ones where he talks strictly about himself and Govenor Palin. They even have things that were said at the Republican Convention that were way off base and untrue plus putting down the fact that Senator Obama was a community organizer.

However, Senator McCain's ads are way out of line and very much untruthful.

The fact is we have been lied to for eight years now and McCain follows Bush's lead 90% of the time. Do you really want more of McSame and heaven forbid Palin?

tennisguypitt   October 1st, 2008 3:56 pm ET

He's right, but there's more to it. If you go on factcheck.org, you will find out his plan will also increase the debt and there will be a deficit. But it doesn't include wasteful spending under the Bush administration.

He's not lying, people.

Has anyone else notice that McCain has this awful twitch, when he constantly turns his wedding band? I hope it's a sign that he won't get his ultimate goal, the presidency.

Just as his wife and kids waited for their father to return, and were denied an intact family. McCain should wait for his life long dream, only to be DENIED. His wife and kids were ditched and denied. Now it's time to ditch him. Now it's time to DENY him.

Wake up he will take- do anything to get into the White House. I say just put him in there now before he destroys more of America. Put him in there now so we can get him the hell out of there.

People, please think for a moment: do you seriously would like 4 more yrs of failed policies? Republicans have privatized gains and socialized debt. Oversight never took place in Wall Street under Bush's watch. Now YOU are picking up the tab. McCain will strip you clean of your 401 and savings well before the end of his first presidential term (and this is a promise) if you make the HUDGE mistake to elect him. Your choice, your future (and your kid's!!). You will be choosing your own destinity on November 2008.... MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE.

History shows that every time a "smaller government" Republican takes power, the size of the government mushrooms. It happened under Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, and both Bushes. It's not a philosophy, it's a marketing technique.

When are people who believe in smaller government going to stop believing this lie?

It is amazing how the republican using the name of Never Obama can attempt to call Obama a liar. No candidate can beat McCain at telling lies. After seeing how disrespectful McCain was in that debate on Friday night, I don't see how any true honest person can support him.

The Repubs always claim the Dems are the big spenders. BS. Ronald Reagan promised to cut federal spending when he first ran. After he got elected, he increased the budget 10% the first year. He doubled the national debt in only 4 years. He left office with a $350B deficit. It was $42B when he took office. George W. Bush has pushed the national debt to around $12 trillion. The deficit is over $400B. Both are all time records. And in case some of you right-wingers have forgotten, it's the WHITE HOUSE that writes the budget, not Congress.

McCain will vote to approve it, after his Repub house base insisted on perks before they will drop their opposition. McCain doesn't know how to lead his party (getting them to accept it without additional expendures) and they apparently don't listen to his campaign rhetoric (no earmarks). Perfect!

I heart Obama!! He's the type of nominee I want for president of my country a person that brings calm to americans, no a person that blames everyone else, or that make us panic. He's not full of anger like McCain and besides Obama there' s a person with a lot of experience on foreign policies which is very important!.. Palin scares me, as a women I have to admit I respect her but she can't be a VP who is steps away to become a president,. the fact that she doesn't have much knowledge of foreign policy and that she's totally unaware of whats going on in our nation SCARES ME!! I just hope for all those ppl not to vote for Palin just becuase shes LIKE YOU!! remember we are talking about the PRESIDENCY NOT A PTA ORGANIZATION!! OPEN YOUR EYES AND CHOOSE WISELY!

Obama is so lame. He'll do and say anything to win. He constantly runs down McCain because he, himself has no record to run on. He's a JUNIOR SENATOR with zero accomplishment. Need anyone say more?

You morons that think he's God are scary. This man is a slick car salesman, nothing else. He's done nothing to prove he can solve our problems after George W Bush's terms. No time for rookies.

It good that Obama is turning the table on McCain.
The GOP did the same think to Clinton when he ran in 1992. Calling him a tax and spend liberal. Then in Clintons 2 months into his second term the GOP claimed Clinton high jacked t there agenda, because, Clinton balance the budget. The GOP does noting but lie, and do the exact opposite once elected.

Mike Dallas   October 1st, 2008 3:07 pm ET

Keep hitting 'em Obama!

Supporters do not get too comfortable with poll numbers, let us all keep sending our regular contributions in for this last month!

Brennan, Seattle WA   October 1st, 2008 3:06 pm ET

That is funny. The RNC tries to tie Obama to the bailout at the same time that John McCain tries to tie himself to the bailout. The RNC and the McCain campaign are absolutely lost on the economy.

John McCain's hopes for the presidency are fading faster than Sarah Palin. You gotta give it to the republicans though....they are throwing just about everything that anyone can think of at Obama/Biden and the Dems. Unfortunately we have seen it all before and since GWB destroyed America's trust in his party nobody believes what they are spewing. This will get worse. McCain is getting more and more desperate by the day and he will try anything. I am thinking that they will role out a nationwide Rev Wright/muslim(Fear, fear and more fear) spot about a week before the election to try to scare voters into going their way.

Cammi317   October 1st, 2008 3:06 pm ET

LOL....I almost feel sorry for John McCain. His campaign is toast!

Cam   October 1st, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Anyone who supports Palin should answer this question:

Do you yourself feel like you have the knowledge and ability to run the most complex economy in the world?

If your answer about yourself personally is NO, then your answer to Palin should be NO as well. Americans need the best and the brightest, not the one who looks and sounds like me, no matter how little they know.

Everyone hates what Bush has done yet seems willing to accept Palin based on the exact same "endearing principles".

James from Canada   October 1st, 2008 3:05 pm ET

no surprise here, the republican party has lost there way. They are not the party of the early 80's. Look at Bush he has racked up 4.5 trillion on to your national debt. The new republicans are about big government.

Tony   October 1st, 2008 3:05 pm ET

McCain is such a whiner and loser.

He voted for the same bailout plan that he is accusing Obama of voting for.

McCain used to be a man of character, an honorable man, and a role model. Now he is nothing but an angry, bitter, whiny, self-absorbed old man with ideas.

Bjoerlingfan   October 1st, 2008 3:04 pm ET

I'm just glad the Obama camp is citing sources for their stats. It makes it a lot harder for the McCain camp and the RNC to deny the claims.

Independent Fred   October 1st, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Has Palin released her reported income to the media like Biden has?

Obama is keeping McCain on his toes. We all know this mess of the Finacial Instituions in this country can be blamed on McCain and his partner Phil Grahm...deregulators.

Rick Davis should be fired as McCains campaign advisor, he is a criminal. I hope after the bailout, and Obama is in office in January the federal gov't will prosecute the lobbyist and the crooked administration we have in office today.

Frank   October 1st, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Obama's new ad is a useful reminder of some basic facts:

1. The Democrats gave us our only balanced budgets since WW2.

2. SInce WW2, economic growth has been higher under Democrats than under Republicans.

3. Since WW2, income inequality has been lower under Democrats than under Republicans.

Unless you are in the top 1% of the income distribution, you have to be a knuckle-dragging moron to vote Republican.

Don't vote for McDumb   October 1st, 2008 3:04 pm ET

When has republicans been fiscally responsible. Their whole trickle down thoery is flawed. How can you continue to spend what you don't have.

If the money is not there then for god sakes you can't spend it. Our country has been dealing with this type of economics since Ronald reagan introduced it.

The only reason why republicans like it because the majority of them are rich. And for those who are not are dumb! I hope you lose your job if McDumb is elected and the rich will keep on getting richer.

LB   October 1st, 2008 3:03 pm ET

With McCain's plan on health insurance my employer will no longer pay for my health insurance. McCain wants to help the corporations by saving them this expense and the employees to purchase their own health insurance out of their own pocketbook. Great, so not only would I not be getting the cost of insurance free, but I would then have to budget to pay for health insurance out of each paycheck. And do you think your employer will increase your paycheck and since they no longer havie that expense? Mine won't be giving me any raise. That money will stay in his pocket while my pocket will be short even more because I'll be paying for health care out of that pocket.
John McCain's thinks "Your on your own" when it comes to College Tuitions. Obama wants to give student/parents a $4000 tax break towards college tuition. My pocketbook says vote Obama.

John McCain is a Bushie Republican... spend now, spend later, tax cuts for the top 1% now and tax cuts for top 1% later, 10-15 Billion a month to Iraq now, 10-15 Billion a month to Iraq later..
John McCain = George Bush.... a real spender.

Arkansas Undertaker   October 1st, 2008 3:01 pm ET

John McCain will stoop as low as he has to to get what he wants.
I am for Obama but realize he has a long way to go thanks to Mr Sleezeballs lies. McCain, the war hero, has become nothing but a
slimy bottom feeder. I wonder if it is worth it to totally loose your integrity and honor. Only John can give us the answers to that question.

Tony   October 1st, 2008 3:00 pm ET

This isn't news.

McCain has always been a big spender.

Guess when you are married to a Stepford wife worth over $100 million dollars spending is no big deal.

Things must be tough for the Millionare McCain's though as I read this morning that they put their 13-bedrrom, 14-bathroom mansion up for sale.

- Less Corporate taxes
- Less taxes for the wealthy
- Borrow from China

- Borrow from our children's future by making them pay

Anyone else think this is wrong?

TAYO, NY   October 1st, 2008 2:58 pm ET

Well, that is tit for tat!

McCain has no solution to our problem and I have been saying this all along.

Period!

ines   October 1st, 2008 2:58 pm ET

McCain offers America no real change. His policies are a continuation of what got us into all of these crises. America would wither up and crumble under a McCain administration.

Ron Ft. Myers   October 1st, 2008 2:57 pm ET

I agree with Rich. So how about the money that was filtered to Illinois via Obama, something like $900 million. How about Acorn that wants $500 million, the company that reportedly uses Obama to train Acorn's employees how to twist the arm of lending institutions into making risky loans to people not really qualified, like the ones we are going to be buying in the bail out.

DJ Los Angeles   October 1st, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Yes because McCain double-downs on the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and wants to continue to waste 10 Billion $ in Iraq each month indefinitely.

Wolfowitz, Bush and McCain's sheisty lobbyist Scheunemann all are a pack of warmongers and will continue to run-up record budget deficits and ties to corrupt lobbyists.

Alice Brinkley   October 1st, 2008 2:57 pm ET

This is just wrong. It has been Obama who has voted for every spending bill since he has been in DC, except the one to support our troops in Iraq. And, Obama's budget: spend, spend, spend. Are there Americans out there foolish enough to believe only the rich will pay for that? Not only for in-America programs, but for programs world-wide to take care of blacks all over the world at a much-increased rate (read his proposed bill and see for yourself). Obama has already started his campaign to be the ruler of the entire world.

Shari, NY   October 1st, 2008 2:56 pm ET

To the few pollsters who have the tendency to paint Obama supporters with a "welfare" brush: Wake up! I know many who have homes with NO mortgage pending. The choice for Obama hinges on several issues which include kicking ineptitude to the curb.

Noah   October 1st, 2008 2:56 pm ET

His ad makes no sense. McCain is going to cut taxes for everyone, including people who make more than $250,000. That would include alot of small business owners who are hardly wealthy. Obama's tax cut is not even a tax cut. It is a tax rebate. It would give back money to people who make less than $250,000. The problem is that it will even give money back to people who did not pay taxes. He is trying to buy votes. Liberals=Suckers

hjon   October 1st, 2008 2:55 pm ET

I can't believe McCain would tie Obama to the bailout plan when McCain supports it too. Another manipulation by Mccain to try to fool americans to vote for him.

Eric, Newtown, PA   October 1st, 2008 2:55 pm ET

The Republicans will squeal, but this advertisement relies on data from non-partisan organizations. Bush squandered the budget surplus left by Bill Clinton and McCain promises only more of the same Bush policies that brought us to the crisis we're in now.

Janine   October 1st, 2008 2:54 pm ET

It's true. His proposal cost more than Obama's. And when are we going to bring our troops back to Iraq so we don't have to spend 11 billion dollars a month? Let Iraq spend their own money.

Dave in NYC   October 1st, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Well done! The GOP always tries to paint Democrats as big spenders, but if you look at the facts: Spending and debt have increased dramatically more under every Republican president since Reagan.

Republicans talk the talk, but they don't walk the walk!

Kenny Human   October 1st, 2008 2:54 pm ET

call me crazy, but if my memory serves me correctly McCain suspended his campaign and attempted (unsuccesfully) to claim credit for the bailout...now all of a sudden it was all Obama's idea? Please.

Love My USA/Do You?   October 1st, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Republicans why bother to vote. This election has been bought by BO through the biase Media, Acorn and the corrupted Democrateic politicans. The American taxpayer will regret the day they pulled BO lever. Socialism is on its way.

Joe   October 1st, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Exactly!

What's the differnce between Obama spending $100 billion on health care reform and McCain creating $300 billion worth of tax loopholes for corporations?

Nothing! Except I can use the healthcare. My deductibles are through the friggin roof!

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   October 1st, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Sen. Obama is certainly not the "softee" that everyone has expected him to be (although he could've taken a little bit more aggressive tone last Thursday). Rather, it seems that he knows exactly how to play rough and tumble if necessary. And in this case with Sen. McCain, it seems necessary as McCain has totally dumped his pledge (and his wife) of not going negative.

This is yet another cerebral way to wage his gameplan against McCain. Kudos to Axlerod, Gibbs, et al.

Brian Rich   October 1st, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Obama is a big spender on all of these lame ads~~~~!!!! And some Americans are not educated enought to realize this.
We will need lots of help and hope if Obama is in office.

j   October 1st, 2008 2:47 pm ET

McCain has voted with Bush over 90% of the time. Bush has increased the national debt by trillions of dollars, increased the size of government, and spent like a "drunken sailor". Republicans have controlled Congress for most of the time Bush has been in the White House so any claim Republicans had to being fiscal conservatives is blown. They don't live up to their rhetoric. They're hypocrits.

Statistically Democrats make better presidents for the economy. With the economy in such sad shape, America can not afford a Republican president that has supported the disastrous policies that got us into this mess in the first place.

That's why I'm NOT voting for McCain-Palin.

Paul   October 1st, 2008 2:46 pm ET

That is absolutely a non starter. No one is stupid enough to believe that McCain will spend nearly as much as Obama. The comparisons are stark and so are the records.

Nimi from NY   October 1st, 2008 2:46 pm ET

The Republicans and McCain camp will like to blame Obama and the Democrats for everything ill thing that has happened on earth. What they keep forgetting is the fact that history has it that the Republicans have been big spenders. They spend, and spend and spend while the Democrats clean up their mess. I am glad we have people checking into these facts. So, the Republicans can run all the ads they want, thank God Obama can match up with them in spending money of his own to counteract such ads.

Tired of W, OH   October 1st, 2008 2:46 pm ET

So, is the RNC now against McCain????

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't McCain support the bailout too? The people are not stupid, RNC!

Debby   October 1st, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Hey Obama do you figure more taxes if there is more spending. DUH Your plan has less spending but has us paying for it with taxing us to death. I still want to know how 5% can pay for 95% of Americans when Obama answers that question maybe I will change my vote.

Ya know the TIcker likes to Tick me off...

I am gonna try and repost to some extent what I did before!!

the REPUBLICANS wont vote unless there are sweetners attached to this bill

One is the FDIC up to $250,000 (which protects the more wealthy

Alternative Minimum Tax Relief... (which will mostly protect businesses and people making over $150,000 a year if I am correct)

Other Tax exemptions (mostly upper middle clas to rich)

New Energy Exemptions (which you have to buy new energy stuff to get it, who has the money for that today??)

And last but not least, and probably the best thing on the bill... Mental health should be viewed and covered as Physical health.

I am voting Dems across the ticket come November!! Get the Rich theives out of office!! McCain and his $500 shoes!!
